Surgical services include highly skilled surgeons using the latest technology to perform a variety of surgeries. HonorHealth team members will guide patients through the surgery process from preadmission and testing, to preparing patients about what to expect before, during and after a surgical procedure. They offer education classes for those who are interested. The operating rooms are slightly larger than average, to help make them ultra-flexible. This allows the surgical team to accommodate a greater array of cases in a comfortable environment, with state-of-the-art technology. Whenever possible, surgeons will use minimally invasive surgery to reduce the length of a hospital stay and

shorten healing time. Conditions or injuries that don’t require surgery can also be treated by expert care from HonorHealth’s team of doctors, nurses and support staff at Sonoran Crossing Medical Center. The wide range of continued services include emergency services staffed with residency-trained, boardcertified emergency physicians in a full-service Emergency Department open 24 hours, 7 days a week. A new outpatient building sits on this campus and will include physician offices and additional specialties to serve patients in the north Phoenix and Anthem communities. A hallway connects the outpatient and hospital buildings. This illustrates the unique way they are connecting inpatient and outpatient services, to help them work in close concert with each other, and provide enhanced collaboration and unsurpassed patient care, according to HonorHealth. The existing outpatient center will continue to offer medical imaging that includes CT scans, MRIs and breast health services featuring 3D mammography. “No matter what level of care you need, you can get it at HonorHealth,” says Post. myhyperlocalnews.com

The Joy Bus Charity Expands To Peoria THE LONGTIME LOCAL CHARITY, THE JOY BUS, RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS EXPANDED ITS MORE THAN A MEAL DELIVERY PROGRAM TO INCLUDE HOMEBOUND CANCER PATIENTS IN THE PEORIA AREA. In partnership with Copper Hills Church and the City of Peoria, the Joy Bus and Copper Hills work with medical offices and hospitals to identify patients, and provide freshly prepared, nutritious meals packaged according to food safety guidelines, to be delivered by volunteers to the cancer patients. In addition, Joy Bus assisted in the development of delivery protocols to keep cancer patients safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Copper Hills Church donated $2,500 to help cover the costs of the meals and is providing volunteers to deliver the meals to homebound cancer patients across the Peoria area. The Joy Bus also works with the Phoenix Cancer Support Network to deliver meals to cancer patients as well. Mayor Cathy Carlat and the City of Peoria matched the donation made by Copper Hills Church in support of the partnership and the help it provides to the citizens of Peoria. “The Joy Bus and Copper Hills Church each have an amazing history of uplifting those around them. Now they are coming together and they will be unstoppable in their joint mission to bring lifesaving nourishment to homebound individuals,” says Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria welcomes this program with open arms and it is my pleasure to support their efforts to elevate the lives of those in need.” The Joy Bus was founded in 2011 by Jennifer Caraway after her good friend was diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer. City News Westside Concepts Continues to Grow By Michelle Talsma Everson LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR AND BUSINESS OWNER JOEY LUCIDI LOVES HIS COMMUNITY; SO MUCH SO, THAT HE BOTH LIVES HERE AND SPECIALIZES IN CREATING BUSINESSES HERE, TOO. “I always knew this place was special, but the northwest Peoria area has been out of this world during these difficult times,” Lucidi shares. “The support they have shown is second to none.”

Lucidi is the owner of Westside Concepts, which is home to three Haymaker restaurants, the Social on 83rd, and the newly opened NW Coffee. In addition, Westside Concepts has two more concepts in the works: Fire House Event Center and Cantina Gueros. “While the concepts are all very different, the goal is the same: to be your neighborhood bar or restaurant where you can feel great about bringing family and friends for any and all occasions,” according to Westside Concepts. NW Coffee, located at 28615 N. El Mirage Road, just opened on July 28. “I’ve lived in the Vistancia area since 2008 and I never understood why we didn’t have a little place to hang out; a neighborhood coffee shop of our very own.” Lucidi says that NW Coffee blends right into the community – capturing the business crowd in the morning and local families toward the afternoon. When it comes to Fire House Event Center, he notes that the space is actually the original Peoria firehouse. His brother had it as a distillery and they repurposed it to be an event space due to the lack of event spaces in the area. “I know that during COVID-19 is not the best time

