Be Patriotic by Going Solar

Because of scheduling issues that we don’t need to get into, we weren’t able to run our usual column for the July issue. That’s unfortunate since the Fourth of July would have been the perfect occasion to express the patriotic feelings that come so naturally to us as we muse about the green-energy transition, an often-dry topic that nonetheless touches on themes of national solidarity and purpose.
But, what the heck—September is as fine a month as any to talk about what solar power and patriotism have to do with each other. (An Arizona September is hotter than July in most other states, anyway). so here goes, our Fourth of July column (edited to reflect the passing of time):
The Fourth of July came and went again this year. It was an occasion to celebrate the history and traditions that tie us together as fellow citizens.
But doing so might have been hard for some folks. With so much anxiety and cynicism in the air nowadays, patriotism has to compete with less sunny emotions about the country’s present and future, leaving some Americans unsure of how to celebrate the nation’s birthday in a way that feels true to how they’re feeling.
The root of the problem could be a lack of active engagement. Love of country, like love of anything else, is not just something you feel; it’s something you do. The blessings that we celebrate every year didn’t materialize out of nowhere. They came from concrete actions performed by patriots who were committed to
practicing the love they felt for their country by solving its problems. As their descendants, it’s incumbent on us to follow in their footsteps by solving the problems of our own time.
With that in mind, going solar is an excellent way to put your patriotism into practice. Don’t see the connection? Let us explain.
As we noted, loving one’s country means actively working to make it better. But that’s hard to do amid a pessimistic political climate in which citizens don’t trust one another. Multiple public-opinion polls show many Americans doubting the good intentions of fellow citizens on the opposite side of the political spectrum. How do you engage in helpful actions when the most effective actions—organized, large-scale ones—are stymied by widespread distrust?
In such a climate, small-scale but visible actions might be more effective than attempts to create large-scale change through political organizing. “Seeing is believing,” as the old saying goes. If people can see positive changes happening because other members of their community are taking steps to create those changes, then it could become easier to believe other positive changes—perhaps even bigger ones—are also possible.
As a private decision with public visibility and impact, investing in rooftop solar for one’s home is, therefore, a perfect way to help break through the walls of mistrust and cynicism. People can see the solar panels in their neighborhoods and hear the notes of optimism in their neighbors’ voices as they explain why they decided to put them up. More civically
engaged members of a community can see their neighbors coming to public meetings to push for solar-friendly policies.
As a surefire way to ensure continued access to crucial natural resources, solar power can unite Americans of different persuasions around a common purpose. Americans agree that the wellbeing of the country depends on a stable climate and energy security. And they agree on the solution: three-quarters of Americans want the US to generate all its electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind.
Arizona, like other southwestern states, is particularly vulnerable to the consequences of drought, which scientists agree is worsened by the heating of the planet. The southwestern states that rely on the Colorado River for irrigation, tap water, and hydropower recently were forced to upend a century-old deal on water rights by agreeing to slash the amount of water that can flow to cities and farms.
In a situation like this, solar power means the power to survive. By capturing the sun’s energy, we can harness the very thing that, because of the greenhouse effect, is heating and drying our region of the country to unsustainable degrees and apply it toward solving the problem. What better way is there to love your country than to participate directly in the solution to one of its most pressing crises?
If you’re ready to achieve energy independence for your family—and help achieve it for your country—then call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Known for its iconic theaters across the state, Harkins is now merging dining, top-tier technology, and films, setting a benchmark in the domain of luxury movie-watching.
The decision to launch the flagship Ciné Grill in Peoria emerged from a longstanding demand. The Northwest Valley community has been vocal about wanting more cinema options, and Harkins, already having a presence in Park West, recognized this as an opportunity. Given the warm reception by the local community and businesses, Lake Pleasant Towne Center was the ideal starting point.
Diverging significantly from their traditional theaters, Harkins Ciné Grill is designed to enhance the viewing experience, offering an all-inclusive atmosphere for guests. It boasts features that stand out, such as an indoor-outdoor

The menu stands out not just for its range but also its suitability for a theater

Community College students change the lives of people with dementia
By Lin Sue Flood Photo provided by Hospice of the Valley

