Phoenix Rescue Mission Launches 10th Code:Red Campaign THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE HERE AND PHOENIX RESCUE MISSION (PRM) IS KICKING OFF ITS 10TH ANNUAL, CITY-WIDE CODE:RED SUMMER HEAT RELIEF CAMPAIGN TO SAVE THE LIVES OF THE CITY’S UNHOUSED AND AT-RISK INDIVIDUALS.
According to Maricopa County, at least 130 individuals experiencing homelessness died from heat-related causes in 2021. The nonprofit’s goal is to protect our most vulnerable population by collecting and distributing one million bottles of water. Through August 31, PRM is providing essential resources to sustain the city’s homeless population, such as nonperishable food and water supplies. PRM is seeking monetary, nonperishable food and water donations. Monetary donations will be matched up to $150,000, made possible by a grant by several supporters of Phoenix Rescue Mission. “During the summer months in Phoenix, asphalt can heat up to a deadly 170 degrees. Anything above 104 degrees can cause brain damage and death,” says Phoenix Rescue Mission CEO Ken Brissa. “While many Valley residents find respite indoors, our unhoused neighbors cannot take shelter from the heat and need help that can come to them.” Several municipalities have created partnerships with
the Mission, bringing relief to the streets in the Mission’s Hope Coach vehicles to distribute water, toiletries, and case management services. “Anything helps in this undertaking to save and change lives, whether it’s through a monetary donation, dropping off a case of water or starting a water drive,” says Brissa. “This is so much more than a handout of water. This is arming people with the tools to change their lives and move out of harm’s way.” More information about the 10th annual Code:Red initiative can be found at phoenixrescuemission. org/codered. Food, water, and all other heat-relief donations can be dropped off at the Mission’s Donation Warehouse, located at 2515 N. 34th Drive in Phoenix. The Mission is also in need of volunteers to help distribute vital, nutritious food to families in need at its Hope for Hunger Food Bank. For more information on what to donate or to start a Code:Red drive, contact gikhelp@phxmission.org or call 602-346-3347.

A PUBLIC HEARING ON SCOTTSDALE’S PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX LEVY WILL OCCUR BEFORE FINAL BUDGET ADOPTION AT 5 P.M. TUESDAY, JUNE 7 AT SCOTTSDALE CITY HALL, LOCATED AT 3939 N. DRINKWATER BOULEVARD. Meetings are broadcast electronically through Cox Cable Channel 11 and streamed online at ScottsdaleAZ.gov (search “live stream”). To find the agenda for this meeting and information about the opportunity for public participation and comment, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “City Council agenda.” All interested residents are welcome to attend in-person or online. The City of Scottsdale will increase its proposed primary property tax levy $931,256 (exclusive of new construction) due to tort liability claim payments and the two percent statutory adjustment. Because property valuations increased, the City of Scottsdale can decrease its primary property tax rate from $0.5039 per $100 of assessed valuation down to $0.4970 in Fiscal Year 2022/23 and still achieve the proposed levy amount. myhyperlocalnews.com
The city’s proposed secondary property tax levy will decrease $5.02 million due to use of accumulated fund balance because of savings achieved through a general obligation debt refinancing. In addition, due to increased property values, the current secondary tax rate of $0.5042 is expected to decrease by $0.0941 to $0.4101 per $100 of assessed valuation in FY 2022/23. In Fiscal Year 2022/23, citizen tax bills will reflect an estimated combined property tax rate of $0.9071, which is $0.1010 less than the Fiscal Year 2021/22 combined rate of $1.0081.
The City Treasurer’s Office at 480-3122427 can answer questions regarding the city property tax levy or other budget issues.
TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING: NOTICE OF TAX INCREASE In compliance with section 42-17107, Arizona Revised Statutes, the City of Scottsdale is notifying its property taxpayers of Scottsdale’s intention to raise its primary property taxes over last year’s level. Scottsdale is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $931,256 or 2.66 percent.
