City News Shaping the Art Scene in Peoria: Arts Master Plan Overview By Bridget Binsbacher, Peoria Councilmember, Mesquite District ART IS AT THE HEART OF EVERY THRIVING COMMUNITY. The city of Peoria is painting the picture of the city’s art landscape with the launch of the new arts master plan. The city has contracted the consulting firm, Designing Local, to engage our community and create the Peoria Arts Master Plan to coincide with the city’s newly adopted General Plan. The new arts master plan will assist the mayor, city council, the Arts Commission, and city staff in defining priorities and guide our planning and decisions for the next 10 years. The current arts master plan was adopted by council in 2009 and has served the city well in establishing the Percent for the Arts Fund, the Arts Commission, and the priorities for public art and the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. The new
version of the arts master plan will focus on community engagement, positioning Peoria for the anticipated growth the city will see over the next 10 years. Arts, culture, and recreation are key categories in the city’s livability goals, and they are distinguishing factors in differentiating Peoria from other West Valley cities. The return on investment in a strong master plan can be calculated in so many ways. It’s the tourist who comes for a photo in front of a mural, a sculpture or a lighting installation. It’s the family who buys a home because they are inspired by the local park’s public artwork. Art sets a city apart and gives it a personality. The arts create jobs, encourage critical thinking and attracts businesses to our community. Most importantly, arts, culture and recreational amenities and programs give our residents a sense of pride and belonging, create a quality of life, and attract visitors to our city.
“VIDA” BY BETH NYBECK. EXPERIENCE IT AT PALOMA PARK. Once we are back to in-person events, be on the lookout for your opportunity to connect with the Peoria Arts and Events Team and share your ideas for the future of Peoria. There will also be many virtual opportunities to engage as well. Collecting community input will take place this
spring and, once the plan is developed, it will be presented to mayor and council. Contact the Arts and Events Division with your questions and comments at peoriaaz.gov/arts. We look forward to connecting to our community through arts and culture.
Peoria City Council Appoints Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem PEORIA MAYOR CATHY CARLAT AND CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPOINTED COUNCILMEMBER JON EDWARDS TO SERVE AS VICE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER BILL PATENA TO SERVE AS MAYOR PRO TEM FOR ONE YEAR TERMS. Previously, Councilmember Michael Finn served as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Jon Edwards served as Mayor Pro Tem. “The appointment of these positions is critically important as we take care to protect Peoria residents from any lapse in accountable leadership and proper representation,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “I am grateful for the extra support that Councilmembers Finn and Edwards provided to our community over the last year, and thankful that Vice Mayor Edwards and Mayor Pro Tem Patena will now represent our city in these important positions.” The appointment of both positions is pursuant to City Charter, which states Council shall designate one of its members as Vice Mayor and a separate member as Mayor Pro Tem. Both positions serve in such capacity at the decision of City Council and at terms established by Council. 4 • February 2021 • UPPER WESTSIDER
The Vice Mayor performs the duties of the Mayor during his/her absence or disability. This is a succession position in the case of the Mayor’s permanent absence. The Mayor Pro Tem performs the duties of the Mayor during the absence of both the Mayor and the Vice Mayor. “Council and I remain committed to cohesive leadership that enhances the transparency, safety and long-term prosperity of our growing community,” says Mayor Carlat. Councilmember Jon Edwards has a long history of service within the city in a variety of capacities. Some highlights include positions with the Valley Metro Board of Directors
and graduation from the Peoria Leadership Institute, among many other accolades. He and his wife Brenda have been married since 1991, and they have lived in Peoria since 2001. The Edwards have three children who all attended local district schools. Councilmember William (Bill) Patena was first elected to the serve the citizens of Peoria in November 2012 and was reelected to a second term in 2016. He spent the last eighteen years of his professional career with the city of Peoria as the Neighborhood Services Manager. During that time, he managed Dial-a-Ride, Public Housing, Community Development Block Grants and Neighborhood Pride Programs. myhyperlocalnews.com

City News ADOT’s Loop 303 widening project gears up in Peoria Crews to add Jomax connection, new lanes north of Happy Valley Parkway A PROJECT TO WIDEN A STRETCH OF LOOP 303 IN THE NORTHWEST VALLEY IS UNDERWAY AS CREWS BEGIN CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGE SUPPORTS NEAR THE FUTURE JOMAX PARKWAY. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is managing construction of the $20.3 million regional freeway project, which is designed to improve capacity for current and future traffic needs by adding a third lane in each direction along Loop 303 between Happy Valley and Lake Pleasant parkways. Initial work began in December 2020. Crews are now constructing support piers for bridges to carry new mainline lanes of Loop 303 over the area where Jomax Parkway will connect to a new traffic interchange. The entire project is scheduled for completion by early 2022. The city of Peoria will build a new stretch of Jomax Parkway between Loop 303 and Vistancia Boulevard.
ADOT’s project also will add new Loop 303 bridges over the Beardsley Canal. Loop 303 traffic in the area north of Happy Valley Parkway currently travels along two lanes in each direction in an interim configuration established when the freeway was first built nearly a decade ago. No major traffic restrictions are needed during the current stage of construction work, which is taking place in the Loop 303 median. Drivers should use caution near the existing work zones, temporary barrier walls along shoulders, and watch for crews and equipment in the area. The Loop 303 project is funded as part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Prop 400, a dedicated sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. More information about the Loop 303 project is available at adot.gov.