to have an event space,” Lucidi says. “But eventually this will be a big asset for the Northwest Valley.” One of his most highly anticipated concepts is Cantina Gueros, which will open later this year. Lucidi says that the restaurant is poised to be a refreshing blend of modern Mexican cuisine fused with new taqueria-inspired flavors like street tacos, elote, and flavorful nachos. More than six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Lucidi knows that supporting and building within his local community is more important now than ever. “With all of our locations needing to be at 50 percent occupancy, it’s definitely hurt us,” Lucidi says. “But we’re grateful to the community and are doing our best considering all of the challenges. We are overly cautious—all locations are adhering and exceeding all government health and safety regulations.” When asked why he chose to specialize in Northwest Valley and West Valley businesses, Lucidi says, “I live here. It’s beautiful here. This is home.” To learn more about Westside Concepts, visit westsideconcepts.us.

Coffee App Highlights Local Shops, Keeps Caffeine Flowing By Jenna-Lee Neff LOVE IT OR HATE IT, COFFEE IS A HOT TOPIC WITH A BIG INDUSTRY. ONE RAGING DEBATE IS BETWEEN LOCAL MOM-ANDPOP COFFEE SHOPS OR THE LARGER CORPORATE OWNED ENTITIES. For one Phoenix company, not only is the answer local, but they are making it easier than ever to support small businesses through an app created solely to direct the hopelessly caffeinated to the nearest local shop. GoLocal, LLC recently released the GoLocalCoffee app, designed to bring users directly to a shop that fits their needs without having to sort through Google results and guess at which one will fit their particular style. “You know what they say, ‘There’s an app for that,’” says GoLocalCoffee creator Clint Van Wuffen. “Well, if you like your coffee from local coffee shops, now there really is an app for that.” For Van Wuffen, the decision to focus on local shops came after six months of data collection and app development, all to make sure coffee lovers could unite somewhere comfortable during work or play. “I always support local,” Van Wuffen says. “With the GoLocalCoffee app, you will have the most up-to-date information on every local coffee shop near you, no matter where you are.” “As an avid coffee lover, I discovered the need for this app while traveling for work several years ago,” he adds. “Unfortunately, the apps I had available often led me to locations of coffee shops no longer in business. It was frustrating. Although the major chains are always nearby, some people don’t want corporate additives, politics and environment. Instead, they prefer the mom and pop atmosphere along with supporting local businesses. This app will allow people to find a local coffee shop no matter where they are,” Van Wuffen continues. In 2018, WalletHub ranked Seattle, Washington and New York City, New myhyperlocalnews.com

York as top two best coffee cities out of the 100 largest cities in America. So how did Arizona stack up? Phoenix ranked in at 38, a full ten spots behind Scottsdale, which ranked in at number 28. Other cities in the state ranked as follows: Chandler (46), Tucson (56), Gilbert (59), Mesa (80), and Glendale (87). With three rankings in the top 50, it’s no wonder Van Wuffen prefers to keep his coffee routine focused on local, small business offerings.

RENT.COM RECENTLY RANKED CITIES IN THE UNITED STATES WITH THE MOST OPEN SPACE. Three Arizona cities are among the top 20, with Peoria ranking the highest at No. 7 and Surprise and Scottsdale at No. 15 and No. 17 respectively. “With 174 square miles and a population of 172,259, Peoria’s population density is 883 people per square mile,” according to the city of Peoria. “Peoria is known for its scenic Sonoran desert and recreation opportunities, including 740 acres of public open spaces and parks and 27 miles of trails.” Rent.com goes into detail on why it selected Peoria: “Like much of Arizona, the city is filled with golf courses, senior communities, resort living and big box stores, and is also the spring training home of both the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners at the massive Peoria Sports Complex. Much of Peoria is quilted with large golf course communities and planned suburban subdivisions south of Happy Valley Road, but once you’re north of the divide, the vast land becomes filled with dry river beds and endless desert-scape.” To compile the list, Rent.com studied every city in the U.S. with more than

