continued need to address COVID-19, the center has proactively implemented health and safety practices for the Fall Concert Series. The operations plan for the series is based on CDC guidelines and has been reviewed and approved by the City of Scottsdale, Scottsdale Police Department, and Scottsdale Fire Department. Scottsdale Quarter’s already rigorous disinfectant and cleaning practices will continue, and the following additional measures will be implemented for the concert series: • Designated seating areas in varying sizes will be clearly marked on the grass and concrete and spaced a minimum of 6 feet apart. Guests are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs and blankets to place within available designated seating areas. Sitting or standing will not be permitted outside of designated areas within the event perimeter during the concert. • Masks are required unless actively eating or drinking unless otherwise exempted by local ordinance. Disposable masks will be provided free of charge for those who need one. • Hand sanitizing stations will be available inside the event and at both public restroom entrances. • Floor decals will be placed in areas where lines may form, including outside of the public restrooms. Additionally, the shopping center asks all guests to conduct themselves in a safe and respectful way in accordance with the updated Code of Conduct as well as all laws and local ordinances. This year’s festival will be virtual, giving moviegoers the opportunity to travel the world and enjoy cinema from the comfort and safety of their own homes. “Going virtual for our 2020 festival was not our original plan to celebrate our 20th anniversary, but the safety of our guests and the uncertainty of our world has made this an easy choice,” says Executive Director Amy Ettinger.
“We’ve taken this opportunity to create a uniquely personalized film festival that not only lets you choose the films but now lets you choose when you want to watch them.” Using innovative technologies, the virtual festival allows participants to easily build a customized schedule and offers them the opportunity to see every film on the roster. This year’s line-up will continue the quality schedule of films and programming festivalgoers have come to expect from the Festival. The virtual film festival will showcase 20 to 25 films from a variety of countries, originating from both first-time and seasoned filmmakers. The Festival encourages all attendees to bring their critical thinking skills and appreciation for the arts so they can immerse themselves into the world of cinema. With a selection of comedies, dramas, documentaries, thrillers and more, audiences will be sure to find their niche watching one, several, or all of the films in the festival schedule, according to the Festival. he holiday season is fast approaching, which makes this a great time of year to start giving your kids some practical life skills by helping you in the kitchen. Getting your kids involved in the holiday food preparation is a great way to bond and pass on your traditions for celebrating. BENEFITS OF COOKING WITH CHILDREN One of the biggest benefits to having your kids help you in the kitchen is that you are teaching them about food and nutrition. Learning about food helps you learn how to eat right, handle food safely, and be healthier. In fact, studies show that people who regularly eat meals prepared at home are more likely to be healthier – and happier. When you eat less sugar and avoid processed foods, you typically have more energy, a healthier immune system, and overall better mental health as a result. Research shows that people who eat homecooked meals at least five or more days a week tend to live longer lives, too. Cooking with your kids is also a great way to help them grow and develop. From improving vocabulary, math, and fine motor skills, to teaching your kids critical life skills so they will be able to
take care of themselves as adults, cooking is an important way to help kids to become healthier and more independent. There are many ways for kids to help you in the kitchen. You can encourage your child’s interest in cooking by giving them different age-appropriate activities. Whether they stir batter, measure a cup of ingredients, knead dough, roll out cookies, or crack eggs, they are developing skills that will help them learn how to cook as they grow. Here are a few ideas to get your kids helping in the kitchen, no matter what age they are: • Let kids punch and knead dough for yeast breads • Have kids cream butter and sugar by squishing it with their hands • Allow kids to measure ingredients and pour them into the recipe with your guidance • Let your kids draw designs in extra flour (put down parchment or wax paper first) • Add food coloring to different recipes to help kids learn about colors and mixing • Let your kids decorate cookies and
cupcakes with frosting, sprinkles, candy, or other treats • Show your kids how to crimp the edges of a pie and let them do it for you • Put ingredients into a re-sealable bag and let your kid mix it with their hands • Ask kids to help you figure out how to double or half a recipe before measuring • Find no-bake recipes and help your kids walk through making the food from beginning to end The level of help in the kitchen should be based on your child’s age and ability. Younger kids have fun watching and playing, while older children want to be more hands on and participate in making the final product. You know your child best, so think about what they are ready for when you get ready cook. Family Scottsdale Mom Invents a New Product to Help Make Grocery Shopping Safer
D
