“Peoria Logistics Park will have a tremendous impact on our community’s long-term prosperity by bringing new industries and jobs to support our skilled workforce and fast-growing population,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria has worked strategically and persistently to attract accomplished partners like VanTrust to our city, and I am thrilled to see this project come to life.”
“In commencing construction on Phase I of Peoria Logistics Park, it has taken a lot of collaboration and partnership with multiple stakeholders to get to where we are today. Industrial demand is robust, so offering a wide array of building sizes and configurations to meet the needs of today’s users has given us a competitive edge in the market.”
The first phase features a 157,000-square-foot distribution center for a Fortune 500 company, which is expected to open in early 2023. The 17.5-acre site will feature a modern industrial warehouse with the ability to accommodate future expansion. The Phase I general contractor is Willmeng Construction.
CBRE’s Cooper Fratt and John Werstler represented VanTrust Real Estate as the landlord. The tenant was represented by Ted Liles at Cresa. Butler Design Group is the architect of the project.
“With the massive amount of expansion in the West Valley, Peoria Logistics Park is now considered an infill location, offering industrial users a central location to reach their customers Valley-wide,” says Jenna Borcherding, Director of Development at VanTrust.
“We are so grateful to be working on a build-to-suit industrial project of this caliber that further showcases the Valley’s healthy appetite for large-scale companies,” says James Murphy, CEO of Willmeng. Official Investigation Crimps Panel Supplies for U.S. Solar Industry But savvy customers can still get a good deal. By Erick O’Donnell We reported just last October about the economic rain clouds looming over the American clean energy movement as inflation threatened rising costs for solar companies and their customers. Well, when it rains, it really does pour. Now a government investigation into alleged tariff circumvention by Chinese panel manufacturers is inflicting severe supply disruptions on American solar installers, threatening to curtail the nation’s clean energy transition. A survey of 200 American solar companies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that 74 percent have had orders canceled in the wake of the investigation. “This is the biggest threat I’ve seen in my 15 years in the solar industry,” said John Smirnow, general counsel and chief marketing strategist for the SEIA. The inquiry was launched by the Department of Commerce in response to a complaint filed in February by Auxin Solar, which alleged that various panel exporters in Southeast Asian countries were owned by Chinese companies and were being used to bypass tariffs set up by the Trump administration. Val Berechet, co-founder and CEO of Arizona-based installer SunSolar Solutions, predicted that some companies will go out of business after being caught unprepared. A reliable source told Berechet that a “major manufacturer” had just canceled a 100-megawatt order of panels and raised prices 20 percent on its remaining stock. The price of a certain panel used by SunSolar has gone up 62 percent since last April. “It’s insane,” Berechet said. Not that he’s sweating it. SunSolar has spent the past few months carefully preparing to thrive in an environment marked by severe
disruption, leveraging long-established industry relationships to boost the company’s panel inventory and thereby build a buffer against supply shocks, Berechet said. The company is also taking care not to commit to projects for which the availability of materials is not certain, he said. “From our end, it’s all about being informed and being on top of it,” Berechet said. “It’s about having plans so we can deliver to customers.” “I do feel confident in our ability to get through this challenging time,” he added. Berechet foresees severe trouble for companies that are not as prepared as SunSolar. “People who are not prepared, not on top of this, will absolutely be blindsided,” he said. For homeowners thinking about going solar, the recent supply shock only increases the urgency of the decision. Panel prices have been steadily creeping up because of general supply-chain issues, and Berechet predicts significant and durable increases in ultimate project costs. For example, a rooftop-installation project making use of the panels that cost 62 percent more this year will ultimately cost the customer about 20 percent more than before. The rush by customers to take advantage of today’s lower prices will only jack up the pressure on stragglers to commit. “There’s a ton of demand and limited supply,” Berechet said. “And demand will only increase, given this.” Even in these times of economic and political volatility, time can be on your side—if you’re willing to take action. SunSolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Call us today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

IN APRIL, PEORIA MAYOR CATHY CARLAT HELD THE ANNUAL STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS WHERE SHE SHARED THE CITY’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND FUTURE GOALS OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR COMMUNITY EVENTS AROUND PEORIA. “The city of Peoria is a remarkable community that continues to be top-ranked and nationally recognized,” says Mayor Carlat. “This annual event is an opportunity to celebrate Peoria’s journey while affirming our commitment and goals as we improve our community and bring value to Peoria families.” This year, the State of the City acknowledged multiple awards and recognitions Peoria has received including Best City to Live, Work and Play in Arizona by AZ Big Media and the city’s AAA Bond Rating. The program also highlighted community members, local businesses, and the addition of 30 new public safety positions, modernization of Peoria’s main library, and expansions to public infrastructure. “I remain focused on elevating our community and
taking action that positions Peoria for a safe, secure, and prosperous future,” Mayor Carlat shares. “Peoria residents can expect continued focus on smart planning to ensure we stay ahead of growth and that we remain good stewards of our water supply by expanding our reclaimed water infrastructure to high-growth areas. In addition, Peoria remains focused on intentional economic development that supports the right industries in the right locations, and quality jobs for our skilled workforce. This strategy has positioned Peoria well and with significant momentum in several strategic areas; we remain committed to strengthening Peoria’s robust economy.”
