Nature is Forcing Choices on Energy: We Can Make Rational Ones

After months of unsuccessful negotiations between the southwestern states that draw water from the Colorado River, the Biden administration last month proposed a solution that could, hopefully, spur serious action toward an agreement. If the states can’t reach a deal this year, the federal government will sweep aside the states’ traditional, highly unequal system of seniority rights and unilaterally cut allocations to the three states that draw from the river’s Lower Basin—California, Arizona, and Nevada—by almost 25% each.

The high-pressure bid by the federal government reflects the urgency of the problem. Reservoirs fed by the river have fallen to historic lows, threatening (among other dire consequences) to leave hydroelectric generators at a standstill as the populations of Arizona and other southwestern states continue to swell. Whether or not the threatened action, which would be unprecedented, translates into compromise over the historically intractable issue remains to be seen, although at least one expert is optimistic.

“They’re showing that they will tell the states what to do,” said Dr. Sharon Megdal, director of the University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center, as quoted in “The New York Times.” “It will now be up to the states to say, well, we have a better idea—and here it is.”

Ultimately, though, it’s Mother Nature, not Uncle Sam, who is compelling action.

said Brad Udall, a water and climate scientist at Colorado State University, in an interview with “Smithsonian Magazine.” “I don’t know that anybody would tell you where we’re going. But if we don’t make decisions fast, nature’s going to make them for us.”

Indeed, consequences from climate change are, at this point, inevitable. What’s worse, the interconnection of natural and manmade systems means that problems can trigger feedback loops, amplifying the causes of the problems themselves. The threat to hydropower is just one example of this potentially selfreinforcing quality of climate change. Global warming reduces snowpack and increases evaporation, depriving hydroelectric dams of the water needed to spin their turbines. We’ll have to make up the shortfall somehow, and if we don’t have renewable sources in place, more fossil fuels will likely fill the void, an option that would increase output of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and, hence, further intensify the climatic phenomena that are drying up the Colorado River.

Meanwhile, our state governments continue their century-long pattern of stubborn and self-defeating wrangling over the so-called “law of the river,” a deal that is badly outdated in an era of megadrought and was grossly misconceived even when it was first struck in the early twentieth century. The ever-encroaching consequences of climate change, together with the perennial failure of southwestern states to agree on a sustainable way of using their most precious resource, do not

inspire a feeling of hope.

Yet we are not victims of circumstances, natural or political. Nature and technology present opportunities to manage our resources in more rational, less damaging ways, and we can choose to make use of them if we have the will. Solar power, a technology that makes use of what is by far our most abundant natural source of energy, offers an especially promising opportunity.

If we step back and evaluate the situation rationally, we can see how it’s possible to make use of the powerful dynamic systems in which our society is embedded, not just suffer their consequences. As a clean source of energy, solar panels enable us to emit less planet-warming gas like CO2, contributing less to climate change and thereby mitigating the cause of drought.

Meanwhile, less demand for dirty power means less water consumption by the fossil-fuel-burning plants that supply that demand. (According to the Arizona Water Institute, coalburning plants consume 510 gallons per megawatt-hour produced, while naturalgas plants consume 415 gal./MWhr.)

The hydropower problem is, thus, a great example of how the interconnected systems on which we depend provide opportunities to fight vicious cycles with virtuous ones.

The lead negotiator for Nevada— which, like Arizona, would lose out if the traditional seniority rights were enforced—summed up the irrationality of our habitual way of using resources. “We have 19th century laws, we have 20th century infrastructure, and we have

21st century climate,” John Entsminger told “The New York Times.” “And those three things don’t fit very well together.”

The truth of Entsminger’s statement may be more general than he realized. It’s not just our water use that doesn’t make sense. In the 19th century, our country led the way to a new world of massgenerated and -distributed electricity as a way of powering human civilization, yet in the twenty-first century, we are by some measures lagging other countries in the global transition to the cleanpower systems of the future.

