City Council Selects Final District Map for Peoria Information and Graphic Courtesy of the City of Peoria FOLLOWING A ROBUST, TRANSPARENT PUBLIC PROCESS, THE PEORIA CITY COUNCIL HAS ADOPTED A FINAL REDISTRICTING MAP, MAP 4, WHICH IS IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH ALL FEDERAL LAWS AND LEGAL REDISTRICTING CRITERIA. The final map was selected out of five qualifying finalist maps and will be effective for the August and November 2022 elections.

“After a robust and citizen-centric redistricting process that included eight in-person meetings, two virtual meetings, an online engagement process and online mapping software, Peoria City Council approved a new council district map,” says Mayor Cathy Carlat. “All of the maps we reviewed were submitted anonymously by the public and I am thankful for those who engaged in this important process. The final map meets all federal legal requirements and keeps communities of interest intact. I am proud to support a map that was created by our community for our community.”

The city’s Redistricting Committee coordinated a twophase public engagement process. In addition, the city made available an online mapping application that

allowed residents to create their own district maps for consideration. The second phase included nearly four weeks of public engagement to collect resident feedback on the five finalist redistricting maps.

During this outreach period, a complete summary of data on minority and population changes for each of the finalist maps was available on the redistricting website and at the in-person meetings. This included detailed boundary lines, population counts and deviations, a compactness measure, and demographic information.

Redistricting is required by federal law and pursuant to Peoria’s City Charter after a decennial census count to rebalance populations in each of Peoria’s six council districts. In addition to the legal requirements that districts must have substantially equal population, be in compliance with the Voting Rights Act and be contiguous, council unanimously approved additional criteria to assist in the process. The council-adopted criteria stated that districts should be compact, follow visible or man-made boundaries, not contain more than one master-planned, age restricted community, preserve communities of interest, and strive for continuity in office.

Mark Your Calendar: The 2022 Bulk Trash Schedule is Out THE CITY OF PEORIA HAS RELEASED THE 2022 BULK TRASH SCHEDULE. The bulk trash collection will begin on January 3 and end on December 21.

The city of Peoria provides bulk trash service twice a year to residents that receive trash and recycle services from the Peoria Solid Waste Division.

The bulk trash program provides a pick-up of large, bulky items that do not fit into residential trash containers. Acceptable items include stoves, sofas, chairs, and yard waste.

GUIDELINES FOR BULK TRASH PICK UP • All bulky items should be placed in 4 • January 2022 • UPPER WESTSIDER

the gutter/curb no later than 6 a.m. of the zone collection date.

• Do not place bulky items out more than one day in advance of zone collection date.

• Bulky items placed out after a street has been serviced or exceed the maximum collection size (approximately six feet long by four feet wide and three feet tall) will incur a charge of $50 per 30 minutes of loading time.

• Neatly place bulk trash alongside the curb in front of your property.

Do not place items on your property or the sidewalk. Do not combine bulk trash into one large community pile. Service will not be

provided if bulk trash is improperly placed, deemed unsafe to collect, or contains unacceptable items.

• Loose yard clippings and pet waste must be bagged and securely tied to be collected.

• Cut tree limbs, branches, and wood panels into three feet sections and stack in the same direction.

• Place cacti pieces in a sturdy box.

• Remove doors from appliances or secure with heavy tape.

Carson Conquers Cancer

Upper West Side PHX raises funds to support one of their own

By Michelle Talsma Everson Photo By Selena Sorensen AS THE DYNAMIC DUO BEHIND UPPER WEST SIDE PHX, A GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY MOVEMENT THAT ENCOURAGES SPECIALTY SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS TO OPEN IN THE NORTHWEST VALLEY, KATIE ROE AND KRISTI HUNTER ARE WELL-KNOWN FOR HELPING OTHERS IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. Now, Kristi’s 7-yearold daughter Carson is conquering cancer and her family could use local support to help pay for the medical bills and costs associated with battling the disease.

