COASTAL ITALIAN EATERY ÉLEPHANTE TO OPEN FIRST EXPANSION LOCATION IN SCOTTSDALE
following successful launches in Pasadena, California, and Houston, Texas, with plans to open a further 160 franchise locations by 2024. The eatery, owned by Valley resident Dave Liniger and his familyowned private equity firm, Area 15 Ventures, boasts a diverse menu including the Big Daddy sandwich and Spicy Daddy, alongside a handmade salted miso chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Daddy’s Chicken Shack was founded by celebrity chef Pace Webb and her husband, Chris Georgalas. The couple sought to combine traditional fried chicken with a Southeast Asian twist to create a brand that promotes happiness and high-quality food. VIM is rolling out the exclusive original series, “Scottsdale,” on June 6. This drama, created by screenwriter Anthony Bawn, a former North Scottsdale resident, revolves around an affluent desert family grappling with challenges beyond their control.
The plot centers on insurance tycoon and gubernatorial aspirant Henry Merrick, portrayed by Mark Whitis. Merrick clandestinely conspires with a local priest, Amir, brought to life by Joseph Penner. A character shrouded in mystery, Amir peddles a lethal drug, with a catch – prospective buyers must name him as their life insurance policy’s beneficiary.
Inspired by dramas like “Breaking Bad” and iconic soap operas such as “The Young and the Restless,” Bawn’s “Scottsdale” seeks to mirror the city’s reputedly upscale ambiance. It revolves around the well-known philanthropic Merrick family of Scottsdale, admired for their community involvement but also known for their questionable means of maintaining their status quo.
“Scottsdale” brings the city to life with on-location shoots in North Scottsdale and Chandler, and additional filming at Arizona Studios in Phoenix. For more information, visit watchvim.com.

Scottsdale Joins the Organization of World Heritage Cities City News
By Jessica Lema
Photo courtesy of city of Scottsdale
THE ORGANIZATION OF WORLD HERITAGE CITIES RECENTLY GRANTED THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE MEMBERSHIP AMONG AN ELITE GROUP OF MORE THAN 200 CITIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD THAT ARE HOME TO UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES.
With this acceptance, the organization recognizes Scottsdale as the location of Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert home and laboratory, Taliesin West, and welcomes the city as an active participant in international efforts to protect and preserve the heritage of mankind.
“Scottsdale is proud to join the Organization of World Heritage Cities in solidarity with communities from around the world,” says Mayor David D. Ortega. “Taliesin West, truly exemplifies where exceptional design intersects with our Sonoran Desert environment, here in Scottsdale.”
Established in 1937, Wright’s winter home in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains was forged from the natural elements of the desert, with most of the labor done by the architect and his apprentices, making it one of his most personal works and a premier example of organic architecture.
It stands today as one of the regions most beloved attractions, with sprawling views of the Valley of the Sun, open to the public with tours and special events throughout the year.
Taliesin West was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, alongside seven other Frank Lloyd Wright sites, in 2019. The list recognizes natural and cultural sites that demonstrate significance and influence on a global scale.
“Frank Lloyd Wright’s work was added to the World Heritage List because it changed the way people design, build, and live throughout the world,” says Stuart Graff, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.
“Those of us who live and work in Scottsdale, and the visitors who come here, also know how his work shaped our community. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is pleased that the city now benefits as a World Heritage City because of Wright’s work at Taliesin West.”
The site has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1982 and was added to the Scottsdale Historic Register in 2006.
“Long ago, Frank Lloyd Wright saw the beauty and potential of Scottsdale’s Sonoran Desert, and his influence on the city remains clear to this day. Taliesin West draws travelers from around the world to Scottsdale, and this recognition will further elevate Scottsdale’s status as a renowned destination where art, architecture and design are not only experienced, but created and celebrated,” says Experience Scottsdale President and CEO Rachel Sacco.
Mayor Ortega will serve as the city’s communication liaison with the OWHC, with the help of Tourism and Events Director Karen Churchard.

Education High School Students Immerse Themselves in the World of Emergency Department Medicine
The HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center opened its doors to 40 enthusiastic high school students as they embarked on an engaging and educational journey into the realm of emergency department medicine. The event, organized by the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Explorers Club, provided these young minds with a hands-on experience alongside healthcare professionals, offering invaluable insights into the dynamic field of emergency medicine.
