Unseen retro photos of London City Airport released to mark the start of the 30th anniversary year 30 images have been published, including 5 unseen pictures by longstanding air traffic engineer Vic Abbott showing how the airport and surrounding skyline has changed Royal visits to the airport feature in the selection including Prince Charles in 1986, The Queen in 1987 and Diana Princess of Wales in 1992 Airport archive reveals 1997 remark from Duke of Edinburgh that he found London City ―wonderfully convenient‖ and was able to arrive in just 19 minutes from Buckingham Palace 30th anniversary year commences following record-breaking 4.5 million passengers in 2016 - from 15,000 passengers in 1987 A 30th anniversary timeline of the airport‘s history London City Airport has released several images dating back to the early 1980s to mark the start of its 30th anniversary year in 2017. The airport, conveniently located less than 6 miles from the City of London, was officially opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth II on 5 November 1987. The photographs published today are from the London City Airport archive and the personal collections of longstanding staff members, including Vic Abbott, a NATS air traffic engineer who has been at the airport since it opened and documented its early days.

(2) The wider selection includes fascinating shots of Prince Charles laying the foundation stone in 1986, the opening by The Queen in 1987, and the completed airport during the late eighties and early nineties, as well as the former site in London‘s Royal Docks, which was transformed during the mid-eighties to become the home of the international airport. Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport, said: ―2017 is going to be a significant year for London City Airport, as we prepare to reach the tremendous 30th anniversary milestone in the autumn. Since the airport opened in 1987 it has undergone a remarkable evolution, continuing to attract primarily business travellers thanks to our close proximity to central London and a customer experience defined by speedy check-in and arrival times. ―Collectively over 30 years we‘ve enabled nearly 53 million passenger journeys, remained the only London airport actually in London, and become one of the largest employers in the London Borough of Newham. I look forward with anticipation to the next chapter, which includes a £344 million development, construction for which begins later this anniversary year.‖

(3) London City Airport initially operated routes to Paris, Plymouth, Brussels and Amsterdam, welcoming 8,235 passengers in its first full month of operation. Today the airport serves nearly 50 destinations and in 2016 welcomed a record-breaking 4.5 million passengers over the course of the year. The concept for an airport in London‘s Docklands was conceived in 1981 by Reg Ward, the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) Chief Executive and Sir Philip Beck, Chairman of John Mowlem & Co plc, the major construction company, and took just 18 months to construct between spring 1986 and October 1987. Photographs published today include the test flight landing of a De Haviland Dash-7 aircraft on the derelict Heron Quay (now part of the Canary Wharf development) in June 1982, which helped prove the premise for an airport in London‘s Docklands. In one particularly striking shot from 1992, by Vic Abbott, a British Aerospace 146 aircraft is seen approaching London City Airport from the west, with One Canada Square in Canary Wharf – then the tallest building in the UK – completely isolated with none of today‘s recognisable London buildings on the skyline. The airport‘s 30th anniversary year will crescendo towards celebrations of the official milestone in the autumn. As part of preparations for the 2017 anniversary, a special pamphlet from the 10th anniversary in 1997 was rediscovered which demonstrated the airport had royal approval. In a foreword from HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he wrote: ―The Queen opened London City Airport 10 years ago and I can only imagine that the developers must have held their breath as they waited to see whether this somewhat unconventional airport was going to be a success. I think it was a brilliant idea, but then I found it to be wonderfully convenient. I once made it in 19 minutes from Buckingham Palace.‖

(4) The 30th anniversary year in 2017 will also see the start of the £344 million City Airport Development Programme, comprising 7 new aircraft stands, a parallel taxiway and an extended passenger terminal, with completion expected by 2025. A commemorative 30th anniversary book is also being written by Malcolm Ginsberg, to be published later in the year

BA flights are axed as cabin crew strike – and now you can‘t get a free G&T! Airline starts charging for drinks on board as one disgruntled passenger describes carrier as the 'Fawlty Towers of the sky' British Airways short-haul passengers found flights disrupted by a strike yesterday – and then faced a £6 charge for a gin and tonic to calm their nerves once they were on board. Cabin crew were completing a 48-hour walkout over pay, leading to flights being cancelled on the day BA scrapped complimentary snacks and drinks in a switch to no-frills flying. Economy class passengers must now pay £1.80 for a bottle of water or soft drink, £1 for crisps, £2.30 for tea or coffee, £4 for a beer and £4.50 for wine. Spirits cost £4.50, with mixers an extra £1.50. Bacon rolls, part of a new range of M&S On Board food, cost £4.75. Passengers were critical of the new charges. Some declined to pay for food and drink that had traditionally been complimentary while others complained they did not get served. William McGill, 76, who flew from Edinburgh to Heathrow, said: ‗It is only an hour and a half, I am not going to pay for it. They should have kept their free drinks – just as a goodwill gesture.‘ Scottish comedian Fred MacAulay, 60, a regular on Radio 4‘s The News Quiz, said the charges were ‗another chip away‘ at the service provided by BA – and the trolley did not get as far as him, as crew were occupied taking payments from passengers who were served. Swiss financier Heini Beretta said only half the passengers on his flight from Heathrow to Zurich were served, tweeting: ‗BA becomes Fawlty Towers of the sky.‘

