CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE ON JOMAX PARKWAY, LOOP 303 TO VISTANCIA BOULEVARD In a recent e-newsletter for the Mesquite District, Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher shared that construction is complete for the Jomax Parkway, Loop 303 to Vistancia Boulevard project. Improvements include the construction of a new four-lane segment of Jomax Road from the Loop 303 Jomax traffic interchange, currently under construction by ADOT, to a new signalized intersection as part of this project that was constructed at Vistancia Boulevard. Locals should note that while the Jomax Parkway project is complete, the traffic signal will not be activated or Jomax Parkway opened for travel until the ADOT construction of the traffic interchange at the Loop 303 is completed this winter.

LOCAL VETERANS WELCOME AT WEEKLY COFFEE MEETING The Peoria Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee (MAC) would like to invite local veterans to a weekly coffee meeting at Haymaker (Thunderbird location at 8706 W. Help the City Define New District Boundaries THE CITY OF PEORIA HAS STARTED THE FEDERALLY MANDATED REDISTRICTING PROCESS TO REDRAW DISTRICT BOUNDARIES. Peoria must submit the proposed city council district boundaries by the end of 2021. New city council district boundaries will be in effect for the August and November 2022 elections. Although the delay in census data reporting will shorten the timeframe for the redistricting process this year, Peoria residents will have many opportunities to participate in the process.

Beginning this month, there will be in-person and virtual open house events to learn about the redistricting requirements and the online mapping software that will be used to help rebalance the city council districts.

Peoria’s Second Saturdays are Back!

THE CITY OF PEORIA IN PARTNERSHIP WITH STEVE LEVINE ENTERTAINMENT & PUBLIC RELATIONS (SLE) ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF SECOND SATURDAYS. This ongoing monthly event is free, family-friendly and takes place the second Saturday of each month starting October 9, 2021 through May 14, 2022.

Second Saturdays will take place on Jefferson Street and 83rd Avenue in Old Town Peoria from 5 to 9 p.m. Second Saturdays will differ each month in themes starting with October, The Great Pumpkin, which will kick off the series of events and the fall season.

With a changing lineup of activities and entertainment monthly, Second Saturdays will feature a night market curated with a mix of special vendors, outdoor games, art installations, pop-up restaurants from local gourmet chefs, as well as live music and a variety of performers.

Just Announced: Bourbon & Bones Chophouse and Bar to Open at 83 Marketplace

The new boutique steakhouse and bar location has the goal of opening by August or September of 2022, according to S. Barrett Rinzler, the founder and CEO of Square One Concepts, the full-service hospitality management and concept development firm that owns Bourbon & Bones.

Bourbon & Bones is a modern, upscale steakhouse and bar with a high-energy environment that, “Offers an extensive high-end spirits list with close to 600 bourbons, whiskeys and scotch bottles, a classic handcrafted cocktail program, and a selection of craft beers and fine wines, all with a modern twist,” according to the company. In addition to prestigious drinks, Bourbon & Bones also offers elegant dining with hand-selected cuts of prime beef, wagyu beef, fresh seafood, salads, and specialty desserts.

“Our goal with Bourbon & Bones is to deliver a fine dining experience that is also unpretentious in style,” says Rinzler. “We take great pride in what we’ve created here in Arizona with Bourbon & Bones, and we’re delighted to look to the future to serve Peoria and the Northwest Valley as well.”

The new Bourbon & Bones location will be a part of 83 Marketplace’s second phase of high-end retail and restaurant grand openings; with the first phase of businesses set to open this fall.

vital economic corridor. Expanding this section of I-17 will reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and strengthen public safety. Millions of Arizonans will benefit from I-17’s improved connectivity and reliability when this project is completed.”

For years, Arizona motorists, businesses and tourists have voiced their support for widening and improving I-17 north of the metro-Phoenix region to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow. This project will improve 23 miles of I-17, including 15 miles of roadway widening, two bridge replacements, one bridge deck replacement, 10 bridge widenings, and the installation of an eight-mile flex lane system — a new feature for Arizona’s highway system. Flex lanes are proven technology to help reduce congestion on I-17 during peak travel times and allow for traffic movement during emergency situations.

