Turkey coup: British Airways cancels ALL flights after bloody power struggle Flights to and from Turkey have been cancelled after at least 161 people were killed in a bloody attempted military coup.

British Airways said it has cancelled all flights to and from the country following a night of gunfire and explosions in capital Ankara and Istanbul.

It comes after the Foreign Office advices Britons to “stay indoors” after at least 161 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in clashes.

More than 1,500 soldiers were arrested as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the coup as an “act of treason” and insisted his government remained in charge.

A British Airways spokeswoman said: "In light of the events unfolding in Turkey, all flights to and from the country have been cancelled today (July 16).

EgyptAir and Boeing announced an order for nine Next-Generation 737800s at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow. The deal is valued at USD 864 million at current list prices.

FAA Bans Turkish Airlines From Flying to the United States No airlines may fly from Turkey to the United States due to a Federal Aviation Administration order, U.S. government officials said Saturday.

“All airline carriers, regardless of country of registry, are prohibited from flying into the United States from Turkey either directly or via third country,” the U.S. Embassy in Ankara said.

In a message on its website, the Embassy warned travelers that “security at [Istanbul’s] Ataturk airport is significantly diminished.” It is, however, is open, and Turkish Airlines, the main carrier there, said Saturday that “the airport is now back to normal and flights have begun.”

The FAA has also banned any U.S. registered aircraft from flying into Turkey but that’s less of an issue for most people, as Delta, the last U.S. carrier that considered flying to Istanbul, recently suspended the service it had planned to start in May. The FAA’s ban also includes private aircraft, and that may affect some travelers.

The FAA did not say how long its ban would last.

“The FAA is monitoring the situation in Turkey in coordination with our partners in the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security and will update the restrictions as the situation evolves,” the FAA said in a statement.

The FAA’s decision is likely a bigger problem for Turkish Airlines, the global behemoth that had made U.S. flights a key part of its strategy.

Like Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways, Turkish tries to capitalize on its unique location to sell Americans one-stop itineraries to hard-to-reach places, especially in Africa, the Middle East and India.

Turkish flies nonstop to Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, Washington Dulles and Chicago.

On social media, passengers posted pictures of chaos at the airport, as hundreds tried to speak with airline employees.

The airline, however, said it was doing what it could. It released a statement asking passengers to go to special airline counters it was setting up in nearby hotels.

Istanbul's airport reopens, flights resume Turkish Airlines has resumed flights from Istanbul's international airport, following a failed coup attempt while some foreign carriers cancelled weekend flights.

Forces loyal to Turkey's government fought on Saturday to crush the last remnants of a military coup attempt. Television images late Friday had shown tanks parked in front of the airport.

A spokesman for Turkish Airlines said flights had now returned to their normal schedule from Europe's third largest hub, though delays were to be expected.

Turkish budget carrier Pegasus said its flights were also experiencing minor delays.

The closure of Istanbul's Ataturk Airport late on Friday had caused the diversion of 35 airplanes and cancelled 32 flights, Turkish Airlines chairman Ilker Ayci told broadcaster CNN Turk.

British Airways said in a statement it was halting all flights to Turkey on Saturday and one on Sunday as a precaution.

EasyJet said its advice from British authorities was to continue flying, although it was monitoring developments.

The attempted coup follows a series of bombings that hit Turkey this year, including a suicide attack in June that killed 45 people at Istanbul's main airport.

They have weighed on international travel to the country.

The number of foreign visitors to Turkey fell by 28 per cent in April, data showed on Friday, the biggest drop in 17 years.

The decline signals more pain for Turkey's economy, which is smarting from slowing exports and weak investment. Some economists have forecast that tourism revenue will drop by a quarter this year, costing around $US8 billion ($A10.48 billion).

German airline Lufthansa cancelled all its flights to Istanbul and Ankara on Saturday and pared back the number flights to holiday destinations Bodrum and Antalya.

Russia also suspended passenger flights to the country on the orders of President Vladimir Putin, TASS news agency said.

Turkish and Russian officials had met this week to discuss the restarting of charter flights between the two countries and tourism security after relations soured following Turkey's downing of a Russian jet last year.

State airline EgyptAir also cancelled all flights on Saturday to Istanbul, the company said in a statement. The company, which has 14 flights to Istanbul per week, did not say when they were expected to resume.
