83 MARKETPLACE COMES TO THE VALLEY’S WEST SIDE
By Molly Cerreta Smith
AS YOU UNDOUBTEDLY KNOW, 83 MARKETPLACE IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF 83RD AVENUE AND HAPPY VALLEY ROAD. Developed by locally owned and operated MDC Land Development, the center promises to bring another level of dining, retail and service options to the upper west side. The site, which was purchased by MDC Land Development in 2015, has long been in the making to bring elevated dining and shopping to the area. The concept is designed to offer the neighborhood an upscale family-friendly center with non-chain options. “People in this area are starving for chef-driven restaurants,” says Shari Cashman, director of marketing and operations for MDC Land Development. “That is our primary focus and that has been our focus since day one.” While Cashman admits those types of tenants are much harder to secure, they refuse to steer from their original concept.
In total, the center will feature 41,200 square feet of unique high-end indoor/ outdoor restaurants, retailers and services such as Urban Italian, Dean Proper and Heartland Dental. Phase 1 is currently going up, with Phase 2 to follow. Upon completion, the center will have a central courtyard and Cashman reveals she has a vision for the restaurants to have large shaded patios with twinkling lights, though each one will likely have its own unique spin on its patio design and concept. The center is designed to be pedestrian friendly and geared toward the younger families in the area that are looking for really cool places to go. “The median age for our demographic is 36 to 37,” says Cashman. “We want to target the female market with a yoga studio or boutique fitness studio, a salon, and a wine bar. We’re trying to bring the Scottsdale-style amenities and offerings to this area.” In addition to elevated offerings, 83 Marketplace is strategically located — Happy Valley Road serves as the first major artery
north of the Loop 101 to connect from the I-17 to the Loop 303. While Cashman notes that as more people are moving north, they are realizing that moving northwest to North Peoria is less expensive. “The benefit to the area is that people are beginning to see the value — you get a lot more bang for your buck out here and that makes sense for families in their 30s and 40s with young kids,” she adds.
what we are achieving and we are so excited about the final product and the level of tenants that we are introducing to north Peoria,” she adds. “We’re just a small two-person company that is dedicated to seeing our original concept through and sticking to our guns on the type of center we want to create for the neighborhood.”
The area is growing significantly and showcases positive demographics including 6,000 new rooftops coming in. “When people move out here, they realize the value - and then they get the benefit of having more disposable income in which to frequent better and independently owned shops and restaurants,” Cashman says.
That “small two-person company” comes with some real clout, however. Cavan has more than 30 years of real estate development and investment experience under his belt and specializes in the acquisition and deposition of investment real estate across the Southwest. Cashman carries with her more than 25 years of operational, strategic marketing, public relations, and management experience.
Cashman says the company, which consists of just she and Cavan, are excited to be able to offer residents that higher level of shops and residents…. Though it hasn’t always been easy. “We are really proud of
MDC Land Development is currently accepting tenants for Phase 2 of 83 Marketplace and those interested may reach Cashman directly at info@ mdcavanland.com. For more, visit www.mdcavanland.com.
She reveals, “If the community wanted a McDonald’s and an AutoZone, we could have filled the center already, but that’s not what we want to give the community with this center. That’s not how we want to build our company and that’s not the reputation we want.” Mark Cavan, president of MDC Land Development, who used to live in the Westwing neighborhood of Peoria but often frequented Market Street at DC Ranch for its vibrant culture and original tenants, wanted to bring a similar concept to the west side with 83 Marketplace. Initially the three parcels actually had three separate owners, making the acquisition of the entire nine-acre property a lengthy process. It took more than a year alone to simply get through all the approval processes and finally in October 2016, they were able to close on the parcel. 4 • November 2019 • UPPER WESTSIDER

