Mesquite District Update from Peoria City Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher AT OVER 145 SQUARE MILES, MESQUITE IS THE LARGEST OF PEORIA’S SIX COUNCIL DISTRICTS. It encompasses Lake Pleasant Regional Park as well as numerous schools, parks, commercial, and residential developments, including the Vistancia community. Here’s the latest news from Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher, who represents the Mesquite district.

HONORING OUR VETERANS Arizona has a long history involving the United States military and service members beginning before statehood. With the significant installations and missions at Luke Air Force Base and other bases around the state, major employers and manufacturing moved to the area.

Our Peoria community has benefited from the Luke AFB operations and the many veterans who have chosen to live and retire here.

Each November 11, on Veterans Day, we can express our gratitude to veterans who have honorably served their country in war or peacetime. Honoring our veterans is something that the City of Peoria and I feel very strongly about.

In the Mesquite District, we are very fortunate to have many wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly to honor and assist our veterans. There are two groups that I want to recognize for their significant efforts – Trilogy Veterans Club (TVC) and Veterans Furniture Center (VFC).

The TVC is a fantastic group of residents that provide support to military veterans in need. Their mission is

to engage military veterans, cultivate fellowship, create missions and opportunities that support military veterans in need, and undertake support for charitable and social events. This is done through support of various nonprofits, including Veterans First Limited, which is focused on providing resources and assistance for homeless women veterans.

TVC also supports the St. Mary’s Food Bank, which distributes food to hundreds of nonprofit partners through most of Arizona. Club members work either in the pantry (preparing baskets of food to be delivered curbside), or the warehouse (sorting and stocking donated food items). In addition, the TVC works with MANA (Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force) House with what the club calls, “Totes for Troops.” Several totes are loaded with such things as coffee tins, shower curtains, combination locks, laundry detergent, bottled water, etc., and delivered to MANA House for use by military veterans in need. If you live in the Vistancia area, you may have also seen this group hard at work keeping the community litter free due to their involvement in the Adopt-a-Street program.

The VFC is a wonderful local nonprofit comprised of residents in the Northwest Valley that serves our veterans. This organization is working to end veteran homelessness and provides much needed new furniture and household goods for veterans transitioning into homes from being homeless. Since the VFC was founded, they have helped more than 2,700 veterans. Over 300 veterans were given a new lease on life as they moved into permanent housing. The VFC delivers more than furniture, they deliver hope. It is given as a gift, from

veterans to a fellow veteran in need. The message is clear: someone cares, someone is offering a hand up, and someone has their back. It is not a government agency or an entitlement. It is fellow veterans who believe in them and want them to successfully return to society.

In addition to these two incredible organizations, we are fortunate to have many nonprofits supporting our veterans with workforce programs, education, housing, and more. I hope every Peoria resident will consider lending their time, talent, or treasure to honor the service of our veterans.

Those looking for a refresh of their home décor need to look no further than Robyn’s Nest, a unique home décor boutique in Peoria.

“When you walk into Robyn’s Nest, you instantly feel at home,” says Travy Williams, a partner at Robyn’s Nest. “The team always goes above and beyond to help customers curate pieces that transform their home into a nest.”

City News This Month is Residents’ Last Chance to Help the City Define New District Boundaries THIS FALL, THE CITY OF PEORIA STARTED THE FEDERALLY MANDATED REDISTRICTING PROCESS TO REDRAW DISTRICT BOUNDARIES. Peoria must submit the proposed city council district boundaries by the end of 2021.

New city council district boundaries will be in effect for the August and November 2022 elections. The city has been hosting open house events since August, and this is the last month for residents to weigh in on the process.

There are a handful of in-person and virtual open house events remaining to learn about the redistricting requirements and the online mapping software that will be used to help rebalance the city council districts.

WHAT IS REDISTRICTING? Redistricting is the process of adjusting the boundaries of voting districts in accordance with population shifts.

District lines are redrawn following the completion of each decennial and mid-decennial census count. This is required by city charter and federal law.

DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS • Substantially equal population • Protect minority voting rights pursuant to the Voting Rights Act • Be contiguous OPTIONAL DISTRICT CRITERIA • Be compact because it reinforces the ability of residents to relate to each other and their elected representatives.