Pkwy. will be closed 83rd Ave. to 91st Ave. • Feb. 16-20: Westbound Lake Pleasant Pkwy. will be closed 91st Ave. to 95th Ave. • Feb. 26-28: Lake Pleasant Pkwy. and 83rd Ave. intersection will be closed. • Mar. 1-5: Utilities will be raised and the roadway re-striped, alternating lane restrictions. City planners suggest that local residents should plan ahead and use an alternate route. For project updates, visit peoriaaz.gov/streetmaintenance or call the 24-hour project hotline at 602-532-6250. This construction project initially began on January 11.
“Peoria contracted with Nesbitt Contracting to conduct an asphalt mill and overlay to Lake Pleasant Parkway, between Beardsley Road and 95th Avenue,” according to the city. “The tentative schedule consists of several phases with related traffic restrictions…In the event the schedule needs to be adjusted, the dates may change but the sequence will remain the same. Work is scheduled to take place daytime hours through March 5, Monday through Saturday; however, traffic control will remain in place 24 hours to protect the work area.” Editor’s note: This phasing schedule is accurate as of press time (January 25). 83 Marketplace Plans Summer Opening for Multiple Tenants 83 MARKETPLACE JUST ANNOUNCED THAT ALL THREE BUILDINGS (APPROX. +/- 19,500 SQ. FT.) ARE AT SUBSTANTIAL COMPLETION AND FINAL INSPECTIONS FOR PHASE 1 ARE IN PROCESS WITH THE CITY OF PEORIA. All suites were turned over to their leased tenants to start their buildouts with projected openings in the summer. As with most new builds during the height of the pandemic, there was tenant fallout, material and manpower shortages, and schedule pushbacks. 83 Marketplace/MDC Land Development adapted their strategy to accommodate different uses/tenants while preserving the original vision of local, non-chain uses and restaurants. This included creating smaller suite spaces, and more patio and additional open air areas to adapt to the current climate. The tenants at 83 Marketplace are local, all are small businesses, and looking forward to expanding to North Peoria. The shopping center is working with local restaurant groups to bring new, diverse, and smaller space/open
air concepts to 83 Marketplace in Phase 2 (another +/20,000 sq. ft.). As the economy opens up, leasing for new builds is once again gaining momentum, whereas second generation vacant space left by the closures due to the pandemic is becoming less available. CURRENT TENANTS · Howlers Restaurant & Sports Bar · Euro Café · Salon Blissful · The Bourbon Cellar · F45 Training · Heartland Dental IN LEASE NEGOTIATION: · A well-known Scottsdale bakery · A vet/animal care facility · A full-service nail salon

Doug Smith, owner of The Bourbon Cellar in Scottsdale, plans to open a location in 83 Marketplace in Phase 2. “I

