City News Scottsdale Quarter Launches Free Summer Sweat Series TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING DURING THIS UNCERTAIN TIME, SCOTTSDALE QUARTER WILL HOST A WEEKLY SUMMER SWEAT SERIES WITH LOCAL INSTRUCTORS FROM BARRE3, TRUEFUSION AND EVOLVE YOGA AZ TO OFFER FREE FITNESS SESSIONS IN THE QUAD. Classes will be held every Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-September. To help reinforce social distancing measures, guests should bring their own mat, towel, and water, as well as pre-register for classes. Scottsdale Quarter will mark mat spaces 6 feet apart, however participants can choose to distance further out throughout the outdoor space available. To ensure social distancing, classes are limited to 25 people. City Ci ty NNeews Drive-In Concerts Debut in Scottsdale MONTHS INTO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING BEING THE WAY OF LIFE FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, LOCALS ARE FIGURING OUT WAYS TO CONNECT AND SOCIALIZE WHILE STILL SOCIALLY DISTANCING. Because of this, the Scottsdale City Council recently approved $50,000 toward funding a drive-in summer concert series at WestWorld, which began with the July 25 Blake Shelton concert. “R Entertainment and MCulinary, producers of the WestWorld of Scottsdale Drive-In Concert Series have requested a one-year event development agreement with the City of Scottsdale,” according to a report from the City of Scottsdale. The event series will be held at WestWorld and feature popular entertain-
ment and comedic acts through early September. Each event is expected to welcome 500 cars, averaging about 2,000 attendees each time, according to the City. “WestWorld of Scottsdale will host a summer concert series in which each performance will be filmed exclusively for a one-night-only event,” according to the City.
The Blake Shelton concert charged an average of $115 per “one passenger car, truck or sport utility vehicle with up to six people (or as many as there are legal seat belts).” Prices may vary for upcoming events. The Scottsdale Drive-In Concert Series is part of a national series. “Venues hosting these events will adhere to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, as well as state and local health mandates,” cites the City.
SOME OF THE SAFETY GUIDELINES INCLUDE: • Social distancing guidelines will be mandated. • Cars will be arranged by vehicle size and height and in accordance to social distancing guidelines and to obtain optimal viewing for all guests. • Attendees will need to print tickets and bring with them or have them on their phones. There will be no ticket sales on site. • Attendees may bring chairs and sit outside their vehicle, but will need to stay within their parking space area. Space outside of vehicle may be limited. • And more, according to WestWorld staff. Children will be provided morning and afternoon snacks as well as some basic (non-shared) school supplies. When not completing online classwork, children will have opportunities to engage in small-group activities and brain breaks in addition to utilizing many of the features The J offers including the aquatics center with two pools and a splash pad, the gymnasium, and 110,000 square feet of air-conditioned facility space spanning the entire campus. “Club J, our existing afterschool program, is a staple in the lives of local parents. It is an honor to provide Club J All Day as a solution for parents in this current climate of canceled events and delayed in-person school starts,” says Kim Subrin, chief operating officer of Martin Pear JCC. “This program allows us to not only serve our community in providing high quality child supervision and online learning support, but it also gives us the ability to hire educators and other individuals who were impacted by the pandemic.”
Parents are able to drop children off and pick up Monday through Friday during traditional school hours; after care is also available for a separate fee. A communications app will be used daily to ensure parents receive updates on their children and track online learning progress. In early May, as The J reopened to members, a stringent and detailed plan for sanitizing and keeping visitors safe was implemented with the help of their own medical taskforce. “The J is a home away from home for our members. It is exciting to open our doors and offer Club J All Day to the community when a quality solution is so desperately needed to fill the gap between the beginning of the school year that is delivered online and the eventual transition back to in-person learning,” says Jay Jacobs, chief executive officer of Martin Pear JCC. “Part of our mission is building connections that enrich mental and physical growth. City News CARES Act Funding in Scottsdale HELPING RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES THAT HAVE BEEN HIT HARD ECONOMICALLY TOP THE LIST OF WAYS THAT THE CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED MORE THAN $29 MILLION IN FEDERAL CARES ACT FUNDING BE PUT TO WORK IN SCOTTSDALE. Programs and services for Scottsdale residents in-need will receive $3 million, which will be used to provide things like meals and services for seniors and low-income families, rent and utility assistance, and programs for individuals experiencing homelessness. The council’s action also provides $5 million to support local businesses including loans, grants, commercial utility assistance, and expanded marketing campaigns to help Scottsdale businesses get back on their feet. In addition to those programs, event venues like Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Scottsdale Stadium and WestWorld, are among 30 city buildings that could receive healthfriendly upgrades including automatic doors and faucets, ultraviolet disinfection of air handling systems and expanded technology systems for remote work. Facilities to be upgraded also include libraries, senior centers, community centers, and City Hall. With the sudden decline in economic output during the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Congress introduced and passed the CARES Act. The act provides funding to state, local and tribal governments dealing with the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of the federal funding, Arizona cities and counties received about $441 million in COVID-19 relief fund, known as the AZCares Fund. City and county populations determined the specific amount each would receive. The city of Scottsdale received $29,628,014. The money will be appropriated based on two funding priorities: Community Investment and City Operations. COMMUNITY INVESTMENT • Care for Vulnerable Citizens, $3 million: These include homeless, myhyperlocalnews.com
senior and low-income programs such as day relief centers, work training, food bank expansion, meal programs, Adopt-a-Senior and Adopt-a-Family. • Residential Utility Assistance Program: $450,000 • Community Facilities Safety Upgrades, $3,110,000: Modify large public facilities, such as the libraries, Scottsdale Stadium and museums, to limit the spread of COVID-19. • Arts and Culture Programs, $1,500,000: Assist 15 nonprofit arts and culture programs that have been and continue to be vulnerable as they are forced to allocate already limited costs. • Public Health Communications, $100,000: Develop a comprehensive and sustained communications program to support healthy practices. • Business Assistance Programs, $5,000,000: Several programs now exist; these funds will expand programs to help hard hit small businesses. These include grants, Shop Scottsdale campaign, business center, banner program, etc. CITY OPERATIONS • City Buildings Safety Retrofits, $2,220,000: Upgrade 14 city buildings that have a large number of employees and public engagement with technology and safety features. These include automatic doors, touch free fixtures, disinfection technology, etc. • Telework/Technology Expenses, $871,232: These include enhanced cyber security, teleconference equipment, etc. • Personal Protective Equipment, Sanitation, Cleaning, $1,340,000: Supplies and equipment for cleaning and sanitizing city facilities. • Emergency Response, $2,200,000: Overtime for existing personnel, equipment, supplies and testing/monitoring. • Future COVID-19 Resurgence Preparation, $2,000,000: Preparation and response for necessary overtime for existing personnel, supplies and testing/monitoring upon resurgence (if needed). • Public Safety, $4,000,000: Funding for existing personnel and programs. • Unallocated Funding, $3,836,782: Funding to be determined. Community Local Family Fundraises for a Chance to Save Their Daughter’s Life
F
ive hundred thousand dollars and five months in Italy. That’s the Riley family’s only hope for saving their 5-month-old daughter Keira, who along with her 2-year-old sister Olivia, suffers from a form of Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) so rare that they don’t even search for the mutation in today’s genetic testing.

