Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power

L

eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies.

Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics.

It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large.

The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution.

Arizonans can certainly relate.

Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021.

“Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.”

The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain.

Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off.

Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for

Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources.

Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. Our government could do a lot to counteract these headwinds, but until the political climate changes, any national effort to stop the Earth’s climate from changing is merely hypothetical.

Senator Luján said he believes there is a path forward for federal legislation and that it runs through state-level action. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan.

Planning for Stadium Point at P83 Continues to Move Ahead

“After years of visioning and public investment efforts seeking to transform the area around the Peoria Sports Complex into a vibrant, pedestrian-focused, destination dubbed P83 (‘Peoria 83rd Avenue’), the city is seeing continued traction,” according to the Peoria Planning Department. “Now, the city of Peoria is working with American Life, Inc. on an exciting and transformative new project called Stadium Point that proposes the re-development of a 17-acre surface parking lot at the southeast corner of 83rd Avenue and Stadium Way into a complementary, mixed-use project, centered around a public activity plaza.”

The Stadium Point project is planned to have over 500,000 square feet of Class A office space, a business class hotel, a multifamily residential building, meeting spaces, retail stores, chef-driven and specialty restaurants, along with structured parking to support these new buildings.

The hotel at Stadium Point is planned to have up to 150 rooms and will offer many amenities, including a restaurant, and rooftop bar. The multi-family residential building will have 350 units and offer amenities like a pool deck, roof terraces and a club room, and all the retail spaces will be located on the ground level to ensure a lot of traffic around the large plaza. “Altogether, Stadium Point will create a flagship that advances the identity of the P83 District into an area characterized by high-quality urban development,” cites the Peoria Planning Department.

However, over 20 months has passed since the announcement of the project, and the city is still in the planning phase

and has yet to break ground. “Currently, it’s going through a major planned area development,” says Kristina Perez, Peoria’s Marketing and Communications Manager.

Part of this planned area development includes two requests. The first was a request to increase the maximum allowable height on one of the buildings from 10 stories to 15 stories, or 240 feet, whichever is less. The second request was asking to create an enhanced sign program for the project to include digital display signs, py-

lon signs and murals wrapping the parking structures. A series of neighborhood meetings to garner public input will be scheduled before the amendment moves forward to the Planning and Zoning Commission and city council for action, according to the city.

Just 10 years later, that number jumped all the way up to 190,985, and now in 2022, it is estimated that over 200,000 residents call Peoria home. With the continuing rise in people relocating to Peoria comes the need for an uptick in easily accessible health care facilities. To meet the demand, two new medical buildings are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022—Reunion Rehab Hospital and the Desert Harbor Medical Commons. In addition, HonorHealth also recently announced plans for a new medical facility.

REUNION REHAB HOSPITAL Reunion Rehab Hospitals, a chain of rehabilitation facilities that has locations in Colorado, Ohio, and Texas, have announced that they will open their second Arizona location in Peoria. The company opened their first Arizona location in Downtown Phoenix in January.

“Reunion Rehab Hospital will be a three-story facility with more than 40,000 square feet and 40 patient beds,” Peoria Economic Development Project Manager Susana Trasente says.

Irgens, a real estate developer of commercial offices, healthcare buildings, mixed-use and manufacturing properties, is heading the project. On Dec. 9, 2021, it was announced that the company broke ground in Peoria.

Thunderbird Road, this new building is positioned within a nine-mile radius of Banner Boswell Hospital, Banner Thunderbird Hospital, Abrazo Arrowhead Hospital, and St. Joseph’s Westgate Hospital. It is also just minutes away from the P83 Entertainment District as well as State Farm Stadium. Trasente confirms that Desert Harbor Medical Commons is due to open by the end of the year.

HONORHEALTH PURCHASES LAND FOR MEDICAL CAMPUS IN PEORIA The Peoria City Council voted on Tuesday, Feb. 15, to approve HonorHealth purchasing a parcel of land in Peoria. This real estate purchase agreement between the city of Peoria and HonorHealth calls for the $3.43 million purchase of 7.51 acres with plans to develop a 75,000-square-foot HonorHealth ambulatory medical campus. The 7.51 acres of land is located between 83rd Avenue and the Loop 101 freeway, north of the alignment of Banff Lane and south of Skunk Creek. At this time, HonorHealth has not finalized a timeline or specific services that will be offered at this location.

Peoria Partners with SRP for the “Right Tree, Right Place” Program THE CITY OF PEORIA AND SALT RIVER PROJECT (SRP) ARE PARTNERING FOR THE RIGHT TREE, RIGHT PLACE PROGRAM. By next month, 166 trees that pose a risk to electric lines and service reliability in Peoria will be removed. To offset these removals, 500 trees will be planted over the next few months, expanding the city’s shade canopy and wildlife habitats, which reduces the urban heat island effect.

