Peoria’s Financial Success Benefits Us All

By Bridget Binsbacher, Peoria City Councilmember, Mesquite District

must constantly ensure that funds will be used wisely and thoughtfully.

AS A PEORIA COUNCILMEMBER, I CARRY A FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY TO MANAGE TAXPAYER DOLLARS RESPONSIBLY. This is no easy task. With a $695 million budget, the City Council

Fortunately, the City of Peoria prides itself on its longstanding financial excellence. Years ago, the Mayor and City Council adopted the Principles of Sound Financial Management, which

establish firm guidelines to reinforce our fiscal stewardship. These “rules of the road” set the foundation to maintain an economically thriving community.

How do finance policies shape our daily decisions? For one, they challenge the Council to consider a long-term perspective. They also remind us to work within our means, thoughtfully manage risk, and encourage constant monitoring of performance. The benefits of this approach can be recognized nationally. Recently, the city of Peoria received a AAA credit rating, the highest rating available. Also, Peoria once again received national awards for Budget Presentation and Financial Reporting. These accomplishments help save taxpayers money when bond financing capital improvements like parks, public safety facilities, and infrastructure. Strong fiscal management also allow us to maximize new resources. This past fall, the City Council authorized funds to staff several key activities. Looking to bring our public safety to the next level, the Council approved 13 police and 15 fire and medical positions. New staff

will be strategically placed to expand city ambulance service, offer new police detectives for investigations, provide additional patrol officers, and support a new training officer. With an eye on our water resources, the Council also approved two positions in the City Water Department concentrating on conservation and water planning. To responsibly manage continued community growth, the Council added five development and engineering positions as well.

With a national reputation and robust financial principles we can witness just how effective our approach has been. In Peoria, we still enjoy lower tax and utility rates than most of our neighboring communities. It also ensures that, year in and year out, we maintain an incredibly safe community with world class amenities. This is why we choose to call Peoria our home. If there is something you would like to see in our district, or if you have any concerns, I want to know. Contact me directly at 623773-7306 or e-mail bridget.binsbacher@ peoriaaz.gov. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Peoria City Council Appoints Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem RECENTLY, THE PEORIA CITY COUNCIL APPOINTED COUNCILMEMBER BILL PATENA AS VICE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER VICKI HUNT AS MAYOR PRO TEM FOR ONE-YEAR TERMS. Previously, Councilmember Jon Edwards served as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Bill Patena served as Mayor Pro Tem. The Vice Mayor performs the duties of the Mayor during her absence or disability. This is a succession position in the case of the Mayor’s permanent absence. The Mayor Pro Tem performs the duties of the Mayor during the absence of both the Mayor and the Vice Mayor. “The appointment of these positions is critically impor4 • February 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

tant to ensure uninterrupted leadership and representation,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “I am grateful for the support that Councilmembers Edwards and Patena provided over the last year, and thankful that Vice Mayor Patena and Mayor Pro Tem Hunt will step into these important positions. As we begin 2022, council and I remain committed to cohesive leadership that enhances the safety and the long-term prosperity of our community.” The appointment of both positions is pursuant to the Peoria City Charter, which states council shall designate one of its members as Vice Mayor and a separate member as Mayor Pro Tem. An Award-Winning City The City of Peoria earns recognition for responsible financial management and policies MOODY’S INVESTORS SERVICES AND THE GOVERNMENT FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION (GFOA) HAVE RECOGNIZED THE CITY OF PEORIA AS ONE OF THE MOST FISCALLY SOUND CITIES IN THE VALLEY. Recently, Peoria was awarded an AAA bond rating and GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. “The AAA bond rating is the highest rating available, and I am thrilled that Peoria has been recognized for its strong financial and economic performance,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Peoria’s discipline in adhering to its Principles of Sound Financial Management assures transparency, protection, and oversight. This rating is a great value to Peoria residents as it allows us to leverage superior financial terms as we provide the infrastructure and amenities that make our city great.” Moody’s Investors Services upgraded the ratings on the city’s outstanding general obligation bonds from Aa1 to AAA. “Material growth in Peoria’s tax base well exceeded prior expectations and strong economic performance as evidenced by growing population, expansion of employment, and substantial development,” according to Moody’s as reasoning for the upgrade. Moody’s also notes the conservative management, budgeting, and the robust financial policies of the city have resulted in “substantial strengthening of the city’s financial position.”