• Follow visible or man-made boundaries such as geographic features, city, town and county boundaries, and undivided census tracts.

• Not contain more than one master-planned, agerestricted community to best represent all residents.

• Preserve communities of interest and should not unnecessarily divide neighborhoods that have similar socioeconomic, lifestyle or political interests.

Loop 303 Improvements Under Study East of Lake Pleasant Parkway FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDING NEW LANES AND TRAFFIC INTERCHANGES ALONG THE STRETCH OF LOOP 303 BETWEEN LAKE PLEASANT PARKWAY AND INTERSTATE 17 ARE CURRENTLY BEING STUDIED BY THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT) IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE MARICOPA ASSOCIATION OF GOVERNMENTS, WHICH SERVES AS THE PHOENIX-AREA’S FREEWAY PLANNING AGENCY.

With current and planned development in areas along Loop 303 west of I-17, the study is being conducted in anticipation of a growth in traffic using the freeway.

The study is evaluating a shorter-term addition of a third traffic lane in each direction along Loop 303 between Lake Pleasant Parkway and I-17, while also looking at an ultimate freeway configuration that includes four general purpose

lanes and a carpool (HOV) lane in each direction.

Additionally, the ongoing study will evaluate interim and ultimate improvements to the interchange connecting I-17 and Loop 303, including direct freeway-to-freeway ramps. A possible traffic interchange at Loop 303 and 67th Avenue also is being examined.

Meanwhile, ADOT also is looking ahead to a near-term project to construct new Loop 303 interchanges at 43rd and 51st avenues. The interchanges are currently in design with construction anticipated to begin in fall 2022 and completion expected in 2023.

ADOT conducted a virtual public meeting about the Loop 303 study on Wednesday, Oct. 20. There is still time for comments related to the study and planned improvements. Visit azdot.gov/ L303LakePleasantI-17 to learn more about the study and ways to submit comments.

in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration and the cities of Peoria and Phoenix.

ADOT has made substantial progress on a current project to widen Loop 303 to three lanes in each direction between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways in Peoria. Freeway traffic was recently switched to new bridges carrying Loop 303 over the Beardsley Canal and the interchange providing a connection with Peoria’s new Jomax Parkway, north of Happy Valley Parkway. Conversation About the Proposed Waste Transfer Station Continues

By Jenna-Lee Neff RECENTLY, REPUBLIC SERVICES INVITED MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO ATTEND AN OPEN HOUSE EVENT TO SEE THE PROPOSED SITE FOR A NEW WASTE TRANSFER STATION THAT HAS RAISED CONTROVERSY LOCALLY. In addition to the open house event (which took place on October 9), there was also a virtual town hall on September 19. For community members who couldn’t make either event, Republic Services offers a video tour of the proposed waste transfer station location as well as a link to the town hall audio conference on their website at westwingtransfer.com/ resources.

Many locals have spoken out against the project, which has been in planning for more than a year and is on its second proposed location. Some of the most cited concerns are regarding potential health and safety, impact on home

value, traffic disruptions, noise pollution, potential odors, and more.

In a letter sent to Maricopa County and shared in a Facebook group titled “Happy Valley Says NO to a Waste Transfer Station,” local resident Alicia Rooney echoed community concerns about the project.

“All in all, it will destroy our health, destroy our community, and cripple our home prices,” Rooney wrote.

In February 2021, Republic Services announced their intention to build the waste transfer station in an industrial area near El Mirage Road and Loop 303, just four months after they abandoned plans for the original location in response to community feedback.

The land, which is currently zoned ID-2 for light industrial use, will have to be rezoned to ID-3 to accommodate heavy industrial use before the company can move forward.

“Not only would this [rezoning] set a precedent for similar heavy-industrial companies to swoop on in and take over this residential area, but its close proximity to a sub-station is a disaster waiting to happen,” Rooney wrote.

Republic Services filed a rezoning application in August and Maricopa County held a technical advisory meeting on September 21. The meeting did not allow for public comment, but members of the public were welcome to tune in virtually as county agencies discussed the proposal. “Transfer stations are critical pieces of infrastructure that allow community to grow and develop safely and sustainably,” Herring says, noting that there are more than 30 waste transfer facilities in Maricopa Country, including facilities in Scottsdale, Gilbert, and North Phoenix, but that the fast-growing Northwest Valley is the only part of the county without this infrastructure.

