Peoria is a Place Where We All Support One Another By Mesquite District Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher THE CITY OF PEORIA IS PROUD OF ITS RELATIONSHIPS WITH LOCAL NONPROFIT AGENCIES THAT PROVIDE VALUABLE SERVICES TO RESIDENTS. Each year, the city conducts a grant process to allocate federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as well as city general funds to nonprofit partners. These funds are granted to nonprofit agencies for an array of purposes to assist Peoria’s youth, elderly, individuals with disabilities, homeless, and other underprivileged individuals and families. As part of this process, the city collaborates with residents and nonprofit partners to identify community needs. Nonprofit partners submit grant applications to the city for activities and projects designed to meet these needs. The Council Not-for-Profit Subcommittee, consisting of three city council members, meets with applicants to review the proposed programs and then recommends funding for the programs that will best meet these needs. These recommendations are then adopted by the full city council during the budget process. I have been fortunate to be part of this committee that interviews and selects the proposals that bring such vital resources to many of our residents. Grants are awarded to nonprofit agencies to provide referrals; health, education, and employment services; food;
rent, mortgage, and utility assistance; domestic violence intervention; homeless outreach and prevention; new housing; housing rehabilitation; shelter; access to public facilities; and an array of other needed services. The programs developed by these nonprofits provide critical resources to many Peoria residents. I continue to be so impressed with the diversity of programs to select from and I am grateful for the valuable partnerships with so many nonprofits. In Fiscal Year 2020-2021, Peoria awarded more than $1.1 million in annual grants to more than 36 nonprofit agencies who were able to assist nearly 15,000 individuals and families with much-needed services. In addition, these nonprofit agencies were able to recruit more than 2,500 volunteers who donated over 68,000 hours helping Peoria residents. We are truly a community that cares about and for each other. Many years ago, I left a corporate career and chose to lead a nonprofit that serves youth charities and organizations in Peoria and the West Valley. I know first-hand how dedicated local nonprofits are to making a difference in our city. Nonprofits create safety nets for individuals and families that are beyond the scope of government. Leveraging philanthropy (your donations), government grants and corporate partnerships, nonprofits bring services and programs like the arts, childcare, housing and so much more to our community. By working together, we can
MAYOR PRO TEM VICKI HUNT AND COUNCILMEMBER BRIDGET BINSBACHER create a healthy, vibrant community where everyone is lifted. We are grateful for our partnerships with the nonprofit sector and their work to make Peoria a place where we all support one another. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN YOUR COMMUNITY? If there is something you would like to see in our district, or if you have any concerns, I want to know. Contact me directly at 623-773-7306 or bridget.binsbacher@peoriaaz.gov. Help Beautify Peoria By Entering a One-of-a-Kind Art Contest Hurry – The Deadline To Submit Artwork is April 10! Photo Courtesy of the City of Peoria CALLING ALL ARTISTS! The city of Peoria is adding more art to the streetscape by showcasing artwork designed by members of the community on utility boxes throughout the city. Up to 15 artists will be chosen for the 2022 Utility Box Art Wrap Contest. The deadline to submit the artwork is Sunday, April 10. Selected artists’ designs will be printed on vinyl and wrapped around the boxes by a third-party design 4 • April 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER
fabricator. The intent of the project is to beautify the utility boxes, bringing art to otherwise utilitarian surfaces. It also allows local artists the opportunity to develop public art experience. This opportunity is open to artists, illustrators, designers, students, and otherwise creative community members residing in the Peoria area, working in any medium, as long as the final artwork can be translated and digitally reproduced on a twodimensional vinyl wrap. Artists can submit up to two designs.
“Taking something as functional as a utility box and turning it into an expression of the unique character of our community immediately adds vibrant energy to the street,” says Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria is home to incredibly talented artists and their contributions to this project cannot be understated.” Utility box locations will be throughout the city of Peoria and the art wraps will be installed in May. City News Republic Services Secure Approval on Disputed Waste Transfer Station By Jenna-Lee Neff A RECENT MARICOPA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS MEETING UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED AN INDUSTRIAL ZONING CHANGE FOR THE PROPOSED SITE OF A WASTE TRANSFER STATION IN NORTHWEST PEORIA. The decision came as a blow to many concerned locals who have spent two years opposing the site. The decision came at the end of a twohour hearing and discussion that included public input for and against the rezoning of the 10-acre site. The approval marks the end of an ongoing battle between many residents in the local community and Republic Services to keep the waste transfer station out of the area. “I am opposed for three reasons: health, environment and property values,” says Robert Baxter, who identified himself as a member of the Crossriver HOA. “It is morally and ethically irresponsible to place this kind of facility so close to a residential area. The wind contamination, dust and appearance will be unacceptable.” According to Stephen Anderson, an attorney with the Phoenix-based firm Gammage & Burnham who represents the developer, the transfer station building will be one of the smallest among the 32 existing stations in Maricopa County. He also discussed features to mitigate negative effects on the local community. These include: having all loads tarped with trans-
fers only taking place inside the building, the building being closed on three sides, and misters that will help keep odor down and reduce the risk of fire. Supervisor Clint Hickman, who represents the area where the proposed facility will be built, addressed general concerns that the rezoning of the parcel from IND-2 to IND-3 will set a precedent for other heavy industrial projects in the area. “That’s not going to fly with me,” Hickman says. “I want to let everybody know that because that’s what happens sometimes. You put something there and then it grows into something else that residents further and further do not want to see, and they use that as a magnet. That’s not going to be; that’s not in my thought pattern.”
You Dream. We Build.