ADOT has begun contract negotiations, and, pending a final contract, anticipates design and construction will begin in 2022. Construction is expected to take approximately three years. Construction crews are aiming to minimize impacts to the traveling public while work is underway. On busy days, this stretch of Interstate 17 can see more than 50,000 drivers a day.

ADOT sought proposals from qualified developer teams interested in reconstructing the 23-mile section of this key commerce corridor. Three finalists were selected earlier this year to advance through the selection process. All three finalists were encouraged to use innovation and develop alternative concepts to deliver the best possible design, construction, operation, and maintenance strategy for the project.

The final cost will be determined after extensive contract negotiations.

“Arizonans are excited to see major improvements to Interstate 17 coming soon, and this news is an important step forward,” says Governor Doug Ducey. “I-17 is a critical link to northern Arizona communities and a myhyperlocalnews.com

The I-17 flex lanes will operate as a separate, two-lane roadway carrying one direction of traffic at a time depending on the greatest need along the steep, winding eight miles between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. For example, the flex lanes will be able to carry heavier northbound traffic on a Friday or heavy southbound traffic on a Sunday. Similarly, ADOT will be able to open the flex lanes to accommodate traffic anytime if a crash or other incident causes long delays. The flex lanes will be next to, but physically separated from southbound I-17 using concrete barriers. Access to the flex-lane entrances will be controlled by gates.

City News A NW Peoria Resident Seeks the Community’s Help to Launch a Health-Oriented Start-Up WITH AN OPTIMISTIC ATTITUDE AND A CAN-DO MENTALITY, NW PEORIA RESIDENT AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNER THANOU THAMMAVONGSA IS CROWDFUNDING FOR A CAUSE HE BELIEVES IN: A HEALTH-ORIENTED START-UP. Through his crowdfunding campaign, he hopes to launch Westy’s Organic Kitchen & Juice to give his community healthier eating options.

The crowdfunding campaign (found at westysorganic.com) runs until October 17 and revolves around meeting the need of the community for healthier food options by serving locally sourced organic produce and food. The campaign is about getting back to basics: real organic food served with a communitycentric heartbeat. Future goals for Westy’s include community cooking classes and events to discuss healthy eating featuring local contributors from the holistic medical field and food industry.

The idea for Westy’s was inspired

by Thammavongsa’s brother-in-law, who is aggressively (and successfully) fighting colorectal cancer, and the family attributes it in part to a cleaner diet, solely being plant-based and organic.

“If anything comes from this crowdfunding effort, we would like to let our community know that someone here cares for those who need better food options, especially for those who are fighting health issues of all kinds,” says Tham-

mavongsa. “This effort is to be a service to those who need it most because that’s what community is truly all about.

We will start small, and start however possible, but this needs to get done; our community needs us. I hope this inspires others to do the same for their own city.”

Westy’s looks to start up with three different approaches based on what the community raises: • $50,000 would get them started with a ghost kitchen occupancy to start serving the community all-organic salads, sandwiches, and cold-pressed juices, and would introduce their “Hope Bus” where other business owners would sponsor fresh organic juice for cancer warriors around Northwest Peoria.

• $175,000 would get them started with their own location around Northwest Peoria; they are hoping for a small storefront for grab-and-go and dine-in options.

• $300,000 would help them develop a larger store front to introduce classes, events and gatherings for the community to discuss healthy eating as well as have nutritionists and naturopathic professionals as frequent contributors.

DrivingMBA Hosts Grand Opening and Safe Driving Expo on October 23 DRIVINGMBA, AN INDUSTRY LEADER IN DRIVER EDUCATION, IS HOSTING A RIBBON CUTTING EVENT ON SATURDAY, OCT. 23, FROM 1 TO 4 P.M. The special outdoor event will also include an official dedication to Jennifer Hinds. Jennifer was the daughter of Red Means Stop founder Frank Hinds. She was killed by a red light runner in 1997 when she was a senior in high school. Frank has worked tirelessly to pass “Jennifer’s Law,” increasing the penalties for red light runners who injure and kill others.

