New Limit on APS Customers Able to Go Solar Set at 15 Percent By Erick O’Donnell

E

ver since the 1980s, when scientists first started to warn publicly of the dangers posed by global warming, the need to replace our carbon-belching system of power generation with clean renewables has been inherently urgent. One might think the fate of our planet’s ecosystems—not to mention the human populations that depend on their stability— should suffice to nudge people into embracing solar energy, the planet’s most abundant potential power source, yet the Arizona Corporation Commission seems determined to come up with ever-more-creative ways of adding artificial urgency to the choice to go solar. Since the commission voted in 2016 to pay owners of rooftop solar less for their power than what they sell it for, thereby initiating a new regime of steadily falling annual compensation for solar customers, that urgency has been relative: Do I want great financial rewards this year or good ones next year? But, with a new rule going into effect this year, homeowners now face an absolute barrier to access that depends on the total amount of

power being generated by solar panels in their community, with no certainty over how soon they will be indefinitely shut out of the opportunity to go solar. The new rule limits the proportion of solar-generated electricity allowed to exist within the area served by a substation to 15 percent of its peak capacity. That means that once 15 percent of a service area’s total electric current is supplied by rooftop panels, everyone else who might want to go solar will be left out in the cold. The rule technically went into effect Feb. 25, but implementation has varied somewhat by utility; for example, Tucson Electric Power has already started screening applications to determine whether their areas are still eligible for new solar installations, but APS, which has planned on a May rollout, has yet to announce the actual start. Val Berechet, president of solar sales company SunSolar Solutions, is urging his sales force to emphasize the urgency of switching. He has set up a geographic database that will track what areas are approaching capacity or have already exceeded their maximum. Out of 17 applications submitted

to TEP after the utility started implementing the maximum on May 12, four have already been denied, signaling possibly maxedout service areas, Berechet said. He expects other areas in Arizona to hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity. Some areas served by APS are sure to be at their maximum as soon as the utility starts evaluating applications under the new rule, Berechet said. Buckeye and North Peoria are especially saturated with rooftop solar, he said. “It sucks, it really does suck,” Berechet said.“It’s almost surreal.” “We have one customer who last week on Wednesday was permitted,” he said. “Tomorrow, we have to call the customer and cancel his project.” “It’s mind-blowing,” he added. The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the secondhighest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency. Yet state regulatory decisions have proven to be a drag on solar’s

★★★★★

expansion in what should be one of the most favorable environments for the technology. Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association show yearly residential installations rising steadily from 2010 to 2017 (the year the state’s utilities started paying less for solar-generated electricity than what they sell it for) and slowly declining through the two years thereafter. Only time will tell how this new restriction will affect solar energy’s future in Arizona. So what happens next? That, reader, is up to you. If you believe in solar energy— whether for its environmental benefits, its job-creating potential, or just its financial benefits for your family—then you can vote for legislators and commissioners who believe in solar energy too. New laws and rules can push the utilities to expand their capacity for distributed generation, but only if the powers that be have a clear signal from the public that renewable energy is a priority. In the meantime, you can call SunSolar Solutions today and find out how soon we can get your household into that rapidly filling 15 percent.

STUDENT ARTWORK BRIGHTENS PEORIA STREETS FOUR INTERSECTIONS IN PEORIA RECENTLY BECAME MORE COLORFUL THANKS TO STUDENTS FROM COYOTE HILLS, FRONTIER, SUNSET HEIGHTS, AND ZUNI HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. City-owned utility boxes at 107th Avenue and Williams Road, 83rd Avenue and Lone Cactus Road, 87th Avenue and Lake Pleasant Parkway, as well as 95th Avenue and Deer Valley Road, recently were “wrapped” in designs by students from the neighboring schools. As part of the regular school curriculum, students in art classes competed for the opportunity to have their design wrapped on a utility box. The final selections for the four locations were done by the Peoria Youth Advisory Board. The board’s selection meeting, held after the COVID-19 closure of public facilities, was conducted via video conference. Zuni Hills sixth grader, Kimber Powell, designed the wrap at 107th Avenue and Williams. Blake Sticht, a third grader from Frontier Elementary School, created the design at 83rd Avenue and Lone Cactus. The box at 95th Avenue and Deer Valley was designed by Braelyn Gonzalez, with attention to the bright orange sunsets known to be frequent in Peoria. Seventh grader Alisha McIntryre, from Coyote Hills Elementary School, won the competition for her work to be displayed at 87th Avenue and Lake Pleasant Parkway, easily the most trafficked location of the four locations.

