PEORIA RECEIVES REGIONAL PARAMEDICINE GRANT

THE GRANT WILL ALLOW PEORIA TO CONDUCT A REGIONAL COMMUNITY PARAMEDICINE PROGRAM THE PEORIA FIRE-MEDICAL DEPARTMENT WAS AWARDED THE COMMUNITY PARAMEDICINE GRANT, ALLOWING PEORIA, SURPRISE AND GOODYEAR TO CONDUCT ANOTHER PILOT PROGRAM. Recently, Peoria city council approved the intergovernmental agreement to operate the program.

“This program aims to build a healthier community,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “By proactively reaching out to those in need, we are able to provide the support our residents need to live their best lives; and I’m thrilled to see this program once again offered to our community.”

The grant is $175,000 for a one-year

paramedicine program in which Peoria is the recipient and grant administrator. The new paramedicine unit will operate three days a week within the three jurisdictions. The project will focus on frequent utilizers of the 911 system and will provide home visits to determine health care needs and social determinants for health.

From there, referrals or resources are provided to try and lessen the reliance on the 911 system for non-emergent health care needs.

“The collaborative partnership across the three cities is what makes the community paramedicine project so special,” said Goodyear Fire Chief Paul Luizzi. “Providing compassion and care with consistency is what the fire departments are known for and we’re grateful to receive this grant to continue to meet the proactive needs of the community.”

The intergovernmental agreement is on the agenda for the councils for the cities of Surprise and Goodyear as well.

“The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is pleased to be working collaboratively with Peoria and Goodyear

fire departments to provide a service that increases the level of service and care to non-emergency patients in need while simultaneously reducing overall costs for our health care system, providing more bed space in hospital emergency departments, and keeping fire trucks available to assist residents and visitors that are experiencing emergencies,” said Surprise Fire-Medical Chief Tom Abbott.

In 2016 and 2017, all three departments worked together to establish a regional Community Paramedicine Program through a previous grant awarded by the Vitalyst Foundation. The new grant will allow continued regional service and build on the foundation established by the previous program.

“This grant allows us to continue offering important community paramedicine services to Peoria residents and to our partner cities of Surprise and Goodyear” said Peoria Fire Chief Bobby Ruiz. “The collaborative proactive approach to community health increases the level of service we can offer to those that we serve.”

PEORIA LAUNCHES CODE COMPLIANCE 101 PROGRAM SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR QUESTIONS THAT THE CITY RECEIVES ARE RELATED TO CODE COMPLIANCE. To connect residents with experts and get their questions answered, the city of Peoria created the Code Compliance 101 program.

“The city of Peoria works to ensure safe, healthy neighborhoods and that is consistent with our city codes,” said Peoria Neighborhood Services Manager Jack Stroud. “While striving for voluntary compliance and public awareness, the code compliance function maintains and preserves the integrity of buildings, properties, and neighborhoods in the community. Our Code Compliance 101 program is intended to help residents and business owners gain a better understanding of how our city codes work to benefit them and how we can work together in partnership to create and maintain a sense of community pride.”

Code Compliance 101 is a series of education and training sessions where code officers will discuss common code violations and provide an overview of the complaint process. The most common violations in Peoria are RV and trailer storage, weeds and grass, material and debris, dead vegetation, and signs. The code compliance team is dedicated to protecting the public’s health, safety and welfare, while ensuring every citizen the right to a clean, enjoyable neighborhood by enforcing the City of Peoria’s codes and ordinances.

ENHANCEMENT IMPLEMENTED FOR ARIZONA’S

AMBER, BLUE, SILVER ALERTS SYSTEMS THE ARIZONA’S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY (AZDPS) IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SENDING EMERGENCY ALERT MESSAGES TO THE PUBLIC IN THREE CRITICAL AREAS: AMBER ALERTS, SILVER ALERTS AND BLUE ALERTS. These alerts have the capability of reaching the Arizona public using two different emergency systems. The first is called the Emergency Alert System (EAS), which is used by TV and radio operators to share out emergency messages in real-time. The second is called the Wireless Emergency Alert system (WEA), which is used by cell phone companies to share out similar emergency messages in real-time.