ating back to as early as 2007, numerous research studies and countless news sources have covered the story of filthy shopping carts and their potential for transferring dangerous microbes and diseases to shoppers. In fact, some of those studies suggested that a shopping cart carries more germs than a public toilet seat. Until now, shoppers have dealt with these filthy carts by wiping them down with disinfecting wipes or attempting to outsmart germs by pulling the shopping cart by the tail or side rails—a fruitless endeavor given the research. But thanks to an ingenious and simple idea by a Scottsdale mom, all of that is about to change. CartSafe was created by Andi Barness-Rubin, a working mother of three boys who was frustrated with the thought of going to the grocery store and trying to keep germs off of herself and her food. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, she would always wipe the handle of the shopping cart with a storeprovided sanitizing wipe (when they were even available), but once the novel coronavirus began to spread, she starting thinking about all of the germs that were not only on the handle, but also all over the inside and outside of the cart. Frustrated by having to wipe down her entire cart, she came up with an idea that she knew would simplify her ability to keep herself and her family safe. With this idea in mind, Barness-Rubin worked at lightning speed to create myhyperlocalnews.com
and produce CartSafe, the first-ever disposable shopping cart liner. “When COVID-19 hit all I could think about was not being exposed to germs and bacteria and I could not believe there wasn’t something that could protect us from dirty shopping carts,” Barness-Rubin says. “Thankfully, my husband is in manufacturing so we were able to work together to launch in record time. We were able to secure the patent and bring the product to market in under three months. Anyone in business knows what a feat that is.” “CartSafe definitely gives me and my customers peace of mind when we put food or even pretty pillows in our shopping cart, especially since it’s convenient. Also, you get ten liners per bag, which makes each one less than you’d spend on a cup of coffee,” she adds. CartSafe is recyclable, made from durable LDPE (low-density polyethylene, a #4 plastic). LDPE plastics are recognized by the FDA as a safe barrier from microbes. The CartSafe liner can be disposed of by simply placing it in the recycle collection bins that most large grocery stores display at the entrance to their stores. hether you’re returning to the office and you need a place for your furry family member to go to for help with separation anxiety, or you’re working from home and you need a little space from your active pup, Dogtopia of Paradise Valley Village has you covered. Family-owned and operated, the local iteration of the popular national brand is relatively new to the neighborhood, having just opened over the summer. “We moved to Arizona a couple of years ago and we love dogs, so we wanted to open a dog daycare, boarding facility and spa,” explains Steve Weberman, who along with his wife Elaine, owns Dogtopia of Paradise Valley Village. “Dogtopia was the perfect fit for what we wanted to do. Obviously, opening in the middle of the pandemic was hard, but we have a very loyal customer base and some wonderful dogs we see daily.” Dogtopia of Paradise Valley boasts 5,200 square feet of indoor space with three large playrooms. When it comes to their pup-tacular daycare, Curry says that it’s all about teaching the dogs social cues, having a blast at playtime, and building their confidence.
“We have three different rooms for different temperaments and sizes,” Curry says. “We have canine coaches in each of the rooms who help with education, play a lot of games, and help dogs to learn social cues.” The dogs even have a set naptime, where pet parents can bring their pet’s beds and blankets from home to enjoy the ultimate comfort. Worried about them? There is webcam access for parents to check in and see how their furry family members are doing.
Curry adds that Dogtopia does all it can to make doggie daycare as affordable and convenient for families as possible. They offer a variety of different payment options, including full and half days, a punch card system, and a monthly membership. When it comes to convenience, you can bring Fido’s favorite food and treats, or they have two different “house blends” (grain-based and grain-free). So how do they know if your pup is a good fit for daycare or boarding? Steve shares that there is a meet and greet process for each new potential pup client. This includes testing their temperament around other dogs and humans with one of the canine coaches. All dogs who go to Dogtopia, after age seven months, need to be spayed or neutered, and those older than three months must have their Parvo/ Distemper, Bordatella and Rabies vaccinations. Hospice of the Valley traditionally holds an annual community event right before Thanksgiving — a special time of coming together to remember our loved ones who have passed, but still live in our hearts. Instead of a gathering of nearly 2,000 at Steele Indian School Park, families can tune into AZTV Channel 7 and watch the program from the comfort and safety of home.

Real Estate Turn Dimes Into Dollars: Top Seven Things to do Before You Sell By Joseph Callaway 1. CLEAN UP THE FRONT YARD You must get buyers out of their car. Get in your car and park at your curb. What do you see? Rake the rock, trim the trees and shrubs. Replace that broken mailbox. These are inexpensive ways to add value and curb appeal. 2. PAINT THE FRONT DOOR Use a high-gloss finish. This is your first impression and promise of good things to come. If you get a buyer leaning the right way, they may forgive things. Start them off on the wrong foot and there is no flaw that they will miss. 3. REPLACE THE CARPET As that front door opens, the first thing you see is the flooring. It is right there under your first step inside and then it is everywhere. Tired carpet costs you money. New carpet smells fresh. You may want to consider wood or tile replacements but use restraint. The moment you lay that tile, you lose someone who prefers another finish. Plus, flooring can be expensive. Remember, we are turning dimes into dollars, not the other way around.
