This was announced last Sunday by the firm’s CEO, Safwat Musallam, local press reported. The related contract will see the carrier acquire various types of aircrafts including 27 narrow-body aircrafts and 6 Jumbo Jets. According to Safwat Musallam, the planes which will mainly be long-haul aircrafts will enable Egypt link new destinations across various continents. Moreover, adding that the upcoming deal would be one of the most significant ever sealed by an airlines in the Middle east, Egyptair’s CEO said the fleet's expansion would continue until 2021-2021. It should be noted that in June 2017, Egyptair had nearly 70 different aircrafts. It also received the sixth new generation Boeing 737-800, out of nine it ordered from the US giant plane maker, Boeing, in 2016.

"We all know that 'once equipment is installed, it is reliable and economical to maintain for just over two years. But nonetheless, it is a fact that our engineers, who are tasked with providing the necessary maintenance tend to be complacent,” he said. Mthiyane stressed the issue of retraining to address this critical area of equipment maintenance, which has a huge impact on airspace safety. He is also the Africa region chair of the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO). In his welcoming address at the 2017 CANSO Africa Conference in Morocco Mthiyane said the global aviation body has taken note of the fact that Africa has fifty four states and that only a few have taken membership. “We need other states in Africa to join CANSO, and follow the example of our hosts, Morocco, who took a bold step and are now part of a collective, whose unwavering quest is to ensure safer skies,” said Mthiyane. RwandAir to host Africa airlines assembly | THE INDEPENDENT | Rwanda’s national flag carrier, RwandAir, has finalised preparations to host the 49th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Summit of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) this November. The three-day event from Nov.12 to 14 will be held in the prestigious Kigali Convention Centre in the capital Kigali. Up to 500 high profile delegates from the aviation industry in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America are expected to attend. The AFRAA AGA will be attended by Chairmen and CEOs from African airlines, ICAO, IATA, AFCAC, civil aviation authorities, airport companies, air navigation services providers as well as aircraft and engine manufacturers, component suppliers, and many other service providers. The AFRAA Secretary General, Elijah Chingosho, told journalists in Kigali on Sept.18 that the AGA will discuss issues on the development of air transport in Africa in general and development opportunities for African airlines in particular. “The AFRAA AGA is the premier gathering of senior global aviation executives in Africa. Ghana to host first ever African Air Show in October The first ever African Air Show will be hosted by Ghana from October 24 to 26, 2017, at the Kotoka International Airport, under the auspices of the Ministry of Aviation. The Expo, which is being organised in collaboration with the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), is the first of its kind in West Africa and is expected to establish Ghana as an aviation hub in the sub-region. Speaking at a press briefing on the African Air Show 2017, Ms. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister of Aviation, said it was important and in line with the Ministry’s vision to establish Ghana as an aviation hub and to organise events like the Air show, which will showcase the opportunities available in the sector, both in Ghana and Africa. The Air show will comprise two sessions; the exhibition and a conference and is expected to attract about 100 exhibitors, who have already registered, and an estimated 3,000 participants. The exhibitors include government departments, airport companies, airlines, flight school academies, ground handling services, military and defence, security agencies, cargo handling services, representatives of aircraft manufacturers, among others. “The main aim of the Exhibition and Conference is to actively engage major players within the African and global aviation space, with the view of positioning the African aviation industry at the forefront of regional and global interest,” she stated. It is also expected to provide a forum for stakeholders to interact with prospective investors in the development of Ghana and Africa’s aviation infrastructure and services and bring stakeholders up to speed with the dynamics of the industry by sharing experiences. http://ewn.co.za/ SOUTH AFRICA IN TALKS WITH CITIBANK ON STATE AIRLINE DEBT PRETORIA- South Africa is in talks with Citibank on how to settle a R1.8 billion loan to the state airline due to be repaid at the end of September, Treasury Director General Dondo Mogajane said on Tuesday. “We owe Citibank about R1.8 billion. We had an understanding with them to roll (the debt) to September. Citi did indicate to us that they will not be in a position to roll further and we engaged them. It’s an ongoing consultation,” Mogajane told journalists at a news conference. Citibank South Africa’s spokesperson was not immediately available for comment. Mogajane said in total the airline had R6.9 billion of debt maturing at the end of September. “We are engaging the lenders, so as much as R6.9 billion is due on paper it might just be that we don’t have to pay the R6.9 billion, consultations continue,” Mogajane said. State-owned South African Airways (SAA) was in July provided with state funds to help it repay loans of about R2.3 billion to Standard Chartered. SAA already relies on government guarantees to support its finances. Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, speaking at the same news conference, denied there was a plan to tap the government pension fund to bail out SAA. SAA has been highlighted by all three major rating agencies as one of the problems facing South Africa’s economy. The Treasury is under pressure to keep recent pledges to cut spending and reform governance at state firms to fend off credit downgrades deeper into “junk”.
