Their target? Aiding the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC) and the invaluable work it performs for families impacted by pediatric cancer.
Throughout the entire month of June, all Barro’s Pizza locations across Arizona will devote a portion of their proceeds, aiming to raise up to $40,000, from the sale of any lunch special to support ACFC’s mission.

“We are so grateful for Barro’s Pizza’s continued support,” says Funari president and founder of ACFC. “Their contribution has had a significant impact on our ability to provide critical services and support to children and their families affected by cancer. We can’t thank them enough for their commitment to our cause and for making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are proud to have partners like Barro’s Pizza in our community.”

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… we have a lot of mouths to feed at the Hagen-Reeg ranch and that’s where I start. I’m up at 4:15 to feed the critters, and then I sit down for coffee and writing time. I like to blog and get my thoughts down on paper while my mind is fresh before the inevitably busy day ahead. I also take this time to check my schedule and get my priorities lined up for the day. I’m out the door by 6 a.m. and have about a 45-minute commute to my office in Scottsdale, during which I listen to podcasts, take conference calls, or (on occasion) just kick back and listen to music. At work, my day is spent managing a bustling team of 41 employees, taking meetings, and conference calls––all the things you would expect of someone in my position. I hit the gym around 3:30 p.m. and then I’m home free to feed all the hungry mouths once again and spend quality time with my husband.
MY FAMILY IS… amazing. My folks still live in Payson, in the same house my sister and I grew up in. I visit them as often as I can. My husband is an amazing, patient, and dedicated man who supports my career and keeps me grounded.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… coffee.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… oh my goodness, so many people motivate me. If I had to choose just one, it would be my husband. He does everything (from the job site to the gym, to how he brushes his teeth) to the max. While he’s so forgiving of others’ faults, there is absolutely no room for mediocrity for himself. It makes me want to give 110% to everything I do too!
THE PERFECT DAY IS… coffee, gym, brunch, ride, bustle around the house, dinner out with my husband.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… I haven’t been in the area very long and am not familiar with many nonprofits around here just yet! But I have a soft spot for animal rescues, particularly anyone taking in equines.
MY LIFE IS… a rollercoaster! But not like a scary one that sends you plummeting to the ground at an unsafe speed – more like one of the fun rides that features lots of twists and turns and takes you through random rooms with different genres of music and characters. I’ve had the unique opportunity to play a lot of different parts in my 30 years so far, and I remain excited and ready for what comes next.
HI, MY NAME IS… Mary Hagen.
I’VE LIVED IN THE WEST VALLEY FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the community!
We have horses, and properties with pastures in Arizona. Now that we’re settled in, we still love our big grass pastures and mountain views but have really fallen in love with the small town feel of our little corner of the
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “The Holiday!” It’s a phenomenal, cheesy, romantic comedy that only scored 51% on Rotten Tomatoes but I love it. It’s what I call an “easy watcher.” Not too sappy, not outrageous, just fun to watch and with a sweet storyline. It’s well cast, and I love the soundtrack. It’s 100% in my book!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… the president. There’s still time!
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Hurts So Good,” by John Mellencamp.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… easy answer, my pit bull, Lady. She was technically a rescue, but the way she came to us was a wonderful surprise, so I’ve always considered her a gift from the universe (and my husband for finding her)!
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… anywhere tropical with great food and deep-sea fishing!
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… every day is a new day. My dad used to say that to me before I went to sleep at night, and it always stuck with me as a reminder that life goes on no matter what gets in your way.
The Peoria Fire-Medical Department is calling on all aspiring young firefighters with the announcement of its second annual Youth Fire Academy, which will take place from July 10 to July 13. The program invites high school students and recent graduates aged between 17 and 19 to experience firsthand what it’s like to be a firefighter or EMT, all free of charge.
The Youth Fire Academy is an exciting opportunity for young men and women to gain invaluable insights into the fire service as a potential career path. The four-day program will feature physical training, educational classes, and realistic fire/EMS simulations. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to interact with and learn from the onduty crews of the Peoria Fire-Medical Department.
Safety, as always, is the department’s top priority. All participants will be supervised by the highly trained professionals of the Peoria Fire-Medical Department throughout the duration of the camp. As a part of ensuring safety, campers are required to bring their personal blue pants, black belt, and safety boots/shoes to be worn as part of the uniform.
