REMINDER: ADJUST IRRIGATION AS SUMMER HEATS UP
PEORIA CITY POOLS NOW OPEN, SWIM LESSONS STILL AVAILABLE
THE TRAILHEAD TO BEGIN CONSTRUCTION THIS FALL
Information Courtesy of Upper West Side PHX Renderings Courtesy of The Pederson Group Recently, the Peoria City Council approved rezoning at the northeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road for The Trailhead. The highly anticipated development will be a master-planned mixed-use project anchored by an upscale Safeway grocery store and a multi-family complex. “We are super excited about this mixeduse master-planned development and all that it will bring to our awesome community,” says Katie Roe of Upper West Side PHX (@upperwestsidephx on Facebook), a grassroots community movement encouraging specialty shops and restaurants to open locations on the Upper West Side. Construction will tentatively begin this fall and locals can learn more by visiting the blog at uwsphx.com.
Have you adjusted your irrigation schedule recently? The summer months are peak times that irrigation is needed for our landscape, but water should be deeply and infrequently applied. Deep watering (2-3 feet for trees and shrubs) gets water to a cooler soil layer where the roots thrive and are not affected as rapidly by hot dry days. To learn more about watering in the desert, visit wateruseitwisely.com. RECYCLE SNEAKERS FOR A GOOD CAUSE THROUGH JUNE 15

city leadership and the public,” says Tyne. “This role is critical to a well-functioning and accessible local government, and I am pleased to have Ms. Dyckman serving in this capacity.” “I’m honored to continue my work at the city of Peoria as the Peoria City Clerk and I’m grateful for this incredible opportunity,” Dyckman adds. To learn more about the Peoria City Clerk’s Office, visit peoriaaz.gov/cityclerk. PEORIA IS DROUGHT READY Water is one of the most precious resources for desert dwellers. As Arizonans continue to hear more about the water shortage, it is important that Peoria residents have the facts. Declining water levels in Lake Mead, which serves as the water reservoir for the Lower Colorado River Basin, have already triggered a Tier 1 shortage declaration. Peoria has prepared for drought conditions for many years and has plans in place should conditions worsen. Currently, approximately 34% of Peoria’s water supply is from the Colorado River/CAP Canal and the city uses 61% of its available CAP supply, storing the rest underground. To learn more about Peoria’s diverse water supply, and how the city is prepared, visit peoriaaz.gov/droughtready.
CITY OF PEORIA SELECTS NEW CITY CLERK Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne has selected Lori Dyckman as the Peoria City Clerk. Dyckman has been serving as the Acting City Clerk for the last six months following the retirement of the former City Clerk. In this position, she oversees the operations of the City Clerk’s Office in their efforts to provide transparency and public access through compliance with open meeting laws, public records laws, and elections laws. “Our City Clerk is called upon daily to provide various services and important information to myhyperlocalnews.com

