he Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) marks the 18th anniversary of the Giving Closet, a district-wide resource providing formal attire to students in need, with the story tracing back to the efforts of Ann Elizabeth Ordway before she joined the DVUSD Board.
Curtis Finch explored partnerships with Grand Canyon University’s CityServ program, which repurposes surplus goods from major retailers. Despite initial challenges in finding a local church to manage the distribution, the district eventually partnered with Callahan Cares, establishing a student and family pantry at Deer Valley Middle School, located at 21100 N. 27th Ave., in Phoenix, is adjacent to BGHS.
Ordway, now in her 16th year as a DVUSD Governing Board member, began by collecting gowns, suits, and accessories for significant student events out of her garage, using her vehicle for distribution. Her commitment laid the foundation for what would become a beacon of community support.
The latest addition to the initiative, Ann E’s Closet, honors Ordway’s sustained dedication. Chasse Builders of Phoenix donated significant resources to the project, including cabinetry and shelving. The DVUSD Print Shop also contributed with signage. The official reveal of the closet’s name was revealed January 25.
The Giving Closet evolved from a garage operation to a designated space in Barry Goldwater High School (BGHS), eventually expanding to occupy a large area on the school’s mezzanine. The desire to transform the Giving Closet into a personalized shopping experience, complete with dressing rooms and an array of clothing options, was brought to fruition through collaboration with BGHS staff and the support of local construction firms Toll Brothers and Young Brothers, facilitated by Phoenix Police Resource Officer Valarie Rhodes.
While operational hours for Ann E’s Closet are still in development, oncampus students at BGHS/DVMS will have access during school hours, overseen by school personnel familiar with the new checkout system. This system, connected to Callahan Cares, will ensure the Giving Closet is restocked biweekly.

Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography
T
his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.
MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE
1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes. • With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.
2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently. 3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water. • Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.
4. Observing the Colors Separate • As the water travels up the paper, it will carry the ink from the markers with it. 6. wo bustling Japanese and Chinese fusion restaurants in North Phoenix are beloved for much more than their handmade rolls and Cantonese wok cooking. “We’ve brought our culture to Arizona from Canton, China, where my grandma used to cook banquets for the whole village,” co-owner Kelly Yu says. “Those family recipes were passed down from my Grandma and Grandpa Deng.” After working 10 years in the restaurant industry and 16 • February 2024 • UPPER WESTSIDER
managing a restaurant in Scottsdale, in 2014, Yu and her aunt Lisa launched Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine on 67th Avenue and Happy Valley Road in Glendale to help make her aunt’s dream a reality. In 2018, they expanded to 83rd Avenue and Deer Valley Road in Peoria. Yu became the “face of the Kawaii franchise,” handling all its business operations and community relations. In Japanese, “kawaii” means cute, reflecting the warm and inviting atmosphere they strive to create. From family roots to a diverse menu and full bar, the restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it’s where people come to create a sense of community.