This past December, the City of Peoria closed their bond sale. Given the city’s AAA rating, Peoria was able to issue $55.9 million in general obligation bonds for a true interest cost of 1.65%. This is the lowest interest rate on new bonds for Peoria in 20 years. Also, the City of Peoria received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year 2022 budget document. This is the 24th consecutive year the city has received this award and the 29th time overall. According to GFOA, the award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. “The bond rating and award are a reflection of the city’s commitment to conservative and responsible financial management and budgeting,” says City Manager Jeff Tyne. “The City of Peoria has worked hard to solidify their strong financial position. This, in turn, has allowed us to continually offer the highest quality municipal services to our residents and businesses.” Peoria residents and businesses benefit from the AAA bond rating in that it allows the city to save interest costs when building important infrastructure such as streets, bridges, parks, and public safety facilities. Construction of entrance and exit ramps as part of the Jomax Parkway interchange combined with Peoria’s new roadway provides drivers with another convenient option for traveling between Loop 303 and Vistancia Boulevard. In addition to improving traffic capacity with the new lanes along the six-mile stretch of Loop 303, crews on ADOT’s project constructed freeway bridges that drivers now use to travel over the Beardsley Canal and the Jomax Parkway interchange. Prior to the new bridges, drivers in those areas were traveling on interim sections of roadway to the outside of the freeway’s corridor. The Loop 303 project was funded via the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan. Led by a trained Flexologist who guides guests through a series of stretches specific to their needs, group stretches are limited to six participants at a time. One-on-one sessions can help individuals further customize their needs, focusing on problem areas or targeting certain muscle groups. There are many benefits of a professional-assisted stretching routine, including improved sports performance, increased range of motion and flexibility, decreased joint pain, improve posture, and reduced stress—not to mention a great stretch! A 50-minute session provides a deep and extensive full body stretch focused on all major muscle groups and extremities. A 25-minute maintenance session concentrates solely on major muscle groups to help alleviate muscle tightness.

Play Ball? Spring Training Up in the Air Due to MLB lockout The latest info from the Cactus League the 15 MLB teams and 10 stadiums who participate in Spring Training in Arizona. However, the past few years have looked anything but ordinary. In 2020, the Cactus League ended early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, only a fraction of the fans were allowed into the stadiums across the Valley due to the ongoing pandemic. On December 2, 2021, MLB unanimously voted to put the league in a lockout, after the previous collective

bargaining agreement expired. The owners and players have yet to come to terms on a new deal, meaning all MLB activities will cease to take place until an agreement is reached. For Arizona baseball fans, and baseball fans all over the country, this means that the commencement of the 75th Cactus League Spring Training is in question. “We are keeping a close eye on news regarding the negotiations between the owners and the players on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement,” Cactus League Executive Director Bridget Binsbacher says. “While we don’t want to speculate on the outcome, we are concerned about the possibility

of a work stoppage impacting Spring Training this year.” Although there is uncertainty from the players and teams whether there will be a Spring Training this year, the Cactus League remains ready to host teams, players, and fans. “The Cactus League’s eight host municipalities and the tribal community will be ready to work together to ensure a safe, secure and enjoyable Spring Training experience for all involved,” Binsbacher says. Build Back Better Is Dead, But Your Chance to Secure Energy Independence Is Not

