City News The Annual Tour de Scottsdale Switches Gears, Registration Now Open THE ANNUAL TOUR DE SCOTTSDALE BENEFITTING THE MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANCY WILL SWITCH GEARS THIS YEAR TO NAVIGATE THE EVOLVING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. After careful consideration for public health and safety, DC Ranch made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person event on Market Street. A virtual event, held October 12-18, will allow hundreds of road warriors to keep the cycling spirit alive, stay active and healthy, while still supporting the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. Riders will have several registration options to complete ride miles on their own. Participants can

ride the official Tour de Scottsdale courses, log miles around their city, or even in their home on a trainer. In addition to the traditional 30 and 70-mile rides, the virtual event will introduce a new 15-mile course and 5-mile fit family ride. The event beneficiary is the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization that protects and promotes the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in North Scottsdale. With over 30,500 acres and 200 miles of trails, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the largest urban preserve in North America and the fourth largest urban preserve in the world. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is dedicated to preserving the Sonoran Desert

and mountains. The nonprofit protects this living treasure and offers events and activities in the Preserve so that everyone can enjoy a family-friendly, natural experience, according to the Conservancy. Now in its 17th year, the Tour de Scottsdale donates 100 percent of sponsorship proceeds and a portion of registration fees to the Conservancy and has raised over $600,000 to date. Those who register and complete any of the distances will receive a commemorative, distance-unique medal, a virtual goodie bag and perks—along with all the bragging rights. Registration is now open. Visit TourdeScottsdale.net for details.

Scottsdale FD Invites Community to Participate in Virtual 9/11 Commemorative Event ANNUALLY, THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT (SFD) COORDINATES A SPECIAL EVENT TO COMMEMORATE THE ATTACKS OF 9/11.

an in-person event, SFD is celebrating the National Day of Service with an idea sparked by the organization 911Day.org and using social media to tap into the human spirit.

Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “With this campaign, we hope that everyone takes even just a moment to share in that mission and remember our brothers and sisters who gave their lives that day.”

On the fifth and tenth anniversaries, a pop-up museum showcased larger-than-life displays in the Scottsdale Center of the Performing Arts. On the other years, a small ceremony in the police and fire headquarters lobby featured the reading of the names of the public safety members who died that day.

In 2012, 911Day.org launched the #IWill campaign to encourage everyone to do something good in their community. This could being there for someone who needs it, making a charitable donation, or packing meals for local food banks.

Participating is easy. Individuals or groups simply take a photo holding a piece of paper with a personal pledge to honor those lost on 9/11 by doing something good. Photos can be posted on their individual social media accounts using the hashtags #IWill and #WeCare (tagging @ScottsdaleFire). The photos can also be emailed to Fire@ScottsdaleAZ.gov. Photos of completing the pledge are encouraged, too. The department will begin sharing the photos during the week of 9/11 starting Monday, September 7.

This year, because of COVID-19 restrictions, the fire department knew it had to be creative to continue to honor the day and those lives lost. Instead of

City Ci ty NNeews Mask Up In Style ON A SUNNY DAY EARLY IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, ALISON HANDEL AND HER TEENAGE DAUGHTERS WATCHED CANCER PATIENTS ENTER A CHEMOTHERAPY INFUSION CENTER. They entered alone due to policies necessary to try to keep the patients and their loved ones safe and, seeing this, the Handels said to each other, “We need to do something.” And so, the brainstorming that led to House of Luxury Masks began. Through Alison’s position as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Arizona Chapter Board of Trustees, the Handels had long been supporters of LLS’ mission to invest in lifesaving new treatments and provide support to patients and their families. A long-time resident of DC Ranch, Alison has personally raised thousands of dollars over a decade of involvement with LLS and daughters Ava (14) and Chloe (12) are often at her side, helping in whatever way that they can. In the summer of 2020, that help has emerged through an innovative initiative the Handels have named House of Luxury Masks — a project

born from the Handels’ interest in fundraising, fashion and a new sustainability concept known as “upcycling.” “We were already committed to raising funds for LLS just as wearing masks was becoming a necessity — and we thought, ‘Why not mask up in style?’” The concept was to create masks from discarded dust covers for shoes and clothing, boxes, gift wrap ribbons, and any material that would reflect luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana. They researched the best pattern for the masks themselves, produced a few initial prototypes and then worked on a business plan to gather donations for LLS in return for masks that reflected the styles of fashion’s top brands. By using materials that would have eventually found their way to a landfill, they were also able to employ the concept of upcycling, or taking something that would be thrown out and elevating it into a practical yet stylish new use. Ava, a freshman at Notre Dame Preparatory, created a website to display the different masks available. Chloe, a seventh grader at St. John XXIII, devised the packaging concepts and provided creative direction, while the girls’ cousin, Liv, a junior at Indiana University studying marketing and business management, devised a marketing and social media strategy. And Alison got to work sourcing from friends and neighbors the materials needed to produce the masks. Not long after launching the website in late June and starting the marketing and social media campaign, they received a $1,000 donation for a personalized mask and haven’t slowed down since, with orders coming in from across the United States and Canada. In mid-August, they passed the $8,000 mark for funds raised, well on their way to reaching

