Speakers discussed the importance of having supportive governments to boost the oil and gas business and help the energy transition.

“The most important thing Dragon Oil found is that cooperation with the government is fantastic. We are partners with the government through the EGPC,” Al Jarwan noted.

Rigas agreed saying that “it is very rewarding to be investing, it is very rewarding to be doing business in countries like Egypt, where there is a great support of governments.”

Capricorn sees “a very attractive investments destination, and why do we see that? Because the government is supportive. They want Egypt to reduce more. They want net-zero on a responsible basis, but there is a huge demand for oil and gas not just locally, but also regionally,” Thomson added.

Energy transition could not have come at a more convenient time, when advanced technology can support achieving it. “I think it is will be the era of innovation because a lot of changes are happening to the industry.

On the second day of the fifth anniversary edition of the Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPS 2022), a highly informative Strategic Conference took place at the Egypt International Exhibition Center.

This conference has successfully connected industry leaders from several countries to talk about the updates of the oil & gas, and energy industry worldwide.

The Strategic Conference reviewed both energy challenges and opportunities, especially in Egypt, Africa and the East Mediterranean.

Connected Market The first discussion of the second day of EGYPS 2022 was the Strategic global business leaders session, entitled ‘Unlocking Energy Independence through Connected Oil and Gas Markets’, which covered international cooperation between the major energy players, governments, and industry organisation and its role in creating a monetised, connected, and decarbonised oil and gas market.

Securing energy is vital for developing economies worldwide. In order to decrease the global carbon footprint and create a world with less carbon emissions, the energy industry needs effective regulations, continued investments, and global and regional cross-border cooperation between all oil and gas players, including producers, consumers, and transit countries. The session will tackle the subject of ensuring open dialogue between these industry players in order to enhance cooperation and coordinate efforts to ensure the monetisation of climate-conscious oil and gas market.

The session hosted energy distinguished speakers, including Alaa Elbatal, CEO of the Egyptian General Corporation (EGPC); Mathios Rigas, CEO of Energean; Ali Rashid Al Jarwan, CEO of Dragon Oil; and Simon Thomson, CEO of Capricorn Energy. The first global business leaders’ session was moderated by Eithne Treanor, EGYPS 2022 Presenter.

And thus, we are agile enough to follow the changes and put solutions for all the things,” Al Jarwan said giving an example of integrity management for old facilities saying that “there are a lot of talented people, putting their strategy, and putting their priorities to be sure that business continuity was not affected.”

Meanwhile, Rigas talked about the role companies play in Energy transition, saying “the role that [IOCs] are playing is investing, and Energean invests more than $3 billion. I was listening to people saying that one of the reasons for the energy crisis is that there hasn’t been investments from oil and gas companies.

Why are people not investing? Energean is not one of the super majors obviously and we have been investing $3 billion in the East Mediterranean and that is prove of our commitment to the region and what this region could bring to the rest of the world.”

Commenting on Energean’s energy transition journey, Rigas noted that the company was “the first E&P company in the world to make a commitment to net-zero,” in 2019. “We saw it coming, we saw their ways to push back from ESG coming to the industry, and we moved from being a 100% oil producer to gas, and then we have actively working to reduce our CO2 emissions to become less than 7 kilos per barrel of oil equivalent.”

The distinguished panellists further discussed the important thing to consider in order to achieve energy transition. Rigas said that in order to achieve energy transition goals, one “needs to be focused, need to be delivering messages to one’s investors that ESG is extremely important.”

Meanwhile, Thomson highlighted the importance of addressing people’s behaviour in order to walk down the energy transition path. “Unless the consumers change their habit in their lifetime, we are not going to achieve what we are trying to achieve.”

Additionally, Elbatal expressed his thoughts that “all IOCs talk the same language and they are already committed to decarbonisation and reducing the emissions. The two painful points for them are the finances, and that is a very important point, and also the duration,” adding that “COP27 in November 2022 will be a very good opportunity to get outside of this an output a recommendation of a timeframe and a way forward for the duration.”

“In Egypt, and the petroleum sector precisely, we are looking for decarbonisation and we are committed, as all the companies and countries working for

decarbonisation. We are undergoing right now a lot of decarbonisation projects ad they are on their way to implementation right now in some big JVs,” Elbatal added.

Despite planning on energy transition, the world should continue providing fossil fuels to supply people’s demands. “We have to continue to produce and increase the production and also to start the decarbonisation and reduce emissions. This is a difficult equation actually, not for us only in Egypt here and the petroleum sector but also for any producing country,” Elbatal noted.

“The oil and gas is a very important aspect to the energy mix or the energy marathon if you like or the energy journey,” Al Jarwan agreed.

Transition’ witnessed global business leaders discussing natural gas’ significance as a major bridge in energy transition. In the coming decades, the global economies and industries will see cleaner energy alternatives.

