Crisis Averted for Solar in Arizona. But We’re Not Out of the Woods yet.
By Erick O’DonnellIn late August, Arizona’s clean-energy community gasped and breathed a sigh of relief in quick succession A top official in the industry’s regulator proposed and then, in the face of public outrage, backed off from an extreme and abrupt cut to the solar export rate, which compensates owners of solar systems for the power they supply to the grid.
At an official hearing of the Arizona Corporation Commission on Aug. 24, Commissioner Nick Myers withdrew his proposal to cut the solar-energy purchase rate by 37 percent, which he had filed a mere 48 hours before to the shock and dismay of green-energy supporters.
The measure, which would have suddenly overturned a deal struck in 2017 to limit yearly reductions of the export rate to 10 percent, would have been a devastating blow to rooftop solar power in Arizona.
Arizona’s rooftop solar industry was sweating buckets. But it was only a respite; the commission only tabled the issue, leaving it to be discussed further on October 3.
Since harmful changes to the export rate still loom on the horizon, we thought it would be a good use of this space to clear up the confusion and misinformation around green energy. Then we’ll talk about the tricky situation these new developments leave us in as solarenergy investors and suppliers.
Myers bases his proposal on the common but misconceived notion that the export rate constitutes a “subsidy” of some kind to owners of rooftop solar. But as solar advocates have pointed out, what APS is paid retail and what it pays on a wholesale basis to other power suppliers (which mainly pump out greenhouse gases in addition to electricity) regularly exceeds the amount paid to owners of rooftop systems for their power, sometimes by a factor greater than ten.
“An APS customer installing rooftop solar today gets $76 [per megawatt-hour] for excess via the [buyback rate] while paying to APS $107 [per megawatt-hour] off-peak and $290 [per megawatt-hour] on peak,” wrote Court Rich on X (formerly Twitter), an attorney who advocates for solar companies. “Yet in July, APS regularly purchased wholesale power during day at $200 and even up to $900/ MWh. The RCP is a good deal, not a subsidy!”

The consistent use of the term “subsidy” reflects an ingrained misunderstanding on the part of commissioners
about not just the financial math but about the nature of the relationship between utilities and solar-sysetm owners, said Val Berechet, CEO of SunSolar Solutions.
As Berechet has argued, solar customers have invested their own wealth into their systems, just like a power-plant owner, and seek to recoup that risky investment by selling it to the power distributor at a not-so-generous price, just like a power-plant owner. Therefore, the money they earn should be understood similarly to how we understand the money paid to a power plant: as a fair (actually quite minimal) payment on a good supplied and as a return on a risky investment, not as a “subsidy.”
Some perspective on subsidies is in order. We all have to pay subsidies to the established energy industries in America—that is, the ones that have been spewing climate-destabilizing gases into the atmosphere for the past few centuries, making clean energy necessary in the first place.
Myers said at the August meeting that the solar industry is no longer an infant industry and should “stand on its own two feet.” He should tell that to the shareholders of the oil, gas, and coal corporations that continue to collect lavish public subsidies in the form of century-old tax breaks, to the tune of about $20 billion a year, with a fifth of that going to coal and 80 percent going to natural gas and crude oil, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
In fact, he might do well to remind himself once in a while about his own stated opposition to public subsidies for mature energy industries. In January, he voted for an “extension line allowance” for Southwest Gas, which imposes increased fees on existing customers to pay for a new natural-gas line, according to a report by 12 News. He justified that decision by pointing to the status quo, calling the deal “similar to line extension agreements virtually all utilities have.”
You may be wondering what that has to do with his principled opposition to subsidizing mature industries, which should “stand on [their] own two feet.” If so, we can’t help you there. Elected officials are expected to change the status quo to align it with their stated principles, not surrender to it with a shrug.
Let’s turn back to the issue at hand, the upcoming meeting. There is essentially zero chance that the commission will immediately act on Myers’ idea and cut the buyback rate by more than 10 percent on Oct.
11, in contravention of the 2017 agreement. But we have to acknowledge that by reopening the discussion that was supposedly resolved in 2017, the commission is embarking on a path that could take Arizona backwards, not forwards, in the state’s journey toward clean energy.
Berechet sees the potential for changes affecting not just prospective new investors in solar but also current system owners, ones who “locked in” their export rates by going solar before one of the commission’s yearly deadlines.
“There’s a slight chance that the deal in place for current system owners could be taken away,” Berechet said. “The whole thing could be wiped clean with a new program. The precedent could be overturned and their investments could completely go down the drain.”
The newly aggressive stance by the state’s anti-solar forces, as signaled by Myers’ proposal, raises tricky questions of strategy for green-energy advocates. If prosolar Arizonans try to counter the solar-suppression strategy with a mirror image, going on the offense by arguing that compensation for exported solar should be higher, it could be taken as support for renegotiating the prior deal, possibly assuring a process that could end up squelching future development of solar energy in Arizona. Potentially at stake is not only changing the rules for homeowners who want to add solar to homes going forward, but also for the over 100,000 Arizona homeowners who have already installed solar and were promised to be grandfathered in under certain rules.
“The jury’s out at this point about what we should do,” Berechet said. “Last meeting, we thought we would go there and would fight dropping the full ten percent. Essentially, Myers flipped it on us, and then we were begging for the ten percent.”
“It feels as if they changed the rules, as if they’ve moved the goal posts,” he added.
For solar-system owners, prospective owners, and supporters of the green-energy transition, the best approach is perhaps more simple and straightforward. “I think they should show up, and they should speak out about their investment in solar and what the actual value of solar is,” Berechet said.