Truth In Taxation: The City of Peoria Shares the Latest News About Local Taxes Information Courtesy of the City of Peoria THE CITY OF PEORIA’S FISCAL YEAR 2023 TOTAL PROPERTY TAX RATE IS PROPOSED TO STAY THE SAME AS THE PRIOR FISCAL YEAR AT $1.44/$100 OF ASSESSED VALUE. The secondary rate is $1.15/$100 of assessed value while the primary rate is $0.29/$100 of assessed value. The result is net zero on the total property tax rate. For example, if a $100,000 home did not change in value, then the Peoria property tax levy would still be $144 for both the current year and next year. Any change in the Peoria property tax bill is due to assessed valuation changes in the home. The Taxation Hearing information is required by Arizona Revised Statutes and only addresses the primary property tax. However, Peoria has both a primary and a secondary property tax. In compliance with section 42-17107,
Arizona Revised Statutes, the city of Peoria is notifying its property taxpayers of Peoria’s intention to raise its primary property taxes over last year’s level. Peoria is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $221,043 or 4.28 %. For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Peoria’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $29 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase). Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $27.81. This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides. WITH THEIR CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO HELPING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED BARRO’S PIZZA AND PEPSI ARE TEAMING UP FOR THE SEVENTH YEAR THIS JUNE TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY PEDIATRIC CANCER. Throughout the month of June, all Barro’s Pizza locations will donate proceeds, up to $40,000, from the sale of any lunch special to the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (ACFC), a local nonprofit whose mission is to help Arizona families with the high costs and challenging logistics while caring for their children during cancer treatment. “We are so proud to support such an amazing organization like the Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children,” says Mike Barro, co-owner of Barro’s Pizza. “The work they do in our community for children and their families is incredible, so each June we look forward to helping support this critical mission. Thanks
to our loyal customers, we’ve raised more than $180,000 to date and look forward to this year’s fundraising efforts.” Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children (azcancerfoundation.org) was founded in 2013 by Chrisie Funari after she lost her young daughter, Ava, to cancer. Funari traveled the country seeking the best treatments and care for her daughter. Knowing the struggle and the toll it takes on the family, she started the organization to empower families by ensuring they have a secure place to live, access to medical treatment, and continued support. They have since helped hundreds of local families and will continue to help more and more families each year. “Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children is truly thankful for the continued support from Barro’s Pizza in partnership with Pepsi,” Funari says. “Their generosity fuels our critical support and programs that we provide to Arizona families who have a child with cancer.” During the entire month of June, Barro’s Pizza is encouraging guests to choose from a selection of lunch specials that give back to this fundraiser. The Northwest Peoria Barro’s Pizza location is at 24762 N. Lake Pleasant Parkway.

City News Valley Residents Team Up to Encourage The State to Ban Declawing Cats WHILE IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE, THERE ARE CAT OWNERS WHO STILL ASK VETS TO DECLAW THEIR CATS, WHICH IS AN AMPUTATION OF THE CAT’S “FINGERS AND TOES.” It is illegal in the state of New York and banned in 40 countries worldwide. According to many experts, it’s extremely painful to cats and they never fully recover. Several Valley residents are spearheading an effort to ban the practice in the state of Arizona so that no additional cats suffer from this surgical procedure. One such person is Kallie Rose. “When I found out that declawing cats was still legal in Arizona, I knew I had to step up and take a stand. All our pets are precious, but no other species are subjected to the amputation that cats still endure. While many vets refuse to perform this barbaric surgery, it is still possible to get it done,” Rose says. “It’s imperative that we prevent additional suffering.”
Nonprofit organization The Paw Project is heading up a nationwide effort, state by state, to make declawing cats illegal. For more than two decades, they have been committed to educating the public, legislators and veterinarians about how this potentially crippling surgical procedure can harm a cat’s physical health and result in disturbing behavioral changes. Unsuspecting cat guardians are often unaware that declawing is an amputation of a cat’s toes at the last joint. They do not realize that negative behavioral and health changes caused by declawing can be irreversible and permanent; in effect, trading one set of problems for another. Arizona legislators are reaching across the aisles to move AZ Anti-Declaw Bill, HB2014 (formerly HB2224), all the way to Governor Ducey for signature before year end. It has already unanimously passed the Arizona Senate Commerce Committee. The bill, which would prohibit non-therapeutic declawing,
UNLIMITED DRINKING WATER as low as $17/month!
was authored by State Representative Amish Shah, MD (D - Phoenix) and State Representative John Kavanagh (R - Fountain Hills). Paw Project Director and Founder Dr. Jennifer Conrad, DVM and Arizona Humane Society CEO Dr. Steven Hansen, DVM provided testimony at the Committee hearing. The bill must pass both houses of the legislature and be signed by the governor before becoming law. Unfortunately, there is opposition to the bill. “It’s hard to believe that anyone would oppose this bill,” said Shah, who is also an ER doctor and familiar with the painful procedure. “In my mind, there’s no way to rationalize allowing an animal to suffer in this way.” “It’s time we get this anti-declaw bill passed. We have the support of veterinarians such as VCA Animal Hospital and Banfield Pet Hospital who have already banned the practice and our local animal rescue organizations
like the Arizona Humane Society,” Rose adds. “More than 70% of people polled are in favor of making declawing illegal; the additional 30% probably just need to be educated, which is what we are trying to do.” To learn more, visit pawproject.org.