In addition to the engaging activities and training, lunch will be provided each day of the academy. However, this immersive experience is not just about the physical aspects of firefighting. It’s also about instilling responsibility, fostering a selfstarting attitude, and encouraging full commitment. As such, attendees are expected to participate in the entire program without any planned absences.
Due to the intimate nature of the program, the academy is limited to just 15 participants. All interested individuals must ensure their application packets, which include medical information, physician clearance for participation, assumption of risk, and waiver requirements, are complete and legible. The deadline for applications is June 9.
Applications can be mailed, emailed, or hand-delivered to the Peoria FireMedical Department. All applicants will be notified of their status by June 20.
For more information about the Youth Fire Academy, including application details and a detailed program overview, visit peoriaaz.info/ youthfireacademy. Alternatively, you can contact Lisa Neely at (623) 7737916 or via email at jesse.anderson@ peoriaaz.gov.
With this second annual Youth Fire Academy, the Peoria Fire-Medical Department continues its mission to inspire the next generation of firefighters and EMTs, providing them with a unique and comprehensive introduction to the fire service.
Is your child a budding author with a tale to tell? The Peoria Public Library system is inviting young writers to let their imaginations soar with the announcement
of the StoryWalk Story Writing Contest. Children aged between 6 to 8, 9 to 10, and 11 to 12 are encouraged to submit their original picture books for a chance to have their works featured across all three StoryWalks in Peoria.
Originating in 2007, StoryWalk is an innovative concept developed by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. It is a unique blend of outdoor play and reading, designed to spark children’s imaginations and encourage physical activity. StoryWalk installations, which have been set up in 50 states and 13 countries, typically feature laminated pages from a children’s book attached to wooden stakes or metal stands along an outdoor path. As participants stroll along the trail, they are directed to the next page in the story and encouraged to engage in a related activity. This innovative approach offers everyone the chance to experience the library in an unconventional setting, merging the joy of reading with the beauty of nature.
The contest will run from June 1 through July 31, with applications available from June 1 at all local Peoria Public Libraries. The contest provides an exciting
opportunity for children to showcase their creative writing skills, with the potential to see their stories come to life in the community parks.
Every page of the selected story will be displayed along the walking paths at all three Peoria Community Parks (Paloma, Rio Vista, and Pioneer), offering an immersive reading experience for all park visitors. This is a unique opportunity for young authors to contribute to their community and inspire others with their creativity.

familyAs this school year came to a close, two brothers from Glendale marked significant milestones in their academic journeys. Joseph Rickey, the youngest sibling, graduated from kindergarten at Great Hearts Archway Classical Academy Glendale, 23276 N. 83rd Ave., Peoria, while his older brother, Jacob, donned his cap and gown as a senior at Great Hearts Glendale Preparatory Academy, 23276 N. 83rd Ave., Suite 1, Peoria.
For the Rickey family, the year held special significance as they celebrated these two graduations. Their father, Jon Rickey, has been the athletic director at Great Hearts Academies for years, and he had the chance to witness his own children reach major academic milestones together.
Jon recounts some special memories involving his two sons: “There was one
funny and one sentimental [moment]. We were at Jacob’s basketball game and Joseph came running up to us to say, ‘You know, the Griffin (Glendale Prep mascot) isn’t real.’ We asked him how he knew that, and he said, ‘I saw his head off in the storage room, he can’t be real!’ It took moments like this for reality to hit. Kindergarteners.”
Jacob had been involved in various extracurricular activities, including football, basketball, drama productions, and being a student mentor during his time at Glendale Prep. As for his brother Joseph, Jacob had been a supportive figure, helping him with homework, teaching him valuable life lessons, and modeling hard work both in the classroom and on the athletic field.
Jon recalls a touching moment from Jacob’s last home football game: “This one still brings some tears to my eyes. For Jacob’s last home football game, and last game of the season in late October,
the school had the traditional Senior Night. The extended family walked him onto the field, which is customary, and we had his ceremony. He even scored a 60-yard touchdown on that night! The next morning, he had left early to do his gear turn-in and team meetings. I came to his room, and I saw Joseph in there standing and looking around, very forlornly, in Jacob’s room. I asked him what he was doing, and he said, ‘Well, that’s it, Jacob is now in college, and I won’t see him again.’ I was trying not to laugh and not cry at the same time. It was truly one of the sweetest things, and I’m really not very sentimental. He truly believed that with Jacob’s Senior Night the night before, that he was gone and not coming back!”