A Local Teen Hosts a Supply Drive for Women In Need By Emma Wolff MOST TEENAGERS SPEND HOURS SCROLLING THROUGH TIKTOK TO LEARN THE LATEST VIRAL DANCES. However, Sydney Helmuth, a junior at Barry Goldwater High School, used TikTok to discover Her Drive. Her Drive is a national nonprofit organization that collects gently used bras, general hygiene
supplies and menstrual products for underprivileged and under-resourced communities. After learning more about this organization, building a local drive became a passion for Helmuth. “As high school students, we often feel there is a disconnect between what we can accomplish and what will actually make an impact in our community,” says
Helmuth. “Her Drive was our way to create a positive change close to home.”
periods while providing hygienic supplies to those in need,” she adds.
The national nonprofit organization, Her Drive, aims to help women who are disproportionately affected by homelessness and poverty by providing feminine hygiene essentials. Although this organization is throughout the United States, individuals can host local drives in their city to support the national program. There have been Her Drives in over 15 cities in the United States but none in Arizona. But, now thanks to Helmuth and several other Valley teens, there is a Her Drive in Phoenix.
The Phoenix Her Drive is accepting donations through the end of the month. Due to COVID-19, there will be contactless pickups every Saturday and Monday. However, if these days don’t work, Helmuth and her team will work with donors to find a different day for pickup. In additional to menstrual care products, some of high demand items include over-the-counter medications, haircare products and other toiletries.
“I started the Phoenix Chapter of Her Drive with the help of two amazing friends, Skye Walsh and Ava Matsumoto, as a way to help members of our community who are often overlooked. We had been hearing about the public health crisis known as ‘period poverty’ for a while and finally found a way to help,” Helmuth says. “Although none of us have dealt with period poverty, we do experience the stigma of periods every day. The topic of menstruation has always been taboo, even though half of the world goes through it. We are seeking to end the embarrassment that many feel about myhyperlocalnews.com
All donations will be sent to homeless shelters around the Valley including UMOM New Day Center and Vista Colina Emergency Family Housing. Donations can also be made through Amazon Smile; however, these supplies will go to various shelters across the nation. Monetary donations can also be made through the mobile payment service Venmo to the account @HerDrive. All contributions will make a significant difference to women who need help. As of press time, the spring training season is set to begin on February 27, but the many local officials hope it is pushed back at least a month to give time for COVID-19 cases to go down. Stephanie Pressler, director of community affairs at Experience Scottsdale, says that Major League Baseball (MLB) will play a major role in dictating what happens during spring training. “Many of the spring training facilities have limited capacities that are set by Major League Baseball,” she says. Many of these changes will be coming to fields such as the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick and Peoria Sports Complex, where, if fans can attend games, they’ll be enforcing protocols to help keep fans safe when spring training kicks off. “The teams and stadiums are planning to implement enhanced cleaning and safety protocols should fans be allowed,” Pressler says. There’s still a lot of uncertainty as to whether or not
fans will be allowed to attend any of the spring training games. In a Forbes article written by Maury Brown, Major League Baseball claimed that they’ll do everything they can to coordinate with county health officials and the MLB Players Association to ensure that things start smoothly and on time. “As we get closer, we will, in consultation with public health authorities, our medical experts, and the Players Association, determine whether any modifications should be considered in light of the current surge in COVID-19 cases and the challenges we faced in 2020 completing a 60-game season in a sport that plays every day,” according to Major League Baseball. What does this mean for fans who are desperate to catch a quick game? At this point in time, everything is up in the air. Assuming that fans are allowed to attend games, there may be a reduced number of tickets available for purchase. Major League Baseball may also implement a limitation on the size of groups that come to games as well as how far apart people are sitting while in the stadium. MLB doesn’t appear to have set a requirement for fans to be vaccinated before attending games, nor are they requiring temperature checks. Of course, this could all change at any point in time depending on COVID-19’s trajectory. For the latest spring training updates and information, visit cactusleague.com. Traffic Safety Funds Awarded to Peoria PD to Help Increase Road Safety and Education Contributed by the Peoria Police Department THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY RECENTLY AWARDED THE PEORIA POLICE DEPARTMENT A TOTAL OF $219,676 IN GRANTS TO HELP INCREASE DUI ENFORCEMENT, TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT, AND EDUCATION IN AND AROUND THE CITY OF PEORIA. The department will use $30,000 of the grant funds to continue to improve the enforcement of traffic safety laws intended to reduce death, injury, property damage and promote roadway safety, along with deterring aggressive and distracted drivers. The funds will also provide for continuing education that increases the public’s awareness associated with the dangers of speeding, aggressive/distracted driving, and continue to provide training and updates on traffic laws to officers. An additional $30,000 will be used to assist the department in combating illegal street racing activity by allowing officers to work in an overtime capacity on special details and task forces. These details and task forces are designed to enforce laws in regard to illegal street racing. An additional $2,748 will be used to purchase a moving radar system that will be utilized to enforce speeding issues throughout the City of Peoria. The department will utilize $88,000 of the grant funds to reduce impaired driving, which is a high priority objective for the state. Effective enforcement is an essential countermeasure to reducing DUI offenses and the deadly crashes that can be associated with impaired drivers. Driving while under the influence can carry a hefty price tag, including criminal and legal expenses, property damage, and more importantly, the loss of human life. The department was also granted $4,955 to assist in purchasing Lifeloc FC 10 Plus portable breathe testers to assist officers during DUI investigations. Seventeen thousand dollars of the grant funds will be used to assist in training classes to help officers advance their
abilities in DUI alcohol/drug detection and investigation. In addition, $13,379 of the grant funds provided to the City of Peoria will be used to help promote motorcycle safety. This funding will allow Peoria police motorcycle officers to provide instruction to intermediate riders and further promote safe riding habits. Two motorcycle safety courses will be offered free of charge to the riding public this year. Officers will continue to address motorcycle safety through education and enforcement utilizing these funds. The final $28,095 in grant funds will be utilized to help increase pedestrian, school zone, school bus, and bicycle safety in and around the City of Peoria. This funding will allow Peoria police officers to focus their time and energy on making the roadways safe for pedestrians. The Peoria Police Department plans to utilize grant funding for overtime enforcement and providing educational awareness about the traffic laws and safety rules in these areas. This grant will also allow the department to continue their Bicycle Safety Partnership by providing instruction to grade school students as well as hosting multiple Bicycle Safety Rodeos throughout the city. Peoria police will also be utilizing $5,519 to purchase bicycle safety helmets, which will be provided free to children during local events. This funding will allow Peoria police officers to provide a multi-faceted approach to traffic safety through education, deterrence, and aggressive enforcement of the state’s traffic and DUI laws. myhyperlocalnews.com

Duet’s Family Caregiver Virtual Symposium Invites Caregivers to Learn From Nation’s Top Caregiving Experts WHILE ENDURING COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS AND THE PASSING OF HIS WIFE OF 56 YEARS, GERALD WOOD CREATES PAINTINGS TO KEEP HIM UPLIFTED. Though he’s dabbled in art since he was six years old, it became a full-time endeavor only a few years ago, in his late 70s. “I started when my wife was in bad shape,” he says. Wood was the caregiver for his Alzheimer’s-afflicted wife, Linda, with whom he shared “a love affair since day one.” While participating in a caregiver support group offered by Duet: Partners In Health & Aging, he was introduced to the book, “Loving Someone Who Has Dementia: How
to Find Hope While Coping with Stress and Grief,” by Dr. Pauline Boss. “Dr. Boss was a lifesaver,” says Wood. “Her book spoke to me at a time when I needed it. The rigors of caregiving can either break you or make you. She says re-inventing yourself is the key to surviving.” In response to her encouragement to “broaden your identity and do what makes you happy,” Wood began taking art courses. He began to bring his paintings to the support group for “show and tell.” Fellow caregivers bought some of his work and commissioned pieces. That launched a new pursuit. His work has been selected for exhibitions, including one with the Mayo Clinic Loaned Artwork Program. Thanks to Duet, where he discovered Dr. Boss, Wood says he has a new lease on life—a purpose. “My art, friends, family, faith and outside interests, including Duet, make me feel younger than my years. Life is a banquet!” FAMILY CAREGIVER VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM Caregivers, as well as medical professionals, who seek inspiration from Dr. Pauline Boss have an opportunity to hear her speak at the upcoming Family Caregiver Virtual

