The Missing Kittens! By Ala Mutlu

I walked out of school on a Friday night. “Hi Sophia,” my mom said.”Hi mom,” I said. ”I got the best news ever!” my mom said happily. My heart was beating with excitement. Usually when my mom got good news, it was really good.”What is it?” I shouted. She held her phone up and showed me kittens. “Cotton Candy gave birth!” “So cute! ”I shouted. Everybody stared at me. ”Sophia, quiet down,” my mom shushed me. ”Sorry,” I whispered. I sat in the car seat with excitement bursting out of me. I was so expedient that I forgot to take my shoes off. As soon as I got home, I ran to where the kittens were. They were so cute. I knew I could not stay there forever as it was past 10pm. I walked up the stairs, went to my room and fell asleep. I woke up that morning and ran right to the kittens as Cotton Candy was meowing at the door.”What’s wrong, Cotton Candy?” I asked. I knew she could not answer me, but I asked her anyway. I ran to check on the kittens but first wondered why Cotton Candy was meowing. I looked to where the kittens were and suddenly, I knew why Cotton Candy was meowing. The kittens were gone! I ran upstairs to tell my mom. Then I found a note on the

kitchen counter. It said, “Gone to the grocery store.” Now there was only one thing I could do…ask my friend Lily for help. I went next door and knocked on the door. “Hi Sophia,” Lily said. “Hi Lily! Can you please help me find the missing kittens? My mom is out of the house and so is my dad and my brother and sister. Please! Please! Please! Please! Plea-” “Hold on. What kittens?” Lily asked. ”Oh, I did not tell you. Cotton Candy had babies,” I said. “Can I see them?” Lily asked. ”If we find them you could. Can you please help me?” I begged. ”Ok!”replied Lily. ”Maybe we should check Meow Shop. They might like the smell of the food.” I suggested. ”Ok, let’s go,” said Lily. We went to Meow Shop. ”Hello, have you seen 4 kittens?” I asked. “No, I have not,” the man said in a British accent. We looked all around town, the mall, the pet shop, the park, the vet, the sweets shop, the pizza shop, and we couldn't find them anywhere! Then I remembered.”Wait! The kittens cannot walk that far so they must be in the house!” I said. “You're right!” Lily said. We ran to my house. We opened the door and ”SURPRISE!” My whole family shouted holding up the kittens. I was so happy that the kittens were safe! ”So this was all planned? So you were in the house the whole time?” I asked. ”Yep, we wanted you to have an adventure,” my mom said. ”I am so happy they are safe,” I said, relieved.

Fall

vs.

Fall is so much better than winter. It is actually my favorite season of the whole year. I love the fall because of all the senses you can use, the holidays we celebrate and the many fun things there are to do. One reason I love fall is that it is the season for our senses! You see all the trees start to turn beautiful colors of orange, yellow and red. The smell of the leaves is unforgettable for me. It is comfy to sit outside by a firepit and toast marshmallows while wrapped in a warm blanket. Another reason is that fall is better than winter is that I love the holidays we celebrate during this season. I feel lucky that my birthday is in fall. Halloween is such a fun holiday. It would be too cold to trick or treat in winter. I love Thanksgiving. It is fun to go for a nice long walk after all that eating. Last, there are so many fun things to do in the fall. You can go for long walks, bike riding, apple picking, and hiking since the weather is just right. You can have fun jumping in the leaves too. It makes you really enjoy being outside with friends and family. I don’t like skiing, snowboarding or ice skating. So, as you can see, fall is far better than winter. I love the fall because I can use all my senses, celebrate some of my favorite holidays and enjoy fun things to do. Winter is too cold and boring for me. There is nothing to do but stay inside. What do you think? Am I right? - Mrs. Acosta

WINTER Winter is so much better than fall. It is actually my favorite season in the whole year! I always get excited to see trees covered in cold white snow! I love winter because it is always very exciting to see snow like this winter. At school, we saw the first snowflake land on the ground. It was so exciting. I also love winter because it has my favorite holiday and my birthday. One reason I like winter is because it has my favorite holiday. Christmas! I like Christmas because we get presents. I also get to spend time with my family! It is one of the days my dad stays at home! It is a magical time of year. Another reason I like winter is because my birthday is in winter! This is like another holiday for me! I get to eat cake and am full of happiness. I also get to have a party with my friends. It is a very important day for me! My last reason why I like winter is because I like snow! The world turns into a blob of white fluffy snow! With snow, we can build a snowman or anything you want! It is so much fun to play in the snow. Sometimes we don’t have to go to school if it snows a lot. This is the reasons why winter is better than fall. The snow and my two favorite holidays make it the best time of year. I can’t wait for winter to come again! - Jian Nam

