TRAVEL

How to Buy Discounted Flight Tickets by: George Alarcon Everyone who travels wants to save as much as possible when flying. Why would you want to pay the regular going cost when you can get flight tickets cheaper? I have provided a few clever ways of saving yourself a ton of money on your next air trip. 1) Book online instead of offline; you’ll save money from the paper

processing fee. 2) Clear out your cookies. Why? Many travel websites use the cookies to log when you search for a particular route and will quote you higher when you return to that site to search again. 3) Many airline websites update their airfare shortly after midnight. A little research about the route you are looking will help you get the best airfares before they are sold.

4) Stay less than 30 days. Most airfare tariffs have a month’s limitation stay restriction. If you require more time, you will pay a higher priced ticket. 5) If you are traveling with a child under 2 year of age, your child is qualified to travel for free. Buying a separate seat for your child is really expensive. 6) Be ready and open to have

different departure and return dates. Mark “anytime” in the search window. 7) Buy flight tickets during the off-season periods; flight tickets are usually cheaper. 8) Buy flight tickets in advance; you can save a lot. 9) Buy from an air courier service; these are companies that will buy your luggage space in exchange for lower-priced tickets. 10) If you fly a lot, join a frequent flyer program; such a program offers long-term discounts.

OHIO

Simply perfect Ohio is home to the world’s largest population of Amish people. Most live in the northeastern counties of Holmes, Wayne, Tuscarawas, Geauga and Trumbull. You’ll know when you’ve arrived in Amish Country. You’ll see men dressed in black, wearing suspenders and broad-brimmed hats; women in dark-colored bonnets; buggy-pulling horses;

immaculate farmhouses, and fields where corn shocks stand in the autumn sunshine. The true beauty of the Amish people comes from their back-to-basics lifestyle. They have allowed themselves and their visitors to enjoy the simple pleasures of a warm home-cooked meal, an expertly crafted tool or a carefully tended farm. You will find

hand-picked produce sold from the back of an Amish buggy. Restaurants serve family-style dinners. General stores show why the Amish are famous for their fine, handmade furnishings and crafts. To best learn the lay of the land, try the Buggy Trail Tour, which departs from Berlin. The Ohio Central Railroad in Sugarcreek provides hour long rail excursions May through October.

Amish home life is displayed at Yoder’s in Walnut Creek. Here two houses on 100 acres of farmland serve as a working farm. At Schrock’s Amish Farm in Berlin, visitors can tour the area on short buggy rides and shop for handmade Amish goods. The Amish have made some concessions to modern-day America. For example, the Millersburg

MARYLAND

A Wealth of Possibilities Maryland offers a wealth of possibilities, depending on your interests. Here are just a few… Isn’t It Romantic? The answer is yes, no matter where you go. Snuggle up in front of a roaring fire in your mountain cabin, or wake to the sound of seagulls after spending the night in a romantic retreat at Maryland’s beach resort, Ocean City. Pack a perfect picnic and set out for the beautiful views provided by green pastures or cloud-topped mountains, or hop aboard a historic sailboat and enjoy a sunset cruise for two. Go Outside and Play. How many times did your parents tell you to “go outside and play?” Here in Maryland, we also urge you to get outdoors to experience some of Maryland’s natural wonders. Step into a sea

kayak and paddle through the marsh grasses of the lower Chesapeake Bay. Hop on a mountain bike and pedal through pristine forest trails in Western Maryland. Cast a line for blue marlin, brook trout, smallmouth bass or striped bass (known as “rockfish” to the locals) in bodies of water all around the state. Pitch a tent, climb a rock, hunt for fossils or prowl for owls on a night hike. We promise great adventures in our great outdoors. Retreat to a bygone era on Maryland’s Civil War Trails. Brother fought brother in the cornfields around Sharpsburg, a battle that afterwards turned whole towns into makeshift hospitals. Armies clad in blue and gray skirmished through Maryland’s countryside on their way

to an epic battle at Gettysburg. A wounded assassin escaped Washington, D.C. into the Southern Maryland countryside in search of a doctor named Mudd. The Civil War soldiers, spies and villains didn’t have signposts to point the way, but today’s visitors can follow colorful bugle “trailblazer” signs of Maryland’s Civil War Trails. The bugles lead to waysides where interpretive markers tell both military and anecdotal accounts of war and its effects on the people of Maryland. This article courtesy of Maryland Office of Tourism. www.visitmaryland.org.