Both Joseph, Jacob, and their brother Josh, a sophomore, grew and developed thanks to the support of teachers, staff, and their family’s involvement in the school community. Jon emphasized the importance
of teachers who genuinely care for their students and push them to be better.
As Jacob moves on to the next phase of his life, he plans to carry the values of hard work, motivation, and appreciation for educators that he learned at Glendale Prep. He also hopes to give back by coaching sports and mentoring other students, just as his teachers and coaches had done for him.
Reflecting on his sons’ achievements, Jon offers advice for other families, saying, “It is definitely a commitment by all that are involved in the house...Having a full slate of athletics for both middle and high school, along with fine arts and other opportunities, it is well worth the commitment!”
This graduation season, the Rickey family celebrated not just academic accomplishments but also the enduring bond between brothers who had supported and learned from each other throughout their shared educational journey.
AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office are inviting kindergarten through 12th grade students across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the “My Picture-Perfect Career” photo contest.
Summer vacation is an ideal time for families to talk with children about what they’d like to be when they grow up and explore potential career interests with trips to Arizona libraries, museums, and other local hands-on learning resources. Taking and sharing pictures while discussing job aspirations is the goal of this summer’s “My PicturePerfect Career” Photo Contest, which is open to students through 12th grade across Arizona.
Students are encouraged to take or pose for a photo representing themselves in their dream job. They can take a selfie, pose for a picture, invite friends and family into the shot or come up with their own creative ideas. The final photo just needs to visually communicate their vision of a dream job – whether the participant is in front of or behind the camera! A total of 10 winners will be selected across the state and receive $529 towards opening a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from across Arizona’s 15 counties.
The goal of the photo contest is to increase awareness of the AZ529 Plan and pave a path for
another generation of students to achieve their post-secondary dreams through proper savings. Winners will be honored by Treasurer Kimberly Yee during a special ceremony at the state capitol in September. Be advised that by submitting photos to this contest, you acknowledge and agree that the photo may be publicly displayed.
In total, $5,290 will be distributed to 10 students to assist in saving for their educational plans beyond high school. Parents or guardians of the winners will be responsible for setting up an AZ529 account if an account does not already exist. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school, and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.

Peoria Unified School District’s superintendent, Dr. Jason Reynolds, announced in late May that he has made the difficult decision to seek the board’s approval to retire on June 30.
“I have been blessed to be part of the Peoria Unified family for the past four years and I will always be grateful for my time here. The people in this district are some of the most
passionate and dedicated educators I have ever worked with and are deeply committed to the success of our students,” said Reynolds. “I was called to be a public-school teacher 33 years ago and I remain a passionate teacher to this day. While this is bittersweet, it gives me great comfort to know that the incredible teachers, support staff and administrators will remain deeply committed to the district’s vision so that every student, every day, will be prepared to shape tomorrow.”
After more than 30 years in public education,
Reynolds looks forward to exploring new opportunities. Reynolds joined Peoria Unified in 2019 as deputy superintendent and was appointed superintendent in 2020 following the retirement of Linda Palles Thompson. During his time as superintendent, the district navigated a global pandemic and was one of the first districts to reopen to in-person education for students.
The Governing Board met in Executive Session on May 22 and will soon schedule meetings to discuss and appoint an interim superintendent.
Want a reason to play with your food? While adults may discourage us from doing so, food items can teach us a lot about science, especially chemistry. And it can be fun too! In this activity, you’ll learn about how vinegar and baking soda create a reaction and form carbon dioxide bubbles. When a raisin joins the (dance) party, the bubbles that are formed stick to the raisins and their many wrinkles, causing them to float to the top. When the raisins reach the top, bubbles tend to pop and release the gas which, in turn, allows the raisins to sink back down to the bottom.
Supplies
• 1 clear plastic cup
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 to 7 raisins
• Water
• Vinegar Challenge
• Fill you cup about halfway with water
• Add one teaspoon of baking soda and stir until dissolved in water
• Add 6 to 7 raisins into the cup
• Very slowly pour in vinegar until cup is three-fourths full
• Watch the raisins dance
What did you think would happen to the raisins? Did they surprise you? What happened? What do you think is causing the bubble to form? What type of gas is it? You can try this experiment with other small fruits–how do you think the reaction would
be different if you used grapes? Or a blueberry. What about a cherry tomato?
There are lots of different ways to learn about science in your very own home. Science is all around us, and as long as you ask and have supervision, it is great to be curious about what other experiments you can conduct. Visit azscience.org and find experiments just like this!

