WASHINGTON FEDERAL IS ONE OF THE NATION’S STRONGEST BANKS. WITHIN ARIZONA, IT BOASTS $1.4 BILLION IN DEPOSITS AT ITS 31 BRANCHES. But over the past several years, even after winning the Money Magazine’s “Best Bank” in the state, Washington Federal in Arizona still got the same questions over and over. Some of Arizona regional president Mike Brown’s favorites are: • Is Washington Federal part of the federal government?

• Washington Federal is a credit union headquartered in DC, right?

• Is Washington Federal a prison?

“We got the message. People who don’t know us yet might not be able to tell what we do. We needed to address that challenge while making sure our bank would be clearly recognizable in all of our markets,” says Brown.

WASHINGTON FEDERAL TO WAFD BANK As such, according to Brown, Washington Federal adopted its longtime nickname, WaFd Bank, as its trade name.

“It tells people we are a bank and is an abbreviation of our current name.

Along with the change came an entirely new logo as well. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO I-17 ON-RAMP CLOSURES AT PINNACLE PEAK ROAD

WITH THE SEASON OF HOLIDAY TRAVEL UPON US, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO CHECK YOUR ROUTES BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT ON A ROAD TRIP OR VACATION TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON. In addition to paying extra-close attention on the road while driving due to more travelers and an influx of out of towners that may not be as familiar with our roads, it’s important to check construction and closures to either plan for extra time or route a detour.

The I-17 has been experiencing closures at the on-ramp of Pinnacle Peak Road and according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the southbound I-17 on-ramp will remain

closed around-the-clock through the evening of Sunday, December 22.

Additionally, the northbound 1-17 exit ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will be closed around the clock through Monday, January 6, 2020.

• The southbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary twoway road between Premier RV and Self-Storage and Adobe Drive.

These closures will further allow the continuing reconstruction of the I-17 traffic interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads.

• The northbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Williams Drive and the roadway south of Adams Traditional Academy/north of the Phoenix Metro RV Park.

According to its website, during these closures, ADOT will temporarily reconfigure portions of the north- and southbound I-17 frontage roads between Pinnacle Peak and Deer Valley roads while ramps at I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road are reconstructed. The temporary reconfigurations below are scheduled to remain in place through 5 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2020:

Work to reconstruct the Interstate 17 traffic interchanges at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads in north Phoenix is accelerating through the end of 2019 and into early 2020. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises everyone who lives, works and drives in the area to allow extra travel time and be prepared to use detours while several ramp,

roadway and interstate restrictions are in place. Most work is scheduled to occur during overnight and early morning hours; however, ramp closures at I-17 will be in place continuously, seven days a week, while work is underway.

ADOT also notes that these scheduled closures (and re-openings) are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors, so it’s important to check the website for updates. While experiencing heavy traffic or delays due to these closures, keep the spirit of the season alive by allowing extra space for other drivers to merge and providing courtesy on the road to ensure the holiday travel doesn’t bring out any Grinchy road rage. ARIZONA TEACHERS RECEIVE $1 MILLION IN GRANTS

FROM FIESTA BOWL CHARITIES WISHES FOR TEACHERS, POWERED BY DRIVETIME AS PART OF ITS MISSION TO BENEFIT ARIZONANS THROUGH YOUTH, SPORTS AND EDUCATION, THE FIESTA BOWL ORGANIZATION AND ITS FIESTA BOWL CHARITIES WISHES FOR TEACHERS PROGRAM, POWERED BY DRIVETIME HAS DONATED $1 MILLION TOTAL TO 200 ARIZONA TEACHERS FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR. This $1 million granting is believed to be the largest donation to Arizona teachers.

The full list of teachers who received a Wishes for Teachers grant may be found online at fiestabowl. org/sports/wishesforteachers. At $5,000 each for 200 teachers across the state, 138,447 students, 177 schools, 52 School Districts and 40 cities will be positively impacted. Specific to the Peoria area, are the following teachers: Michael Goodhope of Cotton Boll Elementary School (first grade), CJ Miller of West Wing School (PE), Michelle Barkley of Paseo Verde Elementary (Library) Of the 39 Phoenix West Valley area wishes, teachers plan to purchase furniture, Chromebooks, digital cameras and editing software for photography, and inspire kids to get up and move with new gym equipment.