For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Scottsdale’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to be $49.70 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase). Without the proposed tax increase, the total taxes that would be owed on a $100,000 home would have been $48.41. This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction. The increase is also exclusive of any changes that may occur from property tax levies for voter approved bonded indebtedness or budget and tax overrides.
WHERE DO YOUR PROPERTY TAXES GO IN SCOTTSDALE? About nine cents of every dollar in property taxes paid by Scottsdale property owners goes to the city. The remaining 91 cents goes to public schools, Maricopa County, community colleges, and various special taxing districts. Of the nine cents of every dollar paid by Scottsdale property owners, four cents go to support voter approved bond programs. The amount of property tax paid is based on two factors: the tax levy set by the city and the assessed valuation of the property (as determined by the county). City of Scottsdale Saves Record Amount of Water; Continues Encouraging Residents To Do The Same By Valerie Schneider Photo Courtesy of Scottsdale Water AFTER COMMITTING TO A 5% REDUCTION IN WATER USE IN 2022, SCOTTSDALE ANNOUNCES CITY OPERATIONS HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS AND ACHIEVED 8% REDUCTIONS WHEN COMPARING FIRST QUARTER DATA. Residential and commercial use for this same period is down 2.5% - halfway to achieving the voluntary reduction goal.
accomplishes water main and hydrant flushing by recycling water back into the system instead of discharging water into the streets – a feat that can save more than 300,000 gallons of water per day. During the contracted four-day period, more than five miles of pipes were flushed, saving more than one-million gallons of water from being wasted. The data was analyzed based on a three-year average from 2019-2021. This average accounts for an increase in residential use during COVID, a very dry summer in 2020, and a wet monsoon season in 2021. “This is exciting news,” says Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer. “The city has really embraced increasing water conservation on the news of the Colorado River shortage and it’s rewarding to know that efforts are paying off… With summer and peak water demand season, everyone needs to make a conscience effort to conserve this precious resource.”
Since enacting Stage One of Scottsdale’s Drought Management Plan, the city has made considerable efforts to find ways to reduce water savings through Scottsdale-run facilities and processes: • Scottsdale facilities has executed an extensive water audit program that has been utilized on 49 facilities so far this year - prioritizing the largest facilities for maximum water savings. The department has undergone replacing existing fixture upgrades, optimizing cooling tower processes, and performing leak detection audits. • Scottsdale Parks and Recreation has contributed significantly to reaching this goal as part of their commitment to conservation efforts with a goal of 15% less water use than annually allotted. • Scottsdale Water has hired a contract team that
To assist resident and commercial customers in the 5% voluntary reduction goal, Scottsdale Water has many resources available online and in person to help residents and businesses find opportunities to reduce their water use. Several of the programs include leak detection through a new WaterSmart portal, rebates for turf removal and WaterSense fixture installation, and through landscape and irrigation upgrades. In 2022, the city’s Water Conservation team has received an 800% increase in homeowner’s association (HOA) inquiries for assistance; a statistic that shows while the water numbers may not be where the city hopes quite yet, the word is getting out. The conservation team assists these HOAs by internally looking at their water use and finding ways to improve efficiency, particularly in eliminating turf areas and converting to desert landscaping – something that has saved other HOAs thousands of gallons of water daily.
Scottsdale City Manager Jim Thompson officially announced Stage One of Scottsdale’s Drought Management Plan on August 16, 2021, because of the Bureau of Reclamation’s (BOR) declaration of a Tier One Colorado River shortage and the urgency of the situation on this river system. Recent forecasts by the BOR show an increased likelihood of a Tier 2 shortage for 2023. While water will continue to be delivered as normal to customers now and into the future, Scottsdale views this declaration as a significant milestone that requires extensive examination by all customers to further use water wisely and efficiently for the long-term viability and sustainability of the city. More information can be found at ScottsdaleAZ.gov; search “shortage” for more information on the Colorado River shortage, or search “water conservation” for specific ways to save water. Valerie Schneider is the Public Information Officer for Scottsdale Water.

Hello Neighbor!