“Kristi is half of the Upper West Side PHX team and responsible for most of what you normally see on our social media,” Katie Roe shared on Upper West Side PHX’s popular Facebook page. “The week before Thanksgiving she [Kristi] was confronted with a parent’s worst nightmare. Her otherwise happy and healthy daughter, Carson, was unexpectedly diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery to remove a large tumor.”

After the surgery, which took place in late November, Carson began what will be nearly two months of chemotherapy.

To help the family with unexpected medical bills, Katie is managing an online fundraiser at gofundme.com/ carsonconquerscancer. Those who can are encouraged to donate to the fundraiser and/or share it on their social media pages to help spread the word. Supporters are also encouraged to use the #carsonconquerscancer hashtag on social media.

“Kristi is a West Valley native, one of the kindest people I know, and is always helping others in the community,” Roe says. “Now it is our chance to help her.”

Kristi Hunter shares that dozens of local businesses have already stepped up to help the family through this tough time. “All local all the time,” Hunter says. “We have had a village surrounding us and taking care of us through all of this.”

NORTHWEST PEORIA RESIDENTS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING A BRANDNEW EXPERIENCE WITH LOADED FRIES IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2022. Mr. Fries Man is a brand that takes pride in using freshly cooked and quality ingredients as they turn fries into full meals by incorporating protein, sauce, and other add-ons with the popular side.

“Mr. Fries Man is a fast food, casual dining restaurant with its own unique style for preparing custom fries with a variety of toppings,” says Chatiya Jones-Dean, who owns the upcoming franchise location alongside her husband Jamaal Dean. “We decided to bring this opportunity to Arizona because it has great food choices that hit your taste buds.”

Mr. Fries Man started as a family-owned underground foodie frenzy in Los Angeles.

Since then, owners Craig and Dorothy Batiste have turned it into a brick-and-mortar location before opening opportunities to franchise in 2020. There are currently 21 franchise locations already opening or in the works across the country.

The Peoria location will be Jones-Dean and her husband’s first restaurant. She

says opening a franchise location was a great opportunity that just made sense.

“We wanted to create job opportunities,” Jones-Dean says. “And we felt like this would be the perfect opportunity to get the community involved in something new for their taste buds.”

“We want to basically create generational wealth and business opportunities for others and show others that you’re capable of doing anything you put your mind to,” she says.

Peoria residents intrigued by the menu can dive into customer favorites like the chili cheese fries made with chicken chili and cheddar cheese. The buffalo ranch chicken is a dish that smothers the fries with buffalo and ranch sauces, cheddar cheese and lets the customer decide between grilled or fried chicken.

For seafood lovers, the restaurant offers dishes like the BBQ bacon ranch shrimp and the lemon garlic crab and shrimp, which top the fries with tasty seafood and cheddar cheese before finishing them off with BBQ and ranch sauce on the former and lemon garlic sauce on the latter.

And for those on a vegetarian or vegan path, the restaurant will offer Beyond Meat plant-based protein and other options.

According to Jones-Dean, the location will offer discounts to students, first responders and seniors.

Mr. Fries Man is opening their doors at 8272 W. Lake Pleasant Parkway, Suite 207, with a current target opening in late January. Grand opening festivities will be announced soon.

Salon Blissful Opens Third Peoria Location

“We are well known in the Peoria community,” says Linda Awdisho, who owns and operates the chain alongside her husband, Steve. “Like our other two Peoria locations, we strive to provide the best customer service experience for our clients. We want them to leave loving the service they received.”

Awdisho, who relocated to Arizona in 2005, has been a licensed stylist for 25 years. In 2015, she and her husband purchased the original Salon Blissful located in Mesa before expanding into Peoria in 2017 and again in 2019.

They continued expanding to a third Peoria location recently and they have also taken client haircare solutions virtual by creating an online store where customers can purchase well-known, popular brands of hair care and styling products that will be delivered right to their door.

