SCOTTSDALE QUARTER CONTINUES TO EXPAND TO MEET DEMAND — AND BECOME NORTH SCOTTSDALE’S PREMIER LUXURY LIVING HUB

THE SCOTTSDALE QUARTER ON THE CORNER OF SCOTTSDALE ROAD AND BUTHERUS DRIVE HAS EVOLVED GREATLY SINCE ITS BEGINNINGS A DECADE AGO. It continues to offer the finest in dining and retail, and surrounding the center, an entire urban luxury living community has been built up to support its growth — and more is on the way.

When it opened, the 28-acre shopping center brought many “firsts” to the area, including the state’s only American Girl Doll store and it’s first H&M clothing store. In 2015, the Crescent Scottsdale Quarter made history for the area again, becoming the area’s most expensive apartment complex at its time of opening. In addition to these new openings, several current Scottsdale 101 tenants are implementing remodels and rebranding. PINO, the quick-serve Italian eatery, is adding a new wine bar to its Scottsdale 101 location and the popular breakfast joint previously known as N’Counter underwent a rebrand and is now Daily Jam. LOVE SCOTTSDALE? YOU’RE INVITED TO BECOME AN OLD TOWN AMBASSADOR

JUST WHO ARE THOSE HELPFUL PEOPLE IN SCOTTSDALE? You may have seen them walking around or riding the trolley in salmon colored shirts and gambler hats. Or, most likely, you may have spotted them talking to people at one of two information carts located in Old Town. They are Scottsdale Ambassadors.

Our volunteer ambassadors number more than 100. Their mission is to be a welcoming face to all who visit Old Town Scottsdale. Stationed in either

the 5th Avenue Boutiques District or Historic Old Town, these volunteers are available to offer suggestions on where to eat, shop and play. They provide our visitors a friendly smile along with area maps, information on special events and brochures relating to local businesses and attractions.

The ambassadors have been around since the early 2000s offering ideas to both residents and visitors alike.

Old Town is home to many shops and restaurants unique to the area, and ambassadors get to share these great finds with everyone. According to ambassadors Justin and Margie Eringis, “It’s hard not to be excited about all that our

town has to offer - the many special seasonal events; first class restaurants; shops and galleries; social and cultural offerings; public art displays; sporting events … the list just goes on and on.”

Thirteen-year ambassador and frequent traveler Jack Leonardo, says, “I appreciate it when I get helpful information from enthusiastic people. So, I volunteer to ‘pass along’ the favor to help out visitors have a most enjoyable time here.”

Volunteering as an ambassador is engaging and fun. For Jack, volunteering has enabled him to meet interesting people. Adds Justin and Margie, “It’s

fun to hear their stories and to lead them to something in our city that will make Old Town a memorable part of their visit to Arizona.” For David Brotman, it gives him an opportunity to give back to the wonderful community.

So, the next time you are in Old Town Scottsdale, and you see one of our volunteers, stop by and say “hello!”

• Excellent indoor Environment Quality, Air Filtering and Reduced Material Emissions: The robust landscaping throughout the community, both on the ground and vertically, helps filter carbon emissions in the air. Low emitting materials are used to improve the indoor air quality.

• Park-Like Setting: More than six acres of landscaped open space on the ground level creates a parklike setting for the community and reduces ambient temperature mitigating the heat-island effect. Optima worked closely with Dr. Chris Martin from Arizona State University to develop and refine a plant palette

that thrives in the desert climate and is sensitive to the water demands. All the landscaping creates a microclimate that lowers the ambient temperature from five to nine degrees. All parking at Optima Kierland Center is underground to maximize open, green space and reduce the heat island effect.

“We’ve always been focused on pushing the envelope with each Optima development when it comes to sustainability, design and technology. It’s the right thing to do for 21st Century residential housing,” said David Hovey, Jr., AIA. “We put an emphasis on minimizing hard materials like blacktop, roads and parking lots surrounding our buildings to create more open, lush green space. We have committed ourselves to the Architecture 2030 Challenge, with the mission of being carbon-neutral by the year 2030.”