(2) A BA spokesman said last night: ‗We‘ve had some small teething issues on a tiny number of flights. The introduction of M&S On Board is an incredibly complex change to our operation, so we‘re pleased with how the roll-out has gone.‘ The paid-for service has been introduced on short-haul and domestic flights, 90 per cent of which last three hours or less, from Heathrow and Gatwick. It will be introduced on similar flights from London City and Stansted by summer. Business class customers will continue to be offered a full, complimentary menu. BA was forced to cancel 48 flights out of around 1,600 to and from Heathrow during the 48-hour strike which ended last night. The airline said customers were put on alternative flights. The strike over staffing and pay was called by the Unite union, which represents about one in six of BA‘s cabin crew. It involved ‗mixed fleet‘ attendants – those who fly both short and long haul – who joined BA since 2010. Referring to the airline‘s new On Board food range, Unite claimed its 2,900 striking members could barely afford to buy M&S food on their ‗poverty pay‘ and would be better off working in the store rather than serving its food at 36,000ft. Unite national officer Oliver Richardson said: ‗We would urge M&S to do the right thing and tell British Airways to follow its lead and pay mixed fleet cabin crew a fair and proper living wage.‘ Marks & Spencer confirmed it had received a letter from Unite yesterday but added: ‗It‘s not something we are going to comment on. It‘s a matter for BA.‘ BA disputes the union‘s claims and says new cabin crew working fulltime receive more than £21,000 in wages, allowances, incentive payments and bonuses in their first year.

Strong Demand Growth Returns in November Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic results for November 2016 showing the strongest demand growth in nine months. Total revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) rose 7.6% compared to November 2015. Capacity (available seat kilometers or ASKs) increased by 6.5%, and load factor rose 0.8 percentage points to 78.9%. ―Stronger demand for air travel reflects—and is supporting--a pick-up in the global economic cycle. As the stimulus effect of lower oil prices recedes in the rear view mirror, the strength of the economic cycle will play a key role in the pace of demand growth in 2017,‖ said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA‘s Director General and CEO. nternational Passenger Markets November international passenger demand rose 8.0% compared to the year earlier, with airlines in all regions showing growth. Total capacity climbed 6.8%, and load factor edged up 0.9 percentage points to 77.1%. European Carriers saw demand increase by 8.3% in November 2016, while traffic grew at an annualized pace of 12% over the past five months or so. This suggests that the disruption caused by terrorism and political instability has lifted, against a backdrop of a growing Eurozone economy. Capacity rose 6.8% and load factor climbed 1.1 percentage point to 80.8%. Asia-Pacific airlines‘ November traffic also climbed 8.3% compared to the year-ago period. Capacity increased 7.1% and load factor rose 0.8 percentage points to 77.4%. The strong upward trend in demand has slowed recently but it is not clear whether this is a longer-term development or just a brief pause. Middle East carriers led all regions with a 12.2% demand increase. But the upward trend in the region‘s seasonally adjusted traffic has paused, with November‘s level coming in unchanged from that of July. Capacity rose 11.6% and load factor rose 0.3 percentage points to 68.7%.
صورة أرشٌفٌة
(2) North American airlines‘ traffic climbed 1.5% in November. Traffic across the Pacific is growing rapidly but North Atlantic demand is moderating. Capacity rose 1.2% and load factor edged up 0.2 percentage points to 78.7%. Latin American airlines saw November traffic climb 7.3% compared to November 2015. Capacity increased by just 2.9%, pushing load factor up 3.4 percentage points to 82.2%. The upward trend in international traffic has remained strong despite difficult conditions on the North AmericaSouth America route, supported by healthy international demand within South America. African airlines experienced an 8.2% rise in demand compared to November 2015. Economic conditions in much of Africa remain challenging, particularly in the biggest economies of Nigeria and South Africa, but the upward trend in seasonally-adjusted passenger traffic has reasserted itself more recently, supported by strong demand on routes to and from Asia and the Middle East. Capacity rose 5.1% and load factor climbed 1.9 percentage points to 66.3%. Domestic Passenger Markets Domestic travel demand rose 7.1% in November 2016 compared to the same month in 2015, but results continued to vary widely, with China, India and Russia showing double-digit growth while demand declined in Brazil and Japan. Domestic capacity climbed 6.1%, and load factor improved 0.8 percentage points to 82.2% (1) % of industry RPKs in 2015 (2) Year-on-year change in load factor (3) Load factor level; (4) Note: the seven domestic passenger markets for which broken-down data are available account for 30% of global total RPKs and approximately 82% of total domestic RPKs Air travel in Japan declined 0.5% in November. Traffic has trended sideways in seasonally-adjusted terms for the best part of two years, against a backdrop of weak momentum in con1.6%sumer spending. Russia‘s 15.5% increase largely reflects favorable comparisons with the year-earlier period following the collapse of Transaero in autumn 2015. But the recovery in seasonally-adjusted domestic traffic is continuing, alongside signs that the country‘s economic recession is easing.

