SCOTTSDALE BEGINS TRACKING INTERNATIONAL VISITOR NUMBERS,

ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 1.7 MILLION IN 2018

SCOTTSDALE REMAINS A TOURIST DESTINATION OF CHOICE – A FACT CONFIRMED IN A RECENTLYRELEASED TOURISM STUDY CONDUCTED BY THE CITY’S TOURISM AND EVENTS DEPARTMENT. According to the 2019 Scottsdale Tourism Study Visitor Statistics Report, the city saw an increase in visitors over the prior year, hosting about 200,000 more overnight and day trip visitors in 2018, totaling 9.1 million, compared to 8.9 million in 2017.

This was also the first study to include international overnight visitors -- estimated to be about 1.7 million in 2018.

“It’s a very important group of travelers to consider. Data shows us international travelers typically stay longer based on where they traveled from and tend to spend more,” said Karen Churchard, Scottsdale’s tourism and events director. “We’ve now created a baseline in this report that will give us the resourc-

es to track those trends and have that valuable data available.”

In 2018, visitors spent an estimated $2.1 billion in Scottsdale, compared to $1.6 billion in 2017. Their direct spending created an annual economic impact of $3.1 billion in revenue to local businesses, an increase from $2.4 billion in 2017.

In conjunction with the Visitor Statistics Report, Scottsdale studies lodging trends using bed tax collection figures, which are consistently tracked and readily available. The Scottsdale Tourism Study Lodging Report looks specifically at trends in bed tax collection, room inventory, average room rates, occupancy rates and other factors related to lodging trends. It includes tax receipt figures that reflect actual sales tax and bed tax collections during the previous month and data that’s based primarily on properties located within Scottsdale.

According to the 2019 report, Scottsdale’s bed tax revenue totaled $20,367,185 in 2018, up seven percent from 2017. In addition, bed tax generated more than $146 million in revenue for the city and annual occupancy was 70 percent, a 1.7 percent increase from 2017.

The Scottsdale Tourism Study draws from multiple traveling reporting agencies that track and benchmark tourism data to track economic and social impact.

Longwoods International, a leader in tourism market research, conducted a survey of 450 visitors. Travelers were asked about their experience in Scottsdale and the results were all very positive. More than 90 percent of visitors were satisfied with their trip to Scottsdale, 83 percent planned to visit again, and 95 percent stated they would recommend Scottsdale to someone else.

On the topic of safety, 97 percent responded that they felt extremely, very or pretty safe.

Downtown Scottsdale was the top attraction with 61 percent visitation.

OEB BREAKFAST OPENS FIRST U.S. LOCATION IN SCOTTSDALE OEB BREAKFAST CO. OPENED ITS FIRST U.S. LOCATION IN SCOTTSDALE THIS NOVEMBER. The breakfast concept is the creation of celebrated Italian-Canadian Chef Mauro Martina. The dishes at OEB are a creative and upscale spin on tried and true classics, bringing forth the artistry and passion that Chef Martina brings to the table.

While this is the first in the States, the concept has found award-winning success in Canada with multiple locations.

“Breakfast means so much more to me than just the first meal of the day,” said Martina, owner and founder of OEB. “It’s about elevating the whole breakfast experience. That’s what OEB is all about.”

The 2,900-square-foot restaurant opened on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Chauncey Lane at 103-17757 N. Scottsdale Road. The space seats 84 inside with 18 seats on the patio. The interior includes an open kitchen concept and full service bar that will serve hand-crafted cocktails, local beer and Frizzante on tap. Venetian plaster walls line one side of the restaurant interior with wood beams throughout and a Terrazzo bar as a focal piece. The ambiance inside is contemporary and clean with colors of light blue and yellow adorning the walls.

Classically trained, Martina has cultivated a culture that prioritizes connection and genuine food integrity while supporting local vendors and farmers that care about quality, detail and ethics.

Martina spent his childhood in Italy, where he was exposed to fresh, rich ingredients at local markets on a daily basis. This helped feed his passion for good, honest food. With his culinary foundation built in Europe, Martina moved to Canada in 1992.

It was there that he embarked on his career as an executive chef when he was just 21 years-old.

Throughout his career, he has worked at Michelin Star restaurants alongside some of the best chefs in the industry. Martina quickly climbed the ranks in Canada, and in 2009 he opened his first OEB location. The chef believes in exceptional products and ingredients sourced straight from farmers.