New Trail to Be Built at Paloma Regional Preserve By Jenna-Lee Neff COMPETITIVE MOUNTAIN BIKERS IN PEORIA COULD HAVE THE CHANCE TO KEEP THEIR SKILLS SHARP BY THE END OF 2022 AFTER THE CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED A NEARLY $30,000 GRANT TO BRING A NEW TRAIL TO THE PALOMA REGIONAL PRESERVE. “This is our first attempt of bringing a directional mountain biking trail to Peoria,” says Peoria’s Field Operations and Planning Services Manager Brandon Putman. “The White Tank Regional Park was our inspiration for the rules and trail etiquette. The location was chosen for its existing natural rock outcropping offering the opportunity to create challenge with minimal disturbance to the area.” According to information from a recent city council meeting, the trail will provide families of all abilities the opportunity to challenge and improve their skills. It has been designed to be ridden north to south and will include a technical section with 12 features that allow beginner and advanced riders to choose their skill levels, followed by a speed section that will “give riders the thrill of speed.” The proposed trail is approximately three-quarters of a mile. “During passive use, riders will be encouraged to ride the course from the north to the south. Hikers are welcome to enjoy the trail as well, but we ask they hike in reverse, south to the north, and yield to any riders on the course,” Putman says. According to information from the meeting, the Parks and Recreation Department - Trails Division applied for the Outdoor Tourism Grant of the Visit Arizona Initiative
(VAI) Grant Program. The awarded Arizona Office of Tourism Outdoor Recreation Revitalization Grant is for $29,000 and requires a 10 percent match from the trails operating fund, bringing the total cost of the project to $32,500. The VAI Grant Program was created to provide recovery assistance to the state’s tourism industry, with information from the meeting showing that Peoria may seek to host an annual mountain biking event after completion of the trail. For now, Putman says the trail is more of a skills development course where young riders can work up to more challenging features in the technical section. “Once [the trail is] formulated and receiving user responses, we will look to develop competitive event programming using the skills course, which includes collaborating with event promoters, drawing competitors from across the Valley and neighboring states,” Putman explains. He says the next steps of creating the trail include getting jurisdictional approvals from different regulatory agencies. With no significant snags in the plan, he says he expects those approvals by the end of summer. “Construction is minimal and is anticipated to be done in the fall of this year,” he adds. Putman also noted that Peoria is already a bike-friendly city, utilizing street bike lanes, multi-use pathways and other mountain trails to keep cyclists riding. He says the city is excited for the trail concept to meet the increased demand for more interesting and exciting bike terrain. To keep up to date with the latest developments on this project, visit peoriaaz.gov.

Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign
Nonprofit Accepting Monetary, Nonperishable Food and Water Donations for Heat Relief THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS. According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water. Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies. PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission. “During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa. “While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.”
myhyperlocalnews.com
Several municipalities have created partnerships with the Mission, bringing relief to the streets in the Mission’s Hope Coach vehicles to distribute water, toiletries, and case management services. “Anything helps in this undertaking to save and change lives, whether it’s through a monetary donation, dropping off a case of water or starting a water drive,” says Brissa. “This is so much more than a handout of water. This is arming people with the tools to change their lives and move out of harm’s way.” More information about the 10th annual Code:Red initiative can be found at phoenixrescuemission.org/codered. Food, water, and all other heat-relief donations can be dropped off at the Mission’s Donation Warehouse, located at 2515 N. 34th Drive in Phoenix. IT’S SOLAR SEASON! Locally Owned Sunsolar Solutions Continues to Shine
By Michelle Talsma Everson
S
ummer is here, which Michael O’Donnell, vice president of sales and co-owner at Sunsolar Solutions, affectionately calls, “Solar Season.” With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year though, Valley residents are switching to solar energy this summer and all year-round. This is evident in the continued growth of the locally owned solar power company. Since its start in 2015, Sunsolar Solutions has helped over 8,300 homeowners go solar across the state and hired more than 115 local employees (not including local contractors!). “We are proud to have brought more than 100 new green jobs to the Valley,” says Val Berechet, president of Sunsolar Solutions. “We are right here, in your backyard. We are a homegrown company that has been doing business in the Valley—and growing—for seven years.” In addition to Berechet and O’Donnell, Sunsolar Solutions is also lead by Troy Dinbokowitz. Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity through solar panels. With hundreds of sunny days each year, the Valley of the Sun is literally the perfect place for those considering supplementing some of their energy usage with solar power. “Our innovative solar solutions and technology works to power your entire home with clean, renewable 20 • June/July 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER
energy – all from just the sun,” according to the company. “With each solar panel, you’ll be combatting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing your fossil fuel dependency while saving up to 95 percent on your electricity bill… By investing in a solar system today, you’ll be cultivating a brighter tomorrow.” “We have a deep understanding of the local market and local utilities,” Berechet explains. “We are an experienced local company and take care of everything from start to finish.”
“
SOME BENEFITS OF GOING SOLAR WITH SUNSOLAR SOLUTIONS INCLUDE: • Increase your property value. • No upfront costs. • Customers can save up to 95% off of their electric bill. • Protection against inflation and energy cost increases from the electric company. • Increasing the property value. • Earning a great return on your investment. • Going green. • Providing clean, reliable energy.
By helping thousands of Arizona households switch to solar energy, Berechet shares how Sunsolar Solutions is making an impressive green impact on the environment. “The latest statistics show that, so far, we’ve helped to reduce an estimated 6.8 million tons of CO2 emissions. This reduction is the equivalent of 16.2 million trees planted. We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!”