By Erick O’Donnell

“A

ll politics are local,” as a time-tested American saying goes. When considering climate change, the most urgent political issue of our time, we might instinctively balk at this old sawhorse. What, after all, could be less local a concern than the challenges posed by global warming? Yet a closer look reveals that regular people always have the power to effect major change if they are determined to do so, especially if they have the support of their community. All eyes were on the new administration over the past year as it tried to marshal support for its Build Back Better package of public investments—and for good reason. Among other provisions, the bill would have significantly enhanced incentives for green-energy investments, encouraging businesses and individuals to make the kinds of changes needed for the country to fulfill its carbon-reduction commitments. The plan stalled just before this past Christmas in the face of resistance from two Democratic senators. In explaining his refusal to back the bill, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin paid lip service to political ideals, but his considerable vested interest in the dying coal industry is hard to ignore. Kyrsten Sinema, one of our very own senators, remained enigmatic and noncommittal to the end, a puzzling stance toward a rare opportunity to harness her state’s most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But no matter what powerful politicians are doing (or, more to the point, not doing) on the national stage to counteract climate change, there is always something regular people can do. More than 200,000 homeowners in Arizona have already installed solar systems, which produce enough electrical output to power almost a million homes, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association, and Arizonans are only getting started. You can secure dependable, affordable energy for yourself and your family while contributing to clean-energy self-sufficiency for America. And the professionals at SunSolar Solutions, a locally owned full-service solar installer, want to help—even if politicians don’t. New energy initiatives would have been a boon to homeowners and to American green energy as a whole. But 26 percent of the cost of a solar system is still a big chunk of change for Uncle Sam to kick in, and it’s still available until the end of this year. It’s vital, however, that you act soon to take advantage of this temporary generosity because it’s only good for

systems that are placed in service before January 1, 2023. On that date, the credit drops to 22 percent. SunSolar Solutions focuses on maximizing value for customers by leveraging the tax incentive to the hilt. By installing the greatest possible number of panels on your roof, you maximize the amount of money that the U.S. government will be investing in the system and into your home. If the 100 percent design created a $10,000 subsidy, then the 150-percent design will produce a $15,000 subsidy. There is no limit to the size of the system and, therefore, the size of the tax credit. The result of a properly designed system is a lower monthly and annual cost for the household’s electricity. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Our projections show that the average solar customer can expect to save an estimated $50,000 to $100,000 over a 25-year period. Our customer testimonials show that SunSolar is focused on maximizing savings by harnessing the greatest amount of solar energy possible (and, along with it, the greatest tax savings possible). Another big advantage to making the switch to solar as soon as possible is that the system will have time to generate the power needed to knock down this summer’s electricity costs. High summer demand causes higher utility charges, putting pressure on a family’s budget, but if you choose to start your project soon, the system can be installed in time to produce those essential credits. If you act right away, your system could even generate a bit of a surplus over late spring and early summer, helping to further offset the cost of peak summer demand later. The most significant congressional action in a generation to bolster American green energy is dead, and that has serious implications for how quickly and effectively we as a nation can respond to climate challenge. But now is not a good time to throw up your hands and get cynical. It’s time to act. Remember: it’s not up to Joe Manchin whether America—or your household—secures the blessings of reliable, affordable, clean energy. It’s up to you. And SunSolar Solutions is here to help you make the transition. Contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Chase Your Bliss

By Michelle Talsma Everson and Jenna-Lee Neff Photos by Kimberly Carrillo

T

o Northwest Peoria residents Linda Awdisho and her husband Steve, it’s all about supporting the local community. As owners of the Salon Blissful family of locations (three in Peoria and one in Mesa), their latest venture is a Salon Blissful location right here in the Upper Westside, located at 8265 W. Happy Valley Road, Suite 105. A grand opening event is planned for March 19. This new locale features a full-service hair, skin, and medical spa, and is the answer to many Upper Westside residents requesting a business like this in the area. MEETING LOCAL DEMAND “We did a survey and many people in 85383 wanted a local medical spa,” Linda Awdisho says. “By opening our third Peoria location in Northwest Peoria we are giving the community what they asked for—a locally owned medical spa right where they live, work and shop. We live here too and are excited for the convenience of this new location.” Awdisho notes that the Northwest Peoria location of Salon Blissful is not a day spa but a medical spa focused on making a results-driven difference in the lives of its customers. What’s the difference? At Salon Blissful’s new med spa location not only do they offer haircut and color services, but also professional medical-oriented services such as microneedling, dermaplaning, hydrafacials, botox injections and fillers, and more. “All of our service providers have at least three or more years of experience and there is always a nurse or esthetician on staff,” Awdisho explains. “Our front desk staff is also very knowledgeable, and we are always open to giving potential new clients and interested community members a free consultation and tour of the new location at their comfort level.”