Everyone speeds from time to time. Whether on purpose or by accident, it happens. Often speeding is a minor civil violation. While a civil violation may cost you your hard-earned money, it is not considered criminal and does not go onto your permanent criminal record. Over the years I have had clients ask, “Will this stay on my record?” The answer is, if it’s criminal, and you’re found guilty, it will follow you for the rest of your life with few exceptions. Although most of the time speeding is civil in nature, Arizona can charge you as a criminal for speeding.
HERE ARE FIVE WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN BECOME A CRIMINAL JUST BY SPEEDING.
1. Speeding more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit on freeways, residential districts, and business districts can get you a criminal speeding ticket.
2. Exceeding 35 miles per hour while approaching and going through a school zone. I think everyone frowns upon speeding past children, and Arizona can charge you as a criminal for doing so.
3. If you are aggressively driving in such a manner that you violate multiple civil traffic laws, it is possible for you to be charged criminally with aggressive driving. An aggressive driving charge includes speeding and a combination of two of the following: a) Failure to obey traffic control devices, b) Overtaking and passing another vehicle on the right side of shoulder of a road or highway, c) unsafe lane change, d) following another vehicle too closely, or e) failure to yield the right-of-way. In addition to the criminal charge, you could lose your privilege to drive for 30 days.
4. Driving recklessly is slightly more vague but easy enough to figure out. If you drive in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property, then you could get charged with a class
2 misdemeanor. Reckless refers to a mental state of mind. Arizona defines this as being aware of a substantial and unjustifiable risk and making the decision to ignore the risk.
One example I have seen prosecutors pursue before would be using drugs and then driving. But wait a second - wouldn’t that be Driving Under the Influence (DUI)? Yes, but you can also be simultaneously charged with reckless driving because the state of Arizona recognizes these as two distinct and separate crimes. Reckless driving can also be combined with our next way to become a criminal while driving.
5. Racing. Humans love competitions involving speed, whether it is horses and chariots, NASCAR, or just a souped-up Mustang and everything in-between. Personally, I love watching supercross and really any dirt bike related races. All sanctioned races take place on a closed course. A closed course is closed to the public and the risk of racing stays with those who are racing. When a person decides to race down a public roadway or highway it is a criminal act. Racing doesn’t necessarily equal speeding. The statute states that if you participate in any manner, you can be charged. This means that even if you spin your tires at a stop light in anticipation of racing the person next to you it could result in a criminal charge.
Any time someone faces the implications of a criminal charge it is important to consult with an experienced attorney.

Solar panels are a lot less expensive than they were a decade ago. But they’re still an investment and determining whether you can install a system can be daunting — something Val Berechet learned firsthand.
His journey with solar started in 2014 when he invested in a system for his home that wasn't correctly installed. While permits and inspections were delayed over eight months, he learned the ins and outs of solar installation, let go of the company installing his system, and reinstalled it himself. In 2015, Berechet put his frustrating experience into co-founding Sunsolar Solutions and has since helped more than 10,000 homeowners go solar by providing education, honest quotes, reputable installations, and transparency.
Berechet says people tend to hold a few common misconceptions about solar panels, which prevent them from making sound financial decisions.
"We help homeowners understand how solar panels work, choose a system that meets their needs, and know what to expect," says Berechet, president and CEO of Sunsolar Solutions. "Unfortunately, many companies set the wrong expectations or
sell smaller, cheaper systems while telling the homeowner it will perform like a larger system. This gives our industry a black eye."
As chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee for the AriSEIA, the Arizona chapter of the national Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Berechet helps educate the public and key decision-makers about solar, storage technologies, electrification, and energy efficiency. The nonprofit 501(c)(6) trade organization also focuses on promoting professionalism within the industry and helping create and protect public policies that support the sector and its customers.
“A lot of new companies that come from out of state are not educated about the market, such as how SRP and APS utility companies work with solar,” says Berechet. “It's more complex here than it is in other states. There will be bad apples in every industry, but I don't think that's the issue. A lot of it is misinformation and miseducation on the sales side.”
Berechet says homeowners can also help by asking the right questions, such as “How will my utility bill be impacted after I go solar?” He stresses that technology and resources to accurately estimate the effects of solar are available today, and homeowners
should not accept vague answers when looking into solar.
Also, many solar companies don’t install the solar panels they sell, continues Berechet. Sunsolar Solutions sells and installs, providing multiple design options and sharing the total cost upfront so customers can pick the best system for their budget.