HI, MY NAME IS... Bob Roth. I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 28 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The climate, topography, and people are amazing. Scottsdale is a great place to raise a family. Coming from the East Coast we hardly did anything outdoors. Now, our lives in Arizona revolve around being outdoors. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… My wake-up call comes from two yellow Labradors; Lacey (11) and Ruby (1.5) start my day on a positive note because they greet the day with great enthusiasm and optimism. In the warmer months, I will try and get in some tennis with my wife Susie before 7 a.m. and be ready to tackle the day by 8:30 a.m. My workdays fly by, typically concluding before 5 p.m. After 5 p.m. you can find me doing yoga, tennis or catching up with a colleague or friend over a tea or an adult beverage. Dinners are at home these days with Susie, and depending on our energy level, it’s another round of tennis, or we will be watching television and then putting Lacey and Ruby to bed.
MY FAMILY IS… Everything. My wife Susie and I will be celebrating 33 years of marriage soon. She is an amazing mother, partner, and truly my best friend. We have been blessed with three daughters that are healthy and amazing young adult women. Each is happy and has chosen a profession that they love. What more could a father ask for? My family is what I live for, and my chosen profession gives me purpose. My father and brothers have entrusted me in running our family’s business where we are making the difference in individuals and their families every day. What a privilege and honor it is to be able to do the work that we do. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My mom. She was incredibly supportive of me and my brothers when we grew up. When her heart was not well, we had the opportunity to be supportive back by being her family caregivers. It’s hard to believe that this year will be 20

years since she has passed. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think of her. I have her picture in both my work and home office. I know she is smiling down on us and is proud.
my father in my life, who is a character and keeps us all on our toes. At 86 years old, I appreciate every day that we get to have him in our lives. Every moment is precious, and I cherish every one of them. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… Being a father. As we age, or should I say become more experienced, we cross over various milestone moments, and being a father so far has been the best gift I have ever received.
THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Our puppy Ruby makes me laugh every day. She is trying to win over Lacey, who happens to be her great aunt (same breeder), is 10 years older, and plays hard to get. The shenanigans she pulls every day, multiple times a day are hysterical.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… A trip to the Greek Islands and to go back to Israel and Italy with Susie. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... To always be truthful. It’s always easier to remember the truth than lies—my father taught me this at a young age and it’s sage advice that I have passed on to our children.
MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Duet: Partners In Health & Aging. Duet promotes health and well-being through a broad range of services to older adults who need one-on-one support. They help older adults and their families cope with challenges related to aging. Other favorite nonprofits include the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, HonorHealth Foundation, Jewish Community Foundation, and Congregation Beth Israel. MY LIFE IS… About moments. As I have gained more experience and as I get ready to celebrate my 60th birthday this year, I have learned that life is fleeting and it’s all about moments and making those moments matter. I am blessed to still have myhyperlocalnews.com

GOOD NEWS & BAD NEWS The Latest Real Estate Insight for “The Magic Zip Code” By Joseph Callaway
“Good News & Bad News”
T
he real estate market is changing.
Let’s start with the bad news first. If you’ve been wanting to sell, expecting the market to keep spiraling up and up forever or if you wanted more than an already generous market would pay, the party is over. With rising interest rates, many buyers have had to modify their ambitions and investors have become cautious. We are in a stall, a freeze frame, but no, we are not in a decline. There is still a shortage of inventory and an abundance of buyers. We are now seeing a gradual increase in inventory and open houses are drawing fewer visitors. Does this mean you can no

longer sell your home? Quite the contrary. You can still sell—and for a handsome price. You will just have to negotiate more and go back to the tried-and-true marketing techniques like preparing, showing, and advertising the house. Now for the good news. If you have been saying, “Sure I can sell for a lot of money but what can I buy?” Well, now you can buy what you want from sellers who will now be more reasonable. Yes, you will pay a high price, but you will get a high price, making everything relative. If it is time to downsize, jump in and make the move. If your family is growing or your career is on the rise, take the plunge and move up. Now you can. We often speak with clients or potential clients who have put their lives on hold over a piece of real estate. They let things dictate to them when it should be the other way around. Let us all rejoice every day that we live in America where we have property rights and the opportunity to dream the American Dream. Joseph Callaway is the owner of Those Callaways and Callaway Realty. He branded 85254 as “The magic zip code” and has sold more than 1,000 homes in 85254. His cell is 602-796-5751.