PEORIA CITY COUNCIL REVIEWS NEW BUDGET

RECENTLY THE PEORIA CITY COUNCIL REVIEWED THE PROPOSED FISCAL YEAR 2021 BUDGET. The proposed budget, taking into consideration the current economic uncertainty, is $665 million. This is a 0.75 percent decrease from the prior year without any tax increases. “The FY 2021 proposed budget is a prudent spending plan, but it is not a finished product,” says Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne. “We are prepared to make adjustments to the final budget throughout the fiscal year as the economic situation evolves to ensure that our financial future is sustainable while meeting the expectations of our community.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related economic uncertainty, the proposed budget was developed as a baseline budget, meaning that it can revert back to the ongoing spending levels of FY 2020. The proposed budget is comprised of four major categories: the operating budget at $313.3 million represents the day-today operations of the city; the capital budget at $233.7 million entails large, one-time capital projects; debt service payments at $42.3 million; and contingency reserve at $75.7 million. Also, the city is proposing a 10-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) of $783.2 million.

sources that will pay for those improvements. As the community grows, new projects and amenities are needed to serve a growing population and maintain service levels. This has become more challenging as funding sources that were traditionally used to offset these costs are no longer available or have been significantly restricted. This year’s recommended CIP includes major investments in several projects already underway such as the expansion of the Pyramid Peak Water Treatment Plant, the Happy Valley Road Widening between Lake Pleasant Parkway and the Agua Fria River, Paloma Community Park, and a new neighborhood park in the Meadows subdivision. Other notable projects in the CIP include a recreation center at Paloma Community Park, regional drainage improvements at 67th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak, a new fire station in northern Peoria, a planned replacement of the aging fleet building, increased capacity at the Jomax Water Retreatment Facility, and expansion of reclaimed water infrastructure.

“Creating a balanced budget is one of the most important responsibilities of city government,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “During this exceptional time, when the far-reaching implications of the COVID-19 pandemic remain unknown, we are focused on keeping taxes low, adhering to our prudent Principles of Sound Financial Management, and ensuring that every action we take is for the benefit of those that call Peoria home.”

The city’s top priority is to preserve the high quality of life Peoria residents have come to expect and the FY 2021 budget provides the financial resources necessary to do that.

The CIP provides a schedule of planned improvements over the next 10 years and identifies the revenue

JJ’S GRUBB SHACK 2501 W. Happy Valley Rd., Ste. 12 in Happy Valley Towne Center The inspiration of JJ’s Grubb Shack, a local family owned business, came from owners JJ and Regina Holmes’ Colorado backyard barbecues and catfish frys with their family and friends. Established in 2012, as a small restaurant in an Arizona liquor store, the Holmes decided to bring to life their great backyard memories with family and friends in Colorado and Arizona. These memories were of everyone being welcomed and no one being considered a stranger. A sports enthusiast, JJ knew he could not offer the “grub” dining experience without the opportunity to allow his guests to enjoy watching their favorite sports events. The goal is to provide food that no matter where you are from that, when eaten, will fondly take you back to a place of good times, great memories and home. yourupperwestsider.com

PEORIA RETHINKS RECREATION THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS CHANGED MANY ASPECTS OF LIFE, INCLUDING THE AVAILABILITY OF RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. The staff at the Peoria Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department recognize the need for local residents to have alternative ways to recreate, exercise and enjoy the outdoors during these uncertain times. With many summer camps and programs being cancelled, families are looking for ways to keep their children active and engaged. Recently, the city of Peoria launched a series of videos called Home Hangouts. More than 50 videos are available online for residents to craft, read, dance, paint, play a game or learn a new skill. “We have launched and will continually update a campaign of virtual experience videos, social media engagements and physical recreation activities for the community,” according to the city’s website. “Stay safe and stay healthy!” Some of the videos’ topics include: • Fitness challenges and resources to keep everyone from kids to adults active. • Nutrition resources, including information on healthy, balanced eating. • Outdoor educational videos that help locals to better understand native plants and animals. “In this Nature Series we

will cover three different native trees: Ironwood, Palo Verde and Mesquite. We will also cover some cacti: Saguaro and Chollas. Finally, we also hope to provide some insight into our local population of birds and lizards as well as a general video on the Sonoran Desert,” according to the city. • Videos that highlight sports skills improvements in a variety of sports. • Virtual fitness classes. • A virtual library experience. • “Blackout Bingo” games that encourage fitness activities related to different sports. • Coloring activities for kids. Locals can find these videos on Facebook at facebook.com/peoriaazrec as well as peoriaaz.gov/homehangouts.

Residents can also catch storytime from 7 to 9 a.m. and fitness programming from 6 to 8 p.m. on Cox Cable Ch. 11 and CenturyLink Channels 8009 and 8509. TIPS FOR POSITIVE FAMILY

Are You Turning 65?