“Because we are local and hands-on, we walk the customer through the entire process and handle every aspect of installation,” Berechet says. “Our customers know what to expect because we ensure our sales reps are properly educated and explain it well.”
Some of the frequent expectations Sunsolar Solutions customers have, says Berechet, include grid reliance, energy output, roof impact, weather and climate requirements, the lifespan of solar panels, and the return on investment.
While the answers can be complicated, Sunsolar Solutions helps customers understand everything from the get-go — from how many solar panels are needed to meet energy usage to factors about the roof, such as age and tree cover.
“One of the important things in our process is to
get the correct information from the homeowner,” Berechet explains. “We need to see customers’ electric bills or at least get the last 12 months of electric usage because solar systems are built around how much power a house uses.”
Once Sunsolar Solutions understands a customer’s home’s energy usage, it puts together a detailed quote, including incentives.
Berechet says there are federal and state tax incentives to offset the upfront costs, which Sunsolar Solutions’ energy consultants ensure customers don’t miss if they qualify. For instance, the Federal Solar Tax Credit allows eligible homeowners to reduce the taxes they owe by up to 30% of their solar panel installation cost from their federal income taxes. If the homeowner already paid their taxes through their employer’s W2 withholding, they’ll receive a check back from the IRS. Consider state incentives, too, like in the Valley, which provides a 25% tax credit, up to $1,000, for purchased systems.
After Sunsolar Solutions does a site survey, it puts together an engineering plan, gets permits from the city or county, and seeks approval from the utility company. Then it’s time for the system to be installed.
“We're big on installing things the right way, using the right equipment and installation methods,” Berechet says. “We even have an internal quality control specialist that checks the system post-install.”
If Sunsolar Systems’ quality control specialist approves the installation, the city is called to do its inspection. If everything looks good, Berechet says they file a few remaining documents with the utility company, and then, after that, the system gets turned on.
“It depends where you live; if you live in a city where the permitting process is quicker, installation can be completed within a matter of weeks, and the entire process is done within two months,” Berechet says.
Throughout the entire project, Sunsolar Solutions customers have a dedicated project specialist as their point of contact who answers questions and keeps them updated about the timeline.
Valley residents looking into solar can soon make the Consumer Protection Committee of the AriSEIA their point of contact. One of its significant initiatives, says Berechet, is ensuring consumers are educated so they can protect themselves by asking the right questions about it. Also, the committee is assembling a preferred installer program with local utility companies, much like the one SRP offers, which Sunsolar Solutions is a part of.
“If a solar customer doesn't have a good experience, they often call the utility company and complain about it,” explains Berechet. “So, our interests are aligned, and we need to make sure homeowners understand solar and have the right expectations.”

Raising a family and focusing on a relationship is tough work and when you add in business to the mix, things can get downright crazy. Just ask the duo behind the Taekwondo martial arts studio Keene’s ATA, located in Glendale.
When Senior Master Nick Keene and one of his sons began training at the school in 1997, little did he and his wife know just how much the martial arts lessons would completely change their lives around. Within a year, Senior Master Nick left his engineering career behind and he, along with his wife, Ann Keene, became owners of the school, taking a huge leap of faith when one of the original owners wanted to sell his share.
“We saw the potential of the business
since we were one of the very first businesses to open in the area and it was something we could do as a family. The dream of owning your own business was appealing. Honestly, we had no clue what we were getting into and how difficult being a small business owner would be,” shares Ann. “You are the instructor, the janitorial staff, the salesperson, the accountant, and everything in between. The business side was a rude awakening.”
Now, more than 25 years later, despite their own children growing up and moving onto other things in their lives, the couple still enjoys teaching the next generation of martial artists.
“We see the impact we have had on the community creating victors not victims and creating leaders for tomorrow through taekwondo training today,” says Nick. The couple says one of the biggest
compliments and joys they have is seeing families grow through time.
“We have kids that began training with us back when we started that continue to train with us today. These students have challenged themselves and are now productive adults in the community –many of whom have started families of their own. We’ve also seen students we had many years ago come back years later with their own children, entrusting us to instill the same lifelong lessons,” says Ann.
One of the biggest lessons that the couple tries to instill in students is that you must put forth the effort to reap the rewards. This is something the Keene’s have carried with them throughout their own lives, especially Nick, who comes from a military family.
“We have found when students are
pushed, they can excel far beyond what they thought they could ever achieve,” says Ann. “We know that we aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you want to succeed or your child to succeed, then this is the place to train.”