Oceans of Possibilities: Maricopa County Reads’ 2022 Summer Reading Program Begins
S
ixty-five libraries across the county are gearing up for Summer Reading as Maricopa County Reads opens June 1 with a community goal of 50 million minutes read. Maricopa County Reads is one of the county’s largest literacy efforts and plays a vital role in reducing learning loss while transitioning between school years. “Building a community of readers means we are building a community of problem solvers, collaborators, and lifelong learners,” says Bill Gates, Chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, District 1. “The Summer Reading program is just one way to continue building an even brighter future for Maricopa County.” Participants earn one point per minute for reading physical or electronic books (including graphic novels) or listening to audiobooks. Additional points are earned for attending in-person and virtual events hosted by librarians and local performers, completing summer reading challenges, and participating in community experiences to find secret codes while exploring Maricopa County. Prizes vary based on the number of points readers achieve. Readers who achieve 1,000 points can choose a free book for their home library or to donate to a local Head Start classroom. The theme of this year’s program is “Oceans of Possibilities,” encouraging readers of all ages to explore the many stories from under the sea. The primary goal of the program is to interrupt the summer slide, the common term given to the learning loss experienced by children while transitioning between school years. The secondary aim of the program is to promote early literacy among pre-readers and their families during the summer months. The Maricopa County Reads summer reading program began in the summer of 2013. It has continued to grow, and now hosts 65 public, tribal and military base libraries within Maricopa County. More than 80,000 children, teens, and adults participate in the program annually. The program runs through August 1 and all Scottsdale Public Library locations are participating. Kids’ Corner
The Importance of Summer Reading Beat The Heat and Encourage Your Kids to Curl Up With a Good Book This Summer By Donna Throckmorton
T
he school year has wrapped up and summer is here. As vacation begins, many parents are struggling to find productive things for kids to do other than spending hours on their electronics. One activity that should be on all to-do lists this summer is joining the summer reading program at your local library. Reading, throughout all seasons and all stages of life, is important. It is indisputable that reading skills are critical for success in school, work, and life in general. In fact, a study from the University College, London, Institute of Education found that children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers. The more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Additional studies have shown that a child who reads proficiently by the end of third grade is more likely to graduate high school because the end of third grade marks the point when children transition from learning to read to using reading to learn other subjects.
Arizona’s Summer Reading Program encourages participants to head to their local library and select and read any material of their choice for just 20 minutes every day. For very young or struggling readers, be sure to spread shorter literacy activities throughout the day. It is recommended that students read books that they choose for themselves; children read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. The ability to choose gives children autonomy and encourages them to stay committed to their decisions. Even re-reading the same books can help build fluency. Summer reading at participating libraries also includes adult programs. Since children often replicate the behaviors of their parents, parents are encouraged to read more as well. Plus, reading has benefits for adults too. Reading reduces stress, slows the progress of age-related memory loss, and boosts sleep quality.
A great way to encourage reading this summer is to schedule consistent time to read as a family. Setting up family reading time at the end of the day can help everyone wind down and make bedtime easier. Summer library programs for all ages provide meaningful, enjoyable experiences available to everyone in the community. It is easy to get started: Simply visit your local library and sign up today! Remember, as Dr. Suess wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” To learn more, visit azsos.libguides.com/ azsummerlibrary. Donna Throckmorton is an Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records Library Services Consultant.
A summer without reading can set students back, with the average student losing 17-34% of the prior year’s learning gains during summer break. Still, according to a report from the White House, reading just five books over the summer can help prevent learning loss.
At LIFE Early Learning Center, our curriculum is designed to equip our students to thrive in today’s world, while simultaneously preparing them to be the Leaders of Tomorrow.