Symposium presented by Duet. Dr. Boss will discuss “Caregiving in the Midst of Pandemic Uncertainty.” Drawing from her most recent book, “The Myth of Closure: Ambiguous Loss in a Time of Pandemic” (W. W. Norton, 2021), she will discuss how new ambiguous losses have been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and how family caregivers can cope and stay resilient. Co-presenter, Dr. Arthur Kleinman, M.D., will discuss “The Soul of Care: Addressing the Crisis in Caregiving.” Drawing from his most recent book, “The Soul of Care: The Moral Education of a Husband and a Doctor,” he will share his reflections about caring for his wife, and how the experience transformed his thinking about our medical system and the need to put those who give care at its center. KJZZ reporter, Kathy Ritchie, will moderate the event, which is sponsored by AARP Phoenix. Participants will have an opportunity to submit questions during the presentation. The event takes place on Wednesday, February 17 from 9 – 11 a.m. Family caregivers are free; professionals are $15. Register at duetaz.org/symposium to be sent link prior to the event. Registration will remain open until February 15 at 5 p.m.

ARIZONA HISTORY:
A ROOTIN’ TOOTIN’ LEGEND OF THE WEST By Jill “MamaBug” Frier
O
n Valentine’s Day, Arizona will celebrate its 109th birthday. It took 49 years for Arizona to become a state from the time it was first declared a territory, but the 48th state finally was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1912. One of the many things we love about the great state of Arizona is it’s wild and wooly past. The tales told about the special places in this state make learning about the history of the Wild West a rootin’ tootin’ hoedown! Arizona had its share of controversy and mayhem on the journey toward statehood, but our history pre-dates the beginnings of the United States. Oraibi, a village on the Hopi reservation, was settled prior to 1100 A.D. and is one of oldest continuously inhabited settlements within the United States. Prehistoric ruins of native people date back thousands of years and are widespread throughout Arizona. One of the oldest standing European structures in the country, San Xavier del Bac mission in Tucson, was built in 1699. And our most famous landmark, the Grand Canyon, is not only around 17 million years old, but is also one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the only one located within the United States. Here are few fun facts about State 48, the Grand Canyon State, that you might not have known: • The first barrel of tequila ever was produced in Nogales, Arizona, in 1936.
16 • February 2021 • UPPER WESTSIDER
• Arizona has the two largest man-made lakes in America: Lake Mead and Lake Powell. • Lake Powell has a shoreline of 2,000 miles, more than the Pacific Coast. • Donkeys are not allowed to sleep in bathtubs. • It is illegal to refuse a person a glass of water. • You can be put in jail for up to 25 years for cutting down a Saguaro cactus. • The first McDonald’s drive-thru window was opened in Sierra Vista. • The world’s oldest rodeo is in Prescott. • The FAA was created in 1958 as the result of two airplanes crashing over the Grand Canyon. To see some of our Old West history up close and personal, check out a few of these popular day trips from Phoenix to get a flavor of Arizona before it became a state: PIONEER LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM: The Pioneer Living History Museum in north Phoenix, just south of Anthem on I-17, is an Old West village made up of authentic buildings and accurate reproductions of real historic structures from different locations around Arizona. SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM: The Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott is located on the site of the first Territorial Governor’s residence and offices and features historic exhibit buildings, artifacts, and gardens. The museum was named for Sharlot Mabridth Hall, a well-known poet, activist, politician, and Arizona’s first territorial historian.
FORT VERDE STATE PARK: Camp Verde in the central Arizona’s Verde Valley, is full of historic sites, including Fort Verde State Park, a well-preserved example of the Arizona Territory in the wild west era of the late 1800s, and the nearby Montezuma’s Castle National Monument, an 800-year-old legacy of the Sinagua people who lived in ancient Arizona. JEROME: Jerome, west of Camp Verde, was once a thriving copper mining town and is today well known for its hauntings. BESH BA GOWAH: Just outside the city of Globe, east of the Superstition Mountains, is Besh Ba Gowah, an archeological park featuring the ruins of the ancient Salado people who lived in the Globe-Miami area almost 800 years ago. TOMBSTONE: Tombstone, located south of Tucson, is home of the infamous OK Corral and is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. These are just a few of the many spots in Arizona to learn about our Wild West past. If you want to check out a piece of Grand Canyon State history up close, take a day or weekend trip to one of these great historic spots. Be sure to check Ladybug’s Blog at ladybugsblog.com for more ideas for great places to get your kids out of the house to enjoy historic and fun adventures throughout the state of Arizona.

