The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Returns October 23 at WestWorld of Scottsdale Photos Courtesy of Dave Seibert THE BENTLEY SCOTTSDALE POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS: PRESENTED BY TALKING STICK RESORT IS ONCE AGAIN MAKING HISTORY. On Saturday, October 23, at WestWorld of Scottsdale, attendees can start the day with a brand-new field-side Scottsdale Morning Beer Festival from 10 a.m. to noon. The Polo Party will also debut DJ MPower who will be spinning his electric house music sets in various tents, alongside several of the Valley’s top DJs. The 22-year-old inspiration with Down syndrome has overcome many challenges to DJ on a professional level. Also entertaining on site is jazz musician Doc Jones and acoustic guitarists. As always, fans can expect to see four thrilling and action-packed polo matches. Since its inception, the event has traditionally brought in many of the world’s most talented and notable polo stars. It is only fitting for 2021 that polo fans will see the return of GQ model and undoubtedly one of America’s best players, Nic Roldan, who returns representing the former champion Aspen Valley Polo Club, owned by Marc and Melissa Ganzi. Music to Our Ears: Lakeshore Music Moves to the new Ravenscroft Hall THE NORTH SCOTTSDALE JAZZ MUSIC SCENE IS GETTING A NEW NEIGHBOR. Lakeshore Music, which has grown into one of the most-respected jazz concert series in the U.S. during its 12 seasons at Tempe Center for the Arts, is moving to Ravenscroft Hall, a beautiful new state-of-the-art venue in North Scottsdale. The campus includes Jazzbird, a first-class jazz lounge, which, starting Fridays this month, will host music from popular and up-and-coming local musicians accompanied by a fine selection of wine and local craft beers.
Barron, a National Endowment for the Arts and American Jazz Hall of Fame pianist, opens the building on October 16 with an already sold-out performance. Cuban pianist Harold Lopéz-Nussa, whose work reflects the range and richness of Cuban music and its embrace of jazz improvisation and interaction, is up next on October 30.

Boo & New at Scottsdale Quarter October 18-23 Community Invited to a Week-long Fall Festival Celebrating the Completion of Scottsdale Quarter SCOTTSDALE QUARTER IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE ITS PLANS TO COMMEMORATE THE COMPLETION OF THE FINAL PHASE OF THE SHOPPING CENTER WITH A WEEKLONG FALL CELEBRATION FOR THE COMMUNITY. Many people fear getting older, as it is viewed as a time of having to give up what you love to do because of “normal aches and pains”...Fake News! Many of our clients are over 50, and in the beautiful Phoenix winter they do everything from hiking, golfing, lifting, biking, dancing, running, and riding horses to name a few. None of these activities are considered to be “easy on the body” but they do them anyway because it makes them happy, and that’s really what life is about. So why is it that some people see age as just a number - while others use it as a reason to stop doing certain things due to aches and pains? After age 50, the number one reason I see people avoiding activities they want to do is because of pain. The second most common reason is they were told to stop the activities that they were doing, because it was thought that those activities were causing pain.

Let’s explain with a case Study: Our Client “Sarah” is 52 years old, and has had back pain since college. I’ll let her tell her amazing story. “I would have spells off and on over the years where my back would go out and I would be down for a week or two. I have always been active, and I enjoy exercising and playing sports especially with my family, so it was a continual frustration to be out of commission during those times. I’m so happy to be able to get back to exercising and playing basketball with my boys, without having to worry about being down for several days from overdoing it. It has been wonderful to learn that my back issues were not just something I had to live with as a result of getting older! We have to take a few days off here and there, and find that a warm-up is actually necessary (who knew?!). We start to get a little gun-shy of the activities that cause pain, because we have seen friends and family who have ignored pain, and ended up in worse shape. As people start to have to limit activity, they start seeking help. At first everything seems to help a little bit, but the relief doesn’t last long, and it doesn’t seem to translate to them being able to continue being active. So they seek advice from a medical provider, and many times a well-intentioned provider will advise them to find a new activity, and to stop doing certain exercises. It’s not the provider’s fault - our medical system is overloaded, and everyone does what they can to keep up. But many healthcare providers are NOT current on medical research when it comes to physical pain, meaning you’re likely to get advice based on the “oldschool” way of thinking. For example...diagnosing pain based on x-rays and MRI’s… If your x-ray shows “bone on bone arthritis” you automatically need a joint replacement. If your MRI shows a meniscus tear or bulging disc, you automatically need surgery.

On a Mission to Promote Mental Wellbeing and Combat Social Isolation By Lauren Subia IF THE PANDEMIC HAS TAUGHT US ANYTHING, IT’S THAT ISOLATION AND LONELINESS ARE REAL ISSUES THAT HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON PERSONAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, social isolation and loneliness significantly increases the risk for premature mortality and other health issues, especially as we get older. Shruti Gurudanti and Mayank Mishra, who both call 85254 home, are working hard to raise awareness about these detrimental effects.