The Big Sister Problem!!!!! By Logan Lim Once upon a time there was this big sister named Julie, and a little sister named Zoe. They were home alone in their house and playing boring board games. Their parents were out for the night at a perfume launch. They promised they would be good. But then, Julie had a very funny but a very dangerous good idea. Her plan was to tape her little sister Zoe on the kitchen wall. She called Zoe over for a snack. As Zoe came into the kitchen, Julie got the duck tape and grabbed her little sister. “Hey, what are you doing?” Zoe asked. “Just be quiet. You will see.” Julie responded with an evil laugh. She grabbed a chair and said, “If you get on the chair, I will give you a special snack.” “Really? OK!” Zoe said. Zoe climbed up on the chair. Then Julie did the impossible and taped her little sister on the wall. “Now I am going to go to my room and play video games,” Julie said. Then Zoe said, “Oh no! Please get me down. I'm going to die of hunger! Help me!” A little later, their parents came from their perfume launch and saw Zoe on the wall. Dad yelled, “What in the world is going on here?” Zoe cried, “Dad, please get me down. Julie did this to me.” Julie heard this from upstairs and hid in her room. The parents

went upstairs and went into Julie’s room. They found her under her bed. Mom said, “Julie, come out of there. Did you tape your little sister to the wall?” Julie did not know what to say. She knew she would get in big trouble. So she lied to her parents. “I didn’t do that. A robber came in and did it.” Her parents asked again knowing she was lying. But Julie kept saying it was a robber. “One last chance, Julie. Tell the truth,” mom said. “I told you. It was a robber,” Julie cried. They all went to sleep. The next morning, dad checked the security camera. He did not see any robbers, but he saw Julie taping Zoe to the wall. He showed Julie. She was caught! She started crying and saying she was sorry. But Julie got grounded anyway. She learned her mistake. “I am sorry I did that to you, Zoe,” Julie said. “I promise I won’t do it ever again.” “That’s ok,” Zoe replied. “Now, where is my snack?” The girls hugged and laughed and went to have a snack together.

The Dream By Jian Nam “AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” Jennie screamed. Ugh. Another nightmare. She looked at her calendar and noticed it was T HE DAY. It was the day she was going to her frenemy’s birthday party. Once she was her best friend, but when Jennie told her she had nightmares, she said she was a baby. Jennie didn’t know why she was invited. Probably because she wanted to make fun of her. Her feet wouldn’t go for it. She ended up arriving 10 minutes late. “Hi!” Lydia said cheerfully. That’s weird, she thought. Lydia never greeted her like this. She ignored her or said mean words that poked Jennie’s mind like sharp claws. “Okay, come in!” Lydia said. “Jennie, can we talk for a sec?” she asked. “Sure.” Jennie replied. “Follow me.,” Lydia said. They finally arrived at her room. “Look, Jennie,” she whispered. “I’m very sorry that I was mean to you this year. This time I really need your help.” “Okay,” Jennie whispered back. She took a deep breath. “I’m…….. I’m an elf.” “ YOU ARE A WHAT??!!!!” Jennie screamed.

“Shhh!” she begged. “I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true.” Now I’m going to have nightmares about evil elves, Jennie thought. “I know this is going to sound terrifying, but we have to place travel.” Lydia continued. “What’s place travel?” Jennie asked. “Oh, it’s when you fall into a portal like this!” Lydia pushed Jennie into the terrifying portal.” “AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!” she screamed. “Uhhhh, you can stop screaming now,” Lydia said. “Oh,” Jennie blurted, blushing and checking that she already landed five minutes ago. “Anyway,” Jennie said, changing the subject. “Where are we?” “We,” Lydia whispered, “are in Elfville.”, “Wow!” Jennie whispered in reply. The view was amazing. She could see colorful trees and berries that looked like shimmering crystals and light pink clouds that looked like soft blankets and just as she was drifting off to a deep sleep, Lydia said, “We have to hurry.” The two girls arrived at a small cottage that was beautiful.

It had a marvelous garden full of magnificent flowers and trees. “This is my house where my elf family lives,” Lydia explained. “So…. in the first place, why did you call me?” Jennie asked. “Oh, it’s just….. It wasn't a problem or anything. I was just going to tell you something, but I had to come to a private place to tell you.” “ So…. what is it that you wanted to tell me?” she asked curiously. “You, you are an elf like me.” Lydia stated. “WHAT!!!!???” Jennie screamed. “Yes, I know it’s very confusing, but you are one.” “Wait, are you saying that my ‘human’ parents adopted me?” she asked, totally terrified. “No. It’s just, the elves…… ummmmm… I don’t know!” Lydia admitted. ”They didn’t tell me anything! They just said to bring you to the elf world!” “Okay, okay, calm down.” Jennie said. “But, what do you mean by ‘they’.” “I… can’t tell you,” Lydia said. “WHAT!!??” Jennie said. “You-are-the-one-whobrought-me-here-and-” Jennie shouted. “Okay, I get it.” Lydia cut her off. “Last time I figured I was an elf, my best friend told me I was