Now, for residents who were unable to attend the events in-person, they will be able to stream the “Bright Horizons” video series from home at their own convenience at peoriaaz.gov/stateofthecity. The video series, in order, includes these topics: • Bright Horizons • A Strong and Resilient Community • Peoria’s Exceptional Quality of Life • Peoria’s First Responders • Supporting Local
You Dream. We Build.
• Strengthening Peoria’s Economy • Looking Forward
Mayor Carlat says this year’s State of the City was a celebration of Peoria’s journey over the last 68 years and taking the address on the road to multiple community events was an effort to bring the government to the people. She shared the importance of tuning into the State of the City address, even for those who missed the live events. “Local government is the closest level of government to the people and one of the most impactful,” she says. “Peoria is proud to have an entire team of skilled professionals dedicated to serving Peoria families each and every day. The annual State of the City is an opportunity to connect with residents and highlight how Peoria is working daily to enhance the quality of life for families today, and those of tomorrow.” The videos are also available for viewing on Peoria Channel 11, the city’s official television station, Facebook at @CityofPeoriaAZ, and YouTube at @DigitalPeoria. Peoria City Council Reviews New Proposed Budget Local Residents Can See Full Budget Details Online Information Courtesy of the City of Peoria THE PEORIA CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY REVIEWED THE CITY OF PEORIA FISCAL YEAR (FY) 2023 PROPOSED BUDGET. The proposed $783 million budget maintains core citizen services without any increases to taxes. “As we do in every fiscal budgeting process, we thoughtfully weigh the needs of the community and our fiscal responsibilities to develop a balanced plan,” says Jeff Tyne, Peoria city manager. “This proposed budget safeguards Peoria’s strong financial position and provides for a robust spending plan that allows us to continue to deliver exceptional city services, programs, and amenities.” The proposed budget is comprised of four major categories: the operating budget at $370.4 million represents the day-to-day operations of the city; the capital budget at $286.5 million entails large, one-time capital projects; the debt service payments at $46.9 million; and the contingency reserve at $79.2 million. Concurrently, the city is proposing a 10-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) of $1.1 billion. “Creating a balanced budget is one of the most important responsibilities of city government,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria continues to experience tremendous growth and, over the last several months, council and I have closely evaluated these trends and opportunities as part of our Growth Series study sessions. I am pleased to see a fully balanced budget that adheres to our Principles of Sound Financial Management and strategically achieves today’s goals, and those of our future, with no increase to taxes.” The CIP provides a schedule of planned improvements over the next 10 years and identifies the revenue sources that will pay for those improvements. As the community grows, new projects and amenities are needed to maintain service levels and accommodate growth. The proposed CIP supports multiple investments in water and sewer infrastructure to strengthen Peoria’s diverse and secure water portfolio. This includes the construction of several major projects underway, such as the extension of reclaimed water infrastructure, regional drainage improvements at 67th and Pinnacle Peak Road, and expansions of the Beardsley and Jomax water reclamation myhyperlocalnews.com
facilities. The CIP continues important investments in public safety, including an expansion to the Pinnacle Peak Public Safety Facility that will bring a tactical range and new fire stations to support Peoria’s continued growth. The CIP also supports the second phase of development for Paloma Community Park, trail system improvements, and multiple roadways and facilities. Equally as important to building new facilities is the responsibility to maintain current city facilities. As such, there are various projects throughout the CIP related to replacement and refurbishment of existing assets throughout Peoria. Of continued interest is the multi-year $27 million undertaking to upgrade streets, which will reduce the long-term financial impacts of aging asphalt infrastructure and increase Peoria’s elevated pavement condition index score.

