THE ARIZONA MILITARY VEHICLE COLLECTOR’S CLUB (AMVCC), A PASSIONATE GROUP OF MILITARY VEHICLE ENTHUSIASTS, IS GEARING UP FOR THEIR 33RD ANNUAL ARIZONA MILITARY VEHICLE SHOW. This year’s event, a testament to the club’s commitment to preserving history, is scheduled for January 26 to 28, at the Peoria Sports Complex.
These privately-owned vehicles, meticulously restored and maintained by club members, serve as a mobile museum, honoring those who served and fought from these historical machines. The AMVCC is not just about displaying these vehicles; they actively participate in parades, veteran services, car shows, and charity events, allowing the public to see, feel, and hear the echoes of the past.
Founded in 1982, the AMVCC began as a small group of collectors passionate about military vehicles. Today, it has grown into a vibrant community of veterans and civilians alike, each dedicated to preserving and showcasing military transportation from World War I through Desert Storm and beyond. The club’s impressive collection includes Jeeps, mutts, mules, deuce-and-a-halfs, prime movers, troop
The club’s first military vehicle show, organized by Rod Shaver in a Tempe parking lot in 1984, marked the beginning of an annual tradition. Over the years, the event outgrew several locations, including the Papago Military Museum parking lot and the National Guard Gymnasium, before settling into its current home at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The 2024 show at the Peoria Sports
Complex, located at 16101 N. 83rd Ave., promises to be the most extensive yet. Visitors can expect a wide array of historic military vehicles, live demonstrations, and interactive experiences. Admission fees are set at $10 for adults, $5 for children aged 5 to 13 and veterans with ID, while active-duty military and children under 5 can attend for free. Apart from the annual show, the AMVCC is active year-round, participating in a variety of events. From elementary school “touch a truck” parties to memorial services, county fairs, parades, patriotic rallies, and veterans’ events, these vehicles and their owners are a familiar sight. The club even provides vehicles for movies, TV commercials, birthday parties, and car shows, depending on the fun and enjoyment factor of the event. The club is run by individual volunteers who maintain and operate their personally-owned military vehicles.
While there’s never a guarantee that these vintage machines or their drivers will always be available, the spirit of the club is to make every effort to participate and share their passion. For those interested in meeting the members or learning more about the club, monthly planning meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month. The meetings currently take place at the American Legion, Luke Greenway Post 1, located at 364 N. 7th Ave., in Phoenix. As the club prepares for the upcoming show in January 2024, it stands as a beacon for military history enthusiasts and a vivid reminder of the vehicles that played a crucial role in shaping our world. The Arizona Military Vehicle Collector’s Club continues to keep history alive, one restored vehicle at a time. For more information, visit armytrucks. org/mvshow.php

Cutting-Edge Technology Enhances Life for Pulmonary Patients By Lin Sue Flood
A
LS has changed John Rosso’s life, but not in the way one might imagine. This cheery-natured Scottsdale resident doesn’t focus on what he can no longer do. Instead, the 73-year-old channels his energy into pushing boundaries and overcoming challenges posed by the neurodegenerative disease.
even allows people to type sentences by focusing their eyes on one letter at a time. “John can take control of the computer, go online and interact with the world. Or he can just say whatever he pleases — like tell the dog to stop barking. It’s the difference between not being able to communicate with your family and being able to tell them I love you,” Legaspi says.
As his condition progressed and it became more difficult to speak, Rosso utilized “voice banking” to create a synthesized version of his natural speaking voice. A high-tech device uses those recordings to help Rosso vocalize his wants and needs to family, friends and his Hospice of the Valley care team.
Other machines help compensate for the muscle weakness caused by ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which makes it harder for Rosso to cough and clear his lungs. To help keep his airway clear, his hospice team has taught him to use a special respiratory cough assist device and suction machine.
“It’s a joy to see how John continues to thrive as he adapts to changes in his health,” says respiratory therapist Gretchen Stanton. “Machines like this add so much to his quality of life.”
“Think of it as a big air blower and vacuum,” explains Stanton. “The machine first pushes air into his lungs to inflate them, then powerfully sucks that air out along with any mucus. Then the suction wand can remove it and keep his airway nice and open.”
The Eye Gaze PRC has eye-tracking cameras that read whatever phrase Rosso looks at on the screen. Then he clicks a joystick to “speak it out loud.” Speech language pathologist Jeremy Legaspi says the machine

is definitely known for its innovative take on breakfast classics. Classic dishes are offered, of course, including a two-egg breakfast with two eggs any style served with a choice of potato, toast, and your choice of applewood smoked bacon, sausage links, ham steak, or maple chicken sausage, or traditional eggs benedict with thickcut ham, hollandaise sauce, English muffin, and choice of potato.