IT’S SOLAR SEASON! Locally Owned Sunsolar Solutions Continues to Shine
By Michelle Talsma Everson
S
ummer is here, which Michael O’Donnell, vice president of sales and co-owner at Sunsolar Solutions, affectionately calls, “Solar Season.” With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year though, Valley residents are switching to solar energy this summer and all year-round. This is evident in the continued growth of the locally owned solar power company. Since its start in 2015, Sunsolar Solutions has helped over 8,300 homeowners go solar across the state and hired more than 115 local employees (not including local contractors!). “We are proud to have brought more than 100 new green jobs to the Valley,” says Val Berechet, president of Sunsolar Solutions. “We are right here, in your backyard. We are a homegrown company that has been doing business in the Valley—and growing—for seven years.” In addition to Berechet and O’Donnell, Sunsolar Solutions is also lead by Troy Dinbokowitz. Solar energy works by capturing the sun’s energy and turning it into electricity through solar panels. With hundreds of sunny days each year, the Valley of the Sun is literally the perfect place for those considering supplementing some of their energy usage with solar power. “Our innovative solar solutions and technology works to power your entire home with clean, renewable 16 • June/July 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
energy – all from just the sun,” according to the company. “With each solar panel, you’ll be combatting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing your fossil fuel dependency while saving up to 95 percent on your electricity bill… By investing in a solar system today, you’ll be cultivating a brighter tomorrow.” “We have a deep understanding of the local market and local utilities,” Berechet explains. “We are an experienced local company and take care of everything from start to finish.”
“
SOME BENEFITS OF GOING SOLAR WITH SUNSOLAR SOLUTIONS INCLUDE: • Increase your property value. • No upfront costs. • Customers can save up to 95% off of their electric bill. • Protection against inflation and energy cost increases from the electric company. • Increasing the property value. • Earning a great return on your investment. • Going green. • Providing clean, reliable energy.
By helping thousands of Arizona households switch to solar energy, Berechet shares how Sunsolar Solutions is making an impressive green impact on the environment. “The latest statistics show that, so far, we’ve helped to reduce an estimated 6.8 million tons of CO2 emissions. This reduction is the equivalent of 16.2 million trees planted. We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!”

We’ve also helped to save 170.4 million gallons of water and counting!” “Doing business right and providing quality customer experience—plus referrals and good online reviews—has paid dividends in how much we’ve grown,” Berechet explains. “It’s led to more customers and, thanks to their business, more employees.” Because of their impressive growth, Sunsolar Solutions moved into a 19,000 square foot installation center and a 2,500 square foot sales space just last year, adding to the 3,000 square foot administrative office they occupied prior. What makes Sunsolar Solutions stand out among other solar companies that locals could work with? O’Donnell shares that it has to do with how their company provides quality service and transparency, ensuring the customer has the correct expectations. “Eighty percent of solar companies don’t actually install the solar panels that they sell you,” he explains. “We do it all—sales and installation. We also always provide the total cost to customers so they know what to expect. And, if we can, we provide multiple design options for them to choose from, so they can pick which one works best for their budget. Of course, our goal is always to get their electric bill down to zero.” “Because we are local and hands-on, we can handle every aspect of installation and walk the customer through the entire process,” O’Donnell continues. Sunsolar Solutions’ goal, even if they don’t make a sale, is to educate customers and those interested in solar. They always provide their sales reps with ongoing education and the tools they need to make an honest sale and provide all the facts when meeting potential solar panel owners. “This is a great company to work with,” says Teresa R., a Sunsolar customer. “I had another family member buy from another company more than a month before

