South Carolina's Hammock Coast®

Underneath sorbet-colored skies, you'll find the quiet beach communities of South Carolina’s Hammock Coast: Pawleys Island, Litchfield Beach, Murrells Inlet, DeBordieu Colony and southern Garden City.

On the Hammock Coast are spacious beaches and pristine salt marshes, offering chances to soak up the sun, spirit away on a kayak or even catch fish and blue crabs for dinner. Perfectly situated between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, the Hammock Coast is serviced by two major airports.

Pawleys Island, one of America’s oldest seaside resorts, has been named one of the best beaches in the world. As the birthplace of the rope hammock, relaxation has a long history here. (And gave inspiration to the region’s moniker as the “Hammock Coast.”) Litchfield Beach, just north of Pawleys, earned TripAdvisor's designation as one of the Top 10 beaches in America! Murrells Inlet, known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina,” was originally a fishing village on a

protected inlet. The southern portion of Garden City overlooks Murrells Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean, offering stunning views in every direction. And DeBordieu Colony offers a stunning beach near historic Georgetown, where history comes alive at five museums.

Between the business districts of Murrells Inlet and Litchfield are two of the Hammock Coast’s most famous attractions –Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park. Recognized as one of the top birding spots on the East Coast, the state park offers camping and access to an undeveloped beach. Just across Ocean Highway is Brookgreen Gardens, a 9,127-acre botanical and sculpture garden that has drawn visitors since 1931.

Dotting the Hammock Coast are also several award-winning golf courses, many built on former rice plantations that provide a graciously Southern golf experience. Three of Golf Magazine's “Top 100 You Can Play” are here, in fact.

Winter Hiking and Wildlife Viewing Opportunities Abound in Kentucky

If winter weather brings cabin fever, that’s the time to get outdoors in Kentucky. In many ways, winter is the best season for enjoying the wild side in the Bluegrass State, as summer humidity and high-season crowds give way to crisp air and fewer adventurers on the trails.

Winter’s leafless trees reveal stunning Kentucky vistas, whether in the eastern mountains or the western lakes regions. Birds and

other wildlife are more easily spotted in winter, providing an extra bonus to hikers who venture out this time of year. Great spots for winter vistas include Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in the Appalachian region and Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in southwestern Kentucky.

Popular places for winter hiking near Louisville include Bernheim

Arboretum and Research Forest and Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area, whose trails afford impressive views of the Ohio River.

Many of Kentucky’s 45 state parks feature hiking trails that are great places to get close to nature during winter. Make the excursion a cozy winter weekend at 17 state resort parks that offer lodge accommodations. At resort parks including Carter Caves, Barren River Lake, Pennyrile Forest and Lake Cumberland, you can even settle into cottages with wood-burning fireplaces after a full day on the trails.

Organized hikes are an enjoyable way to share your winter hiking experience with likeminded adventurers. For example, a weekend hiking adventure offered at Pine Mountain State Resort Park encompassed eight miles on three guided hikes in one weekend. Hikers gazed out across the Cumberland

Mountains from Knobby Rock in the midst of the celebrated Blanton Forest; stood on the mountain peak where Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia adjoin; and felt the weight of history in the saddle of the Cumberland Gap Pass. They investigated a Native American camp in a sandstone rockhouse, relived the folk history of the legendary Chained Rock and examined a natural arch on the vaulted south slope of Pine Mountain. Contact the park to see if the trip is available in 2022-23.

Elk and bison also roam freely in the Elk and Bison Prairie, a 700 acre portion of Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area in southwestern Kentucky. Deer, wild turkey and numerous other wildlife species thrive in the prairie, which can be enjoyed via a 3.5 mile loop road.

Bald eagles also are a great attraction during winter in the lakes

region of southwestern Kentucky, where their numbers swell to 150 or more as they migrate south from the Great Lakes and southern Canada. The Kentucky State Parks system has offered Eagle Watch Weekends for more than 40 years.

Four parks – Kentucky Dam Village, Lake Barkley, Kenlake and Dale Hollow – have provided guided eagle tours via boat or van in January and February. Contact these parks to check offerings or to participate in one of these tours.

Sandhill cranes are another transient species making a stop in Kentucky on winter migration to states further south. Adult sandhill cranes may be more than four feet tall with a red forehead, white cheeks and a long pointed bill. Their wingspan extends six to eight feet.

One of the best places to view these birds is Barren River State Resort Park in south central Kentucky. See these birds on weekend trips in January and February organized by park naturalists. More information on the trips is available by calling 270-646-2151.

Birders who wish to view many less exotic species can pursue this hobby at state parks throughout Kentucky. So don’t sit at home this winter. Grab your camera and binoculars and discover the diverse wildlife of Kentucky.
