August 31 Is Final Deadline for APS Customers

By Erick O’Donnell As we pointed out in our last column, it’s a lot easier for members of a community to solve a problem when they have caring public servants on their side. And we’ll give credit where it’s due: officials in this state give plenty of verbal support to the idea of leaving unreliable, dirty, increasingly expensive fossil fuels behind and, in their place, powering Arizona with its own most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy.

But actions speak louder than words, and earlier this month, the state’s utility regulators had a chance to show, loud and clear, just how committed they are to fostering the growth of Arizona’s grassroots transition to clean power. Unfortunately, the Arizona Corporation Commission voted to approve APS’s application to reduce the “buyback amount,” which is the per-unit price it pays solar-system owners for the surplus electricity they feed back to the grid. (The reduction—a 10% drop in the price that APS pays a homeowner for each kilowatt-hour put back into the grid— will become effective for new system purchasers who apply for a grid connection after August 31.)

Just so we’re clear about the stakes involved here, this is a change that could push rooftop solar further away from being financially viable for Arizona families. For that reason, the new buyback rate, like any other key public policy, should meet two basic criteria: logical justification and fairness. It fails to pass either test.

Beginning in September, APS will pay solar customers less for their electricity at the same time it’s charging customers a newly hiked rate. The commission approved a rate increase in May that allows APS to charge 30 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.30 per kWh) during peak power usage, a price that will dwarf what new solar customers will get by a ratio of more than 3½. It defies common sense to suggest that the ever-widening gap between the power company’s returns and those of its customers reflects the economic or technical needs of our energy system.

“It is very difficult to imagine an argument that would explain how a commodity could be worth $.30 on one side of the meter and only worth $.084 on the other side of the meter,” wrote Michael O’Donnell, a partner at Peoria-based SunSolar Solutions, in a letter to the commission. “Nor is it reasonable that the same commodity would be going up 26 percent on

one side and down 10 percent on the other.”

O’Donnell added: “This is especially egregious when you consider that APS has been granted a monopoly, while the consumer who invests in a renewable power plant is subject to a monopsony.” (A monopsony is the sole purchaser of a commodity in a given market.)

This latest decision comes on the heels of a series of similar reductions over the past five years, which have strained the financial viability of rooftop solar. Before the commission eliminated net metering in 2017 (under which solar households sold their electricity for the same price at which they purchased it), solar customers needed to produce 100 percent of their annual consumption to end up with a monthly bill under $20.

Subsequent rate reductions then increased that ratio to where it stands today, at approximately 140 percent, necessitating bigger systems and greater investment costs. If this latest reduction is approved, that ratio will further swell to 150 percent. (And money isn’t even the only constraint— roof space, unlike the sun’s energy itself, is not free or unlimited.)

That burden cannot increase indefinitely without, at some point, turning a solar system into a net financial liability for a family rather than an asset.

Val Berechet, owner of SunSolar Solutions, made that point directly to the commission during a public hearing earlier this month.

“I think there is going to be a tipping point, where it’s not going to make sense any longer,” Berechet told the commissioners. “And I really think we’re getting to that point.”

The change makes even less sense considering solar power’s dramatically lower cost in terms of natural resources. As former commissioner Bob Burns has pointed out, each solar system saves millions of gallons of water that would otherwise be consumed by a power plant—in the middle of a drought-stricken desert state. Furthermore, millions of people across the world right now are experiencing a heat wave that is unprecedented in its severity and geographical extent, a fact that should underscore the urgency of switching to non-polluting energy sources—fast.

Induction into the prestigious Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame is an honor bestowed this year to only 23 of the company’s 100,000 employees nationwide. Tenet Healthcare is Abrazo Scottsdale’s parent company.

With a sunny disposition well-known to hospital employees and visitors at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, Coleman overcame a serious brush with COVID-19 and is the hospital’s number one cheerleader.

Coleman was nominated for outstanding service in 2021 by his supervisor Jean Revard, food and nutrition director at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus. During the height of the pandemic Coleman, who had been vaccinated, was hospitalized at Abrazo Scottsdale with COVID. “Gerry went through very rough days.

With the help of our great nurses and doctors at Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, he recovered and did not need to go to ICU. One of the doctors told Gerry if he had not been vaccinated, he would not have survived. Gerry had not missed work in the eight years he had been here. The first few days after he returned to work, whenever I heard spontaneous applause, I just knew someone else had just run into Gerry,” says Revard.