The United States ranks 10th in the world in the amount of solar power it generates per person, at 1,300 kilowatthours per capita. With only 3.75% of our energy consumption coming from solar power, we rank 47th in solar power as a fraction of energy consumed. Meanwhile, we still rely on fossil fuels— the stuff ultimately causing all the misery stemming from drought, flooding, heat waves, and increasingly frequent and powerful storms—to generate a large majority (79%) of our power.

But the irrationality of the systems we currently rely on—technological or political—does not have to stymie progress. We can make more rational choices about how to use our precious resources.

One such choice you can make as an individual homeowner is to switch your family’s source of energy from the coalburning power company to a 100% clean solar system. Call SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

After 23 years, Hunkapi Programs has secured a forever farm in Scottsdale. For the past six years, Hunkapi has held a long-term lease on its current location, a 10-acre farm on the Cactus Corridor. After months of fundraising, the farm has finally secured the funds necessary to make it their permanent home. The farm was originally owned by the Conroy Family Trust. To ensure the legacy of Rod Conroy and his love of horses, the trust was committed to transitioning the property to Hunkapi as the next “stewards” of the land. In October, Hunkapi will launch a capital campaign to raise enough funds to complete the purchase. Hunkapi is committed to keeping the 10 acres an equine facility that provides therapy and hosts community events.

“We are humbled to have such a beautiful piece of property to continue sharing the healing powers of our horses with the community and to continue in our mission to ‘teach the world to fear less and love more’,” says Hunkapi Programs Founder Terra Schaad. “It was important for us to stay close to the people we serve. We couldn’t be more thrilled to call Scottsdale home and to help preserve the western spirit and cowboy ethics of the West’s Most Western Town.”

The farm is now home to 35 retired and rescued horses, two donkeys, two Holstein cows, two potbelly pigs, a flock of chickens and a pack of rescued farm dogs that are integrated into a wide variety of therapeutic services. Hunkapi provides equine assisted psychotherapy, therapeutic riding, and equine assisted life skills. For more information, visit hunkapi.org.

AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES IN SCOTTSDALE, A NEW SUMMER PROGRAM AIMS TO BRING RELIEF TO HOME-BOUND SENIORS IN NEED. The “Beat the Heat” initiative will provide essential heat relief items to vulnerable seniors and assist in connecting them with necessary resources.

The program, a collaborative effort between the city of Scottsdale and dedicated volunteers, serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it provides homebound seniors with items to help them stay cool during the sweltering summer months. Secondly, the initiative enables city staff and volunteers to assess the needs of the seniors and connect them with the required resources.

community. Donations can be dropped off at the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Via Linda, through May 26, with collection hours from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to physical donations, monetary contributions are also welcome and will be accepted until May 26. The support of the Scottsdale community is vital in ensuring that the city’s most vulnerable seniors can stay cool and comfortable during the harsh summer months.

For a shopping list or to make a monetary donation, visit scottsdaleaz.gov/seniors/adopt-a-senior. For information on how to donate or get involved with the “Beat the Heat” program, contact the city’s Human Services Representative Nakota Cini at 480-312-5811.

Community Hospice Team Helps 101-Year-Old Math Whiz Share Secret to Solving Rubik’s Cube

Dr. Evar Nering’s passion for numbers has only grown stronger over a century of living.

The 101-year-old began his career as a young man at Princeton, earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics. He later helped create an algorithm for linear programming that garnered five patents. He spent three decades teaching at Arizona State University, building its math program and chairing the department for eight years.

Obviously, Nering has a lot of experience with equations, theorems, and statistics. But his most pressing challenge is the one he is facing now: How to share his algorithm for solving the Rubik’s Cube.

Most people abandon the frustrating 3D puzzle within a few minutes. But not Nering. He was so intrigued that he set out to create a mathematical formula that anyone could use.

“I’ve seen videos of people working the Rubik’s Cube super-fast, but I can’t tell what’s happening,” the Scottsdale resident chuckles. “I’m not about speed or competing. At my age, I just want to give my algorithm to the world — as my legacy.”