“Trees enhance the overall well-being, livability, and character of communities,” says Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Trees also provide increased shade – a critical component in our beautiful and bright Sonoran Desert. The addition of 500 trees, thoughtfully placed in our city, is a tremendous addition to Peoria and we are pleased to partner with SRP as we work to elevate our community.”

SRP developed the Right Tree, Right Place program to work with municipal partners, like the city of Peoria, to remove encroaching trees and then either replant or replace them in city parks, neighborhoods or schools located near removal areas. Trees are replaced in multiples so that there is a net increase in the tree canopy. In turn, it reduces the heat island effect, sequesters CO2 and

other air pollutants, improves aesthetics, maintains electric reliability, ensures public safety, and reduces SRP’s longterm vegetation management costs.

Additionally, this program ensures that the city is “improving thermal comfort in Peoria through such means as trees, other vegetation, and structures,” as outlined in the Peoria Pedestrian and Shade Master Plan.

“We are excited to partner with SRP to ensure that the right tree is in the right place and that the effort aligns with Peoria’s community forestry partnerships,” says Ryan McCartney, Peoria’s arborist. “The city locations were selected to maximize the health and wellness benefits trees can provide for Peoria residents. We meticulously selected tree species that are ideal for creating shade canopies in parks for residents to enjoy for years to come.”

Super Bowl LVII Host Committee Launches Countdown to 2023 Game in the Valley

IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018.

Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show.

It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.”

The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only

starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude.

The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events.

“Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona.

This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.”

Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars.

The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The 2015 game brought in 120,000 visitors

“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”

“The Business Connect program supports minority-owned businesses, womenowned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.”

The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape.

Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls.

With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft.

“When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.”

It takes a village to host a Super Bowl, and if the track record of this committee is any indication of what’s to come, Super Bowl LVII will be a well-oiled machine.

hile many of us have an idea of how we believe auctions work, we may only be familiar with the concept from portrayals in media— which may or may not be accurate. To change this, Erik Hoyer, CEO of EJ’S Auction & Appraisal, is on a mission to make auctions more mainstream and accessible to the average consumer.

While it has a brick-and-mortar location in the West Valley, its auctions are online—making it accessible to shoppers across the Valley and beyond.

Hoyer explains that he originally worked for construction companies, which exposed him to the world of auctions in the 2007-2008 economic crisis. “Auctions used to have this stereotype about seeming like an ‘underworld economy,’ and because of that, I saw a niche that needed to be filled,” Hoyer says. “My whole idea was to bring auctions to the forefront of the average consumer’s retail

experience. Give them [auctions] more of a ‘big box’ type feel—make them clean, welcoming, and not intimidating. I believe that’s what we have done with EJ’S Auction & Appraisal.”

If business growth is any indication that Hoyer was correct about filling a niche, then the proof is in the fact that, in 2013, EJ’s had only three employees—today, it has nearly 30 full-time employees and counting. This includes five full-time appraisers.

“Before the pandemic, our in-person

auctions were definitely hectic and busy, but now, while customers can see products in-person at our auction house, all auctions are online only,” Hoyer explains. “We are fortunate and grateful to say that we actually grew during the pandemic; I think it was because everyone was home and able to learn more about auctions and participate, too.”

HOW THE AUCTION PROCESS WORKS At EJ’s, the auction process is made to be as simple and approachable as possible.

art, antiques, jewelry, furniture, firearms, and more. They average 150 auctions a year, with most happening virtually on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.

EJ’s auctions have three different categories, or “rings” of items during their Saturday morning auctions: • The choice ring features luxury items and collectibles.

• The bid ring features household goods and similar items.

• The crate ring features boxes of a variety of items all packaged together.

All the items are listed online before the auctions. Nervous about bidding on items that you haven’t seen in person?

No problem, as each week, on Thursdays and Fridays, bidders can see the items at EJ’s warehouse from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day.

With his goal of making auctions more mainstream in mind, the EJ’s facility is welcoming, indoors and includes 29,000 square feet of auction and display space.

There is also ample parking and food and beverages available at nearby stores and restaurants.

All online auctions are available to the public and EJ’s website, ejsauction.com, includes easy-to-follow directions on how to join in the live virtual auctions.

EJ’s even has an easy-to-navigate app as well.

Once a patron has successfully purchased their item in the online auction, they can then pick their items up on Sundays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the facility.

“Auction bidding is not something to be afraid of,” according to EJ’s tips for first-time buyers. “You will not buy accidentally by scratching your nose; the auctioneer knows when you are bidding seriously. On the other hand, don’t wait too long if you want an item – get your bid in early so the auctioneer has the bid before the item is sold.”

Hoyer adds that he recommends buyers see the items they want to bid on during a preview day.