100,000 residents (based on 2018 figures from the U.S. Census Bureau) and divided those population figures by each city’s total land area (according to the Census Bureau’s 2010 land area study). “The cities with the smallest population density were determined to be the best cities for open space,” according to Rent.com. In the same study, the city with the most open space is Anchorage, Alaska and the city with the least open space is New York City, New York. Rent. com staff note that they were inspired to conduct the study because of social distancing protocols. “Social distancing and keeping six feet of space between each other as we wander out into the world is the key for society to creep back towards normal,” cites Rent.com. “But in places like New York, San Francisco and some of the densest cities in America, where there are just so many people, it becomes difficult to find your own space in which to walk, bike, jog or shop.” This isn’t the city’s first time on the national charts. In 2018, Peoria ranked at the No. 1 place to live in Arizona by Money Magazine. It was named 29 overall nationwide.

Real Estate How Multi-family Urban Living Will Survive the Pandemic By Michael D’Andrea THERE IS NO DENYING THAT OUR WORLD HAS BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. Schools have closed, sports and concerts have been postponed, and people have retreated to their homes to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It’s not lost upon multi-family developers, owners and operators that fear, as it relates to a person’s living accommodations, is a very real concern. In fact, most are already diligently working to further flesh out new building and design standards for urban living, especially as it pertains to high density vertically stacked communities. Innovations such as touchless access, package concierge, virtual walkthroughs and tours, as well as voice control technology integration, are less of an ideation and more of a standard as we look forward. As renters continue to be concerned, it’s important to over communicate with them about how communities are taking active precautions to ensure their health and well being during these uncertain times. They want to know that communal spaces are being routinely sanitized, extra attention is paid when cleaning and preparing units for their occupancy, and that clear social distancing protocols are in place and enforced regularly. Integrating these standards into multi-family properties will help to alleviate any fears or hesitations a potential renter may have when choosing where to live. Some development companies like the Related Group, one of the country’s largest real estate conglomerates known for its sophisticated metropolitan rental options, are taking the innovations further. Developers plan to furnish and install ActiveAir Bipolar Ion Generators at all Clubhouse HVAC units as well as automated touchless temperature monitoring screen at the main entry. To protect residents and staff, motion sensor faucets at common area kitchens and bathrooms and plexiglass freestanding sneeze guard at the leasing lobby desks will be implemented. Other myhyperlocalnews.com

common areas will incorporate stainless steel wipe dispenser and waste bins, room floor social distancing graphics, and motion-sensor refillable hand sanitizer dispensers installed throughout the property. Those that are attracted to social connectivity and location convenience are still seeking the advantages of urban living. Many urban properties are close to places of employment and often offer amenities not otherwise found in a residence without paying a significant premium. In the wake of this pandemic, having a clean, well presented and impeccably managed property is becoming a much higher priority than it may have been in the past for both residents and investors alike, and will ensure these multi-family developments continue to thrive. Since people are shopping with a much sharper eye as it pertains to the management, cleanliness and over quality of the community in which they choose to live. Prospective homeowners may also be hitting the pause button and choosing to remain as renters longer. Underwriting of mortgage loans is likely to tighten, forcing higher down payments, higher credit scores and ultimately creating more demand for rental units. The perceived risks and higher expenses related to home ownership may help ensure the current multi-family rental market will survive and thrive. Up to this point, rent collection within multifamily properties have remained healthy with over 93% of apartment households paying their rent, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council. With the market remaining stable, renters will begin to look to invest in the communities that are offering flexible options and adapting to the next “normal” style of living. Michael D’Andrea is the vice president of development at The Related Group. The Related Group is currently breaking ground on Manor Scottsdale, a multi-family development with 286 residential apartment homes that will be available in late 2021.