The event was held in May at HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center, 7400 E. Thompson Peak Pkwy.
The primary goal of this educational opportunity was to allow students to witness firsthand the intricate processes involved in a patient’s journey through the emergency department. To provide an immersive experience, the students interacted with personnel from the Scottsdale Fire Department, who showcased their firetruck, as well as the Thompson Peak Emergency Department clinical staff. Additionally, a Native Air ambulance (medical helicopter) was present,
allowing students to gain insights into the role of air transportation in emergency medical situations.
The HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Explorers Club consists of high school-aged members with a deep interest in emergency medicine. Through this event, they were able to explore various career paths within this field, fostering a better understanding of the opportunities available to them.
The HonorHealth Medical Explorers Club is a studentrun organization sponsored by HonorHealth. It was first established in 2015 at the HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center and has since seen 40 to 50 students engage in the club each year. Similar clubs have been established at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center and HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center. Furthermore, a new club focusing on nursing will be launched in the upcoming fall semester.
Since its inception, over 600 students have participated in the Medical Explorers Club, which runs from August to June during the academic year. The program exposes students interested in healthcare careers to a range of
hands-on events and learning opportunities. In addition to the emergency medicine event, this year’s activities included dissection sessions with cardiologists, casting exercises with orthopedic surgeons, discussions on mental health led by psychologists, dissection of cow eyes with ophthalmologists, behind-the-scenes tours of operating rooms, blood pressure measurement activities with ICU nursing staff, and exercises with physical therapists and occupational therapists.

AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan Helps Bring Dreams to Life with Creative Photo Contest
AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan and the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office are inviting kindergarten through 12th grade students
across the state to take a creative photo of their future dream job for the “My PicturePerfect Career” photo contest.
Summer vacation is an ideal time for families to talk with children about what they’d like to be when they grow up and explore potential career interests with trips to Arizona libraries, museums, and other local hands-on learning resources. Taking and sharing pictures while discussing job aspirations is the goal of this summer’s “My Picture-Perfect Career” Photo Contest, which is open to students through 12th grade across Arizona.
Students are encouraged to take or pose for a photo representing themselves in their dream job. They can take a selfie, pose for a picture, invite friends and family into the shot or come up with their own creative ideas. The final photo just needs to visually communicate their vision of a dream job – whether the participant is
in front of or behind the camera! A total of 10 winners will be selected across the state and receive $529 towards opening a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from across Arizona’s 15 counties.
The goal of the photo contest is to increase awareness of the AZ529 Plan and pave a path for another generation of students to achieve their post-secondary dreams through proper savings. Winners will be honored by Treasurer Kimberly Yee during a special ceremony at the state capitol in September. Be advised that by submitting photos to this contest, you acknowledge and agree that the photo may be publicly displayed.
In total, $5,290 will be distributed to 10 students to assist in saving for their educational plans beyond high school. Parents or guardians of the winners will be responsible for setting up an AZ529 ac-
count if an account does not already exist. All entries must be submitted by Sunday, July 9, at 11:59 p.m.
The AZ529 Education Savings Plan offers a tax-free approach to setting money aside for college, community college, vocational training, trade school, and other educational avenues for high school graduates. Arizona residents can receive a dollar-fordollar state tax deduction for contributions made to an AZ529 account each year, of up to $2,000 per beneficiary or $4,000 per beneficiary depending on filing status. Funds earned over time will remain tax-free when used for a wide variety of covered educational expenses. Additionally, friends and family members may add to a child’s AZ529 Plan at any time and earn the same tax benefits for themselves.
For more information about AZ529, visit az529.gov. For complete contest details and rules, visit az529.gov/photocontest.

Want a reason to play with your food? While adults may discourage us from doing so, food items can teach us a lot about science, especially chemistry. And it can be fun too! In this activity, you’ll learn about how vinegar and baking soda create a reaction and form carbon dioxide bubbles. When a raisin joins the (dance) party, the bubbles that are formed stick to the raisins and their many wrinkles, causing them to float to the top. When the raisins reach the top, bubbles tend to pop and release the gas which, in turn, allows the raisins to sink back down to the bottom.