Accordingly, the distinguished leaders will tackle how could today’s collaboration between industries, in research and development (R&P) as well as technology deployment in the natural gas supply chain, promote the economic and environmental benefits of switching to gas. The panellists will talk about the global gas pricing case, as well as the role of natural gas in supporting global economies as they switch from coal. The energy leaders will further discuss boosting the usage of gas as a blue hydrogen source, tackling its long-term benefits in decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

The panellists were Magdy Galal, Chairman of the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS); De La Rey Venter, Executive Vice President of LNG West & CCUS Shell; John Ardill, Vice President of Exploration at ExxonMobil; Dawn Summers, Chief Operating Officer at Wintershall Dea; and Clay Neff, President of Chevron Middle East, Africa, South America, Exploration and Production Company. The session was moderated by Martin Houston, Vice Chairman of Tellurian.

Galal talked about the route Egypt used to turn itself from an importer to an exporter of natural gas and the major steps taken to achieve this. “It was a long journey, it was hard, but we did it” Commenting on Egypt’s strategy to be an energy hub, Galal said “I am looking forward to, the first priority for me actually is to bring all the gas production from the East Mediterranean to Egypt,” to use Egypt’s infrastructure.

In order to have a green future, all sectors need to collaborate. “There is a lot more that we should do. Firstly, we absolutely need the entire industry from upstream through to downstream gas distribution needs to eliminate routine flaring and get rid of methane emissions. There are still way too many actors in the industry that does not take this seriously enough that really harms the prospects of gas,” said Venter, adding that “The second, that is also immediate, is that we really need to step on deep decarbonisation of existing LNG value chains.

Neff agreed saying “I see a bright future. It is going to require partnerships, and people working together.”

“We are going to need patience, diverse mindsets, and also a lot of sense of humour as we move forward to the transition,” Summers added.

Meanwhile, Ardill highlighted the importance of energy security. “The energy transition does provide a great opportunity to pivot a low-carbon future,” he said, highlighting. “As we look to decarbonize very rapidly, ensuring energy security” is important, he said, adding that “when we don’t ensure energy security, historically that leads to conflict over resources,” he noted.

Shifting Downstream Landscape The fourth session entitled “Driving an Attractive Oil and Gas Investment Climate in Egypt, North Africa and the Mediterranean” included a discussion between six global oil and gas leaders, and was moderated by Treanor.

The session covered the downstream industry outlook. The global refining sectors were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic as the supply and demand fluctuation reached unprecedented levels. Meanwhile, the plastic production and petrochemical industry faced environmental challenges due to the use of PPE. As the world strives to have a sustainable value chain, and decrease energy intensive distillation, the industry leaders discussed employing climate conscious transformation in the downstream industry. The panellists will further tackle integrated refinery-petrochemical facilities and their benefits in processing many feedstocks using low carbon technology and producing grey hydrogen. They also talked about the expected long-term effects caused by oil demand and the fuel retail from transportation sectors electrification.

The industry leaders in the discussion were Jean Sentenac, President & CEO of Axens; Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO of Maire Tecnimont Group; Saad Helal, President and Chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM); Hisham Selim, Chairman of the Suez Methanol Derivatives Company (SMD); and Paul Marsden, President of Energy Bechtel.

The final discussion of the second day of EGYPS 2022 Strategic sessions, entitled ‘Connected Energy Ecosystem: Billion-Dollar Savings’ covered digital transformation and how technology is advancing. The distinguished energy leaders discussed how adapting technology throughout energy value chains can enable faster transformation, and integrate as well as unlock cost-saving and optimum efficiency across all the operational and business assets. The session further tackled how emerging unified enterprise data platforms can be a game changer, which eliminates digital silos as it establishes a connected oil and gas ecosystem that leads to deeper intelligent insights.

The session’s speakers were Sara Akbar, Oilserv Chairperson & CEO; Walid Sheta, Schneider Electric’s President Middle East and Africa; Colin Hu, Huawei Technologies’ President of North Africa Region Enterprise Business Group; and Sherif Foda, National Energy Services Reunited (NESR)’s Chairman of the Board & CEO. The session was moderated by Aida Araissi, CEO of the Bilateral US Arab Chamber of Commerce.

Ministerial Interview At the end of the strategic conference, Treanor interviewed H.E. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla on Egypt’s energy sector and his opinion of EGYPS so far.

El Molla stated that the discussions in EGYPS revolved around energy transition, which is paving the way for COP27, as it tackled “how we need to re-focal and to eco the energy transition, and how we could fully optimize responsibly our hydrocarbons.” The minister noted that Egypt is “going to represent Africa in COP27, and the countries alike, where we need to demonstrate the need to be rational, the need to be reasonable, and the need to be objective.”