“The one thing common amongst all of us regardless of where we come from is that we will get old, if we’re lucky! It is a problem that when you age, you will lose your ability to drive at some point, and that automatically leads to you having less interaction with your community, family, and friends,” says Gurudanti. “A shrinking of your social circle is unfortunately inevitable unless you can figure out a way to adapt to technology to stay connected. For that we need to build technology that is accessible to everyone.” This is what kickstarted their mission to combat social isolation and loneliness by building technology that is easy-to-use and thus their social venture, Televeda, was born. Founded by Mishra and Gurudanti in 2018, Televeda is a virtual events management platform that helps recreation centers, community centers, senior centers, hospital systems, and nonprofits to effortlessly deliver all their programs in a virtual/hybrid format and come into the modern world. This allows individuals to feel connected to their local communities no matter where they are.
“Millions of people nationwide depend on our local community centers, churches, etc. to find friendships and resources. Our goal is to help these organizations to expediently and smoothly bring their programs and activities directly to an individual within the comfort of their own home,” says Gurudanti. “Having a virtual/hybrid option is no longer a luxury but rather a consumer expectation today. So, at Televeda, we’ve focused on building an accessible platform that helps the most tech-shy audience to virtually connect with their local church, local recreational center, anything that’s happening in their cities, or any sort of program that’s being offered. They don’t have to feel disconnected from their community, family and friends just because they cannot drive!” In addition to Televeda, Gurudanti volunteers as a board member for Duet: Partners In Health & Aging. Community October 24 Trick Or Treat Family Fun Run Helps Local Children in Need
C
hildhelp, a nonprofit organization advocating for abused and neglected children, is giving residents the chance to get out, get active and make a difference for the love of a child. The community is invited to participate in the Childhelp Wings Trick or Trot Family Fun Run on October 24 at McCormick Ranch Golf Course in Scottsdale. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. with the staggered start beginning at 8 a.m. Proceeds from this event benefit the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline and Childhelp’s “Speak Up Be Safe” program. Throughout the pandemic, calls to the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, housed predominantly in Scottsdale, have spiked as high as 46% over the previous year. Childhelp’s “Speak Up Be Safe” program helps children and teens learn the skills to prevent or interrupt cycles of neglect, bullying, and all forms of child abuse. At the event, there will be a one-mile and a 2.8-mile route on the Palm Course, an oasis in the desert that offers panoramic mountain vistas beyond vast, sparkling lakes. Come as you are or dress up in your favorite costume to have some fun and take pictures, all for a good cause. Candy and games will be available at each hole around the golf course. At the finish line there will be refreshments, snacks, upbeat music, and a raffle to celebrate participation from everyone.
There are opportunities to support the event as a sponsor, fundraiser (individual or team), donor, or participant. The cost to participate is $25 per individual and tickets for two, three, or five-person families (not including children under 12 and under) are $50. Sponsorships include the Skeleton Tee at $1,000, the Zombie Zone at $2,000, the Ghost Racer at $3,000, and the Shining Title at $5,000. Each Ghost Racer and Shining Title sponsor will have its logo design placed on signage at specific holes around the course. Other donations or corporate gifts can be made online. Founded in 1959 by Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson and headquartered in Scottsdale, Childhelp aims to meet the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs of abused, neglected and at-risk children. Trash and Recycling Collection Days Change November 1 Information and Graphic Courtesy of the City of Scottsdale The City of Scottsdale recently announced changes to the city’s trash and recycling collection days. According to the city, this change will improve efficiency and make it easier to process recyclables. Trash and recycling routes have not changed in more than 20 years, becoming unbalanced due to growth. The new collection schedule is based on the route size and the amount of solid waste and recycling collected. Residents who do not have a change in collection days may see a difference in collection times due to route changes.
Trash and recycling containers should be placed on the street with wheels against the curb by 5 a.m. on collection days. Operating more efficiently means the city can balance the size of collection routes to provide more consistent service, preserve the longevity of collection vehicles by carrying the right sized loads, and not overload the processing center. New collection routes begin November 1. To determine your new collection days, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov, search “Collection Day,” then find your service area on the map or use the Find My Service Day Tool, also found on the website. ecently a client asked whether his Revocable Living Trust (RLT) would protect his assets from his creditors. The answer is no. While the RLT is a great estate planning and probate avoidance tool, it is not an asset protection trust.
Giving the inheritance in trust could have protected the inheritance from the bankruptcy creditors and could have given him a fresh start.
TRUSTS CAN PROTECT THE INHERITANCE IN CASE OF YOUR BENEFICIARY’S DIVORCE OR DEATH My client liked the idea of the irrevocable trust and asked me about protecting his daughter’s inheritance from her husband. The marriage was rocky, and he was concerned about what would happen if she decided to divorce after getting her inheritance.