me and they’re still waiting. Mine is completed and running.” “I had Sunsolar Solutions do my solar install and it has been awesome,” says Curtis, another recent customer. “They did extremely good work and kept me up to date as to what was going on all along the way. They even ensured everything was painted to match!” “Sunsolar Solutions doesn’t just come out once, install panels, and leave,” O’Donnell shares. “When you work with us, not only do we do everything, but it’s the beginning of a 25-year relationship. We provide assurance, maintenance, warranties, and can always come to help in-person as we’re local.” For those who are interested in investing in solar power, Sunsolar Solutions’ team shares that now is the time. O’Donnell explains that there is a deadline for APS customers to switch to solar to still be grandfathered into their current solar buyback program—which is going down 10 percent, meaning less energy savings for
solar power customers. But those who act before the August 31 deadline will be able to be grandfathered in to the current program. Whether a new customer signs up this summer or another time, the Sunsolar team shares that they are grateful for their continued growth. “We’re doing well because we’re doing good for the community and the environment,” Berechet says. “We are excited for today and what the future holds.” “Thanks to community support and our success, we’ve really made an impact on both the economy and environment,” O’Donnell says. “Every solar system that we install really moves the needle in the right direction for saving money for that family but also a positive impact on the economy and environment.” To learn more and inquire about a free consultation, visit sunsolarsolutions.com or call 623-562-9009. "I CAN ENJOY MY LIFE AGAIN!" Diane had been experiencing the painful side effects of sciatic pain due to a lumbar radiculopathy, "my low back and legs were extremely painful and I was told there was nothing else they could do." She tried injections, medications, exercise and nothing worked. Then she met Dr. Kourtney Zamora, a doctor of acupuncture at The Pines Acupuncture in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lumbar radiculopathy is the pain, discomfort, and numbness caused by a disease involving the spinal nerve root. Oftentimes, this can cause nerve pain down the leg called sciatic pain.
Fortunately, Diane started Dr. Zamora's sciatic pain relief program and has had lasting relief.
Diane enthusiastically describes life after receiving Dr. Zamora’s treatments. “I can now sleep without pain and walk Diane expressed that going to get the mail, cooking, and trying to sleep were all without pain! Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. very painful. "How can you imagine the next 30 years when you don't even want I don’t have that burning sensation. I'm able to get a good nights rest." to get out of bed to do simple things?" She was experiencing the burning, numbness, tingling, and sharp pains that those suffering from sciatic pain often describe. "The way that I would describe it, it's equivalent to an electric shock down my leg."
Diane hadn't slept more than 4 hours at a time in five years and was cancelling family events because she was fearful she would end up in too much pain by the end of the day. Diane's story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people in the U.S. suffering from low back pain and sciatic pain.
“I am so grateful to have found something that will allow me to enjoy my life again!!”

How A Revocable Trust Benefits You and Your Family By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
T
he Revocable Living Trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. I like to think of your Trust as your treasure chest. The assets you worked and saved to accumulate go into your Trust. While you are alive and able, you are taking care of the treasure chest as the trustee, and you are the only beneficiary of the assets. If you can’t take care of your treasures (manage your finances), either because of your death or because you are incapacitated, you have named a successor trustee to step in to take over managing the assets. How do we put things in the Trust? We title your home, bank account, brokerage account and other assets in your name as trustee rather than in your individual name as owner. For instance, for the home of a husband and wife (we’ll call them John and Ann Smith), we prepare, sign, and record a deed to the house. In the deed John Smith and Ann Smith, husband and wife, convey their house to John Smith and Ann Smith, Trustees of the John and Ann Smith Trust. The same thing happens with your financial accounts.