Each fall, Arizona K-12 public or charter school teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing their school or classroom need and, after meeting the criteria, wishes are selected by random drawing for teachers to receive a $5,000 grant.

“Teachers are so important in shaping today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. They work tirelessly and selflessly every day, giving not only their time, but often money from their own pockets,” said Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director. “Wishes for Teach-

ers supports, honors and celebrates Arizona’s teachers for their commitment to our children and donating $1 million to Arizona’s teachers, provides resources they have only wished to have in the past.”

Each of the unique 200 teacher wishes will benefit teachers and schools in technology, reading, music, fitness and more. Including this season, over the four years of the program, Fiesta Bowl Wishes for Teachers has granted $3.2 million to Arizona teachers, impacting over 150,000 children across the state.

“Wishes for Teachers is exceptional in how it helps schools and teachers upgrade facilities, provide needed equipment and support student learning,” said Don Reese, DriveTime Chief Executive Officer. “The great gift of education is very important; as we get educated, we get the meaning of life and that’s how people come together. Wishes for Teachers benefits teachers, an extraordinary vocation that gives the gift of education every day.”

In addition to the financial grant, selected teachers will be recognized in the Desert Financial Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 28, and on-field at the Cheez-It® Bowl at Chase Field on December 27.

MARICOPA LIVE STEAMERS TAKES GUESTS ON A 20-MINUTE TRAIN RIDE TO THE NORTH POLE THIS SEASON BEGINS MARICOPA LIVE STEAMERS 12TH YEAR OF PROVIDING TRAIN RIDES TO THE NORTH POLE FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE. On Friday and Saturday evenings through December 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., trains will leave Adobe Station for the one-mile trip past giant trees of lights and decorations. Each trip will pass our 50-foot Megatree with 8,000 LED’s that are synchronized to holiday music. Be sure to dress warm as it has been known to snow during the journey! When you return to the station, visit Santa and Mrs. Claus or Shelby’s Junior Engineer School where your budding engineer can take the controls on one of our specially equipped locomotives for a short trip through the freight yard.

All of the Steamers staff are members and volunteers who share a love of trains and wish to preserve and share the heritage of these mighty machines.

Their club is a 501C-3 non-profit organization and they receive no funding of any kind – they operate only on membership dues and public donations. They are also open to the public on the first and third full weekends (Saturday and Sunday) of the month

WHAT THE TRUCK?! TESLA FINALLY UNVEILS “CYBERTRUCK”

AFTER MUCH HINT-DROPPING AND HYPE BUILD UP VIA SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERVIEWS, TESLA CEO ELON MUSK REVEALED A PROTOTYPE OF THE NEW “CYBERTRUCK” ON NOVEMBER 21, THE LAST DAY OF THE LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW. Tesla’s first ever truck has been a longtime coming. Musk has taken to Twitter to tease the electric pickup truck release (which he first announced way back in

2013) and earlier this year, Musk teased fans with a mysterious image of part of a truck that could either be interpreted as a hood or the bed of the pickup with a sleek, matching tonneau cover on board.

The Tesla CEO got fans buzzing through other hints that his latest vehicle would be inspired by the movie Blade Runner, and he also claimed that the truck would be “something quite unique, unlike anything.” Not one to shy away from tooting his company’s own horn, Musk referred to the “cyberpunk truck,” as Tesla’s “best product

However, not all claims may have been thoroughly tested prior to the reveal. While Musk’s claim that his new truck was “bulletproof” (at least to smaller firearms) panned out — as a demonstration of sledgehammering the sides resulted in no damage to be seen, the demonstration of the truck’s “unbreakable” metal glass windows didn’t go quite as well.

When a metal ball was thrown at the first window, it shattered immediately.

Musk said the throw was “too hard,” but the glass cracked on the second attempt too. Musk stood by his claim noting, “But it didn’t go through.”

Reactions lit up the social media world following the reveal. Some comments likened Tesla’s new truck to a drawing

a kindergarten might have drawn. With the Cybertruck hype, Tesla has enjoyed a hearty rise in stock over the past few months — up 63 percent since August.

But it will be interesting to see what kind of demand the truck, which will be sold in the fall of 2021, will attract in terms of actual buyers. Musk had admitted in one interview, “I actually don’t know if a lot of people will buy this pickup truck or not.”