We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!” “Doing business right and providing quality customer experience—plus referrals and good online reviews—has paid dividends in how much we’ve grown,” Berechet explains. “It’s led to more customers and, thanks to their business, more employees.” Because of their impressive growth, Sunsolar Solutions moved into a 19,000 square foot installation center and a 2,500 square foot sales space just last year, adding to the 3,000 square foot administrative office they occupied prior. What makes Sunsolar Solutions stand out among other solar companies that locals could work with? O’Donnell shares that it has to do with how their company provides quality service and transparency, ensuring the customer has the correct expectations. “Eighty percent of solar companies don’t actually install the solar panels that they sell you,” he explains. “We do it all—sales and installation. We also always provide the total cost to customers so they know what to expect. And, if we can, we provide multiple design options for them to choose from, so they can pick which one works best for their budget. Of course, our goal is always to get their electric bill down to zero.” “Because we are local and hands-on, we can handle every aspect of installation and walk the customer through the entire process,” O’Donnell continues. Sunsolar Solutions’ goal, even if they don’t make a sale, is to educate customers and those interested in solar. They always provide their sales reps with ongoing education and the tools they need to make an honest sale and provide all the facts when meeting potential solar panel owners. “This is a great company to work with,” says Teresa R., a Sunsolar customer. “I had another family member buy from another company more than a month before

me and they’re still waiting. Mine is completed and running.” “I had Sunsolar Solutions do my solar install and it has been awesome,” says Curtis, another recent customer. “They did extremely good work and kept me up to date as to what was going on all along the way. They even ensured everything was painted to match!” “Sunsolar Solutions doesn’t just come out once, install panels, and leave,” O’Donnell shares. “When you work with us, not only do we do everything, but it’s the beginning of a 25-year relationship. We provide assurance, maintenance, warranties, and can always come to help in-person as we’re local.” For those who are interested in investing in solar power, Sunsolar Solutions’ team shares that now is the time. O’Donnell explains that there is a deadline for APS customers to switch to solar to still be grandfathered into their current solar buyback program—which is going down 10 percent, meaning less energy savings for
solar power customers. But those who act before the August 31 deadline will be able to be grandfathered in to the current program. Whether a new customer signs up this summer or another time, the Sunsolar team shares that they are grateful for their continued growth. “We’re doing well because we’re doing good for the community and the environment,” Berechet says. “We are excited for today and what the future holds.” “Thanks to community support and our success, we’ve really made an impact on both the economy and environment,” O’Donnell says. “Every solar system that we install really moves the needle in the right direction for saving money for that family but also a positive impact on the economy and environment.” To learn more and inquire about a free consultation, visit sunsolarsolutions.com or call 623-562-9009. IT PAYS TO REFINISH, IT COSTS TO REPLACE Bathtub Refinishing from the Global Industry Leader Over 1 Million Refinished Bathrooms BEFORE