AS NORTH PEORIA CONTINUES TO GROW AND BECOME A MORE DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE, DINE, SHOP, ENJOY ENTERTAINMENT AND MORE, THE DEMAND FOR CONVENIENT WAYS TO ACCESS THE CITY INCREASES. With that, recent news of a new road construction project has been announced. The Peoria City Council has recently approved an agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation for the design and development of the Loop 303 Interchange at Jomax Road. The project is set to begin in the spring of 2020 with a completion date slated for winter of 2021. The city will be responsible for paying the construction costs to the state, which are estimated to be approximately $515,102. However, if the project goes over budget, the city is also required to pay the state for those costs. Peoria will also take on the responsibility of maintenance of the Loop 303 Interchange upon completion of the project. On its end, the state of Arizona is slated to prepare design plans, specifications and any additional documents needed for bidding as well as secure any and all necessary permits for the construction and other work needed in their right of way.
tie in with the city of Peoria’s future extension of Jomax Road; and building a new bridge over the Beardsley Canal.”
The traffic interchange, bridges for the main lines and concrete paved surface for the paved surface under the bridges are included in ADOT’s project design as well, and the agreement between ADOT and the city also includes a two-inch PVC electrical conduit in a joint utility trench that will allow for new lighting as well as a new traffic signal at the intersection of Vistancia Boulevard and Jomax Road, and a 36-inch diameter steel casing under the interchange that will accommodate a future water main that will run from east to west. According to ADOT, residents can expect shoulder closures along the Loop 303 during construction and notes that temporary single-lane closures might be necessary. At least one lane of travel in each direction will be maintained during construction. For updates, www.azdot.gov. While construction can sometimes be a hassle for travelers, this latest development is a long-term solution to the growth and development anticipated for north Peoria. In the long run, residents and visitors to the area will likely be thankful for this temporary inconvenience!
As of right now, the Loop 303 includes two general purpose lanes at the Jomax Road alignment. However, because there is not a bridge over Jomax Road, traffic along the Loop 303 has to depart from the main alignment to travel along the future on and off ramps. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) initiated a study along a northwest valley area of the Loop 303 to “address how future growth in the region would impact the highway,” according to the ADOT website. “The study will examine the benefits of adding a third general purpose lane in each direction between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways; construction of a new traffic interchange to

ARIZONA LAW GIVES VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE A NEW HOPE By Robert E. Pastor t can take decades for survivors of child sexual abuse to share their secret and break the silence. Arizona law now recognizes that victims of sexual abuse need time to process and understand what happened to them.
conclusively shows people with a history of childhood sexual abuse have an increased risk of major depression, suicide attempt, alcohol or drug dependence, social anxiety, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, rape after the age of 18 and divorce throughout their lives.
Adults who have suffered child sexual abuse may experience a variety of symptoms throughout their lives or in chronic episodes. Survivors of sexual abuse often suffer deep seeded shame, guilt and self-blame that often leads to depression and anxiety. Survivors of abuse may develop a belief that they caused the sexual abuse or that they deserved the abuse. No child causes or deserves to be sexually abused. These beliefs may lead to self-destructing or sabotaging relationships. As children and as adults, survivors of sexual abuse may experience intrusive or recurring thoughts, nightmares or even flashbacks about the abuse. Research
Elliot Nelson et al., Association Between Self-Reported Childhood Sexual Abuse and Adverse Psychosocial Outcomes: Results from a Twin Study, 59 Archives of General Psychiatry, 139, 139-145 (2002). Studies also show child sexual abuse can lead to sexual dysfunctions, sexual compulsion, confusion and struggles over gender and sexual identity, homophobia, problems with intimacy, guilt, self-blame, low self-esteem, negative self-images, and increased anger. The complexities surrounding child sexual abuse and the trauma that victims endure is just one reason why Arizona changed the statute of limitations for victims of child sexual abuse. A statute of limitations is like a legal stopwatch that counts down the time to file criminal charges or a civil lawsuit. There are often different statutes of limitations for different types of cases. It is important to know when the clock starts ticking, when the clock stops ticking and whether anything restarts the clock. The new law in Arizona gives victims of child sexual abuse more time to take legal action and for some victims, it restarts the clock - but for a limited time.
child sexual abuse. Under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse have until December 31, 2020. It does not matter how long it has been or how old a victim is, under the new law, victims of child sexual abuse can take back their voice and seek the justice they deserve. By taking action against perpetrators and the institutions that covered for them, victims can expose perpetrators and expose the cover up. Civil actions will also protect other children because these institutions now know that they are not above the law.