The project has received a large amount of pushback since the initial announcement in early 2020, including a Facebook group called “Happy Valley Says NO to a Waste Transfer Station” that has accumulated more than 4,300 members. Local homeowners have expressed concerns about noise, odor, property values and public health in their arguments about bringing a waste transfer station to the area. Community feedback led Republic Services to abandon plans for the first proposed site in late 2020 before announcing their intention to build in the industrial area near El Mirage Road and Loop 303 in February 2021. According to Maricopa County’s planning
and development director Tom Ellsworth, the county has received approximately 8,000 letters, petitions, and emails regarding the site – with about 5,900 in opposition and about 1,800 in support. The meeting was only for the approval of the rezoning of the parcel. Republic Services still has to submit specific plans for the development of the waste transfer station for future approval along with infrastructure improvement plans. Approval of the zoning change was based on a list of conditions that will have to be adhered to before and during the operation of the station. Emerging Artists To Display Their Talents in Peoria Photos Courtesy of IN FLUX IN FLUX, A LOCAL ARTS PROJECT, BRINGS TOGETHER ART, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND PROPERTY MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE GREATER PHOENIX AREA. Through its programming, artists are given the opportunity to expand their skills, challenge their creativity, and garner public recognition. Now in its tenth cycle, IN FLUX’s promotional partner, Artlink (a Valley-based nonprofit supporting artists by providing necessary programs and resources to expand their careers), facilitated the call to artists on behalf of IN FLUX partner cities. Peoria is one of the partner cities for this Valley-wide initiative.
A MURAL BY LAUREN LEE
Boyd, who has had a long history in the realm of art from performing at Cirque du Soleil to joining the Burning Man community in Las Vegas, eventually found his way to Phoenix where he opened his own metal shop. Today, his attention is directed to creating custom art for clients throughout the United States. He has begun transitioning to creating more sculptural art in the most recent years. Some of Boyd’s most recent work can be seen on the downtown streets of Phoenix. Commissioned to create a large sculpture that allows people to interact with art, he created a larger-than-life robot that sits on a bench while fascinated as he reads a book. “I view every artistic project as a chance to explore my limits. A chance to step into the creative unknown. It is part of my life’s adventure,” says Boyd.
Locally, artist Lauren Lee will be creating a mural at Park West shopping center. In addition, artists Doug Boyd and Jennifer Levine will be creating sculptures at the Peoria Main Library and the Sunrise Mountain Library respectively. Their art pieces will be completed in June and on display a full year for the public to enjoy. ART AT PARK WEST SHOPPING CENTER Artist Lauren Lee is known for creating beautiful, colorful murals with intricate details. Lee enjoys bringing the vitality of nature back to the city through her artwork. In a recent solo show, she presented the theme of “Waheguru,” or “The Ecstatic Totality of God” in Sikhism. These pieces of art included stoic tigers and beautiful floral landscape amidst geometric patterns.
MURALIST LAUREN LEE “My artwork is a reflection of not only my creativity but my spiritual journey as well,” says Lee. “By creating works of art for my community, I am spreading that positivity and growth with the people around me—which is extremely rewarding.” Staying true to her passion for creating artwork of plants and animal life, Lee will begin crafting a large-scale desert botanical mural, featuring two Gila Woodpecker birds on a saguaro with desert flowers for Park West. “I wanted to bring large scale, fine art to this area and create a piece where you can see something new every 6 • April 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

SCULPTURES AT LOCAL LIBRARIES For their work, Boyd and Levine will be creating sculptures at the Peoria Main Library and Sunrise Mountain Library. Levine is known for utilizing bright colors, nature, animals, and whimsy in her artwork. She has been creating ceramic mosaics for about three years and learned to make tile by taking a weeklong intensive tile making class at Santa Theresa Tile Works in Tucson. Recently, she made a large climate change mosaic that is on display in Florida. To move toward her passion for sculptural work, she has been crafting a “Butterball” sculpture for Sunrise Mountain Library.

The Future Isn’t Looking Brighter for Fossil Fuel Diehards or Solar Stragglers. Go Solar Today. By Erick O’Donnell We already warned Arizonans back in October about looming price increases for both renewable and conventional energy sources. It’s starting to look as though we might have understated our case. World events are conspiring to further intensify the economic pressures bearing down on energy consumers, not just through higher oil and natural gas prices but also through rising costs for solar system components. The victims will include not just those who are stubbornly wedded to fossil fuels, but also the people who are forward-thinking enough to contemplate making the green transition but aren’t fast enough to commit in time to secure today’s still low prices. Now more than ever, it is crucial that homeowners go solar right away to lock in predictable low prices and big lifetime savings. Those financial benefits are still available, but they are poised to be eroded both by inflation itself, which is raising the cost of the panels, and by the government’s ongoing fight against inflation, which will raise the cost of financing a home solar system. Meanwhile, the alternative to going solar, sticking with fossil fuels, isn’t looking much better as war and sanctions halt the flow of natural gas and oil to the world energy market. Energy consumers should not expect to see imminent relief from high prices at the pump or on their monthly utility bills. International sanctions on Russia for its recent invasion of Ukraine have already blown up the numbers on gas station marquees, and the consequences are not likely to stop there. “Affordability is already deteriorating, and security and reliability are faltering,” Ryan Severino, chief economist at investment firm Jones Lang Lasalle, told “The Atlantic.” “In the short run, this means consumers will simply pay higher prices for whatever energy they can obtain for their immediate needs.” If Arizona homeowners want to seek shelter under solar panels, they