Looking for something a bit more unique? You’ll find that here as well. Some options include sweet items such as Cinnamon Roll French Toast, featuring two split cinnamon rolls dipped in cinnamon vanilla custard, fresh orange royal icing, and powdered sugar. They also serve famous golden waffle dogs, consisting of three hearty sausage links, dipped in vanilla waffle batter, then fried to a golden brown. If savory is more your style, there are those options on
the menu as well. There is Over Easy’s take on chicken fried steak, which is a tender steak, scratch-made country gravy, two eggs, and choice of potato and toast. They also offer lunch menu items including wraps, sandwiches, and salads for those looking for other-thanbreakfast options. The menu also includes a variety of beverage options including juices, coffee – both hot and iced - fountain drinks, as well as a full bar with breakfast favorites including different mimosas, bloody Marys, and their self-described ‘Brunchtails’ menu. No matter what you are looking for, there is bound to be a tasty delight for everyone. Over Easy also recently opened a location in Flagstaff and is planning on three more spots in the near future. SECRET MESSAGES Using lemon juice as invisible ink.
T
his experiment is not only educational but also adds an element of mystery and fun, as kids can write secret messages and reveal them later. It's a great way to introduce basic chemistry concepts to kids in a playful manner. Objective To learn about acidic reactions and create secret messages using lemon juice as invisible ink. Materials • Lemons (or lemon juice) • Cotton swabs or small paintbrushes • White paper • A light bulb, an iron, or a hair dryer (heat source) • Water (optional, to dilute the lemon juice) Procedure 1. Juice Extraction: Squeeze the juice out of a lemon into a bowl. For a lighter ink, dilute with a little water. 2. Writing the Message: Dip a cotton swab or a small paintbrush into the lemon juice and write a message on the white paper. Let the paper dry completely; your message will become invisible once dry. 3. Revealing the Message: Carefully hold the paper near a heat source (such as a light bulb, an iron set on low heat, or a hair dryer). The heat will cause the lemon juice to oxidize and turn brown, revealing the secret message. Scientific Background • Lemon juice is acidic and weakens paper fibers. When heated, the acid accelerates the burning of these fibers, making the message appear. • This experiment teaches about chemical reactions, particularly oxidation, and the properties of acids. Safety Notes • Be careful when using heat sources. Adult supervision is recommended, especially with younger children. • Ensure the paper is held at a safe distance from the heat source to avoid any risk of burns or fire.

“We are committed to growing and revitalizing the club for the future, which includes exploring capital improvements to the clubhouse and the prospect of building pickleball courts,” Stika continues. “The membership decided that this is not something they can do on their own; they want to make sure that whatever we do, we do it right, and so they wanted to bring in professional management.” As the fastest-growing sport and with a need for pickleball courts in the Sun City West area, Stika says they want to get the paddle game up and running at Briarwood as soon as possible, especially to attract younger members. For the first time, Stika says, “We’re removing all age restrictions in the club. Residents outside of Sun City who live within a mile or so of Briarwood have joined the club, and younger families are becoming more prevalent, too.” Andy Malone, a Briarwood member since 2019, says, “What I like best about this club is its eclectic group. We’ve got retired UPS drivers, surgeons, attorneys, postal workers. It’s a club for all walks of life.”
Benefits of Briarwood
When West Valley residents join Briarwood Country Club, a club ambassador greets and walks them through the advantages of membership. This includes the Greg Nash-designed par-72 golf course with tees ranging from 4,533 to 6,600 yards and the world-class golf shop with lessons, club fittings, and re-gripping of clubs. Plus, there’s a wide range of golfing groups to accommodate all playing abilities. There’s also a meticulously groomed practice facility with a driving range, putting green, and an additional chipping/putting area. Briarwood’s private golf experience gives members more access to scheduling tee times up to seven days in advance and under four hours per round. “When friends visit, we play at several Valley golf courses,” says Malone. “But Briarwood is our favorite, and it’s not near what we’re paying for those others. Even though it’s a shorter course than what they are used to, some of our younger members who play professional golf have joined because they claim it forces them to consider every shot.” While Briarwood Country Club offers members unlimited access to the golf course and its amenities, members say camaraderie is the intangible benefit that drew them to the club.