One thing’s for certain, Tesla has created a unique cult-like following with its brand and adding a truck to the fleet is certainly an inclusive move for the company. While this might not be a truck for the masses, Musk had also said at one point, “If there’s only a small number of people that like the truck, I guess we’ll make a more conventional truck in the future.” yourupperwestsider.com

MAKING WRONG-WAY SIGNS MORE NOTICEABLE – IN A BIG WAY

EFFORTS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CRASHES CAUSED BY OFTEN-IMPAIRED WRONGWAY DRIVERS INVOLVE A VARIETY OF COUNTERMEASURES. They include increasing the size and visibility of wrong-way signs at state highway interchanges.

Those upgrades received a major boost in the form of a $2.1 million project to install new larger wrong way signage at more than 140 interchanges, along with other improvements, along several Phoenixarea freeways.

If you drive in the area, you’re much more likely to notice the larger “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs at the top of freeway off-ramps in the Valley. Not only are they bigger, they also represent updated national standards by being located lower to the ground and thus hopefully more in line with a driver’s line of vision. Yes, that’s about making them easier to see so that a wrong-way driver might not travel down that off-ramp.

The signs along exit ramps are not the only changes that crews, working mostly at night, made as part of this project. They also added many more of the large, white arrows that are located on the pavement

of exit ramps. Those arrows point in the “right” direction of travel, as another measure designed to get the attention of a driver heading the wrong way.

One other upgrade was the installation of dozens of large “Wrong Way” signs, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet, installed above the left lanes of freeways.

They’re on the backs of bridges and other overhead structures and you, traveling the right way, may have noticed a few of them if you’ve glanced to the left across the median.

Those noticeable signs, facing in the wrong direction, are above the freeway left lanes because wrong-way drivers tend to travel in those lanes. More than two dozen of these signs were first installed along I-17 in Phoenix in 2017 in association with ADOT’s first-in-the-nation thermal camera wrong-way vehicle alert system.

ADOT has been installing larger and more visible wrong way signs not only along Phoenix-area freeways but also at highway interchanges across the state over the last several years.

This particular project has focused on sections of interstates 10 and 17, US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the East Valley, State Route 51 as well as Loop 101 (Agua Fria

Freeway) and Loop 303 in the West Valley.

It remains important to note that more noticeable signs and other countermeasures we’ve mentioned can’t prevent someone, especially someone who’s impaired, from getting behind the wheel and becoming a wrong-way driver. The signs are big.

But stopping impaired driving would make a lifesaving difference in an even bigger way. That’s something to keep in mind as we head into the holiday travel season.

OLD TOWN HOLIDAY FESTIVAL MOVES TO NEW DATE THE 32ND ANNUAL OLD TOWN HOLIDAY FESTIVAL AND THIRD SECOND SATURDAYS WILL BE ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14.

Two large Peoria events are coming together for a night of free holiday fun in Old Town Peoria from 5 to 10 p.m., near 83rd and Grand Avenues.

LOCAL WAKE SURFER CONNOR BURNS MAKES WAVES AT WORLD WAKE SURFING COMPETITION

CONNOR BURNS ONLY STARTED WAKESURFING FOUR SHORT YEARS AGO AND HE’S ALREADY RACKING UP THE ACCOLADES. His latest win was snagged right in his own backyard — at the World Wake Surfing Competition which took place November 2 at Lake Pleasant.

Burns, who serves as a wakesurf coach and teaches lessons at Scorpion Bay Marina, began competing in the World Series of Wake Surfing in 2016, where he became the World Champion in the Amateur Men’s Wakesurf Division. Just a year later, he opted out of the Outlaw division and chose to surf in the Men’s Professional Wakesurf division, a move that earned him the title of World Champion.

His passion took him all over the world in 2017 and 2018, including to multiple locations throughout the U.S. as well as France, Canada, Japan, and Hong Kong. During his travels, he placed among the top three at most events.

moves which have earned him the title of Trick of the Year Winner in 2018 and 2019, Burns designed and engineered the “Burnsy Pro” board which Kanuk Board Company crafts out of Canada. Q: Is CBD the same as marijuana and will it make me high?

A: No, CBD is NOT marijuana and it will NOT make you high. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 different cannabinoids. Like Hemp, marijuana is also a variety of cannabis plant. Hemp plants contain CBD and trace amounts of THC at or below 0.3%. THC has both medicinal and psychoactive properties, whereas CBD has tremendous medicinal properties (neuro-protectant and anti-inflammatory) with no psychoactive effects.