City News Arizona’s Motorcycle Safety Gets a Boost AMSAF secures $100,000 for rider training scholarships.

Photo courtesy of Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation

THE SAFETY AND TRAINING OF ARIZONA’S MOTORCYCLISTS JUST GOT A SIGNIFICANT LIFT. The Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) recently celebrated the acquisition of a $100,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (AZGOHS). This grant accentuates AZGOHS’s commitment to AMSAF’s objective: to elevate motorcycle awareness and consequently reduce rider fatalities and injuries.
According to Mick Degn, AMSAF’s executive director, the emphasis is on continuity. “Our enthusiasm about awarding scholarships for educating both new and ongoing riders remains steadfast,” he notes. Degn also takes a moment to acknowledge AZGOHS director Jesse Torrez, expressing gratitude for his unwavering support in this shared vision of motorbike safety in the state.
To paint a broader picture, this scholarship initiative isn’t AMSAF’s maiden voyage. They’ve been at this for a while, having provided an impressive tally of over 5,000 scholarships in Arizona geared toward rider education. But they’re not resting on their laurels. The grant will facilitate:
• The cultivation of distinctive partnerships with local businesses, eyeing the reduction of crashes and fatalities.
• Investigations pinpointing perilous intersections and road patches notorious for motorcycle mishaps.
• Encouragement for more Arizonians to undergo rider training through attractive discount enticements.
• Engaging influential industry collaborators to amplify AMSAF’s mission through diverse events and outreach.

It’s about making rider education accessible. An elementary rider course in Arizona can burden an individual with up to a staggering $350. But with the AMSAF scholarship, only a modest $100 nonrefundable co-pay is required. A boon to every Arizonian motorbike enthusiast, details on availing of this scholarship are available at amsaf.org/scholarships.
Further, successfully clearing a rider’s skill course or mastering the in-person skills assessment is a prerequisite for the motorcycle endorsement (M) on the Arizona state driver’s license. The cherry on top? Most major insurers roll out enticing policy discounts for those who’ve accomplished this safety and training course.
Whether you’re a newbie on two wheels or a seasoned rider wanting to sharpen those riding reflexes, the Basic Rider Course (BRC) endorsed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) is your go-to.
AMSAF stands tall as Arizona’s beacon for rider and driver safety. With the state witnessing an escalating number of motorcycle-involved crashes, approaching 3,000 annually, AMSAF’s dual approach - bolstering motorcycle awareness among drivers and top-notch safety training for riders - is more crucial than ever.
For the latest in motorcycle news, safety tips, and more, visit amsaf.org.