myhyperlocalnews.com

their initial $10,000 goal by November. They’ve also added dog bandanas and scrunchies to their product mix based on requests from donors. “The whole experience has been remarkable, and the support of the community has truly been a blessing,” Alison says. They’ve begun receiving donations of materials from complete strangers who have heard about their efforts and not only want to donate money to receive a mask, but also make sure House of Luxury Masks can continue to fill more orders. Aside from raising thousands of dollars to help cancer patients, experiencing the creation of a new “business,” and logging hundreds of service hours, there has also been an unanticipated additional benefit for Ava and Chloe. “We learned how to use the steam setting on our iron,” Ava says with a wide smile. City Ci ty NNeews Scottsdale Police Publish Policies Online THE SCOTTSDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT (PD) RECENTLY CREATED A NEW TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY WEBPAGE THAT PROVIDES OPEN ACCESS TO ITS POLICY MANUAL.

The new page can be accessed at scottsdaleaz.gov/ police/transparency-and-accountability.

These are the most current policies, which are continuously reviewed and updated through an extensive revision process, according to the department. While most policies are available online, not every policy is available through the website to preserve tactical, officer safety, and other security concerns. Under the Arizona Public Records laws, such release or withholding must be evaluated pursuant to the Carlson balancing test. If a community member would like a policy listed in the Table of Contents that is not available on the website, one can make a public records request to see if a redacted version can be released. “The Scottsdale Police Department participates in numerous department wide programs to foster public accountability and provide transparency,” according

to Scottsdale PD. “This includes Uniformed Crime Reporting, International Accreditation, data analytics, policy management, and the Strategic Plan for the Scottsdale Police Department.” Every year, Scottsdale PD voluntarily submits to a rigorous review of departmental policies and procedures that address compliance with over 460 standards, according to Scottsdale PD. A departmentwide assessment, including interviews with city leadership and the community, is completed every four years by external assessment teams. The accreditation process ensures accountability within the department in meeting or exceeding the gold standard expectations of policing, cites Scottsdale PD. For more information about police accreditation, call 480-312-1971.

Scottsdale Entrepreneurs Beat Odds During Pandemic CREATING A NEW COMPANY IS A RISKY BUSINESS. THE ODDS OF SUCCESS ARE TOUGHEST IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS. Two Scottsdale entrepreneurs are beating those odds and launched their pharmaceutical-grade skincare product line in March. That’s right. Sharon Skaar and Erin Dodd co-founded TreCeuticals in fall of 2019 and officially launched their products in March 2020 when businesses nationwide were shuttering their doors in the height of the pandemic. “We knew we had a unique product line,” says Skaar, whose previous career as a senior vice president in banking prepared her well for entrepreneurship. With Dodd’s background in luxury brand sales and executive coaching, the two have combined expertise at their fingertips that would make any start-up owner envious. And, their gamble already is paying off. National reports show a 147 percent year-over-year increase in the purchase of skincare product since 2019, and TreCeuticals is garnering its share. Their first official warehouse was Skaar’s garage. Today their products are being shipped nationwide from an independent distribution center in Phoenix.

TreCeuticals also sets high standards for competitors to match: • All products are 100 percent sourced in the United States • Formulation, manufacturing and packaging are also all U.S. based • All products are cruelty-free, vegan and Leaping Bunny Certified • Products are gender-neutral and suitable for all ages • Products contain the most effective levels of retinol, hydroxyl acids, and antioxidants without a prescription • TreCeuticals delivers its medicalgrade skincare line directly to consumers’ doors • All natural ingredients including high-grade, full spectrum CBD oil (with non-detectable levels of TCH) that “provides a calming and soothing effect to the skin” • TreCeuticals is patent pending To create their skincare line, Dodd and Skaar turned to scientific research and medical consultants. They saw a need for a simple-to-use but effective skincare line that did not require a visit to a doctor’s office or med spa. “Even though more doctors are carrying our products, the majority of our customers are happy having TreCeuticals delivered to their homes,” Skaar says.

6 • September 2020 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

They worked with Dr. Paul Holden, a Scottsdale-based, board-certified facial plastic surgeon, to develop a basic 3-minute skin care regimen featuring a daily cleanser, facial pads and moisturizer. In addition, there is a once-a-week peel and a daily mister to improve and refresh your skin. Dr. Holden touts the skincare line is beneficial in fighting “maskne” – acne and breakouts caused by the prolonged wearing of masks. Holden says using the product called Mist Me Baby, the daily misting spray, can help unclog pores of dirt and bacteria on the face that can lead to blemishes and acne. While still a relatively new company, positive reviews have been accumulating from pleased customers all over the country. “It is a game changer. My skin is so much smoother and clearer,” says Shelly Fernandez who works in aesthetic and medical sales and claims to have tried dozens of lines. “TreCeuticals is a clean product with natural ingredients. It smells and feels amazing, and the packaging is beautiful.” Another aspect of the company of which Dodd and Skaar are most proud is their focus on community and their

