In total, Scottsdale 101 is home to more than 50 diverse businesses including C2 Tactical, Escape Room 101, Cien Agaves and Bowlero, a 32-lane bowling alley complete with a restaurant, bar and arcade. And, of course, the iconic Harkins Theaters Cine Capri. This relocated, reincarnation of a classic Phoenix attraction continues to draw multitudes of moviegoers every night of the week.
Other recent openings have included a diverse mix of tasty restaurants and services such as Hot and Juicy Crawfish, Oralast Health and Wellness Oral Pathology Clinic, and Camp Bow Wow, an all-day dog daycare and boarding facility.

ARIZONA RESTAURANT WEEKS: DINE IN OR TAKE OUT
WHEN COVID-19 THREATENED THE VERY CORE OF THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY WITH CLOSURES IN MID-MARCH, RESTAURANT OWNERS RESPONDED IN TURN — SHOWING THEIR STRENGTH BY QUICKLY ADAPTING THEIR BUSINESS MODELS TO OFFER TAKE-OUT, CURBSIDE AND DELIVERY OPTIONS, AND THE WIDELY EMBRACED COCKTAILS TO GO. The local community showed up, too, in support of these very restaurants that make up the Valley’s dynamic culinary scene. With the mandates, however, one of the most beloved culinary events of the year, Arizona Restaurant Week, was placed on hold while Arizona Takeout Weeks stepped in to encourage continued dining support. Meanwhile, the Arizona Restaurant Association created

Arizona Restaurant Strong, a relief fund to provide funding for restaurant workers that found themselves immediately out of work due to closures surrounding the virus. Now, the Arizona Restaurant Association is pleased to announce that Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out (ARW) will take place from Friday, June 19 through Sunday, June 28 and Friday, September 18 through Sunday, September 27. “We are so grateful for the support of our local dining community in the weeks that followed restaurant closures in March,” says Arizona Restaurant Association president and CEO Steve Chucri. “The quick creation of Arizona Takeout Weeks and Arizona Restaurant Strong efforts could not have been possible without them. As Arizona Restaurant
Weeks returns in a modified format to include dine-in, take out and liquor to go options, we are hopeful that our wonderful community of food enthusiasts will continue to show their support in any way they feel comfortable.” During the new Arizona Restaurant Weeks: Dine in or Take Out, participating restaurants will follow all CDC guidelines for opening and social distancing, whether dining in or taking out. The ARA is anticipating more than 200 of the Valley’s most beloved restaurants — from five-star fine dining establishments to locally owned and operated “mom and pop” hidden gems — to get involved. As in years past, participating restaurants around the state will offer culinary adventurers dedicated
menus that showcase local chefs’ creative talents through innovative dishes. Featuring a unique tasting opportunity apart from their regular menus, restaurants will offer threecourse, prix-fixe menus for just $33 or $44 per person. Wine pairings to enhance each course are offered at some establishments for an additional cost.
New and returning restaurants are welcome and encouraged to participate in this year’s ARW events. Applications can be completed online at arizonarestaurantweek.com/ restaurant-participation. A LOCAL NONPROFIT SUPPORTS MINORITY STUDENTS IN MEDICINE RECENTLY, TWO SCOTTSDALE PHYSICIANS, DR. ALYX PORTER UMPHREY AND DR. GREGORY UMPHREY, SAW THE EXPLOSION OF A DREAM COME TRUE WHEN THEY PUBLICLY LAUNCHED ELEVATEMED, A LOCAL NONPROFIT. ElevateMeD is committed to elevating the field of medicine by providing financial support and mentorship to future physicians of historically underrepresented backgrounds. In its first year, the Scottsdale-based organization has established a diverse board of directors whose efforts have raised more than $200,000 toward their scholarship program. The obstacles this physician couple faced on their journey are what many students from underrepresented backgrounds will face in their pursuit of medicine. According to The American Medical Student Association, “cost is the top reason qualified minority students reported not enrolling in medical school.” This is one contributing factor to our nation’s disproportionate representation in the medical field, directly impacting health disparities like those reported during COVID-19. ElevateMeD is on a mission to increase physician workforce diversity and improve cultural competence among physicians to reduce those health disparities. After accruing and paying off more than $300,000 in combined medical school debt, Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey and Dr. Gregory Umphrey saw ElevateMeD as a solution to create lasting change for the next generation of physician leaders. ElevateMeD is committed to providing that support through the Scholars Program, a multifaceted program designed to annually provide 10 recipients a $10,000 scholarship during each year of their medical program, physician mentorship, access to peer network support, leadership development opportunities, and financial management education. ElevateMeD proudly just announced its first inaugural cohort of students from across the U.S. These students were
nominated by partnering institutions and then selected through an application process. This year’s cohort of scholars include: Aaron Bia (University of Arizona), Anthony Osifuye (University of Minnesota), Christian Freeman (Emory University), Gabriela Alejo (UT Southwestern Medical Center), Harvey Lewis (Howard University), Kalonji Cole (Charles R. Drew University/UCLA), Louisa Appiah (East Carolina University), Mahdieh Hosseini (Temple University), Shannon Coombs (Mayo Clinic), and Shanita Thomas (Wayne State University). “Of all of the moments filled with various emotions that have been brought forward by COVID-19, one of the most impactful and sustaining has been the selection process of our inaugural cohort of scholars,” shares Dr. Alyx Porter Umphrey, who also serves as executive director. “I have never been more certain that our future is bright. THE IMPORTANCE OF SUMMER READING, NOW MORE THAN EVER By Michelle Talsma Everson
A
recent study of children in the third to fifth grades showed that students lost an average of 20 percent of their school year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school year gains in math during summer break, according to Scholastic. com. With this school year already disrupted due to COVID-19, experts note that now, more than ever before, it’s crucial to encourage students of all ages to read during the summer. One local resource for busy families is the Read On Arizona website at readonarizona.org. On the website, you can use the “Find a Book” tool to find books that meet your child’s interest and reading level; use a reading log to track time spent reading; and find other helpful educational resources. Another resource for families includes Read Across America’s Kids Summer Reading List website at readacrossamerica.org/kids-summer-reading-list. Here, families can find an array of reading resources, book recommendations, and parenting tips. Some ideas include joining the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, where you receive digital
rewards, or the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program, where young readers can earn a free book after reading eight books. What can parents do to help reverse the “Summer Slide” (when children lose their reading and math skills over the summer)? Scholastic.com recommends that parents allow children to read the books they’re most interested in; make time for “smart play,” such as games and puzzles; allow kids to use their imagination through imaginative play such as LEGO, etc.; and join a summer reading program at your local library. The Scottsdale Library’s Summer Reading Program, Imagine Your Story, take place now through August 1. People of all ages can sign up online and earn points for every minute they read. Game boards for children can be picked up at the drive-thru windows of Appaloosa, Arabian and Mustang Libraries, curbside at Civic Center Library, or parents can download and print out game boards through the website. TIPS FOR POSITIVE FAMILY COMMUNICATION DURING COVID-19