hat a difference a month can make! The three i’s—inflation, interest rates, and inventory—are all going in the wrong direction. I don’t know about you, but my expenses have gone up by much more than the 8% inflation that is being reported. Interest rates continue to rise and experts think they are not stopping yet. What about inventory? When I was writing my last article a month ago, we had about 5,200 homes on the MLS and today we have over 8,500. That is an increase of over 60%. That’s a huge percentage increase. The last factors making a negative difference are the drop in the stock market and the drop in the value of crypto currencies. People have lost a lot of money in the past month and that is money some of them would have used to purchase a home. Without that money there will be a group of people who will be taken out of the home buying market and that isn’t good for price increases. We are hearing that this is the top of the market and, whether it really is or whether this is creating a selffulfilling prophecy, doesn’t matter anymore if the result is the same—and that is a shift in the housing market. I am feeling that shift because, compared to a month ago, I am not getting the same number of showings, people through my open houses, and offers. So, price increases are slowing down, and the buyer market is shrinking. Will the prices drop? I don’t think so but I’m less sure of that than I have been for a long time. I now think that is a possibility where before I didn’t think it would happen. I thought our price increases would slow. But

I also didn’t think inflation would get this bad, interest rates would keep going up, and our financials (stocks/ cryptos) would suffer this badly. SHOULD YOU SELL NOW? It depends on what your goal is. If you are going to be selling and buying in the same market, then the prices are doing the same thing for the house you own and the house you are going to buy. For example, if homes continue going up and you sell, you get a high price for the home you sell and you’re paying a high price for the home you buy. If homes go down in price, then you sell your home for less but you buy the next home for less. So, if you were thinking of downsizing or upsizing, do it and get to where you ultimately want to be. Plus, the interest rates look as if they are going to be going up so the quicker you do this the better if you are going to be financing your next purchase. If your goal is different, then we should talk about what that goal is and how best it can be accomplished. Ascend Academy of Arizona Offers Quality Programming to Adults with Disabilities Photos Courtesy of Ascend Academy of Arizona
A
scend Academy of Arizona opened in December 2020 because CEO Jodi Dougan saw the need for a safe place for adults with disabilities to go during the day that is inclusive and supportive. “Arizona really needed a program that supported individuals with the same functioning level to go to continue their learning and give them meaning and purpose,” Dougan says.
“Ascend Academy is a boutique program catering to higher functioning non-violent adults with special needs,” she continues. “Our goal is to provide a loving and healthy environment that generates feelings of inclusiveness, accomplishment, and self-worth. Our services are provided in a fun, loving and nurturing way using all available modern innovations to prepare members [program participants] to not only thrive in the environment around them, but to enjoy all their community has to offer.” Ascend Academy provides transportation to and from the program where participants partake in a variety of experiences including outings, volunteer opportunities, science, arts and crafts, exercise programs, life skills, gardening, games, teaching, team leadership, and socializations. “Our goal is building friendships and becoming part of an extended family,” Dougan says. With an extensive background in patient care, nursing, and nonprofits, Dougan leads the charge at Ascend Academy alongside her experienced staff. It’s a myhyperlocalnews.com