Q: Is CBD legal?

A: Yes, Hemp-derived CBD is Federally legal. CBD is primarily produced from hemp plants but can also be produced from marijuana plants. CBD is illegal if sourced from marijuana. It is important to know the source, and that

you are purchasing from a reputable supplier. If a CBD product tests higher than the Federally mandated THC level of 0.3%, the product is deemed illegal.

There are a number of products on the market that are not properly lab tested, do not contain the labeled amount of CBD, and exceed the legal amount of THC. Proper lab testing is crucial to make sure that you are not breaking the law unknowingly.

Q: How do I know if a CBD product is legitimate/safe?

A: The average consumer won’t know and may find that many CBD products don’t work for them. Lab testing verifies the CBD content/potency as well as tests for bacteria, mold, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. There are few regulations governing today’s CBD industry which means purchasing from a reputable source that follows proper lab testing procedures is extremely important.

Q: How do I determine what is a quality CBD product?

A: We have an ongoing joke in our lab, “If you wouldn’t buy sushi at a gas station, would you buy gas station CBD?” Always start with a reputable brand with proper labeling and verified third party lab testing. Full-Spectrum CBD is king because it produces an “entourage effect” in conjunction with other cannabinoids, as opposed to a “Pure” or “Isolated” CBD, which has limited benefits and no traceable THC. Seek products that have all-natural ingredients and use Super Critical CO2 Extraction. Quality CBD is not cheap.

Q: How does CBD work in my body?

A: To put it simply, all animals and humans have an Endocannabinoid System already present in their bodies.

You have receptors throughout your body that accept and use these cannabinoids (CBD being the most prolific) to regulate homeostasis in the body.

That’s why CBD can work for so many ailments.

Q: What is the best delivery method for CBD? A: It is scientifically proven that smoking a medication and inhaling the vapors has high efficacy and is fast-acting.

However, it is generally accepted that smoking, and more recently vaping, is not recommended for your health. The best delivery method would then be CBD Oil administered sublingually and absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

You can also get CBD through topical applications (creams/lotions) absorbed through the skin. Topical applications are more location specific and can be very effective but have less efficacy than sublingual delivery. You can also ingest CBD (softgels/gummies/honey), but this has the lowest efficacy.

t its third annual Badge Bash, Girl Scouts– Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) raised $280,000 to benefit Girl Scouting in Arizona. GSACPC was joined by more than 500 attendees, including Girl Scout alum, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, and dozens of sponsors including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona and Arizona Cardinals.

This adults-only event gave attendees the opportunity to experience Girl Scouting first-hand and see how it can transform girls into G.I.R.L.s – go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders. Attendees gathered their “troop” of friends for a night of fun program-inspired activities to test their outdoor, healthy living, entrepreneurship and life skills, earning badges along the way. The activities ranged from archery to balloon dart painting to trivia.

After the festivities, guests enjoyed dinner under the stars and a short program on the power of Girl Scouting.

The Bob and Renee Parsons Foundation was honored with the Promise Award for their inspirational leadership and continued support of Girl Scouting in Arizona. The award was accepted by executive director Laura Mitchell on

WARMING WEST VALLEY HOMES WITH FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

R

obyn Halperin, owner and founder of Robyn’s Nest home décor boutique located at 24650 North Lake Pleasant Parkway in Peoria, has always had a flair for design. And while she had always wanted to own her own store, the dream had just been just that — a dream — for many years.

However, the idea was hatched when Robyn was a young girl. “For as long as I can remember, I was always into design,” she says.

“I was always fixing up my room, changing the décor around and doing DIY projects.” After high school, one of her close friend’s mom asked Robyn to help design her home — and that’s when her love for design really took flight.

“That kick start gave me the confidence to move forward with a design career,” Robyn says. However, marriage, raising children and life in general took precedence, but she maintained smaller design projects on the side. One such project included decorating doctors’ offices, hotel lobbies, other commercial buildings and even some residences for the holidays in her then home state of Ohio.