HI, MY NAME IS...
PROFILE ON LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR: Matt Russell MY COMPANY AND TITLE IS…. I am the founder and owner of Novas Labs. We produce and manufacture Wellphora, the well-known, high-quality CBD products that you find at your local farmers markets, retail outlets and at Wellphora.com. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… awakening to my teen boys playing piano or guitar at 6 a.m. before they head to school. I split my time between two careers; I’m either heading into the Fire Station for my 48-hour shift or into to the lab to formulate CBD products and/or meet with our wholesale clients. Nights are equally hectic shuttling kids (some of whom don’t even belong to us) to their after-school activities. Weekends are filled with juggling three calendars of kids’ events. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/ WORKING IN THE UPPER WEST SIDE AREA IS… The people. I was born and raised in Glendale/ Peoria and always run into friends I’ve made through the years no matter where we go. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Dr. Pepper! I have given up this wonderful, delicious, sugary soda many times over for a diet or a few

months break, but I love it and I keep going back. Dr. Pepper with crushed ice in the foam cup from Circle K is a drink from heaven for sure!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a Firefighter. I was able to fulfill that dream and have spent the last 21+ years serving and protecting the citizens in and around the City of Peoria. As with others who have physically demanding occupations, injuries have led me to begin shortening my Fire Department career and begin reinventing myself professionally. I have been able to leverage my knowledge and background of 24 years as an emergency medical provider, Toxicology Paramedic, and Hazardous Materials Technician, into a new career of engineering and manufacturing high-quality, hemp-based CBD products. This allows me to keep helping our citizens through another avenue with greater reach.
THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… Fly fishing on a river in Southwest Montana, family in tow, with the cool breeze and pine trees surrounding me. If I had a cold craft beer and a meal at the Gallatin River House, that would be the cherry on the sundae! I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… A program that will bring Wellphora CBD to First Responders, Veterans, Teachers, and Nurses all at a special discounted rate. These people are the heroes and backbone of our communities who sacrifice their lives, sleep, health, and time with their families for the safety and wellness of others. It is a passion of mine to be able to give back.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My wife Stephanie is the single most important person that motivates me to follow and achieve my dreams. KIDS’ CORNER
GIVING BACK:
THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING KIDS HOW TO BE THANKFUL AND GENEROUS By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
T
his time of the year, we stop to reflect on all the things that make us thankful. A roof over our head when so many are homeless, food in our stomachs when so many go hungry, and the love of friends and family when so many are alone. As parents, it’s so important to pass on our values to our children, and help them understand why we should be thankful for what we have, even when life has difficulties. There are many ways to encourage your kids to be thankful, but one of the best ways to show them why is by giving back to others who are in need. Here are some ways that you and your family can embrace the spirit of giving thanks and give back to people who are less fortunate than you.

DONATIONS AND GIVING It’s important for kids to feel like they are helping when you talk about giving back and being thankful. One way they can help is by donating old books, toys and clothes, and by helping you give items to people less fortunate than you. Let your kids help you pick out the items to donate and pack them up, then take them with you to drop off the donated items. Here are a few organizations that collect special holiday donations in the Valley: • Salvation Army Christmas Angels • Toys for Tots • Food Banks and collection boxes at grocery stores VOLUNTEERING You can set an example of generosity for your kids by taking time to volunteer with organizations that help others. Donating your time is a great way to actively demonstrate how it feels to help people in need, and will let kids gain a sense of pride that they are helping out. Here are a few suggestions for places to volunteer your time: • Local Food Banks • Nearby nursing homes and retirement communities • Community clean-up activities • Homeless shelters • Local churches PARTICIPATING IN EVENTS AND FUNDRAISERS Another great way to get kids involved is to participate in charitable events and fundraisers as a family. Non-profit organizations hold walks, fundraisers, and events to raise money for charities all year long. There are really too many events to list here, but you can easily search by organization, date, or cause to find the activities that will work best for your family. Consider cause, distance, cost or fundraising requirements, time of day, and the day of the week when you do your research. There are endless ways to give back and tons of places in the Valley of the Sun that need your help. Do your homework, get your kids involved, and make it a point to give back and be thankful this year. We at Ladybug’s Blog (www.LadybugsBlog. com) are sincerely thankful for you, our readers, and for the opportunity to share information and tips for doing great activities with your kids all year round here in the great state of Arizona!