“BCC is like a family,” says Gloria Joyner, a member since 1994 when she and her husband bought a casita in the neighborhood to visit from Tacoma, Washington, during the winter. When her husband passed away in 1997, Joyner relocated to a home on the 13th hole in Sun City West the same year. “There are so many things to do here that it’s hard to find time to enjoy them all,” she says. “Let me count the ways: Ladies’ Bridge, Mah Jongg, swimming, dancing, fellowship, the Briarwood Travel Club, and, of course, our challenging golf course. We are fortunate to have a wonderful, friendly staff and outstanding gourmet meals.” Briarwood’s Membership and Marketing Director Michele Malo says, “Originally, we didn’t have a travel club. Now we do because so many members want to travel.” Briarwood offers a variety of women’s, men’s, and couples’ card games and a year-round heated pool. The poolside food and beverage service provides a resort atmosphere, while lockers and showers are available for members’ convenience. The social calendar includes concerts, Cork-to-Fork (an elevated wine pairing experience), holiday events, upscale beer and spirits tastings, Sunday brunch, various clubs, new member mixers, and more.
“We watch football games to celebrate New Year’s Eve,” says Malone. “My sister would have a party, but she’s like, ‘You know, the club has a party, and we should support the club.” Members can enjoy the Cactus Bar and Grill menu and views from inside or on the outdoor patio around fire pits. The club offers Sunday brunch, dinner, and live music on Friday nights. A 6,200-square-foot event venue, it can accommodate up to 400 guests for events. The club is also conveniently located near Surprise, Peoria, and Goodyear, with no community or HOA restrictions. Visit briarwoodcc.com, call 623-584-5600, or email membership@briarwoodcc.com to learn more about joining the Briarwood Country Club community. Don’t let “country club” fool you; as Malone says, “It’s the country club for noncountry clubbers.” This content is sponsored by Briarwood.

Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS… Josh Carmona (aka Crisco Kidd). I’VE LIVED IN THE AREA FOR ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the amazing people, the food scene, our Sonoran culture, and all of the great opportunities here! A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I know this will sound cliché, but there really is no typical day in my life. I think post-pandemic, most of us who juggle many roles will agree. However, as a radio personality, Realtor, nonprofit founder, and MPA/PPC student, here’s what my day looked like as of writing this: It started by taking my son to school in the early morning, followed by the gym. My goal is to be done by 8:30 a.m. Next, I went right to real estate business. I have a few clients looking to buy from out-of-state, so I am extra careful to be as thorough as possible since they aren’t here. They are depending on me to be their eyes, ears,
and more to help them find their new place to call home. Before and after lunch, I caught up with a few of my community partners for our 17th Annual Crisco’s Kids Ton of Toys and Holiday Food Drive to show my appreciation for them coming on board to support us this year. By 2 p.m., I like to be at the radio station to begin preparing for my show. Even though I am on from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (101.1 The Bounce), it takes time before and after to put together the show I do for the Valley. You can also listen to me on Pitbull’s Globalization on SiriusXM! After my show, we enjoyed a dinner with some family time after and put our son to sleep. Now, I’m on to finishing up emails and any other work I missed before I’ll spend another hour or two preparing for my final projects this semester. If I’m in bed by 2 a.m., I’m good!
movie relates to a lot of young men as they navigate through various stages of life. From the underdog, to winning, to losing (family, friendships, and professionally), and finding the “eye of the tiger” mentality again, there is something to be learned through the series.
Like I said, I’m sure all of our days look like this in some way, I’m just super thankful that I LOVE everything I get to do.
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my son. I’ve always been a self-motivated person and “go-getter” since I can remember, but the day my son was born, it unlocked a level I had never known before. Becoming a father later in life also made me more aware of how limited my time here is – he motivates me to make every minute count more.
MY FAMILY IS… ridiculous! I really don’t know how Brenda handles all of us! Along with her daughter Clarette, our son Phoenix J, and our three dogs (Zoey, Zima, and Zella) plus our extended family; we are definitely too much for most people.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a radio personality and DJ. From making the school announcements from elementary school throughout high school and throwing my own parties since 15, I always knew this was my gift and my path. To be able to accomplish my dream at such an early stage in my life is something I appreciate every day! THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… how can you NOT do Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’?”
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… unfortunately, my phones. Not because I feel the need to be on social media constantly, but because of the amount of communication and information exchanged daily.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… one of the callers on my show sharing unwanted advice that her grandmother gave her. Actually, a majority of the calls I put on the air every afternoon I would say are funny or humorous in some way!
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Rocky.” All of them. I believe each
THE PERFECT DAY IS… any day above ground granted with another opportunity to do what I do.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… besides my own, Crisco’s Kids, I love what UMOM does for individuals and families across the Valley. This is why I choose to partner with them for two of my annual events and host their annual Walk to End Homelessness. If you are not familiar, please take a few moments to visit their site – umom.org (and criscoskids.org too!). MY LIFE IS… consistently spontaneous. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… I have received some amazing gifts over the years but, hands down, my son! MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… an all-inclusive tour of every country through Central and South America and their major landmarks. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… “Do it right, do it light. Do it wrong, do it long.” – Ben Carmona (aka Pops).