Sunsolar Solutions Helps Locals To Go Solar And Save Big

By Michelle Talsma Everson

W

hen you think of renewable energy, the first type that may come to mind is solar power. Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity through solar panels—and with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year—Peoria is the perfect place for those considering supplementing some of their energy uses with solar power. In fact, according to recent statistics, solar panel installations are expected to grow 20% in 2020, consolidating the United States’ position as the world’s second-largest market for solar power usage. Better still, according to a recent Zillow.com study, homes with solar sold at an average 4% higher than non-solar homes. Michael O’Donnell, vice president of sales and co-owner of Sunsolar Solutions, says that his company has helped over 6,000 Arizona families go solar—taking the power of the sun and turning it into usable electricity to power their homes. “We started in 2015 and are based right here in Peoria. Since then, we have helped thousands to find custom solutions for their own needs to try to bring their power bill as close to zero as possible,” O’Donnell explains. SunSolar Solutions recently moved into their new headquarters at 91st Avenue and Lake Pleasant Parkway due to rapid growth. O’Donnell compares having solar panels to someone “having their own personal power plant.” He notes that solar panels are often more affordable than people realize, with $0 down and options to purchase or lease the panels. “It’s a zero upfront cost, monthly payments are usually less than you’re paying for electricity, and, in time,

the equipment pays for itself, and you make a monthly profit,” he says. “Your solar system allows you to generate your own clean power and costs less than your current utility company,” according to SunSolar Solutions. “Flexible finance solutions allow you to simply pay by the month, like you do now, but at a lower rate and you start saving immediately.” How O’Donnell and the team at Sunsolar Solutions accomplish this is by meeting with each customer personally to assess how many panels their home will need. “We are upfront and transparent with customers; we don’t sell fake savings and our engineers will make sure that the solar panels work like we say they will,” O’Donnell says. “From the time we first meet with a potential customer, it takes about 60 days until the panels are on the roof and their system is ready.” Some benefits of going solar with Sunsolar Solutions include: • Flexible financial solutions – locals can lease, finance or purchase solar panels • No upfront costs • Customers can save up to 95% off of their electric bill • Protection against inflation and energy cost increases from the electric company • Increasing the property value • Earning a great return on your investment • Going green • Providing clean, reliable energy There are also several tax perks that come with going solar. “By increasing the number of panels, you increase the amount of money that the U.S. government will be investing in the system and into your home,” O’Donnell explains. “If the 100-percent design created a $10,000 subsidy, then the 150-percent design

12 • September 2020 • UPPER WESTSIDER

will produce a $15,000 subsidy. There is no limit to the size of the system and, therefore, the size of the tax credit. By the way, the tax credit is dropping significantly at the end of this year from its current rate, which is 26 percent of the system price. Truth be told (which is something we insist on in our proposals), the result of a properly designed system is a lower monthly and annual cost for the household’s electricity.” O’Donnell shares the story of one of his recent local customers: “Janet from Peoria will pay $33,000 less to pay off the equipment than she would have paid APS. And the money she did spend didn’t turn into utility receipts; it turned into a paid-off $40,000 power plant that at the end of the term will be generating $7,500 worth of electricity per year. She has no doubt whatsoever that her home will be worth substantially more with a paidoff solar system, producing enough power to incur zero billing from APS, than it would have if she had spent much more buying that power from APS over the years.” In addition, for those with APS service, O’Donnell says that there may soon be a limit of 15 percent of their customers per neighborhood who are even allowed to have solar panels. Val Berechet, president of SunSolar Solutions, is urging his sales force to emphasize the urgency of switching because of this limit. He has set up a geographic database that will track what areas are approaching capacity or have already exceeded their maximum, according to SunSolar Solutions. Out of 17 applications submitted to TEP (a Tucson-based power company, similar to APS, used as an example), after the utility started implementing the maximum on May 12, four have already been denied, signaling possibly maxed-out service areas, Berechet explains. He expects