SCOTTSDALE VOTERS OVERWHELMINGLY APPROVE QUESTIONS 1, 2 AND 3;

FIRST MAJOR BOND PROGRAM IN CITY SINCE 2000 SCOTTSDALE VOTERS HAVE APPROVED THE CITY’S FIRST MAJOR BOND PROGRAM IN 19 YEARS

BY OVERWHELMINGLY BACKING QUESTIONS 1, 2 AND 3. The three Scottsdale questions passed with an average of 70 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results. The program invests in 58 projects totaling $319 million.

“We are grateful that Scottsdale residents saw how important Questions 1, 2 and 3 are for our community’s quality of life and future. The bonds invest in public safety, senior centers, parks, youth sports facilities and infrastructure repairs. The results show how our community can come together for the greater good and make our great city even greater,” said Mike Norton, Co-Chair of the For The Best Scottsdale campaign.

Scottsdale voters turned out in impressive numbers for the bond election. There were 47,798 ballots cast in this election putting voter turnout at 27.52 percent. In 2015, voter turnout for a less successful bond election was 25 percent with 37,761 ballots cast.

“Scottsdale voters turned out strongly in favor of the three bond questions because they make critical investments and infrastructure repairs our community needs. We built a positive campaign led by a diverse coalition of supporters all committed to investing Scottsdale’s present and future,” said Dana Close, cochair of the For The Best Scottsdale campaign.

Question 1 passed with 69 percent of the vote. The measure improves the

Granite Reef and Via Linda Senior Centers, Paiute Neighborhood Center, Pinnacle Peak Park, McCormickStillman Railroad Park and other recreation facilities.

Question 2 was approved with 68 percent of the vote. Question 2 makes infrastructure repairs at Civic Center Plaza and the southern end of Indian Bend Wash, repairs horse barns and makes other improvements at WestWorld of Scottsdale, renovates the Stage 2 Theater at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and adds public parking and pedestrian upgrades in Old Town Scottsdale.

Voters backed Question 3 with 73 percent of the vote. The measure will build new fire stations, installs bulletproof glass at police stations and upgrades Scottsdale’s 911

systems and first responder training facilities.

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and the entire Scottsdale City Council endorsed all three city bond questions. The Scottsdale Fire Fighters Association, Scottsdale Fraternal Order of Police, Police Officers of Scottsdale Association, AARP Arizona, Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce, Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors, Scottsdale Charros, The Thunderbirds, HonorHealth, Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, Arizona Quarter Horse Association, Scottsdale Fashion Square, the Coalition of Greater Scottsdale (COGS), Scottsdale Gallery Association, Phoenix Rising and the Scottsdale Ice Den also endorsed all three questions.

MAKING WRONG-WAY SIGNS MORE NOTICEABLE – IN A BIG WAY

get the attention of a driver heading the wrong way.

EFFORTS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CRASHES CAUSED BY OFTEN-IMPAIRED WRONGWAY DRIVERS INVOLVE A VARIETY OF COUNTERMEASURES. They include increasing the size and visibility of wrong-way signs at state highway interchanges.

One other upgrade was the installation of dozens of large “Wrong Way” signs, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet, installed above the left lanes of freeways.

They’re on the backs of bridges and other overhead structures and you, traveling the right way, may have noticed a few of them if you’ve glanced to the left across the median.

Those upgrades received a major boost in the form of a $2.1 million project to install new larger wrong way signage at more than 140 interchanges, along with other improvements, along several Phoenixarea freeways.

If you drive in the area, you’re much more likely to notice the larger “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs at the top of freeway off-ramps in the Valley. Not only are they bigger, they also represent updated national standards by being located lower to the ground and thus hopefully more in line with a driver’s line of vision. Yes, that’s about making them easier to see so that a wrong-way driver might not travel down that off-ramp.

The signs along exit ramps are not the only changes that crews, working mostly at night, made as part of this project. They also added many more of the large, white arrows that are located on the pavement of exit ramps. Those arrows point in the “right” direction of travel, as another measure designed to thescottsdalestandard.com

Those noticeable signs, facing in the wrong direction, are above the freeway left lanes because wrong-way drivers tend to travel in those lanes. More than two dozen of these signs were first installed along I-17 in Phoenix in 2017 in association with ADOT’s first-in-the-nation thermal camera wrong-way vehicle alert system.