A Real Estate Veteran’s Perspective on the Peculiarities of the Current Market By Frank May, Real Estate Agent
A
fter being in real estate for over 20 years, I would have to say that 2023 (and the last half of 2022) was a strange time for the market. It wasn’t as bad as the period between 2008 to 2010, but it was certainly unusual! The increase in interest rates during the latter half of 2022 and into 2023 left buyers in a void, uncertain about their options. Many were priced out of the market when the rates jumped

to over 5% in less than a year! Despite fewer buyers causing prices to drop, the monthly payments were still higher due to those elevated interest rates.
of about 0.75% in December, which should enable more buyers to qualify and potentially drive prices up even further. Great news for homeowners!
I just looked back at a floorplan in the Meadows that sold in April 2022 for $607,000, and less than a year later, the same floorplan sold for $510,000! The good news is that prices have started to rise again since hitting their lowest point. That same floorplan sold for $555,000 just a couple of months ago. This recent increase in value occurred before a significant drop in interest rates
Many homeowners have been hesitant to sell, not wanting to swap their 3% (and sometimes even lower) interest rate for an 8% rate. As interest rates continue to fall, we anticipate more sellers will enter the market, increasing inventory, which is currently in short supply. Buyers will have more options, and sellers will need to keep their homes as ‘model-like’ as possible to attract these buyers and further increase their property’s value. We all know the TSMC plant has been bringing good jobs to the area, but as you can read on the following page of this paper, a company named Amkor will be building a $2 billion site near the Commercial Core at Vistancia. This development will bring even more well-paying jobs to our area. People from around the country and the world are starting to recognize Peoria and are eager to move here! Our community continues to grow in desirability with more businesses coming to Peoria and Northern Glendale. Stay informed with Katie at

AMKOR’S $2 BILLION INVESTMENT ELEVATES PEORIA’S TECH LANDSCAPE WITH ADVANCED SEMICONDUCTOR FACILITY Photo courtesy of city of Peoria
A
mkor Technology, Inc., a leader in semiconductor packaging and test services, has announced a transformative $2 billion investment to establish an advanced packaging and test facility in Peoria. This development is set to create approximately 2,000 new jobs, significantly boosting the local economy and positioning Arizona as a pivotal player in the American semiconductor industry. Amkor, the sole U.S.-headquartered OSAT (outsourced semiconductor assembly and test) service provider with advanced packaging technology capability, plans for this facility to be the largest of its kind in the United States. This move aligns with the national effort to expand the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, a key focus for both the industry and the government. Governor Katie Hobbs praised the initiative, highlighting its impact on national security and supply chain resilience. She noted the project’s alignment with Arizona’s longstanding leadership in advanced manufacturing. Her sentiments were echoed by Giel Rutten, president and CEO of Amkor, who emphasized the company’s commitment to strengthening America’s semiconductor capabilities and supporting a robust supply chain. The new facility, spanning approximately 55 acres, will feature over 500,000 square feet of clean room space. The first phase is expected to commence production within two to three years. Amkor’s vision includes supporting key markets such as high-performance computing, automotive, and communications with high-volume, leading-edge technologies. myhyperlocalnews.com
A strategic partnership has been formed with Apple, shaping the initial capability of the Peoria facility, which will package, and test Apple’s chips produced at the nearby TSMC fab. This collaboration cements Amkor’s position in a vibrant ecosystem of semiconductor manufacturers in Arizona, including TSMC, Intel, Applied Materials, and ASML.
The Cactus 101 Business Park, located at the strategic intersection of 91st Avenue and Cactus Road, just east of the Loop 101 and north of Grand Avenue, comprises a newly built infill project. It features three buildings with a combined space of 232,881 square feet, including a 92,615-square-foot building, a 75,234-square-foot building, and a 65,032-square-foot building.
The city of Peoria, the Arizona Commerce Authority, and government authorities have shown strong support for the project, recognizing its potential to revitalize the local high-tech sector and contribute to the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area’s economic dynamism.
Representing Hopewell Development in this venture are Melissa Marks, Brian Gleason, Bonnie Halley, and Danny Schuster of Colliers in Arizona. Gleason highlighted the project’s prime location along the Loop 101 as a key factor in securing leases with these national credit companies before the construction was even completed.