other areas in Arizona to hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity, he adds. “The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona,” according to Sunsolar Solutions. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the secondhighest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, cites the company. O’Donnell shares that the cut off to go solar when you have APS could be as soon as the end of this month. For those who choose to go solar with Sunsolar Solutions, O’Donnell explains that customers can see how much power the panels are generating every day through an easy-to-use app. “On days where there is a lot of sunshine, the panels perform even better,” he says. Added to their knowledge and expertise, O’Donnell notes that SunSolar Solutions is A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and has several high reviews on social media. “Val, Michael, Jack and the whole team were extremely easy to work with,” shares one customer. “No pressure sales, answers to all my questions... and worked with me to develop a system that I wanted installed. My first complete month’s APS bill just came in and I am proud to say it was just 20.66.” O’Donnell says that, for budget conscious consumers, going solar helps keep their same monthly payments years into the future— something that can’t be promised with traditional electric companies. Home The Advantages of Cooking with Natural Gas Contributed by BBQ Island

M

any advocates for the natural gas grill believe that you can taste the meat, vegetables or whatever it is you grill better. Because propane burns so hot, charcoal is usually the primary flavor on a propane-grilled food item. With a natural gas grill, the taste of quality produce can shine through. It’s a matter of taste, really. There are many of the benefits that natural gas grillers shout about. Let’s look at the main ones: ENJOY FEWER FUMES IN THE YARD Propane burns hot, which means a lot of smoke and fumes. When you invite people over to your home, they like to make an effort and dress nicely. Propane will leave guests smelling like propane fumes. Although this might add to the atmosphere for some, many people would prefer less billowing smoke when they’re hosting a barbeque. CONNECT TO YOUR HOME SUPPLY If you already have a connection to the gas mains in your home, installation should be straightforward. Refilling a propane tank involves effort, and there’s

the risk you might be caught short, and it runs out at a crucial moment. With a natural gas grill, the supply is always hooked up, and you don’t need to consider whether it’s running out soon. We could all use one less thing to worry about. EASE OF USE You might need some help initially connecting the grill to the gas pipe. However, once the natural gas grill is installed, you just switch it on and off. There’s no need to drag propane cylinders around or worry about connecting and disconnecting it each time it requires a refill. SAVE MONEY IN THE LONG-TERM Although the upfront cost of rerouting the gas might make the purchase seem expensive, it’s incredibly likely that you’ll save money in the long-term. Natural gas itself is much cheaper than propane because it occurs naturally. Natural gas grills can save a household quite a lot of money over just a year. LOWER ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT Natural gas doesn’t burn as ferociously as propane, which means throwing less dangerous emissions out into the atmosphere. In the short term, it’s better

for you and your family’s lungs to use natural gas because it’s cleaner burning. However, it also makes more sense to use it when you’re looking at the bigger picture. If more people switch over to natural gas, the planet will be a little bit safer. Starting September 1, the Scottsdale BBQ Island location is moving down the street to a bigger showroom. Health Flu in a World of COVID-19: Why This Year’s Flu Shot is Critical By Dr. Tara Ostrom

I

t’s 100+ degrees out, so you may not be thinking about flu season. However, there are sporadic cases of flu here in Arizona, according to community health data from Maricopa County, and already doctors are recommending people make a plan to get their annual flu shot when it becomes locally available. In addition, this year’s COVID-19 pandemic has shaken our nation and, of the many lessons we’ve learned as a result of this public health crisis, one of the most impactful is the importance of immunizations and vaccinations. For example, in part due to COVID-19, 30 percent of Americans said they are now more likely to get a flu vaccine this year. Unfortunately, many adults still are under the mistaken impression that vaccinations are not needed for themselves or their children or are concerned about side effects. The reality is quite the opposite: in the U.S., vaccines have

greatly reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases that once routinely killed or harmed infants, children and adults. This year, seasonal flu vaccination is especially important as the stress on hospitals will be greatest if the COVID-19 and influenza epidemics overlap and peak around the same time. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that cause COVID-19 will both be spreading in the fall and winter. So while vaccination is important, given pandemic concerns, how you go about getting your flu shot may look a little different. Additionally, some common places where people get their flu shots, such as workplaces, may not offer them this year due to social distancing challenges.