Brand Advocate program which Dodd heads up. In the fall, TreCeuticals will be partnering with local family charities. Their Brand Advocate program is also meant to help empower women (and men) as a way to earn extra income by simply “sharing” the product with others. “We tell our brand advocates we’re in the business of sharing, not selling,” says Dodd. “If you love how your skin looks and feels with TreCeuticals, why not share that passion with someone you care about? We all deserve to feel our very best.” myhyperlocalnews.com

City News Scottsdale Aviation Business Center Earns LEED Gold THE U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL HAS RECOGNIZED THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE’S AVIATION BUSINESS CENTER, 15000 N. AIRPORT DRIVE, WITH THE LEED (LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN) GOLD CERTIFICATION. The award recognizes the project for its sustainable, green building qualities. The Aviation Business Center is a modern two-story 23,250 square foot steel building featuring glass facades, wood designer elements and an open design. It serves as the hub for the aviation administration offices, U.S. Customs and Border Protection office, leased office space, public meeting rooms, outdoor plaza, on-site restaurant and a veteran’s memorial. During the design, staff and the architects worked hard to achieve LEED Gold standards while maintaining the vision, budget and schedule for the project. The building was designed to conserve resources and reduce energy consumption. “We are proud of achieving goldlevel certification,” says Aviation Director Gary P. Mascaro. “The goal from the start was to build to a high level of sustainable standards without sacrificing on design.” The project employed many sustainable strategies, including:

• Roofing does not contribute to heat island effect • Low flow plumbing fixtures • No CFC based refrigerants • Building materials that were sourced locally were given preference • Building materials with a high recycled content were given preference • Materials and products with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) were used in the interior • Development of the site in a way that maximizes open space • Utilization of roofing that minimizes heat island effect • Onsite renewable energy (photovoltaic) • Responsible management of construction waste • Wood products were harvested sustainably • Bicycle racks Most new city buildings strive to be built to LEED Gold standards per Section 2 of Resolution No. 6644. The City of Scottsdale has 14 LEED certified buildings, including four Platinum and now five Gold buildings. The LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. There are four demanding levels of certification (from lowest to highest): Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Now May Be the Time for A Financial Reassessment By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor Affinity Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC

#3 DO YOU HAVE A SOLID PROTECTION STRATEGY IN PLACE? This is an opportune time to make sure that you and your family are adequately insured. Health insurance is a good place to start, particularly if your work situation has changed in recent months. The importance of adequate life insurance is more evident in times like these to protect the wellbeing of your family. Look at other protection options too, such as disability income insurance and long-term care coverage to meet specialized care needs, especially as you grow older.

W

e’re experiencing a period of upheaval in the world today, which has also had an impact on the economy and markets. Given the spike in volatility and uncertainty we’re seeing in the broader economy, it may be time to step back and carefully review your financial life. Take some time to assess where you stand and whether it may be appropriate to make any adjustments in your strategy. Here are four key questions to ask about your current financial circumstances.

#4 IS YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN STILL ON TRACK?

#1 DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH CASH TO MEET SHORT-TERM NEEDS? A healthy cash reserve is important in times like these. A general rule of thumb is to have enough cash on hand (held in readily accessible accounts) to meet three to six months’ worth of expenses. But given today’s economic uncertainties, it may make sense to set aside up to nine months’ worth of cash. #2 ARE YOU COMFORTABLE WITH THE LEVEL OF RISK IN YOUR PORTFOLIO?

Finally, take a careful look at your overall financial plan. Are you still on track to achieve the key goals you initially established? Does your plan require adjustments based on circumstances that have changed? Given all of the events of recent months, this is the right time to review your plan to make sure you are still heading in the right direction. Be sure to connect with your financial advisor to explore these questions in more detail and keep your financial life in order. Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFATM, CFS®,

Health Surviving Coronavirus Anxiety with CBD Sponsored Content by Cannafyl

W

hy would I want to be using CBD at a time like this; a worldwide coronavirus outbreak? There are numerous reasons, including the effects that thinking about this genuinely has on you. Can we battle coronavirus anxiety with CBD? Social distancing is now being applied, but many are feeling the damaging effects on their mental health of not staying connected with those they care about. It’s no joke that this pandemic has halted our lives and changed everything we knew about our daily routines and habits. CBD is usually used for its overall general wellness, or to target specific symptoms such as pain, anxiety, insomnia, and more. When it comes to helping ease the anxiety of the the novel coronavirus, knowing how CBD interacts with our bodies may help alleviate and prevent symptoms you may be experiencing. In order to understand how CBD can be used as a preventative measure, we first need to understand how CBD interacts with the naturally occurring Endocannabinoid System (ECS) within our bodies. When we are in homeostasis, or balance, the body has a perfect balance between polar opposites. The more robust your homeostasis is, the healthier you are. This means that the more active and balanced your physiological systems are, you are more likely to maintain a healthy body. When one part of our physiological systems gets thrown off, they all become unbalanced.