As of September 17, 2019, the AZDPS holds the capability and processes necessary to request the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts through the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System. IPAWS is a modern integration of the nation’s alert and warning infrastructure and will save time when time matters most, while protecting life and property.

AZDPS will continue to activate WEA and send EAS activation information for all AMBER Alerts.

Hereinafter, Blue Alerts will also be activated over WEA and EAS. Additionally, only Silver Alerts with

imminent threat to safety or life will be activated over WEA. Otherwise, all other alert-related resources, including EAS will be utilized in Silver Alert activations.

The AZDPS Alert System broadcasts three different alerts; AMBER, Blue and Silver.

• AMBER Alerts - The Arizona AMBER Alert Plan is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies and broadcasters to send out an emergency alert to the public when a child is abducted.

• Blue Alerts - A Blue Alert is activated when a suspect is at large about killing or injuring a law enforcement official and pose a threat to the public or law enforcement community.

• Silver Alerts - A Silver Alert is activated when a person with specific cognitive or developmental disabilities as defined by statute or a person over 65 goes missing. Prior to June 2018, this only applied to persons over 65.

All cell phone carriers are opted-in for these types of alerts. Arizona residents and visitors will continue to receive alerts on their cell phones if they are within the area of a WEA activation.

While cell phone customers can optout from receiving alerts, the alert itself is a call to the public for assistance in helping Arizona agencies locate the subjects of the alert. AZDPS

asks the public to continue their critical role in helping save lives.

Since its launch in 2012, the WEA system been used more than 40,000 times to warn the public across the country about dangerous weather, missing children, and other critical situations – all through alerts on compatible cell phones and other mobile devices.

Historically, the AZDPS requested EAS activation through KTAR News radio and WEA activation through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for AMBER Alert activation.

AZDPS now has the ability to send broadcasting agencies a direct activation request of AMBER Alerts, Blue Alerts and Silver Alerts. This allows for quicker delivery of a pre-recorded audio file that can then broadcasted by television and radio stations across Arizona (broadcaster’s discretion). Should the IPAWS system should fail, KTAR News 92.3 FM will continue to be a partner and back-up for activating the EAS alerts.

Unique to Second Saturdays, is the pop-up restaurants, complete with vintage dishware, linens and centerpieces. For $30, attendees can pick one of three themed dining experiences with a gourmet menu cooked by a professional chef: Frank Sinatra, One Night in Paris and A Taste of the Islands. Each Second Saturday will have different pop-up restaurant experiences from which to choose.

PEORIA WELCOMES INAUGURAL COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL

IF THERE’S ONE THING VALLEY RESIDENTS LOVE, IT’S A GOOD OUTDOOR MUSIC FESTIVAL! And the West Valley is proud to welcome a new country music festival to this fall’s entertainment line-up. Pleasant Harbor, the City of Peoria, and Dillion’s Bayou Restaurant are teaming up to host the first Peoria Country Music Fest on Saturday, October 19.

Held at Pleasant Harbor, located at 8708 West Harbor Boulevard in Peoria, the Peoria Country Music Fest is set to feature four country music stars and bands including Hillbilly Deluxe, Chad Freeman, Josh Roy, and Rob West. In addition to live music taking place throughout the day, guests can enjoy tasty bites from local food trucks, a beer garden serving a variety of adult beverages, and a fan experience within the event that includes live bull riding, a cigar lounge, corn hole games and more.

Gates open at noon and the event officially kicks off at 1:45 p.m. with a Welcoming Ceremony featuring the Presentation of Colors and National Anthem. Hillbilly Deluxe takes the stage from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., Chad Freeman rocks the crowd from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., a live bull riding show from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., then live music returns to the stage with Josh Roy yourupperwestsider.com

After enjoying the festival, guests are invited to partake in the Harbor’s many watersports and lakeside activities such as H2-Whoa!, the world’s largest floating waterslide; boat, sail, jet ski, kayak and paddle board rentals; hydro flying and more. In addition to the concerts at the festival, Dillion’s Bayou Restaurant, located at the Pleasant Harbor Marina, will feature three days of live country music that weekend and will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

SPARKLING DIVINE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS Q. What is the best kept secret to making fabulous baked goods?