MLD is an extremely rare, fatal brain disease that destroys the protective fatty layer (myelin sheath) surrounding the nerves in the central nervous system. Olivia’s siblings were immediately tested while Olivia began the only ongoing clinical trial for MLD patients. The treatment is not curative and cannot reverse damage already done, but seeks to slow the rapid progression of the disease while protecting and preserving quality of life. “Olivia has lost her vocabulary, cannot pronounce
most words and experiences some form of pain from moderate to severe on a daily basis,” says Kendra. “She still has a lot of smiles and her big sister Eva and baby sister Keira always make her light up.” This summer, the Rileys learned Keira also has both mutated copies of the gene and has been diagnosed with MLD. The Rileys turned to CureMLD.com and The MLD Foundation, and learned of a cutting-edge MLD gene therapy treatment only available in Milan, Italy, and it may not be covered by health insurance. Since beginning the treatment in 2010, the Institute in Italy has treated 29 patients from around the world, 26 of which are still alive. Currently asymptomatic, Keira is eligible for the therapy but not as part of the clinical trial, which means the Riley family will have to pay for her treatment out of pocket if it is not approved by insurance. The investment for treatment, lodging, travel and living expenses during treatment is estimated at $500,000. “We only have one hope left; $500,000 sounds impossible. It’s overwhelming, but if 100,000 people who hear our story are compelled to donate just $5 each – we’ll have the opportunity to save our daughter Keira’s life,” Kendra says.