next fun event around the corner, rather than dwelling on what they are dealing with in the present. All events are focused on the whole family to prevent siblings from being unintentionally overlooked, bring families together that understand their journey, and are offered at no cost to families.
“After the initial shock, the child life specialist at the hospital brought us a binder detailing organizations, resources and support groups,” Tabatha said. “She emphasized that our family should join HopeKids.”
Shortly after joining HopeKids, Tabatha couldn’t believe how incredible it was to meet another family with a daughter near the same age as Raven and a similar diagnosis. The two families met through HopeKids’ online forum and made a point for the two girls to meet once Raven was out of the hospital.
“You would be hard-pressed to find anyone close to us who has not heard about HopeKids and the impact it has had on our life through this difficult journey,” Tabatha said. “Seeing and meeting other families through HopeKids has provided a lot of comfort in our hardest days.”
“When Lily and Raven met for the first time, they pointed to each other’s nearly bald heads and hugged,” Tabatha said. “We all knew we had met someone else who gets it.”
Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 children cope with life-threatening medical conditions. These conditions affect the entire family with more than half of parents suffering from acute stress disorders and 80 perce of siblings having elevated levels of posttraumatic stress.
HopeKids provides ongoing events and activities for families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition, such as cancer. Each month, they schedule a variety of sporting events, live performances, museum visits or other types of fun activities for the whole family. “Raven spent much of the time since

“We love attending HopeKids events now as a family,” Tabatha said. “Spending this quality time together is important while Raven continues treatment for a couple more years.” Numerous studies show that hope can increase one’s overall ability to cope. HopeKids understands they are not a cure for these illnesses, but they believe hope is a powerful medicine. HopeKids Arizona began in 2001 and currently serves more than 1,400 families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition. Visit www. hopekids.org.

AMAZING LASH STUDIO: bringing the next level of beauty to the upper west side
P
rior to opening her own Amazing Lash Studio just over a year ago in Peoria at 24870 North Lake Pleasant Parkway, Margie Bahm spent much of her profession in industries that might be considered the opposite of beauty. For 25 years, Bahm held a corporate role as a national trainer and demo director for the pet food industry within the Mars conglomerate. When she met her husband eight years ago and national travel became less desirable, she decided she had “done her time in the corporate world.” She took a brief (and well-deserved) hiatus, then jumped into another passion of hers at the time — home health care. She managed a team for Caring.com as her own mother was in memory care. Meanwhile, another passion was brewing as Bahm enjoyed the personal “obsession” of getting lash extensions. “I was getting them done by a young girl right out of high school who started in a small one-room studio and did them herself,” she reveals. “I watched her business grow to the point where she opened her own spa and I could see how lashes could develop into a fast-growing sector of the beauty industry.” For convenience, Bahm began looking for a new studio… for her lash obsession, not as a career! “I wanted extensions, I was not looking to buy a business that day,” she clarifies. But as she was laying on the