The martial arts school isn’t just a place of business for the Keenes anymore, it is much more.
Says Nick, “Our Taekwondo families have become a part of our family. We have been blessed to have met so many wonderful people in our community. We especially love it when former students stop by to visit and tell us how their training impacted them and how the leadership skills they learned are carried into their careers. It’s humbling and very gratifying.”
The studio is located at 6740 W. Deer Valley Rd., Glendale. For more information, visit keenesata.com or call 623-561-5125.

Growing up in the Babe Ruth era, Myra Blaker has been a lifelong baseball fan. After moving to Phoenix from Chicago, she pledged loyalty to her hometown Arizona Diamondbacks — even posting their game schedule on her front door. In the weeks leading up to their home opener at Chase Field, all she talked about was baseball.
As a surprise, Blaker’s Hospice of the Valley care team made a great play — pitching her as the inaugural guest of D-Backs Wishes for Seniors. This special program grants once-in-a-lifetime experiences to deserving seniors and is sponsored by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation and Arizona Complete Health.
“We are so honored to partner with the devoted nurses and social workers at Hospice of the Valley to deliver these incredible experiences,” says Debbie Castaldo,
D-Backs’ senior VP for Corporate & Community Impact. “It was wonderful to see Myra rooting for her team. She was living her best life!”
On the night of the game, the team covered all the bases. Blaker, who turns 101 in September, got the VIP treatment — premium parking, great seats, free food and drinks, including a beer she insisted on finishing! Hospice of the Valley nurse Kelly McGovern and social worker Renee Adams came along to monitor her oxygen and make sure Blaker had the time of her life. Paul Piperata, her caregiver at Weyrich Health Care Center in Scottsdale, also joined the fun, and kindly arranged for a seven-passenger van with wheelchair access.
As they took their seats near the on-deck circle, Blaker whispered, “Look how close we are! We can even see what they keep in their pockets!”
Blaker’s daughter, Laura, says she couldn’t remember
seeing her mom so excited. “The D-Backs hit a homerun with Mom. She loved every single minute and never stopped smiling!”
About the fifth inning, McGovern started to wonder if the centenarian might want to leave early. “Not a chance,” Blaker insisted. “I won’t miss a single play!” Just when the baseball fanatic thought nothing could top the magical evening, D-Backs legend Luis Gonzalez came by to visit. “I can’t believe they are making such a fuss over me!” she gushes.
“She will never forget this,” says Adams. “At Hospice of the Valley, we’re honored to help make our patients’ dreams come true. We are so grateful to be part of this tremendous night.”

The West Valley is home to Billy’s Place, a unique haven that provides free grief support for children. The center, currently one of the few of its kind, is set to expand its vital services thanks to a generous $10,000 grant from Thunderbirds Charities.
Billy’s Place, 21448 N. 75th Ave., Suite 5, Glendale, has carved a niche. It serves children by offering ongoing support/education groups each month, which include the loss of a parent, loss of a sibling, young adult grief, and traumatic loss groups, as well as a kicking back night for children only.
The programs at Billy’s Place are uniquely structured to cater to children’s needs, utilizing play, art, storytelling, music, and conversation to facilitate discussions around death and loss.
With the financial boost from Thunderbirds Charities, the center anticipates expanding its reach to over 6,500 individuals. The expansion will
enhance access to critical support and resources throughout their grief journey, positively impacting their mental and physical health. The funding will also underpin the growth of all current programs, school-based training, and community outreach.
Expressing her gratitude for the charity’s support, Executive Director of Billy’s Place Kris Friedman, emphasizes the importance of their mission. “We are so thankful to Thunderbirds Charities for their commitment to children and grief in Maricopa County,” she says.
Friedman acknowledged the bitter-sweet nature of the center’s growth, noting the unfortunate circumstances that lead families to seek their support. However, she also profoundly appreciative for the opportunity to assist these families on their challenging journeys.
With this grant, Billy’s Place is set to continue its important work, providing solace and support to grieving children in the West Valley. To learn more, visit billysplace.me.

Most of us know someone who has hearing loss. Some of you may be experiencing hearing loss yourself. Oftentimes people dismiss signs of hearing loss as “no big deal.” In reality, hearing loss is a very big deal. Hearing loss can impact all the areas of your life, including relationships, health, and safety. It can also be linked to depression and memory loss, an early indicator of dementia.