This is especially true these days while kids are largely stuck at home during the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fostering a love of art, creativity, and scientific exploration is a great way to keep your youngsters thinking and growing mentally, socially, intellectually, and emotionally. No matter how you encourage your children to express themselves and their interests, the act of creating and learning will help your child grow and develop. Fortunately for us, Arizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. Most of the local museums are temporarily closed, but if you want to get the kids out of the house for a while and do something fun and educational, we found a few local venues that are open to the public right now. Be sure to call ahead or check them out online before you go, but these businesses are currently welcoming visitors, so put on your masks and give them your support. HEARD MUSEUM heard.org Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming,
and unrivaled festivals. The museum has one of the largest and most outstanding collections of American Indian artwork in the country. It includes historic, cultural, and fine art collections of more than 3,600 pieces, and extensive documentation of the development of the American Indian Fine Art Movement, starting in the 20th century.

OdySea is worth the visit and a great place to get the kids out of the house and escape the heat.

It also showcases historical exhibits depicting turn-of-the-century Wickenburg,

Education SUSD Appoints Principal for Fall Online Education
I
n order to accommodate an anticipated increase in the number of Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) students engaging in distance learning for the coming school year, two job assignments within Ingleside Middle School’s leadership are changing. Ingleside’s principal, Dr. Christopher Thuman, has been tabbed by the SUSD Governing Board to fill the new position of interim principal of the District’s online learning programs, including SUSD’s distance-learning program, Scottsdale Online Learning (SOL). SOL will be one of the learning options available to SUSD students for the first half of the new school year that starts August 10. Ingleside’s assistant principal (AP), Erin Kadera, takes over as Ingleside’s interim principal. Since 2010, SOL, a fully accredited,
online high school with classes taught by state-certified, SUSD teachers, has provided a viable high school alternative for students statewide who cannot attend a brick-and-mortar school. Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Dr. Milissa Sackos says SOL needs a strong administrator overseeing its operations as it adds grades kindergarten through 5th to its existing grade 6 - 12 offerings. Parent surveys indicate that as many as 20% of SUSD students will select the full online model this coming school year. “Dr. Thuman is an experienced school administrator who, in this new assignment, will actually be returning to his roots with SOL, which he helped SUSD create 10 years ago,” says Sackos. “He is the perfect person for this new position.”

Thuman has served as Ingleside Middle School’s principal since July 2016, starting off his SUSD career teaching biology at Desert Mountain High School. He became executive director of SUSD Community Education and Online Learning in 2008, a post he held until becoming Ingleside’s principal. Kadera returned to Ingleside’s AP post last school year after spending a year as an AP at Saguaro High School. Kadera has been an elementary school teacher, English Immersion Studies program specialist and grants administrator with SUSD, and was first hired in 1996. Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale Opens its Doors By Michelle Talsma Everson
W
hen you talk to Sherry Scott about her new venture, Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale, you can hear the excitement in her voice. This month, the state-of-the-art swimming facility dedicated to teaching children as young as four months to swim, opens its doors at the Scottsdale 101 Shopping Center (7000 E. Mayo Boulevard). The school is the first Arizona-based franchise of the popular national chain and Scott, its owner and general manager, is excited to bring the concept to the Valley. “Instilling confidence in children is such a rewarding experience and we are grateful to have the opportunity to bring such an incredible and necessary business like Goldfish Swim School to the Scottsdale community,” Scott says. “Swimming is a lifesaving skill every child deserves to have access to and Goldfish Swim School has found a way to make it fun and memorable for children.”
At Goldfish, children ages four months to 12 years old sign up for weekly swim lessons. These lessons take place in an indoor, 90-degree pool, that is 70- by 25-feet and holds 8,700 square feet of water. Lessons are provided seven days a week, including evenings and weekends, and are ongoing throughout the year—meaning you don’t need to worry about your child having to relearn how to swim every summer. “Each school offers swim lessons and programs using a proprietary philosophy, The Science of SwimPlay, to build life skills both in and out of the water using play-based learning in a fun and safe environment,” according to Goldfish Swim Schools. “Each school’s number one focus and main priority is always the same – educating children on water safety while teaching them how to swim and respect the water.” Scott shares that Goldfish Swim School operates with busy families in mind. For example, she explains, parents and caregivers can download an app and, if they cannot make a class,
they can easily let Goldfish know with the click of a button. The school also allows multiple make up classes, doing its best to accommodate its customers. Another benefit of Goldfish Swim School to parents of little ones are its “Mommy and Me” style classes where caregivers can get in the water with their littlest swimmers. Scott shares that one unique perk is that, if a young swimmer is able to safely be in the water without a caregiver, then mom and dad don’t need to get in. In addition to highly qualified swim instructors, all of whom are background checked, the pool has a lifeguard on duty at all times whose sole job it is to watch the water. “Added to the lifeguard, every 30 days, our team will do an in-service training to learn how to handle different water emergencies,” Scott says. With COVID-19 at the top of everyone’s minds, Scott assures that Goldfish Swim School – North Scottsdale is taking all of the precautions necessary.
She notes that all swim instructors will have face shields, all swim lanes will be spaced properly apart, and only one parent or caregiver will be allowed in per student. Of course, all high touch surfaces will be sanitized multiple times per day. Scott’s journey to owning and managing a Goldfish Swim School location here in the Valley began in 2018. Entrepreneurship is nothing new to the long-time Scottsdale resident as she and her husband own Cute Smiles 4 Kids & Orthodontics, with 17 doctors and four locations in Arizona and Texas. “I’ve helped grow our dental practices from the ground up, so I am passionate about the health of children and the communities we do business in,” she says. “Goldfish Swim School is my ‘baby’ though and I am so excited to be a part of the franchise.” Scott shares that she is passionate about the brand because “Goldfish is so much more than just a swim school.”

