Scheck Hillel’s core curriculum exposes students to languagerich environments, focusing on direct reading instruction as well as nurturing a love of reading. Exposure to reading at home – as an extension of reading in school – is paramount to long-term vocabulary and cognitive development. As a foundation for all learning, the benefits of reading traverse academic areas. And reading also develops soft skills such as empathy, solidarity and core values such as chesed, kavod and emet.

GRADE 2 GOES TO THE POLLS Reading Curriculum Aligns With Current Events

Did you know that a full-blown campaign for Governor took place on the Scheck Hillel campus this fall?

As American adults went to the polls on November 6, Grade 2 students chose a “governor” from among their teachers, who took on roles of characters from their SuperKids reading program. These young voters were immersed in the language of civics for several weeks ahead of the election, brainstorming about traits of leaders, listening to platforms in a rally and creating campaign posters based on their candidate’s positions.

The teachers wrote, “We tallied the votes and announced the winner. The governor-elect gave an acceptance speech and congratulated each of the remaining candidates to show gratitude and respect for the process.”

Such project based learning makes the curriculum relevant and timely. The team of teachers applied content from reading, social studies and writing and modeled middot and lessons about civic duty and engagement. Kol Hakavod to Governor Doc and to the entire class!

Who are you?

Who do you want to be?

These questions are fundamental to Scheck Hillel’s educational mission and are woven into the curriculum in a variety of ways. In the art studio, Lower School art teacher Rosa Benatia uses the self-portrait to promote awareness of the physical self. Her Grade 1 students look into mirrors to outline their general features on paper; then, without the aid of the mirror, they add details to the portrait based on a faceto-face conversation with a partner. Similarities and differences come to light as the portraits develop and as children get to know themselves through others.

Being a teenager who is beginning to think independently and question things, I found relief and comfort in getting explanations from Rabbi Shlomo Sprung to topics that I found hard to grasp.

Shaping identity is a gradual process that evolves over time. In the Capstone Seminar, Grade 12 students revisit identity through the lenses of secular literature, Judaic texts and Israel advocacy, among others. Senior Jayme Podgorowiez relates how Rabbi Elie Ganz challenges them to understand other traditions as they solidify their own: “These classes prepare us with tools to have conversations about our faith and identity once we get to college.” In the English Capstone class, teacher and English Department Chair Andrew Butler assigns students to read The Kite Runner, followed by a self-help book of their choice. “Students express so much honesty as they look inward at their strengths and weaknesses. I am so proud of their ability to do this,” Mr. Butler said. The mask and student pictured on the right are part of this exercise.

THE WORLD FROM A CHILD’S POINT OF VIEW

In Early Childhood, Student Interests Spark Lessons Scheck Hillel’s early learning program creates flexible, safe spaces where teachers listen and often, in real time, use student curiosity as “teachable moments” and respond with full-blown lessons that captivate imaginations and deepen learning - rich with language and literacy, mathematical thinking, collaboration and creative wonder - all to make meaning of the world around them. In the book The Importance of Being Little, early childhood educator Erika Christakis makes the case for an environment where young children’s interests are valued and woven into classroom learning. This concept - that children appreciate and engage when their interests are reflected in teaching - happens here at Scheck Hillel every day.

A vivid example recently took place in PK3 when children learned about Parashat Bereishit, the story of Creation. In each class, the Torah portion gave rise to unique reactions and questions...In one classroom, the children were concerned about the well-being of animals and created a veterinary clinic to heal their stuffed pets. They also cared for a turtle, learning to feed and nurture it. Another group was curious about Earth, space and the planets; they learned all about astronauts and created a model volcano that erupted in class. In other rooms, students played animal Twister and classified animals by their attributes. These are all examples of how acting on student interests leads to deeper emotional bonds and engagement in the classroom.

DESIGN/STEM: Maker Spaces Promote Collaboration Design Thinking Scheck Hillel’s maker spaces are constantly evolving to add more tools and opportunities for student collaboration.

The design process - the methodology at the center of design thinking - unfolds in the these maker spaces, where students are challenged to move their ideas from head to sketch to prototype. Examples of student ideas brought to life in classes this fall include biomedical science devices and arcade games, coding and sewing projects. The I Lab (Lower School) and the Multimedia Maker Lab (Upper School) provide state of the art tools and expert guidance for makers to discover new ways of learning and of bringing their ideas to fruition.

ENRICHMENT

Eric Wainer and Joe Stern test a game in the Cardboard Challenge, a Grade 6 collaborative Design/STEM project.

Students used recycled cardboard to design, build, test, iterate and finalize their games. Every design had to incorporate circuits, decorative elements and game instructions for users.

The mission kicks off on February 6, 2019. A fashion showcase and auction will take place in the spring, with proceeds benefiting our Kulanu Scholarship Fund and the Girls Building STEAM club. Girls in Grades 3-10 who are interested in participating should contact Nancy Penchev, I LAB Instructor and Lower School Technology Coordinator (penchev@eHillel.org.) The program is partially underwritten by the TERRA Foundation.

Scheck Hillel Community School

Scheck Hillel’s Girls Building STEAM club has been awarded a grant to address ecological problems in South Florida: a mission that will pair girls in Grades 3-5 with counterparts in Grades 6-10 here on campus. The teams will investigate specific environmental issues and design wearable fashion to bring attention to the problems they’ve identified. Participants will conduct research, interview experts in the ecological fields, design the fashion piece, get feedback from technology and fashion masters, and then create the garment.

GILINSKI HILLEL AMBASSADORS: RELATIONSHIPS FOR LIFE Holding up Scheck Hillel Community School’s five core values - Kavod (Respect), Emet (Truth), Shalom (Peace), Ruach (Spirit) and Chessed (Kindness) - the 2018 Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors recently described how these values have shaped, and will continue to guide, their journeys. In ceremonies celebrating the Program’s tenth generation of Ambassadors, Gabriela Bentolila ‘19, Gabrielle Kurzer ‘20, Michael Rafalskyy ‘21, Joshua Schmutter ‘20 and Albert Wolak ‘19, spoke about the foundations of achievement, highlighting the roles that family, school and close friends have played in their growth.

Through video and anecdotes, the Gilinski Hillel Ambassadors expressed their sense of responsibility toward our community as Jewish leaders and involved citizens.

Ambassador Program Tradition The program created by Jaime and Raquel Gilinski recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to education and Scheck Hillel, encouraging lifelong learning and leadership that continuity requires.

Ambassadors showcase the Scheck Hillel mission through accomplishment and talent - in the classroom, on the field, on stage or through community service.

For 10 years, the Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program has been recognizing exceptional students; Ambassadors have graduated to Ivy leagues and top tier schools such as the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, University of Miami, University of Florida, Columbia University and Vanderbilt University, among others. As alumni, college students and young professionals, they carry the lifelong title of Gilinski Hillel Ambassador. The 20192020 application will open in spring 2019.

In November, 200 Scheck Hillel faculty and staff members gathered at the school’s Athletic Complex for a team-building exercise as part of Professional Development Day. The fast-paced, dynamic activity shed light on the incredible diversity of talents, backgrounds and dreams represented within Scheck Hillel’s professional team, and especially underscored how fortunate we are to work with colleagues who dedicate life and career to our amazing students! Teachers led workshops and exchanged expertise schoolwide, reflecting a personalized approach to professional development.

HIP/PTA’s activities and volunteers make a difference every day at Scheck Hillel. Open to parents and faculty, the group’s monthly meetings feature guest speakers from within and outside school.