“We have three in one — sushi, a Chinese kitchen, and a full bar,” says Yu, adding that it’s unique for an Asian restaurant to have all three. “There would be a line out the door, whether it was hot or cold weather,” she says. Despite its success, Kawaii Sushi and Asian Cuisine faced problems like most restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We wanted to protect our family,” explains Yu. “Grandma is almost 90 years old, so the Glendale location was open for dine-in and Peoria for takeout only.” myhyperlocalnews.com
The pandemic break and slow return to indoor service in 2021-22 allowed Kawaii Peoria to renovate by relocating the bar to the front of the restaurant and adding more chairs around its new L-shape — a change of paint and different décor rounded out the updates. Another change during this time included Yu transferring to the Kawaii Peoria location to focus on its success. That’s when she added her grandpa’s last name, Deng, to the Chinese fan in the logo to honor her family’s heritage. Yu says Kawaii Peoria’s regulars love the fresh layout, and first-time guests are welcomed by the lively conversations at the bar now that it’s close to the entrance. “It’s like a new community, and Kawaii Peoria aids it,” Yu says. For Yu, the Kawaii Peoria community welcomes her in return. “The community, the people, make me feel like a part of the neighborhood,” she says. “I’m grateful for the loyalty and support of the residents. When people come to Kawaii Peoria, they are not just customers but part of our family.” Yu conveys the love and camaraderie that make Kawaii Peoria feel welcoming for many with her touching anecdote of patrons who recently drove across the Valley to visit the restaurant. She explains, “I hugged them for driving to my restaurant from across town.” Yu’s tradition is to drink a shot with another regular customer. The delight among Yu and her customers extends to employees as well. One of the unique aspects of Kawaii Peoria is its commitment to hiring and training young workers. “Young people are highly trainable and bring a fresh perspective to the restaurant industry,” says Yu, adding that it allows Kawaii Peoria to give back to the community. Yu supports many charitable causes, such as hosting regular restaurant nights for nearby high schools and sports teams and fundraisers for area churches, the Peoria Police Citizens’ Academy, and more. She says her community involvement was passed down from her grandparents, who shared the family recipes with their village in Canton. Today, Grandma and Grandpa Deng’s recipes significantly shape Yu’s menu at Kawaii Peoria. Kawaii Peoria offers something for everyone. The Canton-style Chinese selections include classic dishes like Wonton Soup, Orange Chicken, Walnut Shrimp, Shui-Zhu Beef, Chicken Fried Rice, and Beef Chow Fun. All menu options can be modified from mild to spicy, such as how Yu’s fiancé, Aldo, likes it. Regulars know to ask for “Aldo-style” if they want spicy meals. The sushi menu is just as diverse, including Blue Point oysters, poke tuna salad, baked green mussels, spicy tuna jalapeño poppers, Kawaii Love Boat, various sashimi and nigiri, along with an expansive selection of house specialty rolls created from scratch like the fan favorites Diablo tower, Samurai roll, Tsukiji roll, Lucky Crab roll, and Cha Cha roll. Yu says she’s adding more tofu options for vegetarians, no-rice selections for low-carb diners, and gluten-free choices. Yu says Ramen noodle soup, a good lunch choice, will be available soon, too. The full bar features a refined wine list, various sake, and beers from Japan and Asia. Happy hour is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day, including daily specials like Mai Tai Mondays and Sake Tuesdays. You can meet Kelly Yu at Kawaii Peoria on 8385 W. Deer Valley Rd. She’ll also be on hand for the restaurant’s 10-year anniversary on April 20. Follow Instagram (@kawaiipeoria) and Facebook (@KawaiiPeoria) to learn about upcoming events and specials, such as the Chinese New Year (February 10) menu and their $20 for $40 worth of Chinese cuisine deal on localflavor.com. From family legacy to a diverse menu and full bar, it’s more than just a place to eat — it’s where people come together to create a sense of community — including hugs and shots. Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… taking care of over 175 rescue pigs, which include pot belly pigs and farm hogs. Our sanctuary is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and education of pig ownership in Arizona. Our amazing volunteers and I ensure they have plenty of food, poop picked up, shelters cleaned, and medical needs assessed. MY FAMILY IS… the amazing rescue pigs that call Better Piggies home. We have small and large pigs, plus three rescue cows. Additionally, I’m happy to call our volunteers a part of the family because they love and care for the rescues like their own. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… plenty of piggy treats like fruits and veggies, Oreos, and Cheerios. We work with the local food bank and various donors to provide the best possible meals and treats to the pigs. HI, MY NAME IS… Danielle Betterman, director of Better Piggies Rescue. I’VE LIVED IN THE VALLEY FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE (I’M AN ARIZONA NATIVE) AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… the weather is perfect, even when it’s hot. We have the best wildlife, and our sunsets are amazing!