4. PAINT THE INTERIOR WALLS, TRIM, AND WOODWORK Like carpet, paint is inexpensive and it covers many flaws. Be sure to keep the colors neutral. When it comes to woodwork, ten cents worth of paint can save a dollar’s worth of new cabinets. Like tile, the wrong cabinet replacement can lose as many buyers as it gains. 5. REPLACE LAMINATE COUNTER TOPS With some homes this should be number one. Old, out of style, horizontal surfaces can seem daunting to the buyer. Go with granite, corian or quartz. Tile squares may be a step up from laminate but they are much closer to replacement than enhancement. 6. MAKE THE BACK YARD INVITING We all imagine ourselves spending time outside. Set a table for dining, consider the lighting. If you’re selling in the summer, you might install misters. In the winter, buy an outdoor heater like your favorite restaurant has. 7. ADDRESS THE EYESORES It is face-the-music time. If you are going to turn dimes into dollars, you must be honest with yourself. Walk your home with a buyer’s eyes. Would you buy this home? Eyesores can be anything from an old ap-
pliance to a tired light fixture from the seventies. Be brave, be bold, but remember to be thrifty. There is a story about one of the old masters whose paintings were already in museums during his lifetime. The story goes that the night watchman would find the elderly artist sneaking in at midnight to touch up his work. You must find a stopping place. reast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States with more than 250,000 diagnosed with an invasive form each year. The causes of breast cancer are complex and multifactorial, including genetic, hormone related, and environmental, but learning about potential risks and how to detect it early can prepare you to see warning signs when it is most treatable and curable. KNOW THE RISK FACTORS While most breast cancer cases can’t be linked to a specific cause, there are a few known risk factors to be aware of. • Age: As you get older, your risk of breast cancer increases. Most cases are found in women over the age of 50. However, we are seeing breast cancer more and more in younger women. • Personal History: If you have had breast cancer in the past, your chances of developing cancer again are higher. • Family History: If a direct relative like a mother, sister or daughter has developed breast cancer, or other type of cancer, this increases your risk. • Genetic Factors: The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are genetic mutations that greatly increase the chance of developing breast cancer. There are other genes as well that increase your risk, so if you have a family history of breast cancer, genetic testing may be indicated. EARLY DETECTION IS KEY As with any cancer, early detection greatly increases the chance of beating cancer. There are a few different methods that, when done in combination, are the best tools to see early stages of cancer. Regularly examining your breast is a great place to start. While examining, look for any swelling, soreness, lumps or changes in the shape or size. Anything abnormal should be brought to your doctor’s
attention for further examination. The most important findings are hard, immobile masses, and indentations of the skin. Also examine yourself standing, laying, and leaning over forward, as skin retraction can be more prominent in one position vs. another. Mammograms are one of the most important screening methods for women over the age of 40 as it can detect signs of cancer up to two years before a tumor can be felt. The X-ray can see tiny white dots, or micro-calcifications, which can be a sign of breast cancer. Another technique that works well for younger women with more dense breasts or implants employs quantitative transmission ultrasound, also known as a QT Ultrasound. It provides a much clearer view and provides images more like an MRI. Women at high risk should consider yearly mammograms along with ultrasounds starting at 30. TECHNIQUES ARE IMPROVING If you do develop breast cancer, take heart that treatment technologies and techniques have greatly advanced over the years. Even options for breast reconstruction have advanced like using your own tissue rather than a traditional implant which can improve the feel and shape of the breast. Your plastic surgeon can work closely with you to determine the best option for you. Often, an oncoplastic reconstruction can improve the appearance of the breast. Breast Cancer Awareness month is a great time to educate yourself and make breast health a priority. Consider creating standing annual appointments for the appropriate screening procedures and monthly reminders for self-examination; your body will thank you. Working with Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels this past month on their annual gala made me think about how we can give to charities when we do estate plans, benefitting the charity and giving us tax advantages. 1. GIFTS FROM A 401(K) OR TRADITIONAL IRA Your contributions to your 401(k) or IRA are pretax money. You or your individual beneficiary will pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. A charity, on the other hand, will not pay taxes if they are the beneficiary. If you are including a charity in your