Room temperature ingredients is one of the most important steps in baking! There is chemistry behind it, but we won’t go into that here - you can always Google it if knowing is believing! Eggs, butter, milk and any other types of dairy ingredients work best when they are at room temperature before you bake. These items should be slightly cool to touch and shouldn’t sit out for more than an hour or so. Room temperature butter and dairy allow for the ingredients to blend more evenly, such as when creaming with the sugars.

Room temperature eggs will give you more volume in the batter. A quick way to bring butter or dairy ingredients to room temp if you’re short on time is to warm them in the microwave for 5 seconds at a time. You only need to do this once or twice, otherwise you’ll have a melted puddle of butter or boiling milk

which does not work! You can also quickly bring eggs to room temp by placing them in a bowl of warm water for about 15 minutes.

2. What is the best way to measure ingredients?

Baking is a science, which means it is very important you use the right types of tools and techniques to measure your ingredients. This ensures the ratio of ingredients is correct and distributed properly into your recipe.

Make sure to use measuring cups and spoons to measure dry ingredients. These are the ones that come separated as 1 cup, ¾ cup, ½ cup, 1 tablespoon, 1 teaspoon, etc. Also, don’t forget to level off your ingredients by using the back or straight side of a knife. An overflowing cup of flour is going to result in a dry baked good.

Liquids should be measured in liquid measuring cups. These are clear glass

or plastic cups with several measurements listed on the side. Occasionally, you’ll come across a recipe that requires you to measure in ounces or grams. Having a small kitchen scale on hand is always a good idea for those instances.

3. Is it necessary to prep your ingredients?

Yes, yes and yes! Doing a little prep work ensures a successful baking experience! First, make sure you read the recipe and directions prior to whipping up your masterpiece!

It can be very frustrating to be halfway through the process and realize you don’t have baking soda on hand (which is a very important ingredient)!

Measuring out your ingredients and having them all prepped is essential.

Have you ever answered a phone call while scooping out flour and when you were done talking you couldn’t

remember if you measured out 2 or 3 cups? Guilty! While prepping, make sure you sift your dry ingredients together with a sifter or strainer, such as flour, cocoa, salt, baking soda and powder. This will ensure an even distribution of ingredients and break up any little clumps that might be in them. Another option is to just put them in a bowl and mix thoroughly with a fork or wire whisk.

4. How can I prevent my baked goods from sticking to the pan?

Parchment paper is your best friend and can be found at the grocery store.

You’ll have to cut it to fit different shaped pans. The best way to use it is to butter the pans, place the parchment and dust with flour. For cookies, silicone mats work fabulous and help to cut down waste because they can be reused. Precut parchment and silicone mats can be purchased on Amazon.

Pumpkin Patch Season Has Arrived!

TIPS FOR PUMPKIN PATCHING IN YOUR FAVORITE ARIZONA PATCH OF PUMPKINS

T

emperatures are slowly starting to drop, leaves are beginning to change in Northern Arizona, and everywhere you look are pumpkin patches, fall festivals, haunted houses, costumes, and spooky decorations. Autumn is officially arriving in Arizona and one of our favorite ways to celebrate and enjoy the season is to visit one of our many local pumpkin patches.

We’re sharing our inside knowledge and some of our best tips for visiting pumpkin patches here in the Sonoran Desert.

TIP 1: REMEMBER YOU ARE IN THE DESERT Many people who currently live in the Valley of the Sun are transplants from other parts of the country, so our most important tip for anyone planning to make the trek to a local pumpkin patch is this: remember that you’re still the desert and that it’s still hot outside! Nope, you’re not in Kansas anymore – or Minnesota, or Wisconsin, or California, or Illinois, or Pennsylvania. Remember that even though fall is in the air and you’re in full pumpkin mode, Phoenix is still a desert. And it’s still hot. It is almost guaranteed to still be hot every afternoon until the week after Halloween, so plan accordingly.