need to move fast because prices are projected to continue the trend of steady increases that began with the pandemic in 2020. “[Our] analysis indicates that module costs will continue to climb to their highest levels yet in [the third quarter of ] 2022 due to rising costs for module inputs such as polysilicon, silver, aluminum, and copper,” wrote energy economist Shenying Wu in the March edition of Rystad Energy’s Supply Chain Newsletter. “The spikes in the cost of energy and shipping are also pushing up end prices.” Prices could even threaten the nation’s solar energy rollout this year as some homeowners cancel installations in the face of swelling project costs, according to an earlier Rystad Energy report. “Panel prices are still low enough for homeowners to realize significant savings and profits,” says Michael O’Donnell, a partner and the head of sales at Arizona installation firm SunSolar Solutions. “But with price pressures looming on the horizon, the financial benefits could start shrinking at any moment.” Recent economic turbulence only adds to the usual reasons for making the switch sooner rather than later. Beginning in September, APS will reduce how much it pays new system owners for the surplus energy they export to the grid, just as it does every year. And the federal government’s tax credit for home solar systems is scheduled to drop from 26 percent of the system cost to 22 percent at the start of next year. Since it takes three months to get a system up and running, new customers will have to commit by October if they want to maximize their tax savings. The question is not whether energy costs will rise. They will rise, whether you are on board with the Green New Deal or think climate change is bunk. The question is whether you’re prepared to thrive in the coming world of economic and geopolitical turbulence. If you’re ready to secure energy independence and security for your family, then contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Little Free Libraries Encourage Readers Throughout Peoria By Ava Hiniker Photos Courtesy of the City of Peoria TO MANY OF US, THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE MAGICAL AND ENTICING THAN A GOOD BOOK. Now, thanks to the Little Free Library organization, Peoria residents—especially young readers—can discover new stories every day through the city’s new little free libraries. Little Free Library is a nationwide, nonprofit organization determined to strengthen communities through the creation of public book exchanges. With over 100,000 little libraries across the nation, it was only a matter of time before this movement spread throughout the Valley. With the help of the city of Peoria, the What’s Happen’n Art Movement, and the Peoria Public Library, Councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Vicki Hunt led the initiative to introduce eight little free libraries to Peoria residents. “I spent 26 years prior to politics as a high school English teacher so this really has

been a passion project for me,” says Hunt. “By encouraging kids to make use of the little libraries, this has been a great way of working toward my goal of promoting literacy, one book at a time.” While the little libraries feature titles for youth, they also have books geared toward all readers. The little libraries are lovingly crafted boxes and cases set up across the city. Publicly available for anyone who wishes to use them, visitors are encouraged to search inside the libraries for a book of their choosing to take home. In return, they will also leave a book of their own within the library for someone else to appreciate later, allowing the cycle to continue all over again. This ensures that there never is a shortage of new and exciting stories for readers while also promoting sharing and unity throughout the community. With there always being something new and exciting in these little libraries, readers are always welcome to come back for more whenever they finish a book.
The What’s Happen’n Art Movement, or WHAM, was tasked with taking these specialized little library boxes and making them their own. With an extra pinch of pizzazz through painted designs and colorful characters, the WHAM youth groups were able to give each adorable library its own vibrant personality. The Peoria Public Library also worked to provide the first set of books for each library box. With books for all ages and tales of all genres, the library helped to send fantastic stories into homes across the city. “I find that the little libraries placed in neighborhoods are able to add a sense of community to the folks who live there,” says Hunt. “Whether they’re around bus stations, shopping malls, or private homes, these free little libraries make book acquisition easy for everyone.” To learn more about the Little Free Library organization, visit littlefreelibrary. org. Earlier this year, participating Girl Scouts across central and northern Arizona sold more than 2.6 million boxes of delicious cookies, building essential entrepreneurial skills imperative to leadership and future success along the way. Northwest Peoria’s very own Girl Scout Troop 558 sold the most cookies out of any troop in the state. “Our 2022 Girl Scout Cookie season was the most memorable one yet. Despite selling during a pandemic and experiencing inventory shortages, our girls were confident and innovative as they engaged with customers across central and northern Arizona. We celebrate their entrepreneurial spirit and are grateful for the generous support from the community,” shares Christina Spicer, Interim Co-CEO of GSACPC. The funds raised through the cookie program will allow local girls to take part in a variety of programs, community outreach projects, and enrichment activities over the next year. The Girl Scout Cookie Program also plays an important role in helping girls learn essential life skills like decision making, money management, people
skills, business ethics and goal setting. It is the largest girlled entrepreneurial program in the world. All proceeds from the cookie program support Arizona’s Girl Scouts. HOW THE COOKIES CRUMBLED BY THE NUMBERS: • 7,063 girls in central and northern Arizona sold 2,686,833 cookies. • The per-girl average was 380 boxes each, up from 320 boxes each in 2021. • The top cookie seller, Kaitlyn of Troop 2232 in Glendale, sold 7,788 boxes of cookies. • The top troop, Troop 558 in Peoria, sold 64,886 boxes of cookies. • 843,710 packages of cookies were sold online through its Digital Cookie program. • The most popular cookie sold was Girl Scout Thin Mints. • In its first year, 247,456 boxes of Adventurefuls found their way to local homes. All funds raised stay in Arizona, ensuring girls will have the resources they need to develop into tomorrow’s leaders. For more information, visit girlscoutsaz.org.