F
amilies are facing some very difficult conversations now that Arizona has re-opened. A range of strong opinions about social distancing and safety precautions may cause family conflict if communication breakdowns and negative emotional reactions go unchecked. Even some spouses are split over best practices during the pandemic. Enter extended families into the equation and the range of opinions can quickly become a heated blame game. Some family members would rather not have any conversation at this point. Some are consumed with fear and anxiety. Some are focused on the science and support adhering to CDC guidelines and social distancing protocols. Others question the level of risk or prefer to return to normal, even acknowledging the potential for negative health outcomes within our community. Family conflict is nothing new and can be overcome when family members are committed to healthy communication with the help of some mutually agreed upon guidelines for conversations. You could propose your own version of the following suggested communication guidelines to ensure less conflict and better family discussions: • We will be respectful of one another and respect all opinions as valid. • We will make proposals about how to connect as a family instead of making demands. Family members prefer to be “asked” if they are willing to do something compared to be “told” what they should do. • We will be open to compromising whenever we can all “live with” a solution that isn’t perfect but works for everyone. • We will avoid interrupting as best we can and ensure that each person’s voice is heard. thescottsdalestandard.com
• We will listen carefully to understand how each person sees the situation so we can “see the world through his or her eyes.” • We will stay positive and be gentle with each other, rather than placing blame or becoming judgmental. • We will acknowledge that we all love one another and want to be close again. The pandemic is temporary, but our family is forever. • We accept that we won’t all agree 100% of the time. If we disagree, we respect each person’s right to make his or her own decisions. Once you all agree on guidelines, schedule a family talk. Start with a fun activity to celebrate being together, maybe a virtual dance challenge, silliest joke exchange, or perhaps a rousing chorus of “We are Family.” When you begin, be prepared for a difficult conversation. uring the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, instead of just closing up shop and waiting for the goahead to open up again, the team at The Covenant decided to switch gears and transition to a new restaurant concept: PV Pie & Wine. “We knew we wanted to adapt with the needs of the community,” says owner Carrie Lane about the transition. “We didn’t have a walk-up service for easy take-out orders. While we loved the concept of The Covenant and are proud of all that we accomplished with that restaurant, we listened to what our customers were telling us. Feedback indicated the desire for a casual dining experience that would provide a more family-friendly environment. The downtime afforded by the shutdown allowed us to make these modifications. You will notice that much of the decor is the same or similar with pops of a new more casual layout for a more relaxed visit.”