Peoria Unified Student Nominated for U.S. Presidential Scholar in CTE
L
iberty High School senior Liam Beltram was recently selected as one of five Arizona nominees for the 2020-2021 U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education (CTE). Beltram was selected by a review team consisting of CTE stakeholders based on evidence of academic rigor, technical competence, professional employability skills, and ingenuity and creativity. According to the Association for Career and Technical Education, high school students involved in CTE are “more engaged, perform better and graduate at higher rates.” CTE statistics include: • Taking one CTE class for every two academic classes minimizes the risk of
students dropping out of high school. • The average high school graduation rate for students concentrating in CTE programs is 93 percent, compared to an average national freshman graduation rate of 80 percent. • 91 percent of high school graduates who earned two to three CTE credits enrolled in college. As one of the five Arizona nominees, Beltram was selected by the Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, Kathy Hoffman, and was submitted by her office to the Commission on Presidential Scholars at the U.S. Department of Education. As a semifinalist nominee, he will be invited to apply for the National Review by the Commission on Presidential Scholars at the U.S. Department of Education. Twenty
outstanding U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education students will be recognized in May. Beltram participated in several of Peoria Unified’s CTE programs throughout his tenure at Liberty High School, including Engineering and Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC).
Peoria Unified School District, through a partnership with WEST-MEC, offers high school students a variety of CTE opportunities. Some of the programs offer students the chance to earn college credit while still in high school and also receive on-the-job training. For more information about Peoria Unified’s CTE programs, visit peoriaunified.org/cte.

Community Girl Scouts-Cactus Pine Council Build “Cookie Castle” at The Shops at Norterra
A
s with many things this year, selling homes and cookies is being done differently which is why Homie Arizona has partnered with the Girl Scouts-Cactus Pine Council. Through the philanthropic arm of the company called Homie Helps, a $15,000 donation was made to support cookie sales, foster creativity, engineering, and entrepreneurial skills among the Girl Scouts. Like Homie, Girl Scouts encourages innovation and finding new ways of doing things. When Girl Scouts were forced to sell cookies differently as a result of safety precautions due to the coronavirus pandemic, they wanted to create something eye-catching and fun. The result – a “cookie castle.”
Cactus Pine Council’s cookie selling efforts this year,” says Joshua Miller, general manager at Homie Arizona. “When we learned they were forced to shift gears we wanted to support the fundraising efforts and life skills by aiding in the building of the cookie castle.” The annual cookies sale is a major fundraiser for Girl Scouts in Arizona, supporting opportunities for girls to learn, grow, and enjoy new experiences. The Cactus Pine Council’s goal is to sell 2.1 million packages of cookies this year.
One local scout, Mija Kaprosy, and her father, are building a 13-foot by 13-foot by 9-foot tall castle mostly out of Girl Scout cookie boxes. This will be the focal point to the Cactus-Pine Council’s cookie selling space located at The Shops at Norterra, 2450 W. Happy Valley Road, beginning on February 7.
“The pandemic has forced us to consider new options for selling cookies this year,” says Tamara Woodbury, CEO of Arizona Cactus-Pine Council. “When Homie stepped in to help promote a new cookie booth location, they provided a unique way to showcase what Girl Scouting is all about – perseverance, creativity, entrepreneurial and teamwork skills. We are excited to debut the cookie castle and hope the community is as impressed and amazed by it as we are.”
“At Homie, we applaud innovation and embrace making smart, creative changes which is why we wanted to support and encourage the Girl Scouts-
The public can purchase cookies and view the cookie castle every Sunday this month beginning on February 7.

E
very year, hundreds of brave Peoria residents show up for the annual Peoria Polar Plunge, a tradition since 2008. This annual plunge into cold water is to bring awareness of water safety in the winter months and raise money for underprivileged children to take free swim lessons. The event has been cancelled this year but donations for swim lessons are still being encouraged. Peoria residents can still register, donate and receive a free t-shirt like previous years. Registration is $25, which will sponsor a free two-week swim lesson session in the spring and summer. To donate and get your shirt, go to peoriaaz. gov/recplace and type in course code 24556. This will lead you to the Polar Plunge donation page. “The donation drive is lasting through the end of February,” says Kristina Perez, Peoria’s Marketing and Communications Manager. “Typically, in the past, the donation drive is just the day of the Polar Plunge, but since the event was cancelled, they have allowed more time to get donations.” “Drowning is not just a problem during the warm, summer months, but every day,” according to Peoria Aquatics. “You can still do your part and help out the community by donating $25 that goes

Four Ways to Prevent the Flu By Dr. Stephanie M. Seitz, ND, MT
M
any people recognize flu season as fall and winter, but February is typically the peak of flu activity. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it’s more important than ever to stay healthy, so how can we prevent getting sick? Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself well during the peak of the flu season. WASH YOUR HANDS The pandemic has shone a light on the importance of hand washing, and for good reason. Washing your hands often is the easiest and most effective way to prevent the spread of germs. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to wash your hands before and after touching your face, touching your mask, touching a surface that’s frequently touched by others and, of course, after using the restroom. Germs can live on surfaces for two hours or more, so it’s important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have access to soap and water, an alcohol-based wipe or hand sanitizers are good alternatives.
INCORPORATE VITAMIN D According to research by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, vitamin D plays a role in reducing your likelihood of developing the flu. However, most Americans are deficient in this vitamin, which can lead to rickets, poor immune system function, and risk of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D storages can be increased by exposure to sunlight, eating fish, egg yolks, beef liver or taking supplementation. However, you should have your blood checked by your physician before supplementing as too much vitamin D can be toxic and can damage your kidneys.
STAY HYDRATED Staying properly hydrated can support the immune system and allow it to defend your body from viruses. Drinking at least half your body weight in water in ounces is a great way to stay hydrated which enables your body to fight off the flu. It will also help improve your quality of sleep, cognition and mood. If you have a hard time drinking enough water, consider adding your favorite fresh fruit to the water to provide flavor or a marked water bottle to give you goals to hit throughout the day. EAT A HEALTHY DIET Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help support the immune system by providing your body the central nutrients it needs to function properly. The immune system protects the body from infection, so giving the immune system the power it needs to defend the body can help keep you healthy during the flu season. The flu is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets that are produced when speaking, sneezing, or coughing like the coronavirus. Adding these steps in addition to CDC guidance to prevent the spread of coronavirus, like wearing a mask and social distancing, will help keep you healthy through the end of flu season. Dr. Stephanie Seitz, ND, MT with Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences has extensive training in a variety of treatment modalities including homeopathy, botanical medicine, clinical nutrition and acupuncture.