I told him that while his RLT didn’t protect him from his debts, we could structure the inheritance for his children to protect them – and not just from potential creditors. We do this by directing in the RLT that each beneficiary receives their share in their own irrevocable trust. TRUSTS CAN KEEP AN INHERITANCE OUT OF THE HANDS OF CREDITORS The beneficiaries’ trusts do give them asset protection. An outright gift of the inheritance can result in a beneficiary’s creditors snatching all your hard-earned money. For instance, in 2008, Son started a business, but in the economic downturn, the business failed. He filed bankruptcy. A month after filing, Mom died, leaving him everything in an outright distribution. It

I explained that if his daughter received her inheritance in trust, it could prevent her from losing part of it in a divorce. The assets held in trust won’t be divided up, because the inherited trust is separate property, belonging only to the daughter and not her husband.
I told him the irrevocable trust can provide protection for beneficiaries who might not manage the inheritance well, whether due to addiction issues or just being bad with money. Leaving the money in trust doesn’t mean you don’t provide for them. The trust provides that the trustee can make discretionary distributions to the beneficiary for their health, education, maintenance, and support.

Aloha Timepieces Inspiring others to live with compassion and give back to the community one watch at a time By Michelle Talsma Everson

W
hile the word “aloha” is traditionally used to greet someone, according to Scottsdale entrepreneur Spencer Leu, it also has a deeper meaning. “The deeper meaning of ‘aloha’ is peace, love and—most of all—compassion,” Leu shares. As the founder and owner of Aloha Timepieces—a luxury watch brand—the concept of compassion is deeply engrained in everything Leu does when it comes to his business. In fact, the company’s mission is, “To 16 • October 2021 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
inspire others to live with aloha while helping others with the profits generated.” A PERSONAL JOURNEY TO ALOHA Leu shares that he used to be a CFO of a corporate technology company. “I was blessed to be successful in my career, but I still wasn’t happy,” he explains. “I left my career to find happiness. After traveling the world and acquiring more experiences, I learned that compassion is one of the keys to happiness. You need to have compassion for yourself and others to be truly happy.”
During his travels, Leu also fell in love with timepieces and watch making. He laughs as he admits to “geeking out” over timepiece components and technology. In early 2018 he went on a mission to create his perfect watch—quite a feat since he had no experience in the watch industry before this. “Who would create a highquality Swiss-made timepiece during the smart watch revolution? Me,” he jokes. His first two variants of Aloha timepieces were ready in June 2019 after multiple revisions. With a goal of using his business to give back (or, in his own words, myhyperlocalnews.com

My hope for customers who wear the watches is that they are inspired and reminded to live with compassion, and to give back to causes that matter to them. Through this business, I’m challenging myself to live like that as well.

All these donations have happened in a short timeframe as—while Aloha Timepieces entered the market in 2019—Leu put the business’ marketing and promotional efforts on hold through most of the pandemic. “My first professional, big industry show was supposed to take place in March 2020—but it was canceled due to the pandemic,” he shares.

Now that the world is back to the “new normal,” Leu is hoping to get the Aloha brand of watches back in the public eye so that more customers can enjoy them, and he can use the profits to give back to other charitable causes. “My hope for customers who wear the watches is that they are inspired and reminded to live with compassion, and to give back to causes that matter to them,” he says. “Through this business, I’m challenging myself to live like that as well.”

ith more sunny days than any other state and a growing need for well-paying jobs, Arizona has a big opportunity to take center stage in solar industry. In order to make this a reality, we need our lawmakers to pass forward-thinking infrastructure legislation that will help solar companies like ours put more solar panels on more rooftops in the Valley and across the state. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Arizona now gets about 8% of its power from solar. Policies like the Solar Investment Tax Credit can encourage more solar energy installations by reducing taxes for Arizonans that go solar. Extending this policy for ten years gives businesses like ours the green light to hire more people to meet the demand, bringing new jobs to the Phoenix area. We also need more support to encourage domestic manufacturing so we can make more solar components here at home. Investing in solar production capacity will only lead to more employment in our state, and as we create these jobs, that means more opportunities to diversify our workforce and provide high-paying careers for women, people of color, and workers transitioning from the fossil fuel industry. That’s why it’s so critical for Congress to pass strong pro-solar legislation. We have an incredible opportunity to boost our economy, fight climate change, and create well-paying jobs for families in our state. Failing to pass these provisions in the upcoming infrastructure legislation could have catastrophic outcomes that means less prosperity in our state. How Do Interest Rates Affect Home Prices? ow do interest rates affect home prices? First, let’s discuss buyer pools. This concept says that at any given price point on any given day there are a certain number of qualified buyers out there looking for property. Also, it is easily understood that the buyer pool gets smaller as the price point increases. In other words, just making up numbers for the example, if there are 500 buyers out there qualified to buy at $500,000, then there are probably 200 buyers at $1 million and maybe only 20 buyers at $2 million.
Now, imagine what happens if rates jump. Suddenly, all the buyers out there now qualify for less house and, like dominoes, the buyer pools tumble down to the next price point, and with the next interest rates increase, to the next price point after that. What this means to the seller of a $600,000 home is that the number of buyers who might buy this home is now reduced to half of what it was before the rate increase. Plus, these remaining buyers are now disillusioned. They suddenly must settle for less than they expected the day before. Some will settle and others may abandon the pursuit altogether.
Now, we are talking qualified buyers, meaning buyers who have met with a lender and determined how much house they can buy. Part of that determination is the current interest rate. For instance, again using made up numbers for illustration, if the rate is 2.5%, then the buyer may be qualified for a $400,000 loan. But, if that rate goes to 3.5%, then this buyer is now only qualified to buy a $300,000 home.
So, how do interest rates affect home prices? If rates go up, then demand goes down, potentially taking prices with it. Now, all this takes place in a subtle, fuzzy way. People say the market has softened or we are shifting to a buyer’s market. Prices become more negotiable, and we all absorb the change because, after all, only a small percentage of us are selling at any given time. The only time this becomes important to you