As soon as Nering’s Hospice of the Valley care team heard about his dream, they wanted to help. “Even at 101, he is very mentally alert and loves to talk about math,” says social worker Alanna Ambos. “We decided to connect him with someone who shares that same joy.”

So, Ambos and nurse Bonnie Lazzeri teamed with Nering’s daughter and caregiver to reach out to a math professor at Gateway Community College. JW Gaberdiel agreed to visit Nering to learn about his formula.

“Evar’s algorithm is for any cube size and that’s part of its power,” Gaberdiel says. “His approach is symmetric and beautiful, but not necessarily fast. That is also its charm. There’s something elegant about it.”

The men spent two hours together, chatting about Nering’s life, career, and dream to help all of us conquer the Rubik’s Cube.

“I like the challenge of solving problems,” Nering admits. “And getting my algorithm out there in the public domain is just one more thing to figure out.”

In the meantime, he’s sharing it with us. For Nering’s solution, visit hov. org/media/3016/evar-paper.pdf.

Education Musical Prodigy Benny Taylor Shines at North Ranch Elementary School, Inspires Community with Unwavering Passion for Violin

Paradise Valley Unified School District’s North Ranch Elementary School is beaming with pride as young violin virtuoso, Benny Taylor, takes center stage in the local classical music scene. Recently featured on the renowned KBACH radio station, Benny’s exceptional talent has been captivating audiences and inspiring fellow students.

Having played the violin for eight years, Taylor’s dedication to his craft is evident in his impressive accomplishments. For half a decade, he has been a key member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, even serving as concertmaster, which he cites as one of his fondest musical memories.

Taylor’s prodigious abilities are rooted in a rich family history of professional musicians who have devoted their lives to classical music. His mother, in particular, has been his greatest musical inspiration. With a deep affinity for the classical genre, Taylor’s favorite piece is “Millionaires Hoedown” by Herman Clebanoff, and he holds Friedrich Seitz in high regard as his top composer.

Despite his extraordinary musical achievements, Benny remains grounded and maintains a variety of interests outside the realm of music. North Ranch Elementary School and PVSchools couldn’t be prouder of their multitalented student, whose passion and humility serve as an inspiration to all.

OFF WITH THE LYRICAL TUNE OF VIBRATIONS.

What’s that sound? Sound waves are vibrations and while music may be invisible, it doesn’t take much to know it’s there. And you don’t need a fancy guitar or a grand piano to play a song - you can create a musical instrument at home and play it with air from your very own lungs. In this activity, explore the sounds you make with a whistle crafted from a piece of paper.

YOU WILL NEED:

• 1 paper whistle (instructions below)

• 1 pair of scissors

MAKE A PAPER WHISTLE:

1. With adult supervision, draw and cut out a whistle blueprint that looks like the diagram on this page.

2. Fold along dotted lines

3. Once folded, cut the small triangle from the larger bottom fold

4. Open smaller folds like a book, and gently hold against lips with a finger on each side. Don’t press too hard or air can’t flow through easily. Purse lips and blow air into the whistle.

Hello Neighbor! Neighbors

HI, MY NAME IS… Michael Kunze.

I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 23 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the amazing recreation available around the Valley. It is an ideal location for a Boy Scout leader.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… working at Sagewood and spending time with the amazing residents living here. Then flipping the page and supporting local scout organizations as a leader and participating in youth athletics with my family.

MY FAMILY IS… the reason I enjoy life the most! My wife, Robyn, is a food service director at Phoenix Country Day, my 13-year-old son, Greyson, is about to transition to the amazing CREST program at Paradise Valley High School, and my 10-year-old daughter, Amaya, is a fourth grader at Benchmark Elementary. Both of my children are in Scouts of America; my son is a star scout with Troop 818, and my daughter is a Weblos scout with Pack 116.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… University of Connecticut Athletics. I am a proud alumnus and closely follow the teams through their successes and failures.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… “Shawshank Redemption.” I simply love the friendships the characters developed in an unfortunate circumstance.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… a fireman. I never did pursue that career, but I have many close friends who are firefighters throughout the Valley.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… there is no chance I would ever sing in public. It is not my idea of a way to enjoy myself.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my deceased father. I continually think of how my dad would act in a situation, and still marvel at how organized and self-motivated he was.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my silly daughter who is an introvert in public but is the funniest person in private. She constantly makes our family laugh.