“The relationship between Red Means Stop and Driving MBA is significant. Among other things, in the past, Red Means Stop has provided scholarships for students who have been unable to afford quality driver training,” says Maria Wojtczak, Chief Operating Officer at DrivingMBA. “We are dedicating the West Valley office to Jennifer because she was a student at Ironwood High School in Glendale. This dedication is an important reminder that we need to do better, that Jennifer’s life wasn’t lost in vain,

and we need to continue to educate the public about the horrific consequences of running a red light,” Wojtczak adds. “Unfortunately, Arizona remains number one in the country for red light running, so we haven’t been able to move the needle on this just yet, but we will continue to fight to bring awareness to this important cause.”

To further raise awareness in the community, DrivingMBA is combining the grand opening event with a Safe Driving Expo. DrivingMBA will have its mobile unit on site where attendees can take a turn on the Defensive Driving Simulator. The fun-filled afternoon will raise awareness for all aspects of driver safety. Greulich’s Automotive will be on site to demonstrate how to check tire tread, put air in tires, check oil, and other basic car care tips. Red Means Stop, AAA and State Farm Insurance, representatives from Glendale Police and Fire as well as other automotive-related businesses will be in attendance.

Attendees can also enjoy delicious food from the plaza’s food vendors, including Rita’s, Café Rumba, Ginger China Bistro, and Heroes Pub & Grub.

Since opening its doors a decade ago, DrivingMBA has graduated over 15,000 students and has become known as one of the Valley’s most comprehensive teen driver training programs. Research shows that motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among teen-

The event, occurring from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on October 16, will provide single moms, widows and families of disabled individuals with oil changes by appointment only at no cost while supplies last. StoryWalk Comes to Paloma Community Park New event brings together reading and recreation in a creative way for kids ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9, THE CITY OF PEORIA WILL BE HOSTING A RIBBONCUTTING CEREMONY AT PALOMA COMMUNITY PARK TO WELCOME STORYWALK TO NW PEORIA. CHILDREN OF ALL AGES CAN SEE THEIR FAVORITE STORIES COME TO LIFE IN THE PARK. Developed in 2007 by Anne Ferguson, in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, StoryWalk is an innovative way for children to read and play outdoors at the same time. Typically, laminated pages from a children’s book are attached to wooden stakes or metal stands and installed along an outdoor path. As individuals stroll down the trail, they are directed to the next page in the story and to do a related activity. StoryWalks have been installed in 50 states and 13 countries.

“Helping our children acquire a love of reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime,”

says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “StoryWalk is a wonderfully creative way to infuse literacy with outdoor play and I am thrilled to see this library programming introduced at two of Peoria’s most cherished outdoor spaces.”

Families, clients and caregivers are encouraged to call the 24/7 hotline number to get immediate triage from a licensed RN and get assistance and guidance when events or emergency questions arise as to 911 and hospital visits.

Local Girl Scout Troop Helps Protect Peoria Wildlife with Recycling Project

“I had seen the fishing line wrapped around the ducks and inside the lakes. We created these recycling bins so all the ducks and other birds cannot get hurt and because monofilament fishing lines can take hundreds of years to decompose,” says Arnett.

With shipping delays for the parts due to the pandemic and some parts not fitting correctly, the girls had to look for solutions, visiting local plumbing stores to speak to experts and find the correct parts.

“With this project, I learned resilience because we were able to overcome obstacles to complete the recycling bins,” says Arnett.

Once the five bins were assembled and installed across the three Peoria parks, Arnett and Wilson then spoke with members of the community about the importance of using the bins.

enevilla is celebrating the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary by hosting a Golf Tournament Fundraiser, which will tee-off Saturday, November 13 at Wigwam Gold Golf Course in Litchfield Park.

