Ryanair may have to pay compensation over cancelled flights, says watchdog The Commission for Aviation Regulation has said Ryanair will have to pay compensation to passengers whose flights have been cancelled with less than two weeks’ notice. A spokesperson said it is likely the airline may have to pay out hefty sums in compensation because of its decision to cancel 40-50 flights per day over the next six weeks. The airline has so far given people notice of sometimes just hours and at most five days. Eight Irish flights were cancelled for today, all of which were to or from Dublin Airport. The flights cancelled were between Dublin and four destinations – Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Nantes and Santander. The airline has said it is emailing all passengers whose flights are cancelled and has informed anyone booked to travel on dates up to and including Wednesday. Ryanair said they will issue the next set of cancellations tomorrow.

The deal calls for Boeing to supply eight 787-9 Dreamliners, converting eight of Malaysia Airlines' existing order for Boeing 737 MAX jets, and eight additional purchase rights for 737 MAX 8s. In addition, Malaysia Air will enroll in Boeing's Global Fleet Care service, to maintain its current and future Boeing aircraft. Reportedly, the first deliveries for the new aircraft will begin in May 2019. "The 787 and the 737 MAX will provide Malaysia Airlines with unmatched fuel efficiency, economics, and a superior passenger experience as they continue to grow their business across Southeast Asia and beyond," stated Kevin McAllister, president and CEO. Currently Malaysia Airlines operates over 50 Next-Generation 737s. It has firm orders in place for 25 more 737 MAXs, plus 10 of the new 737 MAX 10 aircraft. The 787 Boeing’s primary wide-body aircraft, for intercontinental routes. The 737 MAX is the latest version of Boeing’s narrow-body platform, and the forthcoming 737 MAX 10 is predicted to be ―the most profitable single-aisle airplane, offering the lowest seat costs ever.‖ The Global Fleet Care is a customized service that provides engineering, materials, and maintenance programs to aircraft operators, drawing on fleet-data management resources, Boeing technologies, and proprietary analytics and processes. ―New wide-body aircraft are a key to making Malaysia Airlines a premium airline offering a 'five-star' product again,‖ commented Peter Bellew, managing director and CEO. http://atwonline.com British Airways tries again on waste-based biofuels UK carrier British Airways (BA) has partnered with renewable fuels company Velocys, after an earlier waste-to-fuel initiative— named GreenSky—with Washington-based Solena Fuels fell through. This latest venture uses fuel derived from waste biomass, similar to the GreenSky project that BA signed up to with Solena in 2010. Under that earlier project, BA was planning to power its London City flights using biofuels from a new facility in east London, which was scheduled to start production in 2017. However, the Solena project never materialized because of mixed government support, cautious investor appetite and low crude oil prices. In 2015, at the Airport Operators Association (AOA) annual conference, IAG CEO Willie Walsh said he was talking to a number of other sustainable fuel suppliers after Solena struggled to make progress. ―It has been frustrating for various reasons, mainly external, but I am still optimistic that we will see sustainable biofuel,‖ he said at the time. Commenting on the new Velocys partnership, a BA spokesman told ATW this venture is more likely to succeed because Velocys is already producing waste-based biofuels in the US. ―This project has the same basic claim as GreenSky, but there are a number of basic differences. Velocys has a track record of successful projects and they run a plant in the US that’s already functioning. The technology is already proven and we believe the market environment has improved since our previous experience,‖ the BA spokesman said.