With over 1,000 glass pumpkins handmade by acclaimed artist Gregory Tomb available for purchase, the Glass Pumpkin Patch will be held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 20 to 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Presented in partnership with Desert Foothills Library, the Book Festival will showcase approximately 70 awardwinning local authors and will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for both events, which will be held at the Holland

With a lifelong passion for glass art, Tomb has been awarded “best in glass” and served as the featured artist at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the Hampton Fine Art Festival, the Stuart Art Festival, and the Scottsdale Artfest; his colorful creations have also been featured in numerous museums and magazines. In his work, Tomb incorporates classic techniques of furnace, fused, flame-worked and cold-worked glass, while also exploring new processes and ways to use glass and light.
Now in its second year, the Desert Foothills Book Festival was inspired by a group of local authors seeking to personally connect with book lovers and

promote an appreciation of reading and the literary arts. Featuring authors from the greater Phoenix, Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree areas who represent a diverse array of genres – including fiction, non-fiction, children’s, romance, young adult, historical, memoirs, and more – the festival invites both kids and adults alike to engage with the authors, learn about their creative process, and purchase signed books. There will also be a fun raffle for free door prizes and a paid raffle for baskets of prizes worth at least $100. Proceeds from the event will support the Holland Community Center’s program, Creative Kids: Tell Me a Story, which engages children in the literary arts by teaching them how to write and draw a picture book from start to finished product.
Serving North Scottsdale, Cave Creek, and Carefree, the Holland Community Center is a unique partnership dedicated to enriching the Desert Foothills community by celebrating arts and culture, treasuring the desert environment, assisting those in need and encouraging lifelong learning. Bikers for Boobies AZ, the renowned Arizona-based charity, has revved up its engines for the 14th year in a row to combat breast cancer. Teaming up with prominent local businesses and bands, the charity invites community members to be part of this exceptional cause.
The 14th Annual motorcycle event, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14, is backed by Arizona Bike Week, J&P Cycles Scottsdale, Chuck Franklin Law, and over 20 Valley businesses.
“It is hard to believe that we have been doing this for 14 years,” says Bikers for Boobies AZ President Shelley Brorsen “It’s a great feeling knowing that together, we are raising awareness and fighting all types of cancer with the emphasis on breast

cancer. We’re hoping to raise more funding and awareness through this event.”
Kicking off at J&P Cycles, 8606 E. Shea Blvd., in Scottsdale, the day's journey will conclude with a grand parking lot party at the Dirty Dogg Saloon, 10409 N. Scottsdale Rd. Attendees can look forward to live performances from local musical talents, an array of raffle prizes, a silent auction, and delectable bites from the popular Pizza Butcher food truck.
Bikers for Boobies AZ's commendable legacy since its inception in 2009 includes providing over 1,000 women with free mammograms. Through its grants program, the charity has also distributed more than $200,000 for survival and medical grants. Furthermore, the charity has generously donated between $1,000 to $10,000 to various organizations aiding families and individuals grappling with
cancer. “We are so grateful,” says Treasurer Laura Rasmussen.

Barro’s Pizza also offers wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta, glutenfree pizza options, dessert, beer and wine.
Since its inception in 2012, the Barro’s Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway has granted $105,000 to Arizona students. ANTI-GRAVITY GYROS Kids’
By Sari CusterGravity got you down? Explore ways to overcome it by building and testing an anti-gravity device. Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that objects at rest tend to

stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion (unless acted on by an outside force). Centripetal forces are any forces (gravitational, electrical/atomic, or tension) that move inward, toward the fixed center of the circular motion. In this activity, the string attached to the cup creates a centripetal force and
when the circular motion of the cup moves faster than the horizontal motion (inertia) of the water/objects. As a result, the water/objects stay in the cup.
SUPPLIES
• A 9 oz. paper or plastic cup
• One (1) sharpened pencil
• One to five (1-5) pennies or marbles
• Water
• Two 2-ft. long pieces of string
HOW TO
1. Using the pencil, punch one hole in the cup ½ inch below the rim.
2. Punch a second hole on the opposite side of the cup ½ inch below the rim.
3. Thread one piece of string through each hole and tie them off.
4. Place pennies, marbles, or water in the cup.