Community Volunteering Strengthens Mother-Daughter Bond, Increases Self-Confidence in Teens

Local chapter of the National Charity League now accepting applications from NW Peoria parents and teens

R

aising kids who are philanthropically minded isn’t easy. However, instilling beliefs in teens about giving back to others in the community will help us build a more thoughtful, kinder, more considerate group of humans. That’s the goal of the National Charity League (NCL), Arrowhead Chapter.

Charity work is an integral part of life for mother and daughter Stefanie Ewbank and Selena Rodosta of Peoria.

They have been involved with NCL for two years. When they joined, their focus was to spend more intentional time together while being able to serve others.

“A few years ago, we were volunteering at the Back-toSchool Clothing Drive at Grand Canyon University and we saw all these NCL shirts with the tagline ‘Mothers and Daughters Serving Together,’” says Ewbank. “That was intriguing to us so we did a little research about the organization and decided to join. I liked the idea of leadership development because Selena has always been very shy, and I thought NCL would be a great way to help break her out of her shell.”

NCL has many chapters across Arizona providing mothers and daughters opportunities to volunteer with dozens

of organizations. The group also helps young ladies become strong, independent leaders who appreciate the value of giving back to those in need. The Arrowhead Chapter of NCL has more than 100 mothers and daughters who are focused on the organization’s three pillars - philanthropy, leadership and culture.

Each year, NCL requires mothers and daughters to volunteer a minimum number of hours in the community. Last year, Stefanie and Selena dedicated a cumulative 97 hours to community service in the Valley, earning them an award in the Arrowhead Chapter for most hours served.

“Last year we set a goal to complete 50 hours of service each,” says Ewbank. “While we didn’t quite make that, we are very proud of the work we did, especially with everything going on in the world. During the pandemic, we had very little control over our circumstances, so Selena and I chose to control what we could and making time to complete service projects was within our control. As we started serving these organizations, we learned many of them were hurting to get volunteers because of COVID. We saw that as a greater opportunity for us to be able to make even more of an impact.”

NCL applications are currently being accepted from local women with daughters in 6th through 9th grade. The Arrowhead Chapter members come from across the West and North parts of the Valley.

Volunteering not only gives Ewbank and Rodosta oneon-one time together, research shows volunteering boosts self-confidence and happiness in teens and teaches social and networking skills.

Congress Can Help Heat Up Solar Jobs in Arizona

ith more sunny days than any other state and a growing need for well-paying jobs, Arizona has a big opportunity to take center stage in solar industry. In order to make this a reality, we need our lawmakers to pass forward-thinking infrastructure legislation that will help solar companies like ours put more solar panels on more rooftops in the Valley and across the state.

As a local, homegrown Arizona business, Sunsolar Solutions is eager to lead the way and is seeing real momentum. While many businesses had to tighten their belts and lay off workers over the past year, we grew from 28 employees to over 110 people and we just opened our third office in Yuma as well as a sales and training center in Peoria.

We’ve helped over 7,000 Arizona households across our state switch to solar and benefit from affordable and reliable clean energy that also addresses climate change. As a result of those solar installations, we’ve helped Arizona reduce carbon emissions by 6.8 million metric tons, which is equivalent to planting 16.2 million trees. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Arizona now gets about 8% of its power from solar.

The president realizes the potential for solar in Arizona and across the country and has set ambitious climate and job creation goals for the country to reach by 2035. However, for companies like ours to keep creating these jobs and installing the solar panels we need to achieve these targets, the solar industry must grow four times faster than we are today and expand our workforce to employ more than 900,000 Americans. Even though the solar industry is experiencing strong growth, on our current trajectory, we’re going to fall short of that goal.

In order for us to keep creating jobs and providing clean energy savings

to Arizonans, our lawmakers need to take bold action to create longlasting growth for the solar industry in Arizona and across the country.

Fortunately, this month, Congress is taking up critical infrastructure legislation that can make the urgent investments we need to promote solar energy in our state.