Thompson Thrift Retail Group Closes on Land Near Peoria; Grandstone at Sunrise Complete THOMPSON THRIFT RETAIL GROUP (TTRG) RECENTLY CLOSED ON 24 ACRES OF LAND AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF LOOP 101 AND NORTHERN AVENUE IN NEARBY GLENDALE. The property, which recently received zoning and other entitlements from the City of Glendale, will be the future home to a horizontal mixeduse development that will feature a blend of commercial and residential uses.

On the northern half of the development, TTRG has secured user commitments from Black Rock Coffee, Cobblestone Carwash, QuikTrip, Whataburger, and Life Storage. TTRG is also in negotiations for its final frontage PAD with rapidly expanding fast-casual concept Slim Chickens. This would leave only approximately three acres of land available that would have prime Loop 101 frontage.

“Closing on the Loop 101 and Northern Avenue site is the culmination of years of hard work by our internal development team and several third-party consultants,” says Chris Hake, Senior Vice President and Director

of the Southwest Region for Thompson Thrift Retail Group. “Obtaining entitlements for this project required our team to work with multiple city and state agencies due to scheduled improvements on Northern Avenue, and we are very appreciative for all the diligent efforts put into these entitlements by the City of Glendale, Peoria, MCDOT, and ADOT. We would also like to thank our third-party marketing team Phoenix Commercial Advisors, who had more than 90% of the project under lease or purchase agreement at our initial closing.”

TTRG is wrapping up permits for its master infrastructure improvements and vertical improvements for Black Rock Coffee and expects to commence construction in February. PAD deliveries to Cobblestone Carwash, QuikTrip, Whataburger, and Slim Chickens should happen in the second quarter of 2022. TTRG expects the first users within the project to open in late 2022.

Theater Works also has reorganized youth education programs serving young actors under the new names, Theater Alive Kids (formerly KidsAlive Jr.), for ages 6-11 and Theater Alive Teen (formerly KidsAlive Teen) for ages 12-17. The program welcomes back Courtney Stevens in her previous role as Theater Alive Stage Manager and new faces to the program: Meija Eller as Director, Kathleen Berger as Music Director, and Paul Pedersen as Choreographer.

Theater Alive teaches a wide variety of disciplines including acting, voice, movement, and stage presence.

This program is open to students at all levels of their musical training. All students who attend have roles in the final production taking place in late spring. Space will be limited to 35 students per session; registration is available online at the Theater Works website.

Main Stage theater productions (formerly MasterWorks) in the Gyder Theater will launch in the summer.

“We have been able to innovate and to start again only because of the commitment of so many, and their belief in the importance of the arts,” Hinkle says. “We look forward to announcing additional productions soon.”

The “People’s Open” Tees Off Next Month; Tickets on Sale Now

THE 2022 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN WILL TAKE PLACE FEBRUARY 7-13 AT TPC SCOTTSDALE. “The People’s Open” has been named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA TOUR four times in the past seven years to acknowledge the tournament’s legendary status as one the most unique events in golf. The 2022 edition will mark the 87th playing of the event and the 13th with Waste Management as title sponsor.

A field of 132 players will vie for the $8.2 million purse, the $1,476,000 firstplace check, and 500 FedExCup points.

PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, February 4, to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open.

Tournament Chairman Dr. Michael Golding recently announced that defending champion and four-time Major winner Brooks Koepka and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama are the latest to commit to play in the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The duo, who are both twotime WM Phoenix Open winners and currently rank in the Top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings, have combined to win four WM Phoenix Open titles in the last seven years.

Koepka and Matsuyama will join World No. 1 golfer Jon Rahm and World No. 6 golfer Justin Thomas, who were among the first to commit to “The People’s Open” last month.