Dispelling Heart Disease Myths During American Heart Month By Nikhil Iyengar, MD
H
aving trouble distinguishing fact from fiction when it comes to heart disease? You’re not alone. Here are ten common myths. 1. MYTH: Heart disease medications do more harm than good. FACT: While no one wants to take medications, they can be incredibly helpful in preventing, treating and/or managing heart disease. Before medications become treatment options, they’ve been rigorously studied, and the results have shown that those who took the medication had better health outcomes than those who did not. 2. MYTH: A lifetime of good health means I won’t get heart disease. FACT: Heart disease can build slowly, or it can develop suddenly. Past health status does not necessarily indicate future health. The reasons why some people develop disease and others don’t aren’t always explainable. It’s important to realize that our health is always changing.
3. MYTH: I can’t get heart disease if no one in my family has/had it. FACT: Diseases develop for a variety of reasons. Some are related to genetics and others are tied to environment and lifestyle factors. Not having a family history of heart disease is not a guarantee that you won’t get it. 4. MYTH: I don’t need medication since I eat a healthy diet. FACT: What’s considered a healthy diet for one person may not be for the next. The availability of medication that’s effective in lowering cholesterol has spurred the Food and Drug Administration to be more lenient when it comes to dietary restrictions on cholesterol. However, this does not mean we have permission to eat cheeseburgers at every meal. 5. MYTH: Taking medication to lower blood pressure leads to feeling sluggish. FACT: Failure to manage high blood pressure can have life-threatening consequences. It may feel great when you’re doing it, but it’s very bad for the long-term health.
The same can be said for your body when you’re living with high blood pressure. You may feel a bit tired when your blood pressure is being lowered, but you’ll reap a lot of health benefits. 6. MYTH: Quitting smoking means it no longer has an impact on your risk of heart disease. FACT: Acute heart disease risk seems to drop when a person stops smoking, but the chronic changes related to smoking likely continue to affect your body and the health of your organs and internal systems. 7. MYTH: Red wine is good for the heart and vascular system. FACT: While it was once widely believed that red wine offered some health benefits for the heart and vascular system, recent studies show no significant benefit. 8. MYTH: Women have a greater risk of developing breast cancer than heart disease. FACT: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cite heart disease as the No. 1 cause of death among women in the U.S.
A woman’s cycling hormones provide protective health benefits, but once a woman goes through menopause her risk of heart disease becomes higher than a man’s. 9. MYTH: Procedures to fix a heart problem means no further treatment is needed. FACT: Procedures such as stent placement or bypass surgery are done to correct an acute manifestation of a chronic condition. Preventing future acute episodes requires a mix of exercise, diet and medication. 10. MYTH: Firsthand experiences from friends, family and/or the internet offer reliable information on managing heart disease. FACT: Despite having a wealth of information about heart disease prevention and treatment at your fingertips, nothing is more beneficial than input from a physician who knows you and is invested in helping you live a longer, healthier life. Work with a trusted health professional to make sure the information you’re getting is current and that your care plan is being guided by an expert in the field.

New Limit Soon To be Imposed on Homeowners That Want to Go Solar By Erick O’Donnell
E
ver since the 1980s,when scientists first start to warn publicly of the dangers posed by global warming, the need to replace our carbon-belching system of power generation with clean renewables has been inherently urgent. One might think the fate of our planet’s eco system – not to mention the human populations that depend on their stability – should suffice to nudge people into embracing solar energy, the planet’s most abundant potential power source, yet regulators and lawmakers seems determined to come up with ever-more-creative ways of adding artificial urgency to the choice to go solar. Since the Arizona Corporation Commission voted in favor of APS’ 2016 request to pay owners of rooftop solar less for their power than what they sell it for, thereby initiating a new regime in steadily falling annual compensation for solar customers, that urgency has been relative: Do I want great financial rewards this year or just good ones next year? But, with a new rule going into effect soon, homeowners now face an absolute barrier to access that depends on the total power being generated by solar panels in their community, with no certainty over how soon they will indefinitely shut out of the opportunity to go solar. The new rule limits the proportion of solar-generated electricity allowed to exist within an area served by a substation to 15 percent of its peak capacity. That means that once 15 percent of a service area’s total electric current is supplied by rooftop solar, everyone else who might want to go solar may be left out in the cold. The rule technically went into effect February 2020, but implementation has varied somewhat by utility; for example,Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has already started screening applications to determine whether their areas are still eligible for new solar installation, but APS has yet to announce an actual start date. Val Berechet, president of Sunsolar Solutions, a leading local solar sales and