While the likelihood of developing dementia exists, there are ways to prevent hearing loss:
• Protect your ears. Keep music or TV volumes low, especially when you are wearing headphones. If you have headphones on and someone else can hear your music, the volume is too high.
• Don’t ignore your hearing loss. If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, see a hearing healthcare professional right away to start combating the symptoms.
• Tackle the hearing loss head on. Don’t assume hearing loss will go away on its own. It won’t. The sooner you get assistance with your hearing loss, the more likely you are to possibly prevent early dementia.
• Utilize technology. If you have a hearing aid, wear it as much as possible. You can also consider other hearing interventions including cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, amplified telephones, or captioning.
As you begin to age, access to valuable resources is critically important. However, an Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) survey found that older adults report that they are concerned with where to find these resources. Survey respondents indicated that they need information on general health and wellness as well as information on memory loss and dementia, pharmacy benefits, and access to mental health services. Other important resources mentioned included assistance with maintaining their
independence, access to caregivers fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and access to attorneys and estate planners.
As such, ACDHH is launching its Age of Access initiative designed to be a one-stop destination for resources, information, and programming for Arizona’s older adults who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss. An online survey is in the field right now to gain additional information regarding the needs of the community and how best to provide access to these resources. Take it here: https://bit.ly/acdhhsenior.
Respondents that participated in preliminary research conducted by Gallaudet University indicated that there is a lack of access to home health care aides (caregivers) that can sign or have awareness about deaf people’s needs. Therefore, in the fall of 2023, ACDHH, in partnership with the university, will conduct focus groups on this as well.

Anticipated to create a significant landmark in North Peoria’s urban expansion, Five North at Vistancia is slated to feature a main street restaurant/retail corridor, hospitality, office, healthcare, education, and an employment core in its initial phase. The development will also welcome an additional 1,500 luxury mid-to-high-density residential units, reflecting the same high-quality, desert-inspired design elements that have become synonymous with the distinguished Vistancia community.
An extension of Vistancia’s hallmark Discovery Trail is planned, promising a linear park connection throughout the property. This feature will create a well-integrated community encouraging outdoor activities.
The developers aim to diversify housing offerings and lifestyle opportunities within the Commercial Core – a 320-acre area presently zoned mixeduse. With Five North at Vistancia, they anticipate a major amendment to the zoning entitlement or planned community district (PCD).
Strategically nestled adjacent to the 36mile Loop 303/Bob Stump Memorial Parkway at Lone Mountain Parkway, the development ensures easy access
to the entire West Valley, connecting to major freeways including 1-10, US60, and I-17. Its prime location, coupled with a diverse selection of residential homes, unmatched amenities, and exceptional quality of life, further solidifies Vistancia’s reputation as a desirable destination.
Construction of this 320-acre commercial and retail destination is set to commence in early 2024. As the final lifestyle community within the 7,100acre Vistancia, Five North at Vistancia aims to bring a fresh surge of unique, creative experiences for residents and visitors alike. Its vision is to establish itself as a vibrant destination offering a pedestrian-friendly connection to novel experiences.
Located a mere 10-minute drive from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) in North Phoenix, Five North at Vistancia sits in a promising zone for workforce development. With 462,500 workers within a 30-minute drive time, as indicated by the city of Peoria Economic Development’s office, the region is prepared for substantial employment growth within the next five to 10 years.
Enhancing local community life, the development is expected to bolster the already impressive quality of life the West Valley offers. The contribution from Five North at Vistancia’s new commercial core will likely result in an increase in local tax revenue, enabling the city to expand vital services such as fire and police in North Peoria.
As Five North at Vistancia evolves, developers are dedicated to continuous community engagement. The next community meeting is slated for Wednesday, June 7, at the Mountain Vista Club gymnasium, 29701 N. Sunrise Point, Peoria, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This open forum will provide a valuable platform for dialogue, reinforcing the collective commitment to making Five North at Vistancia a true gem in North Peoria’s urban landscape.
As we bid welcome to the summer season, let’s also extend a warm greeting to the continuation of our robust real estate market. Indeed, the heat of the market is matching our rising temperatures, and that is definitely good news!
Last month, we witnessed a significant 10% drop in our total inventory. This month, the trend continues with another 8% decline. Concurrently, homes going under contract have spiked almost 3%. With fewer homes available and a growing pool of buyers, the stage is set for an escalation in prices.