TIP 2: RESEARCH THE VENUE Take time to find the pumpkin patch that will work best for your family. Consider how long you are willing to sit in the car, what activities your kids will enjoy, and how much different pumpkin patches cost. All of them are fun, but there are ranges of activities and price points. If you are all about taking a day trip, plan on heading to a different part of the Valley or outside of Maricopa County. There are some great pumpkin patches in

Generally, pumpkin patches have a somewhat common range of activities for most ages, but some specialize in adult fun too. Watch for extras like haunted houses, music venues, or even beer gardens. In this day and age, most pumpkin patches have a good website or at least a Facebook page. Check out their information before you go to find distance and directions, hours, and prices, as well as to check out what kinds of activities are available on-site. A little planning ahead will make your trip much more enjoyable.

TIP 3: GO EARLY Temperatures are usually quite a bit cooler in the morning, which makes it a great time to get outside and enjoy autumn weather. Typically, the crowds at a pumpkin patch are smaller right when they open, so the lines and wait times are shorter. It’s also easier to maneuver small kids around before lunchtime, when they get hungry. I recommend arriving as early as possible to make the trip more enjoyable for the whole family.

TIP 4: TAKE WATER It’s the desert and you are outside in the sunshine.

Even in cooler temperatures, you need to be sure to drink tons of water. Don’t make the mistake of leaving your beverages at home or trying to rely on food and drink stands at the pumpkin patch.

Sometimes the costs are high, and sometimes they just don’t sell what you need. Be sure bring enough water for everyone in your group, to reduce the risk of running out while you’re there.

It’s always best to be prepared for the trip ahead of time, especially in the desert.

TIP 5: DRESS APPROPRIATELY Whether the venue is a farm or a working ranch, the pumpkin patch will be sitting in an outdoor desert area that is not flip-flop friendly (think dirt, rocks, scrub grass, and cactus). Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, socks, a hat, sunscreen, and layer comfortable lightweight clothing. I recommend the type of clothes you would wear hiking as the environment is the same, but cowboy gear is great too. Nothing beats a good pair of cowboy boots at the ranch!

TIP 6: BRING CASH In our experience, there is a really high likelihood of needing cash. Most pumpkin patches are small family farms or ranches, so credit card readers are not always readily available. That has changed gradually over the years, but it’s still best to bring some cash for your pumpkins and snacks, just to be on the safe side. Also, remember that most pumpkin patches are located on the outskirts of town and away from stores and strip malls, so an ATM machine may be a little tough to find.

Visiting a pumpkin patch once fall arrives is a special treat, full of great memories and well worth the trip. There are some great pumpkin patches in all corners of the Sonoran Desert, and most of them bring a special Arizona flare to the mix that you just won’t find in other parts of the United States. t’s that time of year again! Peoria Film Fest is returning for its second year. This year’s festival will run from Thursday, October 10 to Sunday, October 13. The four-day event will be held at Harkins Arrowhead Fountains Theatres located at 16046 North Arrowhead Fountains Center Drive, Peoria, AZ 85382. “We’re excited to be returning to the City of Peoria. It’s an honor to be able to present great films in the Northwest Valley,” said Phoenix Film Foundation Executive Director Jason Carney.

If you are a movie lover, this is an event not to be missed. The Peoria Film Festival’s Opening Night begins at 6 p.m. with a pre-festival cocktail party hosted at Modern Round in the P83 Entertainment District on 83rd Avenue, just south of Bell Road.

Opening night guests will be treated to Modern Round’s extensive combination of chef-inspired items as well as a new spin on some timeless dishes.

A new bride discovers that her groom’s family has a dark secret behind a family ritual.

What I love about Ready or Not is that it gets tons of laughs, not just because of its massive amount of gore or swearing, but because of its staging and slapsticklike comedy. The chaotic and relentless feeling, combined with the editing, gives you the feeling that you’re right there along with Grace (Samara Weaving).