3. STAY SAFE Before you bid farewell to your trick-ortreaters (or walk alongside your little monsters), have a safety briefing prior to scouting for candy. 2. DO CREEPY CRAFTS Cheap, easy, and adorable… do I have your attention? For Halloween gifting or parties, I’m all about the super simple ghost lollipop. It’s my non-fail October go-to. All you need is rounded lollipops, coffee filters, small rubber bands, thin black ribbon, and a sharpie. For each ghost pop, use 2-3 coffee filters and wrap them over the head of the lolly. Secure them with a small rubber band, and then tie the ribbon around the “neck” of the ghost. Fluff the under layers of the coffee filters and use the sharpie to draw the ghost’s face (two eyes and an open “O” for the mouth). Once your family of ghosts are complete, stack them in a jar of candy corn for adorable presentation! n the fall, many employers offer an open enrollment period – a window of time to select your benefits package for the coming year. It’s easy to overlook this opportunity and maintain the status quo, but this could be a costly mistake given the significant role benefits play in your financial life. Have you experienced a major life change recently? If you’re on the verge of having a child, recently had a child graduate from college and enter the workforce, or the job status of you or your spouse has changed, reconsider your health insurance options to accommodate your current situation. MOVIE REVIEWS Malignant
Shang-Chi is a story about the scars that family leaves behind. Bolstered by Simu Liu and Tony Leung’s performances, the title character and his father Wenwu are at the heart of the film and deliver some of the best scenes from the film. When the film focuses on these themes, it’s great, but it staggers when it doesn’t. Its comedy particularly is grating, with most coming from Awkwafina’s supporting character that we are unfortunately forced to hang out with most of the movie. Action-wise it is better than previous films. Despite the usual problems with superhero movies, there’s still enough good in this film to make the watch worthwhile. In theaters. Kate
A figure from a woman’s past comes back and begins a murder spree, which she finds herself tangled into. Malignant is James Wan’s unapologetic love letter to horror. Combining the tones of classic Giallo films with underground 90s horror, we have a psychological/ slasher/slight body horror feature, which masterfully balances scares, excitement and even humor (if sometimes unintentional). With such striking visuals and effective gore, as well as an incredibly committed performance by Annabelle Wallis, Wan transports you into a demented world, and it’s a ride that will not stop until the end. It’s very much not for everyone, especially if you’re not familiar with the more specific parts of horror this review is referencing. But if you can get along with it, it’s a blast. In theaters.
An ex-marine, living a free life of poker playing to cope with a haunted past, finds himself having to face it once the son of a man he knew asks for his help in a dangerous plan. A quiet, patient film, like many of Paul Schrader’s previous films, The Card Counter is about a lonely man, content with his current existence, if still clearly hiding his pain. It’s the lead performance by Oscar Isaac that sells this movie. He subtly shows a range from pained to scary as he portrays William Tell. His character is so interesting that he actually overshadows the other characters, despite the best efforts of the other actors. It’s a very uncomfortable film with disturbing imagery and dark subjects, but if you can be able to stomach it, you will be rewarded. In theaters. Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings After ten years apart, a young man must fight against his father to save the world. A surprising work from Marvel,

posts, without any thought put into it. The actors try their best, but there’s only so much one can do with paper-thin characters like these. The neon drenched sights have become tiresome in this genre by now, offering nothing more than “Look at how cool this place is!”, instead of mood or tension. A potentially great film that can’t get past itself in its desire to be a John Wick clone. On Netflix.