ADOT has been installing larger and more visible wrong way signs not only along Phoenix-area freeways but also at highway interchanges across the state over the last several years.

This particular project has focused on sections of interstates 10 and 17, US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the East Valley, State Route 51 as well as Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Loop 303 in the West Valley.

It remains important to note that more noticeable signs and other countermeasures we’ve mentioned

can’t prevent someone, especially someone who’s impaired, from getting behind the wheel and becoming a wrong-way driver. The signs are big.

But stopping impaired driving would make a lifesaving difference in an even bigger way. That’s something to keep in mind as we head into the holiday travel season.

SIP SIP HOORAY! DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE NOW OFFERS SIP & STROLL HOURS ARIZONA AND VESTAR, THE OWNER OF DESERT RIDGE MARKETPLACE IN NORTH PHOENIX AS WELL AS TEMPE MARKETPLACE IN TEMPE AND A MULTITUDE OF OTHER LIFESTYLE CENTERS AROUND NOT ONLY ARIZONA BUT THE WEST, HAVE MADE HISTORY BY CHANGING LEGISLATION TO ALLOW SHOPPERS THE FIRST EVER “SIP AND STROLL” OPPORTUNITY IN THE STATE. The Vestar owners had the idea for this concept and took it to legislature, which recently passed a bill allowing shoppers ages 21 and older the opportunity to purchase beer, wine or cocktails from pop-up bars located at The District Stage and the Barnes & Noble Courtyard, and stroll throughout the center with the beverage in hand. Construction is currently underway for a permanent bar/kiosk called the Copper Cantina and will be operated by Copper Blues Live.

Copper Cantina is scheduled to open in January and will offer extended operating hours. Current hours for the sip and stroll are Fridays and Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 12 midnight (with last call at 11:30 p.m.) and Sunday from noon to 8:00 p.m. (with last call at 7:30 p.m.). Through the end of December, to promote the Sip and Stroll, guests will receive 10 percent off two rides to or from Desert Ridge Marketplace when using promo code SIPANDSTROLL with rideshare company Lyft.

To purchase alcoholic beverages, guests must present a valid driver’s license and be 21 years of age or older. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted outside of designated areas within The District. Once their age has been verified, customers will be given wrist bands to verify their eligibility and will be served in special plastic cups. Extra security is set to be provided, and patrons may enjoy their beverages in designated areas only — they are not allowed to take their drinks offsite or even into the parking lot.

While its centers continue to thrive in the ‘Age of Amazon’, Vestar has understood that energizing properties is key to their ongoing success; and that’s just how the idea to permit shoppers to stroll outdoors with a cocktail, beer or wine in hand came about.

While permitted in certain gaming areas like Las Vegas, the concept has been banned in Arizona and almost every state, until now. “You can get a drink at a movie theater and walk around resorts and golf courses with a cocktail, so why not retail centers?” asked Vestar President David Larcher.

Larcher said the company did its homework, talked to state officials including the Arizona Department of Liquor, and eventually landed a bill dealing with liquor laws during the past session of the Arizona State Leg-

islature. The bill was sponsored by State Representative Jeff Weninger and signed into law by Governor Doug Ducey several months ago. Larcher added that this program will help keep shopping centers relevant for people, saying, “Malls need to be destinations, and food, beverages, entertainment and art are all part of that.” He notes that since malls such as Desert Ridge Marketplace have been allowed to serve alcohol in enclosed areas for special events, he suggested making it a permanent situation.

The law allows certain retail properties that qualify to grant one of its existing bars or restaurants permission to serve alcohol outside of its establishment to a customer who then may stroll the grounds with an alcoholic beverage in hand. The plan, including security, must first be approved by the city in which the shopping center is located in, then by Director John Cocca of the Arizona Department of Liquor. The City of Phoenix and Director Cocca have approved the Desert Ridge Marketplace plan.

Desert Ridge Marketplace will be the first shopping center in the state to provide this new shopping experience along with Vestar’s Tempe Marketplace, which is also in the process of seeking approvals to offer the same amenity.