5. Investigate how you can prevent the materials from falling out of the cup when upside down.
Repeat steps four through five with pennies, marbles, and water.
GUIDING QUESTIONS
1. What direction does gravity point?

2. What is inertia?
3. What things resist the force of gravity by moving in the opposite direction?

4. How can you prevent gravity from making the water spill out of the cup when it is turned upside down without placing your hand over the top of the cup?
5. When you tested your anti-gravity device, what was it that prevented the penny, marble, or water from spilling out?
You can learn a bunch more about gravity and more when you visit the Arizona Science Center. Be sure to stop by the Dorrance Planetarium and Forces of Nature! Visit azscience.org for more information!

ETHOS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

Why you shouldn’t be worried about hormone replacement therapy causing breast cancer.
By Dr. Alexandra Mayer, Ethos Integrative MedicineIn the heart of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re committed to empowering women with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health. Unfortunately, myths and misconceptions often deter women from exploring beneficial treatments like hormone replacement therapy (HRT), fearing its association with breast cancer risk. We’re here to clear the air on these misconceptions. Here’s why you shouldn’t be afraid of HRT causing breast cancer.
UNDERSTANDING HORMONES:
THE BODY’S MESSENGERS
Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers. They are created by your endocrine glands and relay vital information through the bloodstream to your organs and tissues. These essential messengers regulate our energy levels, metabolism, mood, body temperature, libido, cognitive function, and reproductive health.
As we enter menopause, typically in our late 40s to mid 50s, our estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone
production decreases. These hormonal shifts can have a massive impact on your health, inducing hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, libido problems, and sleep disturbances.
WHAT IS HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY?
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) works to provide the body with the necessary hormones, alleviating the discomfort caused by hormonal imbalances. HRT is available in various forms, including pills, patches, creams, gels, injections, and pellets. However, not all HRT is created equally.
Since synthetic hormones are chemically altered and not identical to human hormones, they may not be recognized by the body, potentially resulting in various side effects. In contrast, bioidentical hormones are derived from natural plant sources, and mirror the structure of hormones naturally produced by the body. These bioidentical hormones closely replicate the body’s own hormones, minimizing the side effects often associated with synthetic hormones. As a result, many patients find bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) to be a more attractive treatment option.
DEBUNKING THE MYTH THAT HRT CAUSES BREAST CANCER:
Initial studies from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) have significantly contributed to the misconception surrounding HRT and breast cancer risk. The findings from 20 years ago indicated a 26% increase in breast cancer risk among women taking estrogen and synthetic progestin compared to those not taking hormones. Unfortunately, the media interpreted that as 26 in 100 women will get breast cancer. However, this increase actually translates to less than one additional breast cancer case per 1,000 women, per year.
A recent study conducted in the UK analyzed approximately 43,000 newly diagnosed breast cancer cases between 1995 and 2014, and reaffirmed the WHI results. Women using estrogenonly HRT did NOT show an elevated risk of developing breast cancer when compared to non-users.
THE KEY TAKEAWAY:
The risks proclaimed in the media aren’t what we thought them to be! Contrary to widespread belief, the only group of women with an increased breast cancer risk were those taking estrogen and synthetic progestin. Women using estrogen and bioidentical progesterone had NO increased breast cancer risk.
Additional studies have found that maintaining an active lifestyle and healthy weight are two of the best ways to reduce breast cancer risk long-term. Alcohol intake has also been correlated with breast cancer risk, so limiting consumption to a few drinks per week can be greatly beneficial. Lastly, being proactive with your health by getting yearly mammograms should not be overlooked.
Debunking the myths surrounding HRT requires a thorough understanding of evolving scientific evidence, hormone formulations, and the advantages of a personalized treatment approach. We can confidently say that utilizing bioidentical hormones not only enhances the safety and efficacy of HRT, but also provides a more tailored and individualized experience.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR WOMEN:

Hormonal shifts are not something you “just have to deal with.” For many women, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy has transformed their health. BHRT has been shown to alleviate the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and night sweats, stabilize mood and reduce irritability, improve vaginal health and libido, support healthy weight management and cognitive function, and improve skin health.
At Ethos Integrative Medicine, we prioritize assessing for potential risk factors, especially when considering any form of treatment. Our approach to care involves a comprehensive evaluation of your health history, and conducting frequent, precise lab tests before recommending any bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. With the right provider, thorough lab testing, advanced cancer screening, and tailored care, BHRT is a safe and effective solution to alleviate peri-menopausal and menopausal symptoms, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life!

Neighbors Hello Neighbor!
lucky to have such wonderful people in my life. I am an only child, and my parents also live in the Valley.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… as a proponent of Stoic philosophy my answer should be, "There's almost nothing that I truly couldn't live without,” but the Scottsdale summer recently reminded me that the answer is air conditioning.
MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “The Princess Bride” because it has it all: action, comedy, romance, intrigue, and so many quotable moments!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a scientist or a video game developer. I worked with computers for a bit but ended up taking a slightly different path in life.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Feeling Good” by Michael Bublé.
MY LIFE IS… a gift. Each day is a new opportunity to improve in some way, to find and share joy or inspiration.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… various travel experiences with my parents when I was younger. Being able to see and experience a variety of cultures, foods, and locations is an incredible opportunity to view the world as more than just our small piece of life.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Ireland. The countryside seems incredibly beautiful and peaceful, and I look forward to seeing it someday soon.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… from one of the original stoics named Seneca. “We suffer more from imagination than from reality.” The idea being we need to get out of our head and stop the cycle of worry about circumstances beyond our control, and instead focus on the present moment and how we can best move forward from here.
HI, MY NAME IS… Nathan Landis and I am the creator of @notquitestoic on social media, a professional poker player, photographer, and an artist.
I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR TWO YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… we have so much variety close at hand: entertainment, dining, hiking, and so much more!
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… some form of exercise after breakfast, working on @notquitestoic, heading to a local casino for some poker, and unwinding afterwards with a book, show, or spending time with friends. My latest venture, @notquitestoic (found on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter), is where I ask AI to generate quotes based on the teachings of stoic philosophy. I share these results, paired with some graphics, on social media daily. They’re sometimes inspiring and sometimes just fun.
MY FAMILY IS… constantly supportive, and I’m very
THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… how can I pick just one? My parents. The original Stoic philosophers. My friends. Nearly everyone around me has imparted some form of wisdom that motivates me to keep moving forward and improving.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… watching a friend's new kitten trying to figure out existence while playing with one of its toys.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… waking up without an alarm, being productive, seeing friends briefly, and relaxing at home. Plus, something in nature when it isn’t 115 degrees outside.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Arizona Helping Hands. They provide help to Arizona’s foster families and children, from beds to clothes to essentials to back-to-school supplies for some of those who need it the most.