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Babe.” It’s a crowd favorite around here. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an animal rescuer, just like my father. Based on his teachings, I was able to fulfill that dream.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. I hope that everyone is seeing a theme here.
with the rescue or their extended care. This isn’t a life for everyone but I’m happy to share it in any capacity people request.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my amazing friend and loyal volunteer Beth. She is kind and loving but also helps with feeding and numerous pig rescues. I would be nowhere without my friends/volunteers. They are the best extended family I and the piggies could ask for.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my first ever pig, Beezers. He was a Christmas gift 12 years ago, he is the reason for the rescue, and he is my best friend and the love of my life.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… anything the pigs are doing which goes right on our TikTok page (@betterpiggies). We want everyone to see how amazingly nerdy these pigs are and how much smarter they are than other animals.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… vacation? What is a vacation? You can’t go on vacation with 175-plus pigs that you have to take care of daily. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Whenever you feel sad or lonely and need a friend, just cuddle up to a rescue pig. You will have a friend and cuddle buddy for life.”
THE PERFECT DAY IS… sitting at the sanctuary, hanging with the pigs, knowing they are happy, healthy, and free from harm. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Better Piggies Rescue and to find out more about tours or volunteering, please visit our website at betterpiggiesrescue. org MY LIFE IS… hard but rewarding. Posh Pup Palaces: 10th Annual Design for Dogs Event Aids Arizona’s Homeless Animals Photos courtesy of Arizona Animal Welfare League
T
he Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) teams up with local architects, interior designers, and home builders for the 10th annual Design for Dogs event on Friday, Feb. 23. This unique fundraiser will feature swanky, custom-built doghouses to support AAWL’s mission in rescuing and caring for homeless pets.
This year’s event is a special one, bringing together 10 “All Star” teams that have participated in previous Design for Dogs events. They are set to design, build, and donate luxurious doghouses, which will be auctioned off during the event. The highlight of the evening will be the “Best in Show” competition, where these pet palaces will be judged for their creativity and functionality.
The money raised through this event is crucial for AAWL, Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, which supports over 4,000 homeless pets annually. The proceeds will directly fund life-saving programs, including low-cost vaccine clinics, rural rescue efforts, and a community vet clinic. The event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., will offer more than just an auction. Attendees can enjoy music, raffle prizes, and the chance to meet adorable, adoptable dogs from AAWL. Each ticket holder will receive a ticket redeemable for two drinks, provided by local vendors. Founded in 1971 by a group of animal lovers, including Amanda Blake of “Gunsmoke” fame, AAWL has evolved
from a small-scale operation into a full-service animal welfare organization. Over the past 50 years, AAWL has been a leader in innovative behavior training, medical care, adoption, and community outreach programs, especially focusing on rescuing animals from rural shelters in Arizona. Held at the Facings of America Showroom, located at 16421 N. 90th St., in Scottsdale, tickets for this caninecentric architectural showcase are priced at $55 for general admission and can be purchased at designfordogs. org. Greystar Launches Marlowe Peoria Place Rendering courtesy of Greystar Real Estate Partners
G
reystar Real Estate Partners, LLC (“Greystar”), a global real estate company, announced the groundbreaking of Marlowe Peoria Place in January. This new venture marks the latest addition to Marlowe-branded apartment communities and forms a significant part of the comprehensive Peoria Place master plan. Strategically positioned west of Grand Avenue and south of Monroe Street, Marlowe Peoria Place is poised to be a cornerstone in the Peoria Place project, which envisions more than 700 apartments, 255 build-for-rent homes, and a significant amount of logistics space. “Marlowe Peoria Place is an important piece in the overall Peoria Place master plan,” says Billy Cundiff, managing director of development at Greystar. He highlights the project’s significance, saying, “Marlowe

Peoria Place will highlight the entrance to Old Town Peoria with a public art piece and bring 4,900 square feet of retail space that will serve as an amenity to the entire area. This project is truly a partnership between the city and Greystar to get the master plan off the ground.” Peoria Deputy City Manager Mike Faust underscored the project’s role in the city’s growth. “In Peoria, we realize that a diverse housing portfolio is key to attracting new business,” says Faust. “Peoria Place is a wonderful addition to the community, bringing new retail businesses and a connection to our P83 Entertainment District with easy access to the 101.” Marlowe Peoria Place, as the first conventional multifamily community within the master plan, features a three-story design with 370 apartment homes. These homes, offering one- and two-bedroom floorplans, range from 650 to 1,180 square feet. The community aims to blend comfort with luxury,
boasting interiors with quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, two color schemes, and a host of community amenities. These include a 1,200 square foot fitness center, pickleball court, two dog parks, coworking space, and a pool with cabanas and a spa. The architecture, inspired by Spanish desert styles, will resonate throughout the master plan.