Optima Kierland Center has been named a pilot project for the City of Phoenix’s newly adopted International Green Construction Code (IGCC). SCOTTSDALE POLICE CRACKING DOWN ON DISTRACTED DRIVING

IN A CONTINUED EFFORT TO KEEP THE CITIZENS OF SCOTTSDALE SAFE, SCOTTSDALE POLICE OFFICERS WILL BE STEPPING-UP ENFORCEMENT MEASURES TO COUNTERACT THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF DISTRACTED DRIVING. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a bill

on April 22 that enacted a statewide ban on handheld cellphone use while driving. The ticketing of drivers will not start until Jan. 1, 2021 but officers can issue warnings to drivers immediately. Violating the distracted driving law is a primary offense, which means that officers can pull over drivers for that reason alone.

The law prohibits drivers from any kind of cellphone use while driving -

including to talk, text, type or browse social-media sites - unless they are using the device in a hands-free mode.

The following cellphone use is allowed when driving: • Swiping a phone screen to make or accept a phone call.

• Talking on the phone if using an earpiece, headphone device or device worn on a wrist.

• Using a GPS system.

• Using a handheld cellphone while stopped at a traffic light or stop light.

• Using a handheld cellphone to call 911.

The National Safety Council estimates that one in every four collisions is due to distracted driving. To prevent further tragedies, please put your devices down while driving and concentrate on the important task of getting to your destination safely. thescottsdalestandard.com

ARIZONA STRENGTHENS PROTECTIONS FOR VICTIMS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE GOVERNOR DOUG DUCEY RECENTLY JOINED SURVIVORS OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, VICTIM ADVOCATES AND ARIZONA STATE SENATORS PAUL BOYER AND HEATHER CARTER FOR A CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF H.B. 2466. The bill, which passed unanimously in the Arizona State Legislature, strengthens protections for victims of child sexual abuse by extending the amount of time victims have to pursue civil action against perpetrators.

“We cannot overstate the pain and trauma suffered by victims of child sexual abuse,” said Governor Ducey. “We know victims need time to process and understand what happened. They deserve the time to come forward. With this bill, Arizona is taking a

stand to hold abusers accountable and provide justice to victims of child sexual abuse. This reform did not come easily, but progress on the really important issues rarely ever does. I want to thank Senator Boyer for his dedication to the children of Arizona.”

H.B. 2466 extends the amount of time victims have to take civil action against perpetrators of child abuse from two years to 12 years, allowing victims to pursue justice up to the age of 30. The bill also allows victims who did not have the opportunity to take civil action for their abuse due to the previous two-year limit to bring a claim against their perpetrator until December 31, 2020. In addition, the bill allows civil action to be taken against an

organization that knew or had notice of the sexual conduct. The bill’s provisions allow victims of child sexual abuse to seek justice and receive relief from a perpetrator.

Before signing the bill, Governor Ducey announced the establishment of the Justice for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse Task Force. The task force will be dedicated to providing recommendations to the state for further reforms to ensure victims are entitled to safety, healing, justice and restitution. Members of the task force will consist of representatives from the law enforcement community, the Arizona House of Representatives, the Arizona Senate and advocates of victims of child sexual abuse.

Scottsdale and WestWorld received national support from the United States Equestrian Federation in its bid to produce this international event, according to WestWorld General Manager Brian Dygert. The United States Equestrian Federation is the national governing body for most equestrian sports in the United States.

“The federation’s support places Scottsdale on the international stage

as an elite venue for future equestrian competitions from around the globe,” Dygert said. “This broadens the destination appeal and capacity of Scottsdale for the future.”

WestWorld is vying to host the vaulting and reining competitions in August 2022, taking advantage of the facility’s 270,000 square feet of climate-controlled event space to bring a major event to the Valley during the heat of the summer.

The event’s Olympic and Paralympic disciplines will serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The FEI initiated a bidding process in November following its general assembly in Manama, Bahrain. Final site selection will be announced in November during the FEI General Assembly in Moscow, Russia.

3. Assessment of service fees on a sliding scale for police response to nuisance party and unruly gathering calls including in some cases assessment of such fees on landlords.

