PEORIA CITY COUNCIL APPOINTS VICE MAYOR AND MAYOR PRO TEM PEORIA MAYOR CATHY CARLAT AND CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPOINTED COUNCILMEMBER MICHAEL FINN TO SERVE AS VICE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER JON EDWARDS TO SERVE AS MAYOR PRO TEM FOR ONE YEAR TERMS, WHICH BEGAN ON JAN. 7. Previously, Councilmember Bridget Binsbacher served as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Vicki Hunt served as Mayor Pro Tem. “The appointment of these positions is critically important as we take care to protect Peoria residents from any lapse in accountable leadership and proper representation,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “I am thankful that Vice Mayor Finn and Mayor Pro Tem Edwards stepped up to represent our community in these important positions; and I am grateful for the tireless work and extra responsibilities that Councilmembers Binsbacher and Hunt took on over the past year.”

The appointment of both positions is pursuant to City Charter, which states Council shall designate one of its members as Vice Mayor and a separate member as Mayor Pro Tem. Both positions serve in such capacity at the pleasure of Council and at terms established by City Council. The Vice Mayor performs the duties of the Mayor during his/her absence or disability. This is a succession position in the case of the Mayor’s permanent absence. The Mayor Pro Tem performs the duties of the Mayor during the absence of both the Mayor and the Vice Mayor.

CITY OF PEORIA NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS PROGRAM NOW OPEN THE CITY OF PEORIA’S NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ASSIST HOAS WITH PROJECTS THAT ENGAGE, REVITALIZE AND/ OR PROVIDE SAFETY TO THE COMMUNITY. The neighborhoodbased projects should bring residents together, build community and establish a positive identity.

Those who are active partners in their community, and interested in improving the quality of life in their neighborhoods, are encouraged to apply. Up to $10,000 may be awarded toward eligible projects.

RESTRICTIONS/EXCEPTIONS AND SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES Proposed projects cannot already be in process or completed. Projects

must still be in the planning stages or clearly divided into stages at the time of planning. Stages not completed are eligible. No administrative funding will be provided to any community. No funding will be provided for ongoing services and/ or maintenance projects to existing amenities. Normally, these are (or should be) covered by monthly assessments. Cannot be a for-profit community (i.e. most apartments and commercial businesses). Proposed projects on City owned property will be assessed on a case-by-case basis (e.g., property in City owned rightof-way).

Improvements cannot be made on County property or outside the City limits. Grant requests must be for

the addition of new features and not the replacement of existing features.

HOA’s applying for funding must be under Resident Board control (may be utilizing a management company) and not still under the control of the developer (or builder). The Resident Board must have been under control of the community for a minimum of one (1) year prior to applying for assistance. A member from the Resident Board must attend the HOA Academy in March 2020 if their application is successful.

PUTTING AN END TO ROBOCALLS WITH THE TRACED ACT

I AM EXCITED TO REPORT CONGRESS HAS FINALLY PASSED THE TELEPHONE ROBOCALL ABUSE CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT AND DETERRENCE (TRACED) ACT, LEGISLATION CREATING STRONGER AND MORE ROBUST POLICY TO COMBAT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS. Now that this legislation has been signed into law, phone companies will be held responsible for verifying calls, and criminals working behind illicit robocalls will be held accountable.

I am proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to accomplish by working across party lines to pass thoughtful and effective legislation, and I am grateful to have been a part of this effort. To take greater preventive measures, I have included below links to resources for you to use to learn more about what Cox Communications in Arizona is doing and information from the National Do Not Call Registry about how you can stop receiving unwanted calls.

If you are a Cox Communications customer, they are providing free access for you to a third-party app called NoMoRoBo. This app can be set up

easily at cox.com/residential/support/setting-upnomorobo.html

To add your number to the do not call registry, visit the National Do Not Call Registry online at donotcall.gov.

For more information on how the do not call registry works, the steps to add your number to the list, and how to report a robocall, you can visit www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0108-national-donot-call-registry. Alternatively, you can call 1-888382-1222, but you must call from the telephone number you would like to add to the list.