one, and she wouldn’t tell me who my real parents were and I totally freaked out. I get it,” Lydia said calmly. “The people who are in charge will tell you when it’s time.” Jennie calmed herself down. Take a deep breath, exhale. Jennie thought. “So, where shoul-” Before Jennie could finish her sentence, a hand took hold of Lydia and pulled her into the cottage. “AAHH!!!!” Jennie screamed with all her might. “It’s okay.” Lydia said coming out. It was just my mom saying hi to me. She doesn-” A hand grabbed Lydia again and pulled her away. “AAAAHHHH!!!” Lydia screamed. “DO. NOT. TAKE. LYDIA!” Jennie said and chased the evil hand. The hand got ahold of her too and took her. “AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!” Jennie woke up in a cold sweat. It was eight in the morning. Phew, she thought. It was a nightmare. The first time she was grateful for nightmares! “Honey, it’s time to go to Lydia’s birthday party!” her mom shouted from downstairs. “Okay!” Jennie shouted back. For the first time, she was happy to go to Lydia’s birthday party. This time, very different from the dream. She happily skipped all the way to Lydia’s house. T HE END

The Worst Birthday Ever! By Sheridan Thompson “ Hi, I'm Sophie and my birthday is in a week.” You would probably be excited but I am not. My birthday is on June 4th. But my mom invited my ENEMY . Why is she my enemy you ask? H ere's the story: we were best friends until this one pool party when she was going in the pool with me and she suddenly pushed me in the pool and became mean to me. She even stole my BFF and since then, me and Makayla were ENEMIES! So yes, that is the story of when we became enemies, but now I am not excited to have my birthday party because since my mom is still best friends with my enemy’s mom, she invited my enemy! When I woke up the day of my birthday party, I was so annoyed that my enemy had to come. I jumped out of bed when I suddenly heard a sound. RING RING ! I heard. I then realized that I woke up just before 7:00, and I woke up just in time for my soccer game. I shouted to my mom,” MOM , I DON’T WANT TO GO TO SOCCER ..it’s my birthday.”

Then I said in a low, quiet voice, “Pleassseeee!” My mom replied, “Ok, fine. You don't have to go to soccer.” ” YAY YAY YAY YAY ! A THOUSAND TIMES YAYYY !!!” I screamed with joy! Then I ate breakfast and all and I figured out it was 6:00 and my birthday party was at 6:30. My mom yelled, “GET READY SWEETIE !” I rushed to get ready, and then I heard the doorbell. RING ! My mom opened the door, and I heard, ” H eyyy! Welcome Alice!” and I knew that was my enemy’s name. “ UH OH !” I said. I went downstairs, and there she was, my enemy. She did this dirty look at me, and I tried to do it back but I couldn't. I slowly approached her. “Come here. Let’s go in your room and do things “she said suspiciously. To Be Continued…..

The Girl in Red By Leyah Berger

Legend has it that there is a girl in red that roams the streets at night waiting for someone to take her place. Her story is dark. Once upon a time there was a little girl who had a loving family. She wasn't rich nor poor. She was in between but perfect, that’s right, perfect. She got 100% on every test in her life, never made mistakes, and had many friends, until she was sitting in class when the phone rang. When her teacher answered the phone, her jaw dropped and said ,“All right. I'll tell her the news.” The girl was wondering who it could be. She thought it sounded bad so she prepared herself for it in case it was her. “ Mia, I’m so so so sorry for you, but your family was on the way here to pick you up early for ice cream but sadly, they got in a crash with a

giant tow truck. Pack up your stuff. The police are coming to take you to the hospital.” She couldn't believe it…her worst fear coming to life. Just then, Mia’s hands started shaking and her heart thumping. She stood up and said, “ See you on the other side.” Then, just then, she passed out right then and there on the floor. Her teacher started panicking and called 911 right away, but it was too late. Mia had already passed. She thought that her family would die so she had a heart attack. But her family lived through the injuries. When she found out in heaven she begged for revenge but God said no. When she went to bed in heaven in her dreams the devil appeared. “Hey kid! I heard you want revenge on your family. I will put you back on earth and if you find someone on earth to take your place in the demon realm, I will let you be free to have revenge under one

condition, you don't age, and you have to wear red as a symbol of me. Do we have a deal?” asked the devil. And she said yes. That very morning she went on earth looking, seeking for someone,. Something the devil didn't mention is three things. One is she can't go back until someone is found. The second thing is that there was a certain person that she could grab to possess to take to the realm And lastly that she will be immortal (meaning she'll never die). When she figured out exactly how the devil wanted to play, she went along pretending that she didn't realize. Day and night she searched all around towns and cities and states except for one, New Jersey. She searched every inch of NJ except Cresskill. She's coming, and can be in your room, under your bed, in your closet, in your shower, anywhere. And to this day, she still lurks in the dark, waiting for someone to take her place. Could it be you?