As her children grew and her oldest daughter moved to Arizona to attend ASU, Robyn and her family considered coming out west. They had family in the area and would often visit. “Finally, we took the plunge,” says Robyn of her move out to Arizona from back East. “Once we moved, we wondered why we didn’t do it sooner.” As for how she ended up living — and eventually opening up her boutique — in the West Valley, Robyn says that she relied on a friend who grew up in the area and whose wife was a Realtor. “We looked all over the valley during three trips out here before moving,” she says. “But we loved WestWing. It was just developing at the time, but I loved the views, the green grass and the mountains — it was like a little bit of home — and it has a very small town, family feel. We got to know our neighbors and made great friends in the community.” Soon after she moved, her parents moved out to the area, settling into Vistancia.

Her husband, Scott encouraged her to pursue her longtime dream and in 2014 she purchased a flower shop as a stepping stone. “I had dabbled in floral design — it’s a lot like designing a room, and it was really fun,” says Robyn. “I learned a lot and the experience gave me a very quick understanding of how to run a business.”

Though Robyn enjoyed the flower shop, her true dream was still in her future. After about three years, an opportunity presented itself for a vacant space, the very same space which she and her husband had looked at when they were first looking for a spot to open the flower shop. By this time, Robyn had the experience of running a business under her belt and she was really ready to take the leap. “It’s a great area with shopping and restaurants on every corner of the intersection,” she says of the location, which is just a few miles from her home in The Meadows community.

“I love what I do,” Robyn says, explaining how much she enjoys finding new items to put into the shop (much of which she gets inspiration from at the markets) and also that the boutique’s style itself has evolved since it opened. “I’m really drawn to a warm desert modern vibe,” she says, noting that transitional pieces and mixing different furniture can help people make their home a reflection of their personal style.

Robyn’s Nest carries unique home goods including furniture, lighting, home décor and gift items that are unlike anything that can be found in the chain stores. Robyn enjoys going to the four major industry markets (High Point in the Carolinas, Vegas, which is Robyn’s favorite mostly

“One of the really fun parts is working personally with our customers who are the people that live in the community,” she says. “We’re not just ringing up customers. We get to know them and they become friends.”

And that makes the boutique’s special events that much more fun!

Throughout the year, Robyn’s Nest hosts ladies’ nights and in the weeks leading up to the holidays, the boutique features the “Seven Weeks

of Christmas” events that highlight a local vendor while guests shop and socialize.

In addition to using her boutique as a way to bring community together and advocate for the area through the Upper West Side PHX local grassroots organization, Robyn — along with her husband, both of whom are huge animal rights advocates — loves to collaborate with other organizations in support of animals, such as the Soi Dog Foundation, and particularly to advocate for elephants. “Animals don’t have a voice — so we have to be theirs,” Robyn says. Perhaps her dream of owning her own home furnishings store is not so far off from her passion — ensuring that animals have a safe haven of their own. After all, isn’t home truly where the heart is?

THE 4 P’S OF WINTERIZING YOUR HOME IN ARIZONA

n Arizona, most people think winterizing your home means taking off your sunscreens and planting the winter grass (though that is part of it). Even though our winter weather is just about the best in the world, there are some winters where we get a night or two, and sometimes even three that drop below freezing.

Winterizing a home can be a daunting task if you live in Minnesota, North Dakota, or Colorado. Here in the Valley of the Sun, we do winterize our homes - however, we do things a little differently.

1. PIPES Wrap Your Pipes: The areas you need to worry about are any exposed water lines from the ground to the house.

These provide water to your landscaping and pool (or maybe a water feature). Most hardware stores carry preformed insulation just for this purpose, but you can get away with a bath towel and some duct tape in a pinch.

2. PLANTS Protect Your Plants: I love the Styrofoam hats on the cacti when it gets cold. I recently found out that you shouldn’t use anything to cover the cacti that are nonbreathable (i.e, plastic). I am sure you have seen those sheets and towels covering trees and plants overnight.

This works, just remember your HOA may not react too kindly if you leave those sheets out for more than one night.

3. POOLS A pool is a significant investment. It is worth taking some time before it cools down (and the nights when it gets to freezing temperatures) to keep your pool in as good of shape as possible. Make sure you test your chemical levels, clean the pool thoroughly, and be ready to run your pump at night when the temperature is going to drop below freezing, so the pipes don’t freeze.

4. PICTURES Most importantly – don’t forget to post pictures of the beautiful weather to all of your friends and family on Facebook, rubbing it in that they don’t live here. Making them all jealous of our winter weather is a good thing!

ore than 500,000 military veterans reside in Arizona and many are still learning to cope with the everyday struggles of their transition back into society.