What do we normally do when we experience sickness or a symptom of that sort? We go see our doctor, and they usually prescribe us pharmaceuticals to ease the symptoms. Typical prescriptions are formulated to only deal with one shift in homeostasis, not all of them. So what happens when you start taking this new drug, and another shift occurs? You feel pain in your hip now when you walk on a nerve, or you are irritable and moodier than usual. Did this drug cause another shift from its side effects? Pharmaceuticals cover symptoms, but CBD covers systems by balancing out the individual symptoms. When you ingest CBD, it goes directly to the nucleus of your cells where proteins are manufactured and modulates the transcription of over 1,100 genes for signaling molecules that naturally balance out the body. These signaling molecules differ for each bodily system: neurotransmitters for the nervous system, hormones for the endocrine system, and cytokines for the immune system. In short, CBD helps alter the signaling molecules that our body needs by reducing inflammation in the central nervous system and immune system and restoring optimal homeostasis. Our immune system is made up of over 350 different signaling molecules, so if one shifts, they all shift. CBD comes in and creates a cascade of homeostasis within these shifts. The ECS was discovered in 1992 in Israel as the largest network of cells with receptors for CBD in our entire

physiology. Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids such as Anandamide, known as the bliss molecule, and 2AG, commonly found in mother’s milk to induce calmness while breastfeeding. Cannabinoids have also been discovered within the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, bone marrow, intestines, spleen, bladder, and the lymph systems; proving cannabinoids as essential for proper human health. Leaving inflammation untreated within the body can result in major ailments that require far more time and energy than if we prevented them in the first place. In regards to our immune systems, inadequate treatment may result in autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, lupus, thyroid issues, fibromyalgia, MS, skin disorders, psoriasis, eczema, and chronic infections. The brain may be affected resulting in ‘brain fog,’ migraines, epilepsy, anxiety, PTSD, ADD, ADHD, autism, and insomnia. Knowing this puts the use and benefits of CBD into proper perspective as to how we can be helping ourselves at this time. Coronavirus anxiety can be fought with CBD, and does not have to overpower your daily life. CBD may provide tremendous healing and relief through the ECS that brings balance to the central nervous system and immune system. Of course, if you or a loved one is showing symptoms of the novel coronavirus, please call your healthcare provider and follow all guidelines posted by the CDC.

Flu in a World of COVID-19: Why This Year’s Flu Shot is Critical By Dr. Tara Ostrom

I

t’s 100+ degrees out, so you may not be thinking about flu season. However, there are sporadic cases of flu here in Arizona, according to community health data from Maricopa County, and already doctors are recommending people make a plan to get their annual flu shot when it becomes locally available. In addition, this year’s COVID-19 pandemic has shaken our nation and, of the many lessons we’ve learned as a result of this public health crisis, one of the most impactful is the importance of immunizations and vaccinations. For example, in part due to COVID-19, 30 percent of Americans said they are now more likely to get a flu vaccine this year. Unfortunately, many adults still are under the mistaken impression that vaccinations are not needed for themselves or their children or are concerned about side effects. The reality is quite the opposite: in the U.S., vaccines have greatly reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases that once routinely killed or harmed infants, children and adults. This year, seasonal flu vaccination is especially important as the stress on hospitals will be greatest if the COVID-19 and influenza epidemics overlap and peak around the same time. While it isn’t possible to predict the future, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes it’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that cause COVID-19 will both be spreading in the fall and winter. So while vaccination is important, given pandemic concerns, how you go about getting your flu shot may look a little different. Additionally, some common places where people get their flu shots, such as workplaces, may not offer them this year due to social distancing challenges.

This year’s health crisis has made it a critical year for ensuring that you receive your annual flu vaccination. The cost of the flu vaccine is often covered by your health plan, whether you buy health insurance on your own, receive health benefits from your employer, or through a Medicare or state Medicaid program. Check with your health insurer and then schedule an appointment by calling your physician or going to a nearby urgent care clinic. Make sure you’re making your health a priority by getting your flu shot this year. Dr. Tara Ostrom is the associate medical director with OptumCare Primary Care.

unday, September 13 is National Grandparents Day, a special time to recognize the grandparents in our lives. With the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations may look different this year. One group who don’t have the option to social distance from their grandchildren are grandparents raising them. More than 60,000 grandparents in Arizona are responsible for their grandchildren. Below are some resources for grandfamilies. ARIZONA FAMILY RESOURCES Available at azfamilyresources.org, this website—supported by AASK (Aid to Adoption of Special Kids)— provides information on the foster care system, which many grandparents raising grandchildren have to navigate. AASK’s website, aask-az.org, also offers kinship licensing, case management and advocacy. ARIZONA GRANDPARENT AMBASSADORS (AZGA) With more info available at azga.org, the AZGA is a “volunteer support network of grandparents who are raising grandchildren.” The group hosts “workshops, monthly steering committee meetings and quarterly newsletter for members.” GRANDFAMILIES.ORG This easy-to-navigate website serves as a “national legal resource in support of grandfamilies within and outside the child welfare system.” Users can easily navigate a variety of pertinent topics and access an Arizona-specific fact sheet that lists many local organizations that help kinship caregivers. GrandFamiles.org was a resource for information in this article. DUET: PARTNERS IN HEALTH & AGING Duet is a local nonprofit that offers support throughout Maricopa County for grandparents raising grandchildren through free-of-charge support groups, legal guidance and assistance, funds for extracurricular activities, information and guided assistance, educational workshops and grandfamily outings. Learn more at duetaz.org/grandparentsraising-grandchildren.