POLL: Favorite Type of Music By Gia Han, Ala Mutlu, Jian Nam, and Sheridan Thompson Most kids love to listen to music. We wondered….what sort of music do kids at Merritt like most? So we asked students in Grades 2 and 3 what genre of music is their favorite. We have to admit we were a bit surprised to learn that rap music was the winner. Almost 40% of students chose this as their favorite. In second place was pop/Kpop music. This was liked by 32% of students. Another surprise was seeing that classical music beat out rock ‘n roll and country music. That’s right! Classical was third with 12.5%. Rock ‘n roll was close behind with 11.5%. Country music was the least favorite of our students. Only about 5% of students preferred this type of music. We wonder if the results would have been the same if we asked the entire school. What do you think? Do you agree with these results?

The Balloon Ride By Gia Han One time a girl named Alice drove to a beach. And one day she saw a red balloon on a yellow chair. She ran up to the chair. Alice grabbed the balloon. It had a cute smiley face on it. She loved it! Alice ran with the balloon, played with the balloon, and did a lot of more activities with the balloon. She played and played. She played for over an hour. When she finally stood up, she was still holding the balloon. All of a sudden, she was lifted up into the air. She flew up higher and higer to the sky. At first she was scared and squeezed her eyes closed. But then she heard and felt the wind on her face, and she opened her eyes. The view looked beautiful. Everything looked so tiny. Everything felt so peaceful. She felt she was going down, lowerand lower. Finally, she landed on the ground. She was in Mexico! But she did not notice she was in Mexico. She walked and walked. Alice walked until she was hungry. Then she saw some fresh berries near a river with fresh water. She saw people and heard them speaking in Spanish. She did not understand, but she did not mind. She just started to pick some of the berries and washed them in the

water so she could eat them. They were really good! Alice ate and ate until she was full. Then she walked and thought about why all the people were talking in Spanish. AAAHH! Alice now knew! She was in Mexico! Suddenly, she was panicking to death. What is happening? How will I get home, she thought. Alice ran in circles not knowing what to do. She tried to ask people in English, but the people around her did not understand. After all the craziness, she spotted some balloons at an outdoor birthday party. She ran up and grabbed a bunch. Then she closed her eyes and prayed this worked. Please! I need to get home! Please! Gently, she slowly started to float into the air. She flew all the way back home. She finally let go of the balloons when she landed where she started this journey, and then she ran home. Now that was a adventurous trip! Alice thought. But never again!

Hello my name is Maya, and I am an actor. I have been acting since I was 5. My mom thinks I should study to be a doctor but who cares? I wanna follow my heart. I am from Asia. It’s fun being Indian. I am 15 years old, and I am acting in a show Love in the Air. Anyway this is my story.

“Ugh, Maria. You don’t get it. I have to finish sewing this dress by next week,” “I think you can live. *chuckle*” “I ca-” “Maya!? Umm hello? Ohhhh, I get it.. you're pranking me. That's funny. You can come out now.”

*Screen turns on, and Maria saw she was being kidnapped*

“Ahhhhhhhhhhh!” *Maria shrieks and takes a screenshot.* 🌟 🌟 🌟 “Mom, it has been weeks, and she still hasn’t shown up,” explained Maria. “You have to be patient. You know that the search team is

still looking for her, and it's nice that they still are. They are supposed to only look for someone for 1-2 weeks, and it has been about 4-5 weeks so when they come-”

*Search team comes through the door.*

“We found something…” “We found this light pink shirt piece on the branch along with a phone and a piece of paper.” “That's all she had when it happened… Wait! Did you say paper? She didn't have a paper on her. What does it say?” asked Maria. “It says…45 Weschreast Drive. David, Blanch, Mylies…make sure the headlights don't shine in your eyes too much tonight.” “Omg, that's our code word for danger. Headlights! We made it up when we were three. That's also the name of the kidnappers and the address of where they took her.” “Wow! I'm surprised you know this. Let me call the chief to see if he’ll let you help on the case.”

*At 3am*

“Back away from the case or else,” somebody whispered.

“Mom, I'm hearing voices now at night.” “You're probably paranoid because of your friend.” “Mom, actually… this isn't a joke. Someone was threatening me to back off the case if I’m working on this. I need help.”

“You already have the search team.” “Ya, but during the meetings they just eat ice cream and pretend to listen. Then they go out into the woods and do nothing.” “Okay fine but I’m telling you, you sound greedy.” “Whatever.” 🌟 🌟 🌟

was so much action. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. The animals on the island were crazy! My favorite part of the movie is when Sean and his dad step onto giant lizard eggs and Sean’s dad tries to punch it. It is a fun movie to watch with your friends or family.