Supplies
• 1 clear plastic cup
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 6 to 7 raisins
• Water
• Vinegar Challenge
• Fill you cup about halfway with water
• Add one teaspoon of baking soda and stir until dissolved in water
• Add 6 to 7 raisins into the cup
• Very slowly pour in vinegar until cup is three-fourths full
• Watch the raisins dance
What did you think would happen to the raisins? Did they surprise you? What happened? What do you think is causing the bubble to form? What type of gas is it? You can try this experiment with other small fruits–how do you think the reaction would
be different if you used grapes? Or a blueberry. What about a cherry tomato?
There are lots of different ways to learn about science in your very own home. Science is all around us, and as long as you ask and have supervision, it is great to be curious about what other experiments you can conduct. Visit azscience.org and find experiments just like this!

Hello Neighbor! Neighbors
HI, MY NAME IS… Andy Price and I lead the Grand Canyon Council as it delivers programs of Boy Scouts of America throughout much of the state of Arizona.
I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR MORE THAN FOUR YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… there is no greater place for hiking and golf! The combination of so much public land, great golf, great roads, and weather make Scottsdale paradise for anyone who enjoys being outside.
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… working with a large team of community leaders, Scouting volunteers, and employees to support young people through Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Exploring programs of Grand Canyon Council.
MY FAMILY IS… very important to me, and I work hard every day to support them.
ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… time spent outdoors, whether I’m hiking, fly fishing, or golfing. I’m happiest outdoors.
MY TWO FAVORITE MOVIES I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY ARE… “Fargo” and “Star Wars.” Very different, I know! But “Star Wars” was the universe of my childhood – who didn’t love Luke and Leia? And “Fargo” is quirky and so much fun!
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an attorney, but I figured out being a Boy Scout leader is WAY more fun! I get paid to work with superb people who care about kids, and I even get paid to spend time at camp.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “Wayne’s World” for the win!
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… probably my wife cracking a joke at my expense.
THE PERFECT DAY… starts with a great cup of coffee and trip to the gym, followed by time outdoors with family and friends.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… the Boy Scouts! Seriously, so much of my world revolves around scouting. Second, I would add Trout Unlimited. The work TU does on behalf of clean waterways supports outdoor recreation, healthy environments, and a cleaner world.
MY LIFE IS… awfully busy, but in a good way. Every night I flop into bed ready for rest.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… the time I got to spend with grandparents when I was a kid learning about what their lives were like during the Great Depression and serving in World War II.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… split between a week in Maui and a week at St. Andrews on the Old Course.
THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… when you make a decision, consider the impact of that decision, but also consider the impact beyond that – the ‘second level impact.’

Real Estate The Busy Selling Season is Here
By Joseph Callaway
Many people ask what I do in the summer. It’s like they think we just roll up the sidewalks when the thermometer hits 110 degrees. Nothing could be further from the truth. Actually, June, July, and August are our busiest time of the year. We went back 10 years ago on MLS and found that 27% of our homes sell in the three summer months.
When I tell people that, they scratch their heads and ask, “Why is that?”
Summer is when families want to move. They wait until the school year ends in May and then they want to be in the new schools by the end of August. This doesn’t just apply to Arizona families. We get folks from colder climates who can’t
get their homes sold in the winter. Who wants to deal with lockboxes when the snow is up to the windowsill? So, they wait for school to be out, then rush like crazy to be done by September.
What this means to you is opportunity, opportunity, opportunity. Sell ‘em while they’re hot – no pun intended. Now is the time to find out what your home would sell for in today’s market and, if you have kids in school, you need to take action now. It’s bad enough dropping your third grader off late for school. You really don’t want to deal with changing schools during the school year.

Cover Story Going solar?
Here's what you need to know.
By Shay Moser
Solar panels are a lot less expensive than they were a decade ago. But they’re still an investment and determining whether you can install a system can be daunting — something Val Berechet learned firsthand.
His journey with solar started in 2014 when he invested in a system for his home that wasn't correctly installed. While permits and inspections were delayed over eight months, he learned the ins and outs of solar installation, let go of the company installing his system, and reinstalled it himself. In 2015, Berechet put his frustrating experience into co-founding Sunsolar Solutions and has since helped more than 10,000 homeowners go solar by providing education, honest quotes, reputable installations, and transparency.