Weaving proves to be a true badass and manages to be a standout in a cast full of incredible performances, including Adam Brody, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell. Ready or Not’s only real issue is that it isn’t a particularly scary film…a difficult thing to swallow in a movie meant to be in the horror genre. The great cast, clever screenplay and well played direction keeps you entertained, nonetheless.

THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON A man with down syndrome runs from his home with a drifter to become a wrestler.

Sweetness is how one can describe The Peanut Butter Falcon - like the lightest Terrence Malick film never made.

Peanut Butter Falcon flows freely from scene to scene, showing our characters taking in their surroundings and simply loving life. Zack Gottasgen is absolutely incredible here. This may also be Shia LaBeouf’s best performance in years and confirms that he can be a superb actor.

The southern-inspired score brings a feeling of authenticity to the film. This film is best described as beautiful.

AD ASTRA

An astronaut travels to the furthest areas of the solar system to find his father, who may be causing electrical signals that could wipe out life in the universe.

Ad Astra will not be for everyone. It takes its time and is not anywhere near as action packed as the trailers suggest. The performances are quiet and at times may come off as bland. However, those quiet performances leant themselves to the beautiful subtlety of the film. It subverts a typical space journey movie, providing an intimate human drama about loyalty and our beliefs versus reality. Combine a gorgeous score by Max Richter and Lorne Balfe with Hoyte van Hoytema’s beautiful cinematography, and Ad Astra is a classic in the making.

27 years after the first film, a now-grown Losers Club returns to Derry to put an end to the returned maniacal clown.

Chapter Two shows that Andy Muschietti is a very exciting filmmaker when given free rein to do whatever he desires. The designs, locations and situations show him to be one of our more creative horror filmmakers of the day. He has a great eye for casting with the adult actors, particularly Bill Hader and James Ransone. “It’s” biggest problem is that, despite the time change and supposedly more mature themes, the movie feels no different than the previous film. We see the same humor and same style; the only real change is that now they’re adults. There seems to be a little less charm here than in the previous film. Chapter Two is visually a decent film, just a bit…. lacking in soul.

IS IT A GOOD TIME TO MOVE? TIPS FOR BUYERS AND SELLERS

f you ask a question like this to a realtor, the answer should be, “It depends. Why are you thinking of moving?” Once we know the why, then we can answer the question.

I had a client who wanted to sell about five years ago because he thought the market had gone up so much it would soon crash (more than one person was thinking this if they had gone through 2005-2008). Nothing I could say would change his mind, so he sold and rented and waited and is still waiting.

It was not a good time for him to sell.

If you are thinking of buying a bigger home here in the valley, then it is a good time because almost all of the homes are going up in value. If you are downsizing, then the same story applies. There is no need to wait for your home to go up in value because the other home you are going to be buying is going up as well. Get to where you really want to be and enjoy it as long as possible. And if you are happy where you are, great! Stay put...you live in a beautiful area of the country.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF SELLING… Inventory is at the lowest level since 2005 in Maricopa county for singlefamily homes. In the Upper West Side (85383), single-family homes for sale reached 413 in August compared to 482 this time last year. While this may seem like a lot of homes for sale to most, the reality is, it isn’t. To give you some perspective, below is a sales graph of active homes for sale year over year for the last five years.

there for buyers with homes a little less updated than others. Or you can also spend a little more upfront and get the home you desire, completely remodeled. The option is yours depending on how you want to spend your dollar.

THIS IS GREAT FOR SELLERS, BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR BUYERS? Why would you want to purchase a home in this market? With prices continuing to rise and the interest rates incredibly low, your payment is possibly the lowest you will find for quite some time. The average rents this past month in 85383 are right around $1,951/month. If you are thinking of buying, my advice is to consult with a lender who you feel comfortable speaking with about your options. They will be happy to discuss your options and help you decide what is best for you. Your realtor should be able to connect you with a great lender who can guide you through the process as well.

As I mentioned above, you might be happy in your home and want to stay there for years. If that is the case, then I would also recommend speaking to a lender to check on whether refinancing is beneficial for you. If it is, then you could save thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars.