The minister further talked about Egypt’s target on becoming an energy hub, highlighting that EGYPS empowers this vision. El Molla further talked about the downstream sector and marketing petroleum products, saying that prices encouraged foreign companies to boost their investments in the downstream.

Regarding compressed natural gas (CNG) development, El Molla said urged companies to invest in CNG as it is “big future, big potential for us, where also we have adjusted the pricing mechanism in order to make sure that there is a good difference in price, 50% at least, between gasoline price and CNG price, which also is in itself an incentive to motorists to convert their vehicles.”

El Molla, talked about the success of the fifth edition of EGYPS so far. “It was a fantastic, excellent edition of EGYPS this year. The highlight is definitely the engagement of His Excellency President Sisi.”

The minister talked about the president’s support saying “our leader is supporting the conference, supporting the industry, and supporting the strategy, and I think it is very important.”

HONEYWELL: REFINING THE FUTURE OF THE ENERGY SECTOR AN INTERVIEW WITH JIM MOSHI, GENERAL MANAGER, HONEYWELL UOP MIDDLE EAST

Jim Moshi, General Manager of Honeywell UOP Middle East, offers interesting insights on how his company seeks to improve operational efficiency within the sector while achieving excellence in sustainability.

How does Honeywell UOP factor in sustainability in its products?

Honeywell UOP innovates flexible, future-forward and sustainable solutions that address the challenges of an ever-changing world. Our core process technologies in refining and petrochemical integration, part of what we call the “Refinery of the Future”, help to reduce overall carbon emissions of a plant including scope 3.

The Refinery of the Future will be capable of upgrading crude oil into an increasingly higher proportion of petrochemicals and clean fuels.

Today we are designing plants that can convert more than half their crude intake to petrochemicals, with the ultimate goal of a refinery capable of producing 100% petrochemicals. More effective conversion of crude to petrochemicals means more efficient operations, and lower consumption overall.

Through innovative technologies, we are playing a critical role in countries that are actively pursuing sustainability goals to reduce carbon emissions.

Beyond our core process technologies, our portfolio stretches across plastics circularity, refining to convert natural oils, animal fats and other waste feedstock to sustainable fuels, battery energy storage, carbon capture, hydrogen solutions, and energy management systems to support the transition to alternative energy sources.

What is Honeywell’s strategy to enhance operational efficiency?

Key areas playing an important role in enhancing operational efficiencies in the Refinery of the Future include automation and remote access. Our customers want the right technologies to enable plant management from virtually anywhere in the world, with capabilities that can be scaled up in minutes, with real-time support and insights, and that can be heavily automated to ensure operational efficiency, productivity and yield are maximised, and unplanned downtime kept to a minimum.

For example, our Connected Services is a powerful, digitally-enabled solution that provides greater operational visibility and allows refiners and petrochemical operations to readily identify performance gaps and opportunities. It offers everything from proactive monitoring with round-the-clock alert management, to operational and performance benchmarking and on-demand troubleshooting anywhere in the world. Alongside this, our Performance Solutions capabilities bring together Honeywell UOP knowledge, experts and

industry-leading digital tools to deliver customers everything from upgrade support to engineering, equipment, catalyst management, and access to our lab and catalyst testing capabilities.

What are the latest technologies that Honeywell employs in its operations and what enhancements does it hope to make in the future?

One of the reasons we are so well positioned to support customers on their climate objectives is we understand what it takes for a business to get to net zero. We have a portfolio of technologies for key economic sectors designed specifically to reduce energy consumption while maintaining operational integrity. But crucially, we are employing many of those very technologies within our own operations, as part of our own commitment to reach net zero in operations and facilities by 2035.

We have already achieved a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity and delivered an approximate 70% improvement in energy efficiency since 2004, and 50% of new product R&D investment at Honeywell is focused on solutions that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers.

We are working in pioneering areas to make this possible and in the coming months and years you are going to see a lot more from us and our customers and partners in critical applications such as carbon capture, battery storage and sustainable aviation fuel.

For example, in September 2021, Honeywell and United announced a joint multimillion dollar investment in Alder Fuels – a clean tech company that is pioneering first-of-its-kind technologies for producing sustainable aviation fuel at scale by converting abundant biomass, such as forest and crop waste, into low-carbon, drop-in replacement crude oil that can be used to produce aviation fuel.

And in October we announced our new flow battery technology, which works with renewable generation sources to meet the demand for sustainable energy storage. The new flow battery uses a safe, non-flammable electrolyte that converts chemical energy to electricity to store energy for later use while meeting the environmental, longevity and safety objectives of utilities.

These are just a couple of examples of how we are bringing “ready now” and “ready near” bridge technologies to market to support the energy transition.