The Local Real Estate Market Continues to Be Strong This Spring

he year’s real estate market has started off strong. With threats of higher interest rates, buyers don’t want to wait, and with what seems like 20 buyers for every listing, the home prices are still getting bid up.

If buyers are thinking of waiting, they risk not only higher interest rates but higher prices. The inventory in the Valley remains extremely low—even in 85383.

In October we were averaging about 140 active homes, and we are now in the low 50s in our home zip code.

What’s the takeaway? If you know anyone looking to buy, tell them to get busy and don’t lose heart. It will probably take a couple of offers or more to get one under contract, so we really try and

prepare our buyers to be emotionally ready. I’ve heard stories of buyers getting frustrated and just deciding to rent for a year and wait for it to slow down.

They are potentially (very probable at this moment) missing out on a year of increased equity, low interest rates, and rents are so high right now that they are probably spending at least $20,000 for the year on rent.

If you are already a homeowner, then you are in a great financial position right now.

Equity has been increasing every month with no slowdown in sight.

This year, the Regional Skills Competition was cancelled so Peoria Unified CTE Department re-created its own challenge for students from multiple high schools. While the competi-

tion was close, Centennial High School won the “Best Peoria Unified CTE Construction Program 2022” award.

DVUSD’s Elementary #32 has a New Name, Mascot and School Colors T he Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) Governing Board has approved the name “Inspiration Mountain School” with the mascot of a Knight and colors of Royal Blue and Black for the Elementary #32 school currently under construction at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

This recommendation comes following an initial survey that was open to the DVUSD community from December 15, 2021 to January 5, 2022 to collect ideas for its name, mascot, and colors. All suggestions from this survey were carefully reviewed during a school naming community meeting, which was attended by future Inspiration Mountain School students, families, community members, and potential staff members. The group gave input on the suggestions and narrowed the list of ideas.

The community then had the opportunity to select their favorite options in a final

voting survey. DVUSD received more than 800 votes from future students, families, staff, and community members.

The DVUSD Governing Board approved the name, mascot, and colors at a recent meeting.

Dr. JoAnn Schwarting was named as the principal for Inspiration Mountain School. After serving four years in the United States Navy, Dr. Schwarting earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University (ASU), a Master of Arts in Educational Administration and Supervision from Northern Arizona University, and a Doctorate in Education Leadership and Innovation from ASU. The current DVUSD Principal of the Year, Dr. Schwarting has served the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2005. She taught seventh grade English language arts at Desert Mountain School for seven years. She then transferred to Desert Sky Middle School where she assumed the roles of instructional coach and assistant princi-

pal. Most recently, Dr. Schwarting spent the last six years leading Desert Mountain School as principal.

Though it is bittersweet leaving her current school, Dr. Schwarting is up for the challenge and eager for the opportunity.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be given the honor of serving this beautiful community. My goal is to nurture a school environment that is caring and connected,” she says. “I believe partnerships are necessary when educating our students, so I’m looking forward to developing strong family and community ties.”

Making a House a Home: Local High School Students Give Back

S

tudents from West-MEC’s General Construction Technology program in Deer Valley are helping to renovate a veteran’s widow’s home in Glendale as part of their work-based learning and community service.

LaGean Levar is the wife of Thomas Phillip Levar, a Navy veteran who passed away nearly a year ago.

Levar’s house was in disrepair and needed immediate attention. The city of Glendale contacted Glendale police officer Sgt. Jeff Turney due to his previous service to veterans to brainstorm ways to help. “The house was going to be condemned due to its condition and I contacted Angels on Patrol and Operation Enduring Gratitude. They stepped in to help Ms. Levar and renovate the house,” Sgt. Turney says.

Operation Enduring Gratitude, a nonprofit started

by West-MEC’s General Construction Technology instructor and veteran Charlie Ellis, serves veterans and families in need. The nonprofit undertook renovations to make Levar’s house a home again. To help, students from West-MEC’s construction class went to the site and put the skills they learned in their program to good use. They filled in cracks, replaced windows, performed

repairs on cracked masonry joints, and more. Avanti Windows and AZ Masonry Council guided students in the process.

Ximena Navarro, a student of the program, says, “It feels great to use the skills that I’ve learned in class while also giving back to the community.”

“The class is here to make a tangible difference while seeing real-life application of techniques learned in the lab,” Ellis says. “They will be coming back a few more times to help in the restoration process.”

“I’d like to thank the students, Operation Enduring Gratitude, and others who have helped in the restoration process,” Levar says.

The full restoration is anticipated to be completed this spring.

Family Built for Fun in the North Valley The New Bricks & Minifigs Welcomes Local LEGO Fans

L

EGO is a family affair for the Blaz family. Longtime fans of the construction toys, Allen and Kat Blaz decided to turn their family’s LEGO hobby into a North Phoenix business, Bricks & Minifigs.