COMMUNICATION DURING COVID-19

By Michael Aurit, JD, MDR, and Karen Aurit, LAMFT

FAMILIES ARE FACING SOME VERY DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS NOW THAT ARIZONA HAS RE-OPENED. A range of strong opinions about social distancing and safety precautions may cause family conflict if communication breakdowns and negative emotional reactions go unchecked. Even some spouses are split over best practices during the pandemic. Enter extended families into the equation and the range of opinions can quickly become a heated blame game. Some family members would rather not have any conversation at this point. Some are consumed with fear and anxiety. Some are focused on the science and support adhering to CDC guidelines and social distancing protocols. Others question the level of risk or prefer to return to normal, even acknowledging the potential for negative health outcomes within our community. Family conflict is nothing new and can be overcome when family members are committed to healthy communication with the help of some mutually agreed upon guidelines for conversations. You could propose your own version of the following suggested communication guidelines to ensure less conflict and better family discussions:

Once you all agree on guidelines, schedule a family talk. Start with a fun activity to celebrate being together, maybe a virtual dance challenge, silliest joke exchange, or perhaps a rousing chorus of “We are Family.” When you begin, be prepared for a difficult conversation. There may be feelings of frustration. Remember, no one has all the right answers in this unique situation. The whole family can choose to use this as a wonderful opportunity to show love and compassion even when you disagree.

CHECK FOR LEAKS AS

SUMMER WATER USE INCREASES THE TRIPLE-DIGIT TEMPERATURES OF AN ARIZONA SUMMER OFTEN SERVE AS A REMINDER OF THE PRECIOUS RESOURCES WE ENJOY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR – PARTICULARLY WATER. Although Peoria has a stable, diverse and well-managed water portfolio, it is important that we each take steps to conserve water wherever we can.

service representative will attempt to contact the customer and report the findings. In addition, the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) Smart Home Water Guide offers step-by-step instructions on reading your meter and inspecting water devices on the property, such as performing a dye test to check for a toilet leak. The guide is available online at smarthomewaterguide.org.

Water use may increase in summer months. This increase is often the result of additional water used to maintain lawns and keep plants alive in Arizona’s hot, dry environment. Pools lose water to evaporation during the warmer months as well, resulting in regular refills. However, increases can also be a sign of a leak or other problems.

Beyond monitoring for household leaks, Peoria’s Sustainable University offers free workshops designed to empower Peoria residents to make small changes for big impacts. Through these classes, residents can learn about a variety of topics from subject matter experts related to water conservation, such as desert landscaping and water use, as well as important sustainable topics including solar, energy conservation and composting. To learn more about how to implement sustainable measures in your own home, visit peoriaaz.gov/sustainability.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average household loses more than 10,000 gallons of water each year through leaks — the same amount of water needed to wash 280 loads of laundry, take 600 showers or meet the average family’s water needs for a month. The city of Peoria works diligently to review water usage from its monthly meter reads and investigates higher than normal water use. If there is a sign of a potential leak or high water flow at the time of the meter inspection, a customer

Each of us must do our part to use water wisely to ensure an adequate water supply for today and future generations. Water conservation will not only help save our precious water resources, it can also help save money. For more information on conserving water, visit peoriaaz.gov/waterconservation.

ARIZONA ENRICHMENT CENTERS STILL OPEN TO LOCAL FAMILIES THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS IMPACTED MANY AREAS OF LIFE— CHILD CARE IN PARTICULAR BEING ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT FOR MANY LOCAL FAMILIES. Back in April, Governor Doug Ducey announced the official launch of Arizona Enrichment Centers to offer child care for the children of first responders, critical health care workers, and essential public sector

workers, including child safety workers. In May, the program expanded to offer prioritized child care for the children of grocery store employees and food bank workers. The program will continue to offer prioritized care and scholarships to eligible families through the end of July. The initiative was made possible thanks to a broad network of child care providers and numerous state agencies, including the Arizona Departments of Education, Health Services, Administration, Economic Security, First Things First, and the Government Transformation Office.

“Arizona is coming together to serve our frontline workers serving all of us,” Governor Ducey says. “Through support including child care assistance and financial resources, we can help alleviate some of the stress and concerns that families serving on the frontlines are facing. I’m grateful to

Superintendent Hoffman and all the nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations for partnering with us to make these resources available.” “This initiative is critically important for the children and families of our first responders, health care workers, and other essential emergency personnel,” says Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman. “I’m grateful for everyone that is stepping up to serve these families during this difficult time.”

About the Enrichment Centers The state is working with Arizona Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R), a nonprofit organization that offers referrals to child care centers, to provide access to licensed child care facilities. The state is also working with local nonprofit, education, and faith organizations to provide families with additional resources and care options when licensed child care

is not available. All child care sites follow the CDC Guidance for Schools and Childcare Programs, the ADHS Childcare Facility COVID-19 Guidance, as well as guidance issued by local public health departments.