Worley is a pre-eminent professional services provider in the Middle East and Egypt and we have undertaken many mega projects under PMC contracts. There are many evolving opportunities in the Middle East and Egypt and it would be good to discuss this with the leaders in their business.

Could you please comment on what you think makes EGYPS a unique international platform that encourages bolstering cooperation among major companies worldwide?

EGYPS attracts 26,000 attendees both from local and international businesses. We are particularly excited about the opportunity to network in the petroleum club where most of my colleagues will be during the conference.

This in itself is a unique idea and we would welcome anyone in the club to reach out to us during our time here.

We are very excited to be part of EGYPS 2022. Many of our national, regional and international customers are here and we will be signing some important MoUs during our time here as well.

In your opinion, how can oil and gas industry cope with some of the most common challenges it faces today?

To what extent Huawei technologies impact the oil and gas development?

It is no exaggeration that the energy sector is facing massive upheaval and challenges. The oil and gas industry needs to grapple with social and economic pressures to both maintain their competitive position and additionally be seen as good global citizens.

The data challenge that organisations face needs to be approached in a three-stage process. Due to the complexity of service scenarios, the oil and gas industry needs to implement intelligence by cloud, edge, and devices in a hierarchical and layered way.

The three main challenges that the resources sector faces include:

First, we need to build digital twins for business scenarios to achieve comprehensive digitalization. Second, data needs to be aggregated and consolidated to achieve hierarchical intelligence. Finally, we need to eliminate system and data silos and build basic industry application capabilities based on digital platforms in order to support rapid service reconstruction and achieve comprehensive intelligence. For example, in the exploration and production field, Huawei and partners have built cognitive computing AI platforms for Chinese oil and gas companies and applied AI and big data analytics to improve oil and gas reserves and production, seismic data processing, oil and gas reservoir identification, and diagnosis of pumping well conditions. This way, we can release more value from data that was once ‘silent and useless’.

Reducing costs to remain competitive – resources extraction and production continue to become more expensive, as environmental, regulatory, and operational costs escalate. Optimizing production systems and site management is a renewed priority for these businesses.

Improving performance to promote the valorisation of assets – resources companies need to develop ways to extend the life of mature sites and seek new sources for extraction in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Improving the environmental footprint – social pressure demands that resources companies become leaders in sustainability and renewable energy investment. What’s more, resources companies are major consumers of water and energy resources themselves and need to be seen as doing the right thing to be good corporate citizens in the application of those resources.

As noted in a McKinsey report on the state of the oil and gas industry, “This is a moment for oil and gas companies to make thoughtful choices, both to improve their economic and reputational resilience and to consider whether and how to reposition themselves to take advantage of the accelerating low-carbon winds of change.”

For resources companies, the answer to these challenges is in technology and transformation.

We should bear in mind that oil and gas companies need to leverage ICT technologies and management processes to increase reserves and production, and reduce operating costs while improving security. Huawei believes that the technologies that have the greatest

An example of this in action can be seen in Daqing Oilfield, China’s largest oilfield. After 60 years of operation, the business was facing enormous challenges in terms of reserve replacement, stable production pressure, and the need to reduce costs and find new efficiencies.

To help it address these challenges, Huawei built a dedicated oil and gas exploration cloud.

The cloud data center improves computing power by eight times and has similarly improved pre-stack seismic data processing capability by five times, from 400 square km to 2,000 square km, matching work area requirements.

Elsewhere, AI and big data capabilities have been used to re-analyse 10 PB of Daqing Oilfield’s historical exploration data, to mine new value from it and support extraction decision-making, bringing huge additional value to the oilfield.

What is Huawei’s Vision for the best utilisation of sustainable resources?

In addition, Huawei is actively assisting its customers towards carbon neutrality.

For example, Huawei is developing the zero-carbon smart campus solution; It is also incubating capabilities and solutions for energy efficiency management, multi-energy complementation, and carbon management while ensuring secure and efficient operations of campus networks. The solution can be widely applied in oil and gas fields, refineries, and campuses in the future. In short, Huawei uses digital technologies to support all aspects of energy supply and consumption, enabling the energy transformation, digital transformation, and net-zero transformation of the energy industry.

What impacts on oil and gas companies has a flow-on effect to the entire economy. It is important, both for the development of a carbon-neutral society and continuing to improve the quality of life of people, that oil and gas companies find ways to leverage technology to drive better efficiencies and greater sustainability.

A SUMMIT FOR FINANCE AND INVESTMENT Understanding the significance of novel partnership and investment models in the energy value chain, David Chi, Regional Vice President and General Manager Apache, said that there is a lot of conversation about climate change, but in order to really have an effective approach, we don’t have to curb energy, pointing that there is a growing need for clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

Sameh Sabry, Senior Vice President and Managing Director – Egypt, Wintershall Dea, talked about his company’s commitment to the energy transition and achieving net zero by 2030. “This commitment is in line with our position as the leading independent oil and gas company. Nevertheless, to achieve that, this will require a lot of effort,” Sabry said.