Amkor’s initiative aligns with the objectives of the CHIPS and Science Act, a federal program designed to enhance U.S. competitiveness and innovation in the semiconductor industry. Amkor has applied for funding under this act, which will play a crucial role in the project’s success. Amkor’s substantial investment in Peoria not only marks a milestone in the city’s technological advancement but also signifies a crucial step in bolstering the United States’ position in the semiconductor industry, promising economic growth and enhanced national security. HOPEWELL DEVELOPMENT SECURES MAJOR LEASES AT CACTUS 101 BUSINESS PARK IN PEORIA
H
opewell Development, a Canada-based firm, has successfully secured two significant leases at the Cactus 101 Business Park in Peoria, marking a substantial advancement in the area’s business landscape. The leases, totaling nearly 100,000 square feet, have been signed with LD Products Inc. and Clopay Corp.
LD Products Inc., a leading online store for aftermarket printer ink and toner cartridges based in Long Beach, California, plans to occupy the entire 65,032-squarefoot building for more than five years. This new location in Peoria will be LD Products’ second in the metro Phoenix area and its first in the West Valley. LD Products was represented by Michael White of Savills in this transaction. Additionally, Clopay, a garage door manufacturer headquartered in Mason, Ohio, has signed a lease for nearly 30,000 square feet in the second building, leaving approximately 45,000 square feet still available. Clopay intends to use this space as its first distribution center in Arizona, further expanding its network of distribution centers across the United States. Jeff Hays and Sam Rutledge of Commercial Properties Inc. represented Clopay in this deal. These leases at Cactus 101 Business Park signify a significant boost to the local economy in Peoria and mark an important step in the development of the area as a key business hub. "The Holdovers" A grumpy boarding school professor forms a unique bond with a troubled student and the head cook over the Christmas break. It’s admirable that "The Holdovers" succeeds in recreating the look and aesthetic of the decade it is set in and inspired by. Thankfully, it's not just a superficial homage but also its own complete picture about the complicated people we call family. Paul Giamatti reminds everyone how good he truly is after staying mostly out of the spotlight, playing a gruff man who is more thoughtful than he seems. Meanwhile, Da'Vine Joy Randolph brilliantly portrays a range of emotions as a woman who has gone through an unspeakable tragedy while maintaining empathy. Newcomer Dominic Sessa elevates what could have been a clichéd “rough kid with a heart of gold” role. It’s a movie that feels familiar yet brings something fresh to the table, and that alone is worth your attention. 24 • January 2024 • UPPER WESTSIDER
"Candy Cane Lane" A father and his family race to beat a mischievous elf who brings the 12 days of Christmas to life and to win the neighborhood’s contest for best-decorated home.
"Leave the World Behind" A family’s trip to upstate New York is interrupted by the appearance of the house’s owners and signs of terror. One of the most jarring movies of the year, "Leave the World Behind" is surprisingly amateurish, especially compared to the great writer/ director Sam Esmail’s TV series, "Mr. Robot." The film hammers you with its attempts at ideas without saying anything particularly intriguing. The filmmaking is also incredibly self-indulgent, flashy for the sake of flashiness. Most of the cast delivers subpar performances, though Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali certainly do their best with what they're given. It’s the type of film that fails to be intense or engaging, instead becoming merely irritating. By the midway point, you might find yourself disinterested in the characters' fates. It’s also worth noting it features one of the most illconceived final jokes in recent cinema.
"May December" An actress becomes entangled in the lives of a couple whose controversial romance is the subject of her new movie. "May December" has been mistakenly described as camp because its camera movements, music, and uncanny tone showcase how unsettling the movie can be. You're peering into the nightmare of the predatory relationship between Gracie and Joe, portrayed convincingly by Julianne Moore’s emotionally manipulative character and Charles Melton’s portrayal of quiet suffering. Natalie Portman delivers a performance that reflects a strange obsession with the world around her, bordering on inappropriate, mirroring our culture’s odd fascination with true crime without considering its impact on those involved. Director Todd Haynes creates a palpable unease around our protagonists and their surroundings, making us feel we should look away, but we can't. It's a remarkable achievement from everyone involved.
Director Reginald Hudlin attempts to capture the spirit of the holiday season, and there is some charm to be found, particularly in the stopmotion animation. However, "Candy Cane Lane" mostly goes through the motions as a family film, dragging on too long and ending up rather dull. Eddie Murphy still manages to charm just with his smile, but one can't help but wish for more, especially after his brilliant performance in "Dolemite Is My Name." The rest of the cast shows potential in their comedic timing but isn’t given much to work with. The film is an example of a missed opportunity for what could have been an enjoyable experience.