THE PERFECT DAY… in my opinion would be a day off in nature exploring our amazing national parks.

MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Boy Scouts of America, or now the Scouts of America. I am an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 818, as well as a pack committee chair for Pack 116.

MY LIFE IS… busy at this point. Work has been challenging, as the nation comes out of the supply chain issues and into inflation trends affecting the senior living industry. At Sagewood, we are working to make sure residents have everything they need so outside challenges can make my life extra busy. I’m glad to have sports and my family to keep my sanity during the difficult times.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… my new Haven hammock tent for scout outings. Nothing is better than sleeping off the ground.

MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… taking several to hike the Camino del Santiago in France, Spain, and Portugal with my family. I watched a great movie a while back called “The Way” and it first exposed me to the life changing experiences that people experience during this journey.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… to spend as much time with your kids as possible and to be involved in their activities.

Real Estate Buyer Dollars Versus Seller Dollars

Buyer Dollars

Seller Dollars

Before you cash in your home equity, you will probably need to spend some time, effort, and money getting your home sold. Herein lies the hard decisions. What to do? What not to do? These are tough questions.

Enter the concept of buyer dollars versus seller dollars. Buyer dollars are very inexpensive. Buyers make plans, move a wall here, new flooring there, and the improvements cost you, the seller, nothing. Yes, they may try to justify a less than full price offer with how much they will have to spend. But the terms are negotiable, and you really don’t care what they plan to do, and you certainly don’t want to pay for it all. Bottom line, in negotiations, it all comes down to what a buyer will pay and what a seller will take.

Seller dollars, on the other hand, are very real. They most often must come out of your pocket now, but some things can be paid out of closing. Seller dollars should translate into either more money for the house or they should resolve an issue

that makes the home less sellable or only sellable for less.

Bottom line: these are dollars you want back. Seller dollars become a part of your pricing, then they affect negotiation decisions. This is not necessarily a good thing. Most often, what we recommend is that sellers sell what they have rather than making expensive alterations in an effort to sell for more. This kind of risk is better left to investors who will admit, even as smart as they are, to only making a profit half the time.

However, every home can and should be prepared to go on the market. The yard must be cleaned up, the windows should shine, but the minute you put in wood floors you lose the buyer who wants tile. Better for them to spend buyer dollars to make it their own.

Your Revocable Trust May Increase Your FDIC Insurance Coverage Beyond $250,000

The banking industry is under fire again, with many people worried about bank failures, wondering about their own bank’s health, and their own vulnerability to losses. The FDIC insures deposits – but only up to $250,000 per deposit at each bank. If your account at a bank is over $250,000, or if you have CDs and multiple accounts exceeding $250,000, you would only be covered up to that $250,000 amount.

But wait! Your revocable living trust might help by increasing your coverage. We generally recommend that our clients who have created a revocable trust change their bank accounts and other bank deposits and products over to the name of the trust. The FDIC recognizes these accounts as held in a trust relationship and calls these trusts formal revocable trusts. The trust, as owner of these accounts, is insured for up to $250,000 for each beneficiary of the trust, as long as the beneficiaries are individuals or qualified charitable or non-profit organizations. Beneficiaries are identified in the trust, and language such as “to my descendants” is sufficient – as long as the number and names of the beneficiaries can be determined.