ARIZONA CAREGIVER COALITION “Our sole purpose is to support caregivers and their families. We offer support and help finding access to information, assistance, answers, new ideas and helpful options for you and your loved one.” Through the coalition, grandparents may be eligible for respite reimbursement. Learn more at AZCaregiver.org. DEPARTMENT OF CHILD SAFETY (DCS) DCS offers many resources to kinship caregivers, including a potential stipend and other support services. Visit dcs. az.gov/fosteradoption/kinship-fostercaregivers for more information. BENEVILLA Through the Grandfamily/Kinship Caregiver Program, Benevilla assists Northwest Valley families with “information and referral, support groups, family fun events, educational workshops, newsletters, holiday programs, and individual counseling.” Find out more at benevilla.org/familyresource-center. KINSHIP AND ADOPTION, RESOURCE AND EDUCATION (KARE) Serving Phoenix and Tucson, KARE offers “Legal support, support groups in English and Spanish, kinship navigation services, recreational activities for families and youth, information, referral and connection services to community resources.” Services vary upon location; arizonakinship.org. AARP FOUNDATION’S BENEFITS QUICKLINK According to GrandFamilies.org, “QuickLINK, powered by BenefitsCheckUp of the National Council on Aging, offers a free and private way to complete a questionnaire to find out if relatives and/or the children they are raising qualify for certain programs that pay for food, increase income and cover home and healthcare costs.” Grandparents can simply fill out the questionnaire and the website generates a list of programs and contact info. Charity Superhero September: Hope is Stronger Than Fear By Michelle Talsma Everson

We’re Making a SPLASH in North Scottsdale!

A

n award-winning law veteran, Sean Reavie is the founder and president of the board of directors of Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope. This month, and all year-round, Reavie and his team of real life superheroes raise funds to empower children suffering acute physical and sexual abuse by adopt advocacy and child crisis centers in Arizona to ensure the children visiting have all their needs addressed. “Put on the Cape (POTC) uses superhero mythology to empower children victimized by physical or sexual abuse or who may be witness to heinous crimes,” Reavie explains. “Superheroes overcome adversity and tragedy and use their new found strength to serve others… POTC raises awareness for family advocacy centers and the work done within those walls. The centers have no budget for toys, clothing, food, and basic necessities like diapers, underpants, toothbrushes, shampoo and other basic needs people sometimes take for granted. We organize events around the country asking for donations of superhero action figures, Barbie dolls, superhero themed t-shirts, and those basic necessities. Our mission is to provide those items to the centers, so they can take the time they normally spend fundraising and focus 100 percent on the child.” Superhero September started in 2015 as a one-time promotion that grew each year—so much so, it was the catalyst for creating POTC. “I decided that Superhero September limited me to holding events in just September,” Reavie shares. “I incorporated all events, intellectual properties, and trademarks into Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope.” Like many nonprofits, POTC is feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their fundraising efforts. “It [the pandemic] has devastated our ability to do what we’ve done for the last five years. Our signature events were

designed to go right to the public. We had seven events planned for March and April and had to cancel them all,” Reavie says. “Our sponsors are hurting and unable to donate as they have in the past. I began to realize I needed to change our approach to fundraising and our advocacy.” To help make up the difference, the POTC team is turning to localized virtual events. To find these events, community members can go to putonthecape.org and click the link for upcoming events or find Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope on Facebook and look under the event section. All events are virtual and support seven child advocacy centers and 10 cities across the Valley. In addition to the virtual events, community members can get involved by organizing a donation drive to support the center in their city, Reavie explains. “All centers have a wish list of items they need to give to children and their families. We can give them [community members] that list and they in turn can empower their business or school to participate. You can make a difference with donating one action figure or $10. I have seen first hand the change in a child when handed their favorite superhero action figure. They become happy, animated, and child-like again. Someone stole their right to be a little kid. We aim to give it back to them.” To learn more, visit putonthecape.org or e-mail sean@putonthecape.org.

T he J is Here for Our Community Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

By Erika Farr

A

s soon as you walk into the Martin Pear JCC (The J), located on the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus (12701 N. Scottsdale Road), it is clear that serving their members and the greater Scottsdale community is at the heart of everything they do. From the smiling faces at the membership desk to the state-of-theart aquatics center, staffed with highly trained lifeguards and swim coaches, and

the enriching environment of Shemesh and Kochavim Camp, The J is and has always been equipped to serve the needs of the entire family. In spite of the uncertainty and challenges presented during COVID-19, this has not changed. In response to the increased restrictions and shutdowns, leadership at The J introduced a variety of policy changes to ensure that The J continues to be a safe place for members and the community.