AMesa Community College foreign exchange student discovered the perfect way to feel at home in a new city. Buhari Abdulai signed up for the College Partners Program offered by Hospice of the Valley. The innovative program matches college students with older adults living with dementia.
“I found the vision of hospice so intriguing, and I wanted to be part of a great team that provides beautiful care to people living with dementia. There is nothing like that in my country,” the 24-year-old Ghana native says.
For the next seven months, Buhari offered socialization and companionship to 80-year-old Bill Harris and his family.
“Buhari became a part of our extended family,” says Bill’s wife, Myra. “For two semesters, he faithfully visited on a weekly
basis and his visits were eagerly anticipated by all of us. Buhari brought laughter and joy into our home. He conversed with my husband, sampled new foods with us and even allowed my grandson David to introduce him to red licorice. He played games with our grandson and graciously joined us for David’s sixth birthday party — it just made his day!”
Buhari and other College Partners volunteers say they are grateful for the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. They are exposed to hands-on, real-life, careerdefining experiences that have a lasting impact.
Arya Yadav says volunteering taught her how to appreciate the small things in life that we often miss and celebrate “the joy of living in the moment and relishing it as a sweet memory later.”
Danielle Cooper utilized the magic of music to make meaningful connections with her person with dementia. “She
loved ‘70s music and was able to sing every word of every song!”

Mariah Meza Perez was paired with a former nurse practitioner who shares “brave, wild, and inspiring” stories from her career — and inspired her to pursue the same profession. One of her fondest memories was taking strolls together and sharing their gratitude for each other at the end of every visit.
Hospice of the Valley and its Supportive Care for Dementia program launched this unique student volunteer program in 2021 with a grant from the national Community Care Corps. The goal is to enhance quality of life for people living with early and moderate stages of dementia, and also to reduce caregiver burden.
In exchange for their generous gift of time, students receive incentives like scholarship opportunities, monthly education with dementia experts, and a Dementia Training Certificate.

“The knowledge I’ve gained has sparked a passion inside me as a future healthcare provider,” says Ali Kindred. As a College Partners volunteer, she provided companionship by watching westerns and making milkshakes, allowing a family member to take a much-needed break from caregiving.
Now that Buhari is back in Ghana, he is determined to advocate for people living with dementia. “After learning about the complexities of this disease, I realize there may be people who have been misdiagnosed as mentally ill. I plan to educate families in my community to seek medical care and obtain accurate diagnoses. People living with dementia are not mentally ill, but they do require optimal care, love, and support.”

Charity Desert Diamond Arena Hosts Tower Challenge in Memory of 9/11 Heroes

Each year, as the calendar marks September 11, a reverent silence falls over many parts of America. In Arizona, this solemnity is complemented by a resolute act of remembrance and honor: the annual 911 Tower Challenge at the Desert Diamond Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave., in Glendale.
Set to take place on September 11 at 7 a.m., this monumental event aims to pay homage to the souls lost during the harrowing attacks in 2001. But it goes beyond that – it’s a tip of the hat, a salute, a deep bow to the indomitable spirit of first responders and military personnel who stand as a protective shield against both foreign and domestic threats.
The challenge itself is a resonant echo of the 110 floors and 2,071 steps that constituted the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers. Participants –firefighters, police officers, military personnel, and civilians – ascend the same number of stairs. What’s even more poignant is that many firefighters take on this task wearing their full gear, a moving tribute that brings to the forefront the enormity of the sacrifices made that day.
As participants climb, they are met with more than just physical steps. Lining their path are photographs of the fallen heroes from that fateful day. Each photo
serves as a potent reminder of the individual lives lost, of dreams cut short, of families torn apart. These photographs aren’t just a recounting of a tragedy but a testament to bravery and selflessness. Participants often pause, even if for a brief moment, to read the names and acknowledge the sacrifice each individual made in the line of duty.
The 911 Tower Challenge isn’t just a tribute; it’s a beacon of hope, kindness, strength, and bravery that shone through during one of America’s darkest hours. Participation in the challenge is not just about climbing stairs but about climbing out of the shadow of grief and into the light of remembrance and respect.
All proceeds from the challenge will be channeled to The 100 Club of Arizona, an organization that stands as a pillar of support for the families of public safety officers and firefighters when tragedy strikes.

On August 12, Someburros, a cherished family-run chain renowned for its authentic Sonoran-style Mexican food since 1986, introduced its distinct flavors to the residents of Peoria with its 14th Arizona establishment. Nestled at the Northeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Thunderbird Road, this marks the brand’s inaugural venture in Peoria.
To commemorate the grand opening, Someburros held a vibrant celebration for the Peoria community with entertainment, a live mariachi band, and a bevy of surprises. Patrons also received gift card giveaways, piñata prizes, and an appearance by Someburros’ beloved mascot, Nacho, the burro.