“The benefits of this new location are numerous,” says Stephen Herring, municipal relationship manager for Republic Services. “For example, trucks will avoid main roads and neighborhoods, and will use a proposed future access road at the 303 and El Mirage. Peoria Now Offers Free Weekend Circulator Service to Residents THE CITY OF PEORIA JUST LAUNCHED A FREE WEEKEND CIRCULATOR SERVICE CALLED POGO DESTINATIONS. Residents can hop on the circulator and bounce around town to places like Peoria’s trail system, Park West stores and restaurants, and Arizona Broadway Theatre.

“We are one Peoria and POGO Destinations is here to connect residents to points of pride, events and destinations within our entire city – north to south,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “The circulator will provide the opportunity for residents to conveniently access theaters, shopping, and spring training games. Residents who live in the north can easily share in points of interest in the south, such as Second Saturdays in Old Town and unique dining at Park West; residents who

live in the south can effortlessly access areas north, such as the mountainous hiking trails.”

The purpose of POGO Destinations is to connect residents to various Peoria points of pride, encouraging them to explore the entire city from north to south.

Sharing The Holidays with a Loved One with Dementia

The hustle and bustle may cause fatigue and overstimulation in someone living with dementia, leading to confusion, anxiety, or agitation. Caregivers may become overwhelmed, particularly with the additional challenges posed

by COVID-19. Hospice of the Valley’s Dementia Team shares ways to modify

traditional holiday celebrations so they continue to bring joy.

• Try to maintain routine as much as possible.

• Keep expectations realistic and give yourself permission to do only what you can reasonably accomplish. Ask family and friends for help so there is time to do shopping, cooking or just rest.

• Be flexible. Perhaps celebrate with brunch if your loved one is usually tired or anxious later in the day. Allow him/ her to direct the flow of the day. If he/ she needs a nap, honor that need.

• Keep gatherings small (three to five people) and simple. Help others understand that decisions regarding in-person and virtual (phone or video calls) celebrations will focus on whatever is best to keep your person safe and comfortable.

• Do not talk in front of the person with dementia as if he/she is not present. Do not argue, contradict, or question. Avoid explanations that may overwhelm.

Update others on changes so they can

adjust their communication styles to fit the person’s current abilities.

• Develop a ritual to honor the person living with dementia — maybe serve a favorite dish this person prepared in the past and give everyone the recipe. Share favorite stories that involve the person.

• Provide soft and sweet foods (ice cream is always a good choice).

• To bring joy with sensory stimulation, choose ways that honor the lifelong preferences of the person with dementia and bring comfort. Choose experiences associated with the holiday — songs, traditional foods, the smell of seasonal potpourri or spices, holiday stories or photos.

The best gifts are often your time and focused attention. Simply listen to caregivers and offer opportunities for respite, even if it’s an hour or two of downtime. For the person living with dementia, gentle touch, conversation, and a comforting presence are reassuring.

And because time is even more precious during the holiday season, Hospice of the Valley’s support groups for dementia caregivers are available on Zoom from the comfort of home. All are welcome to join these no-cost sessions: • Tuesdays at 10 a.m., join Dr. Maribeth Gallagher, Dementia Program director, for a short practice to help relax and refresh, then discuss your heartfelt concerns as a caregiver.

• Wednesdays at noon, experienced social worker Nicole Crothers discusses the challenges and rewards of providing care for a person living with dementia.

The Great American Smokeout Takes Place November 18 ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, ABOUT 32.4 MILLION AMERICAN ADULTS STILL SMOKE CIGARETTES, AND SMOKING REMAINS THE SINGLE LARGEST PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH AND ILLNESS IN THE WORLD. Smoking causes an estimated 480,000 deaths every year, or about 1 in 5 deaths. And more than 16 million Americans live with a smokingrelated disease. To help raise awareness, the American Cancer Society hosts The Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November (this year on November 18), where it encourages smokers to start the journey to quit smoking.

“Quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time.