“Gerry had always been such a promoter of Abrazo Scottsdale Campus to everyone he met––whether it was in the grocery store, the cafeteria, on a patient unit. Now he was a promoter of the vaccines, and he was telling everyone about the caring doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and asking people to trust our great medical experts,” says Revard.

“He was the most positive person to everyone who was still debating the vaccines and gave his story in a way that inspired people and did not make them feel guilty or bad because they had not yet received the vaccine. He talked to anyone who asked about his experience– employees, doctors, and nurses,” she says Coleman was also recognized for his compassion for people, from the doctor talking to him about his favorite restaurants, to the employee asking for help, to the patient asking for more food, and to the person ordering their cappuccino at the coffee shop. Hospital leaders frequently receive feedback on how helpful, funny, and caring he is.

“The Tenet Heroes program celebrates those individuals who make a meaningful impact within their communities that goes above and beyond their daily responsibilities. That description fits Gerry to a ‘T’,” says Abrazo Scottsdale Campus CEO Naman Mahajan.

Replacing the old and un-used bunkhouse building with a beautiful new multiuse space will do just that,” says Bryan Bundy, community services business operations manager. “Thanks to the mechanical society’s donation, it will include an indoor train-themed play structure, and we will add event spaces and a new shaded outdoor area.”

“The Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society believes the project is a wise investment of community funding,” says Eric Damko, a society representative.

“The improvements will enhance the long-term viability of Scottsdale and the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park as a premier destination for families and visitors.”

In addition to the society’s donation, Scottsdale has committed $7.5 million to the renovation. The project is

funded through the city’s Capital Improvement Program and is expected to be complete in 2024.

In 1967, the McCormick Family donated 100 acres of land to the city of Scottsdale, stipulating that the land be used to create a park for all to enjoy. In 1971, Guy Stillman chartered the Scottsdale Railroad & Mechanical Society as part of the donation agreement. The society provides technical expertise to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park and raises money through private donations and carousel ticket revenues to support park projects.

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park opened in October 1975 and is part of Scottsdale’s nationally recognized and accredited parks and recreation system. Entrance to the park is free, tickets to enjoy the train and carousel are available to purchase.

Last month, Keim’s job took an unusual turn. On a hot July Saturday, Keim was removing moss from an area of the Arizona Canal on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community when she noticed a horse standing waist-deep in the water.

“The horse was near one of our equipment entrance ramps and did not appear to be in distress and was even blowing bubbles with its nose,” says Keim. “It was a very warm morning, and I didn’t think twice about it being in the water as we often see the wild horses in the area enter the canal to cool off.”

Keim left the area to inspect another section of the canal, and when she returned around noon to clear more moss, she noticed the horse was in the exact same location, facing the same direction – although this time it was further out of the water than before.

“I hadn’t realized earlier that morning that it was kneeling on all four knees. I grew concerned that it may be injured, stuck in some mud or that it couldn’t get its footing as the moss can be slippery,” Keim said. “Once I realized that he could be injured and knowing the history of the beloved Salt River wild horse population, I was determined to get him out of the water.”

With temperatures approaching 110 degrees, Keim

then contacted SRP’s Association Dispatch Center to advise them of the situation and cautiously approached the horse to see what assistance she could provide. After determining the horse was not alarmed by her presence, Keim managed to get the animal to turn around, but not up the ramp and out of the water.

After calling her colleague and fellow water master Chris Crosland to help, it was then Keim turned to a tried-and-true wild west approach.

“I retrieved a rope from my truck and tied a large loop in the end. I was able to lasso him and pull him a few feet towards the ramp,” Keim says. “I teamed up with Chris, using the rope and the pole to carefully pull the horse and help shuffle his legs up the ramp. It took some time, but he finally gathered his footing and made his way safely up the ramp. Eventually, he crossed the canal road, into the shade and began eating some brush. I watched him disappear into the trees.”

“I had to do everything in my power to make sure that he was okay. It was a great reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, you never know what could happen!”

Throughout the year, SRP crews are on the canal system performing a number of jobs to ensure the reliable and safe delivery of water to the Valley.

If you use the canal banks, please follow these safety tips: • Do not enter the canal water under any circumstance.

• Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, and tubing in canals is prohibited.

• Keep a close watch on children, and make sure to teach them about canal safety.

• Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the canal banks (authorization from SRP is required).

• Stay away from automated equipment at water delivery gates.

• Call 911 for help if a person, pet, or object falls into the canal water.

City News Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee Launches Volunteer Program Over 5,000 Volunteers Needed to be Part of TEAM AZ for Events Surrounding Super Bowl LVII THE ARIZONA SUPER BOWL HOST COMMITTEE LAUNCHED ITS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM, TEAM AZ, PRESENTED BY AVNET AND PETSMART. The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee is seeking 5,000 high-energy individuals to help welcome and assist residents and visitors as they take part in events around the Valley for Super Bowl LVII. “Having hosted the Super Bowl three times previously, Arizonans are well versed in how to welcome visitors and fans and help them enjoy their time here,” says Jay Parry, president and chief executive officer of the Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee.

“Creating a positive experience for guests is a top priority, and TEAM AZ will be at the forefront of making that happen. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for locals to be in on the action of Super Bowl festivities.”

Volunteers will help the Host Committee, a private, non-profit organization, and the state of Arizona by serving as ambassadors

at key areas including airports, hotels, official Host Committee, and other events prior to and after the game. Opportunities for TEAM AZ begin as early as this month with the kickoff of Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee community events.

Interested participants must be at least 18 years old at the time of submission and go through a formal application process, including a background check. The Host Committee will hold a kickoff event and mandatory role-specific training leading up to festivities.

TEAM AZ volunteers must commit to three shifts ranging from four to six hours each. In addition to being a part of numerous events, volunteers will receive custom-designed apparel that can be worn while volunteering, including a jacket, polo shirt, and hat.

Valley fever commonly resolves on its own, but more severe infections require antifungal treatments by a doctor.

“Most cases of Valley fever go unrecognized and untreated, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” says Dr. Drachler. “About 60% of patients who are infected come and see a doctor, and of them, probably half of the cases I see don’t require treatment. In most people with healthy immune systems, treatment with antifungal medications isn’t necessary.”

However, if your symptoms are severe, see your doctor to make sure your body doesn’t need help fighting the infection.

Phoenix Children’s, SRP Partner to Implement Innovative Approach to Reduce Child Drownings

I

n an effort to improve water safety messaging and reduce child drownings in Arizona, SRP is supporting Phoenix Children’s by partnering to support the health system’s drowning prevention curriculum to pediatricians’ practices statewide.

With funding from SRP, Phoenix Children’s is furthering their longstanding work to reduce drownings through a first-of-its-kind drowning prevention program that will provide pediatricians throughout Arizona with the tools and training they need to educate families about water safety during regularly scheduled well-child visits for children who are at highest risk of drowning.

“The partnership with SRP means more pediatricians will have access to evidence-based drowning prevention curriculum and resources,” says Tiffaney Isaacson, senior injury prevention specialist at Phoenix Children’s Center for Family Health & Safety. “This is a critical aspect of preventive care for families with young children, especially in Arizona.

Our programming helps clinicians engage families in concise, meaningful conversations about risk

factors and strategies based on the child’s age and developmental stage.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is the number one cause of death in children from ages 1 to 4. In Arizona, the rate of drowning is nearly twice the national average.

“As the largest provider of water to the Valley, SRP understands the importance of water safety. Most drownings take place in swimming pools and can occur silently and swiftly, which is why we work closely with cities and agencies around the Valley to help our community partners educate families about the importance of water safety,” says Regina Lane Haycock, SRP’s water safety community engagement strategist.

Phoenix Children’s designed the curriculum to dovetail with clinician and caregiver discussions on typical developmental milestones for young children. When a parent visits a trusted medical provider, they will also be armed with information on how to keep their little one safe around the pool or any body of water.

“For example, parents of a 2-year-old will learn about their child’s thinking, physical and social skills, such as their interest in climbing and scrambling and their tendency to break rules,” says Isaacson. “These conversations will help parents understand their toddler’s risk factors at a much more personal level and bring the importance of water safety to life in a powerful way. Our goal is simple: to save children’s lives.”

Program development and recruitment have taken place through Phoenix Children’s Care Network, one of the nation’s largest clinically integrated networks.