12 • September 2020 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

“From the beginning, we took an attitude that it’s about what we can do, not about what we can’t,” says Jay Jacobs, CEO of the Ina Levine Jewish Community Campus and The Martin Pear JCC. “The goal was to create an environment people felt safe walking into.” To do this, Christine Hutchinson, the facilities director, with the assistance of a medical task force, created a re-opening plan and training program for staff to ensure all protocols and rules are adhered to.

As part of this plan, when you enter The J, you will find that ninety percent of the campus’ walkways move in one direction. This is to limit interactions and keep foot traffic flowing. In addition to the regular cleaning crew, The J also hired a full-time team to sanitize the campus’ doorknobs, railings, counters, sinks, bathrooms, and more. Temperature checks are mandatory for anyone wishing to enter, and signage reminds people with symptoms not to enter the facility. The myhyperlocalnews.com

of traditional day camps. With all the necessary changes, the staff at the Shemesh Camp was still able to create a fun and enriching experience for children in the Scottsdale community. Lindsay, one J member, says, “We are delighted we found The J and this amazing camp for our kids. The J exceeded our expectations, and we are so appreciative of all the communication we have always received. They are doing a fabulous job.”

J selected each safety protocol to create an environment in which members feel safe. According to members like Shari, it is working. “The staff couldn’t be better equipped to handle the ‘new normal’ of welcoming us and making sure we are safe during this particular time and all with smiling faces…I am happy to be back in this wonderful, safe environment,” Shari says. In addition to increasing member safety, these new protocols have allowed staff at The J to reconnect with members on a personal level. According to the CEO, despite increased restrictions, the team at The J found a way to see the positive in what could be viewed as a negative situation. “Things are far from how they used to be, but it’s not all bad,” Jacobs says. For example, taking visitors’ temperatures at the entrance “has reminded us how important it is to greet people when they walk into the building. We’ll definitely continue member greeting once the COVID-19 crisis is behind us.” Along with the new safety protocols, The J has introduced numerous virtual and outdoor fitness programming options to continue to bring value to members and the community. Before the closure, The J provided a variety of in-building fitness activities for members such as Pilates, Yoga, BurnFit, and Parkinson’s PWR!Moves™. To safely bring members quality fitness programs, The J introduced the J at Home virtual platform. Updated once a week, the J at Home virtual platform provides access to a variety of cultural, learning, and fitness programs like myhyperlocalnews.com

the Parkinson’s Warrior Express class. Perry, a J member with Parkinson’s, shares, “I did the Warrior Express class on J at Home. It was a great workout, and the instructors were very explicit with directions and made sure we were safe…thanks for thinking of us.” In addition to their virtual fitness programing, The J recently introduced an outdoor fitness area. This area allows members to continue to utilize cardio, free weight, and strength equipment while maintaining distance and practicing safety protocols. “In uncertain times like this, it is important to preserve a sense of normalcy whenever possible. For many of our members, retaining a health and fitness routine is important to maintaining their sense of normalcy. To accommodate these members, we created The J outdoor fitness facility and introduced outdoor fitness classes,” says Lauren Berczynski, fitness director at The J.

Now that some restrictions are lifting throughout Scottsdale and the state of Arizona, the leadership team at The J continues to look for creative ways to support their members and the Scottsdale community. This fall, The J introduced their latest youth program, Club J All Day. Club J All Day is designed for children ranging from kindergarten to 8th grade and intends to help parents fill the gap until students transition back to inperson learning. “It is an honor to provide Club J All Day as a solution for parents in this current climate of canceled events and delayed in-person school starts,” says Kim Subrin, COO at The J. She shares, “This program allows us to not only serve our community in providing high-quality child supervision and online learning support, but it also gives us the ability to hire educators and other individuals who were impacted by the pandemic.”

In addition to Club J All Day, this fall, The J will introduce the J-Force elite swim team. Coached by Brian Hoffer, this team is open to youth ages 14 and up who intend to grow stronger in and out of the water. Debbie Meeks, J aquatics director, says, “J Aquatics is happy to bring Brian Hoffer onboard our amazing coaching staff. Our program seeks to offer experienced, high-quality swim coaching to our community. With Coach Hoffer onboard, we now have three highlyqualified coaches running our J Swim Club program. The swimmers in our program have access to some of the most forward-thinking and talented coaches in the industry.” Although Club J All Day and J-Force are only a couple of examples of how The J is working to support the community in the months ahead, it is clear that The J is here for the Scottsdale community - yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Though they have had to pivot, as all other businesses and organizations have during this time, The J will remain a core provider of in-building, on campus, and virtual programs and services, and will ultimately continue to be a source of support for the people of Scottsdale. If you’d like more information, inquire at the membership desk, call 480-6344909, or visit the J online at vosjcc.org.