And a plan. You don’t have to stop smoking in one day,” according to the American Cancer Society. “Start with day one. Let the Great American Smokeout event on the third Thursday in November be your day to start your journey toward a smokefree life. You’ll be joining thousands of people who smoke across the country in taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing your cancer risk.”

TIPS TO QUITTING SMOKING Courtesy of the American Cancer Society • If you want to stop smoking, you can make small changes to your lifestyle that may help you resist the temptation to light up.

• Make a plan. You can start by making a simple promise, set a date and stick to it. Sticking to the “not a drag” rule can really help.

• Think positive. You might have tried to quit smoking before and not managed it, but don’t let that put you off. Look back at the things your experience has taught you and think about how you’re really going to do it this time.

• Start nutrition planning. Changing your food consumption can encourage those cravings. Try changing up your diet to more nutritious foods by incorporating more fruits and vegetables, and even cheese, as it’s proven to make cigarettes taste more terrible. Changing your routine at or after mealtimes will also help ease that “after dinner drag.”

• Drink more water. Carbonated drinks, alcohol, cola, tea and coffee all make cigarettes taste better. Get in the habit of filling up a water bottle before you leave the house.

• Identify your cravings. A craving can last five minutes. Before you give up, make a list of five minute strategies. Go for a walk, get your body moving, or get your mind busy on something when those cravings start. Before you know it, that five minutes will pass quickly.

• Keep your hands and mouth busy. Nicotine replacement therapy can double your chances of success. There are also patches, tablets, lozenges, gum and a nasal spray. If you like holding a cigarette, there are handheld products like the inhalator. When you’re out, try putting your drink in the hand that usually holds a cigarette, or drink from a straw to keep your mouth busy.

• Make a list of reasons to quit. Keep reminding yourself why you made the decision to give up.

Community Trail Etiquette: Who Has the Right of Way?

By Bethany Diaz WITH THE COOLER WEATHER THIS TIME OF YEAR COMES THE NATURAL GRAVITATION TO HIT THE TRAILS AND ENJOY THE BEAUTIFUL OUTDOORS RIGHT IN OUR OWN BACKYARD. Inevitably, those enjoying the trails will come across others doing the same and split decisions will have to be made on more narrow parts of the trail to allow for safe passing. So, with hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and horses all out there enjoying the trails in their own preferred way, who technically has the right of way?

Here’s a handy guide to help you figure it out next time you’re hitting the trails.

HIKERS, TRAIL RUNNERS, AND BIKERS: Hikers and runners technically have the right of way because it’s much easier for mountain bikers to maneuver safely. However, sometimes it’s easier for a hiker or runner to move on technical terrain because they’re going slower, and they can choose to yield their right of way. A biker should never expect to be yielded to, though.

HIKERS, TRAIL RUNNERS, BIKERS, AND HORSES: Not only do horses move the slowest, they can spook easily and buck their rider off. Therefore, simple enough: everyone yields to horses. In general, it’s good practice to stop a minimum of 30 feet away from a horse and allow the horse to pass or alert the rider to determine if they are okay allowing another trail user to pass.

HIKERS AND RUNNERS: A hiker or runner going uphill has the right of way but may yield that if they want to stop for a break. When approaching another person on the trails from behind, a

simple “on your left” or “right behind you” can alert them that there’s a person that would like to pass. It’s also the courteous thing to move and allow them to pass.

Simply put, while every encounter will depend upon the actual placement and activity of users on the trail in addition to how wide the trail is, in general, the widely accepted three-way yielding system should be adhered to: • Everyone yields to horses, • Bikers also yield to runners and hikers, • Horses yield to no one.

Additional helpful tips to keep everyone’s flow on the trails going smoothly: • If listening to music, keep one ear bud out to hear the surroundings. This is helpful to hear others approaching as well as wildlife, such as snakes.

• It’s okay to yield the right of way if the situation calls for that.

• If stopping to chat with a fellow hiker, runner, biker, etc., move slightly off trail.

• If walking with a dog, ensure the dog is not in the middle of the trail to jump on a passerby.

• When hiking, running, or biking in a group, it’s helpful (though not necessary) to alert others as to how many are in the group that will need to pass.