Robocalls have become an incessant problem faced by the people of Arizona. These calls are likely telecommunications providers or can entail fraudulent activity. Do not call lists are proving to be ineffective, and I have been working to advocate for increased transparency and higher penalties for unauthorized calls. After introduction, I knew I needed to co-sponsor the TRACED Act because it was strong, bipartisan legislation that would provide a solution from Arizonans. This legislation increases the authority of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand civil penalties of up to $10,000 dollars for telemarketers who violate legal call restrictions and accommodates the FCC by allowing more time to administer these laws. It also puts legal responsibility on telephone companies to verify incoming phone calls. yourupperwestsider.com

BE BALLOT READY FOR 2020 ELECTIONS WITH NEW MARICOPA COUNTY WEBSITE MARICOPA COUNTY VOTERS NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTIONS IN 2020: BEBALLOTREADY.VOTE. Voters can make changes to their voter information, find what upcoming elections they are eligible for, sign up for text alerts, explore the new ballot style and more.

The Maricopa County Elections Department and Maricopa County Recorder’s Office launched the website with a new campaign to educate voters about the March 17 Democratic Presidential Preference Election and how to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. Ads will run in both English and Spanish across a variety of platforms.

The County is investing in voter education to improve the voter experience. A key piece of this campaign is to inform voters that only registered

Democrats can participate in the Presidential Preference Election on March 17.

“We are expecting historic voter turnout in 2020, so it’s important that we do everything we can to make sure voters are informed about upcoming elections,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman, District 3.

“Be Ballot Ready is an easy way for residents to find everything they need from looking up whether they are registered to vote, to when’s their next election, and what’s on their ballot.”

The campaign will also introduce a new mascot “Phil the Ballot.” Modeled after the county’s new oval ballot style, “Phil the Ballot” will encourage voters to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020.

“I am excited to introduce voters to ‘Phil the Ballot.’

We hope this character will get voters excited and

engaged with the election,” said Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. “There is a lot of important information that voters need to know about the elections, and Phil can help voters Be Ballot Ready.”

Kicking off the 2020 election season, Tempe and Chandler are holding citywide elections on March 10. The following week, registered Democrats throughout Maricopa County have the opportunity to vote in the Democratic Presidential Preference Election on March 17. Because the Presidential Preference Election is not a primary, registered independents are not eligible to vote. The Republican and Libertarian parties have opted out of holding a preference election. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: PLAN FOR CLOSURES ON LOOP 303 FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WILL BE DOING CONSTRUCTION ON LOOP 303 FROM THE US 60 TO I-17 IN PHOENIX, PEORIA AND SURPRISE. The work consists of installing closed circuit television cameras, dynamic message signs, mainline and ramp detection system, thermal cameras, fiber optic network infrastructure, power services and related components. This project is primarily for wrong-way driver detection.

Motorists who use the Loop 303 (Bob Stump Memorial Parkway) in the Northwest Valley should plan for closures and restrictions over the next several months - as the Arizona Department of Transportation begins a technology-improvement project.

ADOT advises drivers to allow extra travel time while the closures are in place.

Crews began installing in-pavement traffic-flow sensors - also referred to as loop detectors - which provide a continuous stream of traffic data that’s used to monitor travel conditions, and help plan for future infrastructure improvements. Over the next several months, the project also will include installation of

closed-circuit traffic cameras, thermal-detection cameras and electronic message signs.

The project encompasses nearly 10 miles of the Loop 303 (Bob Stump Memorial Parkway) in the city of Surprise. The $4.6 million project is occurring primarily between the US 60 (Grand Avenue) and the Northern Parkway, but other sections of the Loop 303 could be affected.

The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety on the Loop 303. Major project elements include: • Installation of thermal detection cameras at Peoria Avenue and Cactus, Waddell, Greenway and Bell roads.

• Installation of 10 closed-circuit television cameras which enable ADOT to monitor travel conditions.

• Installation of five overhead signs which allow ADOT to provide drivers with information such as travel times; crashes along the route; upcoming construction work; and safety messages.

What to Expect • Loop 303 and several on- and offramps will be restricted or closed while work is underway.

scheduled to occur within the project boundaries and in areas north and south of the project area.

• Plan for delays and detours; plan to use alternate routes at times.

• Work that will impact travelers will be scheduled during overnight hours and on weekends.

Unless otherwise indicated, work that requires closures will not be scheduled on weekdays during daytime hours.