PCCN pediatricians who opt into this program receive training during two instructional sessions and can earn Maintenance of Certification Part IV credits from the American Board of Pediatrics. They also have ongoing access to the health system’s injury prevention team as questions and needs arise. Phoenix Children’s provides supplemental materials, including provider newsletters, exam room posters and caregiver handouts in English and Spanish, and sunscreen packets for patient families, to underscore the water safety messaging.

A Scottsdale-based program connects police officers and the community to keep kids safe

eeping our children safe is a top priority and the Hands On Safety program, ran by the Scottsdale Police Department (PD) Foothills District Crime Prevention Team, was created to do just that. “The Hands On Safety program is designed to engage with children to help them make decisions about their safety,” says Officer Rob Katzaroff.

Safety is focused on educating children at community and school events. “Kids are given information on safety by officers to cover both fire and police matters.

They are taught about calling 911, fire safety, bike safety, gun safety, car safety, water safety, and stranger danger. As a pledge to stay safe, the kids are given an opportunity to place their handprint on a police car and get their picture taken with an officer, and if supplies last, are given a coloring book to reinforce the message,” Katzaroff explains.

The program was started by former Scottsdale Police Department Officer David Kamleiter and current Police Aid Sherri Hawkinson. “One of our officers had heard of something like this being done at another agency [placing handprints on a police car] and suggested it to our team as a potentially fun idea to do in conjunction with some of the events we do out in the community,” Hawkinson says.

Before the initial pandemic shutdowns, the officers tested the event concept at two events, and it was a hit. “The smiles from everyone involved have been so worth it,” Hawkinson says.

“Officer Katzaroff transferred into crime prevention during COVID and had been chomping at the bit to get out and interact with people in-person. As soon we got the blessing from upper staff, he started planning on how to get this program rolling again and started incorporating it with school safety visits…Once the weather cools off a bit, I’m sure you’ll be seeing a bunch more of these events.”

As the Hands On Safety program gets back out into the community, it is available to Scottsdale-based schools and community organizations upon request and availability.

“The Hands On Safety program is designed to help foster positive

relationships between the community and police department in a fun, interactive way while, at the same time, helping to keep our kids safe,” says Katzaroff. “As crime prevention officers and police aides, our goal is to form partnerships with our communities and help reduce crime.”

High Schooler Logan Rose is Stepping Up to the Plate Again for the Third Annual Western WIFFLE Ball Classic

F

ollowing the success of the last two Western WIFFLE Ball Classics, its founder, 15-year-old Logan Rose, is excited to bring back the popular event for a third year.

Rose, a Paradise Valley resident, began his journey in the sport by creating Big League WIFFLE Ball in July of 2019. In less than three years, Rose had grown such a dedicated following that in 2020 he decided to host a tournament for all ages at the Fenway Park of spring training, Scottsdale Stadium.

The 2022 tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 29 and will allow for up to 42 teams to enjoy a competitive championship tournament. All fields will be set up on Scottsdale Stadium’s main field, home to the San Francisco Giants spring training.

Teams will be comprised of three to five players, each team guaranteed to play three games each. Games will last 35 minutes or four innings, whichever comes first. Then, 16 teams will advance to a single-elimination tournament.

All ages are welcome and encouraged to participate in the tournament. The winner and runner-up will be awarded the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic trophy.

“These past two years have been amazing. It has been so great to see

so many people get involved in the tournament,” says Rose. “My goals for the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic include growing it to one of the largest Wiffle ball tournaments in the league. I think having over 50 teams participating one day would be awesome. Among my goals for Big League Wiffle Ball are to get a bigtime feature by a sports network such as ESPN and to grow to over 100,000 total followers across social media.”

“I was inspired to start the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic after creating a four-team wiffle ball league in my backyard during the summer when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit. Playing wiffle ball on those hot summer days brought a lot of those players, including myself, so much joy that we were all disappointed when the season came to an end. The success of the season called for something bigger and better, the Western WIFFLE Ball Classic at Scottsdale Stadium,” says Rose, who had help in starting the tournament from someone near and dear.

“My dad was a major help in starting this tournament through his past experience in starting various events. It was very helpful to learn from him and hear his input on the event,” says Rose.

For those who don’t know what the sport is, Rose explains: “Wiffle ball is essentially mini baseball with a plastic ball that can curve, drop, rise, etc., way more than a regular baseball. For the most part, rules and the overall format are very similar to baseball. However,

SCHOOL SAFETY FIVE QUESTIONS ALL PARENTS SHOULD ASK SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

s parents, it’s inevitably on our minds, sending our kids back to school after ending the 2022 school year drowning in horrific headlines. Surely, we can’t help but ponder a Uvdale-like situation happening in our community, leaving us unsettled, worrisome, and nauseated.