Make a Difference in the Lives of Foster Children This Holiday Season

s the holiday season approaches, the focus of OCJ Kids remains the same: to impact Arizona’s foster children and create memories to last a lifetime.

Since 2006, OCJ Kids has provided opportunities for our community to support Arizona’s foster children who currently live in group homes.

Arizona currently has more than 14,000 children in the foster care system. Many of those children do not live with a traditional foster family but in group homes. OCJ Kids works with the group homes and with the Department of Child Safety offices to bring hope to these children.

As children enter the foster care system, they often come with only the clothes on their back. From the moment children in Arizona enter foster care until the time they leave the system, OCJ Kids is involved. Diapers, wipes, pajamas, hygiene products and clothing are provided as they enter foster care. Transition suitcases filled with supplies and resources are provided to teens as they leave the system at 18. Every year, OCJ Kids hosts a career development fair, cowboy camp, back to school celebration, and Christmas bowling party. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OCJ Kids never stopped working to provide essential supplies to these children.

On December 11 – 12, OCJ Kids will host the annual One Bright Star Christmas Bowling Party. Over the two days, more than 500 foster children and teens will have

I

n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work.

Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer.

Technological innovation and scaled-up production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow.

And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information

Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year.

Peoria Unified News You Can Use PEORIA UNIFIED APPROVES HIGHER PAY FOR DISTRICT TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES On October 14, the Peoria Unified Governing Board approved a higher pay schedule for employees in the Transportation Department. The higher pay schedule impacts bus drivers, transportation coordinators, dispatchers, route specialists, transportation supervisors, mechanics, and route assistants who have a commercial driver’s license.

The increase places Peoria Unified among the highest paying district for bus drivers in the Northwest Valley. The new pay schedule includes a $3.01 increase to the starting hourly rate, allowing Peoria Unified to offer more competitive pay for its transportation staff, increasing the rate to $17 an hour with up to ten years of experience at the point of hire, and an equivalent pay increase for current employees.

The district welcomes the pay increase while experiencing bus driver shortages and temporary cancellations in routes.

Although the district is built on a tradition of excellence with attractive work schedules and competitive benefits, Peoria Unified has about 20 vacant bus driver positions. The higher hourly rate will allow Peoria Unified to attract and retain high-quality employees to safely and efficiently transport students to and from school.

The higher pay schedule follows a recently approved stipend to attract and retain school bus drivers, approved by

Peoria Unified’s Governing Board. Those hired before September 30 received a onetime $1,750 stipend and those hired from this point forward will receive a pro-rated amount.

PUSD APPOINTS NEW DISTRICT CHIEF TECHNOLOGY AND OPERATIONS OFFICER The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board approved the appointment of Kevin Molino as the district’s new Chief Technology and Operations Officer at the October 14 Board Meeting. Molino will take over for Mr. John Gay, who retired from Peoria Unified on Friday, October 15. Molino began his new role on October 20.

Molino brings more than 25 years of diverse information technology experience in the military, corporate, and education sectors. He joins Peoria Unified from the Cartwright School District where he served as the Director of IT and Chief Technology Officer for the past five years. Prior to his role in Cartwright, Molino held a variety of roles in Peoria Unified from 2001 through 2017, including director of network operations, chief technology officer, IT director, network and systems engineer, technical analyst, desktop support technician, and helpdesk analyst.

Molino graduated from Arizona State University and holds a bachelor’s degree in small business and economics. He also holds several IT and information security certifications. Instilling Gratitude in Kids

hanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s a universal time when many take an extra moment to count their blessings, because truth be told, we often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. I’m always looking for ways to instill positive vibes in my sons—values of kindness, and ways to express and acknowledge gratitude. Here are six ideas that families can implement to bring more “warm and fuzzy” into the house this fall.

CREATE A KINDNESS CHART Every time your kids go above and beyond—unasked or prompted—place a sticker on the chart.

(Examples can include helping with household tasks or being supportive of a sibling or friend.) For every ten acts of kindness, give them a small prize, and once they get 100, throw a pizza party (or a similar fun prize). The best part about this is it’s a joint effort among siblings, not a competition. It’s not him versus her chart—it’s a shared chart, so they’re working together to be awarded for good deeds.