From 10 a.m.-noon, guests can get a picture with the Easter Bunny as well as enjoy face painting and a special visit from the Spring Princess. During the event, Park West also hosts the Mystery Egg Giveaway — while supplies last, each guest will receive one egg filled with “mystery” prizes totaling more than $1,000. “It is one of our missions as a center to provide added value to the neighborhood beyond the vast array of tenants that we have here at Park West,” says Kelly Price, business development manager for Park West. “Hosting events such as our Easter Egg-stravaganza allows us the opportunity to further integrate ourselves into the community and enjoy special occasions together.” Then on Saturday, April 23, Park West presents the Park West Celebrates Earth Day event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The event features a free community shred with Shred the Word and free reusable water bottles courtesy of the city of Peoria. Located in the parking lot adjacent to the Park West Market, the event is hosting a collection drive for Treasures 4 Teachers. Much-needed items include school supplies, arts and craft supplies, as well as toys, sports balls, containers, and plastic bags of all size. “Earth Day is an important time to recognize how essential it is for all of us to do our part to conserve and preserve our planet and help others,” says Price. “We’re always looking to evolve our offerings and create local partnerships to present fun, meaningful events that benefit important local causes and organizations.” Added to these events, the center continues to evolve with the addition of new tenants, such as the much-anticipated opening of Wildflower on Tuesday, April 26. Known around the state for its delicious scratch-made menu (including homemade breads and bakery items), Wildflower brings Park West diners its signature favorites, including salads, sandwiches, seasonal specialties, a wide array of breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees, specialty coffee drinks and selections just for the little ones. Other new tenants expected to open soon at Park West include Bully Brew Co., Global Golf Lounge, Kitchen Gourmet, Pangaea Land of the Dinosaurs, Stretch Lab and Yama Sushi. Keep an eye out for other new tenant announcements in the coming months as Park West continues to grow. Park West is located at 9744 W. Northern Avenue. Grand Canyon University, State of Arizona Partnership to Cover College Costs for Foster Children ARIZONA FOSTER CHILDREN WILL RECEIVE A FULL SCHOLARSHIP AT GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY (GCU) THANKS TO A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF CHILD SAFETY.
to student worker jobs, mentoring, life skills programming designed to acclimate foster students into college life, and post-graduation planning assistance to help envision their path ahead.
The Fostering Futures Scholarships college pathway program covers 100% of the costs for tuition, fees, and year-round room and board for qualified Arizona foster children by combining GCU’s scholarships with state and federal funding resources.
“We strive to ensure that a private, Christian education is within reach for all – and students who have aged out of the state’s foster care system should be no exception,” says GCU President Brian Mueller. “Our affordable tuition and room and board rates help make this opportunity possible, and we already have faculty, staff and students on campus who are familiar with the foster care system. With the right support system in place, these students have the tools to earn a college degree without incurring any debt and set themselves up to achieve great things in their adult lives.”
“With this program, Arizona’s foster kids will get the support they need to get a college degree,” says Governor Doug Ducey. “GCU’s commitment to academically supporting foster youth and providing them with year-round housing is a game-changer. This scholarship program offers a gateway for foster youth to realize their untapped potential. I commend GCU for extending this generous offer to these young adults.”

Nationwide, fewer than 10% of youth in foster care graduate with a four-year degree. In addition to the cost of higher education, housing stability is among the biggest challenges for youth aging out of foster care. The Fostering Futures Scholarship program provides recipients with a year-round home on an active, vibrant college campus in a supportive environment, as well as the opportunity to begin their adult life without any student debt. The program will also incorporate additional support elements such as free tutoring, access
The first Fostering Futures Scholarships are scheduled to be awarded for the 2022-23 academic year. “Obtaining a college degree is difficult for every young adult, but especially so for youth in foster care, who face additional barriers,” says DCS Director Mike Faust. “But foster youth are profoundly resilient and can flourish if they are given the tools and support they need. GCU’s scholarship program will help remove the barriers so they can succeed in college and life. We are honored to partner with GCU on this scholarship program and are grateful for their continued commitment to Arizona’s foster youth.”

How far do you have to walk to get a glass of water? It is probably less than our walk, which is 3.7 miles, the average distance some villagers must walk to get water each day.” The route will be marked off and is on a concrete walkway so wear comfortable walking or running shoes. It is not a race or competition. For those who wish to just donate and not participate in the walk, that is an option as well. Safety Tips for Lake Adventures By Lynn Lovelady, Scorpion Bay Marina General Manager SPENDING TIME WITH THOSE WE LOVE AT LAKE PLEASANT ENJOYING THE IDYLLIC LAKE VIEWS, COOL WATER, AND THE WARM SUN IS AT THE TOP OF MANY PEOPLE’S LISTS THIS SPRING AND SUMMER. As you make your way to Scorpion Bay Marina, here are some tips to follow for a safe and enjoyable adventure.
1. ARRIVE EARLY: This is one of the busiest times of the year at Lake Pleasant. Visitors to the lake should plan to get there early to get a spot and avoid rushing and speeding to maintain safety for everyone. Be aware of others around you and take extra precautions to prevent accidents and injury. Also be sure to check the Maricopa County Parks Department website for upto-date park information. 2. DESIGNATE A CAPTAIN: At the beginning of the day, each family or group should assign someone to act as the head of the party. The captain makes sure all members of the party are safe and are where they are supposed to be throughout the day. Keeping an ongoing headcount during the day is reccomended. 3. DRINK RESPONSIBLY: Although most water safety organizations warn lakegoers to avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, those who choose to imbibe alcohol should do so responsibly. Be sure to keep hydrated with water even when not thirsty and be sure to avoid operating a boat or any other watercraft while intoxicated. Assign a designated driver not only for your time on the lake but also for your drive home.
myhyperlocalnews.com
4. LIFEJACKETS ARE REQUIRED: The moment kids arrive at the Scorpion Bay dock, it’s a good idea to put a lifejacket on them. State and federal law require children 13 and under to wear a wellfitting, Coast Guard-approved life jacket when they are on board any boat; all others must have a life jacket readily accessible. It’s important to note that all people on personal watercraft or being towed by a boat must wear a life jacket regardless of their age. Remember to always be sure to have enough life jackets in your watercraft for everyone on board. 5. HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE: Although the lake is a place for people to kick back and relax, it is an important time to keep hydrated. Protecting your skin with sunscreen and protective attire—including hats and sunglasses— along with reducing activity during the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. are all parts of staying hydrated. Dehydration is often the root cause of sickness and accidents on the lake, so be sure to learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses to make sure everyone in your group stays healthy.