• Alternate freeways to consider for north-south travel include the Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Interstate 17 (Black Canyon Highway).

LOCAL BUSINESSES HELP STUDENTS FIND EMPLOYMENT SUCCESS A UNIQUE PROGRAM HAS BROUGHT TOGETHER DEER VALLEY’S SMALL BUSINESSES WITH STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES TO GIVE STUDENTS SKILLS FOR SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT LONG INTO THE FUTURE. Individuals with disabilities are employed at far lower rates than those without. In the state of Arizona, the employment rates for individuals with disabilities is 34.1 percent, compared to 72.6 percent for those without.

The Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) Transition from School to Work (TSW) Program provides students with career exploration, work-based learning opportunities, assistance with job searches, and more. “In developing partnerships with community businesses, our students gain hands-on real world skills in the natural employment setting. Senior Nina Coppola said, “This experience teaches me how to work as a team member, helps me sharpen my customer service skills and gives me real life experience I will be able to use in the future.”

“The students are able to demonstrate skills that we work on in the classroom. The value in these business partnerships is that students are also exposed to new skills that they can only learn in a work setting,” said TSW Senior Teacher Allison Caylor.

“I feel like my self-esteem and confidence have increased. We are providing a service the teachers enjoy, and that makes me feel happy,” said Coppola.

USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER SET TO OPEN IN FEBRUARY 2020 THE SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY (SRPMIC) IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE PUBLIC OPENING OF THE USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER ON FEBRUARY 22.

The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River, located at 7455 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale, honors the brave individuals that served aboard the USS Arizona that sank on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

It pays tribute to, and recognizes the individuals aboard the ship that day; sharing their stories, their efforts and their sacrifice. The Salt River Indian Community became the recipient of a large part of the superstructure of the USS Arizona (BB-39), identified as the original Boat House, and built the

Gardens around it. The Boat House relic was part of the original memorial built at Pearl Harbor in 1951 and is the largest and only piece ever given to a tribal community.

“It is a great honor that the land of the O’odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa) will be the final resting place and home to the Boat House relic of the USS Arizona,” said Martin Harvier, President, SRPMIC. “The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River as a whole, will honor the brave soldiers who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and all military veterans who have served our great country.”

In 2007, an American flag flown over the USS Arizona Memorial was awarded to the SRPMIC and

the American Legion Bushmaster Post 114. Today, it is kept at the American Legion Bushmaster post with an annual “Breathing of the Flag Ceremony” that takes place during the SRPMIC Pearl Harbor Day event as a fine tribute to all soldiers. The honor of receiving a retired flag started a journey that will forever change the landscape of SRPMIC and Arizona.

The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River spans the exact length and width of the USS Arizona with over 1,500 commemorative columns, outlining the actual perimeter of the USS Arizona. The project extends across the entry drive of Salt River Fields to the north and juts into the lake on the south. Each column is representative of a life aboard the ship that day.

In addition, there are gaps within the column outline representing an individual who survived the attack.

As the day ends, each column will subtly glow with light, transforming the memorial at night representing each individual as a light and that their light will continue to go on and stand through the test of time.

The Gardens will be open daily from dawn until dusk and is open to the public. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is proud to honor all Veterans and takes pride in sharing the stories of some of those aboard the USS Arizona. The public opening of the Gardens will coincide with Spring Training Opening Day at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, which will also be Veterans Appreciation Day at the Fields.

PEORIA POLICE HOST MOTORCYCLE SAFETY EVENT FEBRUARY 8 ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, THE PEORIA POLICE DEPARTMENT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF HIGHWAY SAFETY IS PROUD TO HOST AN INTERACTIVE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY CLASS. There is no charge for this one-day class and it is open to the public.

The program will consist of a short classroom discussion to cover safe riding habits and overall motorcycle safety followed by hands-on course instruction. During the riding portion of the course, critical riding skills will be reinforced to promote the optimal response to dangerous riding situations. Riders must have a valid driver’s license and a current motorcycle endorsement. Riders will NOT obtain a motorcycle endorsement in this course.

In addition to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Peoria Police have also partnered with Arrowhead Harley Davidson, Ride Now Powersports, Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation and the Helmet Center who will be available to provide motorcycle safety product demonstrations.