Copper Blues Live will be the only location at Desert Ridge Marketplace where customers can purchase alcohol and then stroll outdoors with the drink while enjoying movies, concerts, and various outdoor amenities. The popular restaurant, comedy spot and entertainment venue says they expect this change in the law will help business across the center.

allowing the owner or manager of a regional shopping center to designate one restaurant or bar with a liquor license to apply for the extended service. So that the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control can easily track compliances or potential issues, only one restaurant or bar per mall can offer the extended service. The legislation allows patrons to “consume spiritous liquor throughout a designated pedestrian area,” according to the legislation, which was sponsored by Rep. Jeff Weninger (R-Chandler) and passed both legislative chambers by an overwhelming majority. The new law allows up to 10 malls to apply for the extended service. Only larger shopping centers with at least 400,000 square feet of retail space — the ones with more extensive pedestrian areas — are eligible.

While the experience was previously banned in many states, Larcher predicts common-area liquor sales could spread to other states based on Arizona’s experience and due to the fact that bringing in another element of entertainment and enjoyment will continue to keep up the demand for shopping malls, particularly since online shopping has become the preferred way to shop for many.

As we head into the season of shopping and celebration, it seems there is no better time to roll out this new concept, especially since in addition to Sip and Stroll, Desert Ridge Marketplace offers fun holiday events including nightly snowfall at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. as well as holiday shows featuring local community groups all season long. Culinary Dropout, one of Fox Restaurant Concepts’ popular dining establishments with four other locations around the valley, is headed to north Scottsdale! Culinary Dropout is set to bring its vibrantyet-approachable menu, laidback vibe, games and live music to Scottsdale Quarter, where it will be right at home.

Fox Restaurant Concepts first brought the Culinary Dropout gastropub to the valley with the Scottsdale Waterfront location in Old Town in 2010. The restaurant’s menu featuring chef-driven comfort food quickly gained popularity and so other locations around Arizona including Phoenix, Tempe, Gilbert and Tucson soon followed. Now it’s north Scottsdale’s turn to get in on the food and fun that Culinary Dropout has to offer.

MARINE RAIDER FOUNDATION MAKES ITS MARK ON VALLEY OF THE SUN

ore than 500,000 military veterans reside in Arizona and many are still learning to cope with the everyday struggles of their transition back into society. Whether it’s dealing with medical costs not covered by military health insurance or adjusting to civilian life, out-of-pocket expenses and life changes can feel overwhelming for any former serviceman or servicewoman.

Members of the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), comprised of Marine Raiders, also face the challenge of being the newest to the United States Special Operations Command. Formed in 2006

by Donald Rumsfeld, Marine Raiders are the most elite of the country’s special operations teams. They are quiet professionals deployed around the world to execute complex operations in uncertain environments. You’d think coming home would give them peace of mind, but that’s not always the case.

Being new also means fewer support systems exist.

Q: Is CBD the same as marijuana and will it make me high?

A: No, CBD is NOT marijuana and it will NOT make you high. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 different cannabinoids. Like Hemp, marijuana is also a variety of cannabis plant. Hemp plants contain CBD and trace amounts of THC at or below 0.3%. THC has both medicinal and psychoactive properties, whereas CBD has tremendous medicinal properties (neuro-protectant and anti-inflammatory) with no psychoactive effects.

Q: Is CBD legal?

A: Yes, Hemp-derived CBD is Federally legal. CBD is primarily produced from hemp plants but can also be produced from marijuana plants. CBD is illegal if sourced from marijuana. It is important to know the source, and that

you are purchasing from a reputable supplier. If a CBD product tests higher than the Federally mandated THC level of 0.3%, the product is deemed illegal.

There are a number of products on the market that are not properly lab tested, do not contain the labeled amount of CBD, and exceed the legal amount of THC. Proper lab testing is crucial to make sure that you are not breaking the law unknowingly.

Q: How do I know if a CBD product is legitimate/safe?

A: The average consumer won’t know and may find that many CBD products don’t work for them. Lab testing verifies the CBD content/potency as well as tests for bacteria, mold, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. There are few regulations governing today’s CBD industry which means purchasing from a reputable source that follows proper lab testing procedures is extremely important.

Q: How do I determine what is a quality CBD product?

A: We have an ongoing joke in our lab, “If you wouldn’t buy sushi at a gas station, would you buy gas station CBD?” Always start with a reputable brand with proper labeling and verified third party lab testing. Full-Spectrum CBD is king because it produces an “entourage effect” in conjunction with other cannabinoids, as opposed to a “Pure” or “Isolated” CBD, which has limited benefits and no traceable THC. Seek products that have all-natural ingredients and use Super Critical CO2 Extraction. Quality CBD is not cheap.