ing in order to help ensure that getting a flu shot is safe and accessible for all patients. For example, OptumCare Primary Care has been following the CDC’s guidelines to help ensure safe delivery of care during vaccination visits including: 1. Screening all patients for COVID-19 symptoms both when they schedule their appointment and when they arrive. 2. Assigning a dedicated screener at each clinic entrance checking the temperature of all patients, visitors and staff prior to coming into the facility. 3. Following social distancing protocols while waiting. 4. Ensuring all rooms are disinfected after each patient’s visit. 5. All staff, patients, and visitors wear surgical masks and staff practice respiratory hygiene, cough etiquette and hand hygiene.

To help minimize risks, there are certain safety precautions and new protocols that health care facilities are implement-

This year’s health crisis has made it a critical year for ensuring that you receive your annual flu vaccination.

echnology has a way of changing the way we see things, sometimes overnight. Since COVID-19 has become an unwelcome part of our lives, doctors and patients are creating a new normal for effective treatment. In several short months, the playing field has changed, thanks to telemedicine. In fact, many health care leaders claim the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of telemedicine by at least a decade. It’s not a new concept; doctors have been utilizing this form of digital health since the late 1950s, when a closedcircuit setup connected the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute and Norfolk State Hospital. Fast forward to 2020. With the coronavirus pandemic in full swing, traveling to the doctor’s office has become more difficult, and sometimes, impossible. For people recovering from brain injuries, being able to be treated without leaving home has become just what the doctor ordered. For Christina Kwasnica, M.D., director of neuro-rehabilitation and the Center of Transitional Neuro-Rehabilitation at Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, telemedicine has become an integral part of her arsenal for treating people with brain injuries. “In the past, we used telemedicine to reach remote parts of the state where specialist providers weren’t always available,” she says. “Patients would have to go to a nearby clinic to participate and someone there, like a nurse, would help with the examination. Now, we can see patients virtually in their homes.” Although her patients and staff miss seeing each other in person, and tech issues may emerge, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. “I love seeing the family interactions, their pets, toys, etc.,” says Dr. Kwasnica. “It also helps me to see some of the challenges we face with our patients, such as how much space they live in, and how rural their home may be.”

18 • September 2020 • UPPER WESTSIDER

Laura Johnson suffered a brain injury in 2007. Currently a patient of Dr. Kwasnica’s, she still has difficulty going to appointments. “Because of my brain injury, just driving to the doctor produces a ton of anxiety. From the traffic to the parking, navigating the hospital campus can be overwhelming. Telemedicine has taken away all that stress.” Another enthusiastic adopter of telemedicine is Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona (BIAAZ) Board Member Katie Pierce, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at CoreBalance Therapy. Herself a brain injury survivor, she combines her personal and professional experiences to develop and deliver unique treatment plans for her patients. “Some people had fear of technology, didn’t have Zoom on their phone, or were concerned about privacy. However, after the first time, they loved it… and I was delighted.” Pierce cites several advantages, including treating people in their own environment. “One brain injury survivor patient was falling often at home. In our first telemedicine appointment, I helped him identify fall risks at home, like the throw rugs, and the protruding lip leading to the kitchen. Once we removed the barriers we could, and practiced safely navigating the others, he hasn’t fallen once in the past 10 weeks since we started telemedicine.” Like Dr. Kwasnica, she favors a hybrid approach. “Sometimes there’s no substitute for touch. For instance, if they’re a high-fall risk, they need staff to guard them with upright exercises.” She adds, “I think once people can come back in the clinic, it could be ideal to have one session weekly in the office, and one over telemedicine at home.” Perhaps the most surprising feature of telemedicine is how insurance companies support it. It is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Ed Roth is the communications director for the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona. myhyperlocalnews.com