Salon Blissful opens its fourth location in the Upper Westside 20 • February 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

The new Northwest Peoria Salon Blissful location is very high end and luxurious, with chandeliers, high ceilings, and relaxing spa music. This is on purpose as Salon Blissful looks to set itself apart from other salons in the area and bring a bit of luxury to Northwest Peoria. “Our salons are upscale quality without the upscale price,” she says. “Our clients also get to enjoy the ambiance of an upscale experience without having to drive all the way into Scottsdale.” BUSINESS GROWTH AND IN-DEMAND SERVICES An active and involved business owner, Awdisho balances her time between all four locations, and can often be found at the new Northwest Peoria locale. She shares that she relocated to Arizona in 2005 and has been a licensed stylist for 25 years. In myhyperlocalnews.com

“

2015, she and her husband purchased the original Salon Blissful located in Mesa before expanding into Peoria in 2017 and again in 2019. They continued expanding to the third Peoria location recently and they have also taken client haircare solutions virtual by creating an online store where customers can purchase well-known, popular brands of hair care and styling products that will be delivered right to their door.

Awdisho says that some of the most popular services they offer include balayage and highlighting for hair and facial fillers like Botox in the medical spa. Another popular skin treatment offered at the medical spa is the hydrafacial, a noninvasive service that deep cleans, exfoliates, and hydrates skin. She adds that Salon Blissful is one of the few medical spas in the West Valley to utilize the state-of-the-art machine. “We are well known in the Peoria community,” says Awdisho. “Like our other two Peoria locations, we strive to provide the best customer service experience for our clients. We want them to leave loving the service they received.”

By opening our third Peoria location in Northwest Peoria we are giving the community what they asked for—a locally owned medical spa right where they live, work and shop. We live here too and are excited for the convenience of this new location.

The couple plans to continue to grow the Salon Blissful brand in coming years, increasing the accessibility to jobs for stylists and medical spa professionals across the Phoenix metro area.

“Steve and I would like to be known as a major salon employer in the local market,” she explains. “Our salons have a combination of commission and independent stylists.”

“I am in the industry, I’m not just a salon owner,” she continues. “I live and breathe the hair industry. So, I treat my staff the way I want to be treated.”

Awdisho says that quality compensation and treatment stylists receive at Salon Blissful keeps turnover low, allowing the company to continue growing as well as building strong client relationships where clients can work continuously with one stylist to meet their haircare needs and goals. “We take care of our employees; therefore, they take care of their clients,” she says. CONNECT WITH THE NORTHWEST PEORIA SALON BLISSFUL LOCATION “We are family-owned and operated, a married team who are also Northwest Peoria residents,” Awdisho says about what she’d like locals to know. “We look forward to serving Northwest Peoria residents and connecting with the community.”

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Clayton Hunter.

I’VE LIVED IN THE NORTHWEST VALLEY FOR 36 YEARS AND VISTANCIA FOR 13 YEARS. I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The great amenities like biking trails, community pools and playgrounds, fun friends, and the small-town feel. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Waking up before everyone to get ready for work and do some quick low back strengthening exercises. I then get breakfast ready for my three girls, Maia, Lainey, and Carson. Since my youngest Carson has been battling cancer, these last few months we have had a very different routine on weeks that she is undergoing chemo. Those weeks have been a mad scramble as my wife frantically packs everything and anything a 7-year-old stuck in a hospital for four days would need. (You can follow her journey at gofundme. 24 • February 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