4. Civil prosecution of occupants and/or owners for holding nuisance parties or unruly gatherings including in some cases prosecution of landlords.

HOSPICE OF THE VALLEY

S

ome four decades ago, a small group of local volunteers envisioned a more compassionate way of caring for people nearing the end of their lives. They were deeply moved by a concept called “hospice” that was prevalent in England and longed to bring it to Arizona. The mission was simple: Help patients spend their last moments in their own beds, surrounded by their loved ones. It’s no coincidence the word hospice is a derivative of “hospitality” — making people feel comfortable in their own homes.

This core group, which included the Rev. Gerald Roseberry and nurses Mary Audrey Mellow and Blanche Hopkins, began changing how that final journey would look and feel. In 1977, they formed not-for-profit Valley of the Sun Hospice — later changed to Hospice of the Valley — and began carrying out a mission of “comfort and dignity.” They cared for patients’ physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs; visiting the terminally ill at home to manage their pain and offer peace and comfort.

They also provided support to family members as they struggled to cope with impending loss.

Until Medicare created a hospice benefit in 1982, the care given during those initial five years was seldom reimbursed. The early “friends of hospice” raised money to cover costs, because the goal was to always provide the care, regardless of ability to pay.

That philosophy still exists today. In 42 years, Hospice of the Valley has never turned anyone away for lack of insurance or financial means.

“It’s still in our DNA to care for all who come to us, and not worry about whether there’s coverage,” Executive Director Debbie Shumway says. “It’s never been a question for us. Last year, our charity care totaled about $10.5 million in community services and programs.”

Expectant couples who are told their baby will not survive long after birth are supported at no cost with a compassionate perinatal program that starts with pregnancy, continues after the death of their child and into a subsequent pregnancy.

Patients are soothed with music therapy and cheered by pet teams who visit at the bedside to chase away loneliness.

HOV also assists people confused about the array of options when it comes time to find supervised living arrangements for parents who can no longer manage on their own. This senior placement service is completely free, unlike other placement agencies that work on commission.

Hospice of the Valley also provides free Living Will and Medical Power of Attorney forms to help you complete your Advance Directives well before there is a medical emergency. Putting your wishes in writing gives everyone peace of mind.

What began as an agency devoted to caring for a handful of patients has grown immensely — HOV was privileged to care for more than 18,000 patients and their families last year.

ne of our favorite places to visit this time of year is Arizona’s original State Capital, Prescott. Only about 90 minutes north of Phoenix, Prescott has a cooler climate in the summer and plenty of small-town adventure for the whole family. The Prescott National Forest surrounds this historic western town, with beautiful forestland and gorgeous mountain views, perfect for hiking, camping and fishing. Prescott is a great place to visit for a day trip, or a weekend road trip. Here are some of our favorite spots to see when we visit the home of the World’s Oldest Rodeo.

WHISKEY ROW AND COURTHOUSE PLAZA One of the most well-known, and somewhat notorious, places to see in Prescott is the heart of downtown known as Whiskey Row. Once home to as many as 40 saloons on one block, Whiskey Row embodies the wild west history of Prescott and is a fun place to find everything from art galleries, boutiques and shops, to ice cream parlors and restaurants.

You can visit the oldest frontier saloon in Arizona, The Palace, which once hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, and Doc Holliday. Then walk across the street to the historic

SHARLOT HALL MUSEUM The Sharlot Hall Museum is a fascinating place to visit, and just a short walk from the Courthouse Plaza and Whiskey Row. The museum lets visitors walk through a historic collection of buildings and displays that represent the history and heritage of Arizona during Territorial times.

This educational and cultural center was named after its founder, Sharlot Mabridth Hall, who was a wellknown poet, activist, and politician, as well as Arizona’s first territorial historian. In the early 19th century, Sharlot Hall began to collect both Native American and pioneer artifacts to create a historical museum to preserve the heritage and culture of Arizona.

HASSAYAMPA INN The Hassayampa Inn is a beautiful, historic hotel in downtown Prescott, and a favorite place for visitors to stay. Opened in 1927, the Hassayampa Inn was one of the first large hotels in town and preserves its heritage with an ornately decorated lobby, bar and restaurant. The old-fashioned elevator is original and must be operated by hotel staff. It also happens to

be the location of quite a few different reported ghost sightings and one of Prescott’s most notorious hauntings.