Motorcycle riders wishing to apply for this course can fill out a short application online at PeoriaAZ.gov/MotorcycleClass, and selected participants will be notified prior to the class. Seating is limited and program participants will be selected based upon application screening.

FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH: SHOEBOX MINISTRY

M

ost of us take soap and shampoo for granted. Our hands are clean, teeth brushed, and our faces washed. Sadly, for far too many of our neighbors, this is not the case.

For kids, school attendance, academic achievement, positive peer relationships, confidence, a sense of control, and health all increase with good hygiene.

Since 1988, those at Shoebox Ministry have made it their sole mission to provide hygiene items to neighbors in need through their network of over 30 nonprofit agencies, all of whom are local to the Greater Phoenix area.

These agencies distribute their hygiene kits to their clients who are adults and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence survivors, people in recovery, and others who need, but cannot afford, hygiene items. For many adults, having the opportunity to maintain their personal hygiene means that a homeless individual may have a chance at being offered employment, setting them on a path to become independent and productive members of society once again.

Lee Humes, founder of one of their nonprofit partners, Deep Within, and Shoebox hygiene kits recipient himself over 20 years ago, said “Shoebox Ministry and the personal hygiene items represented a new beginning in my life and my recovery, and gave me a fresh start with increased confidence to continue my life - and my journey.”

While the government-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds provides money for food, it never allows for the purchase of basic hygiene items. Shoebox fills this gap in our community, helping to alleviate the burden of having to choose or go without.

oming off a record-breaking outcome in 2019 when Arizona Gives Day raised $3.6 million for nonprofits across the state, registration and re-enrollment is now open for Arizona nonprofits interested in participating in the 2020, 24-hour online fundraising event, set for April 7.

Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously, creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all.

Re-enrollment is required annually and can be completed at www.AzGives.org before March 2. Registration deadline for new nonprofits is February 24. Since 2013, Arizona Gives Day has raised more than $17 million for nonprofits statewide.

Presented by FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good” Arizona Gives Day is hosted by the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits and the Arizona Grantmakers Forum.

he human body is a complex mechanism, where muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments all work together as one. The more effective the components of the body are, the better movement in activities of daily living, which can lead to a better quality of life.

Q: What Does Functional Strength Training Mean?

A: The goal of a functional strength training is to practice physical activity that translates to actions we do every day. These movements include being able to get out of bed, standing from a seated position, opening the refrigerator door, or reaching for a glass from the kitchen cabinet.

Q: What Are the Best Functional Strength Training Exercises?

A: There are countless functional strength exercises we can perform to improve our health and wellbeing.

The following four exercises focus on strengthening common muscles used in daily life.

1. Good Morning – This is a great exercise demonstrating a hip hinge movement pattern. When you lean over to pick something off the ground, you are performing this same movement. Good mornings help provide resistance for the hamstrings to avoid unnecessary lower back stress.

t’s February, which in Arizona means prime golf season. Ranked as the second “golfiest” state in the union by Golf Magazine (only Florida ranks higher), our state hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and is home to seven of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses.

Our stunning desert and mountain views serve as a backdrop to a world class golf experience, and we can’t think of a better location to introduce the game of golf to your youngsters.

There are many kid-friendly golfing facilities, camps, and training resources available in the Valley of the Sun.

any sport is to have fun. Golf is no exception. When you take your kids out to the course, rather than focusing on developing the proper swing and learning the fundamentals right away, let them enjoy just whacking the ball around and being creative.

Experts recommend that adults focus on having fun with golf initially, rather than trying to develop a great swing or technical ability, so that your kids will be more likely to want to go to the course with you again. Playing frequently is the biggest key to developing a golfer; learning proper technique will come as you child’s excitement for playing golf grows.

Here are a few tips for getting your kids started on the right foot when you introduce them to golf.

It’s also a good idea to start with the short game when you’re getting kids interested in golf. It can be hard for small children to get a golf ball into the air, but almost anyone can putt.

Take your kids to play mini-golf, or to the driving range to practice and learn about the game. Also, take time to teach them about golfing rules and etiquette while you play, and emphasize that this is a fun activity – there should be no pressure, even if they can’t hit the ball very well.