For the CEO of HSBC Egypt Todd Wilcox, the energy transition does not – and should not – happen overnight, on the contrary it should take its time.

Forward-looking financial strategies for the energy industry

The second edition of the EGYPS Finance & Investment Summit, which took place on the second day of the conference, convened a galaxy of global finance and energy leaders who thoroughly debated the future of governance, investment, and cost management models for the energy value chain whilst paving the way for a global decarbonised economy.

And as multinational companies begin venturing into untapped markets to safeguard their continuity, the EGYPS Finance & Investment Summit served as a perfect venue for investment leaders to share experiences and how they are revisiting their business models and investment strategies whilst complying with evolving economic scenarios that ensure their business survival.

Reactivating Global Economies through Pioneering Fiscal Policies During a ministerial keynote speech, His Excellency Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait showcased how governments and global financial entities have been crucial in helping the world recover from the recent economic turmoil, with Egypt being the basis for his argument. Maait highlighted the crucial role of government bodies, particularly the Ministry of Finance, in realigning fiscal responsibilities to address the immediate priorities through various stimulus packages.

Maait maintained that economic and sustainable growth will continue to be the main priority of the Egyptian government and the Ministry of Finance. “Egypt has consistent growth over the years, recording a 5.3% and 5.6% in 2017, 2018, 2019 and then dropped during the pandemic to 3.3% in 2019/20. Such levels are still important given the global slowdown and the challenges faced as a result of covid,” he said.

“As for our growth projections, we target a growth rate of more than 5.7%in this financial year of 2021/2022. In 2022/2023, we project that we will also grow by about 5.7%, putting us back at pre-covid growth rate levels,” Maait added, attributing this economic growth to sustainable investments, “In fact, green investments have reached around 30% of this year’s budget.”

Egypt was the first to issue green bonds in Africa and the Middle East, where in September 2020, the Ministry of Finance successfully issued the first sovereign green bonds in Africa and MENA region for $750 million, the minister explained.

It is important to shed light on the important projects funded by the green bond and its contributions to improving the Egyptians’ lives, he further stressed.

According to the finance minister, “in November 2021, the MoF made publicly available its first annual allocation and environmental impact report for the 15 national green projects that were financed through the proceeds of the green bonds. Of the total bond proceeds, 46% were allocated to green transportation projects and 54% to sustainable water and desalination management projects.”

In line with the MoF’s goals to diversify its resources, the ministry issued its first green loan for an amount of $1.5 billion from a group of international and commercial banks, the minister further noted, adding that the issuance of the loan was met by high demand. “I confirm Egypt’s continuous commitment towards sustainable development in partnership with the private sector and the ministry,” the minister concluded in his speech.

Supporting Energy Financing In line with the climate goals, speakers in a panel, which was entitled “Bolstering international partnerships to boost energy investments and support project financing”, attempted to present a full picture of the climate dilemma, the point of view of oil and gas supermajors and the point of view of those ready to finance institutions’ climate goals.

Another key session under the title “Forward-looking financial strategies for the energy industry” convened finance leaders to sketch out the futuristic finance and investment strategies to maintain cash flow and business continuity and sustainability during price falls and economic volatility.

Maria Martin, Head of Corporate Finance at Energean, said “it is a really exciting time to be part of things… we need to be adapting,” adding that “we should look at gas as a transition.”

James Smith, CFO Capricorn Energy insisted that “the question that is missing from the debate who’s paying for that transition,” but then goes on saying, “I think we will see capital coming from different parts of the world.” On the other hand, Mohamed Mostafa, Head of Finance PICO Cheiron recommended that the process to convert to green economy shouldn’t be fast-tracked, and hence, rushed.

Advancing digital investments in the energy industry The weak demand for commodities during the pandemic has heightened the importance of investing in digital technologies. This discussion during a session, under the title “Advancing digital investments in the energy industry for cost efficiency and resource optimization”, focused on the significance of digital investments in the energy industry to break operational silos, protect critical assets from cyber-attacks, and ensure a consistent return on investments in the long run whilst paving the way for a net zero economy.

“Some say the pandemic is the shining armour of digitization,” Karim Badawi, Managing Director - Egypt and East Mediterranean Schlumberger said, further explaining that the last two years have been instrumental, hammering on the power of human connection, digital enablement, modernisation. “The Egyptian Upstream Gateway (EUG) came in the perfect time, while Egypt’s first digital bid round came in the middle of the pandemic,” he pointed out “I would love to start just before the pandemic [when] H.E Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla was actually the executive responsible for the digitization of the sector,” Hoda Mansour, SAP Head of Business Process Intelligence EMEA South SAP said, adding that this why he had a very clear vision when it comes to digitisation. “So, we proceeded full force, full speed, with a very clear vision,” she emphasised, adding “I think this also reflects the resilience that is coming from Egypt and the growth that Egypt witnessed in the pandemic.”