By Molly Cerreta Smith table, she began speaking to the franchisee of an Amazing Lash Studio, which has its corporate headquarters right here in the valley… and Bahm began thinking about it. Soon after, she decided that owning her own Amazing Lash Studio was her next professional direction. As for the location, she naturally decided upon her own neighborhood in Westwing. “I knew what this area of Peoria could do,” she reveals. “I knew this area was growing — there is so much new growth — and the demographic is higher here.” However, Bahm did not sign on with Amazing Lash until she had found the perfect location. She knew she wanted to be in the Target center where her studio exists today, but nothing was vacant except for one very large parcel. As her mother became increasingly sick, Bahm put her search on hold while she went to California to spend some time caring for her. After her mother, whom she was very close with, passed, Bahm admitted she doubted whether or not she should really continue to pursue the idea of opening her own Amazing Lash Studio. Upon her return to the valley, she learned that the space she’d been coveting had been divided into three parts. “It was like a heavenly gift,” she says. “The timing was perfect and that is really the beginning of the story,” says Bahm. But beyond just building upon her passion, she says, “I knew I wanted to be a hands-on
owner and to really build a culture.” Thanks to her corporate background as well as her own life experiences, she had the skills to hire, train, manage customer service — and could help a team of young ladies apply their own skills to succeed. As a teen, Bahm had a full college scholarship when her life took a turn and she became a single parent. “I worked very hard to support myself and my child,” she reveals. “I always go back to that because I understand what it’s like to be a struggling single parent.” When it comes to her 22 employees, many of whom are millennials and in the same boat she was once in, she reveals that she is very empathetic because she has walked in similar shoes. “I am far from being a micro-manager. I like to empower women and give them the power to make their own decisions,” she says. For those reasons, she feels that this career was a calling for her. “I draw on a lot of my experiences and my skills that I can share with them and build a culture that thrives. And the girls here are really amazing and highly skilled.” Bahm also offers her staff initial and ongoing training during their employment. When it comes to what Bahm attributes to the popularity of lash extensions, she points to several things, saying, “Lash extensions offer an instant gratification for women of all ages, and they help you feel young

and beautiful.” She says that her studio’s average demographic is women over the age of 39, with a good base of her membership in their 50s, as with age many women’s lashes don’t grow as much and often become brittle and less full. Because there are a lot retirement communities in the neighborhood, she also has a solid base of senior clients. As her business continues to grow, Bahm says she will offer one-time application of “special occasion lashes” for girls going to homecoming and other events. She says lash extensions also help those who have lost their hair and lashes to cancer get their look (and confidence) back through these services. Amazing Lash Studio is a membership-based business with an initial full set starting at just $89.99, with a one-refill credit membership available for $69.99 per month and a two-refill membership for $119.99 per month. She also offers variety when it comes to application including single set featherweight classics, as well as add-ons such as the 3D fuller extensions and 6D, which creates a fuller look and a darker lash line. The company also offers pre-service consultation regarding length and style to ensure their clients get results they love.
yourupperwestsider.com
Bahm’s approach to business is clearly succeeding — Amazing Lash Studio was named Best Eyelash Extensions in Arizona Foothills Best of Our Valley 2019, and at the corporation’s recent national sales conference, her franchise was awarded “Top Performing Studio in the First 12 Months of Business” in the U.S. She has approximately 750 members already, in comparison to the average 350 members that most studios gain in their first year of business.
As the company continues to grow in membership, Bahm is excited to reveal additional services newly added to their repertoire including brow waxing, shaping and tinting, facial waxing, and lash lift with tint and strip lashes for one-time occasions.
for the organization during which many members donated beautiful items to this cause.
Bahm doesn’t take her community connection lightly. She has partnered with Dress for Success, an organization that helps empower women to achieve economic independence through support and development tools as well as professional attire to help them thrive in work and life. “This group is very important to us because it helps women who are trying to get back on their feet,” she says. Her studio recently had a clothing drive