If you are in the mood for a slice of history and a good ghost story, the Hassayampa Inn is worth a weekend visit.

camping, hiking and boating. The trail is perfect for short hikes with kids, a two-mile trail that leads all the way around the lake and is wheelchair and stroller accessible on one side. There are also picnic tables and grills, as well as boat rentals in the summer.

HERITAGE PARK ZOO The Heritage Park Zoological Society is located on about ten acres just north of Prescott, overlooking Willow Lake.

This is a great zoo to visit with kids and it lives up to its motto of “Conservation through Education.” As well as offering sanctuary to many endangered species like the Mexican Gray Wolf, a tiger, tarantulas, and various reptiles, it also hosts animals rescued

by Arizona Game and Fish, such as a gray fox, mountain lion, and black bear. It provides visitors with a fantastic children’s playground, covered picnic pavilion, and interactive animal experiences.

WATSON LAKE Another one of our favorite outdoor spots in Prescott is Watson Lake, located just a few miles from downtown Prescott. This beautiful lake is surrounded by large granite boulders, which makes it great for hiking, fishing and boating. Watson Lake has picnic tables, campgrounds, and playground areas for kids, and hosts many local events and group activities. The hiking trail is longer and more challenging than Lynx Lake, but the path through the rocky terrain showcases it’s best feature, the stunning lakeside views from every angle.

LYNX LAKE We love to visit Prescott in the summer months, because it has perfect hiking weather! One of our favorite spots to hike is the lovely Lynx Lake, located just 15 minutes Southeast of Prescott. Very close and easy to reach through the Prescott National Forest, this lake is a great place for fishing,

ack to school already? The summer seemed to fly by and it’s once again time for kids to start back to school. With summer heat and monsoon season in full effect, every bit of advice to make life a little less hectic and eliminate the drama is welcome. We collected some great tips from teachers, parents, doctors, and other education and child experts to find some of the most practical and useful tips for making sure your child is on track and ready to go for the upcoming school year.

GET BACK INTO A ROUTINE One of the most important things you can do to get your kids on the right track for school is to set a routine and schedule for the school year.

This is the time to reset sleeping patterns, establish a wake up time, and set the guidelines for meals, chores, homework and activities. Make sure that you, your significant other, and your kids are on the same page with the schedule to make it easier for the whole family. Some of the items to build into your routine include: • Bed time and sleep schedule • Wake up time • Breakfast and dinner • Homework schedule • Extra activities Getting enough sleep is one of the most critical factors in making sure that a child does well in school. Children who do not get enough sleep have a hard time concentrating and learning to their full potential. Insufficient sleep is also associated with lower academic achievement for older kids, in addition to higher rates of absenteeism and tardiness.

Experts agree that having a consistent bedtime routine and wake up time for your child is one of the best ways to make sure they get the right amount of sleep. They suggest starting to reset sleeping patterns about seven to 10 days before the first day of school. Make sure your kids get into a routine of going to bed and waking up with plenty of rest every day, so you can avoid this being a factor during the first week of school.

ESTABLISH HEALTHY EATING HABITS Another critically important factor in ensuring your kids are at their best during school is making sure that they eat right, especially at breakfast. Studies show that kids who eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast have better concentration and more energy for school. Make sure their breakfast contains some protein and enough calories to get them through to lunchtime. Plan ahead to make sure you either sign you child up for the hot lunch program, or have healthy choices available to include when packing lunch, so your kiddo doesn’t get hungry before the end of the day.

And don’t forget the after-school snack! My kid is always so hungry when I pick her up from school that she inhales any snack I give her.

Give your kid some healthy, but filling, options to keep them going all day long and give them the energy for homework and any activities they have after school is out.

SET THE STAGE FOR HOMEWORK AND STUDY So how do you bring it all together to help your student be a better learner? Experts recommend

setting academic goals as a first step. Work with your kid to help them think about their goals and grades, and how they plan to reach those goals, before they head into the school year. Help them plan ahead and establish good study habits, and let them know it’s okay to ask for help if they stumble over a subject during the school year.