As you can see from the graph, inventory levels continue to drop (note: the green line is 2019) creating the demand we are seeing right now.

With inventory taking a dip, this demand is driving sales prices up. Home prices are seeing a peak in the past five-year trend, shown in the graph 2.

August home sales reached a median of $383,000, jumping $18,000 from this time last year.

Essentially, now is a great time to buy, sell or refinance your home. Whether you work with me, or another Realtor, make sure you are working with someone who knows what they are doing. No one wants to schedule a surgery with a surgeon who just got out of medical school. You want someone who’s been working in their field for years. edona is a one of a kind place for tourists from all over the world, and a favorite weekend trip for both Arizonans and visitors from out of state. Named the “Most Beautiful Place in the U.S.” by USA Today in 2003, the stunning Red Rock views, tall pines, quaint shops, and beautiful creekside venues make it a charming place for a getaway any time of the year.

We often get questions from Arizona newcomers about Sedona, since it is a favorite of so many people and one of the most frequently recommended locations for people to visit. Here are our favorite spots to see when we head north to Red Rock country.

IN TOWN EXPERIENCE The town of Sedona is full of arts and culture, with shopping, restaurants and sightseeing tours. Whether you are spiritual, artistic, cultural, an outdoor enthusiast, or just plain laid back, Sedona has something for you. Our first stop is usually Uptown, right at the top of the “Y” – the intersection of Highway 89A and 179. It’s a great spot to find a public parking spot and get out to see the local sights. Walk up and down the block for a taste of the Old West town of Sedona’s origins, mixed with

A good place to start is the Visitor’s Center, where you can get great information to plan your visit around town.

One of our favorite in town spots to visit is Tlaquepaque, an outdoor shopping and dining area just south of uptown, with old world charm and an upscale atmosphere. Nestled in the trees on the banks of Oak Creek, the site of Tlaquepaque was once the homestead of Sedona’s original postmaster, Theodore Schnebly. The story goes that Schnebly was tasked with naming the town and, rather than picking his own name, he chose the more beautiful name of his beloved wife, Sedona.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE AND RED ROCK COUNTRY The best thing about Sedona has to be its location in Red Rock country. No matter where you go in Sedona, you have a stunning view of fantastic rock formations like nowhere else. Hiking and biking trails are abundant but be sure to pick up a trail guide or talk to a local park ranger or outfitter before you head out. The views and trails are gorgeous, but it is easy to get lost in the Coconino National Forest wilderness.

Some of the most popular outdoor spots include Slide Rock State Park and Oak Creek Canyon, but these are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Awesome trails and places to explore are everywhere throughout the town and surrounding area. Our favorite place to hike is in Red Rock State Park, just off Highway 89A as you enter Sedona. It has a visitor’s center with great information about the park, trails, local geology, and wildlife, as well as fantastic hiking trails in the Red Rocks and along the creek.

SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES One of the things Sedona is best known for is being a spiritual center.

From its origins as a spiritual center for the early Sinagua people who lived there, to the more modern ideas of vortexes and new age spiritualism, Sedona is a popular place to seek spiritual healing of all types. Known for being the home of quite a few vortexes, or places on the earth with a special field of energy, Sedona attracts people from across the globe who want to visit these sites. The four most popular vortex locations are Airport Mesa, Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

It’s also home to churches and houses of worship for almost every denomination. The most famous of these churches is another of our favorite places to visit, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Built on the top of a huge outcropping with a backdrop of Red Rock cliffs, this majestic church was originally commissioned by a local rancher and sculptor, Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel, built on Coconino National Forest land with special permission, was completed in 1956 and remains one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks. Legend has it that it is also known for being the location of one of the strongest and most easily felt premier vortexes in Sedona.

Sedona is a great place to visit all year round. It’s cooler than Phoenix in the summer and warmer than Flagstaff in the winter, with beautiful scenery and outdoor adventure in every season. It’s a great place for a day trip or weekend stay, with many unique places to see and experience.