TEACHING THE GAME AND KEEPING IT FUN The most important thing to remember when teaching kids how to play

HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Before you head out, be sure that you are prepared for your time out on the course. Wear sunscreen, hats, and the proper attire required by the course you plan to play on, and plan ahead for water, weather, and snacks. One of the most important things to think about is kidsized equipment. Many experts say that a putter is the best choice as a kid’s first club, then a 9-iron training club because it is fun and easy for kids to hit the ball in the air off of a tee.

The weight and length of clubs makes a difference in a youngster’s ability to swing the club, so take time to visit a local golf store or pro shop to make sure your child’s clubs fit properly as they grow and develop. But a word of advice: golf equipment can be very expensive, so save your money until you know that golf is a good fit for your kid. Many instructors and courses have loaner equipment that your child can use until they start getting excited about playing on a regular basis.

hen selling your home, receiving multiple offers is the ideal situation. With fewer homes available in the Upper West Side market (look at the 2019 stats from the last issue), multiple offers are more likely than you might think. There are a few things to keep in mind when reviewing the offers.

The following tips will help you to evaluate the best offers and decide without emotion which offer is best for you.

IDEAL BUYER Don’t get distracted by dollar signs. Sometimes the highest offer isn’t coming from the best buyer. The ideal buyer is definitely someone who has gone through the house versus someone making an offer sight unseen. This buyer is likely pre-qualified by a great mortgage company, already working with a smart agent, and has been searching for the perfect home for some time.

IS YOUR AGENT A GOOD COMMUNICATOR? Your agent should be communicating with all potential buyer’s agents. Their job is to inform them that there are multiple offers on the table and request that they provide their “best” offer. It seems like a no-brainer, but your agent needs to let them know what your deadline is to review all highest and best offers.

A

s early as it is into 2020, people are already thinking about tax time - and with good reason, as April 15th will be here soon! But armed with some information, there is no need to dread tax day. Here are some of the more important items to be aware of and what to take advantage of this tax season.

The big new law to note that affects virtually every retirement-saver in America (especially if you have money inside of an IRA), is the SECURE Act (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancements Act) of 2019. The condensed version of this new law is that it dramatically affects how your money is spent after you pass away, which forces you to spend it faster, regardless of your wishes.

There are solutions to overcome and take advantage of this, including: 1) You have until “Tax Day” to make a contribution to your IRA for either the 2019 or the 2020 tax year. For both a Traditional as well as the ROTH IRA, the contribution limits are $5,500 if age 49 or younger, and an $1,000 additional “catch-up” provision if aged 50 and older.

2) Take advantage of a Health Savings Account (“HSA”) - these are tax-advantaged savings vehicles that help people with high-deductible health care plans set money aside on a tax-favorable basis for “out of pocket medical expenses.”

The Contribution Limits are $3,500 each for Individuals or $7,000 for a family. Contributions to an HSA are tax deductible (it’s right on the first page of your 1040 form as an adjustment to income). You don’t even have to mark them as an itemized deduction for medical expenses.

3) Take advantage of Tax Credits. Tax Credits reduce the amount of income you owe the IRS. Common credits are the Earned Income Tax Credit, The Child Tax Credit or the American Opportunity Tax Credit for students or parents in college.

4) File an extension. Should you need more time to file your tax return, filing an extension can help. It does not, however, negate the responsibility to pay your debt by April 15 of each year.

5) Be sure to take advantage of the right deduction strategy. Deductions are the expenses you incur throughout each year that you are allowed to deduct (subtract) from your Taxable Income. You’ll either “itemize” your deductions (adding-up your actual 2019 receipts) OR you’ll choose the Standard Deduction with a “pre-set” dollar amount. Check with your taxadvisor for exact amounts. You’ll obviously want to choose the deduction strategy that has the most deductionimpact for your situation.

6) Take some time to also learn about the new law that went into effect that changes the Required Minimum Distribution (“RMD”) age, especially if you’re nearing age 70 already. This affects you!

7) Another new law introduces and allows for the addition of certain types of Annuities into existing 401k plans.

These are excellent tools that can guarantee a stream of income that can last for your entire retirement. But be aware, there are good ones and certainly bad ones.