ASK THE PLUMBING EXPERT
WYMAN PLUMBING ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS
Q. Do water softeners need regular maintenance? A. Most water softeners are fully automatic and need little-to-no maintenance outside of keeping salt inside the brine tank. Although you can use any brand or type of softener salt, the pellet salt makes a cleaner brine and the Solar Salt (sun dried crystals) reduces the possibility of a salt bridge. Pouring the salt in a slope inside the brine tank and not flattening it or covering the water completely is best in order to help keep a rock-hard salt bridge from forming. When the dry salt gets to the water level, simply add one bag in a sloping method. Although your softener may appear to be running, the resin inside may not be doing a good job of softening your water. We always recommend an annual check-up to make sure the programming is still correct, and the water is still soft by using a hardness test to check the water. We include this service with our yearly Reverse Osmosis filter change package. Outside routine check-ups, there are certainly instances when your softener could require periodic service, such as if you notice changes in your water quality, your softener salt levels stay the same from day to day, or you are getting spots on your dishes. Q. My shower has a consistent drip when the water is turned off and/or only gets one temperature. How do I fix it? A. It is very common for a shower cartridge to not function properly due to wear and tear. This is a part inside the shower valve that controls the flow of water to the showerhead. The cartridge is connected to a single handle that turns to allow the blending of hot and cold
water. There are several signs of a cartridge needing to be replaced. (1) You have a drip or running water when you turn the handle to the off position. (2) You have a drip from the shower handle itself. (3) You feel the handle getting increasingly more difficult to turn (4) You are only getting hot water or only getting cold water.
To repair, identify the brand and model of cartridge specific to your trim kit so that the cartridge can be replaced. Once you have the part, the water will need to be turned off to the house so the handle can be removed, and the cartridge can be pulled out for replacement and lubricated inside the valve body. Q. My water bill was extremely high last month. How do I check for leaks? A. Typically, extremely high bills are due to irrigation, water main or slab leaks. A plumbing contractor will isolate many valves around the property and check the city water meter to determine where the leaks are coming from. To check for a main water line leak (between the meter and your home), you should slowly turn off your main water shut-off valve and check your city water meter to make sure it is not spinning (or counting up). With the water off to your home, it should not be counting up or spinning. If it is, there is a good chance you have a leak and a plumbing contractor should be called. Be careful if your main shut-off is a gate-style valve or older – if they are not used fairly often, there is always a chance it could break and fail to turn off. We always recommend replacing old or gate-style valves with a quarter turn ball valve.

REAL ESTATE
WHY BUYING SMALL MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE By Frank May
I
n a day where we can get whatever we want with a quick shout to “Alexa,” is there even a need to have a brick and mortar store in your neighborhood? You bet there is! Don’t get me wrong, Alexa can tell a great joke, and Siri can get you all the information you need, but what they can’t give you is a face-to-face response. I have taken advantage of the technology-driven era we live in and love the strides we have made in the past decade or two, but I still love to walk into my bank to deposit a check or make my way down the aisles of the grocery store and sit down at a restaurant.
You might be asking, “How does this have anything to do with real estate?” The answer is simple. When the businesses around you are thriving, it makes for an area where people want to live, and that helps home values. The more connected the community, the more likely local businesses will succeed because you want to support your local area. Not only are these businesses helping the community, often, they are also your neighbors who have leveraged everything to make their dream a success.
THINK BIG SHOP SMALL SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
It brings me to my point of why brick and mortar stores are always going to be essential to us. When I shop, I want to touch a product and see it in a visual surrounding that I will never get online. The most critical piece of the shopping experience is the ability to talk to a salesperson or shop owners about their knowledge of a product and whether it is a good purchase for you. A small business owner or salesperson wants you to be happy with your purchase and give you a reason for coming back.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS
The Upper Westside is becoming more established, with some neighborhoods starting to mature while others are just beginning. The local businesses mirror the continued growth in the community. For example, after being open for a little over a year, Amazing Lash Studio just won Top Performing Studio in the COUNTRY! They won because of the support of the community, their excellent customer service, and finding that ideal location in 85383. One of the other benefits to brick and mortar shops is the social factor. If we sit on our computer all day working/shopping and not talking to anyone
The temperatures are dropping, making it an incredible time of the year in Peoria. Now is the perfect time to get outside in your community and explore the events that are happening all around you. November 30 is Shop Small Saturday, which was established ten years ago by American Express for the sole purpose of supporting your local businesses. These mom and pop shops cannot compete with the enormous Mega-Low-Marts on Black Friday. Why not show your support on Shop Small Saturday and see what your local businesses have to offer you? I bet there is a great deal waiting for you and a possible connection with a shop owner/neighbor who will appreciate your support. Who knows, you might become a local business owner yourself valuing the help of your community next year. Frank May grew up in the valley, graduating from Northwest Christian School and NAU. He is a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty and has been helping both buyers and sellers for 18 years.