The sincere drive to serve members and an innovative approach to problem-solving demonstrated by the outdoor fitness area and is also witnessed by a strong summer program with Shemesh and Kochavim Camp. Before the pandemic, the campus saw some 3,000 to 3,500 people per day. Today it serves about 1,000 daily, including kids at the Shemesh Camp at The J. Unlike regular summers, there were no field trips this year. But, that doesn’t mean the summer was any less memorable. The limitations forced staff and counselors to get creative, come up with activities on the sprawling campus, and go “back to the basics” THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD • September 2020 • 13

A Family-Owned Local Restaurant Stays Innovating During the Pandemic

Then what was first dismissed as an exaggerated flu soon became the unimaginable; a pandemic that just about put every business to a screeching halt. “Not a single restaurant owner, or any business, for that matter was prepared,” says Banquil. “The most stressful thing for me and my wife was knowing we were responsible for the livelihood of our staff and their families.” Soon after the initial state-wide shut down, many local restaurants had no choice but to close their doors. Banquil was able to stay afloat but had to think of ways to keep guests ordering take-out while providing his staff with adequate income. He hosted a gift card drive where half the face value of the gift cards purchased went straight to an employee relief fund. The other half covered the cost of the food and labor to prepare it. Banquil then promoted take-out family meal deals, including special feasts to-go for Easter and Mother’s Day. Today, the dining room is open but mandated to only seat at 50 percent capacity. Take-out orders

are still a bulk of the business. For September, aside from a first-ever BOGO, where a customer guest can enjoy one entrée at the restaurant and take another one to-go at half-off, Banquil will also be launching Ghost Street Asian Taqueria, a pop-up restaurant concept selling Asian-inspired tacos specifically to take-out and delivery only. “We’re adjusting to what more and more families are wanting—delicious, flavorful, hearty meals to-go without compromising quality or value. Everything we’re creating we’d proudly serve our families,” he says. “I’m constantly thinking of how to keep guests happy.” Banquil, a Scottsdale resident, says he and his family are committed to supporting other locally-owned and operated business. He says it’s important for his kids to learn to support those who support you. “Today, I don’t take a single day in business for granted,” he says. “When a family comes in to dine or one of our regular guests orders a meal to-go, I know they’re a large part of our success and I’m grateful. Not a day goes by that I don’t look for ways to support another local business because it’s really just looking out for one of my neighbors.” To learn more, visit lingandlouies.com.

Food Salad and Go Hosts Fundraiser to Support Two Local Nonprofits

S

alad and Go is going above and beyond to support the local community by collecting donations for two local nonprofits, Waste Not and Homeward Bound. Through the end of the month, Salad and Go staff will collect donations through their drive-thrus and online orders, providing an easy way for their guests to make a difference. One hundred percent of the donations collected will be split evenly between the two organizations. This isn’t the first time Salad and Go has stepped up to help those in need. In response to COVID-19, they stepped up to meet the growing demand for

food donations and, since April, have donated more than 77,000 salads to nonprofits like Waste Not and Homeward Bound who are serving people in need. With the effects of COVID-19 still being felt via continued job loss, limited access to school resources, and a reduction in unemployment benefits, too many people have found themselves on tight budgets and unable to feed their families. Together, Salad and Go, Waste Not, and Homeward Bound are working hard to fill this gap. The funds raised through this campaign will provide meals and shelter to neighbors in need. “We are thrilled to partner with Homeward Bound and Waste Not. These organizations are working hard to end hunger and homelessness in our community— their work is necessary, compassionate, and truly inspiring. One hundred percent of the donations collected at Salad and Go will help expand their impact and directly support programs making a difference,” says Brandi Hale, head of People and Culture at Salad and Go. This fundraiser will take place at all Salad and Go locations across the Valley. Go to saladandgo.com for more information.

Real Estate Is COVID-19 Making a Difference in Local Real Estate? By Joseph Callaway

W

hen comparing the 6-month period from February 15 to August 15 for last year versus this year, we see some interesting trends. Sales volume is down 7 percent to 10 percent, while prices are up 9 percent to 13 percent. Also, homes are selling 11 to 13 days faster. From these numbers, it looks like the COVID-19 pandemic has had little effect on folks wanting to buy or sell homes. Instead, these numbers indicate a normal fluctuation in the

market. It looks like we have more buyers than sellers right now and the market remains in good health. Joseph Callaway is co-owner of Those Callaways Real Estate, Arizona’s leading independent brokerage with offices in 85254. Learn more at ThoseCallaways. com or call 480596-5751.

Legal How the Revocable Trust Works for You By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

T

he Revocable Living Trust is valuable for many estate planning needs, but one of the most obvious is the avoidance of all the time and expense of probate.

