atwonline.com UK lifts Cairo PED ban The United Kingdom has lifted its ban on in-cabin carriage of large personal electronic devices (PEDs) from Cairo International Airport to the UK. The UK followed the US in imposing a ban on large PEDs following intelligence that suggested terrorist organizations were attempting to smuggle an explosive device onto an aircraft inside devices such as laptop computers. The UK imposed the restriction on six Middle East nations— Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Turkey—in March 2017. Unlike the US, it did not impose restrictions on Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. EgyptAir said in a statement the ban had been lifted on its flights from Cairo to the UK on Sept. 1. ―The decision has been agreed on after UK transportation authorities … approved the safety and security measures applied to EgyptAir flights to London and made sure it is safe and proportionate to do so.‖ The ban on US-bound flights from Egypt was lifted in July. A spokesman for the UK Department for Transport said: ―We can confirm that, following a review of the changes introduced in March, and working with our international and industry partners to introduce tough additional security measures, the restrictions on electronic devices in the cabin on a number of UK-bound flights have now been lifted.

The consolidation, which follows regulation approved by Ethiopia's Council of Ministers on July 14 this year, sees the formation of a new holding group comprising EAE, Passenger Airline, Cargo Airline & Logistics Company, Ethiopian Aviation Academy, Ethiopian Inflight Catering Services, Ethiopian MRO Services and Ethiopian Hotel & Tourism Services. A statement issued by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's fastest growing carrier, said: "The holding company came on the scene with Ethiopian Airlines' 15year strategic plan dubbed 'Vision 2025'. The companies under Ethiopian Airlines have been preparing themselves to stand autonomously for the last seven years since the launch of the plan. "The regulation cites the merger will help the airline cope with the global aviation competitive market. The Enterprise has been running 23 airports: four are international, and some are under construction. In 2010, Ethiopian Airlines set out its Vision 2025 programme for future growth, supporting the country’s huge export of perishables by expanding the airline’s cargo fleet and infrastructure. The programme had a target of 725,000 tonnes of cargo handled by 2025, with the carrier achieving 270,000 tonnes in the 2015-16 financial year. The airline is also Africa's largest cargo aircraft operator with a freighter fleet of six Boeing 777Fs and two Boeing 757-200Fs. Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam said of the merger: "The primary objective of the merger is to make our airports’ services more effective and efficient so as to enable it provide global standard customer services with the aim of promoting competitiveness with international airports in the region.‖ In June this year, Ethiopian Airlines inaugurated its Cargo Terminal-II facility at home hub Addis Ababa. Covering a total area of 150,000 sq m the new facility includes a dry cargo terminal warehouse, a perishable cargo terminal with cool chain storage, fully automated with elevating transport vehicle (ETV) technology and an apron area for five additional large freighter aircraft. Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said that Egypt is ready to sign a protocol onaviation security with Moscow. VLADIVOSTOK (Sputnik) — Egypt has expressed its readiness to sign a protocol onaviation security with Russia, Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the Russian city of Vladivostok.
"It is necessary to sign an appropriate protocol [on aviation security] with the Egyptian side, and they have also expressed their readiness to do it, as well as to make changes to the presidential decree," Sokolov stressed. © AFP 2017/ KHALED DESOUKI The transport minister also pointed out that theoretically, there were prerequisites for the resumption of flights between Russia and Egypt this year, and that the question was being considered at the highest level. Regular or charter [flights] — it will depend on the interests of companies, both Russian and Egyptian," Sokolov told reporters.

Oman Air and Kenya Airways sign codeshare agreement Oman Air has implemented a codeshare agreement with Kenya Airways (KQ) covering services between Muscat and Nairobi effective August 28, 2017. The new partnership will allow seamless connectivity to Kenya Airways customers in accessing Muscat directly from Nairobi. Oman Air launched its flights to Nairobi in March this year. On the Nairobi – Muscat route, KQ will place its codeshare flight numbers on the Oman Air flights operating on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Paul Gregorowitsch, CEO of Oman Air, said, ―Trade between Kenya and Oman has been growing steadily over the years and this latest agreement with Kenya Airways is a natural progression, following the launch of our new flight from Muscat to Nairobi in March this year.‖ Sebastian Mikosz, Group managing director and CEO, Kenya Airways, commented, ―This new codeshare agreement represents an important element of our strategy to increase the choice, convenience and connectivity that Kenya Airways offers its customers.