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS By AD Beal
IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON
A police detective tries to figure out a series of similar murders that occur every nine years. Combining sci-fi with more grounded genres like crime can lead to mixed results, but In the Shadow of the Moon is done in a way that is both creative and satisfying. Director Jim Mickle gives a unique look and feel to each decade the film is set. Boyd Holbrook gives one of his best performances as the lead, balancing obsession, sadness and determination in a great way. Michael C. Hall is also enjoyable as his brother-in-law who starts as the “jerk sibling” but slowly becomes more empathetic over time. A little more development behind the killer in question would have been ideal, however the film is still a satisfying piece of pulp with a new take on the genre. *NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.
GEMINI MAN
A retiring assassin is on the run from an organization using a younger clone of himself to try to kill him. Ang Lee gives us an exciting look as to what the future of cinema will be. While I can’t speak for the high frame rate 3D (the viewing was in 2D), the de-aging work is well done. Aside from
one scene, the young Will Smith looks lifelike and highlights the real potential this technology has. The action is also a lot of fun. DP Dion Beebe, working with Lee, captures the intensity and high speed of each scene, including some great one takes. The script, however, is another story. It felt jumbled, thin and has clearly been rewritten multiple times by different screenwriters since the 90s. A good example of an interesting idea that is executed poorly.
IN THE TALL GRASS
A brother and sister get lost in a field of grass searching for a young boy, only to discover the field is more than what it seems.

In the Tall Grass is a prime example of why some stories should stay in written form. You can only have people walk into grass, wander around and scream for each other for so long before one becomes bored. If the characters have nothing beyond basic traits (concerned brother, mother-to-be, creepy kid, etc.), you have a bigger issue at hand. Great photography, including some interesting incorporations of CGI, can only get you so far. The film doesn’t even have much of the viciousness of the original novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. Of the numerous King works that have yet to be adapted, this is one that was unneeded.

*NOTE: This film is only available on Netflix.

FIXIN’ TO EAT MEAL PREP
By Just Your Average Joe
T
his month I was asked to do a review on Fixin’ To Eat in Peoria. As usual I did a little research prior to heading out and the first thing I learned was they are not a restaurant. So how would I do a restaurant review on “not a restaurant?” With a little more digging I found out that I was in for a treat. Tonight, I was going to get to enjoy all of the great food I would normally get eating out, but from the comfort of my cushy couch! Meal prep companies have been popping up around the valley for years. The trend is typically based around healthy or specialty diet plans. However, some like Fixin’ To Eat decided to buck the trend and simply provide great tasting meals for busy families. There are a few different ways to work with them. First is the DIY theme - schedule a time, go down and put your own ingredients together (yes, you follow their recipe) and take home your meals to eat or freeze for a later date. Second, and the way I did it, is to order ahead (online or by phone), they prep it and you just swing in and pick it up. The third option is to order online, and have it delivered to your home. What are your choices? The current menu is always available online but make sure to check in regularly for new items. Some of my favorites are
the Apple Pie Enchiladas, Coconut Curry, Fresca Seafood Tacos, Honey Mustard Chicken and Italian Stuffed Peppers. For my choice tonight I went with the Garlic Rosemary Steak and a side of creamy mashed potatoes. I picked this up and took it straight home for cooking, so I did not have to thaw anything out. Following the cooking instructions, I was able to bring the meat to a perfect medium rare. Was it flavorful? Absolutely! The seasoning was perfect and enhanced the natural taste of the meat. The potatoes were packed full of “wow” and complimented the steak. The portions for each were more than enough to fill me up. I can honestly say the meal exceeded my expectations. Price wise, you simply cannot beat this.
I am out visiting restaurants throughout the valley on a regular basis so eating at home is not something I think about a lot. Part of it is the luck of this gig, but mainly its laziness on my part. The thought of having to go to the grocery store, purchase ingredients, and then cook it without destroying my kitchen sounds draining. That being said, this was incredibly easy! Factor that in with the costs involved with eating out or the waste in spoiled food each month from the grocery store, Fixin’ To Eat is a bargain!