com/carsonconquerscancer.) If it is a normal week, I would whisk them off to school and rush to my job. My company, Spooner Physical Therapy, recently opened a new location near Lake Pleasant and Jomax. After seeing a full day of patients and speaking with physicians in the area, it’s back home to the family where I help clean up after dinner, brush people’s teeth, and read books until bedtime. After that it is catchup on work time, emails, and TV shows. MY FAMILY IS… Fun, challenging, and wonderful. Raising three daughters has been nothing short of amazing. I am so lucky that my wife Kristi is so thoughtful and attentive to everyone’s needs and that we have so much fun together. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Wireless earbuds. As a total podcast junky I’m always listening to something or trying to learn something wirelessly.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My wife Kristi. She is always pushing me to new heights and her relentless nature and perseverance inspire me to try harder and do better each day.

medical issues all over the Valley. Other favorite nonprofits include: Brave Gowns, Crowns of Courage, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels, and Children’s Cancer Network.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My daughter Carson with her beautiful bald head doing dances from the movie “Encanto.”

MY LIFE IS… A journey of wonder, sadness, hope, love, and happiness.

THE PERFECT DAY… I’d sleep in and go to a coffee shop for a nice cold brew. I’d then attend some sort of ASU, Suns, Cardinals, Mercury, or other sporting event with my girls. After, I’d go to a movie and have dinner and drinks with Kristi at V’s Taproom or Cactus Taproom. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Beanie Love. They provided my family with a wonderful Christmas and I know they do the same for children with

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… Hamilton tickets to take my girls to the show when it was in Phoenix. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… To return to the beautiful country of Portugal with my family. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... Start with “why.” In a great TED Talk, Simon Sinek explains that starting with “why” helps people understand the importance of things. This has helped me both at home and work. PHOTO BY SELENA SORENSON

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “Anchorman” and “The Big Lebowski.” How could you ever tire of Ron Burgundy or The Dude? WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A movie director. I worked for several years at the AMC 14 at Arrowhead Mall (I helped open the theater in 1996) and absolutely love going to the movies. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. Usually everyone “stops, collaborates, and listens” when I’m able to do it. myhyperlocalnews.com

Real Estate

Is the Real Estate Sky Falling? By Frank May, Real Estate Agent

Y

ou might not hear it like I do since I deal in real estate, but I’m constantly hearing the fear in people’s voices about whether the real estate market is going to crash or not. I understand their concern because I was in this industry back in 2008 when it did crash (and most of the people asking were around then too). A lot of people’s financial lives changed negatively back then so there is reason to have some healthy concern about what is going to happen in real estate.

I try my best to remain unemotional and continually look at the numbers to see what the market is doing. I want to know if inventory is rising or falling and what prices are doing. Right now, our inventory on our MLS is below 6,000 homes, which is incredibly low. We haven’t been that low since this past July.

As I type this (in mid-January), there are only 93 homes for sale in 85383. Out of those 93 homes, there are only five homes less than $500,000 and nothing less than $450,000 (and that home will be gone in a couple of days). There are 10 homes listed at $1 million or more! Four homes over $1 million are currently under contract and, in the past 30 days, we’ve had seven homes close for more than $1 million with the highest being $2.75 million.

So, do you need to be scared of a real estate crash coming soon? My opinion right now is based on the numbers and they are telling me the prices are continuing to rise, not crash. I don’t see a crash coming right now, inventory is still too low. If you would like to keep track of your home’s value each month, then send me an email at Frank@MayTeam.com and I will be happy to update you monthly by email.

As you can see, we have no shortage of people wanting to live in 85383, only a shortage of homes. More and more people are hearing about the Upper Westside and they want to be a part of it. They love the newness of the restaurants and businesses. They love the mountain views with the hiking trails. Of course, there’s also the great schools. And, when they get here, they will love the people as well.

Frank May grew up in the Valley, graduating from Northwest Christian School and NAU. He is a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty and has been helping both buyers and sellers for 20 years. Frank May has been a Dave Ramsey Endorsed Local Provider (ELP) since 2003.