Born from the culinary legacy of the Vasquez family, Someburros debuted in Tempe in 1986. Since its inception, it has consistently offered quality Sonoran-style Mexican cuisine lovingly prepared from time-tested family recipes.

The new Peoria location reflects this lineage, promising dishes crafted with quality ingredients.
The expansive menu boasts items ranging from the quintessential tacos, tostadas, and enchiladas, to burros. The pollo fundido stands out as a crowdfavorite, along with the timeless red and green chili beef. Someburros’ frozen margaritas, available for both dine-in and takeout, are also anticipated to be a hit.
“We are thrilled to expand Someburros to another location in the West Valley. Peoria is the place for growth and opportunity, community and connection, Peoria is the place for Someburros. We can’t wait to be able to share my family’s well-loved recipes to serve a part of the northwest Valley we haven’t been able to reach before,” Owner and President Tim Vasquez says. “At Someburros, we pride ourselves on our ability to provide the best food and the friendliest service while giving back to the community.”
Designed with the diner in mind, the new Peoria outlet features both a walkup counter for in-house and takeout orders and a drive-thru for on-the-go convenience. Inside, guests will find a

Peoria Senior Scores Perfect ACT Score Education
Photo courtesy of Peoria Unified School District
Ironwood High School senior Violet Lageschulte achieved something few other students accomplish – she earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT assessment test in all subject areas –English, math, reading, and science. More than 1.3 million students took the ACT test, while only .313% achieved a perfect score in all subject areas.

Lageschulte has always been a good test taker. She previously attended Copperwood Elementary School, also in the Peoria Unified School District, and participated in their Center for Differentiated Instruction program for gifted students. As a sixth grader, Lageschulte traveled to Ironwood High School to take math. Although her future plans are still undecided, she has a strong interest in STEM-related or cybersecurity fields.
The ACT is a standardized test for high school achievement and college admissions. While there have been more students meeting all four ACT College Readiness Benchmarks over the past several years, the average ACT composite has remained essentially unchanged. The national average composite score for 2022 was 19.8. The ACT is scored on a scale of one to 36, with 36 being the highest possible score.

TINTED TOPS!
By Sari CusterThis is a project that will get your (color) wheels spinning! There are seven colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (ROY G BIV). When all seven colors of light combine they produce white light. The colors of objects appear the way they do because of how they interact with light. When an object appears red, it absorbs every color of visible light except red, which it reflects. Thus, how light is absorbed and reflected in relation to these objects is what determines their color.
SUPPLIES
• 1 paper plate or piece of cardstock paper
• 2 rubber bands
• 1 pencil
• 1 pair of scissors
• 1 set of crayons (in ROYGBIV)
CHALLENGE
• Draw a circle with a 4-in diameter on the plate
• Use the pencil to mark the center of the circle
• Cut the circle out from the paper plate
• Mark seven evenly spaced sections on your circle

• Color each section of the circle using the crayons, each section being a different color
• Using your pencil, poke a hole through the middle of the circle
• Secure the pencil in the middle of the circle using the rubber bands
• Spin the top
ASK YOURSELF SOME QUESTIONS
What are the colors of the rainbow? What colors do you think are in white light? What happened to your top when you spun it? How did the colors change? Would this experiment work using a different color plate? Why or why not? How does speed change how the colors change?
Before doing this activity - did you think there was a science to color? Colors are just one of many ways we see art and science connect. Many times art can be inspired by science, and sometimes science needs art to help explain complex ideas and happenings. Can you think of any other ways or places art and science connect?

Though born and raised in Kentucky, Jason Higgins has spent a lot of time developing his successful regular and vegan spicy Buffalo sauces in Arizona.
As the creator of Jupiter Rings Buffalo Sauce, Higgins opened Jupiter Wings restaurant in Peoria on his birthday, July 29, so Valley residents can taste his vegan-friendly wings and Buffalo sauce in person again.