6. NEVER SWIM ALONE: The buddy system is always a good idea around water. Make sure before you do any activities on the lake that everyone has a buddy to keep their eye on throughout the day— swimming alone is unsafe, even for adults. Never leave young children unattended near water and never ask a child to watch another child near water. 7. KEEP AN EYE ON THE WEATHER: Weather conditions can change quickly at Lake Pleasant. If there is any chance of inclement weather, be sure to be up to date on forecasts at the National Weather Service site. Any visitors on land should stay out of the washes. Also, if you are on a watercraft, make sure to make your way to the docks before weather conditions become dangerous. Overcrowded docks can prevent visitors from being able to get their watercraft out of the water safely. Scorpion Bay is Arizona’s premier floating playground, offering everything from daily pontoon and ski boat rentals to floating cabins for a week in the sun to slips for longterm live-aboard lifestyles. Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Ruth Rotkowitz.
I HAVE LIVED IN PEORIA FOR 12 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… It was an easy decision to make to move to warm weather, plenty of sunshine, and being close to family. My husband I were snowbirds from New Jersey for our first three years here when we decided to move to Peoria permanently because we visited often and really enjoyed our time here. MY FAMILY IS… I’ve been married to my husband, Irv, for almost 52 years. We have two adult children, both living in California. My sister and her family are here in Scottsdale. My mother is 97 and lives in Scottsdale as well. My father passed away a few years ago. My parents are both from Vienna and are survivors of the Holocaust. Both were able to escape the Nazis, eventually finding their way to New York, where they met. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… A lot of coffee. I like to get out and walk most days. Bullets,” a community-wide education program at ASU’s Hayden Library now through April 17.
and am now a published author. I have written two fiction books: “Escaping the Whale” and a prequel called “The Whale Surfaces.” The books follow a New York guidance counselor, who is a child of Holocaust survivors, as she attempts to appear normal to the world while concealing the inner demons that plague her and constitute her legacy of inherited trauma. I also have a blog, ruthswhale. com/blog, that features interviews with Holocaust survivors. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Books. I’ve loved books my whole life. I can’t imagine not having a book to read at all times. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A writer. And lucky for me, I still do! THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.” THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My daughter. She is a very compassionate and remarkable person, extremely creative and open-minded. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Andy Borowitz in “The New Yorker.” THE PERFECT DAY… My perfect day starts with coffee, of course! And then time outside in Arizona’s beautiful sunshine, reading a good book. MY LIFE IS… Just the way it should be. I’m very fortunate to have a happy marriage, healthy and successful children, and time to spend with my mother.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… There are so many ways to think about this question, but I’d have to say the birth of my children. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Cruising with friends, most likely to Europe. I also love Israel. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... To follow your heart.
“Holocaust by Bullets: 15 Years of Investigation” presents the results of extensive research throughout Eastern Europe. The research underscores that “Holocaust by Bullets” is a precursor and model for mass murder crimes today. The exhibit showcases the painstaking research by Yahad-In Unum, uncovering the step-by-step nature of the crimes committed against Jews and Roma by the mobile Nazi killing units. Most people don’t know this part of the Holocaust history and it is so important that we continue to educate ourselves about this and other genocides so that they never happen again. PHA (phxha.com) does tremendous work in our community throughout the year, honoring the legacies of the survivors through outreach, support, gatherings, and education programs.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… The Phoenix Holocaust Association (PHA). After moving to Arizona, I joined PHA, a unique, regional resource for Holocaust education and remembrance. PHA promotes human dignity by inspiring people to speak out and act against hate, bigotry, intolerance, and discrimination. As a child of Holocaust survivors and a representative of the organization, I give talks throughout the Phoenix area on Holocaust-related books and programs. e are a quarter of the way through 2022 and I can’t believe how quickly time flies. It seems like only yesterday that my dad was taking me shooting out in the desert which, back then, was 55th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak. Now that area has some of the most beautiful homes in the Valley. I remember hearing about a community that was going to be built out past 115th Avenue and Happy Valley Road so I drove out there to find nothing but a dirt road. Later though, that space turned out to be one of the largest communities in Peoria—Vistancia. Fast forward to today and we are still growing. It was recently announced that a developer from Texas just bought 5,261 acres that goes from the north edge of Vistancia all the way up to Carefree Highway. The name of this community is Saddleback Heights and, according to the city planner, it will be able to have over 8,000 homes, three golf courses, two parks, and two schools. This will be massive and will create a lot of needed housing for the Upper Westside. I will keep you updated on that community as news unfolds. How is the housing market currently in the Upper Westside? The answer is that we still have very few homes for sale and they are selling fast. Most homes that are priced well are receiving multiple offers and selling for more than they were listed for. So, if you’re a homeowner, your home’s value is continuing to go up daily. Is there any bad news? Well, besides the uncertainty in the world, the interest rates for mortgages have been going up. So far this hasn’t seemed to slow anything as a lot of buyers are more motivated to get something under contract before they go up even more. If interest rates continue to rise, we shall see at what point that slows things down. I believe it has to slow down the number of buyers, and in turn, that will slow the increase of
myhyperlocalnews.com