Work with their teacher to help them understand any challenges or problems your child may have, and keep in touch throughout the school year to make sure you keep up with how they are doing in the classroom and whether you have concerns about assignments.

It’s also important to set aside a distraction-free space that can be used for doing homework.

Whether it’s in their bedroom or another quiet room in the house, make sure they have room to study with no TV, devices, or other attentiongrabbing distractions. Be sure to schedule time for homework into your child’s daily routine, and make the timeframe consistent.

Going back to school is a hectic time for kids and parents. You can take charge of the school year by planning ahead and setting the stage to make sure your child has the basic essentials available for being a successful student. Set the foundation with a regular routine, enough sleep, healthy food, good prioritization, and a quiet space to study – you kid will handle the rest in the classroom!

PVSCHOOLS EXPANDS EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING PROGRAMS

VSchools recently expanded its early childhood learning programs with the opening of the Little Cubs at the James P. Lee Early Childhood Learning Center, which is located at 3820 E. Nisbet Rd., Phoenix 85032.

“Little Cubs will provide our employees and working families in the community an option for childcare in the southern area of the district. This is the beginning of their experience with PVSchools,” said Jennifer Kelly, childcare coordinator with the Community Education Department.

The center is fully licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services. The program is open from 6:30 a.m-5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and follows the school calendar. Classroom ratios for staff and children are as follows: • Infants 1:5 or 2:11 • One-year-old 1:6 or 2:13 • Two-year-old 2:8 • Three-year-old 1:13 One feature that stands out from other childcare programs is that the Little Cubs also has an onsite

registered nurse. Parents will have peace of mind knowing that a trained medical professional is onsite should a situation arise.

A SNAPSHOT OF THE PROGRAM Children attending the Little Cubs program participate in art, music, dramatic play, storytime, songs, and dance. “Children are naturally curious. We play with them, introduce toys or activities that are right for their age,” said Barbara Bush, a childcare associate at Pinnacle High School.

INFANTS AND TODDLERS PROGRAM Our Infants and Toddlers Program incorporates individual play using developmentally appropriate toys good for both large and small muscles, socialization with children in the classroom, storybooks, art activities, music, and movement. Caregivers also work on toilet training in the Toddler 2 classroom.

Children are diapered and fed on a fixed schedule.

3-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM A typical day will include large and small group activities that are developmentally appropriate for 3-year-olds. These will include activities in literature, early math, art, and music, as well as social

studies and science. Children will also have the opportunity to choose free choice dramatic play, use large muscles on the playground, develop social skills, and make friends.

Daily reports are provided to all parents. These reports include when diapers are changed, nap times, activities completed, food eaten, and eating time.

TAKING MUSICAL EDUCATION TO ROCK STAR STATUS IN A FUN, SAFE ENVIRONMENT

ach to Rock in North Scottsdale, owned by music lover Wes Gross and his wife June, is Arizona’s only location of this nationwide franchise that aims to bring a new approach to music education to students of all ages. The focus here is about making music fun — and teaching kids a valuable skill that can last a lifetime.

According to Teresa Neilson, marketing and special events coordinator for Bach to Rock North Scottsdale, Wes is a longtime music lover who rocked out with garage bands in the 1960s and 1970s. When he heard about the Bach to Rock (B2R) concept, he knew he wanted to bring that approach to musical education to his home state of

Arizona. In January 2017, he made that happen, opening the first Bach to Rock in the state — with future plans to open others around the valley.

This first Arizona studio was chosen for its prime location. “We are super convenient for the many families that live in and around McDowell Mountain Ranch, DC Ranch, Desert Ridge, North Scottsdale and Cave Creek,” Teresa says of their spot in The Promenade shopping district on the corner of Frank Lloyd Boulevard and Scottsdale Road. “There is a Trader Joe’s, a Nordstrom Rack and much more so parents can do errands while the kids are in class, and there is always plenty of parking,” she notes of this locale.