The experts at Pro Defense Advisors out of Scottsdale says 83% of attacks last five minutes or less; 44% end in one minute. In addition, the average police response time in the United States is seven to 10 minutes. Let that sink in.

So, what can parents do to proactively play a role in ensuring the safety of local schools? Well, Pro Defense Advisors suggests asking your district and administrators five safety questions. Such inquiries will better educate parents on protocol, as well as encourage schools to achieve maximum safety measures.

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS TO GET THE CONVERSATION STARTED.

QUESTION 1: Does your campus have a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO) program?

Why Ask: A dedicated SRO should be officed and assigned to your school for the 40-hour workweek and not split between other locations. The officer should have a fully marked patrol vehicle, usually parked in the front of the building. The role of the SRO is to be a dedicated security agent constantly patrolling campus. They also

have several duties other than security, such as teaching safety classes, increasing community engagement, and responding to regular services calls.

QUESTION 2: Has the school district conducted a full Threat Vunerability Assessment (TVA)?

QUESTION 5: Does the school have a standard EOP for any type of emergency (attacker, flood, fire, etc.)?

Why Ask: This plan should outline policy and procedures for the FEMA protocols. The Incident Command System (ICS) should be in place and the school staff should be properly trained. School staff will likely be the first and last line of defense for any critical incident at your school.

QUESTION 3: What is the school’s Lockdown Plan and Drill Schedule?

Why Ask: A Lockdown Plan and performing regular drills, like fire drills, are incredibly important, as it gives teachers and students practice should a real-life situation occur. Food for thought: fire drills are usually conducted once per month, and the last child that perished in a school fire was 1958. Statistics have shown that no child has been killed behind a locked classroom door during an active shooting situation. What is your school’s drill and protocol?

QUESTION 4: Does your school have a Parent/ Guardian Reunification Plan?

Why Ask: A Parent/Guardian Reunification Plan should be clearly communicated with parents/guardians prior to school beginning for the semester. This plan outlines

Our problem was we couldn’t part with about 10,000 books. So, we needed some other way to make money.”

As a result, they got real estate licenses.

REAL ESTATE 101 IN SCOTTSDALE At first, JoAnn wasn’t interested in selling houses, but Joseph sold her on the idea of investing in property.

While they didn’t have money to invest or real estate experience, the Callaways hung their licenses in a Scottsdale Realty One office and proceeded to learn the business.

Joseph stamped their name and home address on the back of their new real estate business cards and put them on the doors of the 50 closest houses to theirs. “I didn’t want to talk to anybody,” he says. “I didn’t know what to say.”

The Callaway’s first listing came from a woman down the street who got their business card off her door and walked to their house. From there, JoAnn and Joseph continued to open their front door, step out, and meet the neighbors. “We got to know everybody,” says JoAnn. Eventually, the Callaways were mailing postcards to the entire 85254 ZIP code, which is 15,000 homes total.

THE CALLAWAY’S KEYS TO SUCCESS Success in the real estate industry is more than leaving business cards on neighbors’ doors and direct marketing. Joseph and JoAnn also attended real estate conferences. “They were all about systems and processes, but the client wasn’t part of the discussion,” says JoAnn, “and our whole business was about the client.”

When you call Those Callaways, you get JoAnn or Joseph on the phone. They delegate some behind-thescenes projects to the team, such as real estate escrow to the brokers, two of whom are their daughter and grandson. “One of us comes out to your house to list it.

Then if there’s an offer, one of us is there with you to take it,” explains JoAnn.

The personal relationship with their clients was the difference the Callaways offered and what inspired them to write Clients First: The Two Word Miracle (Wiley 2012).

“It was a great experience because we examined what we did and how we did it,” says Joseph, who added that it took the couple six years to write.

“We can feed the hungry, protect the abused, and shelter the homeless,” JoAnn says. “We can do good by doing good. Our industry image should reflect the generosity in our hearts.”

The Callaways came up with three keys to putting clients first: honesty, competence, and care. “If you’re honest with the client and you’re competent in what you do, and you care about them, that makes the difference.”