The project extends from Pinnacle Peak Road to Happy Valley Road as a gateway to the city of Peoria, with connections to both Glendale and Phoenix. The project will widen 67th Avenue to three travel lanes in each direction by expanding the existing roadway with an additional lane in each direction with bike lanes and raised median islands along a portion of the roadway between the Lifetime Fitness/ Christ’s Church of the Valley (CCV) entrance and Happy Valley Road for access management and to enhance safety. Overhead utilities on the west side of 67th Avenue will be converted to underground, and the project also includes new curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm drains, streetlights, and landscaping to complete the streetscape. esidents north of Happy Valley Road will gain an R additional through lane and dedicated right turn lane at the intersection of 67th Avenue and Happy Valley Road for southbound traffic, and dual left and right turn lanes will be constructed on the west and south legs of the intersection to improve travel times. I n coordination with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, a regional stormwater drainage plan identified the need for a regional storm drainage system. The city of Peoria recently completed interim improvements on a drainage basin at Hatfield Road
and 67th Avenue. As part of the project, storm drains will be installed in 67th Avenue and a box culvert at Hatfield Road to direct stormwater to New River. PREDICTED PROJECT TIMELINE: • Regional Storm Drain Data Collection, Hydrology Analysis, and Drainage Report: Happening Now. • Preparation of Final Engineering Plans in Preparation for Construction: Summer 2022 to Fall 2023. • Right of Way Acquisition for Widening 67th Avenue: Summer 2022 to Summer 2024. • Construction: Construction activities will be phased from 2023 through 2025. The production will be directed by Theater Works’ Artistic Director Chris Hamby with musical direction by Jennifer Adams and choreography by Paul Pedersen. “Children of Eden” is based on the first 9.5 chapters of “The Book of Genesis” and explores the age-old conflict of parents and children through the generations—first
Father (God) with Adam and Eve, then Adam and Eve with their sons Cain and Abel, and finally Noah and his family. From musical theatre greats, musical lyricist, and composer Stephen Schwartz (“Godspell,” “Pippin” and “Wicked”) and director John Caird (Royal Shakespeare Company, London Royal National Theatre and Canadian Opera Company) comes a joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children and faith—not to mention centuries of unresolved family business. In this show, Adam, Eve, Noah and the Father who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children.
To create a safe space for both audience members and actors, wearing a mask is required for audience members attending Theater Works productions. Temperatures will be taken upon arrival. One performance on June 18 at 2 p.m.

A Splash of Color: Local Artist Creates a Mural For Park West Pita Jungle By Erica Shipione Photo by Edward Maney KNOWN FOR THE INCORPORATION OF LOCAL ART THROUGHOUT THEIR 24 VALLEY LOCATIONS, PITA JUNGLE’S NEWEST ART EDITION CALLS PARK WEST HOME. “Since the first day we have opened, back in November 1994, we have sought out local artists to adorn our walls with art that is for sale 100% in favor of the artists,” says co-founder Bassel Osmani. “For Pita Jungle, it was a meaningful way to engage with our community while maintaining endless art rotations to keep our restaurant fresh and perpetually re-invented.” The Park West mural was created by local artist Kyllan Maney, who has previously designed and painted another mural for the Valley-based restaurant group. For the Park West project, Maney drew her inspiration from the artwork of Georgia O’Keeffe, which translates through the designs of the bright, large-scale tropical flowers. “Having designed and painted our last mural in our Chandler Heights Pita Jungle, Kyllan Maney was our proverbial go-to person when we initiated our discussions with the Park West management team regarding a mural on the exterior facade of our restaurant,” says Osmani.