Phoenix Theatre Group Delights People Living with Dementia

It’s a little magical how a small theater troupe can walk through the door and instantly transform the space around them.
That’s exactly what five talented actors do so effortlessly as part of Phoenix Theatre’s Partners That Heal program. They travel all over the Valley, using improv, music, storytelling, and movement to engage and delight audiences of every age and ability.
Recently, they visited Hospice of the Valley’s new Dementia Care and Education Campus in central Phoenix. They spent time with residents at the assisted living center, members of the adult day club and preschoolers in the adjoining child center. Working in perfect harmony, they lead people who are living with dementia on a spontaneous journey that unlocks their imaginations.
“We all have that child inside of us and we let them be kids again. We give them a chance to play,” says PTH member Mike Lawler. “And we feel like we’re part of the care team.”
Marshal Glass agrees. “This light goes on inside of them and it’s just wonderful to see. Then the staff tells us the patient’s never done that before!”
The actors harness joy by sparking happy memories with familiar songs and stories.
“We come in and people who are showing no emotion or expression immediately start remembering moments,” shares Sally Jo Bannow. “Somehow, it taps into their imagination and creativity.”
“We want to get a smile on people’s faces. I get chills just thinking about it,” Kim Manning gushes. “That’s the whole reason we’re here.”
“You can tell they’re so connected and waiting for more,” adds Brian Sweis. “It’s so rewarding, and we just feel honored to be a part of that.”
Partners That Heal has visited more than 70,000 people in our community over the last decade. “They appeal to preschoolers; they appeal to someone who’s in their 70s and 80s with dementia. They meet everyone where they’re at,” says Dementia Campus Enrichment Coordinator Angela Hofler.

“Their stories might be about someone’s favorite animal, or maybe we’re all going on an African safari, and the next minute we’re waterskiing in the ocean having ice cream. They bring so much fun to us. We are lucky to have them spreading their magic and touching so many lives!”

Guard Your Title from Fraud

If you own real property in Maricopa County, you could be victimized by title fraud. The number one target for these criminals is free and clear property, particularly vacant land. What happens is the fraudster will list your home or land for sale pretending to be you. They do everything through email with the agent and title company. Next thing you know, someone has purchased your property, the criminal has the money, and you have an angry
owner. The best protection is to sign up for Maricopa Title Alert. They will send you an email whenever there is activity on your property. Go to https://tinyyurl.com/ srxcp5hs, or call your favorite Realtor such as Those Callaways 480-596-5751 and they will sign you up!
PROTECT YOURSELF
The number one thing you can do to protect yourself is to take your wallet or purse to a copy machine and make a hard copy of everything, your ID, driver’s license, passport card, insurance cards, credit cards, a blank check––everything, making sure to copy both sides of all materials. The backs of credit cards usually have important 800 numbers in case they are lost or stolen. Now add copies of your utility statements, mortgage statements, everything with an important number. When you are all done and have everything in one folder or envelope, make a second copy and then keep these two copies of your life in two separate places - your home,
your office, a safe deposit box - wherever they can be safe from disaster, including fire, flood, theft, anything. Now you are safe from life’s disasters.
Yes, you can do all this with the camera on your phone but then I have a friend whose phone was stolen. You can email it all to yourself and attempt to hide it in your email history, but hackers can get into that in minutes and search a couple of key words such as credit or account number and then they own your information.
Joseph Callaway is with Those Callaways eXp Realty and has been selling houses in The Magic 85254 Zip Code for more than 26 years.

Planning Your Estate with the Revocable Living Trust

Afriend recently told me a story about a woman she knew who did her trust with a company that offered steep discounts. You may already know what’s coming. She met with an attorney for less than 15 minutes. Then, when she signed her trust documents, she was with a salesman who spent hours trying to sell her an annuity. That is one of the problems that often arise with the companies who offer cut-rate deals on a trust.
But what about the other problems? If a trust isn’t put together properly, it won’t provide the support for you and your family when the time comes to use it. Here are a few things that a good trust needs to provide.
Done properly, the trust makes it easy for someone to step in to assist when you need help. However, often trusts done by non-attorneys fail in this role. The trustee appointment only says what happens if the trust owner dies – there is no appointment of a person to serve on incapacity of the trust grantor. To deal with this, we must file expensive court proceedings to appoint a trustee for incapacity when needed. In the meantime, bills go unpaid, or finances deteriorate, since the family cannot move forward.
The trusts we prepare in our office avoid these issues. We are clear about how a successor trustee is appointed to step in for you. In addition, even if all of your named trustees are unable to serve, we have a backup plan to get the right