VEGAN WINGS
“We serve everything on our menu as traditional or vegan, and we are known for our amazing Buffalo sauce, but also for having the best vegan wings in the world,” says Higgins. “Restaurant visitors can also get loaded fries or something off the seafood menu. All our menu is available online for carryout or delivery.”
BUFFALO SAUCE BEGINNINGS
Higgins started his career as a sous chef in Lexington after finishing his culinary arts degree at Sullivan University in Lexington. While he left the restaurant industry because it wasn’t suitable for raising his son as a single dad, Higgins hosted game days at home for friends and family, serving wings, nachos, and other finger foods with his homemade Buffalo sauce. His wings — and especially the Buffalo sauce he used — were everyone’s favorite. That’s when he realized there might be a market for it.
“I made a bottle of my sauce for the buyer at a local co-op store,” says Higgins, who worked full-time as a warehouse project manager and did side hustles to help make ends meet.
The next day, she ordered five cases from him. Motivated, Higgins began offering samples around his hometown, which helped secure a butcher shop and a farm store to carry the sauce with the co-op.
But continuing to build the business in Kentucky wasn’t in the plans.
STARTING FROM SCRATCH IN ARIZONA
As Higgins continued making sauce and sharing samples, his mother-in-law, who lived in Phoenix, was diagnosed with cancer. Relocating to the Valley in 2018 to help care for her meant making the sauce to share in new places.
Farmer’s markets and a few restaurants brought in revenue, but it wasn’t until he demoed the sauce at a vitamin and sports supplement store that business changed. When the store manager couldn’t try the regular sauce on her diet, Higgins made a vegan version.
“I wanted her to be able to try it, especially since she allowed me to sample the sauce at her store,” Higgins explains.
Not only did the manager love it, but non-vegans did, too. Its success prompted Higgins to reach out to vegan grocers across the nation. Food Fight! Grocers, one of the largest vegan chains, contacted him to sell the vegan version of Jupiter Rings Buffalo Sauce. Sprouts stores nationwide began carrying the sauce soon after.
OPENING JUPITER WINGS
Even though Higgins never intended to open a restaurant, he and his older son, Rashaad, opened the first Jupiter Wings restaurant in May 2020 after previously serving wings at Fuego Bistro in Phoenix.

“When Fuego Bistro wasn’t open, I could share my wings and sauces with the public in its space,” says Higgins. “The owner, Jeff Ward, could see the popularity of my offerings and helped me find my first location.”

By October 2020, with help from Rashaad, who inspired the business name, there were four Jupiter Wings locations in the Valley.
“Rashaad loved studying the solar system when he was growing up, and Jupiter Rings is a combination of our initials,” Higgins says.
But in late 2020, a life-changing event for Rashaad pushed Higgins to focus on his son and family.

“At that time, dealing with the restaurants and my son was too much. It wasn’t about business; I was a single father. I had lost my best friend. So, I kept one location, on Northern and 19th Avenue through 2022,” explains
Higgins. But after four burglaries in eight months, Higgins closed the last location.
The break from the restaurant business allowed Higgins to focus on his family and son and make and sell his regular and vegan Buffalo sauces. Today, he sells the spicy Buffalo sauces in nine countries and 4,500 stores, restaurants, and businesses worldwide.
“I hope Jupiter Rings becomes a household name,” he says.
Rashaad is recovering with Higgins’ parents in Kentucky and hopes to open a Jupiter Wings restaurant someday.
While Higgins celebrates the opening of the new location on 91st Avenue and Union Hills in the ABCO Center, he puts family first as a single father, living close to his kids’ schools. He also makes Buffalo sauce and works at the restaurant around their school calendars.
TRADITIONAL WINGS
Everything on the menu can be traditional and made for vegans. “If one family member is a meat eater and the other a vegan, they can get what they want,” he says.
Customers can order the sauce online or buy it at the restaurant. Visit

Skyrocketing Rates and Buyer Strategies: Navigating Today’s Real Estate Climate

The odds of rates decreasing seem better, especially since they’ve just experienced another hike. I had fervently hoped we would see stabilization from last month’s numbers. Sadly, those determining the rates aren’t too concerned about my wishes.
As of this writing, we’re seeing rates soar to 6.625% for FHA and 7.75% for conventional loans. In my two decades in real estate, this is the highest I’ve observed. High rates combined with steep property prices are making it challenging for potential buyers to secure homes they desire. Consequently, many are either postponing their purchases, seeking inventive ways to qualify for homes, or recalibrating their expectations to settle for more affordable properties.

I highlighted it in the past, but it’s worth reiterating: a dip in rates will likely propel prices. Anticipate a surge of sidelined buyers competing fiercely, driving property values upwards. For those who can venture into the market now, the advantage is yours. Fewer homes are receiving multiple offers, opening doors for negotiation, whether it’s getting sellers to cover closing costs or buying down your rate. This current landscape empowers buyers, as no seller wants to turn away a serious and financially capable prospect.