The Bach to Rock method aims to make learning to play an instrument fun and to help motivate students to learn and appreciate music education by playing music they enjoy. Within the first few months of instruction, students will have the opportunity to work with other students in a real band scenario and play the popular songs that resonate with their generation. According to Teresa, the Bach to Rock company purchased rights to the arrangements of many of today’s popular songs so kids can literally learn to play to songs they are hearing on the radio — making music more relatable and approachable.

She notes that this also helps enforce good practice habits because when they are learning a song they like to hear, they will be motivated to practice more. In addition to the method, the studio itself is an inviting environment conducive to musical exploration.

“We believe that if students are playing music they recognize and enjoy, they will be more motivated to practice and to want to play more often,” says Teresa, who describes herself as “the ultimate band mom” and whose own children participated in band throughout school.

Unlike a typical music store, which may have a small room dedicated to lessons, Bach to Rock is designed to accommodate a variety of different types of classes specifically for all ages of children.

“It’s very clean with bright colors and bright lights and all our lesson rooms have glass panels so parents can see and hear everything that’s going on during a lesson,” says Teresa. This provides an added element of safety, and she notes that the company is very focused on working with parents as a team to support the musical education efforts of the students.

“We are very family- and kid-friendly here,” she adds. “We understand that families are busy and kids get sick so we try to make scheduling makeup lessons very easy for parents and we work with them to help the children get the maximum benefit from their lessons.”

Bach to Rock offers a variety of lessons, both individual and group. While the company focus is

on piano, guitar, drums and vocals — the four main components of a rock band — there are lessons for practically every musical interest including Rock Band, Glee Club, Rock n’ Roll, Rock City, Kids n Keys, and Beat Refinery, which is designed to teach all facets of being a DJ, as well as B2R Studios and Recording Arts. Vocals and individual instrument courses including Piano 101, Guitar 101, Drums 101 and Ukulele 101 are also offered.

Many of these classes (including Rock n’ Roll, Rock City, and Kids n Keys) are early childhood lessons for students ages three through six that align with pre-K through K2 curriculum, during which students are learning to read, which falls in line with helping them learn to read music. Each of these courses combine developmental music benefits and movement-based activities with age-appropriate themes and musical selections.

Movement serves as an important element to keep littler ones engaged, and as the age for lessons increases, students are encouraged to work in a group environment. For example, the Kids n Keys program introduces the fundamentals of music and piano playing to children ages five to seven in a group setting. The curriculum includes activities and games involving listening, movement, singing and creative-music making.

“There are so many different ways to present music and make it fun for kids — that’s really what we’re trying to do here,” Teresa says. “So, while they are learning finger positioning or concepts like rhythm and harmony, they are also building on music theory skills that will last a lifetime and building selfconfidence too.”

Teresa notes that music serves as a positive outlet for children of all ages and that studies show music is attributed to students having better grades, better attendance and higher test scores. “Music education has so many benefits — it reinforces skills such as reading, recognizing patterns, listening, counting and even organization,” she adds.

Always eager to help the community in which it resides, Bach to Rock North Scottsdale is extremely supportive of the music programs at nearby schools and works with neighboring PTA and PTO groups. The studio also offers free DJ services for elementary school events such as carnivals. She notes that the community has also been extremely supportive of Bach to Rock — when the studio hosted its first performance showcase this past June, 40 children participated and it was standing room only with an “overflowing” audience. B2R North Scottsdale plans to host two showcases a

year, shining the spotlight on their students for the community to enjoy and to give students another opportunity to practice their performance skills.

In addition to lessons, B2R offers week-long, single and half day camps during summer, spring and winter breaks with programs including Rock Band, Rock City World Tour, Recording Arts, Glee Club and more, with an extended care option available.

The studio also hosts birthday parties and corporate events, during which groups can jam out and become rock stars for a day.

Rather than telling people about all that Bach to Rock has to offer, those that are interested in the concept are welcome to come in and see for themselves. “Anyone can call and arrange a trial lesson, meet with a teacher and learn more about our concept,” she says. Bach to Rock teaches students of all ages, not just children. ost people don’t realize this, but Scottsdale Police Dispatchers receive all sorts of calls from citizens wondering what to do regarding wild animals, injured animals, animal cruelty and more.