“This time around we wanted for the art to capture a wondering glance just long enough to trigger a cascade of emotions that we hoped may connect the beautiful visual to our delicious cuisine,” he adds. “With a ton of artistic expertise, a beautiful mural that reflects both Pita Jungle’s artistic inclines and Park West’s strife to aesthetic excellence saw the day. In all modesty, we are proud of it too.” Maney, who has painted several murals across the Valley, plans to continue to create and develop her artwork into various mediums that can be translated into public art including walkways, stairs, playgrounds, and freeways. “I really enjoyed painting alongside the community at Park West,” says Maney. “Everyone was so friendly. I had several people stop by and talk to me about my mural and they shared a bit about themselves. I love painting murals for this reason.” As Pita Jungle continues to be a local favorite for years to come, we can be assured local art will be a staple throughout the walls of their establishments whether it’s framed and hung or painted on a wall. “Today, with 24 locations on the map, art rotations
are managed by our art curator to propagate that ever changing artsy vibe one store after the other, as the months pass by,” says Osmani. “Murals on the other hand provide us with a sense of anchoring and stability, as the art becomes a permanent fixture within the visual field of the restaurant.”

hile complete numbers weren’t available as of press time, preliminary estimates indicate that Arizona Gives Day 2022 is on pace for another highly successful 24-hour fundraising campaign. During this year’s 24-hour online fundraiser, which took place April 5-6, 27,741 individuals donated $4.22 million to 955 Arizona nonprofits through the Arizona Gives website (AZGives.org). Also, 868 volunteers pledged 36,269 hours to help their favorite nonprofits impact their communities. It is estimated that, once tallied, the official number will be over $5 million. “We are constantly overwhelmed by the deep generosity of Arizonans throughout the state in both financial terms and through their selfless willingness to volunteer their time for nonprofit programs, services and outreach,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. The Alliance manages Arizona Gives Day in collaboration with Arizona Grantmakers Forum. FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good,”
is the presenting sponsor. “We are deeply grateful that donors in Arizona recognized the call to action to assist all the very deserving nonprofits in very uncertain times and considering the additional challenges that people face from rising inflation and higher costs for everything. We know our Arizona nonprofits are also experiencing rising costs to provide key services to fellow Arizonans.” Since the first Arizona Gives Day in 2013, more than $34 million (and counting) has been raised for Arizona nonprofits. “Each year Arizona Gives Day brings this community together to support hundreds of deserving causes, and once again it delivered,” says Joel Johnson, FirstBank East Valley market president. “All of the nonprofits that received donations will be able to continue their respective missions thanks to everyone that donated. But an organization’s job isn’t done in one day, neither is ours. Let’s continue to bolster local nonprofits, whether that be financially or with time, and we’ll ensure Arizona remains an amazing place to live.” myhyperlocalnews.com

Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Jamie Andrews and I’m the owner of a licensed homebased bakery called Sparkling Divine (sparklingdivine.com).
I’VE LIVED IN THE NORTH PEORIA AREA FOR 24 YEARS AND THE SURROUNDING AREA FOR A TOTAL OF 38 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… It’s far enough from downtown Phoenix, Glendale, or Peoria but close enough to most everything you could want or need to enjoy the city life. We’ve lived here for a long time and have made so many friends and connections that it would be difficult to leave. I love the weather and the community, and I’m so happy to call it home. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I always start my day on the treadmill (even when I’m sick),
watching my favorite TV shows. Next, I spend the morning with a homemade mocha latte (I used to be a barista), answering emails and text messages, creating invoices, and planning out my day. Then it’s off to baking or decorating all those delicious treats for my orders going out that week. MY FAMILY IS… My life. I’ve been married for 29 years, and we have two daughters who are 26 and 23 years old. My oldest, an ultrasound tech, just got engaged and will be getting married next year. My youngest will be finishing up her schooling this month to be a sterile processing technician and already has interviews lined up for potential jobs. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Chocolate and coffee. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “The Sound of Music.” It’s been a favorite of mine since I was a child, and I was always thrilled when I could watch it with my girls when they were little. However, they never really appreciated me singing all the songs at the top of my voice for some reason. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… An astronaut, veterinarian, or a teacher. I have a teaching degree in
Elementary Education but gave up my career early on to stay at home with my girls.
going through cancer treatment. A dear friend of mine put me in touch with them a couple years ago and I’ve been contributing desserts once a month ever since. Their restaurant just opened back up not too long ago. Make sure to stop by one day for breakfast or lunch. You can find more info at thejoybusdiner. com.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Any song from Journey or Cyndi Lauper. THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME ARE… My family. Everything has either been for them or with them.