I often discuss statistics, and one I haven’t covered in the “Upper Westsider” is the absorption rate. This metric estimates how long our existing inventory of homes would last without any new listings. Notably, for the first time since last November, we’re seeing this rate rise.
Having declined monthly since November 2022, this slight uptick is

worth monitoring closely. Presently, we’d exhaust our available homes in a little over two months, barring new listings. I pledge to keep you updated on any significant changes.
On another note, wire fraud might be familiar to some, but a word to the wise: always exercise caution when wiring funds. Avoid relying solely on emailed instructions. Ensure you validate them –not via the email’s provided number (it could be the scammer’s).
Sadly, numerous individuals have been swindled out of vast sums because of hackers impersonating lenders, real estate agents, or title companies, using deceptive emails that appear legitimate. Once that money is wired, recovering it becomes an uphill battle. I’m not advising against wire transfers – many of our clients use this method without issue. However, the onus is on you to be meticulous. A couple of extra verification calls can make all the difference.

Benevilla Support Groups Focus on Strengthening the Caregiver

At the Benefitness Adaptive Gym a group of family caregivers meet to share thoughts, feelings, and experiences and piece together support, encouragement, inspiration, and information from each other. Director of Benefitness Lorrie Karn and Coach Rudy Coronado have partnered together to present an interactive series of support groups with a new twist to assist caregivers on their journey. This support group series is called Staying Strong – Strengthening the Caregiver. These unique and interactive sessions will address both the physical and emotional dimensions of caregiving.
“Benevilla knows taking care of someone can be difficult. In fact, studies show over 30% of caregivers will pass away before the person they are caring for. The stress of caregiving can take a significant toll on one’s health,” says Benevilla President and CEO Joanne Thomson. “The reason Benevilla offers these free support groups is to provide caregivers ways to maintain their health and active lifestyles, while introducing them to a reassuring circle of new friends who can relate to the daily ups and downs of caregiving.”
Learning about the physical dimensions of caregiving is essential because caregiving often involves providing direct assistance, support, and care to individuals who may have physical limitations, medical conditions, or disabilities.

Each support group session is designed to demonstrate fitness and functional movement basics promoting the ability to aid in self-care and caring for others.
Each workshop will include specific guidance on safe approaches to back care and physical stability. During the support groups the members will look inside to see how physical strengthening impacts the mental and
emotional side of caregiving. These support groups are offered both in person and by Zoom.
The in-person sessions are led by Coach Coronado on the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Benefitness Adaptive Gym, located on the Benevilla main campus at 16752 N. Greasewood St., in Surprise. Please note the workshops are limited to 12 participants. You can sign up by emailing supportgroups@benevilla.org or calling 623-526-4404.
The Zoom sessions are led by Karn and are held the third Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. You can sign up by emailing supportgroups@benevilla.org to receive the Zoom link.

“Overall, these support groups provide a valuable space where individuals can find understanding, connections, and resources to navigate challenging circumstances,” says Karn. “Caregivers need to be knowledgeable about proper lifting techniques, transferring methods, and equipment used to ensure the safety of both them and the person they are caring for. Improper lifting or transfers can lead to injuries for both the caregiver and the care recipient.”

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal IN“Oppenheimer”
The true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s work towards the creation of the atomic bomb and its social fallout.

"Oppenheimer" is one of the most devastating motion pictures to emerge from the studio system in a long while, both in its presentation of its subject and his actions. This isn't a movie about triumph in the face of potential destruction; it's about a selfish man, nay, a selfish group, whose desire for selfpreservation threatens our very existence. Through clever editing and visuals, in both subtext and overt message, we witness the lead's gradual realization of the consequences of his actions— but only after he has acted to save himself. He complies until the deed is done, selecting his moral stance when it suits him. Meanwhile, the supporting characters either defend or confront him. The entire experience is suffocating yet undeniably brilliant.
“Talk
To Me”
A group of teens go too far in a supernatural game and suffer the consequences.
"Talk To Me" possesses a fury in its terror that's rarely seen. Each scene virtually chokes the air out of you, making you feel as if you're in as much danger as the characters. When the violence ensues, it's visceral; you can't look away. Coupled with a standout performance from newcomer Sophie Wilde, this film provides an experience that's both terrifying and emotionally devastating. It's a new installment in the horror canon that will, hopefully, influence many works to come.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem”
The four mutant brothers have to step into responsibility when the world is at risk.
"Mutant Mayhem" serves well to introduce younger fans to the series, while also paying tribute to longtime aficionados. It's a solid, entertaining flick, bolstered by the chemistry among the four leads who truly capture the
'teenage' essence implied in the title. While the characterization and story may be somewhat lacking and familiar, the unique and thrilling animation and action more than compensate. The humor appeals to audiences of all ages. It's a fun, lighthearted romp, even if there isn't much depth to delve into.
combined with a thunderous score from Bear McCreary, puts the finishing touch on this film. It's a commendable addition to the creature feature genre.