installation company, is urging his sales force to emphasis the urgency of going solar now before areas get effectively locked out. When TEP began implementing this new screening and review process last year, dozens of homeowners were denied their solar applications with the utility, even after having already signed up to have solar installed on their homes. Once the new policy is put in place with other Arizona utilities, it is expected that other areas of Arizona will hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity. Some areas served by APS are sure to be at their allowed imposed limit as soon as the utility starts evaluating applications under the new rule. Buckeye and North Peoria are especially saturated with rooftop solar, Berechet said.“It’s a really bad situation honestly, for both homeowners and everyone in the solar industry,” Berechet said.“It’s almost surreal. We have one customer who just last week was permitted by the city to have their solar system installed,” he said.“Tomorrow, we have to call this customer and cancel their project because the utility denied his solar application due to this new rule.” The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the second highest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to U.S. Energy Information Agency. Yet state regulatory decisions have proven to be a drag on solar’s expansion in what should be one of the most favorable environments for the technology. Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association shows yearly residential installation rising steadily from 2010 to 2017 (the year the state’s utilities started paying less for solar-generated electricity than what they sell it for) and slowing declining or stagnating in the years following. Only time will tell how this new restriction will affect solar energy’s future in Arizona.

Upcycling: The Latest Local Trend to Help Reduce Waste and Save Money By Emma Wolff
D
uring the craziness of 2020, many homeowners found themselves spending more time at home. This trend led to a boom in home renovations throughout the year. According to CNBC, there was a 58% increase in home improvement projects across the U.S. last year. This rang true for Justine Renee, owner of Desert Dixie Design. She found a way to remodel her home and repurpose furniture while saving money, sustaining the environment, and creating new must-have pieces through upcycling. Upcycling is the process of turning old, unused objects into new products with greater quality, artistic value and a revitalized purpose. Anything in need of revamping can be upcycled. For example, bedroom furniture, kitchen tables, cabinets, antiques, wall decor or garden items can be transformed into something entirely new. “Through upcycling, you can save thousands of dollars by remodeling your old items rather than buying brand new furniture,” says Renee. “You are also doing the environment a favor by recycling your resources instead of throwing them in a landfill. There are a ton of benefits to learning how to upcycle.” Renee began upcycling as a hobby, but recently started her business, Desert Dixie Design, as a fulltime operation. Her most requested projects are remodeling bedroom furniture, kitchen tables and chairs. However, the renovations and refurbishments do not have to stop there. Renee can work her creative magic and design unique, original pieces of furniture out of anything. For example, she recently turned an old television set into an adorable cat bed. She encourages locals to learn how to upcycle themselves or outsource their upcycling projects to a professional. “In upcycling, there are times of trial and error, but as long as you’re patient, willing to learn and having fun, anyone can do it,” she says. “You don’t need professional training to upcycle. I learned most of what I know by doing research
and watching YouTube videos. And, if you have a question, there is a supportive upcycling community ready to provide any answers you need.” Renee recommends beginners start by taking on small projects and working up to larger or more complicated furniture renovations. By upcycling, people can get one-of-a-kind items without spending a lot of money. Rather than buying new, expensive furniture, upcycling can transform outdated objects into modern and beautiful pieces. Upcycling also has enormous environmental benefits. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, by reusing materials, people are reducing the strain on valuable resources such as fuel, forests and water supplies. It also aids in eliminating greenhouse gas emissions, reducing landfill waste and saving energy. By upcycling, people are helping the planet, reducing their carbon footprint and saving money. In order to learn more about upcycling, check out your local home improvement stores and online upcycling resources. Home How to Properly Care For Your New Wood Pellet Smoker Grill Contributed by BBQ Island
M
any people are saying goodbye to their gas and charcoal grills and opting to purchase a wood pellet smoker grill instead. A wood pellet smoker grill is very versatile — you can expect delicious food, whether you want to smoke a brisket over the course of many hours or grill up some burgers for a quick dinner. While a wood pellet smoker grill is a great investment, a quality model can be expensive. Therefore, if you spend money to buy a brand new wood pellet smoker grill, you are sure to want to be able to use it for as long as possible. Use the following tips to help you properly maintain your wood pellet smoker grill so you can use it to prepare delectable food for years to come. KEEP YOUR WOOD PELLET SMOKER GRILL DRY Once you set up your new smoker grill it is important to keep it dry at all times. If moisture builds up inside the smoker grill, the wood pellets that fuel it will turn to mush and then cause a serious blockage when they dry out. When you’re not using your wood pellet smoker grill, you should keep it covered to help ensure that it never gets wet while outside. Your best bet is to purchase a cover that is designed for the smoker grill model that you have.
STAY ON TOP OF CLEANING In order to ensure that your wood pellet smoker grill functions properly, it needs to be cleaned regularly. Regular cleaning will also prevent your food from being contaminated with soot, tar and other debris that can build up inside the grill if it is not cleaned after use. Vacuuming out the firebox for any ash is a must every few cooking sessions. Before cleaning your smoker grill, make sure that the grill is cold and has not been used recently. You can use dish soap and water to clean the grill rack. Also, make sure that you empty the drip pan and scrub the grease shoot. Allow your smoker grill to dry completely before you use it again.
DO VISUAL INSPECTIONS Each time you use your wood pellet smoker grill, it is a good idea to do a visual inspection. Pay careful attention to the condition of the paint on the outside of the smoker grill. If you notice that there are areas with peeling paint, take care of the issue promptly. Failure to address peeling paint can lead to your smoker grill rusting, decreasing its usable lifespan. Is Your Home The Right Fit For You? By Frank May
B
ecause of the pandemic, recent statistics show that more than 41 percent of American workers are currently working from home. Some of you may already have a space set up for a home office, and it hasn’t been a big transition for you. I know others have had to alter how they live significantly, such as giving up their dining room or modifying a bedroom for an office. This is fine for now. Or is it? I’M READY TO MAKE A MOVE. Every situation is different for the individual. Some would rather move and start fresh with a home that they can customize on their own. It is because, as I’ve said, month after month since the pandemic began, the market is hot! In fact, it’s so hot, if you read last month’s article, you can see that the market year over year showed significant increases in your equity. There are many ways to sell a home—instant cash offers, traditional sale, etc. We can help you with any of them, but they ultimately depend on your needs.
I STILL LOVE MY HOME AND DON’T WANT TO MOVE. Although it seems like I want to talk to you about selling your home, this isn’t why I am writing this piece. I want to talk about what happens if you don’t want to sell. I’m so glad you love your home, neighborhood, schools, or whatever it may be that is anchoring you to your current living situation. If you are like me, you want your home to be your sanctuary now more so than ever. Times are changing, and we are here to tell you your home can change with you. I have clients that called us over the summer to talk about selling and buying F T a new build. They are not quite ready to sell and want to spend a few years living in their home while they build. We discussed some options for them, and ultimately, they decided that they wanted to do a few renovations to the house to live comfortably for the next few years before building their forever home. Like many in this zip code, their home was built during the height of the Tuscan design era; beautifully ornate design and heavy details throughout. They are tired
M
of the weight of this style and felt it was time for an update. Their concern was: How do we update the home without losing the Tuscan style’s overall aesthetic while losing some of the weight? WHO DO YOU CALL? We offered a designer we have worked with to come in and discuss some options for them. They voiced their wants, needs and concerns with updating the style. Ultimately, they could get an updated home that feels light and airy yet isn’t competing in Tuscan’s design style to the popular white/ grey modern. Their home should be completed by the time this article lands in your hands, and I cannot tell you how much I love their new look. Sometimes it takes a third party to come in and give you insight on how to update or rework your home so that it functions for you in your current situation. I am sure you have been in a position before where you couldn’t see the change needed until someone came in and showed you how to optimize the space. We are always happy to help you with your home needs, be it