The summit comprised panels titled two other panels under the titles “Unlocking energy markets of the future; Supporting energy sector stability” and “Accelerating sustainable investments.”

Global Finance & Investment Awards Ceremony Fully supported by and in alignment with the objectives of the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the Global Finance and Investment Awards recognised the achievements of senior finance leaders and organisations in the global energy space for their contributions to the industry.

The winners and highly-commended of both categories were awarded in a ceremony during the Financial Investment Summit. The Global Finance Leader of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding global finance leaders for their contributions for growth and profitability of their business was shared by Sherine Zohdy, Finance Manager of Wintershall Dea and Ahmad Ali Binobood, Chief Financial Officer of Dragon Oil. As for the Global Financial Institution of the Year Award, Banque Misr took home the prize. This category recognized global financial institutions and trade bodies that contribute to and support the energy sector.

EGYPT, YEMEN SIGN PETROLEUM, NATURAL GAS, MINING MOU H.E. Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek Molla and H.E. Yemeni Minister of Oil and Minerals Abdulsalam Baaboud have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the fields of petroleum, natural gas, and mining on the first day of EGYPS 2022.

This MoU aims to exchange scientific,

technical, and technological expertise in the oil and gas field as well as explore partnerships with specialised petroleum companies to design and build petroleum projects in Yemen; in addition to developing the institutional framework and organisational structure in the Yemeni petroleum, natural gas, and mining sector.

COPETROLE, EMARAT MISR SIGN FIELD TRAINING AGREEMENT Kicking off to a vibrant start, the first day of EGYPS 2022 witnessed the signing of a cooperation protocol between Egypt’s Cooperation Petroleum Company (Copetrole) and the UAE’s Emarat Misr.

This agreement will involve the exchange of training, knowledge, and expertise in marketing petroleum products, mixing oils,

and marketing tools.

The agreement was signed by Copetrole Chairman Ayman Naguib and Emarat Misr’s General Manager Mohamed Gomaa.

It was witnessed by H.E. Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and H.E. UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazrouei.

SIDPEC TO TAKE PART IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF PETROCHEMICAL COMPLEX IN NIGERIA H.E. Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek Molla and his Nigerian counterpart H.E. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Chief Timipre Marlin Sylva have witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Egyptian Sidi Kerir Petrochemicals Company (SIDPEC) and Rangas Nigeria.

The agreement will involve the construction

of a complex for petrochemical production in Nigeria in light of SIDPEC’s well-known expertise in this regard. SIDPEC will contribute to providing technical support throughout various stages of the project.

The two signatories of this agreement included SIDPEC Chairman and CEO Mohamed Ibrahim and the CEO of Rangas Nigeria.

MOP, APACHE SIGN MOU TO DEVELOP KHALDA AND QARUN The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Apache Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost future cooperation to develop Khalda Petroleum Company and Qarun Petroleum Company.

The MoU aims to enhance government policies, improve human resource systems, build cadres, and support digital transformation to meet international best practices; after the merger of the two companies in a unified commitment

agreement in December 2021.

ENI PETROLEUM SECTOR MOU Eni has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Egypt’s petroleum sector to reduce carbon emissions out in the fields.

OTHER NOTABLE MOUS Egypt’s petroleum sector companies have signed notable MoUs and agreements with companies including Emerson, Linde, FMTC, and other multinational companies that aim to make remarkable contributions to the sector.

Minister of Petroleum and Resources Tarek El Molla witnessed the signing of a number of memoranda of understandings (MoU) in the field of training and qualifying young and medium leaders with a number of international oil and energy companies to launch and sponsor the new phase of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ Middle-Management program, which is a part of the Modernisation Project.

From the Egyptian side, Alaa Hagar, Head of the Central Administration of the Technical Office at the Ministry of Petroleum, signed the MoUs. REVOLUTIONISING THE GAS SECTOR THROUGH OPERATIONAL ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY

The second day of EGYPS Technical Conference had a flow of discussions aimed at giving insight into the conference’s theme “Delivering Energy Today and Shaping the Future Energy Agenda”.

The first technical session was co-chaired by Hamada Ahmed Mohamed, Deputy General Manager of Gas Facilities, Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Ehab El Gayesh, Senior Contract Performance Manager, Baker Hughes. The technical session, which was held under the title “Operational Innovations in Gas/LNG,” included four presentations addressing ‘Gas/LNG Processing, Transportation, Operations and Technology.

Despite the challenges associated with the project, Atwa elaborated that there are multiple advantages of using fiberglass pipeline, such as “lower cost, higher construction speed, high corrosion resistance, low pipeline roughness, no wielding or inspection is required and [there is an] adequate pressure rating to handle required inlet and discharge pressures.”