The Free Itty Bitty Open on January 15 Introduces the Littlest of Golfers to the Sport THE JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATION OF ARIZONA (JGAA) WILL HOST THE ITTY BITTY OPEN ON JANUARY 15 AT NUMEROUS VALLEY-WIDE LOCATIONS. IT IS OPEN TO ALL YOUNGSTERS AGES 3-5 YEARS OLD. The free event has three clinic times per location starting a 9, 10 and 11 a.m. where juniors and their parents will learn the basics skills of golf taught by qualified PGA and LPGA professionals. After the clinics, the kids will participate in fun-filled, noncompetitive golf games and tournaments. Each golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs, balls, a bag, and a visor; participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer.

“The Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” says Scott McNevin, Executive Director of the JGAA. “It’s always fun to see so many kids having such a good time. It’s very exciting to think that a three-year-old kid attending the

Dream City Foundation to Host Walk to Raise Funds for Human Trafficking Survivors DREAM CITY FOUNDATION IS HOSTING ITS THIRD ANNUAL STOP TRAFFIC WALK ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 29, FROM 5-8 P.M. The walk is in support of Where Hope Lives, the largest human trafficking rescue and recovery operation in North America.

THE DETAILS What: The community is invited to the Stop Traffic Walk, which will raise funds and awareness for the victims of human trafficking with proceeds going toward Where Hope Lives. This nonprofit provides resources to give trafficking survivors a fresh start.

Solar Panel Prices Rising Sharply in 2nd Quarter.

I

n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work.

Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer.

Technological innovation and scaledup production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back.

Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow.

And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according

to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year.

Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. 85383 Sees a Dramatic Increase in Luxury Home Sales

hen you think of luxury homes in the 85383, no one would blame you for thinking of a time not that long ago when the number of luxury home sales were in the single digits. The truth is that by 2020, that number had grown into the double digits, and in the last year alone, the number of luxury homes sold has doubled from that number!

In 2020, buyers in the area closed the sale at over a million dollars on 45 homes, with the average sale price coming in around $1,353,772, or an average of $277.58 per square foot. In 2021, those numbers increased to 90 total homes sold at $1 million or greater.

The average sale price of these homes was $1,318,966, or an average of $301.44 per square foot.

Though the average sale price is lower this year, the increase of nearly $24 per

square foot is a powerful indicator of how homes in the area only continue to gain value. One home that sold for $1 million this year had only sold for $759,000 two years ago, highlighting an outstanding increase in the equity the house had developed.

Luxury homes in the Upper Westside have also seen a dramatic decrease in the number of days they spent on the market from 2020 to 2021. Last year, these home listings averaged 92.6 days on the market, while this year they averaged 58.7 days on the market. That 33-day decrease reflects market trends we have seen nationwide throughout the year of houses selling fast; it also shows the number of buyers eager to call 85383 home.

In 2018, U.S. Money Magazine ranked Peoria 29th on its list of the 50 best places to live in America, ranking cities based on the median family income, anticipated job gains, and more. We

know this is still true as we go into 2022! Prospective buyers are shopping the listings here thanks to the many great local amenities we have, such as influential schools and a thriving business and entertainment district that includes a variety of retail locations and assorted dining options.

Proximity to Lake Pleasant and other natural features like incredible hiking trails and breathtaking mountain views are bringing in individuals and families who want to be better connected with nature. Peoria also has great access to other shopping and nature attractions throughout the Valley via Arizona Route 303, the Arizona 101 Loop, and Interstate 17.

When paired with quality construction and desirable existing luxury homes, these features give us a more complete picture about the curb appeal of the local market and why more people will pay $1 million or more to call Peoria home.

This fall season, Liberty High School students brought home two Emmys in the Regional Student Production Awards and one staff Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).

Sunrise Mountain High School brought home an astounding 11 Emmys from two film and TV students, Ryan Kraska and Kalini Aguon-Sewell. This is especially exciting as it is the first time Peoria Unified students have made it this far in the NATAS Awards, according to the district.