So what will be different for those who are used to The Covenant? “The big yellow door will remain and we are actually keeping some of the favorite Covenant dishes while adding roman style pizzas, some flavorful pasta dishes, and tried and true sandwiches,” Lane shares. “We have brought on a new chef, James Moran, to guide these new dishes while preserving those fan favorites from the old place. We will have some of our signature appetizers including the unique and beautiful hummus board along with our fan favorite ceviche. You will also see some of the favorite entrees including the cedar plank salmon and the short rib ravioli. However, in this changing time, we want to expand our menu for ease of take out and relax the menu a bit for the everyday pick up or dine in experience.” She adds that the decor is also a little different. “We have put a bigger focus on our wine room, with its two spiral staircases and ample room; we will fill it with an eclectic and affordable wine selection. We will also have some bottle choices for those looking for something a bit bigger. The bar is a bit smaller, but the energy will be even better.” Some other changes include the fact that PV Pie & Wine will have more seating than The Covenant did. Guests can expect a more relaxed setting with a changed color palate and new furniture, with the focus on guest comfort. “Whereas The Covenant seemed more appropriate for a special occasion, PV Pie & Wine will feel more like your favorite everyday spot,” Lane says. “We will be blending the best dishes of The Covenant while taking the direct input from our customers over the last two plus years,” she continues. “Aside from our great location, we’ve put a good amount of attention behind setting up our dining space to enhance the way that people interact socially. We have a large screen playing classic movies, which is something that we believe provides a sense of nostalgia and commonality. While we intend to make pizza our main thescottsdalestandard.com

focus, we won’t be just a pizzeria. We’ll be able to offer something for everyone, including our popular classic cocktails, our handmade house cocktails, wine and local craft beers.” When it comes to concerns regarding the novel coronavirus, Lane shares that PV Pie & Wine is taking all necessary precautions.
“We will strictly adhere to all CDC guidelines, we will have hand washing logs, and hand sanitizer stations for guests and our team,” she says. “We will change and adapt to the current times. The guests’ safety and that of our team are a top priority. We will try our best in this challenging environment; some may think we are going overboard and others may think we have not done enough. Our goal is to be consistent and follow minute by minute, daily, and weekly sanitation protocols to insure the best possible experience while keeping safety as the priority.” Family owned and operated, PV Pie & Wine does a lot for the community through food donation and sponsoring events. They often work in tandem with their sister restaurant, O.H.S.O Brewery. Some of the dishes Lane says that customers will love are PV Pie & Wine’s Roman style pizzas, available with a variety of toppings, cedar plank salmon, ceviche, and an updated chopped salad that “is out of this world.” On Mondays and Tuesdays, there is a $35 pizza and bottle of wine special. “We are open for one and all. We will have a big to-go focus and online ordering for those in a hurry or not wanting to get out of their car. You will be able to pull up and get curbside to your car,” Lane says. “We also want to let people know the wines, food and vibe will be a bit more approachable with a greater emphasis on fun, family and a relaxed experience.” PV Pie & Wine is now open where The Covenant used to be located; 4740 E. IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR OLD TRUST? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks
I
review many trusts, and some of them are quite old. After these old trusts were put in place, a lot of things have changed. For example, the federal estate tax exemption increased substantially in 2012, a new Arizona Trust Code was put in place in 2009, and most recently a new law affects those inheriting IRAs. Then, of course, the situation of the people who are included in the trust have often changed completely. When so much has changed, it’s clearly time to update the trust. When we do an update, we usually do a complete amendment – called a restatement – of the trust. We keep the original trust name and date, and just note that it was restated as of the date we sign the new documents. That way, anything already titled to or transferred to the trust is still in the trust – we have no need to change the title on homes or bank accounts again. Older trusts for a couple may require the surviving spouse to split the trust into two trusts on the death of the first spouse. This was standard estate tax planning
before the increase in the federal tax exemption. It is unnecessarily complicated and most married couples don’t need this type of plan anymore. An update can simplify the estate plan for the surviving spouse.
Some of the plans I review still have guardians listed – but the children are now in their thirties with their own children. The trustees or executors may also no longer be the best choice, or even still alive. The change in the Arizona Trust Code also gives us some easy ways to leave money in trust for our children. The advantage of the trust you leave for your children is protection of the trust money and assets in the event of divorce, and asset protection from creditors. Leaving your children their inheritance in trust may protect the inheritance at their death as well. Let’s say your daughter inherits from you and puts everything in joint accounts. On her death, her husband will receive all of the inheritance because it is now joint property. And then, what if he remarries and doesn’t put a plan in place for those assets to go to your grandchildren? The assets may go to the new wife,

WHIPLASH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS Contributed by Dr. Beau Horner
T
he most common causes of neck pain are from muscle strains or soft tissue sprains. Yet another common cause of neck pain that doesn’t always immediately show symptoms is whiplash. Whiplash, also called acceleration-deceleration injury, is most commonly caused from motor vehicle accidents. But any kind of trauma to the neck can show signs and symptoms of whiplash. Some studies have shown that 50% of neck injuries from a motor vehicle crash will continue to show symptoms for up to a year after the crash. The evidence suggests that neck injuries in a motor vehicle crash more than doubles the risk for developing future chronic neck pain. As a result, chronic neck pain can limit physical activity and impact health and quality of life. When a patient comes in for an initial
visit with neck pain that may be related to a whiplash injury, the following steps are taken: 1. Comprehensive patient history 2. Physical examination 3. Diagnostic imaging
If symptoms are mild to moderate, some self-care options are: rest, a combination of ice and heat, and over-thecounter pain relievers like Advil and Aleve. However, when the whiplash symptoms are severe or becoming more frequent, medical care is recommended. These combinations of treatments can include chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, injections, and prescription pain medications. In addition, treatments such as postural correction exercises, neck stretches, an ergonomic pillow, and posture blocks can help neck pain.