Local wineries match their best bottles with their favorite Girl Scout cookies DO-SI-DOS AND ZINFANDEL Crunchy oatmeal and creamy peanut butter filling combine in these luscious sandwich-style cookies. Given the peanut butter, one might be tempted to try another port— like with the Tagalongs—but given the depth of flavor that the oatmeal provides, first try them with the 2019 Javelina Leap Zinfandel or its friend, the 2019 Prospectors Blend, which is 50% Zinfandel luscious from start to finish.
By Alison Bailin Batz NOW THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH, GIRL SCOUTS IN ARIZONA ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE LARGEST GIRL-LED ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM IN THE WORLD: THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM. Need a reason to splurge on a few extra boxes this year? Try pairing them with Arizona-made wines. THIN MINTS AND CABERNET SAUVIGNON Likely, these mint-flavored (and vegan) chocolate-coated cookies don’t need an introduction. Whether enjoying from the box or out of the freezer, these classics need a wine that can stand up to the mint. Carlson Creek’s 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-bodied, well-balanced bottle with clove and vanilla aromatics and cherry on the palate, does the job. TAGALONGS AND PORT These heavenly layers of peanut butter with a rich, chocolaty coating also need a red. Chateau Tumbleweed has a port-style wine called Fort Stinkbeast that is ideal. It got the name because during fermentation it smelled of cough syrup. Thankfully, the final result is less medicinal and more baking spices and brandy, making it a perfect marriage of flavors with chocolate and peanut butter.
LEMON-UPS AND VIOGNIER Many pair these deliciously crispy cookies bursting with bright citrus flavor with pinot grigio. And while a delightful duo, consider a crisp viognier. We love LDV Winery 2015 Sky Island Viognier. Plus, it is made by a local couple, so perfect for Valentine’s Day! SAMOAS AND SYRAH One’s taste buds are always in for a treat when enjoying Samoas, with their caramel and toasted coconut, not to mention drizzle of chocolate. Truth be told, most red wines pair with this crowd pleaser, but we tend toward Syrah the most, especially the velvety Heart Wood Cellars 2018 Syrah. As with LDV, it is also a labor of love from a local couple. GIRL SCOUT S’MORES AND MERLOT There isn’t much better than these graham cracker-
flavored sandwich cookies with creamy chocolate and marshmallow filling. Merlot, notably Alcantara Vineyards 2018 Merlot, is the perfect pairing as it is as smooth as the cookie is complex. TREFOILS AND CHARDONNAY Buttery with balanced sweetness, these shortbread cookies and chardonnay are made for each other! Grab a bottle of 2018 Pillsbury Wine Company Chardonnay, with its delicate white Burgundy style estate grown wine has hints of white flower, shortbread, and citrus, for the win here.