As of press time, 426 providers have registered as Enrichment Centers in 52 cities across the state; 3,318 families of critical health care and essential public sector workers have qualified for priority child care; and 2,321 families have qualified for a child care scholarship. Those eligible for child care through an Enrichment Center can register for priority child care eligibility and financial support by visiting arizonaenrichmentcenters.az.gov. A full list of approved child care facilities is also listed on the website and scholarships are available through the end of July. Questions can be e-mailed to AZEnrichmentCenters@az.gov.

GRADUATION UPDATES FROM LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS

R

ecently, Deer Valley Unified School District, Dysart Unified School District, and Peoria Unified School District shared a joint statement regarding plans for high school graduation. For the past several weeks, district leaders have been working with State Farm Stadium to provide memorable graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 seniors, according to the statement. Originally, graduation ceremonies were scheduled for May, but in light of the physical school closures through the end of this school year as ordered by Governor Doug Ducey, social distancing guidelines and event size restrictions, it was not prudent to hold ceremonies as initially scheduled. The districts still want to hold these important ceremonies, and they are making plans to do so, if it is feasible. If gathering restrictions are lifted or adjusted to allow the events to take place, the following dates are reserved at State Farm Stadium to hold the class of 2020 graduation ceremonies: Friday, June 26: Centennial, Sunrise Mountain, Raymond S. Kellis, and Ironwood high schools

Saturday, June 27: Peoria, Liberty and Cactus high schools. The Peoria Flex Academy will hold its graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 25 and additional details will be shared at a later date.

The specific format for all ceremonies is still to be determined, and will be dependent upon guidance from state government, health officials, and State Farm Stadium. Ceremony times will be determined and communicated to seniors and their families when confirmed. Between the three districts, there are 96,000 students. Across the state, most districts celebrated graduations virtually. To help ease the disappointment of missing out on traditional graduation festivities, many families opted for nontraditional celebrations, including signs on front lawns, virtual get-togethers, and more. Statewide, on May 20, Governor Doug Ducey honored the class of 2020 by declaring the day Class of 2020 Celebration Day.

“Students throughout the state have worked tirelessly to reach the major milestone of graduation,” says Governor Ducey. “These graduates have worked hard to earn their diplomas, certificates and advanced degrees — and many are the first in their family to do so. To all class of 2020 graduates — Arizona is proud of your success and we wish you the very best in your next endeavor. Congratulations!” Representatives from all of the districts have noted that official plans will be communicated in a timely fashion to students and their families when details are more concrete.

ALICE FERRANTI Veritas Academy & K.E.Y.S. Homeschool Co-op

Congratulations to Alex Webster who is graduating from Boulder Creek High School. During his first two years, Alex was a part of the baseball program but was unable to play the last two years due to medical issues. He is currently enrolled in the EMT program through West-MEC and plans on pursuing a career in the fire service. He hopes one day soon to join his older brother as a member of the Daisy Mountain Fire Department. Alex has the most amazing sense of humor and always tries to make the best out of every situation. We are so very proud of you Alex! We know you will make the world a better place!

Alice Ferranti is a scientific artist. Or is that an artistic scientist? She simply excels in both science and art! Taking many more science courses than required to graduate, Alice has won several science awards and served as a teacher’s assistant for high school biology and forensics classes. Alice has also taken extensive art courses, including attending the Youth Academy at the Scottdale Artists School for the past five summers. She especially enjoys cosplay, anime and manga. Alice’s

artwork has won awards at the annual K.E.Y.S. Art and Talent Show every year for the past four years, including the “Knock It Out of the Dome” award in her freshman year at K.E.Y.S. This fall, Alice will attend Huntington University where she will study Art Design. And, of course, you will see her in cosplay at the “Phoenix Fan Fusion” Comicon in September!

LET THE

JOURNEY SCHOOL OF PEORIA OFFERS FAMILIES A WELCOMING COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO CHILDREN AND THE JOYOUS ADVENTURE OF LEARNING By Michelle Talsma Everson

A

t Journey School of Peoria, the motto is: “Teaching children to learn with an uncompromising spirit of joy and adventure!” A nature-based daycare and preschool that offers a summer program for children ages 6 to 12, the spirit of community, adventure, and learning through play and exploration, is built into everything they do. Journey School of Peoria opened in early February, right before the COVID-19 pandemic closed their doors for several weeks, shares Bridget Sgro, the owner and head of school. The school is now re-opened and is welcoming new students and families to be a part of their unique community. “We’re following all of the CDC guidelines; temperatures are checked at the door, stringent cleaning standards, washing hands and social distancing,” Sgro confirms. A family owned and operated organization, Sgro says that the school uses the Reggio Emilia model of education and that the student to teacher ratio is lower than Arizona state standards. “It’s a child-led curriculum; they learn through the outdoors and through play,” she says. “Of course, in the summer, we make sure outdoor time involves water play and plenty of shade—and we only go outside for 30 minute spurts.” According to Scholastic.com, “the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education views young children as individuals who are curious about their world and have the powerful potential to learn from all that surrounds them. Educational, psychological,