Set amongst the natural foothills of the Sonoran Desert, and situated among the most elevated and mountainous land area within Vistancia, the 3,450-acre Northpointe at Vistancia community opened for sales last year and has sold nearly 300 homes in its first phase. Nestled around the foothills of White Peak, the new phase includes both singleand two-story homes ranging from 1,841 to 3,826 square feet. Beazer Homes, a new homebuilder to the Vistancia master plan, will bring 84 homes to Northpointe at Vistancia featuring single- and two-story plans ranging from 1,501 to 2,805 square feet. Additionally, Beazer Homes purchased 51 homesites south of the Central Arizona Project (CAP) in The Village at Vistancia lifestyle community. Show Some Love to Your Family this Valentine’s Day

Kids’ Corner

“T

By Nadine Bubeck

here is only one happiness in life: to love and be loved.”

Valentine’s Day is a reminder that affection and unconditional love can make children emotionally happier and boost their confidence. Sure, it’s a time to celebrate the love you share with your significant other, but it’s also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of loving — and being loved — within the family. Here are seven ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. AFFIRMATION HEARTS Leave a heart on your child’s door each day of February until Valentine’s Day with something you love about them. Be specific in your compliments to make them feel extra special. Address their inner beauty: what makes them a good kid, sibling, son, daughter, student, etc. This is so easily done, nearly free and incredibly rewarding.

PLAN SOME QUALITY TIME Especially true for parents with multiple kids, individual time with each child can be hard to come by. Plan a date with each of your kids separately—truth be told, time is the greatest gift we could give someone. Honor their interests; for example, if one of your children loves art, take a parent-and-child painting class. If another child loves sports, allot time to picnic in the park and play catch. It doesn’t need to be over the top. REVERSE THE ROLES Let the kids play parents for the night. Allow them to cook you and your significant other dinner and dessert— you’ll be surprised how much they’ll enjoy role-playing waiter and waitress. Suggest they make you Valentine’s Day cards and decorate the dinner table with heart-infused drawings. Date night at home courtesy of the kids—score! If you don’t have a partner, let your kids oversee a night out for your family or you and your bestie. Love comes in all forms.

SCHEDULE A FAMILY DATE NIGHT Whether it’s movie night, game night, or craft night, celebrate Valentine’s Day by doing something special in the comfort of home. Order pizza, make popcorn, and wear PJs, and simply enjoy being in one another’s company. For dessert, decorate heart-shaped cookies.

different kinds of love. There are so many kid-friendly books on the topic, too!

DELIVER VALENTINES Chances are your kids will be making Valentines for all their classmates, but you can take this a step further by making Valentines for friends and family. In fact, you can also show the community some love by delivering cookies to your local fire station or police department. Practicing appreciation is a good lesson of love to teach your kids.

CONSIDER THE SIMPLE THINGS Sure, there are so many cliches when it comes to V-Day, but sometimes the most important Valentine’s Day message isn’t in the form of something monetary. As parents, all we want is to make sure our kids feel safe, secure, and loved, but how can we do that aside from telling them we love them? Simple ideas include showing physical affection, reading together, and showing enthusiasm in what they’re talking about, what they’re doing, etc. Let them dream, listen to their dreams, and encourage them to work toward pursuing them. Show your family some love this Valentine’s Day and every day.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Kids learn most from their parents and caregivers, so for them to learn love, they must be shown love. If you’re in a romantic relationship, show them photos and talk about it. If you’re not, point to friendships and other relationships and talk about the

The Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits’ Senior Vice President and Director of Development Jennifer Purcell shares that new features rolled out in the past year include peerto-peer fundraising, an early-giving leaderboard, and a collective listing of events and volunteer opportunities for viewing in one place. “These features were created to encourage year-round use of the website and assist with connecting the community with nonprofit organizations of interest,” Purcell says. “This year, returning participants can take advantage of special QR codes, ‘donate’ buttons to imbed on a website, and an auto-generated repeating donation feature to encourage previous donors to give again.” Arizona Gives unites nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. Arizona Gives helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously to create a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Information required for registration and re-enrollment includes general information about the nonprofit, an IRS Determination Letter, the most current completed financials through Form 990 or the organization’s operating budget, and a bank account and routing number for electronic distribution of donations. Arizona Gives provides virtual workshops to assist in making each participant’s fundraising experience a success. Workshops take place through March. Registrants can participate in real time or view the recording later. “Arizona Gives offers a number of significant options for both nonprofits and donors including the ability for year-