Visiting NATIONAL MONUMENTS IN ARIZONA

rizona is known for its abundant natural beauty and majestic scenery. Many of our fantastic natural resources and awe-inspiring historical sights are specially preserved for the public as National Monuments. While National Parks are created through acts of Congress and must be large enough for broad recreational and educational use by the public, National Monuments are created by presidential declaration and have historic, prehistoric, or scientific interest.
MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT, CAMP VERDE
TUZIGOOT NATIONAL MONUMENT, CLARKDALE Another fascinating example of the history of desert people in the Southwest is Tuzigoot National Monument. Visitors cannot only see the ruins of an ancient village built by the Sinagua people, they can walk through the rooms and touch the walls of the structure. The monument is north of Phoenix just outside Cottonwood, nestled at the foot of the mountain near Jerome. Tuzigoot is a fantastic day trip for sightseeing and a definite stop if you are planning to visit the Verde Valley.
There are officially 22 National Park Service units in Arizona, visited by nearly 12 million people and bringing in around $1 billion in economic impact annually. Thirteen of these areas are designated as National Monuments, and many of our favorite sites are just a short drive from the Valley of the Sun. CASA GRANDE RUINS NATIONAL MONUMENT, COOLIDGE
Just south of Chandler on the way to Tucson, you will find one of the largest freestanding prehistoric structures built in North America. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, this site is culturally and scientifically significant. It may have been gathering place, a community, or a waypoint marker for an extensive system of canals and trade routes. Regardless of its original purpose, the majestic “Great House” at Casa Grande Ruins is a well-preserved piece of Sonoran Desert history and a must see National Monument in Arizona.

If you want to head north of the Valley of the Sun, Montezuma Castle National Monument is an easy stop off Highway I-17 near Camp Verde. One of the best-preserved and most easily accessible cliff dwellings in North America, this is a beautiful place to stop on the road between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Take a break or have a picnic and enjoy the shady trees near the Verde River while taking in a breathtaking piece of Southwestern history. TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT, ROOSEVELT East of the Valley and nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain and view ancient Salado-style cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved but steep path up the mountain. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a 3-4 hour guided tour, so plan to book your visit in advance. This National Monument is a bit off the beaten path, but its historic significance and the breath-taking views of

WALNUT CANYON NATIONAL MONUMENT, FLAGSTAFF Just south of I-40 outside of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon National Monument is a scenic and historic place to visit in the tall pines of Northern Arizona. Take a hike among the ruins and cliff dwellings in the upper elevations on both easy rim trails and more difficult trails down into the canyon. This National Monument allows visitors to walk along canyon walls and through the actual pueblos of prehistoric desert inhabitants. It’s an amazing site to stop and enjoy between Phoenix and Flagstaff. Each of the National Monuments in Arizona is a special place to visit. All have important historical significance and provide breathtaking views of Arizona’s scenic natural landscape. To find these and other Arizona National Monuments, visit nps. gov.