Here’s what to do when you encounter these different creatures…

WILD ANIMALS: Coyotes, javelina, bobcats and more all are native to the Arizona desert. Sightings of these animals are actually quite frequent. Our best advice is to LEAVE THEM ALONE. You’ll see them crossing streets, walking through parking lots and of course, hiking our trails and parks. Unless the animal is actively attacking, officers will not respond.

SNAKES: If you find a snake in your house or garage, the Scottsdale Fire Department will remove them for you. Call the Fire Department’s non-emergency line at 480312-8911. How about in your yard? There are volunteer organizations that can relocate them

for you. The Four Stages of Transition (part 1)

Recognizing this first stage of transition can help provide clarity around our own periods of transition and perhaps increase compassion for those around us experiencing life changes.

The Rooster is known by visitors and locals alike to be your upscale local dive bar. Tucked in the corner of the plaza behind retail and other restaurants, it’s easy to miss from Scottsdale road. But don’t let its hidden location hold you back, it is worth tracking down.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is the décor. Wherever your eye falls there is something interesting to see. From full size motorcycles, to clock toting bucks, to the “Cock of the Month”, there is nothing dull about this place. When you walk in, you will be greeted by a friendly bartender and given your choice of prime seating. The staff is well versed in their menu knowledge and more than helpful in suggestions. With choices including comfort foods such as mac n’ cheese, fresh buffalo chips, salads, meatballs and wings, keeping your mouth from getting your stomach in trouble will be a test of will.

This month we thought we would highlight a particular menu item. As we were there for lunch, we thought a fan favorite, the Rueben, would be perfect. For those of you on a lunch break, the time from order to table was relatively quick. The Rueben itself looked as appetizing

as it sounded on the menu; a mouthwatering combination of thinly sliced corned beef, Gruyere cheese, house-made sauerkraut and 1000 Island dressing on grilled Jewish rye bread. That was the description on the menu…here’s how it looked on the plate: The perfect amount of ruby red corned beef, gooey cheese, amazing smelling sauerkraut and a thin spread of 1000 Island dressing all piled high on two perfectly prepared pieces of rye bread. The taste? Incredible! From the first bite to the last, we were hooked. In all honestly, we can say this will now be one of our favorite sandwiches. For those of you watching your waistline, an accompaniment of a side salad is a great choice. All in all, the perfect amount of food without being overly full.

For lunch or dinner, or just a drink with friends, The Rooster Tavern Kitchen has a fun, friendly atmosphere with a menu full of so many things to try that you will be coming back for unique experience for years. eople often ask me how much money or what the threshold net worth is before they need a Revocable Living Trust. There is no magic number. The factors that go into the decision include family situation, types of assets, location of real property, and, yes, net worth. The next question I’m asked is, why have a Trust?

THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST GIVES INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU ARE INCAPACITATED Both a Will and a Trust contain instructions for distributing your assets after you die. However, a Trust also contains your instructions for managing your assets if you become incapacitated. The Trust allows a successor you have chosen to step into your shoes to pay your bills, manage your assets, sell property if needed, and generally handle your financial affairs. The Trust makes it easy for someone to step in to assist when you need help.

WITHOUT THE TRUST WE FILE FOR CONSERVATORSHIP Without a Trust, control over your finances may require a court proceeding known as a conservatorship. One attor-

ney I know who does these proceedings called conservatorships “cumbersome.”

They are also quite costly…far more than the cost of creating a Trust.

Money isn’t the only cost of conservatorship. Your family is asking the court to declare you incompetent. This takes a huge emotional toll on everyone. It takes time too, both to have the proceeding, and to make accountings to the court according to its rigorous guidelines.

Last, the conservatorship is a very public affair. There are no locked doors in the courthouse on these. With the Trust, we maintain our privacy. We state in the Trust how and when it should be decided that we can no longer handle our affairs.

THE BOTTOM LINE It is important to be sure someone can manage your affairs if you are incapacitated. The Trust is an ideal way to assure a smooth transition if you can no longer manage your affairs.