MY LIFE IS… Not perfect but it’s the one that I’ve been given. I’ve worked hard to be who I am and where I am. I don’t take many things, friends, or family members for granted. I know they can be taken from me any day, so I try be grateful for what I’ve been blessed with in my life.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS…Hands down our dog Chewie! He’s our little severely anxious Cockapoo that speaks to us. He is the silliest and most loving dog and a source of constant entertainment every day. THE PERFECT DAY… Is taking a day trip somewhere in Arizona with my husband and daughters. We’ve had so many adventures including hiking in Sedona, shopping in downtown Prescott, and many years ago hanging out with Farmer Buzz at Young’s Farm that used to be in Dewey. It always involves finding hidden gems to eat or have coffee at. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… The Joy Bus Diner. It is such a great local restaurant and organization that provides meals once a week to families
THE BEST GIFTS I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… My daughters. I never knew how difficult and satisfying the role of a mother could be. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Spending time in Maui with my husband and daughters. We took a trip a couple of years ago and it was the best vacation we’ve ever had. I would not have changed one moment of that trip and I wish we could escape there more often. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” from Eleanor Roosevelt.
Bringing you a little sparkle and a sweet taste of heaven! Hello! I’m Jamie and I LOVE baking delicious gourmet treats that sparkle and taste like heaven! I’m a fully licensed and certified home-based baker located in Peoria, Arizona.

ay has arrived and, as we all know, the higher temperatures are here as well. That’s okay, we’ve all been told that it’s a dry heat!
It isn’t usually a correlation, but this year as the temperatures were rising so were the interest rates. The good news is the home values have been as hot as an Arizona summer. One article I saw referenced homeowners who made more in equity than they did at their job this past year. That is incredible, but it is also unsustainable. Just about all real estate experts whose articles I read or interviews I listen to believe that the increases are going to slow. I believe the same thing. We have had such high increases in prices that it can’t continue. I just had a smaller home that I listed and sold and the increase in that one subdivision was over 20% in less than 60 days. It’s not hard to figure out that it can’t continue. The increases will slow down. That 20% in two months will get to 8% in a month and then 5% and then 3% and so on. Compared to the increases we have been experiencing it sounds horrible if your home increases only 1% a month but that would still be a fantastic 12% in equity in a year! So, the moral of the story? It is a great time to be a homeowner! If you myhyperlocalnews.com

I want to mention that as our temperatures increase, we will see the number of calls to the HVAC companies increase as well. With costs going up I want to highlight the benefit of having a home warranty. The savings can be incredible if your HVAC system goes out and you have a home warranty. I’ve known my home warranty representative for over a decade, and she has offered a first-year discount price to anyone who would like to sign up through me. Give me a call at 623-203-1800 or email me if you are interested. The savings would be around $100 for your first-year price. Education City of Peoria Announces Scholarship Program
R
ecently, the Peoria City Council approved the PeoriaAZ Promise program through a community partnership with Glendale Community College (GCC) and Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation. Beginning now, PeoriaAZ Promise will award college scholarships to Peoria students who qualify for financial assistance. “PeoriaAZ Promise is near and dear to my heart,” says Bridgett Binsbacher, former Peoria City Councilmember. “The mission is to provide easier access to affordable education and I’m so proud that we’ll be able to offer this program to Peoria families.” In February, the Peoria City Council approved setting aside a portion of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars that the city received to fund a scholarship program. Peoria’s Neighborhood and Human Services Department developed the PeoriaAZ
Promise program based on the national program, College Promise, and allocated $200,000 for the program over a period of three years. GCC and the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation will be the responsible parties for the operation and administration of the program. “Financial aid goes beyond tuition and fees. There are living allowance and cost of attendance issues that our students face that too often serve as a barrier to higher education,” says Brian Spicker, president of Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation. “The foundation is thrilled to partner with Glendale Community College and the city of Peoria’s PeoriaAZ Promise program to deliver this needed support.” “Glendale Community College is honored to partner with the city of Peoria in this excellent example of collaboration to support Peoria residents and students to uplift a community
through education,” says Dr. Terry Leyba Ruiz, president of GCC. The program is designed to help provide financial assistance for students whose federal financial aid and Pell grants do not cover the entire cost of college tuition and fees. The PeoriaAZ Promise program offers the opportunity for low-income families to cover necessary expenses to ensure success in completing post-secondary education. “For communities to continue to grow and prosper, families need to have consistent and affordable access to quality post-secondary education,” says Sherie Steele, Peoria’s family and
youth services manager. “The PeoriaAZ Promise program will bridge the gap for Peoria families who are paying for college by supplementing federal financial aid, paving the way for students to gain the knowledge, skills, and training needed to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow.” College Promise is a national program designed to help youth and adults from low-income, high-need communities gain access to affordable, quality education beyond high school. Additional information about the PeoriaAZ Promise program is available on the city’s website at peoriaaz.gov. To learn more about College Promise, go to collegepromise.org.