14 • June/July 2020 • UPPER WESTSIDER

and sociological influences are important factors to consider in understanding children and working to stimulate learning in appropriate ways. Reggio teachers employ strategies such as exposing children to a wide variety of educational opportunities that encourage self-expression, communication, logical thinking, and problem-solving.” “We recognize that children have a natural curiosity and a predisposition to enjoy the unexpected,” Sgro says. “Children engage in active exploration and investigation to make sense of their world. We strive to fuel children’s investigative impulses and encourage discovery, promote questioning and challenging of ideas, and formulate connections of experience.” Sgro and her staff at Journey School of Peoria also believe in and offer students: a warm, welcoming environment; personalized attention; the chance to learn through exploration; and the belief and confidence that children can create their own meaningful experiences. One of the unique factors about Journey School is that children can explore nature and responsibility through the animals that live on the property. The school is home to some one-of-a-kind “pupils,” including goats, bunnies, chickens, hamsters, a service dog, and more. The children—as age appropriate, of course—have the opportunity to feed and play with the animals. There are also several trees and an overall, home-like, welcoming environment. “We’re all about teaching life skills,” Sgro says. “Even our children as young as 1-yearold learn how to clean up after themselves after mealtime.”

COVER STORY Speaking of meals, at the Journey School of Peoria, there is a garden and a full-time chef who cooks healthy, balanced meals and snacks for the children. Meals are served with an emphasis on family and community; as well as healthy eating and learning healthy choices. Students of all ages also participate in special classes, including yoga, art, music, drama, gardening, and more. This summer, for older children who are there for summer camp, there will be a world exploration theme for them to participate in and enjoy. Students will follow a drop of water around the world and learn what life is like in different countries, shares Sgro. “Journey School is the most amazing school we’ve ever been to,” shares one Journey School parent with two enrolled children. “Amazing, dedicated teachers, and don’t forget the amazing owner who truly cares so much. The food cooked by the chef there is so healthy and fresh. My kids love the school animals. We were skeptical when we read all the amazing things about it, but everything you read is true. [We] could not have ever imagined a better place for my two little ones.” One of the biggest priorities for Journey School is to foster a strong sense of community, not only among their students but the families of the children as well. “At Journey School, we believe in building and maintaining a strong sense of community,” Sgro shares. “We encourage the active participation of families and staff in all facets of life at Journey. We truly live together in community as a school family.” This family style community focus includes regular group

yourupperwestsider.com

activities and events (as appropriate and safe during the pandemic). In addition, the school makes sure to connect with parents through documenting children’s activities and documenting their learning through a portfolio system. Having only been a part of the local community for a short time, Sgro says that the reception has been amazing. Even during the school’s closure due to COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, Sgro and her team still kept in touch with students and their families. When it comes to pricing, Journey School of Peoria offers many options for local families—including full-week enrollment, part-week enrollment, summer camp for elementary school children, and before- and afterschool care once school is back in session. Prices are competitive to other, more “big box” style daycares and preschools, and Sgro says the school offers the convenience of charging by the day, not the hour. This summer, the daycare and preschool will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and the summer camp for elementary students will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prices are available on the school’s website, and the school is DES approved for subsidies and scholarships. It is also working on its Quality First rating. “We allow the children plenty of time to explore and learn how to be independent,” Sgro says. “They have a natural curiosity and desire to learn; we simply nurture that gift.” To learn more, check out journeyschool.com, e-mail bridget@ journeyschool.com, or call 623221-4450. SAFETY

STAY SAFE AT LAKE PLEASANT By Cris McSparen, Scorpion Bay Marina General Manager

S ALL INSURANCE WELCOME CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS FREE ESTIMATES

pending hot summer days with those we love at Lake Pleasant enjoying the idyllic lake views, the cool water, and the warm sun is at the top of many people’s lists. As you make your way to Scorpion Bay Marina, here are seven tips to follow for a safe and enjoyable summer adventure. 1. Arrive Early: Summer is one of the busiest times of the year at Lake Pleasant. Visitors to the lake should plan to get there early to get a spot and avoid rushing and speeding to maintain safety for everyone. Be aware of others around you and take extra precautions to prevent accidents and injury. Also be sure to check the Maricopa County Parks Department website as they have implemented hard closures the past few weekends due to capacity.