Q: How does CBD work in my body?

A: To put it simply, all animals and humans have an Endocannabinoid System already present in their bodies.

You have receptors throughout your body that accept and use these cannabinoids (CBD being the most prolific) to regulate homeostasis in the body.

That’s why CBD can work for so many ailments.

Q: What is the best delivery method for CBD? A: It is scientifically proven that smoking a medication and inhaling the vapors has high efficacy and is fast-acting.

However, it is generally accepted that smoking, and more recently vaping, is not recommended for your health. The best delivery method would then be CBD Oil administered sublingually and absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

You can also get CBD through topical applications (creams/lotions) absorbed through the skin. Topical applications are more location specific and can be very effective but have less efficacy than sublingual delivery. You can also ingest CBD (softgels/gummies/honey), but this has the lowest efficacy.

This adults-only event gave attendees the opportunity to experience Girl Scouting first-hand and see how it can transform girls into G.I.R.L.s – go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders. FRY’S MARKETPLACE GETS THE PARTY STARTED

WITH HOLIDAY-THEMED COOKING CLASSES

here are many things I like about the Fry’s Signature Marketplace at Tatum and Shea (aka, “Fancy Fry’s”) — the covered parking, the multiple bars (I’m talking olive and salad, but yes, the wine bar is great, too!)… the list goes on. But there is another element I love that is exclusive to this location — the cooking school!

My love of cooking exceeds my skills, but that doesn’t stop me from trying.

Thus, cooking classes. The Fry’s atmosphere is pretty intimate — it looks almost like a friend’s kitchen where you can belly up to the bar and chat while you watch her cook — and you can also enjoy a beverage while you cook.

Bonus. There are a number of class options ranging from knife skills to culinary exploration such as Native Foods, Basque Cooking, Paleo 101 and more.

Some classes, which range between one and two hours, are even free!

Being a huge fan of both themes and doing fun stuff with my kids, the three of us took a Halloween Treats class back in October. This class included three fun (and super simple) recipes, plus pumpkin carving. WaFd BANK ARIZONA MONEY MAGAZINE’S TOP BANK IN ARIZONA EVOLVES TO BETTER SERVE CUSTOMERS PRESENT AND FUTURE

ashington Federal is one of the nation’s strongest banks.

It is a full-service national banking institution that focuses on personal banking as well as business banking, commercial and equipment financing, and retail home loan and commercial real estate financing.

In fact, it is one of the areas few ‘portfolio’ lenders when it comes to home loans.

Federal in Arizona still got the same questions over and over from customers and the general public alike. Some of Arizona regional president Mike Brown’s favorites:

WASHINGTON FEDERAL TO WAFD BANK As such, according to Brown, Washington Federal adopted its longtime nickname, WaFd Bank, as its trade name.

“It tells people we are a bank and is an abbreviation of our current name.

We pronounce it Wah-Fed,” says Brown. “WaFd Bank aligns with our NASDAQ ticker symbol, which is WAFD. WAFDbank is also our name on social media.”

Along with the change came an entirely new logo as well.

eight interlocking W’s, recognizing their Washington state roots and symbolizing how their branches across now eight states are linked together as a team across the markets they serve – bankers, clients and communities working together to fuel economic growth and strengthen neighborhoods.

“Customers will start to see changes in the digital arena and on the website very soon, including new email signatures, signage and other advertising materials throughout 2020,” says Brown, noting WaFd Bank is innovating every day, but still remains a friendly, accessible brand.

Knocked down – actually physically knocked down by the blast of the fire – but never out, Brown had a decision to make once he got his family out safe.

“Do we invest here, meaning starting over effectively homeless, or do we cut our losses and move on?” says Brown, who stayed, re-building his home and life while building his banking career in Arizona.

By 2012, Brown was ready for a new investment.

And a truly local one.

Enter then-Washington Federal, whose tagline just so happens to be “Invested Here.”

LOCAL LEADERSHIP WaFd opened its first bank in Arizona in the 1990s. After measured and steady growth, they took a massive leap in 2014 by naming banking veteran Mike Brown as its first-ever Arizona regional bank president.

“We can all talk the talk,” says Brown, who initially joined the bank to help launch a national equipment finance division. “But, I liked that this brand – like me – really walked the walk when it came to investing in our local communities.”