My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the Trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees. However, when a client has become incapacitated or passed away, their designated successor trustee certainly notices the difference. Summer Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal
IN THEATERS
“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Desperate for cash and work, Nicolas Cage takes a gig to appear at a millionaire fan’s birthday party, only to be pulled into something far more dangerous and bizarre. “Unbearable Weight” is like a movie pitch that you would hear on Twitter or Reddit. From the well-loved actor playing himself to its “Paddington 2” jokes, it’s a movie that could easily be a disaster in the making. However, there’s a sincere charm to the film, helped mainly by how our leading man commits so much to this caricature of himself and his chemistry with Pedro Pascal’s excited but dweebish fanboy. There’s also some surprisingly smart filmmaking here, particularly in its editing style that seems to change scene by scene based on the tone. It’s a nice example of a film that has fun but doesn’t make fun of its topic, even if it does stretch out that main joke. myhyperlocalnews.com
“The Northman” A prince of a once noble kingdom seeks vengeance on the man who killed his father and kidnapped his mother. There’s a sort of ticking clock that can’t be heard but is felt throughout “The Northman.” Each moment there’s the possibility of sudden chaos, terror and death for any of the characters. How the film plays with your expectations of something grandiose, only for it to be more simplistic and grounded, also really plays into the tense nature of the film. It’s delicious, watching Amleth plot every move against Fjölnir and seeing the fear and hatred in his eyes. Meanwhile, every other character is working on their own and constantly on their feet; and the characters act in ways you wouldn’t expect for their archetype, particularly Claes Bang as the villain. There’s a terror to the film present from Robert Eggers’ previous films but it’s primarily about the brutality of revenge and a cruel world. You will be impressed by the balance of scale and intimacy of the film, but still feel a sense of horror from what you watched. “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness” The master of the mystic arts returns to assist a mysterious girl who is being chased by an evil force. Despite being his first directorial feature in nearly ten years, it’s as if Sam Raimi never stopped. The cheerful terror and insanity of his many works can be seen here; from laughing devils, creative editing and camerawork, grotesque visuals, and so much more. It elevates the film from a very weak script, one that’s mostly guided by Benedict Cumberbatch’s quality performance as the titular character, but unfortunately leaves the other characters out. This film doesn’t leave much room for the viewer to figure things out for themselves and could have resulted in a worse movie in the hands of a different director. But there are some themes of happiness and responsibility present here that are thankfully explored, making Strange and Wanda Maximoff’s journeys feel fulfilling and even heart-
breaking. I’ve been down on the MCU a lot lately, but “Multiverse Of Madness” is mostly a welcome change of pace. “Watcher” A woman who moves to Bucharest grows a fear of her neighbor who may or may not be a killer. Chloe Okuno is going to be a director to keep an eye on if her debut film “Watcher” is anything to go on. The gloomy, muted streets of Bucharest are often photographed as being populated with few or no extras, adding to the lonely and hunted feeling our lead is given. It’s dripping with fear and in the film’s scariest moments we feel like we are there looking over our shoulders. Our lead in question is played excellently by Maika Monroe, finally given a truly great role since her breakout in “It Follows.” The real standout though is Burn Gorman, who despite not being in it much, is terrifying and delivers one of the best monologues of the year. It takes a bit to get going, but those who stick around will be rewarded with one of the best thrillers of the year.

Why You Still Have Sciatica and Back Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
D
o everyday activities like finding comfortable sleeping positions and walking feel impossible because of sciatica and back pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried “everything,” but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. Some back pain and sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone regardless of the type to reduce daily pain. Most people with sciatica and back pain just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery. You’ve likely already tried many different things. Usually the list includes massage, stretching, chiropractic, and different exercises. One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.” You don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. Sciatica and back pain is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that these are complex conditions with many contributing factors. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain and will continue to persist unless they are fixed. This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually start to pinch on nerves, causing sciatica and back pain. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the way to target the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica and Back Pain May Be Lasting Longer Than It Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse. 2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back. 3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work… 5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica and back pain gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked If any of these things have happened to you,
unfortunately, it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause. What To Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica and back pain worse. Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your pain and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica and back pain has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby. Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved. Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve and puts pressure on your spine. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back. Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica and back pain worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active. How to Fix Sciatica and Back Pain for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately, a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.” Tips and Exercises to Crush Sciatica and Back Pain for Good Join the community back pain workshop on June 22nd at 6:30 p.m. for a free, fun, and interactive event to get back to picking up your kids or just standing and walking. Register for the popular event by calling or texting 480-4820651 and asking to reserve a seat, or emailing info@thedoctorsofpt.com with your phone number and “I want to come to the back pain workshop.” Or, if you’d like to meet with a specialist one on one for a personalized diagnosis and roadmap to healing, ask about scheduling a free discovery visit. The doctors believe in teaching you about your body and finding an approach that works best for you. Through getting to know your history, they’ll help you identify the approach that will target the root cause of your pain.