The FDIC examples included in its brochure, includes a depositor with a trust account who has identified five unique beneficiaries. The FDIC coverage of $250,000 per account is increased to $1,250,000 for that depositor. Quite a difference! With increased FDIC coverage using the trust, you can consolidate your

bank accounts. It makes managing your accounts during your lifetime easier, which in turn also makes it easier for your successor trustee when they step in.

The revocable living trust is the foundation for most estate plans prepared in my office. The trust reduces expenses and provides for a smoother administration of your estate. It not only avoids the time and expense of a probate action at your death, but it also avoids court proceedings if you are incapacitated. It’s also easy for you to use. My clients notice very little difference in how they handle their finances once they have the trust in place and their assets titled in their names as trustees.

For bank accounts, you still can deposit checks made to your name, withdraw money, and write checks. You won’t notice any difference from an account in your name, or a joint account with your spouse. With the additional FDIC insurance coverage, the revocable trust provides great peace of mind.

If you have questions about whether a trust is right for you, or if you have a trust you think might need updating, I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your specific situation and talk about the trust and how it might work for you. Health

Digestive Health and Naturopathic Medicine

In naturopathic medicine, gut health is a primary focus. Bowel movements are discussed at every visit. Are they daily and well-formed? Is there constipation or diarrhea? Is there cramping, bloating or gas? These are all common symptoms that patients experience with a digestive disruption. It is healthy to have at least one well-formed bowel movement each day and it is not normal to experience discomfort.

Many patients have some sort of digestive symptom, and the goal is to identify the root cause, regulate bowel movements, eliminate discomfort, and support healthy digestion and absorption of nutrients. This is how we start.

FOOD

Food is one of the most common causes of inflammation in the digestive system. We focus on the diet in detail to find any foods that could be aggravating the system. Common foods that upset the digestion are wheat, diary, and eggs as well as artificial sweeteners and other food additives. We can further investigate specific foods with a food sensitivity test, specifically IgG sensitivity testing. When we identify the foods that could be causing some upset, we can eliminate them for a certain period of time, heal the gut, and then try the foods again. Sometimes it just takes a little break from those aggravating foods to heal the gut. It is like wearing a shoe that causes a blister, you have to stop wearing the shoe for a little while, let it heal and then try the shoe on again.

IMBALANCED GUT FLORA

This can be a major cause of digestive symptoms. Our gut requires a harmonious balance of bacteria. Stress, food sensitivities, and other health conditions can all disrupt the flora and lead to a change in digestion. Prolonged or frequent use of antibiotics can also affect gut health and lead to yeast and/ or bacterial overgrowth. It is important to support the gut during and after any antibiotic use to ensure that the

Breakthrough in Chronic Pain Treatment –Get Pain Relief with EPAT Shockwave erapy

Introducing the revolutionary therapy to relieve chronic pain, boost mobility and promote quick healing

Are you tired of su ering from chronic pain and fed up with relying on medications that do not o er long-lasting relief? Wanting to get back to activities with the con dence that you won’t “pay the price” later? You might be nding it hard to focus on what’s going on around you because you’re distracted by your pain.

good bacteria are replenished. We are able to identify any bacterial or yeast overgrowth with specific testing and then treat with proper probiotics and additional support that are tailored towards each patient.

OTHER UNDERLYING CAUSES

Underlying illnesses and other conditions can also affect the digestive system. Thyroid disease can have a direct effect on the digestive system causing constipation or loose/frequent stools. Autoimmune disease such as inflammatory bowel disease can also cause a disruption in the digestion and lead to symptoms of gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. Stress levels play a huge role in the digestive system, so lifestyle changes are essential as well. Certain medications can also be a culprit and are investigated if symptoms arise. Those with skin conditions such as eczema typically improve with digestive support as well.

A complete history, physical, and appropriate testing will allow us to piece together all aspects that may be affecting your digestive health. Treatment is always individualized and tailored to your specific needs.