His Arizona story begins back in 2005, when he and his wife moved to the northeast Valley.

In 2014 when Brown accepted the role of Arizona regional president, he made it his mission to be “invested here” over the long term to help his team be best poised to similarly be invested in their customers and communities as authentically as possible.

At first, the Valley was too hot for the Browns. Quite literally.

“It all happened so fast,” says Brown, referring to an actual fire that erupted in his home just months after he moved in while he, his family and dogs were all inside.

“This was never more evident than in the weeks of 2019, as government workers faced massive hardships as a result of the shutdown,” says Brown. thescottsdalestandard.com

On Jan. 15, 2019, Washington Federal announced a 90-day interest-free loan designed to help workers through the shutdown period for an amount equal to the net take home pay for up to six missed paychecks.

Over the next two weeks, their Arizona team worked 14-hour days to fulfill these loans. Of the tens of millions Washington Federal loaned during that time, more than half were in Arizona.

“And that is really only the first in a long line of work we have been doing in recent years,” says Brown.

as well as on the lives of individuals statewide.

“We’ve funded projects to expand a local airport, built safe housing, added dorms and other needed buildings for a university, and so much more,” says Brown.

He also launched a community outreach program in 2015 called ‘WaFd Focus on Arizona,’ wherein he empowers each and every member of our company in Arizona to work together to donate time and fundraise for causes they personally care about.

This also includes dedicated workday time spent on financial literacy outreach at elementary, middle and high schools statewide.

Finally, WaFd Bank Arizona walks the

walk with real financial commitments to those who need it in Arizona via the WaFd Bank Foundation.

“The mission of the WaFd Bank Foundation is to facilitate direct donations to community-based nonprofits that are serving the needs of low and moderate-income individuals,” says Brown. “The foundation has granted more than $200,000 to Arizona nonprofits in recent years. Nationally, the grant program has exceeded more than $1 million in donations in states where it has a footprint since its founding in 2008.”

Among the local organizations that have benefited from the Foundation in recent years are: Care Fund, UMOM New Day Centers, Habitat for Human-

ity, Central Arizona Shelter Services, International Rescue Committee, Pima County Community Land Trust, Right Turn for Yuma Veterans, Boys & Girls Clubs statewide, YMCA, Youth on their Own, Junior Achievement of Arizona, Chicanos Por La Causa and Save the Family.

Notably, this year alone, the local team has volunteered over 2,200 hours and donated nearly $150,000 in grants.

“Arizona’s continued economic development is not happening in a vacuum.

It is happening when those who can, ‘do,’” says Brown. “I am ready – we are ready – to ‘do’ more. Are you?”

rizona is known for being a fantastic place to get outside and enjoy the wonders of nature, regardless of the activity you choose. Fortunately for us, our state is not only home to 22 National Parks and Monuments in the National Park Service, but we also have one of the best managed state park systems in the United States. In 2017, the Arizona State Parks & Trails system was awarded the Gold Medal for being the best-managed state park system in the nation from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.

Arizona State Parks & Trails are located throughout the state on more than 64,000 acres of pristine Arizona wilderness, near lakes, deserts, forests, and natural wonders. There are 35 state park areas around Arizona, with 18 recreational parks, nine historical parks, seven conservation areas, and one memorial park. The park also has a fantastic visitors center, educational facilities and libraries, and many fascinating environmental classes and programs.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE – PAYSON Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located near Payson on the Mogollon Rim. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a stream fed by natural springs. The stream flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM – SUPERIOR One of the best reasons to venture east of Phoenix on Highway 60 is to visit the diverse beauty of Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Founded in the 1920s by mining magnate Col. William Boyce Thompson, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. This is a beautiful spot for a day trip, and a must-see drive into the mountains near Superior on the way to Globe.

CATALINA – TUCSON If you’re looking for fantastic natural views of Sonoran Desert mountains, you must pay a visit to Catalina State Park in Tucson. Nestled in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, this park provides 5,500 acres of fantastic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, through canyons, streams, and desert in the Coronado National Forest. A favorite

spot for bird and wildlife watching, the park offers beautiful views of mountains, desert flora, and wildlife.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS – BENSON Celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, Kartchner Caverns is a world-class Arizona State Park that features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. A well-kept secret for decades, the park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course touring the pristine and previously untouched caverns. A visit to Kartchner Caverns is worth the trip south to Benson, but be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly.

robate is a court proceeding used to settle the estate of someone who has no Will. However, a person that has a Will may also end up in probate court. That’s because a Will doesn’t transfer a person’s assets to his or her heirs automatically – it only states who should receive those assets.