round giving and for donors to create personal fundraiser campaigns,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. New 2022 campaign features for nonprofits include: • New ways for nonprofits to direct traffic to their Arizona Gives Day profiles including options for an embeddable donation button and QR code. • Ability to send thank-you emails directly from the Arizona Gives Day platform. • An option for the peer fundraiser page “hero image” to be either static or as a video. • Ability for nonprofits to link to their Vimeo videos in addition to YouTube. • A new Repeat Your Donation feature which enables donors to review previous donations and then make that specific donation again or add to it with a click of a button. • In addition to creating a fundraiser page, donors also can create a donor account to set up recurring donations, track their giving throughout the year, or they may simply check out as a guest. Complete information, including answers to important questions about Arizona Gives Day, can be found at AZGives.org.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal

IN THEATERS

The director does a good job showing us their lives day by day as they continue to destroy themselves and each other, convinced some salvation still awaits them. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and tragic all at once—the best kind of film.

chase scenes and kills, but the writing only provides laughable connections to the original film and the usual “Scream” archetypes, giving their actors little to work with (though Jack Quaid and Jenna Ortega stand out well). By the end, it leaves you feeling, if not empty, unfulfilled, and sad watching all that talent wasted.

filmmaking and performances feel better made for the stage than film.

COMING SOON

ON APPLE TV+ “Nightmare Alley” A con man’s rise and fall told in two acts, from the circus to the highest part of society, as he schemes his way with his fake psychic powers. Guillermo del Toro has always made films that can best be described as dark fairy tales, with their heightened sense of reality and unique designs and visuals. With his new film, he changes it up, slamming the film into harsh, wet reality, with only his heightened production design remaining. “Nightmare Alley” is a cold, bleak movie with little hope or light to be found as we watch our characters kill, cheat, and abandon each other for their gain. The actors perfectly reach their different levels of habitability, watching them slowly get further into the underbelly of the world they live in. Slow is a good word to describe this movie, one that wants you to experience every second of its ugly reality. It’s a watch that requires you to be patient, but if you stick with it, it rewards you well. “Red Rocket” A down-and-out actor’s journey to success as he moves back to his hometown. The events in “Red Rocket” are like a very humorous accident, one you can’t look away from as it gets worse and worse. Simon Rex’s performance as Mikey Saber is one of the best “scumbag” lead characters I’ve seen in recent years; a character that completely lacks selfawareness and is filled with delusions of grandeur. The supporting cast is filled with other colorful characters played by all sorts of discoveries by Sean Baker. 32 • February 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

February 4 • “Moonfall” “Scream” Twenty-five years after the original murders, a new killer arrives, forcing the original survivors to unite with a new generation to stop them. I’m likely biased in this case as, outside of the fourth film, I’ve never really cared for “Scream” and only saw this new film due to the involvement of the filmmakers behind 2019’s excellent horror-comedy “Ready Or Not.” With this new installment, you get a meta take on legacy sequels and their family relations in typical “Scream” fashion (even despite the new directors and writers). As per usual with these movies (beyond the surprisingly clever fourth film from 2011), it’s obnoxious, to say the least and doesn’t have anything of intrigue to bring up. The directors do bring some good set pieces with the

• “Jackass Forever” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” A retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic play. As an exercise in visuals, Joel Coen’s solo debut as a director works. The minimalist production design is a sight to behold and, mixed with the black and white photography, it reminds one of classic German expressionism. Beyond that, if you’ve seen a prior version of Macbeth you’ve basically seen this one, as there’s little that this version offers to differ from prior versions. The main difference is the bigger stars than other film adaptations, and unfortunately, the main two leads, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, are miscast and don’t fit the devious nature of the characters. The other actors fare better, but the