(3) The Bottom Line ―The airline industry continues to deliver strong results. In 2017, for a third consecutive year, the industry‘s return on invested capital will exceed the cost of capital. Passengers benefit from the industry‘s success. Travel has never been more accessible—with great fares, many options and more destinations. Nevertheless uncertainty lies ahead. The threat of terrorism, questions over the durability of the economic upswing, rising oil prices and increasing protectionist rhetoric are among the concerns. The industry has reshaped itself and strengthened its resilience to shocks. We should see another solid year of collective profitability for the airlines in 2017. But we must be vigilant,‖ said de Juniac.

FAA Relaxes Medical Standards For General Aviation Pilots The Federal Aviation Administration today announced final rules making it easier for private pilots to meet medical requirements. The changes announced today are effective May 1 and will provide pilots an alternative to meeting the current medical licensing requirements if they meet each of the following requirements: Possess a valid driver‘s license; Have held a medical certificate at any time after July 15, 2006; Have not had the most recently held medical certificate revoked, suspended, or withdrawn; Have not had the most recent application for airman medical certification completed and denied; Have taken a medical education course within the past 24 calendar months; Have completed a comprehensive medical examination within the past 48 months; Be under the care of a physician for certain medical conditions; Have been found eligible for special issuance of a medical certificate for certain specified mental health, neurological, or cardiovascular conditions; Consent to a National Driver Register check; Fly only certain small aircraft, at a limited altitude and speed, and only within the United States; Not fly for compensation or hire. The FAA issued the rules as final rules without public comment because the rules directly implement Congressional requirements passed in the FAA‘s last reauthorization bill and signed by President Obama this past July. General aviation pilots have been clamoring for medical reform for years saying that the traditional medical licensing requirements were expensive and time-consuming – because they required examination by a special FAA-approved doctor – and did not improve safety. This change in medical requirements will make it easier for private pilots to fly and, because of the educational requirements and operational restrictions, I do not foresee a negative impact on aviation safety.

(1) Ryanair overtakes Lufthansa as Europe's largest airline Frankfurt - Ryanair has overtaken Lufthansa to become Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, figures on Tuesday, 10 January, showed, allowing the Irish budget carrier to snatch the crown from the German rival for the first time. The Lufthansa group - which includes Austrian Airlines, Swiss, and low-cost Eurowings - said in a statement it had carried a record 109.7 million passengers in 2016, up 1.8% on the year before. ALSO SEE: Lufthansa and Etihad join forces in new codeshare But it was not enough to beat Ryanair, which last week announced a 15% jump in passenger numbers to 117 million. While the German flag carrier remains ahead of its no-frills competitor in terms of revenue, "these numbers show that passengers are increasingly tempted by Ryanair's offer," Hamburg-based aviation expert Cord Schellenberg told AFP. "This should be a wake-up call for Lufthansa," he added. A Lufthansa spokesman however downplayed the significance of being relegated to second place by passenger numbers, saying it was "just one figure among many".

(2) "We want to grow in a profitable way," he told AFP. But the battle for dominance in the skies is far from over. Faced with stiff competition from low-cost carriers like Ryanair and EasyJet, Lufthansa has set out to strengthen its own budget subsidiary, Eurowings. It reached a deal late last year to lease 33 aircraft from struggling Air Berlin that will be operated by Eurowings. And last month Lufthansa announced it was taking full control of Brussels Airlines, which is set to be incorporated into Eurowings. "Together, this should bring us another 11 to 12 million passengers annually," the Lufthansa spokesman said. SEE: Cape Town International Airport hits 10 million passenger milestone in 2016 Ryanair for its part is keeping up the pressure, notably by adding new routes and bases in France, Germany and eastern Europe. The Irish airline has particularly rattled Lufthansa with its plans to start flying from Frankfurt airport this year - Lufthansa's home base. "Ryanair will continue to improve the customer experience, and fares will continue to fall," spokesman Ronan O'Keeffe told AFP, adding that the group had set itself the goal of transporting "over 200 million customers a year" by 2024.