GETAWAY
Visiting SOUTHERN AR IZONA
HISTORY, NATURE, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
J
ust north of the Mexico border and a bit south of Phoenix you can find a part of the state that is steeped in history, beautiful terrain, and fascinating sights to visit. Southern Arizona is a great place for a weekend getaway, and an ideal location to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourists and locals heading to locations further north. The gateway to Southern Arizona is Tucson, which is a destination unto itself, but a little further south you can find many interesting small towns, national and state parks, historic sites, and local artists and wineries. Here is a list of some of our favorite Southern Arizona towns and the must-see places to visit when you go. BENSON The first stop on our list is Benson, Arizona. A tiny town of about 5,000 people, Benson is the first major stop on the highway past Tucson. The town was founded as a railroad terminal and a stagecoach station, serving as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way through the southern part of Arizona. It’s historical status as a “pit stop” for tourists passing through remains to this day. One of Benson’s key features, however, is that it is also the home of Kartchner Caverns State Park. This world-class Arizona State Park features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. The
By Jill “MamaBug” Frier park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course, touring the caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance as tours book up quickly. SIERRA VISTA A bit further down the road, past Kartchner Caverns on Highway 90, you’ll find the town of Sierra Vista. Much closer to the border of Mexico, Sierra Vista is a larger community with a population of around 44,000. The Hummingbird Capital of the World, Sierra Vista has a more temperate climate than Phoenix, with beautiful mountain views, big skies, and tons of Old West history. As one of the key settings for many of the popular Joanna Brady novels by J. A. Jance, this idyllic area is a fantastic place to enjoy the outdoors and hike one of the many Southern Arizona “sky islands.” Sierra Vista is also adjacent to the historic U.S. Army base, Fort Huachuca. Constructed in 1877, Fort Huachuca was one of several forts established to protect southern Arizona against the legendarily ferocious Chiricahua Apaches, led by Geronimo. It was also headquarters of the famed 10th Calvary, also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” The fort is still an active Army base today, but you can

visit the historic district and see many of the notable Old West structures still standing. TOMBSTONE One of the most well-known small towns in Southern Arizona is Tombstone, located down Highway 80, south of Benson. Labeled “the town too tough to die,” Tombstone is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. With a population of less than 1,500 people, Tombstone is still one of the most popular places for Arizona tourists to visit and experience a true taste of western history. Visitors can see a reenactment of the showdown at the O.K. Corral, visit Boot Hill Cemetery, or stop in the historic Rose Tree Inn Museum. The place with the worst reputation in Tombstone, widely believed to be the wildest and meanest place in town, is the Birdcage Theater. At least 16 deadly gunfights took place in the former saloon, brothel and gambling hall, and legend has it that at least 26 people died there between 1881 and 1889. If you’re looking for a trip to one of the most infamous haunted hot spots in Arizona, this is it. BISBEE Further south down Highway 80, about 10 miles north of the Mexican border, is the small town of Bisbee. A cultural
mecca for artists, the historic mining town is home to about 5,600 people with charmingly restored Victorian homes, galleries, museums, and historic sites throughout the town. The Queen Mine was one of the richest copper mines in history and is still a popular spot for visitors. WILCOX One of our favorite stops as we travel further west on I-10 towards New Mexico is Wilcox. A small town of not quite 4,000 people, Wilcox is known as southern Arizona wine country. An agricultural oasis, the Wilcox area produces almost 75 percent of the grapes grown in Arizona, and grows more wine-making grapes than any other region in the state. This small railroad town is also the gateway to the Chiricahua National Monument, known for its fascinating rock formations and mountain trails. Located at the convergence of the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre, Sonoran Desert, and Chihuahuan Deserts, Chiricahua is one of most unique National Park sites to visit in the state. Southern Arizona is a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique, historical places and natural wonders to experience. Take some time to check out the local favorites in each town and be sure to check www.LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas for great places to getaway and visit in Arizona! yourupperwestsider.com