Adjacent to the city of Peoria municipal offices, the Peoria Place master plan is set to enrich the Old Town area with restaurants, retail, and lifestyle-related businesses, complementing the city’s vibrant events. Its proximity to Pioneer Community Park, the Westgate entertainment district, State Farm Stadium, and the Peoria Sports Complex underscores its strategic location. This ambitious project is backed by equity partners Link Capital Partners and BCI Asset Management. Homebuyers and Sellers Benefit from Lower Interest Rates in 85383
By Frank May, Real Estate Agent
T
he start of the year brings encouraging news for the 85383 real estate market. Homeowners in the area have witnessed a significant increase in average property values, with a year-over-year rise of $51,118. This trend is favorable for both homeowners, who enjoy seeing their property’s value grow, and buyers, who benefit from immediate equity growth upon purchasing. A notable shift in interest rates has also contributed to this positive market dynamic. Rates have decreased by approximately 1.5% compared to a few months ago, easing the transition for buyers and sellers alike. Previously, sellers were reluctant to relinquish low-interest rate mortgages for rates nearing 8%. However, with current rates hovering around 6%, making a move has become more feasible for those wishing to change their living situations. This adjustment in interest rates has also spurred buyer activity. There has been a 26% increase in homes under contract in the past month, indicating a robust buyer market. Lower interest rates are undoubtedly a contributing factor to this upsurge in demand. Additionally, the drop in gas prices, with costs falling below $3 at locations like Costco, provides a further economic relief. While grocery prices remain a concern, the decrease in fuel costs is a welcome change for many. In the new-build sector, developments in Aloravita, located at 71st Avenue, myhyperlocalnews.com
north of Jomax, are experiencing high sales volumes. Potential buyers considering new homes should consider representation to navigate the nuances of new construction purchases. For example, identifying potential issues like utility boxes blocking RV gates is vital. Aloravita is also expanding south of Jomax down to Happy Valley, offering early buyers a chance to build equity as prices rise during construction. I’ve seen prices go up as much as $50,000 while a house was being built. With the models set to be ready around March and six different builders across the north and south sides, the choices for buyers are plentiful. Other developments are also underway, and information on these new homes is readily available upon request.
For any inquiries regarding the market, home valuations, or if you know someone interested in relocating to the area, please feel free to contact me at 623-203-1800. I am always ready to share the many benefits of living in this vibrant community. Frank May grew up in the Valley, graduating from Northwest Christian School and Northern Arizona University. Entertainment
Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“Ferrari” Enzo Ferrari’s personal and business struggles collide as he sets his company to compete in the 1957 Mille Miglia. Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat"). The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire. The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. However, it is Penelope Cruz who astonishes with her portrayal of quiet heartbreak, delivered with minimal 28 • February 2024 • UPPER WESTSIDER
words. Mann's skill as a filmmaker remains undiminished during his hiatus.
“Mayhem” In Thailand, an ex-gang member finds himself forced to return to that world after a family member is kidnapped.
“The Zone of Interest” The Höss family works towards their ideal life in the presence of Auschwitz. Jonathan Glazer's new movie presents a unique form of horror: watching a family lead a seemingly normal life overshadowed by an unspeakable evil. The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly
remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away. “The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him. "The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.
It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact. Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element. It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth. This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing. Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.