home values. I still don’t see a crash coming but I do see that slowdown in appreciation on its way. We have had double digit increases for so long and that can’t continue forever. Also, property taxes will be going up. I’ve been looking at the estimation of what is called Full Cash Value (FCV) from the Maricopa County Assessor for 2023 and I am seeing it anywhere from 24%-32%. To put that in perspective, the 2022 increase was mostly between 5%8% in 85383. So be ready for an increase coming soon. I hope I’m not causing any anxiety, but it is good to know what is coming and I believe the good far outweighs the bad. We still live in one of the most sought-after areas in the Valley. Celebrate 46 Years of Easter Fun in Peoria The Dolly Sanchez Easter Celebration will be Saturday, April 16 Photos Courtesy of the City of Peoria
T
he city of Peoria will be celebrating the 46th year of an annual Peoria tradition, the Dolly Sanchez Easter Celebration. The festivities will be from 8 a.m.-noon at the Peoria Sports Complex, located at 16101 N. 83rd Avenue. “This year’s celebration is a great way for Peoria families to have fun in a safe manner,” says Marylou Stephens, Peoria’s arts and events manager. “Be sure to stop by, eat, play and be ‘hoppy’ at the Dolly Sanchez Easter Celebration!” Families and kids of all ages can hop through Cottontail Lane, take a picture with Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny, visit the flower growing kit station, and collect eggs and goodies. There will be a variety of breakfast and snack food trucks, inflatable slides, a rock-climbing wall, Euro bungee, a photo booth, and a live band playing musical favorites from the 50s and 60s. The Dino Crew will also be making an appearance. In addition, the event will have a sensory room, which is a calming space for individuals with sensory processing needs. Noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, plush chairs, and soft toys are available to ensure all attendees can enjoy the celebration. Sensory kits will also be available to check out during the event. Just like the Teal Pumpkin Program signifies a safe food home or event during Halloween, Peoria will have teal eggs throughout the Dolly Sanchez Easter Celebration. For those families managing food allergies, children are encouraged to visit the booths with teal eggs or bags to get a variety of non-food items like toys and arts and crafts. This event is a Peoria tradition where families have gathered for 46 years, thanks to the Sanchez family. In 1976, Dolly Sanchez, who was a Peoria resident and member of the Peoria Community Action Program and Parks and Recreation Board, started a community Easter egg hunt. The city of Peoria became an official event partner with the Sanchez family in 1983, expanding the family Easter egg hunt from Varney Park to a city Easter event in seven neighborhood parks, to finally the Peoria Sports Complex in 1994. This event has become a community tradition attended by thousands of Peoria and Valley residents. The Sanchez family remains an integral part of the Easter celebration, helping plan the event and volunteering their time during the holiday festivities. READY, SET, CAMP! HOW TO SELECT THE BEST SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID By Jill “Mamabug” Frier
T
he summer months are coming and parents are looking for ways to keep their kids busy while they’re out of school. One solution is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your favorite camper. WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids can safely roam and play in a way they often aren’t allowed to in their own neighborhoods. And, even in a virtual environment, summer camp provides kids with entertainment, learning, and stimulation outside of their routine. Whether they’re at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, online camp, or overnight camp, children and teens can let loose and have fun with other youth outside of a school or home environment. Summer camps are a great way for your kids to have fun and stay active during the months they’re out of school, and they also teach them important life lessons, like how to make new friends and gain independence.
HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP FOR YOUR KID There are many options for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different STEM-related topics. There’s also camps focused on sports, theatre, art, and more. SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER Know Your Goal: Do you need ongoing care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child. Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets your child may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by allowing them to try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like.
options that you can make work to fit your budget. Look for nonprofit organizations, public parks and recreation venues, community centers and libraries, and online offerings for lower cost options for summer camp. Be Aware of Time Constraints and Locations: Summer camp can be a big help to working parents who need a place for their kids during the summer break, but note the drop off and pick up times to make sure they work with your schedule. Also be sure to plan around any known vacation or time off you have planned. Start the Search Now: The time to start doing homework for the right camp for your kid is now, before camp schedules get booked up and vacation time is planned. Do your research, read the fine print, talk to your child, and make sure that the camp or camps you pick work best for everyone in your family.
Know Your Budget: Summer camp can cost a lot of money. Be sure that you consider all the expenses involved, including equipment, meals, and extras. There are also a variety of

Health Heart Screening Fundraiser Supports PUSD Life-Saving Medical Equipment By Gretchen Pahia Photos Courtesy of the Anthony Bates Foundation
cases such as my son’s, the only symptom was sudden cardiac death, and it was just too late by that time.”
n the United States, thousands of children are diagnosed with heart problems each year. There are two main types of heart problems in children – congenital and acquired. One of the best ways to keep ahead of any lurking, undiagnosed heart issues is to do regular screening with electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram (ultrasound) testing. And for more than two decades, one Valley resident has been taking measures to ensure that no other children nor their families suffer from losses endured due to heart problems.
Symptoms of cardiac issues amongst kids that parents can watch out for include dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, fatigue, blacking out, palpitations or a racing heart. The problem is these symptoms are common among teenagers so medical treatment may not be immediately sought.