Joseph says whether clients want too much or too little for their house or want to buy a house out of their budget, it’s JoAnn and his responsibility as their Realtors to help them buy or sell at the right price.

“I’ve gone out to people’s houses, and they’ve been unrealistic about how much they want for it, and other clients have wanted to sell their house for much less than it’s worth,” he says. “Looking out for clients’ best interests is what a real estate agent is supposed to do.

Sometimes people don’t know what that is, and we help them with it.”

The Callaway’s favorite part of the work is the first and last house. “The first-time homebuyer is changing their lives because they’re moving from being a renter to an owner. That’s what makes a house a home. When our client is an older couple selling their last home for retirement, we want to take care of them and get them top dollar because it’s often all the money in the world to them.”

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE ‘MAGIC ZIP CODE’?

The Callaways rented in Old Town Scottsdale before making an 85254 house a home. They love living in the “Magic ZIP code,” which they named because it has a Scottsdale mailing address even though it’s in Phoenix city limits. That means lower taxes and utilities, more flexible zoning, and a much easier building permit process. It also has good access to freeways, shopping, top-rated schools in the Paradise Valley School District, and more.

The couple also started Real Estate for Rehabilitation in Phoenix to collect gently used goods from the homeownership industry to fund The Salvation Army rehabilitation centers.

“The homeownership industry and The Salvation Army’s shared interests in family values, food on the table, and a roof over everyone’s heads make for a powerful partnership,” says Joseph.

Before sharing their hearts with The Salvation Army, the Callaways shared Christmas sentiments with clients and agents during the holiday season. When they had 30 clients in 1998, it was affordable to buy a gift for everyone and personalize it.

“And then we had too many clients,” Joseph says. So, they hired a woman who made ornaments out of bread dough. JoAnn designed a different door ornament each year from salt, water, and flour, and the woman executed her creation by the thousands. Now they commission a Christmas scene by a renowned artist to make into an ornament.

Last year, the Callaways mailed 20,000 of them.

RINGING TRUE IN CALLAWAY REALTY While Joseph and JoAnn enjoy the amenities of their home in the 85254 neighborhoods, they realize more than 5,000 people live on the streets of metro Phoenix. That’s why they’ve volunteered on The Salvation Army’s Phoenix Advisory Board since 2013. The nonprofit invited Joseph and JoAnn to join the advisory board after learning about their book’s message of honesty, competence, and care.

Is it Time to Update Your Old Trust?

I

review many trusts. Some are quite old, and my client knows it is time for an update. Other times, they were done not terribly long ago, but the laws have changed. How do you know when it is time to update your trust?

There are a couple of key dates that give some answers. First, the Arizona Trust Code was enacted in 2008, to become effective in 2009. The Arizona Trust Code changed the law governing trusts in a substantial way. Thus, if your trust was done around this time or before, an update is in order.

Another key date is 2012. Before 2012, estate taxes were an issue for many people. As an example: In 2001, the federal law gave each person an estate tax exemption of $675,000. That meant that if your total assets were more, your family might end up paying estate taxes of 40% on anything over $675,000.

Older trusts had complicated planning to avoid estate taxes because of the low exemption amounts. However, you may not need that complicated plan today, because each person’s estate tax exemption is now over $12 million (but will be reduced to about $6.5 million in 2026).

The old planning to avoid estate taxes usually involved creating a second, irrevocable trust on the death of one of the spouses. This was called “A” and

“B” trust planning. While the surviving spouse still benefits from both trusts, the irrevocable trust cannot be changed and has its own tax identification number and its own separate tax return.

If you don’t have a taxable estate, the division into two trusts at the death of the first spouse may not only be unnecessary but undesirable. When we look at whether to update these provisions of your trust, we analyze all of this and decide what is best for you given your situation and how the estate tax laws impact you.

Elvis The story of the king of rock and roll from beginning to end.

The Black Phone A young boy receives calls from the dead after being kidnapped by a serial killer.

The Black Phone does a very good job at managing to keep a fast pace despite its locations being limited.

You’re enthralled by the imprisonment of Finney and his attempts to get out, while simultaneously seeing the supernatural side play out with his sister and her sort of detective story. All of this is obviously helped by the actors, specifically the child leads and Ethan Hawke’s rare turn in a villain role. But also, director Scott Derrickson gives the film the creepy, urban legend vibe that’s grounded by the 1970s setting. It’s the kind of pulp that still has some meat on its bones that was common from the horror genre 30 to 40 years ago, and it’s one any genre fan can enjoy.