Discover Cecil County, Maryland Cecil County offers small town history and beautiful countryside. Shimmering harbors border its 5 rivers, the C&D Canal and Chesapeake Bay. Experience farm destinations such as wineries, orchards, pick-your-own farms, and a dairy farm with homemade ice cream. Visit C&D Canal Museum or Mt Harmon - a tobacco plantation with a breathtaking view. Enjoy Plumpton Park Zoo, Upper Bay Museum, Sinking Springs Herb Farm, or Hollywood Casino. Historic S. Chesapeake City has picturesque 19th Century homes, built along the banks of C&D canal. Ships and pleasure vessels from around the globe slip through the canal and beneath the town’s majestic bridge. Become a Fan of Pennsylvania From a scenic overlook at one of the nation’s tallest and longest bridges to entertainment complexes and a festival for Jeep lovers, there are attractions for every taste throughout Pennsylvania. The Kinzua Bridge, once the world’s highest and longest railroad viaduct, became a scenic pedestrian walkway in mid-2011. It was first built in 1882, but 11 of its 20 towers were toppled by a tornado in 2003. Visitors are now able to walk on part of the bridge and view the Kinzua Gorge from a height of more than 300 feet. The bridge is located in Kinzua Bridge State Park, located in the popular PA Wilds region. The PA Wilds is known for its unsurpassed natural beauty and charming towns awash in history, and also features the largest elk herd in the Northeast. Learn more at www.pawilds.com. The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival is revving things up for the fourth annual event celebrating Butler, Pa. as the birthplace of the

father of all Jeeps. The Festival will jump start everyone’s summer with a family-friendly event when it’s held June 13-15, 2014, Father’s Day weekend at Coopers Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, offering Jeep owners challenging trails and a full-service campground. Go online to learn more at www.bantamjeepfestival.com. The ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks in Bethlehem is a 65,000-square-foot, multi-use performing arts center, which features live music, independent and scientific films, festivals and community celebrations year-round. ArtsQuest is a product of the organizers of Musicfest, Christkindlmarkt and PeepFest. Check out all there is to do there by clicking www.artsquest.org. A former silk mill in Columbia, Lancaster County, became a destination for fans of Turkey Hill Dairy’s frozen desserts and drinks. The Turkey Hill Experience

interactive center highlights the ice cream making process, the history of the dairy, the Lancaster County region and its unique heritage and culture. Plan for your experience at www.turkeyhillexperience.com. The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia features exhibits, rare artifacts and interactive displays that tell the story of American Jews through every phase of the nation’s history. This addition to Independence Mall features a striking glass façade and its 100,000-square-foot museum offers three floors of core exhibition space, a floor of changing exhibits, and the Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame, which illustrates the extraordinary accomplishments of

American Jews. A number of resources are available, as well, at the museum’s website: www.nmajh.org. The Erie Art Museum is housed in a LEED-certified space that combines 10,500 square feet of new construction with 15,000 square feet of renovated space in downtown Erie. The addition connects five historic buildings, triples gallery space and allows the museum’s entire permanent collection of more than 6,000 objects to be on display; some for the first time. Visit www.erieartmuseum.org to see the new space and what is on display for art lovers. Debuted in Philadelphia in 2010 was the Lights of Liberty show, the first nighttime outdoor show in

historic Philadelphia that included 3-D technology. Guests watched as 21st century innovations turned some of the city’s most historic buildings into a spectacularly lit recreation of 18th century Philadelphia. Lights of Liberty is an initiative of Historic Philadelphia Inc., www.historicphiladelphia.org. SOUTH CAROLINA

South Carolina coast features 200 miles of sun and surf A mix of easy public access, private retreats and natural preserves highlights the 200 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline that South Carolina calls its own. For generations, beach trips to millions of Americans and Canadians has meant an easy drive to Myrtle Beach and later, Hilton Head, while expanded air travel has added more

the Strand offers both bustling and less-boisterous choices for plopping that plastic chaise lounge and propping the umbrella. In Myrtle Beach proper, hotels old and new, restaurants and shops line the beach, with public access points interspersed. Then there are the quiet ocean-side beach communities such as Cherry Grove, Atlantic Beach (considered perhaps the nation’s first predominantly African American beach town), Garden City and “elegantly shabby” Pawleys Island. Each offers varying degrees of public beach access and wide choices of hotel, cottage and condo rentals, as well as package deals with many of the more than 100 golf courses on the Strand. Cozy Myrtle Beach and expansive Huntington Beach state parks also offer beach access, camping, environmental education programs and more. Much of the coast is protected wildlife refuges until the Charleston area, itself a world-class destination for lovers of history and architecture but also home to popular beach destinations such as Wild Dunes Resort and the Isle of Palms to the north of town and Folly Beach and its popular public beach just to the south. Next up going south is storied Edisto Island. Live oaks draped with Spanish moss overhang the narrow highway across the big island to Edisto Beach, long beloved for its great shelling. The park also has a robust environmental education center, camping and cabins. Then there’s the Beaufort area. The big park has four miles of beach, cabins and thousands of acres of

maritime forest and marsh for exploring. It even has a historic, 100-foot lighthouse. At the south end of South Carolina’s coast is Hilton Head, a golf and tennis haven.