I
Local resident Sharon Bates knows the pain of pediatric heart issues all too well. Her only child, Anthony, died suddenly of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), also known as an enlarged heart. He was a seemingly healthy college athlete who’d gone under extensive physicals throughout most of his life, but his disease was never detected because EKGs are not required in youth physicals. In the more than twenty years since Anthony’s death, Sharon and her supporters have been on a mission to do everything they can to promote health and heart awareness through the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF). The foundation’s mission is to provide cardiac screenings for anyone ages 10 and up. “There is a huge gap in our medical system,” Sharon says. “Medical professionals chase symptoms but, like in Anthony’s case, we had no family history and saw no cardiac symptoms. Health insurance doesn’t cover heart exams for children unless there are symptoms and, in
That is where ABF comes in. “We provide comprehensive cardiac tests that include a two-page health history questionnaire, blood pressure checks, EKG and ultrasound, or echocardiogram,” Sharon says. “The screening tests are reviewed by cardiologists who volunteer their time to help.” APRIL 16 HEART SCREENING EVENT IN PEORIA To help the cause, ABF is hosting a special fundraiser this month at Sunrise Mountain High School, located at 21200 N. 83rd Avenue. Sharon and her team will be at the school on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. holding cardiac screening tests. Each test will include a blood pressure check, EKG/ECG, ultrasound/ echocardiograph, and will be physician-reviewed. The cost for the first 100 students who sign up for the screenings will be $40. After they hit that number, the cost will be $65 for students and $90 for adults. Anyone 10 and up is invited to participate. The funds raised during this event will provide Peoria Unified School District (PUSD) with Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to replace 53 AEDs that have
aged out. The costs for these AEDs average $1,200 each. Additionally, ABF has received grant funding to supplement their screening program and support the “Screening Hearts for AEDs in Schools” initiative. PUSD AED needs will be supported through the ABF funds received. Sharon says fundraisers such as these are very important for several reasons. “More than 13 percent of the attendees, so one in seven, will learn they have hidden heart issues. More astonishing is that a small percentage, about one in 42, will learn they have possibly life-threatening heart issues. So, we are literally saving lives.” Organizers of the event say they need volunteers to help make this all come together. They are looking for junior high through college-aged students and adults who can come help with “boots on the ground” work. They are also asking for medical students to sign up as medical volunteers, where an ECG/EKG certification course is offered. The value of this certification is over $350 and can help students with their future medical careers. Several volunteer shifts are available at AnthonyBates. org/volunteer. For anyone who would like to participate in this event, appointments are extremely encouraged and can be booked online at AnthonyBates.org.

W
est Valley nonprofit Benevilla is excited to announce their inaugural C.A.R.E.S. Program Partners Fair that will take place in-person on Wednesday, April 6 from 9 a.m.-noon. The event will be held outdoors on the Benevilla main campus, located at 16752 N. Greasewood Street in Surprise. This free information fair provides family caregivers and those looking
for help with their loved ones struggling with their independence at home with support, expert guidance, and valuable information to assist them with the challenges they may be facing. At this event, family caregivers can get their pressing questions answered. The Benevilla C.A.R.E.S. program consists of approximately 20 local senior services providers that are trusted partners of Benevilla. The expert advice and direction from the exhibitors range from senior living options and placement to hospice and home care choices, elder law, veterans’ benefits, ALTCS, real estate, geriatric care management, fiduciary services, estate planning and supervision, and more. There will be Benevilla programs information available as well highlighting their free support groups, home services, and C.A.R.E.S. (Community Assistance, Resources, Education and Support) Resource Department. The new Benevilla “Benefitness” Adaptive Gym scheduled to open in July will be open as well for a public preview.
“Benevilla is excited to have so many local senior services experts in one place at one time to support our aging population in the Northwest Valley,” says Benevilla President and CEO, Joanne Thomson. “Today, 30-60% of caregivers pass from illnesses related to caregiver stress before the person they are caring for. That’s why getting family caregivers this type of specialized support and information is crucial for our aging communities and their families.” More information on the fair and the expert partners who will be there can be found at benevilla.org/communityresources. Register for the event by calling Benevilla at 623-584-4999 or online at benevilla.org/benevilla-eventregistration. Started by the community and for the community in 1981, Benevilla is a not-for-profit family services agency dedicated to enriching the lives of West Valley residents by providing care services for older adults, adults with disabilities, children, and families.

RaeRae of Light Spreads Awareness of Life-Changing Congenital Heart Defects
Fundraiser for the local nonprofit takes place April 24 By Ava Hiniker Photo Courtesy of RaeRae of Light
A
ll around the globe, babies are born every day with severe congenital heart defects (CHDs) that crucially impact the lives of their entire families. With no identified causes and no known cures, these children are often forced to endure grueling hours in the hospital from the moment they are born. One local nonprofit strives to lessen the heavy burden placed on these families by providing awareness and funds for all who are impacted. Based in North Peoria, RaeRae of Light is a familyowned nonprofit organization that strives to raise awareness for children struggling with congenital heart defects. Through annual fundraisers, partnerships with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and prominent efforts to amplify patient stories, this organization marches forward to provide financial support for these families in need with everything from medical bills to house payments. Their second annual Hits for Hearts fundraiser takes place on April 24. Rae’s Hits for Hearts is a co-ed softball tournament allowing volunteers to visit Paloma
Community Park and show off their skills. For those who can’t participate in the tournament, they can still show their support by raising funds. To participate and learn more about this family-friendly fundraising event, visit raeraeoflight.org/hits-for-hearts. With first-hand knowledge of the physical and emotional tolls CHDs can have on entire households, founder Amy Norris strives to make the lives of each of these families a little bit easier. “I founded this organization in honor of my daughter, Reagan, who passed away from a congenital heart defect when she was six and a half months old,” says Norris. “While she was only with us for a short amount of time, she continues to make a huge difference in so many lives because this nonprofit wouldn’t exist without her. With every event we host, we want to be able to take those funds and use them directly to give back to families in need.” Recently, RaeRae of Light has been working with Arizona state congress members to produce a specialty license plate for congenital heart defects. Drivers can now obtain a specialty license plate to show their support for the cause. The funds to purchase the license plate will also be donated to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s heart center to finance valuable CHD research.