PEORIA UNIFIED LAUNCHES NEW PODCAST Peoria Unified just released the first episode of its new podcast, the Progress Report. In episodes of the Progress Report, the district breaks down current district-wide projects and programs in more detail than is provided its bi-weekly podcast, Trending Peoria.

Each episode focuses on major updates within Peoria

Unified, including the Strategic Plan, voter initiatives, and academic achievement.

Like Trending Peoria, the Progress Report features interviews from Peoria Unified employees. DVUSD Approves School Boundaries for New Elementary School; Announces New Principal

T

he DVUSD Governing Board approved school boundaries for the new Elementary #32, which is currently under construction at 5757 Inspiration Mountain Parkway near 57th Avenue and Happy Valley Road. The new boundary for Elementary #32 follows along the canal to the north, Pyramid Peak Parkway to the west, and Happy Valley Road to the south. Street-level

In addition to approving the school’s boundaries, the new principal has also been announced. Dr. JoAnn Schwarting, the 2021 DVUSD Principal of The Year, will take over the reins of Elementary #32. Dr. Schwarting has served the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2005. She taught seventh grade English language arts at Desert Mountain School for seven years. She then transferred to Desert Sky Middle School where she assumed the roles of instructional coach and assistant principal. Most recently, Dr. Schwarting spent the last six years leading Desert Mountain School as principal. Though it is bittersweet leaving her current school, Schwarting is up for the challenge and eager for the opportunity.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be given the honor of serving this beautiful community,” she says. “My goal is to nurture a school environment that is caring and connected. I

believe partnerships are necessary when educating our students, so I’m looking forward to developing strong family and community ties.”

Achievable New Year’s Resolutions for Families

’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions as they often leave me feeling defeated. However, I do believe there’s value in setting high hopes for a fresh year. As we begin 2022, here are eight doable goals for families who seek making home life more harmonious.

START A SPECIAL WEEKLY OR MONTHLY RITUAL My kids love board games and I often find myself putting off playing due to being distracted with work, cleaning, cooking, and more. However, starting a dedicated and consistent ritual would hold our entire family accountable for partaking in fun-filled activities. If weekly is too much pressure, determine a monthly family game night, movie night, craft night, or other type of night that fits your family best. Let each child offer their choice of activity and take turns implementing.

PRIORITIZE EATING DINNER TOGETHER I know eating dinner as a family every night is often unattainable. With that being said, when families dine together, it helps them handle the stresses of daily life. It’s a nice time to debrief the day and talk things through as a unit. To get your kids chatting, play Two Highs, One Low—ask them to name two amazing things that happened that day and express one thing they found challenging.

PLAY HOOKY We get sick days, right? Why not take a “well day” and do something fun occasionally? When I was young, my mom would let me play hooky every so often—we’d do something sporadic, and it meant the world to me. Life moves fast and even kids need time to reboot, and sometimes a simple day off and quality time does the trick.

TAKE THE TRIP Instill in your kids to value making memories over monetary things. The pandemic has reminded our family to take advantage of time and live life to the fullest, and so we’ve taken every opportunity to travel. People don’t take trips; trips take people and exposing your kids to exploration and adventure will only shape them into more cultured, wellrounded individuals.

PAY IT FORWARD Make a list of various ways your family wants to help others this year, then determine a plan to make them happen. One idea is to ask your kids to choose some toys they’ve outgrown to donate to a shelter— it’s simple, but the lessons learned are so important.

GET ACTIVE Exercise is the most cliché New Year’s resolution, so give it a fresh family-infused approach. For older kids, decide to train for a 5K together or do regular hikes in your area. Bike ride to lunch on the week-

ends or simply play catch with your kids in the yard.

Lay a strong foundation of making exercise fun.

UNPLUG Decide to digitally detach during specific times, such as for dinner or certain times during the evening.