I love animals and when I first started out, it felt like that was enough. Having left the corporate world where I was part of an operations team and managed many projects, I knew my organizational skills were good. Having a love for animals and being organized seemed like a great combination for success. However, I quickly realized that there was more to this business. Pet sitters are much more than just a person you call to let your dog out. We need to be educated in so many different areas from knowing what to look for in an animal’s behavior, different care for different kinds of pets and even knowledge on how to run an honest and successful business. Having the proper insurance and licensing is something I learned along the way as well and it is an important thing for you as the client to consider when you are hiring someone to look after your furry family members.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… music! I love attending concerts and any opportunity to listen to music.

ay out west, along the Colorado River, the “west coast” of Arizona stretches from north of Hoover Dam to just south of Yuma and the border of Mexico. Although the summers can be even hotter than Phoenix, winter is a great time of year to visit, and the Colorado River and Lake Havasu provide a cool getaway for every water enthusiast all year round. Here are a few places we recommend you check out when you head for Western Arizona.

LAKE MEAD AND THE HOOVER DAM Built in 1936, the Hoover Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country today and provides hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. One of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, the immense dam spans the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, creating Lake Mead along the Colorado River.

Visitors can see the dam up close by driving down a winding road into the canyon and parking to take a tour of the historic art deco structure.

The byproduct of this fantastic feat of engineering is 700 miles of Lake Mead shoreline, an attraction for water and outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all kinds. ROUTE 66 AND GRAND CANYON WEST A bit further south as you head down I-40, you find many areas of the highway that run right along the historic Route 66, including Kingman, considered to be the heart of Route 66. Tiny towns a little east of Kingman also give you a taste of the historic Route 66, like Peach Springs or Seligman, the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.”

Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Reservation and is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West has two main locations: The West Rim, which is accessible from State Route 93 on the way to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, is the site of the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon.

The second location is Peach Springs, located along a well-preserved stretch of the historic Route 66 and is the gateway to beautiful Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon.

LAKE HAVASU Further down the Colorado River on Arizona’s border, along Highway 95, you will find the world-famous London Bridge, now a permanent resident of Lake Havasu City. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River border of California

and Arizona, this area attracts visitors with its 50 miles of pristine lake and river waterways, laid-back community, and ideal climate for people who love the water and outdoors. Lake Havasu is also home to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and many undeveloped wilderness areas along the Colorado River.

YUMA About two hours south of Lake Havasu and Parker, you’ll find Yuma, a frequent stopping point for travelers between Phoenix and San Diego. As one of the easiest spots to cross the Colorado River, Yuma developed a unique and exciting history in the Old West Arizona Territory. Visitors can also enjoy the cool waters of the river nestled in the mountainous Sonoran Desert, play in the sand dunes, and visit many historic sites throughout the city. Whether you visit the famed Yuma Territorial Prison or the Colorado River State Historic Park, you’ll enjoy a visit to the southernmost point on Arizona’s West Coast.

ROCKY POINT SEES ITS FIRST CRUISE SHIP SET SAIL

fter much anticipation and planning, the first cruise liner departed Thursday, January 9, from Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, commonly known in the United States as Rocky Point.

The Astoria Cruise Liner is owned and operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages.

“This is a major step in Rocky Point’s development and growth,” stated Keith Allen, Director of Sales of a new and contemporary condo development Encantame Towers and founding member of Peñasco Business Coalition. “With the launch of this cruise, we are hoping that Rocky Point, with its unique location on the Sea of Cortez, will be seen as a premier, local cruise ship port. It’s just another wonderful amenity added to this safe, beautiful beach town.”

The Astoria set sail on the cruise titled “Treasures of the Sea of Cortez.” Over the course of the 11-day voyage, the ship will take passengers to eight ports along the Sea of Cortez, including Topolobampo, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Bahia Loreto, Santa Rosalia, and Guaymas. The ship itself has 250 cabins and can hold around 550

people. In addition, Cruise and Maritime Voyages arranged ground transportation from Phoenix and Tucson to Rocky Point. Most of the passengers are anticipated to be Arizonans and people from surrounding western states.