2. Designate a Captain: At the beginning of the day, each family or group should assign someone to act as the head of the party. The captain makes sure all members of the party are safe and are where they are supposed to be throughout the day. Keeping an ongoing headcount during the day is a great way to make sure everyone is safe and makes it home at the end of the day. 3. Drink Responsibly: Although most water-safety organizations warn lakegoers to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, those who choose to imbibe alcohol should do so responsibly. Be sure to keep hydrated with water even when not thirsty and be sure to avoid operating a boat or any other watercraft while intoxicated.

STAY SAFE 16 • June/July 2020 • UPPER WESTSIDER

4. Lifejackets are Required: The moment kids arrive at the Scorpion Bay dock, it’s a good idea to put a lifejacket on them. State and federal law require children 13 and under to wear a well-fitting, Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times when they are onboard any boat; all others must have a life jacket readily accessible. It’s important to note that all people on personal watercraft or being towed by a boat must wear a life jacket regardless of their age. The best

rule of thumb is to consistently wear a life jacket around water. Remember to always be sure to have enough life jackets in your watercraft for everyone on board.

5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Although the lake is a place for people to kick back and relax, it is an important time to keep hydrated. Banner Health suggests drinking eight to 10 eight ounce glasses of water during extreme heat, low humidity or activity even if you’re not thirsty and to avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and protective attire—including hats and sunglasses— along with reducing activity during the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. are all parts of staying hydrated. Dehydration is often the root cause of sickness and accidents on the lake, so be sure to learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses to make sure everyone in your group stays healthy. 6. Never Swim Alone: The buddy system is always a good idea around water. Make sure before you do any activities on the lake that everyone has a buddy to keep their eye on throughout the day—swimming alone is unsafe, even for adults. Never leave young children unattended near water and never ask a child to watch another child near water. If a child goes missing, always check the water first. 7. Keep an Eye on the Weather: Weather conditions can change quickly at Lake Pleasant. If there is any chance of inclement weather, be sure to be up-to-date on forecasts at the National Weather Service site. Any visitors on land should stay out of the washes. Also, if you are on a watercraft, make sure to make your way to the docks before weather conditions become dangerous. Overcrowded docks can prevent visitors from being able to get their watercraft out of the water safely. Scorpion Bay is Arizona’s premier floating playground, offering everything from daily pontoon and ski boat rentals to slips for long-term live-aboard lifestyles. REAL ESTATE

HOME EQUITY IS A BRIGHT SPARK IN THE HOUSING MARKET By Frank May

I

t’s hard not to talk about COVID-19 or the ramifications it is causing in our immediate and extended lives. The real estate market is susceptible to many whims of the economy, making it a volatile industry that can take a deep dive faster than you imagine. So what is in store for us now? How does your home factor into the economy and why it is helping the real estate market not sink like the Titanic? Given how we have seen more unemployment claims than ever before over the past several weeks, fear is spreading widely. Some good news, however, shows that more than 4 million initial unemployment filers have likely already found a new job, especially as industries such as health care, food and grocery stores, retail, delivery, and more increase their employment opportunities. Breaking down what unemployment means for homeownership, and understanding the significant equity Americans hold today, are important parts of seeing the picture clearly when sorting through this uncertainty. One of the biggest questions

yourupperwestsider.com

right now is whether this historic unemployment rate will initiate a new surge of foreclosures in the market. It’s a very real fear. Despite the staggering number of claims, there are actually many reasons why we won’t see a significant number of foreclosures like we did during the housing crash twelve years ago. The amount of equity homeowners have today is a leading differentiator in the current market.

Today, according to John Burns Consulting, 58.7% of homes in the U.S. have at least 60% equity. That number is drastically different than it was in 2008 when the housing bubble burst. The last recession was painful, and when prices dipped, many found themselves owing more on their mortgage than what their homes were worth. Homeowners simply walked away at that point. Now, 42.1% of all homes in this country are mortgage-free, meaning they’re owned free and clear. Those homes are not at risk for foreclosure. In addition, CoreLogic notes the average equity mortgaged homes have today is $177,000. That’s a significant amount that homeowners won’t be stepping away from, even in today’s economy.

In essence, the amount of equity homeowners have today positions them to be in a much better place than they were in 2008. BOTTOM LINE The fear and uncertainty we feel right now are very real, and this is not going to be easy. We can, however, see strength in our current market through homeowner equity that has not been there in the past. That may be a bright spark to help us make it through. If you want to know more about the

equity in your home and whether or not buying or selling is right for you, give us a call at 623-435-1300. Frank May grew up in the Valley, graduating from Northwest Christian School and NAU. CREATE THE ULTIMATE OUTDOOR GRILLING SPACE Contributed by BBQ Island

F

ood is always a plus when it comes to bringing friends and family together, making your grill the centerpiece of your backyard. After all, who doesn’t love a great barbecue? Here are eight tips for creating the ultimate outdoor grilling space. 1. PLAN CAREFULLY. As with any outdoor project, it’s essential to map things out before you get started. Put some thought into what you’d like in your ideal finished outdoor space. What kind of features do you want? Consider the appliances, surfaces, and utilities you’ll need, and think about whether you’ll be able to design this space yourself or will need to hire a contractor.