Berechet says people tend to hold a few common misconceptions about solar panels, which prevent them from making sound financial decisions.
"We help homeowners understand how solar panels work, choose a system that meets their needs, and know what to expect," says Berechet, president and CEO of Sunsolar Solutions. "Unfortunately, many companies set the wrong expectations or
sell smaller, cheaper systems while telling the homeowner it will perform like a larger system. This gives our industry a black eye."
As chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee for the AriSEIA, the Arizona chapter of the national Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Berechet helps educate the public and key decision-makers about solar, storage technologies, electrification, and energy efficiency. The nonprofit 501(c)(6) trade organization also focuses on promoting professionalism within the industry and helping create and protect public policies that support the sector and its customers.
“A lot of new companies that come from out of state are not educated about the market, such as how SRP and APS utility companies work with solar,” says Berechet. “It's more complex here than it is in other states. There will be bad apples in every industry, but I don't think that's the issue. A lot of it is misinformation and miseducation on the sales side.”
Berechet says homeowners can also help by asking the right questions, such as “How will my utility bill be impacted after I go solar?” He stresses that technology and resources to accurately estimate the effects of solar are available today, and homeowners
should not accept vague answers when looking into solar.
Also, many solar companies don’t install the solar panels they sell, continues Berechet. Sunsolar Solutions sells and installs, providing multiple design options and sharing the total cost upfront so customers can pick the best system for their budget.
“Because we are local and hands-on, we walk the customer through the entire process and handle every aspect of installation,” Berechet says. “Our customers know what to expect because we ensure our sales reps are properly educated and explain it well.”
Some of the frequent expectations Sunsolar Solutions customers have, says Berechet, include grid reliance, energy output, roof impact, weather and climate requirements, the lifespan of solar panels, and the return on investment.
While the answers can be complicated, Sunsolar Solutions helps customers understand everything from the get-go — from how many solar panels are needed to meet energy usage to factors about the roof, such as age and tree cover.
“One of the important things in our process is to
16 • June/July 2023 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD myhyperlocalnews.com
get the correct information from the homeowner,” Berechet explains. “We need to see customers’ electric bills or at least get the last 12 months of electric usage because solar systems are built around how much power a house uses.”
Once Sunsolar Solutions understands a customer’s home’s energy usage, it puts together a detailed quote, including incentives.
Berechet says there are federal and state tax incentives to offset the upfront costs, which Sunsolar Solutions’ energy consultants ensure customers don’t miss if they qualify. For instance, the Federal Solar Tax Credit allows eligible homeowners to reduce the taxes they owe by up to 30% of their solar panel installation cost from their federal income taxes. If the homeowner already paid their taxes through their employer’s W2 withholding, they’ll receive a check back from the IRS. Consider state incentives, too, like in the Valley, which provides a 25% tax credit, up to $1,000, for purchased systems.
After Sunsolar Solutions does a site survey, it puts together an engineering plan, gets permits from the city or county, and seeks approval from the utility company. Then it’s time for the system to be installed.
“We're big on installing things the right way, using the right equipment and installation methods,” Berechet says. “We even have an internal quality control specialist that checks the system post-install.”
If Sunsolar Systems’ quality control specialist approves the installation, the city is called to do its inspection. If everything looks good, Berechet says they file a few remaining documents with the utility company, and then, after that, the system gets turned on.
“It depends where you live; if you live in a city where the permitting process is quicker, installation can be completed within a matter of weeks, and the entire process is done within two months,” Berechet says.
Throughout the entire project, Sunsolar Solutions customers have a dedicated project specialist as their point of contact who answers questions and keeps them updated about the timeline.
Valley residents looking into solar can soon make the Consumer Protection Committee of the AriSEIA their point of contact. One of its significant initiatives, says Berechet, is ensuring consumers are educated so they can protect themselves by asking the right questions about it. Also, the committee is assembling a preferred installer program with local utility companies, much like the one SRP offers, which Sunsolar Solutions is a part of.