UNCUT GEMS

The Safdie brothers might currently be the best directors at making an audience root for the most irredeemable characters possible. Howie Bling, played incredibly

by Adam Sandler, does almost everything wrong - constantly screwing over and hurting his family, friends, and business associates. Knowing all of that, there is something about his charm and mannerisms that make you want him to sink that half court shot. The brothers’ dark comedy and panic attack-esque filmmaking style also shines here in scenes that can make you laugh at even the most horrifying of moments. Bolstered

by Daniel Lopatin’s score and a colorful supporting cast, you’ve got an experience that feels like the lost Martin ScorseseRobert De Niro collaboration. While this film likely won’t be for everyone, I highly recommend it.

6 UNDERGROUND

This is Michael Bay without limits and that’s not necessarily good. Imagine his immature humor, over the top action and frantic editing…and then multiply it by 10. Now imagine one-dimensional characters, lazy continuity errors, obnoxious comedy and exploitation of some serious real-world horrors. None of the actors, despite being highly talented, bring anything to the table and Bay confirms that the charm of his insane style wears off after an opening 10-minute car chase scene.

At least he avoids exceeding a 2hr and 15 minutes run time.

THE GRUDGE

The most disappointing films are the ones that feel like they waste all of their good qualities. Taking the anthology format of Grudge in a new direction with an R-rating, an interesting director like Nicolas Pesce and a great cast seems like a perfect idea.

Unfortunately for the viewers, somewhere something went horribly wrong. There are no characters here, only archetypes (the haunted cops, the soon-to-be parents, etc.)

The horror consists of nothing more than jump scares. Overall, the movie doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. The worst part was that somehow, in a series where there was always a sense of dread, grief or trauma, the film continuously pulls punches leaving it flat and almost comedic. Like a horror film, 1917 makes each moment feel like the difference between life and death. The long takes aren’t there just for the sake of showing off, but for Director Sam Mendes and DP Roger Deakins to place you in the shoes of the characters.

This film mirrors real life with sudden, pivotal moments that change the course of everything, and everyone effected. The actors mesh perfectly in their roles - particularly the decision to give the minor/ supporting roles to major actors, portraying a sense of importance without taking away from the leads. The production design and looks are also incredible. My favorite nightmare is the detail given to No Man’s Land.

As a whole, 1917 was an intense, emotional experience.

While the restaurant’s name and many menu options remain, the new ownership added new menu items to include a wide range of classic and not-so-classic Italian dishes.

Known as the Home of the King Cut Lasagna and Loaded Chicago Beef, The Twisted Italian aims to offer diners creative and delicious dishes, a great wine selection and friendly service at reasonable prices. With a full bar, dine-in and carry out as well as catering options and daily happy hour and lunch specials, The Twisted Italian is the ideal place to grab a quick bite or enjoy a casual meal with the whole family.

Owned by transplants of Chicago, the

menu features dishes that are inspired by the Windy City, in addition to Italy, such as the Classic Italian Beef, Combo Beef Sausage and Classic Thin Crust Pizza. Another “twist” from the Italian inspired portion of the menu, The Twisted Italian features House Made Pierogis including Cheese and Onion with cheddar cheese, potatoes, and sautéed onions; South of the Border with ghost pepper and cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, and jalapenos; Meatball with ricotta and mozzarella cheese served with marinara.

Diners can enjoy starters like Calamari, Bruschetta in a variety of flavors including Garlic Tomato; Berries with Goat Cheese and Balsamic Glaze; and Bacon Cream with hot giardiniera cream cheese with bacon and melted cheddar; Meatball Sliders; Fried Mozzarella; and Twisted Stromboli featuring rolled pizza dough filled with salami, capicola, pepperoni, melted provolone and mozzarella and poppy seed sauce.

The Soups and Salads portion of the menu includes Twisted Citrus with spring mix, mandarin orange, dried cranberry, candied pecans and gorgonzola with balsamic vinaigrette; Steak and Grilled Veggie Salad topped with Beef Tenderloin Steak, crispy onion strips, mozzarella cheese with house creamy garlic dressing; or the soup of the day.

Sandwiches range from Meatball to Chicken Parmesan to the Italian Stack and entrees include the Pork Loin Chop Marsala with crispy prosciutto and provolone; the Italian Relleno with Fried Ravioli; the Garlic Shrimp with Scallops; and the Champagne Lobster Ravioli with Shrimp.