2. DESIGN WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND. A high-quality outdoor grilling space will last your family for generations. When in doubt, add any features you may eventually want now since it’s easier to install electrical, plumbing, and heating utilities earlier rather than later. 3. ADD CABINETRY. Nice cabinets may seem like a luxury, but this is a

great way to improve the layout and upgrade the appearance of your outdoor grilling space. You need space to stash your utensils, cookware, and other must-haves, and you won’t want to keep running back and forth to the house. 4. ALWAYS ADD A VENT HOOD. A vent hood will help reroute moisture and grease, preventing staining and other damage to your surrounding walls and the rest of your home. Most areas have building codes requiring ventilation systems in your grilling area if you’re placing it under another structure, like a pavilion or pergola. 5. PROVIDE SHADE. Speaking of pergolas and pavilions, a shaded area is a must. Spending time outdoors is essential for our health and well-being, but there’s nothing worse than baking in the summer sun with no relief in sight. 7. ADD A FIRE PIT. A fire pit is great for allowing your guests to get cozier and it’s a great conversation piece that guests love to gather around. It will allow you to extend your grilling season into the winter months.

8. DON’T NEGLECT THE LANDSCAPING. Just because your grilling station is an extension of your indoor kitchen, you shouldn’t ignore the other outdoor elements that come into play. Be sure to keep the lawn properly mowed, edged, and irrigated. You can also place tall potted plants around your patio as a moveable barrier.

FOOD

ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEKS:

DINE IN OR TAKE OUT

W

hen COVID-19 threatened the very core of the food and beverage industry with closures in mid-March, restaurant owners responded in turn — showing their strength by quickly adapting their business models to offer take-out, curbside and delivery options, and the widely embraced cocktails to go. The local community showed up, too, in support of these very restaurants that make up the Valley’s dynamic culinary scene.

With the mandates, however, one of the most beloved culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, was placed on hold while Arizona Takeout Weeks stepped in to encourage continued dining support. Meanwhile, the Arizona Restaurant Association created Arizona Restaurant Strong, a relief fund to provide funding for restaurant workers that found themselves immediately out of work due to closures surrounding the virus. Now, the Arizona Restaurant Association is pleased to announce that Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out (ARW) will take place from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 28 and Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27.

“We are so grateful for the support of our local dining community in the weeks that followed restaurant closures in March,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “The quick creation of Arizona Takeout Weeks and Arizona Restaurant Strong efforts could not have been possible without them. As Arizona Restaurant Weeks returns in a modified format to include dine-in, take out and liquor to go options, we are hopeful that our wonderful community of food enthusiasts will continue to show their support in any way they feel comfortable.” During the new Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines for opening and social distancing, whether dining in or taking out. The ARA is anticipating more than 200 of the Valley’s most beloved restaurants — from five-star fine dining establishments to locally owned and operated “mom and pop” hidden gems — to get involved.

As in years past, participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated menus that showcase local chefs’ creative talents through innovative dishes. Featuring a unique tasting opportunity apart from their regular menus, restaurants will offer three-course, prix-fixe menus for just $33 or $44 per person. Wine pairings to enhance each course are offered at some establishments for an additional cost. New and returning restaurants are welcome and encouraged to participate in this year’s ARW events. Applications can be completed online at arizonarestaurantweek.com/ restaurant-participation. Diners can view a complete list of participating restaurants for Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out online at arizonarestaurantweek.com. The list is updated and restaurants’ ARW menus are added as participants continue to join.

MY COMPANY AND TITLE IS…. My campanies are Westside Concepts – Haymaker, The Social on 83rd, and coming soon, NW Coffee. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Getting woken up by a singing 2-year-old! Spending the morning with my beautiful wife and 4 girls. Then heading out to my stores. I love seeing our amazing team and touching base with them to see what I can do to make their work environments better and help our business run top notch.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE VISTANCIA AREA IS… the community. I always knew this place was special, but the northwest Peoria area has been out of this world during these difficult times. The support they have shown is second to none. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... “Tin Cup.” MY FAMILY… Wife – Tanya, Daughters – Isabella 13, Gianna 11, Olivia 10, and Amelia, almost 3!

THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… Proverbs 19:21 “You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.” This is true with everything we do.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my girls. They may drive me nuts sometimes, but I don’t know if I would be motivated as much as I am without them. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an actor. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... “Does to Me” by Luke Combs and Eric Church THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My Dad, first and foremost, 11 restaurants and never failed. But I love Marcus Lemonis. The way he is able to give back to other businesses is awesome. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… “The Office,” every single time I watch it. THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… breakfast with my wife, golfing

36 holes, and dinner with my family along with night swimming in our backyard.

MY FIRST JOB WAS… working at Rancho Bernardo Inn as a cart kid for the golf course. MY LIFE… is pretty darned amazing. I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… a coffee shop, a wedding and event center and a Mexican concept. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS... my wife let me buy my Christmas present last year, a Phat Scooter for golfing. THE ACTOR I WOULD WANT TO PLAY ME IN A MOVIE OF MY LIFE IS.... Jason Bateman. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE TO… I took it last October, Italy for 10 days with my wife! Next… Ireland or Scotland with some golf buddies. MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS... ask questions, fail, get back up, and ask more questions.

GETAWAY

Visiting THE MO G OLLON RIM By Jill Frier

L

ooking for some less frequented spots in Arizona where you can see stunning views and tall pine forests? Head north of Fountain Hills on State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, and take a road trip to Rim Country. The inspiration of early 20th century Western author Zane Grey, and the site of the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona, the Mogollon Rim area offers stunning views of ponderosa pines from overlooks as high as 2,000 feet. Running along Highway 260 from Sedona to Payson to Pinetop-Lakeside and eventually to the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico, some of our favorite areas in Rim Country are just a short drive from the Valley. The Mogollon Rim is a fantastic location for hiking, sightseeing, and horseback riding, as well as a great getaway for boating and fishing, camping, hunting, and backcountry skiing in the winter. Tiny towns settled along the Rim offer a fascinating slice of Arizona history with museums, ruins, natural wonders, and points of interest all along the route. Certain areas off the main road are rugged, and often steep, so prepare to take a high-clearance vehicle if you want to venture farther off the beaten path. Here are our favorite spots to stop when we head north to Rim Country:

PAYSON As you head for Payson and the Mogollon Rim on the Beeline Highway, you will pass through some of the most gorgeous pristine desert and mountain vistas in Arizona. At an elevation of about 5,000 feet, the town of Payson offers a mild, four season climate in the tall pines. This small town of about 15,000 was founded in 1882 and is surrounded by the Tonto National Forest and the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation. Payson is an excellent location for year-round outdoor activities including hiking, biking, hunting, fishing, camping, rock hounding, and horseback riding. The town’s centrally located Green Valley Park has three stocked fishing lakes and free outdoor concerts in the summer. Dubbed “The Gateway to Rim Country,” Payson is steeped in Arizona history and hosts the world’s oldest continuous rodeo.

PINE Heading northwest out of Payson on Highway 260, you’ll arrive at the tiny community of Pine. With a population of around 2,000, Pine is the gateway to the Tonto Natural Bridge, nestled in the valley of Pine Creek, which flows under the bridge to the East Verde River. Originally settled by a group of four families, Pine is full of fascinating history and boasts some great attractions such as the post office established in 1884 and the Pine-Strawberry Museum. Pine is a great destination for hiking, camping, and fishing, with Bear Canyon Lake and Knoll Lake nearby. There are also several good restaurants, charming local shops and antique stores, and a gas station to fill up before you head down the road. This is the last gas stop before Camp Verde if you’re heading west on 260, so make sure your tank is full.

26 • June/July 2020 • UPPER WESTSIDER

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE STATE PARK The Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located in Pine on the Mogollon Rim. A steeply graded, but paved, road takes you down to the Visitor’s Center and unassuming parking lot that sits just above a tremendous spectacle of nature. Don’t be fooled by the peaceful, idyllic, tree-lined meadow and picnic tables, because as you move toward the edge of the picnic area, you see a giant drop into the stream below. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a natural spring-fed stream that flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

STRAWBERRY Strawberry is a beautiful and picturesque spot to stop and rest as you travel along the Mogollon Rim. This tiny unincorporated town has a population of around 1,000, but it has natural charm in abundance. Always one of our favorite places to stop for a big breakfast after a hike through the woods or an early morning visit to the Tonto Natural Bridge, Strawberry is a great place for hiking, camping, cabins, and Arizona territorial days history. One must-see site in town is the Strawberry Schoolhouse, the oldest schoolhouse still standing in the state of Arizona. The mild climate and seasonal changes along the higher elevations of the Mogollon Rim make it a great destination to visit all year round. Be sure to check LadybugsBlog.com for more ideas of great places to getaway and visit in Arizona. yourupperwestsider.com