Probate is time consuming and expensive for a personal representative (or executor, as it’s named in many states). It can be an agonizing and long drawn out procedure. But it is avoidable with the right estate planning tools, and specifically with a Revocable Living Trust.

Couples often own most of their property jointly, but on the death of the second spouse, the children or other heirs are faced with the settlement of the estate. It can be very burdensome for the person you have

chosen to take care of your affairs.

Before anything can be done to sell or transfer your assets, the Probate Court must be involved.

The Revocable Living Trust is valuable for many estate planning needs, but one of the most obvious is the avoidance of all the time and expense of probate. In addition, if you can no longer manage your affairs (either when determined incompetent or at death), your successor trustee (someone you have already named in your Trust) automatically takes over. A Will doesn’t help with incapacity planning at all.

In addition, probate is a public proceeding. I didn’t realize just how public and how easy it was to get information until I asked my administrative assistant to check on a case. A few minute later he came in and said “Since it was only $2.00, I went ahead and got a copy of the will.

The clerk will email it to me later today.” Wow - I don’t know about you, but I don’t want people to know what my estate plan says!

In many cases, not only is the Will public, but a list of assets and the appraised amount must also be filed. If maintaining your privacy and that of your heirs is important to you, then you want to avoid probate with a Revocable Living Trust.

JOJO RABBIT

During WWII in Nazi Germany, a young boy questions his beliefs when he discovers a young Jewish girl secretly living in his house.

Taika Waititi manages to perfectly walk the tightrope between poor taste and edgy comedy. Jojo Rabbit tears apart fascism in a comedic yet still heartfelt way, never pulling punches and still giving such a horrific time the brutally honest look it deserves. Even the film’s design and cinematography match the tonal shifts between light and dark. The cast is a perfect mix of newcomers (Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie) and seasoned actors (Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell) who bring the characters to life. This was a passion project for Waititi and it shows.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Two sailors suspect there are greater forces conspiring against them on their isolated lighthouse shift.

The wonderful thing about Robert Eggers’ new film is how the viewer soon feels the same isolation as the characters. The camerawork, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe’s performances and visuals capture you and place you into their world before you know it. This world is scary, unrelenting, nothing ever feels normal or safe, and it will continuously keep you guessing if something is actually watching our char-

acters or if they’re going insane. The black and white photography and unique aspect ratio are key in this style. Creating the atmosphere perfectly is Mark Korven’s absolutely terrifying score - one of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a new horror classic.

FORD V FERRARI

The true story of Ford’s efforts to outdo Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford V Ferrari is 152 minutes long and doesn’t waste a single moment. Everything is central to the story and includes the perfect amount of focus on the actual creation of the car; even the failures and improvements get their proper showcase here. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are wonderful as two distinct characters that mix well together, and director James Mangold shoots the race scenes in a way that makes the final race one of the best theatrical experiences of the year.

PARASITE

A family in South Korea forms a relationship with an upper-class family which brings dire consequences.

Director Bong Joon-ho has made his masterpiece with this new thriller. This film astounds with a mixture of incredible filmmaking, writing and an amazingly diverse personality of cast members, and offers an intriguing look into class disparity and differences. A film like this receiving a wide release is rare, so I highly recommend taking the time to see it.

VOILA FRENCH BISTRO

My experience with French food is limited, but this month I was pleasantly surprised with the assignment of Voila French Bistro, located at 10135 E. Via Linda in Scottsdale.

I was lucky enough to chat with one of the owners, Ségolène, before eating and enjoyed the tale of how the couple landed here in Scottsdale.

Her husband, renowned chef JeanChristophe, has over 30 years de experience working for several famous French restaurants in France with Michelin ratings between 1 and 3 stars as the Relais Châteaux “Les Bas-Rupts” of Gérardmer. While visiting Arizona on vacation, the couple fell in love with Scottdale – prompting them to move here and purchase Voilà in October of 2015.

Running the quaint restaurant, Jean-Christophe is the chef bringing everything he has learned from working under some of the best chefs in France - while Ségolène is the face in the front of the house, making sure that you enjoy every moment you are with them.