RECITE POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS It’s so important to teach your kids words of affirmation early on. Positive affirmations give a boost in confidence for young children, which helps them develop a positive selfimage. Words of affirmation are also a great way to help kids cope when they’re feeling down, upset, scared, or overwhelmed. You

There are plenty of gratitude journals aimed for young kids with fill-in-the-blank prompts, making it a simple nightly task. In fact, my oldest and I have a mom-and-son journal that we take turns filling in and reading. It’s a very special activity that we do, and I plan on doing it with each of my boys when they’re ready.

Journaling is a positive habit that gives kids a safe place to express their inner thoughts and emotions.

HAND WRITE CARDS This is simple, sweet, and easy. Especially with all that’s going on in the world, have your kids write a hand-written card to someone they care about or even someone that they don’t know who does good (such as a police officer or fire fighter). Teach them that kind, unexpected words go a long way, and can make someone’s day.

Consider it a good time to send “thank you” notes to teachers, law enforcement, and extended family.

COMPLIMENT Our Thanksgiving ritual is to go around the table and say what we’re thankful for, but this annual practice is nice

to incorporate more often. Designate a weekly night to pay each member of your family a compliment. This will teach your kids to accept compliments with grace and give them with sincerity. For parents, some complimentary ideas for our kids include: complimenting our child’s character, their contributions to the family, when they achieve something new, their sense of self, and steps toward a long-term goal.

REFLECT ON YOUR BLESSINGS To be the best for our children, we must strive for being our best selves—so this one is for you, mom, dad and other caregivers. This month, in addition to reflecting on what you’re thankful for, reflect on what your kids have and continue to teach you. Being a parent is tough and it’s not always easy to be positive and peppy.

For example, my children have taught me a wealth of patience, true priorities, the art of affection, resilience, to connect with my inner child, and of course, unconditional love.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

MOVIE REVIEWS No Time To Die

Titane A father reunites with his missing son after a series of murders grips the country. There’s no easy way to describe Titane without massively giving it away.

A dark horror/comedy mixture, Titane is about desire, murder, deception, and how all of these don’t really mix. Which is ironic as, to me at least, they go together for a very skillfully crafted picture with nightmarish editing and visuals.

It would be almost absurd if director Julia Ducournau didn’t just totally sell it, making you laugh but still cringe and be terrified. Watch at your own risk.

which turn to anger, and spill out into disaster. Curtis is still great as always, but the supporting cast steals the show, all processing the situation in their own way. David Gordon Green shoots the film in a way that fits the hectic tone of the movie, getting nightmarish by the end, and it’s incredible. It’s a harsh movie that becomes tragic, entertaining but strangely still thoughtful.

After a betrayal causes him to go off the grid, James Bond returns for a final mission against a dangerous new enemy. No Time To Die not only is the end of the Craig era of Bond, but it also feels like the curtain call of the type of blockbuster filmmaking it was born into. Compared to other films of its type today, the classical filmmaking that director Cary Fukunaga brings is refreshing and exciting, with the pacing, energy and lush color palette giving something for every 007 fan. Craig is arguably at his most invested in the role, looking relaxed but still has the edge to a character who has been doing this for 15 years. Supporting characters, new and old, are almost all great and bounce off him well, aside from, unfortunately, the main villain Safin. A thin motivation combined with a miscast Rami Malek can really put the movie to a hard stop.

Other than that, though, it’s a great final chapter for the actor.

Eddie Brock and Venom’s relationship is tested as an infamous serial killer breaks out of prison and bonds with a new symbiote. Venom was a terrible studio-mandated movie, barely stitchedtogether in the edit bay and tonally confused as to whether it wants to be a sci-fi action movie or a buddy comedy movie. Let There Be Carnage is confident, a sort of distorted romcom that doesn’t overstay its welcome and is intentionally funny. Hardy’s chemistry with himself (he plays Brock and voices Venom) is the heart of the film, giving the movie a much-needed core that was missing in the first film. I also appreciate how director Andy Serkis, despite a limited background in helming action, does up the ante on the action scenes, particularly the more CG-focused fights.

Unfortunately, the film is holstered by a miscast Woody Harrelson, in a performance that comes off as more adorable than terrifying. Still, the film is an improvement in almost every way from the first Venom movie.