David Cronenberg’s return to movie making is well-timed, and the focus on pollution and climate change and how it will affect our bodies is a horror that’s presented as a morbid beauty from the perspective of our characters.

Characters who will change their organs for art, pleasure, or to eat plastic, and each of the actors showcase those emotions from fascination to despair.

Léa Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen are of course excellent as a patient-doctor couple, but Scott Speedman stands out as an odd, sniveling figure whose life and work is falling apart around him. Howard Shore’s booming score is the defining feature to the apocalyptic world that’s just barely held together.

This is another reminder of what Cronenberg is capable of and how impactful his tales of human disasters are.

Visuals that showcase what might as well be from another world, but also a showcase of just how truly driven and passionate these two were—that pursuit of the discovery of something grand while keeping a loving relationship that still was a tightrope walk for the two of them. Miranda July’s narration is a perfect bow on top, to bring home the melancholic feel of it all. What a wonderful way to tell an underseen story.

Why You Still Have Shoulder Pain

(And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)

s doing everyday things like finding a comfortable sleeping position difficult because of shoulder pain? You may find it hard to enjoy those around you because you’re in pain. You may have already tried “everything,” but the difficulty is finding the things that will help and actually last. It seems like even things that help are only temporary fixes. Maybe you’ve started to think you’re just stuck with a bad shoulder.

Shoulder pain isn’t something you just have to deal with. And it’s not always fixed by stretching or surgery or painkillers. Not all shoulder pain is the same. Some is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while other cases can be caused by stiff joints. Essentially, muscular dysfunction (often triggered by injury or poor form) will cause fatigued, overworked muscles to work overtime because your brain has stopped using your smaller stabilizing muscles to do their jobs. The problem is in the communication between your brain and your body.

This is the reason so many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief–they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, shoulder pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

So how do you fix shoulder pain? You retrain the brain. Exercises that strengthen under-used muscles and remind your brain which muscles it should be using and in what order keep the pain from returning (and getting worse).

If you’re active and conventional advice like resting and “taking it easy” isn’t working for you, you don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love.

You’ve likely already tried many different things.

Usually the list includes massage, stretching, chiropractic, and different exercises. One of my patients, Neal, was getting ready to see a surgeon because nothing he tried lasted.

Neal told me, “I was facing a shoulder replacement on my left side before my treatments at DPT.” Most shoulder pain is reversible. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back.

Often without surgery or pills.

The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the brain has stopped using your small muscles to stabilize your skeleton and instead relies on the big muscles to stabilize and move your body. After a while, these new instructions become hardwired into the brain. Now your muscles are getting fatigued and clamping down on joints that eventually leads to them grinding against one another.

No matter what you do to relax the muscles, the pain will continue unless you fix the instructions your brain is sending.

These instructions are what CAUSE shoulder pain.

The 7 Most Common “Fixes”... That Don’t Work Long Term 1. Stretching: It helps for a little bit, but the pain will keep coming back because it doesn’t address the root cause of the pain.

2. Hot-packs or hot showers: These feel good in the moment and help get blood-flow to the muscles, but are only temporary fixes.

3. Massage: It feels good for a few days but then it comes back.

4. Chiropractic care: It eased the pain a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.

5. Painkillers: You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds and told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.

6. Physical Therapy: You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with shoulder pain gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.

Activities To Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your shoulder pain worse.

Stop Testing If Your Pain Is Still There: Many times, the shoulder starts to feel better, and just to check, people start doing things to see if it’s gone. It would be like continuing to stick a piece of paper into a papercut as it heals. It’ll never have the chance to fully heal.

Avoid Sleeping On Your Shoulder: This can be tough, especially if you tend to turn in your sleep. Try rolling a small hand towel and placing it underneath your fitted sheet. Then, place another one just far enough away to make a slot for you to sleep in on your back.

Ignoring It: If this strategy hasn’t worked for you up until now, you’re not getting closer to a breakthrough.

Trust me, there’s no prize for persistence in this category.

How to Fix shoulder Pain for the Long Term These days, Neal has picked up mountain biking and says, “I can now perform work overhead with next to no pain.” Neal’s been able to get back to the active lifestyle he loves, no surgery required.