“If a solar customer doesn't have a good experience, they often call the utility company and complain about it,” explains Berechet. “So, our interests are aligned, and we need to make sure homeowners understand solar and have the right expectations.”
If you’re ready to start with solar, call Sunsolar Solutions for a free quote at 602-848-9574.

The Life Estate in Estate Planning
By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
Often, a client asks me if we can give a life estate in a home to a beneficiary. The client wants to allow a loved one to occupy the home they are living in, even after the client passes away. The intent is to provide a home for their loved one without giving them complete ownership of the home.
A life estate is what it says: ownership of a property for the entire life of the beneficiary, even if they no longer can or want to live in the home. The life estate may not be what the client really wants. An alternative we offer is the right to occupy the home while the home is held in an Occupancy Trust.
The Occupancy Trust allows the client to tailor the terms according to their wishes. The Trust contains the terms that govern the loved one’s right to occupy the house. It might provide that the occupant must pay for all maintenance, utilities, taxes, insurance, and other expenses of the home while the occupant lives there, or the trust may include money for payment of all those expenses.
The Occupancy Trust can provide for how long the occupant may stay in the home. It can include a fixed length of time or allow the occupant to stay until they pass or can no longer live in the home. A right of occupancy is similar to a life estate, but the occupant cannot sell or transfer their interest in the property
like a life estate beneficiary can, and the rights of the beneficiary can before their death.
HERE ARE TWO EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS USING THE OCCUPANCY TRUST FOR PLANNING:
John has a home in Phoenix, where his special needs brother Andy lives with him. John wants to provide a place for Andy for as long as Andy is able to live independently. John’s revocable trust states that on his passing, the house and a certain sum of money will be held in an Occupancy Trust for Andy. Upon Andy’s passing, or when he is no longer able to live there, the home is to be sold and the proceeds distributed to John’s two children.
Joan owns a home where she lives with her second husband. Joan wants her husband to have time to decide his next steps if she passes first. Her trust provides for an occupancy trust for her current husband, allowing him two years to live there. Upon her husband vacating the property it will be sold, and the proceeds distributed to named beneficiaries.
The Occupancy Trust can provide great flexibility for you if you are concerned about providing for a spouse or other loved one who is living with you. If you have a situation that might merit this planning, we can work through the terms of a plan that will fit you and your loved one perfectly. Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing Offer Resources, Support for Seniors with Hearing Loss
By Sherri Collins
Most of us know someone who has hearing loss. Some of you may be experiencing hearing loss yourself. Oftentimes people dismiss signs of hearing loss as “no big deal.” In reality, hearing loss is a very big deal. Hearing loss can impact all the areas of your life, including relationships, health, and safety. It can also be linked to depression and memory loss, an early indicator of dementia.
While the likelihood of developing dementia exists, there are ways to prevent hearing loss:
• Protect your ears. Keep music or TV volumes low, especially when you are wearing headphones. If you have headphones on and someone else can hear your music, the volume is too high.
• Don’t ignore your hearing loss. If you are experiencing any symptoms of hearing loss, see a hearing healthcare professional right away to start combating the symptoms.
• Tackle the hearing loss head on. Don’t assume hearing loss will go away on its own. It won’t. The sooner you get assistance with your hearing loss, the more likely you are to possibly prevent early dementia.
• Utilize technology. If you have a hearing aid, wear it as much as possible. You can also consider other hearing interventions including cochlear implants, assistive listening devices, amplified telephones, or captioning.
ACCESS TO RESOURCES
As you begin to age, access to valuable resources is critically important. However,
Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
Is doing everyday things from standing up straight to nding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking di cult because of sciatica pain?
an Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) survey found that older adults report that they are concerned with where to find these resources. Survey respondents indicated that they need information on general health and wellness as well as information on memory loss and dementia, pharmacy benefits, and access to mental health services. Other important resources mentioned included assistance with maintaining their independence, access to caregivers fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and access to attorneys and estate planners.
As such, ACDHH is launching its Age of Access initiative designed to be a one-stop destination for resources, information, and programming for Arizona’s older adults who are deaf or experiencing hearing loss. An online survey is in the field right now to gain additional information regarding the needs of the community and how best to provide access to these resources. Take it here: https://bit.ly/acdhhsenior.