The range, operated solely by volunteers, is a livefire cyber warfare range created to rapidly train cybersecurity talent with hands-on learning through innovation in cybersecurity techniques. Through a unique internship opportunity, second-year students in the MET Professional Academy’s Technology program have been working diligently over the last few weeks to get the range ready for community members and veterans to come in and train in cybersecurity through hands-on learning experiences that are developed and coordinated by co-founder Brett Scott.
“Our partnership with the Arizona Cyber Warfare Range has provided MET Professional Academy students with a unique opportunity to share their passion for Cybersecurity with community members in the West Valley,” says Chad Eichenlaub, director of the MET Professional Academy. “Throughout the internship, students have had an opportunity to problem solve and increase knowledge through collaboration with peers, instructors, and community members. Summer Water Safety STAY COOL AND SAFE WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS
By Jill Frier
S
ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for the Valley of the Sun, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies, and first responders come out in droves this time of year cautioning parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including lakes, canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs, and ponds. Anyone who cares for children should be aware of the potential dangers and possible tragedies of drowning. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your kids safe around water as the weather warms up and pools become more attractive to children everywhere. PREVENTING DROWNING In addition to teaching kids how to swim, the best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone or the iPad down and be sure to always keep children within reach of an adult. Never leave a child alone around a
water source. It only takes two inches of water and a few seconds to drown. OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT DROWNING: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house. • Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys, or ladders away from pool fences. • Teach your children to always ask for permission to go near the water so they develop quality water safety habits at an early age. • Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area and don’t store toys near the pool. • Don’t allow anyone to swim alone – always swim with a buddy. • Drink plenty of water, even if you aren’t thirsty, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. • Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices near the pool and readily available. • Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are near a pool or water source and take the kids with you when you leave the area. • If a child is missing, check the water first because every second counts to prevent drowning.
• Make sure everyone in your family, children and adults, learn to swim. • Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after you use them. Store containers upside down so they don’t collect water and keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed. HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Do you know what to do in an emergency? Accidents are unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, whether a child or an adult. THE MAIN STEPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU FIND SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN A WATER EMERGENCY ARE: 1. Yell for help and pull the person out of the water. 2. Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions. 3. Begin CPR, if you know it. 4. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.
Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life. LEARNING TO SWIM One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning. There are many options for swimming lessons and a range of prices, times, and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town or go to a city pool or nonprofit community center. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy our almost year-round sunshine by the swimming pool, lake, or pond. Water is a great way to cool off and have fun but take steps to be safe and prevent accidents or drowning while you splash around.