“We strive to help these hospitals and research programs get the funding they need so a cure for these awful defects can be found,” says Norris. “With the help of volunteers and community support, I will forever be an advocate until no other baby, child, or young adult has their life cut short because of a congenital heart defect.” To learn more about RaeRae of Light and the many ways to get involved, visit their website at raeraeoflight.org, their Facebook @RaeRaeofLight, and their Instagram @raeraeof_light.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
Mimi Cave shows some promise with her debut, giving the film a dreamlike sense through the lighting and camera work that calls back to old Giallo films of the 70s. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say in its favor—this film is another case of comedyhorror not balancing out. It’s hard to even call this a horror movie, as it is more of a psychological drama that occasionally has a freaky image. It’s hard to get invested in Lauryn Kahn’s script when you aren’t humored or scared, and it’s tougher with the two-dimensional characters that our usually talented cast are stuck with. It’s not a particularly interesting film, and the parallels between cannibalism and misogyny is odd and not clear. This really is a film that feels like two smashed into one with neither really turning out well.
the last few days of Yang’s life, finding out more about him, and the family’s reactions. The film touches on the melancholic discovery about who the person you thought you knew really was and the highs and lows of remembering them. It’s not overly somber, still having that feeling of love and care even in the face of doom, aided by the film’s visuals (which includes the rare aspect ratio changes that work and fit). Justin H. Min particularly stands out here as the titular android and his silent pain of wanting to connect with the outside world. It’s a shame to see A24 dump this, as it is one of their best in a while.

all over the movie, killing any form of sincerity or emotional qualities. Several actors in the film are barely used; they are less characters and more objects to advance the story. Levy’s directing is fine, an improvement from “Free Guy” but still far from the craftsmanship of “Real Steel” and “Night At The Museum.” It also features some of the worst needle drops from a recent film. By the end, you feel about it the same way as other Netflix blockbusters: dull, unimpressive but not terrible, and you forget about it quickly.

This is likely to be a movie that appeals primarily to fans of the band. If you’re unfamiliar with their music, you’ll not really get much out of it. There is some surprising gore here, and BJ McDonnell is a capable horror director with the set pieces. Unfortunately, it’s a film that can’t balance the horror with the humor, and the band members are awful actors. Perhaps you can argue that the film is intentionally trying to be silly and dumb, but that can only get you so far if your audience is not there for the band. One must still remember to make a movie that still works on its own.

“The Adam Project” A young boy meets his future self to save the future from the dangers of time travel. The idea for the latest collaboration between Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds is a good one. The film shines particularly in a few quiet scenes that remind us of the feelings of wanting to go back and fix what you did when you were younger. Unfortunately, the latter’s self-aware style from many of his recent films bleeds

Las Palomas BEACH & GOLF RESORT

D
uring the hot, dry summer, Arizonans crave sea breezes, cool ocean water, relaxation and activities that will keep the whole family active and entertained. While seaside resorts aren’t part of our desert landscape, Puerto Peñasco (commonly referred to as Rocky Point), is often considered “Arizona’s beach” due to its proximity to our border and its popularity as a vacation destination for desert dwellers. Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort, located in the exclusive Sandy Beach area of Rocky Point, features more than 800 contemporary condos perfect for families, friends and couples looking for a beach getaway just hours away from Phoenix.
Luxury condominiums range from one to four bedrooms, each with its own terrace or balcony to take in the breathtaking views and can sleep up to 10 people. Las Palomas was the first resort in Rocky Point to receive a four-diamond rating from AAA. It has also been recognized with a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice award for two years in a row, placing it in the top 10 percent of hotels worldwide. It’s located just 10 minutes from Old Port and downtown — where you’ll find restaurants, bars, and shops — and popular Rocky Point watering holes and attractions with live music on the beach. Jacques Cousteau once called Mexico’s Sea of Cortéz “the world’s aquarium.” Set against the sea, and its beautiful beaches, Las Palomas is an ideal locale for exploring or simply taking in the views. Those looking for an active vacation can enjoy Las Palomas as their home base for deep sea fishing, snorkeling, parasailing, or kayaking in the Sea of Cortéz, or hiking or cycling in the surrounding areas. Even if you choose to stay on the secured grounds of the resort, there are plenty of activities to enjoy for every member of the family. 38 • April 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER
You can pack light for a road trip to Las Palomas – bathing suits and flip flops are all you need during the day, when you can drift on the property’s lazy river, take a trip down the water slide, or lounge in a gorgeous negative-edge pool, taking in the spectacular views and enjoying a cocktail from one of the swim-up bars. Or stroll over to the full-service spa to indulge in a massage, facial or body treatment. Bring workout wear if you want to participate in activities like Zumba, Aquaerobics, or stretching, or to exercise in the fitness center. If golf is more your speed, Las Palomas is home to The Links, the only true links golf course on Sandy Beach. Open to the public, it is a professional 18-hole, par-72 course that hosts several events throughout the year and attracts world class professional and amateur players, such as the resort’s annual anniversary golf tournament to be held May 13-15. If you’re looking for world-class cuisine, Las Palomas is the home of one of the finest restaurants in Rocky Point, La Maria Bistro & Fine Cuisine, featuring Mexican and world fusion in a beautiful seaside setting. Or enjoy gourmet options from Citron Fine Cuisine, Las Palomas’ French themed full-service restaurant. Both venues feature charming bars that are perfect gathering spots for enjoying fine wine, cervezas, margaritas or sophisticated cocktails. There’s always something happening at Las Palomas, whether a gastronomy class, a beer or wine tasting, or a holiday celebration. You can make a vacation to Rocky Point as adventurous or as laid-back as you want it to be – and even change it up from day to day. Rooms greater in size or using upgraded flooring will add additional monthly costs. Does not include stairs or rip up.