The first presentation addressed “Piping vibration analysis and effects”.

The speaker was Kamal Abo El-kamal, Senior Reliability and Condition Monitoring Engineer, Petrobel, Egypt.

Abo El-kamal kicked off the technical session by indicating that, “Vibration induced fatigue failures of pipework are a major concern due to associated issues with safety, production, cost, environmental impact and sudden release of pressurised fluids.”

Additionally, Abo El-kamal mentioned that there are various different types of piping vibration assessments. On a similar note, he added that in a particular case study, “EI guidelines, piping stress analysis, Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) methodology and modal analysis [were implemented] while putting into consideration the change of gas upstream and downstream parameters.” In doing so, the piping vibration analysis was carried out successfully.

Mohamed Atwa, Senior Production Technology Manager, Kuwait Energy, Egypt contributed to the session with a presentation on “Fiberglass pipelines application growth and challenges in Egypt”. He introduced his idea about the benefits and challenges of Fiberglass applications in Egypt.

When discussing the Al Jahraa Gas Pipeline project, he indicated that the main aim of the project was to “Allocate gas pipeline installed

Dr.Hassan Elnagar Hassan, Assistant General Manager of Operation, Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Co. (ANRPC), Egypt, concluded the session with a presentation on “Improving the waxy crude oil flows by using innovative polymer as pour point depressant”.

He added to his presentation with the fact that Pour Point Depressant (PPD) consumption in Egypt is high and that the problem is that “the crude oil is liquid in the reservoir temperature (70-150C) and pressure (500-1,000 bar). Once the crude oil leaves the reservoir, its temperature begins to drop due to heat loss.”

Hassan explained over the course of the scientific research, “it was found that the doped polymer were more efficient as PPDs than undoped polymer.

In another session, a group of four presenters discussed “Tackling gas processing challenges”. They have shared the studies conducted on some fields to mitigate such concerns. The technical session was co-chaired by Nicolas Droushiotis, Senior Project Engineer, Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company and Aamer Mohamed, Egypt Planning Lead, Apache Egypt.

According to Agizah, there are several field application challenges and limitations that need to be taken into consideration for such applications. Some examples of such challenges range from the accumulation of huge amounts of liquid hold up in the subsea network (which could inhibit productivity) to having a shortage in chemical injection lines whether on onshore or in subsea facilities.

He concluded that with some recommendations such as, “it is necessary to consider the availability of injection lines for chemical treatment products of gas, oil or condensate to avoid utilising the existing injection line which [are] used for industrial chemicals such as Methanol and MEG”.

Ehab Elghayesh, Senior Contracts Performance Manager, Baker Hughes, Egypt introduced a presentation on the “LNG processing, transportation, operations and technology”. Elghayesh discussed the global view of the LNG process chain, LNG trade and refrigeration drivers as well as Baker Hughes’ contribution to the LNG industry in Egypt.

Elghayesh noted that “for sure, we have a lot of lessons learned, we have a lot of experience. We are going to use our history in LNG to create a new model to enhance operations.”

Mohamed Kamal Gaber, Senior Process and Pipeline Design Engineer, PETROJET, Egypt, delivered a presentation on the “Flare gas recovery – multi approaches”. Gaber discussed the approach to reaching a solution to mitigate loss or waste of energy and heat through flare gas.

Gaber noted that “there are 3 approaches to solutions for gas flare recovery; these are LRC, MPP and C3 recovery.”

HSE IN ENERGY EXAMINES EFFECTIVE STANDARDS, SUPPORTS DECARBONISATION The second day of EGYPS 2022 witnessed several discussion panels on different topics with a conference dedicated to health, safety and environment (HSE). The HSE in Energy Conference was a perfect venue for international and regional HSE experts to share their insights, examine digital innovation for developing effective health and safety standards as well as strategies for employees’ health and wellbeing in addition to discuss companies’ decarbonisation efforts and the growing role of leadership in ensuring high HSE standards.

The conference included three panel discussions, two fireside chats and a live Q&A session. The event was concluded by the third edition of EGYPS Global HSE Excellence Awards to recognise outstanding as well as the effective HSE projects and programmes from around the world.

The conference was opened by Sameh Sabry, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Wintershall Dea Egypt, who referred to his company’s commitment to HSE throughout its 45-year presence in Egypt. “Through those 45 years, we have been so committed to HSE,” Sabry indicated.

Sabry elaborated that there is a challenge that should be addressed in this region, where the culture and mindset towards HSE are sometimes seen as a luxury, affirming that caring about the safety of people, environment and communities is essential.

In her keynote speech, Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, highlighted the importance of population health and how this can contribute to the economic development of countries. She said that “20 years earlier, there was a contradictory relationship between development and environment, however, this concept has changed”.