Timely Health Updates From Local Experts
M
ay is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness Month and Stroke Awareness Month. We checked in with local health experts to find out more about these two important health issues. NATIONAL SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of Justin Moser, M.D. Did you know that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined? You might think it’s unlikely to affect you until you’re older, but one specific type of skin cancer – melanoma – is one of the most common cancers you’ll find even among young adults. Melanoma also accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths due to its aggressive nature. Especially in the hot and sunny climate we enjoy here in Arizona, skin cancer and melanoma deserve our attention. The best thing you can do for your skin is wear a good SPF sunscreen (30 or greater) that protects your skin against
UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). Put it on every couple of hours that you’re outside – even if it’s cloudy. With proper care and monitoring, you can prevent skin cancer or catch it early, which lessens the chance you’ll be dealing with an advanced stage of cancer. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your skin for anything suspicious, and why getting regular skin checks from a dermatologist is so critical. It’s recommended that you begin annual skin screenings in your 20s or 30s, but if you’re in the sun a lot or have a family history of skin cancer, you should talk to your doctor about being screened sooner. The good news is that proper screenings catch skin cancers earlier. The earlier skin cancers are treated, the higher the chance of a cure. Even with melanoma, if it’s detected early, the fiveyear survival rate is 99%.
STROKES NEED FAST RESPONSE: MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Abrazo Central Campus Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Lisa Ziomek, Stroke Care Coordinator at Abrazo Central Campus. More than 87 percent of strokes in the
U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital that can provide the right treatment in time. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: • Face – Ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? • Arms – Can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? • Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange? • Time – If you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
ON NETFLIX
“Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” A man recalls his childhood in 1969, which seems to be more fantastical than others. Richard Linklater uses his rotoscope animation style again, appropriate as it gives the film a feeling of a memory or a polaroid come to life. That’s the best way to sum up this movie— one long memory recount of a childhood that seems too insane to be true. It’s sort of an aimless movie, with its big selling point merely taking up less than a quarter of the film and its focus could be seen as boring or stretched out into a feature length. But there’s still enough charm from the actors to bring out the sincerity in it and of memories of a nostalgic time. And when it gets into the fantastical, it still fits and is entertaining. A nice, short ride.
IN THEATERS “Ambulance” Two brothers find themselves being chased across Los Angeles after stealing an ambulance with two hostages. A film 32 • May 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER
full of pure adrenaline, “Ambulance” is Michael Bay’s strongest work in a decade. This is an empathetic piece, one that explores what happens to people forced by desperation into a terrible situation, eloquently shown in performances by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzláez. Even so, the film doesn’t forget to be the thrill ride it promised, where Bay’s kinetic and fast editing is complemented by a more unhinged performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s two hours of continuous chaos, with some of the most impressive action of Bay’s career where we feel the isolation of the ambulance while also getting the impression that the entire city is after these two. In an age where action films underdeliver on their most important aspects, this film is a real triumph.
In a movie where every character must play different versions of themselves, each actor delivers on the promise, particularly Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, who go back and forth between hilarious and heartbreaking in their performances. This is a movie where you can watch fantastic fight sequences with impeccable choreography followed by some immature humor that brings the laughs, followed by one of the most crushing sequences in a film this year that happens to be between two rocks. And somehow, it all comes together and makes for what may be the best picture of the year. It’s not often we see something like this, and everyone should experience it.
biggest sin though is that, despite its claim as a horror film, there’s no tense nature to be found and it can’t even hide behind the “slow-burn” handle. Goran Stolevski’s directing is impressive and he shows some genuine promise for future films, but as a writer, it is what causes the whole film to collapse.
MAY RELEASES MAY 6 • “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” MAY 13 • “Firestarter” (In theaters and Peacock) • “Pleasure” (Limited) MAY 20 • “Downton Abbey: A New Era” • “Men” (Limited) • “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” (Disney+) MAY 27 • “Top Gun: Maverick” • “The Bob’s Burgers Movie”
“Everything Everywhere All At Once” A woman discovers that a multiverse with several versions of her exists and she is its last hope at survival. It’s rare to see a movie that pushes every limit that film can have, and yet, here it is. This film is a symphony of colors, chaos, and love for people who are broken and keep going.
“You Won’t Be Alone” A witch travels between various bodies to see the human experience. Sometimes, you come across a film that you want to admire but can’t. “You Won’t Be Alone” starts out well, with one of the most quietly nerve-wracking scenes of the year. But after that, we experience a very dull film; one that comes off as aimless. For a film that’s all about the experience of being human, none of the bodies our lead inhabits deliver a threedimensional feeling and even the usually great Noomi Rapace seems bored.