Local solar companies need long-term stability to grow and sustain our businesses. Policies like the Solar Investment Tax Credit can encourage more solar energy installations by reducing taxes for Arizonans that go solar. Extending this policy for ten years gives businesses like ours the green light to hire more people to meet the demand, bringing new jobs to the Phoenix area.

We also need more support to encourage domestic manufacturing so we can make more solar components here at home. Investing in solar production capacity will only lead to more employment in our state, and as we create these jobs, that means more opportunities to diversify our workforce and provide high-paying careers for women, people of color, and workers transitioning from the fossil fuel industry.

That’s why it’s so critical for Congress to pass strong pro-solar legislation. We have an incredible opportunity to boost our economy, fight climate change, and create well-paying jobs for families in our state. Failing to pass these provisions in the upcoming infrastructure legislation could have catastrophic outcomes that means less prosperity in our state. And with frightening reports that indicate Phoenix might be unlivable by the end of the century due to extreme heat, we need to do everything we can to curb the impacts of the climate crisis.

In the Student Production Awards, Liberty High School received four nominations and Sunrise Mountain High School received a total of 17 nominations.

2. DO CREEPY CRAFTS Cheap, easy, and adorable… do I have your attention? For Halloween gifting or parties, I’m all about the super simple ghost lollipop. It’s my non-fail October go-to. All you need is rounded lollipops, coffee filters, small rubber bands, thin black ribbon, and a sharpie. For each ghost pop, use 2-3 coffee filters and wrap them over the head of the lolly. Secure them with a small rubber band, and then tie the ribbon around the “neck” of the ghost. Fluff the under layers of the coffee filters and use the sharpie to draw the ghost’s face (two eyes and an open “O” for the mouth). Once your family of ghosts are complete, stack them in a jar of candy corn for adorable presentation!

It’s also a good idea to make visibility a priority, giving kids wearable glow sticks.

When it comes to candy, keep in mind: • Don’t eat and trick-or-treat.

• Avoid giving choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies, or small toys as treats to young children.

Shang-Chi is a story about the scars that family leaves behind. Bolstered by Simu Liu and Tony Leung’s performances, the title character and his father Wenwu are at the heart of the film and deliver some of the best scenes from the film.

When the film focuses on these themes, it’s great, but it staggers when it doesn’t.

Its comedy particularly is grating, with most coming from Awkwafina’s supporting character that we are unfortunately forced to hang out with most of the movie. Action-wise it is better than previous films. Despite the usual problems with superhero movies, there’s still enough good in this film to make the watch worthwhile. In theaters.

A figure from a woman’s past comes back and begins a murder spree, which she finds herself tangled into. Malignant is James Wan’s unapologetic love letter to horror. Combining the tones of classic Giallo films with underground 90s horror, we have a psychological/ slasher/slight body horror feature, which masterfully balances scares, excitement and even humor (if sometimes unintentional). With such striking visuals and effective gore, as well as an incredibly committed performance

by Annabelle Wallis, Wan transports you into a demented world, and it’s a ride that will not stop until the end. It’s very much not for everyone, especially if you’re not familiar with the more specific parts of horror this review is referencing. But if you can get along with it, it’s a blast. In theaters.

An ex-marine, living a free life of poker playing to cope with a haunted past, finds himself having to face it once the son of a man he knew asks for his help in a dangerous plan. A quiet, patient film, like many of Paul Schrader’s previous films, The Card Counter is about a lonely man, content with his current existence, if still clearly hiding his pain.

It’s the lead performance by Oscar Isaac that sells this movie. He subtly shows a range from pained to scary as he portrays William Tell. His character is so interesting that he actually overshadows the other characters, despite the best efforts of the other actors. It’s a very uncomfortable film with disturbing imagery and dark subjects, but if you can be able to stomach it, you will be rewarded. In theaters.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings After ten years apart, a young man must fight against his father to save the world. A surprising work from Marvel,