Respondents that participated in preliminary research conducted by Gallaudet University indicated that there is a lack of access to home health care aides (caregivers) that can sign or have awareness about deaf people’s needs. Therefore, in the fall of 2023, ACDHH, in partnership with the university, will conduct focus groups on this as well.
Sherri Collins is the executive director for the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing. For more information, visit acdhh.org.
You may nd it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the di culty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. is can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable.
Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by sti joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain.
Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you nd yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery.
One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis.
Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.”
You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. e muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. e simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors.
e core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. ese patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are xed. is pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the sti joints. ese tight muscles and sti joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. erefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve su ered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer an It Should:
1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s di cult to gure out which exercises are right for you. is is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse.
2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back.
3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there.
4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. at didn’t work…
5. You went to the doctor’s o ce, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. ey told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work.
6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique.
Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked
If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. e issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What To Avoid
Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse.
Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to x your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby.
Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved.
Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. is can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back.
Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to nd the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active.
How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term
So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.
Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates
By Tony Beal IN THEATERS
“Evil Dead Rise”
A small family is trapped in their apartment building when a demonic force is unleashed with the ability to possess.
While the “Evil Dead” series may not be a regular topic of conversation among the general public, its deep roots in the horror genre and accessibility for newcomers make it truly special. “Rise” continues this legacy, embracing the more serious tone of the original film and the 2013 iteration, while maintaining the distinctive excess of content and action that sets the series apart. This is a hard-hitting piece that conveys the pain and terror of its characters in a way that will make you cringe. Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan deliver stunning performances as sisters, with Sutherland’s compelling portrayal of a possessed character and Sullivan’s heroic essence reminiscent of Ash and Mia, while also bringing motherhood themes into focus. The film keeps you on the edge of your seat, holding nothing back, which is a major plus. It stands as a worthy addition to one of the greatest horror series of all time.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
The Guardians must face their greatest enemy yet to save one of their own.
James Gunn is a constant reminder of the creative possibilities inherent in the comic book film genre. Despite certain shortcomings, the third installment of his Guardians saga is among his most compelling work to date. Gunn escalates the level of intense action and mature content in a way that complements the overall narrative and tone, while still harmonizing with the previous films. It’s the empathetic core of the story that keeps us invested, as the cast subtly conveys their characters’ growth through nuanced changes in their movements and vocal inflections. Importantly, the film remains clear about its identity and effectively concludes the overarching themes of the trilogy. It’s a truly remarkable piece.
“Hypnotic”
A detective uncovers a supernatural element in the search for his daughter.
“Hypnotic” is a film that, despite having ample talent both on-screen and behind the scenes, struggles to achieve its ultimate, yet confused, objective. Director Robert Rodriguez, known for infusing style and charisma into his low-budget projects, seems to fall short here, with the film’s low-cost aesthetic lacking the charm of his previous works. The cast, including
usually impressive actors like Ben Affleck and Alice Braga, appear disengaged or unenthusiastic about the story, though William Fitchner gives a notably overthe-top performance. The film aims for complexity in its structure but ends up being more incoherent and confusing, and its attempts to draw parallels with filmmaking feel underdeveloped. There’s a glimmer of an intriguing concept in the third act, but it’s undermined by a hurried conclusion. Overall, it’s an unfortunate squandering of potential and talent.
satisfy both hardcore fans and casual viewers, even though the ending may leave some yearning for more.

Dom and his family’s past actions come back to haunt them, with a new foe hellbent on revenge.
By now, fans know what to expect from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and “Fast X” delivers the anticipated thrills, albeit in a somewhat overstuffed package. The consistently strong performers (Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang) maintain their high standards, while others (Ludacris, Gibson) have yet to master their craft, even after two decades. The film’s abrupt shifts between narratives, some of which appear only briefly before a lengthy absence, may disrupt its flow. Nevertheless, the film’s charisma and action sequences help propel it forward. In terms of the latter, Louis Leterrier masterfully orchestrates some of the series’ most audacious stunts, managing to balance fight scenes, varied vehicle chases, and shootouts to prevent repetition during the film’s extensive run time of nearly two and a half hours. The editing truly shines in these moments, producing a solid action film that should