Whether it’s dealing with medical costs not covered by military health insurance or adjusting to civilian life, out-of-pocket expenses and life changes can feel overwhelming for any former serviceman or servicewoman.

Members of the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), comprised of Marine Raiders, also face the challenge of being the newest to the United States Special Operations Command.

Formed in 2006 by Donald Rumsfeld, Marine Raiders are the most elite of the country’s special operations teams. They are quiet professionals deployed around the world to execute complex operations in uncertain environments. You’d think coming home would give them peace of mind, but that’s not always the case. Being new also means fewer support systems exist.

This is why the 501c3 nonprofit Marine Raider Foundation stood up in 2012; not only to pay for the out-of-pocket expenses accrued by raiders and their families, but also with an emphasis on building personal, professional and family resiliency.

This past October, Marine Raider Foundation hosted its inaugural Valley of the Sun Gala in Phoenix.

More than 150 people joined 16 Gold Star Family members (parents, siblings and spouses of military service members who died in combat) at the gala to raise $86,000.

MARSOC Foundation’s four main programs are raider support, including transition assistance, funding for award ceremonies and receptions, and funding for events that focus on personal and professional resiliency; family

resiliency support, including assisting raider families experiencing health and welfare challenges and with events that enhance personal and family resiliency; tragedy assistance and survivor support, including assistance for wounded, ill and injured raiders, Gold Star Families and funeral services and commemorations for MARSOC personnel; raider legacy and preservation support, including construction and upkeep of memorial structures and commemorative items, as well as funding for events that commemorate WWII and MARSOC Raiders. Since 2012, the Marine Raider Foundation has provided more than $4 million to World War II Marine Raiders, active-duty and former Marine Raiders and their families.

“The outpouring of support from the Phoenix community at the inaugural Valley of the Sun Gala sends a powerful message to the Marine Raider community that their service and sacrifice do not go unnoticed,” said Executive Director Andy Christian.

The Marine Raider Foundation has opportunities for volunteers throughout the year, including donating time or money to support veterans and their families Valleywide. Anyone interested in cultivating a deeper relationship with the organization may become an ambassador or host his or her own fundraising events. In doing so, the mission of the Marine Raider Foundation will be supported by engaging with local communities, increasing awareness and facilitating fundraising activities by seeking out contributions. As this year comes to a close, it is an important time to contribute to those that have made many sacrifices in service to this country.

s your happiness being determined by a numerical value? When you look down at the number just beyond your toes, does your mood change? Do you believe this figure is the best indication of your health? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it’s time for a breakup. Happy or sad, this relationship is lopsided and you are simply giving the scale too much power.

The time to make a change is NOW. It may seem obvious, but the scale measures overall weight. This includes our bones, water, muscle and adipose tissue. This number varies from day-to-day based on sodium, hydration, hormones, exercise and even stress. Influxes are a normal occurrence in the human body. The success of your nutrition and fitness cannot be solely based on this variable which can differ from hour-tohour. It is important to remember that changes in body composition during a fitness journey do not always result in shifts on the scale. Rather

the emphasis should be placed on energy levels, inches lost, how your clothes are fitting, and your overall feeling.

The best way to move on from this unhealthy relationship is with a clean break. The scale has shown its true colors and there is no hope that it will change. You cannot attempt to slowly wean yourself off because that desire and impulse is far too strong. It rests on your bathroom floor just waiting to catch your eye. Time to remove the batteries or banish it to the closet. For too long, it has been a part of your daily routine and had the ability to dictate your emotions or behavior.

Even if you didn’t vocalize it, you had some ideal number in mind. Some combination of digits that would signify success. It is completely natural when embarking on a health and fitness journey to consider the scale as a valuable metric. However, it’s time for a priority check and a realignment of what really matters.

First things first… You must find happiness with yourself. Cliché, I know, but the truth is the scale certainly won’t do it. There is typically an underlying issue we have not addressed and our failed attempts to find physical success reflect that. A continuous loop of hope, shortterm success, frustration, disappointment, and ultimately

quitting. We regularly allow ourselves to fall into this vicious cycle due to lack of movement to some arbitrary number. This makes us more vulnerable and susceptible to the ever enticing “fad-diet” which promises to solve all our problems.

Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Our true and primary goal must be sustainable, long-term success.