I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. Your assets, the things you worked and saved hard to have go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee. If you can’t take care of your treasure chest anymore, either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets in your treasure chest. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, stock brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in

your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign and record a deed to the house. The deed says that John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. You do the same thing with your bank account, brokerage account and other assets. With the Trust, while you are alive and competent, you control your financial affairs much the same as you do without a trust. You manage your assets, receive the income, pay bills, buy and sell property and so on. You have full control. Your Trust also designates who will be in charge if you can’t manage things any longer, either because of death of incapacity. The Trust tells the successor trustee how they are to manage the trust

assets and distribute money for your benefit if you are incapacitated. The Trust also contains your instructions for wrapping up your estate and distributing your assets at death. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, the person who you have asked to be your successor trustee will certainly notice a difference in how much smoother it is to step in and take care of your financial affairs at incapacity or death. If you have questions about whether a Trust is right for you, I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your specific situation and what would work best for you. Tortilla Flat A Piece of Arizona’s Old West History

W

By Jamie Killin

hile Arizona has come a long way from its Old West roots as Phoenix becomes one the country’s largest and fastest-growing cities, there are still places that hold a piece of Arizona’s timeless history and transport its visitors back to simpler times, when the not-yet-state served as a mining destination within relatively unexplored land. One of these places is Tortilla Flat, a Western town in the Tonto National Forest approximately 30 minutes outside of Apache Junction. The town’s history dates back to 1904 when it was established as a stop along the Apache Trail and as a settlement for workers who hand-built the Roosevelt Dam. Over the years, Tortilla Flat has had several iterations – even rebuilding on the opposite side of the road from where it presently sits after a flash flood in 1943. More than four decades later, Tortilla Flat was forced to rebuild yet again, after a 1987 fire that began in the restaurant engulfed nearly the entire town. However, the history hasn’t been all disaster – the town has welcomed famous guests including the likes of President Theodore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, John Wayne, and Barbara Streisand. It’s also been home to a zoo and even served as the backdrop of Western films, as well as helping to inspire the book “Thunder God’s Gold,” and subsequent film, “Lust for Gold.” Today, the town is a family-friendly attraction and relic of Arizona’s past. It is a fully independent town and has six residents that call it home. Residents and frequent visitors of Tortilla Flat have seen recent upgrades to the

town property including a revamped menu at the Superstition Saloon and Restaurant and new decorative touches. The town continues to maintain its history as it looks toward its next 100 years, refreshing the look of property, partnering with more local vendors for the mercantile, and remaining a familyfriendly destination. During a trip to Tortilla Flat visitors can enjoy scenic mountain views just minutes away from Canyon Lake, taste southwestern cuisine at the restaurant and saloon, shop Arizonainspired gifts at the mercantile, or try prickly pear gelato at the Country Store – known for being the largest purveyor of prickly pear gelato in the world, as well as a destination for necessary goods and one-of-a-kind food items like prickly pear honey and cactus salsa. Before leaving, all Tortilla Flat visitors should try some of the town saloon’s famous chili, which has been made using the same recipe for 80 years and is now incorporated into Tortilla Flat’s Killer Chili Dog, Chili Burger and the classic Killer Bowl of Chili. Tortilla Flat also boasts a museum that is an exact replica of the schoolhouse where the local children gathered to learn in the 1930s. While exploring the small museum, guests will learn about the development of Tortilla Flat, including the history of its owners dating back through to early 1900s. Take a journey out to the Wild West and visit Tortilla Flat, open seven days a week. For more information, visit tortillaflataz.com or call 480-984-1776.

ECONOMIC UPDATE: COVID Resurgence Could Threaten Recovery

T

he United States set a somber record on Thursday, July 16, 2020, with more than 75,000 new COVID-19 cases. In fact, the U.S. set new single-day COVID-19 records 11 times between June 17 and July 16. Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts the country will soon top over 100,000 new cases each day. COVID-related deaths are also increasing in some states. Florida set its single day record for COVID deaths on July 16, with 156. Nine other states also set single-day death records the same week. The resurgence in coronavirus cases has led some states to enact new measures. More than half of all states now have some kind of mask mandate. California has even rolled back its reopening, closing bars, indoor dining, gyms, and more. What does this mean for the economic recovery? And what does it mean for your financial future? It’s impossible to predict what will happen in the short-term but knowing where things stand today may help you make important decisions with your strategy. Stock Market The stock market continues to rally in spite of the increasing COVID numbers and the return of restrictions. As of July 16, the S&P 500 is nearly back to even for the year. In fact, it’s up 43.71% since hitting a low 2237 on March 23. NASDAQ set a record-high on July 9 when it reached 10,617. The continued gains are good news for investors, especially after the sharp decline in March. However, that decline also shows us just how quickly the market can turn, especially if state governments introduce new orders that close businesses.

Solution on page 19.

If you’re concerned about another potential downturn or future risk, this could be the right time to explore risk-protection strategies. For example, products like annuities allow you to participate in a portion of the market upside but also protect you against losses. A financial professional can help you

determine which risk-management strategy is right for you. Unemployment While new unemployment claims have declined since March, there are still more than double their level during the height of the Great Recession in 2009. Stimulus In March, the government passed the CARES Act, which, among other things, provided direct stimulus payments to many Americans. A recent study found that 74% of recipients had used all of their stimulus payments within four weeks. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact Americans, Congress is considering a second round of stimulus payments. In May, the House of Representatives passed the $3 trillion HEROES Act to provide a second round of direct stimulus payments. In an interview in mid-July, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin indicated that a second round of stimulus payments was a possibility, even if it doesn’t align exactly with the HEROES Act. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell and President Trump have also recently expressed their willingness to negotiate a second stimulus package. While stimulus payments may provide a nice boost, they’re not a replacement for longterm strategy.