Tortilla Flat A Piece of Arizona’s Old West History

W

By Jamie Killin

hile Arizona has come a long way from its Old West roots as Phoenix becomes one the country’s largest and fastest-growing cities, there are still places that hold a piece of Arizona’s timeless history and transport its visitors back to simpler times, when the not-yet-state served as a mining destination within relatively unexplored land. One of these places is Tortilla Flat, a Western town in the Tonto National Forest approximately 30 minutes outside of Apache Junction. The town’s history dates back to 1904 when it was established as a stop along the Apache Trail and as a settlement for workers who hand-built the Roosevelt Dam. Over the years, Tortilla Flat has had several iterations – even rebuilding on the opposite side of the road from where it presently sits after a flash flood in 1943. More than four decades later, Tortilla Flat was forced to rebuild yet again, after a 1987 fire that began in the restaurant engulfed nearly the entire town. However, the history hasn’t been all disaster – the town has welcomed famous guests including the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Barbara Streisand. It’s also been home to a zoo and even served as the backdrop of Western films, as well as helping to inspire the book “Thunder God’s Gold,” and subsequent film, “Lust for Gold.” Today, the town is a family-friendly attraction and relic of Arizona’s past. It is a fully independent town and has six residents that call it home. Residents and frequent visitors of Tortilla Flat have seen recent upgrades to the

myhyperlocalnews.com

town property including a revamped menu at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant and new decorative touches. The town continues to maintain its history as it looks toward its next 100 years, refreshing the look of property, partnering with more local vendors for the mercantile, and remaining a familyfriendly destination. During a trip to Tortilla Flat visitors can enjoy scenic mountain views just minutes away from Canyon Lake, taste southwestern cuisine at the restaurant and saloon, shop Arizonainspired gifts at the mercantile, or try prickly pear gelato at the Country Store – known for being the largest purveyor of prickly pear gelato in the world, as well as a destination for necessary goods and one-of-a-kind food items like prickly pear honey and cactus salsa. Before leaving, all Tortilla Flat visitors should try some of the town saloon’s famous chili, which has been made using the same recipe for 80 years and is now incorporated into Tortilla Flat’s Killer Chili Dog, Chili Burger and the classic Killer Bowl of Chili. Tortilla Flat also boasts a museum that is an exact replica of the schoolhouse where the local children gathered to learn in the 1930s. While exploring the small museum, guests will learn about the development of Tortilla Flat, including the history of its owners dating back through to early 1900s. Take a journey out to the Wild West and visit Tortilla Flat, open seven days a week. For more information, visit tortillaflataz.com or call 480-984-1776.

Food Arizona Restaurant Week Dine In or Take Out Returns

A

rizona Restaurant Week has proven to be one of the most beloved and well-attended culinary events around the state. While it has been modified to meet new regulations due to COVID-19, Arizona Restaurant Week: Dine In or Take Out returns for 10 days of culinary exploration from Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27. “We feel not only gratitude but also great pride in the fact that the local dining community has showed up again and again in support of our industry since closures and limited re-opening mandates,” says Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve Chucri. “We are thrilled to see that dining out — whether that means inrestaurant or getting take-out — is still

Bites

such an important part of people’s lives.” The new Fall Arizona Restaurant Week: Dine In or Take Out will operate much like the June event, which debuted the modified format including dine-in, take out and liquor to-go options. Fall Arizona Restaurant Week Dine In or Take Out is intended to allow food enthusiasts to explore new culinary opportunities in any way that they feel comfortable dining while also giving restaurants and local chefs the economic support that they need now more than ever. During the Fall Arizona Restaurant Week: Dine In or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines regarding safety measures and

limited dine-in capacity. Participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated menus that showcase local chefs’ creative talents through innovative dishes. Featuring a unique tasting opportunity apart from their regular menus, restaurants will offer three-course prix-fixe menus for just $33 or $44 per person. Wine pairings to enhance each course are offered at some establishments for an additional cost. Diners can view a complete list of participating restaurants for Arizona Restaurant Week: Dine In or Take Out at arizonarestaurantweek.com. The list is updated and restaurants’ menus are added as participants continue to join the lineup.