If you thought these figures were as scorching as an August day in Phoenix, brace yourself for the even hotter numbers from zip code 85383! Homeownership in this area is like owning a golden goose, as your equity is skyrocketing. Over the past month alone, our inventory plummeted a staggering 11%, while the number of homes going under contract soared by 9.6%. Impressively, these figures outpace the entire MLS by a significant margin.
It’s no secret that the three pillars of real estate are location, location, location, and we undoubtedly hit the jackpot here in the Upper West Side! Already boasting fantastic shopping options, an array of incredible restaurants, and a tight-knit community, we are now also adding a plethora of higher-paying jobs with the new chip plant. Many of these employees are snapping up homes, and a significant proportion are opting for properties within
85383. This influx is giving our property values a notable boost.
Moreover, I’ve noticed that tasteful updates to older homes are reaping rich rewards. Buyers are willing to pay premium prices for the contemporary feel of renovated homes. If you’re contemplating a revamp of your kitchen, bathroom, flooring, or even backyard landscaping, now is an opportune time. You can either sell for top dollar post-renovation or revel in the updates until you’re ready to sell. I can’t count the number of sellers who, after sprucing up their homes for sale, expressed regret over not doing so earlier to enjoy the fruits of their labor. If you need any recommenda tions for reliable contractors or handyman services, I’m here to help!
While we won’t be issuing an update in July, we’ll return in August with two months’ worth of real estate news. In the meantime, if you have any queries, feel free to reach out to me at frank@mayteam.com. I’m here to provide the answers you need. Here’s wishing you a sunny and enjoyable summer!

SUDOKU
A small family is trapped in their apartment building when a demonic force is unleashed with the ability to possess.
While the “Evil Dead” series may not be a regular topic of conversation among the general public, its deep roots in the horror genre and accessibility for newcomers make it truly special. “Rise” continues this legacy, embracing the more serious tone of the original film and the 2013 iteration, while maintaining the distinctive excess of content and action that sets the series apart. This is a hard-hitting piece that conveys the pain and terror of its characters in a way that will make you cringe. Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan deliver stunning performances as sisters, with Sutherland’s compelling portrayal of a possessed character and Sullivan’s heroic essence reminiscent of Ash and Mia, while also bringing motherhood themes into focus. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat, holding nothing back, which is a major plus. It stands as a worthy addition to one of the greatest horror series of all time.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
The Guardians must face their greatest enemy yet to save one of their own.
James Gunn is a constant reminder of the creative possibilities inherent in the comic book film genre. Despite certain shortcomings, the third installment of his Guardians saga is among his most compelling work to date. Gunn escalates the level of intense action and mature content in a way that complements the overall narrative and tone, while still harmonizing with the previous films. It’s the empathetic core of the story that keeps us invested, as the cast subtly conveys their characters’ growth through nuanced changes in their movements and vocal inflections. Importantly, the film remains clear about its identity and effectively concludes the overarching themes of the trilogy. It’s a truly remarkable piece.
A detective uncovers a supernatural element in the search for his daughter.
“Hypnotic” is a film that, despite having ample talent both on-screen and behind the scenes, struggles to achieve its ultimate, yet confused, objective. Director Robert Rodriguez, known for infusing style and charisma into his low-budget projects, seems to fall short here, with the film’s low-cost aesthetic lacking the charm of his previous works. The cast, including
usually impressive actors like Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, appear disengaged or unenthusiastic about the story, though William Fitchner gives a notably overthe-top performance. The film aims for complexity in its structure but ends up being more incoherent and confusing, and its attempts to draw parallels with filmmaking feel underdeveloped. There’s a glimmer of an intriguing concept in the third act, but it’s undermined by a hurried conclusion. Overall, it’s an unfortunate squandering of potential and talent.

Dom and his family’s past actions come back to haunt them, with a new foe hellbent on revenge.
By now, fans know what to expect from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and “Fast X” delivers the anticipated thrills, albeit in a somewhat overstuffed package. The consistently strong performers (Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang) maintain their high standards, while others (Ludacris, Gibson) have yet to master their craft, even after two decades. The film’s abrupt shifts between narratives, some of which appear only briefly before a lengthy absence, may disrupt its flow. Nevertheless, the film’s charisma and action sequences help propel it forward. In terms of the latter, Louis Leterrier masterfully orchestrates some of the series’ most audacious stunts, managing to balance fight scenes, varied vehicle chases, and shootouts to prevent repetition during the film’s extensive run time of nearly two and a half hours. The editing truly shines in these moments, producing a solid action film that should