They were initially introduced to the franchise while visiting Kat’s brother in Albuquerque. “He took us to a Bricks & Minifigs for the first time and we thought it was a really cool concept,” she says. “At the time, we never thought we’d own one.”

Founded in 2009, Bricks & Minifigs is a buy, sell, trade model exclusively devoted to all things LEGO, including bulk bricks and other accessories. The minifigs in the name refers to the collectible, poseable mini-figure characters that come in sets or as individual pieces.

When they returned home to Arizona, Allen found out there was a Bricks & Minifigs in Avondale. He’d regularly make the long drive out to the store with their kids, Alec and Evie, to scope out the offerings.

“Out of the blue, Allen came to me last February and broached the idea of opening up a North Phoenix Bricks & Minifigs.” says Kat. “I’ve always liked the idea of owning a business. As a horse trainer previously, being my own boss and working for everything I make appeals to me. So I said, ‘Let’s do it.”

As a mom, Kat also saw the potential of opening up a kid-friendly store in a community she adores. “North Phoenix is really growing. There aren’t a lot of kid-type stores around here, yet there are a ton of families living here,” she says.

Another thing she liked about the idea: the LEGO industry is thriving, despite the pandemic. “LEGO became something more important for families to do together and to get kids off their iPads. I also like that it’s been a toy that’s been around for decades and has really stood the test of time.”

Allen, in business intelligence for Zelle, the peer-to-peer payment app, had been doing research on the concept for months prior to speaking with Kat. As soon as she gave the okay, he secured financing to get the ball rolling.

Bringing the store to fruition proved more of a challenge.

The original plan was to open the store in August of last year, but between the city being short staffed, the cost of the build doubling in three months, and supply chain issues, the project was delayed. The extra time gave the couple time to thoughtfully plan out the store as well as build up their inventory.

“The biggest thing with Bricks & Minifigs is that it’s your one-stop shop for everything LEGO. There are no other stores around where you can find LEGO new in a box, you can find used sets, you can find minifigs by themselves, or you can buy pieces from our bulk

area if you have a set and you’re missing a few pieces to complete it. We also have an area where you can build your own minifigs, which is really popular,” she says. “We also buy and trade your old LEGO. If you have an old set that you want to get rid of, bring in the set, and we’ll give you cash or trade-in value so that you can walk out with a new-to-you set.”

What’s truly unique about each Bricks & Minifigs store is the variety between locations. “All the used sets are what we’ve gotten from our community, so each store has different cool show pieces. We call them relics,” says Kat. The North Phoenix store’s relic is a custom Iron Man Hall of Armor, which has every single Iron Man marked minifig. Its value is close to $3,000.

While that seems like a hefty price tag for a kid’s toy, Allen points out that LEGO isn’t just for youth. “There are popular groups called AFOL (Adult Fans of Lego) and LUG (Lego User Groups) that have tremendous followings. There’s even a show called ‘LEGO Masters,’ where LEGO enthusiasts of all ages participate in a series of competitions that begin with a single LEGO brick and concludes with inspiring, complex construction.

On Sundays, when normally closed, the store can be reserved for birthdays or private events. Eventually the store will also offer camps. The pair also plan on working with schools to support S. T. E. A. M. initiatives and LEGO clubs where children can use LEGO to continue learning and bolstering creativity. They’re also looking forward to working with nonprofits that have the same community values the couple holds dear.

“This is not only for the love of LEGO, but also about becoming pillars in our community,” says Kat. “We love this area, and we want to give back. It’s not just about opening a store and making money. For us, it’s about being an integral part of the community.”

TAKE THE TRIP FAMILY TRAVEL HACKS JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING BREAK

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee.

Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road.

USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide.

The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring.

GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied

ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free.

CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past.

PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love

writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills.

BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle.

I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids.

GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips.

REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free.

OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but

I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!).

PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed.

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on.

It’s important to instill in your kids a love for travel, exploration, and adventure— memories over monetary for the win.

he ninth annual Hike for Hope, Rocking through Grief, benefiting Billy’s Place will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 8 a.m. It will start and finish at Copper Hills Church near

Sunrise Mountain, located at 27035 N. Black Rock Road in Peoria.

The hike is a family-friendly event, open to participants of all ages, and pets are welcome. It features therapy animals, music, raffles, activities, food, and fun

to make for a memorable event. All hikers will start at the registration table anytime between 8 and 10 a.m. and then move through the activities and the selfguided hike with their group at their own pace. The closing ceremonies and raffle winners will be announced in-person to conclude the event at 11 a.m.

IN THEATERS

“Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.”

“Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic 32 • March 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.

“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”

has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.