trustee in place without having to go to court. A well drafted and well thought out trust will have these kinds of fail-safe provisions that an estate plan, that is only for the purposes of an annuity sales pitch, won’t contain.
Next, a properly formed and funded trust will hold your assets and upon death provide for the transfer of assets while avoiding a probate and a public disclosure of everything you own. The trust appoints the person you name to handle your estate, and they can do so quickly and in private. First and foremost, the trust first needs to put forward the proper plan for you. I once reviewed a trust done by an annuity company that did not even contain beneficiaries. None. The beneficiaries were left out of the trust document, not even contained in a document attached to the trust (which is also a bad idea).
A trust that is tailored to you will not only name your beneficiaries but take their situations into account. Is someone receiving important government benefits? The trust can hold their share in a special needs trust. Has someone had drug or alcohol issues? We can include substance abuse provisions to protect them. Have a blended family and want to include your spouse and still have your separate children inherit? That takes planning with an attorney, and more than just 15 minutes total time.
It’s important to plan for your estate, and it is important that you do it right. Our office, which includes me and my associate attorney Travis Meyers, would be happy to assist you in doing it properly. Call us at 602-375-6752 and check out our website at libbybanks.com.

Entertainment Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony BealIN THEATERS
The third installment in this series once again delivers what fans expect: Denzel Washington brutalizing bad guys in unique and gory ways. This time around, director Antoine Fuqua infuses the action scenes with a horror-like atmosphere, showing McCall stalking his prey from the shadows and using distorted angles, thanks to the work of DP Robert Richardson. This approach helps the film stand out from its predecessors, even though it sometimes reverts to a more conventional style in certain scenes and exhibits pacing issues reminiscent of earlier installments. Intriguingly, the film also delves into the deeper aspects of McCall's character, questioning if he can ever find true peace and whether there's more to his life than violence. These reflective moments create a striking contrast to the film's brutal scenes. This is arguably the best installment of the series, and it could serve as a fitting conclusion.
ON HULU
performances as surprisingly welldeveloped characters, especially given the film's brief duration. The movie serves as a testament to what can be achieved with limited resources and time. I eagerly anticipate Rodriguez's next project.

“Bottoms”
A group of girls start a fight club to try to get with their crushes.
“Bottoms” is a true-blue contender for the title of most anarchic movie of the year, given the reality it presents. Every character and scenario is exaggerated to the max, and it’s an absolute blast to watch everyone adopt the most extreme approaches to everything, from singing to fighting. The superb cast sells it all, from leads Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri to even the minor background characters. Emma Seligman's direction is simpler compared to her debut, "Shiva Baby," but it complements the tone of the film. The visuals and tropes of a typical comedy (paired with a familiar soundtrack) contrast sharply with the Mad Max-esque actions on screen. It's a truly unique and entertaining piece.

“The
Equalizer 3”
Robert McCall finds himself defending a small Italian town from the mafia.
“Miguel

Wants to Fight”
A young man wants to get in a fight before his life goes through a major change.
Short and sweet aptly describes Oz Rodriguez's new movie. At its core, the film presents a moral tale about the perils of succumbing to peer pressure and allowing fiction to shape one's worldview. Rodriguez adeptly navigates the young cast through two contrasting styles: reality and imagination, which feel like distinct films yet seamlessly blend together. This is not to undermine the cast's contribution; they certainly hold their own, delivering heartfelt
“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”

Two BFFs find their friendship tested against the dangers of middle school drama.
A more traditional comedy, this film isn't particularly memorable, but it's not bad either. Sunny and Sadie Sandler are the clear standouts of the movie. The latter's deadpan delivery and the former's exaggerated humor truly make them shine. The film's primary drawback is its repetitiveness, often recycling the same beats to pad its runtime. Its structure is peculiar, seemingly introducing specific plot points either too early or too late. While I appreciate its attempts at originality and its refreshing depiction of Judaism compared to other

TIS THE SEASON TO BE SPOOKY

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom PadillaIs doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain?
You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.

Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.
Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love.
Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What To Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