“The Last Voyage of the Demeter”
The crew of the cargo ship Demeter find themselves fighting for their lives upon realizing there’s a stowaway onboard: Dracula.
This film is engagingly surprising, given that it's essentially "Alien" at sea, substituting the Xenomorph for Dracula. It's appeal lies in the direction, which conjures an isolating ambiance, thanks both to the confined space of the ship and the vast emptiness of the surrounding ocean. The narrative delivers a raw brutality that makes viewers flinch, especially a scene in the third act that stands out for its sheer cruelty and viciousness. One drawback is the excessively dark visuals, often obscuring the on-screen action. Nevertheless, the cast's unwavering commitment,

The Flagstaff Trails Passport: FROM FOREST TREKS TO BOUTIQUE RETREATS

As trails lead to discoveries, Flagstaff’s hotel scene unfolds like a trove of stories waiting to be experienced.
Tucked in the vast expanses of the world’s largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest, Flagstaff unveils its newest charm - the Flagstaff Trails Passport. It’s not merely a guide but an invitation to traverse lesser-trodden paths, diving deep into the fabric of a city that fuses nature, culture, and luxury.

The Flagstaff Trails Passport operates with a simple yet engaging premise: check-in at the curated list of local trails, and based on the level of difficulty, earn points. The more you explore, the more rewards you gather. These range from commemorative stickers for just a single trail point, to wooden postcards for 5 points, and even a heartwarming opportunity to give back with a donation made in your name at 10 points to the FTI (Flagstaff Trails Initiative). Passionate hikers hitting the 15-point mark can snag a stylish fanny pack for future adventures.
Each trail in the passport beckons with a unique allure. One-point trails, like the Arizona Trail through Picture Canyon or the Campbell Mesa trail system, offer gentle strolls for those seeking serenity. Meanwhile, the Kachina Trail and the Little Elden Spring Trail, falling under the two-point category, up the ante a bit. And for the thrillseekers, the three-point rank awaits with challenges like the rigorous O’Leary Peak Trail and the lofty Kendrick Mountain Trail.
Little America Hotel Flagstaff emerges as a blend of elegance and wilderness. Located amidst 500 acres of pristine Ponderosa Pine Forest, this AAA Four Diamondrated hotel exudes luxury at every corner. The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the sprawling rooms to the breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. But it’s not all about the outdoors. The Silver Pine restaurant offers culinary delights, a perfect end to a day spent at nearby attractions like Meteor Crater.
Meanwhile, the High Country Motor Lodge resonates with younger travelers. Set just off Route 66, this boutique-style, pet-friendly hotel merges vintage aesthetics with modern vibes. Its proximity to Riordon Mansion and Northern Arizona University adds to its charm. But it’s the evening entertainment, tailored for Millennials and Gen Zs, that truly sets it apart, offering a fresh twist on Flagstaff hospitality.
Not too far off, the Weatherford Hotel stands as a testament to Flagstaff’s rich history. Dating back to 1897, this quirky-chic establishment retains its historic charm while catering to modern sensibilities. It’s a slice of history, positioned a heartbeat away from Route 66, allowing guests to relive the tales of old while reveling in contemporary comforts.
Outside the walls of these establishments, Flagstaff unfolds its myriad offerings. From exhilarating mountain biking trails, checking out the stars at the Lowell Observatory, leaf peeping in autumn’s hues, to visiting The Museum of Northern Arizona (established as a repository for Indigenous material and natural history specimens), to miles of Route 66 that echo with the mountain city’s vibrant culture, there’s something for everyone.
Of course, traversing trails and exploring Flagstaff’s gems can ignite a hunger only the city can satiate. James Beard nominees include Proper Meats + Provisions, Atria Restaurant, and Shift Kitchen + Bar, and are ready to tantalize the taste buds.

In Flagstaff, trails don’t just lead to nature’s wonders, but to boutique retreats, gastronomic adventures, and historic tales. So, grab your passport, let Flagstaff guide your steps and heartbeats, and dive deep into the city’s many tales. They’re all waiting to be written in your travel chronicles.
It’s a good idea to visit the experts at the Visitor Center, 1 E. Route 66, upon your Flagstaff arrival, as they can assist with recommendations and itinerary things to do.