www.ascend-academy.com
“Ascend Academy aspires to become an example of how services can be delivered to members in a fun and individualized way that promotes access to the community in terms of leisure and vocational opportunities,” she says. Local resident Ben is the father of Alex, age 34, who has Down’s syndrome and attends Ascend Academy. “In my opinion, the two main skills levels that Ascend Academy has drastically improved with Alex would be cognitive and her socialization skills. Ascend staff works with Alex on her learning skills daily to a point now where Alex can write in a daily journal on her events at Ascend. Before Ascend, her skill level was limited to writing her name. The socialization includes weekly community events. To see Alex’s eyes light up when she shows me pictures of her weekly travels is awesome.”
Dougan shares that she has some big plans for the future of Ascend Academy and is excited for future growth. She notes that parents or guardians who are interested in Ascend Academy’s programming can reach out for more info. All programming is geared toward the individual member and their family’s needs. “I believe that every person should enjoy a life with purpose and members should be enabled to reach their maximum potential,” Dougan says. Ascend Academy of Arizona is located at 4150 W. Peoria Avenue, Suite 125, in Phoenix. Transportation is offered to and from programming for members. To learn more, visit ascend-academy.com or call 602-688-9862. This content is sponsored by Ascend Academy of Arizona.
Nancy’s daughter Tressa is also a member at Ascend Academy. “Tressa is highly functional, a go getter and a modern-day socialite,” Nancy explains. “However, I have spent years fighting with the system and encouraging higher expectations from the programs Tressa has been involved in throughout her life. This is the first program that sees and expects Tressa to grow to her fullest potential, knowing she can accomplish anything. It may take a little longer and navigate through a different avenue, but she can and will. This attitude and vision are what excite me about Ascend Academy. Tressa has grown exponentially in social skills, organization, seeing a bigger picture, staying focused, getting excited over her creativity, and is a better communicator.”

Family Tips and Tricks for Summer Travel With Kids
By Tricia Travers, Owner of Simple Steps Learning
A
s a parent, we all know how stressful it can be to travel with our kids. Did I forget anything? Did I pack enough snacks? Did I close the garage door? Sound familiar? If so, I have your back. I have been there too! To help you prep for summer travels, here are some of my favorite tips and tricks for traveling with kids. SNACKS – A LOT OF SNACKS: You can never have too many snacks. I repeat, you can never have too many snacks when traveling with little ones! You can use any lunch box you would like but I recommend LunchBots Medium Trio II Snack Container – it’s available on Amazon.
MELISSA & DOUG WATER WOW BOOKS: These books are amazing when you need to keep kids busy while traveling. You fill the included pen “paint brush” with water and let your little one have a blast painting it. As the “paint” dries, the pages will turn back to white, and they can be painted repeatedly. Available on Amazon. DRY ERASE BUSY LEARNING BOOKS BY SIMPLE STEPS LEARNING: We love these dry erase markers because the eraser is attached to the pen cap. Available at simplestepslearning.com. MELISSA & DOUG REUSABLE STICKER PACKS: Use these repeatedly. No wasted stickers or paper. What’s not to love? Available on Amazon. LACING CARDS: The string is attached and your kids will practice fine motor skills while learning to sew. Our favorite are PlayMonster Lacing & Tracing – Dinosaurs
and Melissa & Doug Lace and Trace Activity Set: Pets. Both are available on Amazon.
BOOKS AND HEADPHONES: Be sure to pack your kids’ favorite books and headphones. You can find many options at big box retailers like Target or online at Amazon. A BACKPACK: Your kids are going to need something to hold all their fun new travel toys in. You can use any backpack you have at home. MINI PLAYDOUGH JARS BY SIMPLE STEPS LEARNING: These come in a variety of colors and are easy for travel. Available at simplestepslearning.com. GEL WINDOW CLINGS: This is perfect if you are on a plane and your little one has the window seat. My kids love this activity when we are on the plane! Available in all shapes and sizes on Amazon. CARD GAMES: My older child loves to play cards when we are on the plane. He has our undivided attention for hours so why not? Go on Amazon or to your favorite toy aisle and pick up your favorite card game. I hope these tips and tricks help you and your family when on the road or in the air this summer. Happy travels! Tricia Travers is a mom of three and owner of Simple Steps Learning. At Simple Steps Learning, they create themed, engaging, Montessori inspired learning books, busy bags, and sensory bins for children. Visit simplestepslearning.com to learn more.

The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer By Donna Throckmorton
T
he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics. One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library. Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general. In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.
Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day. It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency. Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.
A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier. Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today! Remember, as Dr. Suess wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” To learn more, visit azsos.libguides.com/ azsummerlibrary. Donna Throckmorton is an Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records Library Services Consultant.
A summer without reading can set students back, with the average student losing 17-34% of the prior year’s learning gains during summer break. Still, according to a report from the White House, reading just five books over the summer can help prevent learning loss.

Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke. 32 • June/July 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER
“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-
breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace. “Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.