The menu is an amazing mixture of traditional French dishes. Hors d’oeuvres include French Onion Soup, cheese plates, scallops, salads, escargot, and more. The main course offers something a dish for everyone, including seared pan duck foie gras, sole filet, surf and turf, salmon, chicken puff pastry and even a chef special ground duck burger.

With all these great options, you’ll

want to make sure to save room for dessert – they serve the best souffles, macarons, crème brulee….and the list goes on.

My choice when diving into something new was the Chef’s choice. Leaving it in the hands of the chef can be perilous for those of you with a sensitive pallet, but if you enjoy food and are adventurous, this is by far the most exciting way to enjoy new dishes.

Tonight, Ségolène first brought me an hors d’oeuvre of fromages. For the next dish, I was surprised by a seafood bouillabaisse that was not even on the menu. Now I am not inclined to typically order this dish but that’s the chance you take when leaving it up to your hosts…and I am so glad that I did! This dish was amazing and included big chunks of mussels, fish, and shrimp in a flavorful broth. I am forever changed and while I am unsure if others will be able to live up to Gros’s creation, I will be ordering this again! As for dessert, I don’t know how you can go somewhere that serves a souffle without ordering one. Are they all good? No - but you have to try, because when you get one that is done right, it is heaven. I was thrilled when I was presented with the raspberry-chocolate. Each bite was better than the last.

Voila is easily a must for anyone in town who simply loves food. If you love French food, then you would be a fool not to visit at least once. I guarantee that once you go, you will be back!

WORLD’S LARGEST TOURING TYRANNOSAURUS REX, VICTORIA,

TO MAKE DEBUT AT ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER

ictoria, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton touring the world, is making her global debut at Arizona Science Center with a special exhibition that opened to the public on November 17. This world premiere exhibition will transport guests to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, bringing to life one of the most important discoveries in the history of paleontology and giving museum visitors the rare opportunity to visit the Cretaceous period where Victoria’s story will unfold in her natural habitat.

Victoria the T-Rex was officially announced to the scientific community as the second most complete T-Rex skeleton on record. Initially unearthed outside Faith, South Dakota in 2013, Victoria has undergone years of meticulous research and restoration in order to earn this claim. Victoria’s completeness and unique pathologies have

provided paleontologists with a wealth of insights into the species that will be studied for years to come.

Embarking on a five-year tour across the world, this immersive exhibition produced by IMG was developed in partnership with a dedicated group of research collaborators and paleontologists. WHAT THE TRUCK?! TESLA FINALLY UNVEILS “CYBERTRUCK”

After much hint-dropping and hype build up via social media and interviews, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed a prototype of the new “Cybertruck” on November 21, the last day of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Tesla’s first ever truck has been a longtime coming. Musk has taken to Twitter to tease the electric pickup truck release (which he first announced way back in 2013) and earlier this year, Musk teased fans with a mysterious image of part of a truck that could either be interpreted as a hood or the bed of the pickup with a sleek, matching tonneau cover on board.

The reveal was certainly heart-stopping… or perhaps jaw-dropping is a better word. Musk spend upwards of 15 minutes hyping the Cybertruck one final time prior to its reveal.

However, not all claims may have been thoroughly tested prior to the reveal. While Musk’s claim that his new truck was “bulletproof” (at least to smaller firearms) panned out — as a demonstration of sledgehammering the sides resulted in no damage to be seen, the demonstration of the truck’s “unbreakable” metal glass windows didn’t go quite as well. When a metal ball was thrown at the first window, it shattered immediately. Musk said

Reactions lit up the social media world following the reveal. Some comments likened Tesla’s new truck to a drawing a kindergarten might have drawn. With the Cybertruck hype, Tesla has enjoyed a hearty rise in stock over the past few months — up 63 percent since August. But it will be interesting to see what kind of demand the truck, which will be sold in the fall of 2021, will attract in terms of actual buyers. Musk had admitted in one interview, “I actually don’t know if a lot of people will buy this pickup truck or not.”

One thing’s for certain, Tesla has created a unique cult-like following with its brand and adding a truck to the fleet is certainly an inclusive move for the company. While this might not be a truck for the masses, Musk had also said at one point, “If there’s only a small number of people that like the truck, I guess we’ll make a more conventional truck in the future.”