Getaway

Experience an Oasis of Tranquility at Royal Palms Resort and Spa THE PERFECT LOCAL ESCAPE FOR RELAXATION, ROMANCE, AND RICH ARIZONA HISTORY

R

oyal Palms Resort and Spa is one of the most sought-after resort experiences in the Valley, combining the graciousness and sophistication of a Mediterranean villa with the intimacy and privacy of a secluded luxury retreat. The resort was originally built in 1929 as El Vernadero, a wellness retreat for Cunard Steamship executive and financier Delos Cooke and his wife. The Cookes modeled their home and architecture after their beloved European adventures and used much of their income to purchase and plant rare flora, including 900 palms, many imported from Egypt. The original mansion still sits at the center of the resort today. Following Cooke’s 1931 death, the estate changed hands several times until visionary Al Stovall purchased the property in the 1940s. Stovall and his partners guided the estate’s transition from private home to inn, adding 15 casitas and converting the main house into several additional guest rooms, a reception area, and dining space. In 1948, the Royal Palms Inn officially opened to guests, and the first reservations were recorded. Local businessman Fred Unger purchased the property in 1995 and was responsible for the hotel’s 1996-1997 restoration, which brought to life the property today known as Royal Palms Resort and Spa. Royal Palms Resort boasts 119 beautifully appointed guest rooms, casitas, and luxury villas each designed to emulate a classic Spanish estate. Warm desert hues and rich woods are complemented by natural sunlight billowing through the windows with each room offering views of the perfectly manicured resort grounds. Deluxe rooms and suites boast breathtaking views of the iconic Camelback Mountain while the resort’s villas feature stone floors, fireplaces, and private patios for an added touch of serenity and luxury. A not-to-be-missed experience at Royal Palms Resort is the signature Alvadora Spa, an eight-room spa and wellness oasis that integrates the indoors and outdoors in a warm, welcoming environment. Alvadora Spa boasts an impressive treatment menu offering organic therapies and massages to help guests achieve the ultimate state of relaxation and restoration for both body and soul. Inspired by the property’s longstanding orange groves, citrusinspired signature treatments include the Citrus Ritual, which begins with a full body exfoliation with water gently cascading from above followed by relaxation in the spa’s garden tub and private patio area, concluding with a customized massage. The Orange Blossom Body Buff offers a full body

exfoliation with the spa’s signature scent of Neroli to soften and renew the skin and is completed with an orange blossom oil application. Offering views of Camelback Mountain and the resort’s mother-of-pearl swimming pool, Royal Palms Resort’s two-story fitness center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, including a Peloton bike to help guests stay active. For those looking to indulge in fitness and wellness experiences from the comfort of their own room, the resort’s Wellness on Demand program offers an evolving menu of classes like Barre, HIIT and yoga. The resort is also conveniently located to nearby running and biking trails. Perfect for sipping and savoring, Royal Palms Resort boasts multiple culinary concepts. T. Cook’s serves as the resort’s signature restaurant, offering the highest quality Mediterranean-inspired cuisine prepared by award-winning Executive Chef Lee Hillson. Commemorating its 25th anniversary this year, T. Cook’s celebrates hand-selected seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients with notes of regional influence from Northern Italy, Greece, and Spain. Additional food and beverage experiences include Mix Up, an elevated cocktail lounge serving garden-to-glass libations, and Via Cappello, a private dining experience named for a romantic residence in Verona, Italy. This Valentine’s Day, those looking for a romantic getaway can experience the resort’s Royal Romance package and Via Cappello dining experience. The package includes a special welcome amenity, daily breakfast for two, dinner credit to T. Cook’s, a rose petal turndown, and late checkout, which can be booked online. The Via Cappello dining experience is customized for couples to savor up to five chefinspired courses from T. Cook’s on a private patio or intimate garden setting complemented by rose petals and candles with special upgrades available. The experience can be booked by emailing Jeffrey Skalski at Jeffrey.Skalski@royalpalmshotel.com. This content is sponsored by Royal Palms Resort and Spa.