Put the phone down and focus on being 100% present for yourself and your family. It’s amazing how rewarding it is to have a conversation with actual eye contact! In other words, connect by disconnecting.

HONOR YOUR CHILD’S INDIVIDUALITY I have three young boys and they’re all very different.

While one is creative and crafty, the other is all about sports, and my toddler just loves to play. Make sure to get time with each of your kids individually, honoring their interests even if they’re not necessarily yours.

Spending that special quality time will only strengthen your bond and help boost your child’s self-esteem.

Getting Back Your Lost Exercise Habit

he weather in Arizona is delightful.

However, the thought of fulfilling the promise to yourself of getting back to exercising in the new year may have you feeling frightful.

As Sun Health’s Wellness Specialist, Alex Stark, M.S., says the key to making sure you stay true to your New Year’s resolution of getting back to exercising is to start small.

“I like to remind clients that the most important thing is to start small. Exercise is not like riding a bike. You might remember what to do, but your muscles need a little time,” he says. “If you used to exercise for an hour, start with 15 minutes. If you used to cover three miles in one hour, now you may only be able to do one mile and that’s okay.”

As Alex points out, it is not uncommon for people to take time off from exercising during the holidays; others may have stopped workout routines due to fitness center closures. Another important part of getting back to physical activity is to reestablish the routine, and that does not happen overnight.

“It takes 12 weeks to establish a habit, so

the sooner you start the habit and do it more regularly, the more success you will have in the long run,” Alex says. “And the smaller amounts and working up to frequency is key as well. Once you establish the behavior again, if you get off track something will feel amiss because you get an adrenaline boost when you exercise, and when you don’t you will feel groggy and miss the feeling. It’s all about getting back to the routine.”

IN THEATERS House Of Gucci The story of how Patrizia Reggiani fell in and out of love with—and then murdered—her husband and heir to the Gucci company, Maurizio. Ridley Scott can add comedy to his list of genres he can nail. House Of Gucci is a satire about the rich and how insecure they are, and how easily any taste of greed can corrupt. This is complemented by clever filmmaking choices and the cast.

The performances range from chewing as much scenery as possible (Lady Gaga and Jared Leto) and playing it totally straight (Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons), and the contrast works well. It’s also nice to see how Scott gives this film the expensive look it needs, filled with overindulgence. A funny film, even if it feels bloated, but one could argue that fits for the film.

receiving visions from who she believes is Jesus. It’s hard to explain something like Benedetta without putting people off. It’s well done, with Paul Verhoeven making the most of the explicit subtext and visuals to support it. The actors convince you of their madness, hypocrisy, and desire, and Verhoeven loves to make you hate them in all their explicit glory. But it’s subject matter is one that will turn off and offend, or even just simply disgust. It’s a movie that one must approach cautiously—it’s not unrated for nothing.

ON NETFLIX The Power of The Dog A man begins a game of psychological war with his brother’s new wife. Silence can be killer, and Jane Campion, in her first movie in 12 years, uses it perfectly.

Each third of the film focuses on a different character and how they affect everyone, and slowly but surely, their personalities change and deteriorate.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are the standouts here, both

strangely swapping personalities over the course of the film. The dark tone contrasts well with the lovely but still barren western frontier presented.

Jonny Greenwood continues to impress with his tense score. Quite an accomplishment.

ON AMC+ Silent Night A family gathers for what may be their final Christmas dinner. Silent Night, for most of its runtime, is great. The dark humor mixed with sincere family drama is a great showcase for firsttime director Camille Griffin. How the various cast members show their emotions, whether subdued or outward, makes these characters real. Griffin’s script also does a great job at hinting at the main plot without telling us for the first twenty minutes. But the film unfortunately falls apart in its last ten minutes, rushing through its conclusion, our characters collapsing suddenly, and a final moment that is incredibly sudden and unearned plays out. It

almost ruins what could have been a new holiday classic. It’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it to not stick the landing.