Fouad tackled how Egypt is supporting the oil and gas industry regionally, considering energy transition and carbon emission reduction. At the end of her speech, the minister affirmed that there are three areas oil and gas sector should consider in partnership with the Environment Ministry for HSE as well as climate change targets, which include financing climate change projects, availability of latest technologies and building capabilities.

Strategic Priorities Within HSE The first panel discussion was held under the title “Setting Up Strategic Priorities within HSE”. The panel, which was moderated by Wael Amin, Head of HSE at Kuwait Energy, reviewed the key pillars that formulate companies’ HSE strategies and how the industry prepared for COVID-19 pandemic. Amir Gerges, Vice President Safety at Shell started the discussion, referring to several strategies adopted by his

company including commitments and goals for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. “No harm and no leaks,” Gerges explained Shell’s identification for net zero. “Our approach to safety does not need to change, just need to mature” he noted.

For his part, Head of QHSES at IPR Energy Group, Hany Abdel Aziz, talked about his efforts in considering the hazards of petrochemical industries describing it as a critical industry. He said that his company updated systems according to the world standards. “According to that, we had to formulate vision and mission that help us go forward the strategy,” Abdel Aziz explained. He also emphasized that the importance of coordination with the government.

Additionally, Fawaz Bitar, Senior Vice President, HSE and Carbon at bp, highlighted the importance of enhancing the mindset and behaviour towards safety in order to be achieved within operations. “We drive behaviour and behaviour drives cultures,” Bitar explained. Also, he added that in order to change behaviours, trust should be built between the leadership and workforce.

Fatih Erdem, Compliance Officer and QHSSE Director at TANAP, talked about how his company faced the challenges of the pandemic and the lessons learned from that experience. Furthermore, Andre Erasmus MENAAP HSE SQ Region Manager of Halliburton, discussed how the company confronted the pandemic crises. He also elaborated how his company was caring about the employees affirming the crucial role of technology in this regard.

Companies Strategies for Energy Transition A fireside chat entitled “Leadership strategies to ensure oil and gas companies are well prepared for the energy transition” explored how companies include decarbonisation and net-wero emissions goals in their strategies, to what extent the companies are considering environmental, social and governance (ESGs) within their operation system and their outlook for oil and gas company business model in 2030.

The session was introduced by Jessica Jackson Apache’s Vice President, Environment, Health and Safety and moderated by Nada El Sawy Cairo Correspondent for The National. Jackson talked about how companies are adapting strategies to accelerate the transition to net zero. She said “we as industry were committed to continuing to produce oil and gas in environmentally and sustainable way.” She noted also that the companies are seeking to reduce emissions. Jackson insisted that the world needs to access to reliable and affordable energy. The vise president added also that “when we look at net-zero scenarios, it shows that there is a need for oil and gas in many decades to come even beyond 2030 and 2050.”

Environmental Sustainability In the same context, another panel discussion entitled “Environmental sustainability as the way towards a zero- carbon future” was held, tackling the strategies that the companies are adopting to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions with minimal or no effect on the bottom line.

For her part, Randa Mounir, Senior Climate Advisor at the British Embassy in Cairo, delivered clarification about sustainability. She said that we can replace it with “People, Planet and Profit”. “Sustainability is to take care about people’s health, to take care of planet and make a profit as well,” Mounir said. She saw that this requires countries to collaborate and introduce new technologies.

In the same context, Ghada Hammouda, Chief Sustainability & Marketing Officer, Qalaa Holdings, spoke about her company’s investments in energy sector and its role in supporting the goals of sustainability. She said that the private sector should not continue in the same way as they should be more responsible and think about the environment and carbon footprint.

For his part, James Fibbens, Vice President and Senior Project Manager at Bechtel, mentioned the challenges that may be faced when implementing energy transition projects. He said that the financing is the main challenge in addition to the viability and making these projects real and getting growing in the markets.

Another panel discussion was held under the title “Ensuring employees’ health and wellbeing within the entire oil and gas value chain” discussed the issue of mental health of the employees and how companies are dealing with the problem.

The awards were divided into four categories, addressing the oil and gas sector’s successful projects and leaders that aim at creating a better and safer future. The first category of the awards was for the Best Health Project of the Year. The winner was Hussein Marwan, Badr Petroleum Company (Bapetco). Meanwhile, Amir Weam, Baker Hughes, won the highly commended project award.

The Secretary General of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Mohammad Barkindo delivered a special speech demonstrating the long-standing service he generously bestowed upon the energy industry. Ahead of his retirement, Barkindo expressed his gratitude to El Molla in particular and to Egypt in general. “This is an opportunity to discuss what we have in common and Egypt is a wonderful country; you can move mountains from here,” he emphasised.