Healing the mind and body from within should be the first steps to any nutrition and fitness journey.

We seem to overlook or undervalue internal measures because they aren’t visible and are more difficult to quantify. If we place all our energy on the external physique, we will undoubtedly fail at some point. Therefore, balance is key. Eating healthier, exercising regularly, and focusing on a positive mindset will allow you to reap rewards in health, vitality and overall well-being. These are all things your relationship with the scale was missing and it could never provide. No hard feelings… You’ve moved on and are looking forward to what lies ahead. Feeling good on the inside is your new crush. It checks all the boxes and gives you butterflies like you’ve never felt before. Sounds like a keeper.

rizona is known for being a fantastic place to get outside and enjoy the wonders of nature, regardless of the activity you choose. In 2017, the Arizona State Parks & Trails system was awarded the Gold Medal for being the best-managed state park system in the nation from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.

Arizona State Parks & Trails are located throughout the state on more than 64,000 acres of pristine Arizona wilderness, near lakes, deserts, forests, and natural wonders. There are 35 state park areas around Arizona, with 18 recreational parks, nine historical parks, seven conservation areas, and one memorial park. Here are a few of our favorites parks to visit in different parts of the state.

This 286-acre nature preserve and environmental education center sits in the heart of Red Rock country and offers gorgeous forest and creek-side hiking trails with amazing views of the giant red rock formations that define Sedona. The park also has a fantastic visitors center, educational facilities and libraries, and many fascinating environmental classes and programs.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE – PAYSON Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located near Payson on the Mogollon Rim. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a stream fed by natural springs. The stream flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM – SUPERIOR One of the best reasons to venture east of Phoenix on Highway 60 is to visit the diverse beauty of Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Founded in the 1920s by mining magnate Col. William Boyce Thompson, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. This is a beautiful spot for a day trip, and a must-see drive into the mountains near Superior on the way to Globe.

CATALINA – TUCSON If you’re looking for fantastic natural views of Sonoran Desert mountains, you must pay a visit to Catalina State Park in Tucson. Nestled in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, this park provides 5,500 acres of fantastic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, through canyons, streams, and desert in the Coronado National Forest. A favorite

spot for bird and wildlife watching, the park offers beautiful views of mountains, desert flora, and wildlife.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS – BENSON Celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, Kartchner Caverns is a world-class Arizona State Park that features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. A well-kept secret for decades, the park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course touring the pristine and previously untouched caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly.

JOJO RABBIT

During WWII in Nazi Germany, a young boy questions his beliefs when he discovers a young Jewish girl secretly living in his house.

Taika Waititi manages to perfectly walk the tightrope between poor taste and edgy comedy. Jojo Rabbit tears apart fascism in a comedic yet still heartfelt way, never pulling punches and still giving such a horrific time the brutally honest look it deserves. Even the film’s design and cinematography match the tonal shifts between light and dark. The cast is a perfect mix of newcomers (Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie) and seasoned actors (Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell) who bring the characters to life. This was a passion project for Waititi and it shows.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Two sailors suspect there are greater forces conspiring against them on their isolated lighthouse shift.

The wonderful thing about Robert Eggers’ new film is how the viewer soon feels the same isolation as the characters. The camerawork, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe’s performances and visuals capture you and place you into their world before you know it. This world is scary, unrelenting, nothing ever feels normal or safe, and it will continuously keep you guessing if something is actually watching our char-

acters or if they’re going insane. The black and white photography and unique aspect ratio are key in this style. Creating the atmosphere perfectly is Mark Korven’s absolutely terrifying score - one of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a new horror classic.

FORD V FERRARI

The true story of Ford’s efforts to outdo Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford V Ferrari is 152 minutes long and doesn’t waste a single moment. Everything is central to the story and includes the perfect amount of focus on the actual creation of the car; even the failures and improvements get their proper showcase here. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are wonderful as two distinct characters that mix well together, and director James Mangold shoots the race scenes in a way that makes the final race one of the best theatrical experiences of the year.

PARASITE

A family in South Korea forms a relationship with an upper-class family which brings dire consequences.

Director Bong Joon-ho has made his masterpiece with this new thriller. This film astounds with a mixture of incredible filmmaking, writing and an amazingly diverse personality of cast members, and offers an intriguing look into class disparity and differences. A film like this receiving a wide release is rare, so I highly recommend taking the time to see it.