Many people become discouraged and give up after trying massage, chiropractic, exercise, stretching, injections, acupuncture, nonspecialized PT. Even the medications don’t always seem to work, leaving you frustrated that your pain is simply unpredictable. You might have heard from friends and family that even surgery isn’t always a guaranteed way to get out of pain and back to doing what you love. What most people are missing in this case is a root cause diagnosis. When everything helps a little bit, but it’s unpredictable, you’re chasing the symptom. With an accurate root cause diagnosis and a plan of attack, plus using a new technology called EPAT to address the symptom and help the tissue regenerate, people are nally experiencing lasting relief.

Physical therapy has evolved thanks to EPAT shockwave therapy – a revolutionary technique designed to alleviate various musculoskeletal conditions providing long-lasting results!

When EPAT is combined with a treatment plan directed at solving the root cause of your chronic pain, issues like foot pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain start healing quickly and stay gone for a long, long time. EPAT, or Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology, is an innovative non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that provides natural pain relief and healing to musculoskeletal conditions. is therapy uses high-frequency sound waves, which penetrate deep into the tissues to promote blood ow, regenerate damage, and relieve pain from both acute, and chronic pain conditions.

Most common areas treated include plantar fasciitis, knee pain, tendon pain, ligament pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, and back pain. If you’re struggling with any of these, you may be a good candidate for EPAT.

Here are some reasons why you should consider EPAT shockwave therapy:

• Accelerates the healing process

• Improves blood ow and circulation

• Restores mobility

• Stimulates the metabolism for tissue regeneration

• Treats the source of the pain or injury

• 91% success rate (as per clinical studies)

• Non-invasive

• No anesthesia

• No risk of infection

• No scarring

• No downtime

• Over 80% patient satisfaction

• Faster, easier healing

e treatment works by naturally boosting the body’s healing process. It has minimal or no side e ects other than mild soreness and redness around the targeted area.

For individuals who don’t want to have surgery, are tired of relying on medications, and are su ering from chronic pain, EPAT o ers an ideal solution that provides relief without the risks and side e ects associated with surgeries and medication. Whether you are dealing with a sports injury or struggling with plantar fasciitis, EPAT therapy might be the answer.

Our team of experienced therapists at e Doctors of Physical erapy have helped hundreds of clients regain their mobility, improve their quality of life, and overcome chronic pain with a root cause treatment plan and EPAT shockwave therapy.

Many of our clients have tried everything from chiropractic, acupuncture, injections, electrostim, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, and had unsuccessful surgeries. We’re able to combine EPAT with our unique “Root Cause” analysis to identify both the structures that are causing pain, and WHY they are getting damaged in the rst place.

How to x chronic pain for the long term.

So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause And without getting to the source of the problem, pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed.

Unfortunately a lot of people learn this the hard way. After addressing the root cause, one of our patients Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” e only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”

Don’t let chronic pain ruin your professional, athletic or personal life anymore; visit www. thedoctorsofpt.com to learn more about us. Email us at info@thedoctorsofpt.com and say EPAT to start the quali cation process for a complimentary consultation and nd out if EPAT therapy is right for you.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates

It’s been impressive to see how far the John Wick series has come from its low budget origins, and the newest film is the culmination of that. We’ve gone from the excellent nightclub fights and shootouts of the first film to impressive large scale brawls involving cars, guns, and swords that increasingly escalate in scenes that can go up past 30 minutes. Despite that, there’s still the knowledge that the series never forgot what made it special in the first place, be it the small-scale final action sequence or Keanu Reeves’ performance of a man who is unsure of his place beyond killing. That’s before you get to a cast of unique and diverse characters who are just as tortured, veering down that path, or are just absolute fun. The film is a true accomplishment and career high from everyone involved, and possibly the best film of the series.

I understand I may be in the minority with this opinion, but I expected more from a movie based on the “Mario Brothers” video games. It’s disheartening to see a lack of creativity in the storyline and entertainment, relying heavily on poor music choices and tiresome ironic humor. The film features a celebrity voice cast, most of whom seem to be playing themselves, with the exception of Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key, who genuinely immerse themselves in their roles. On a positive note, the animation is truly remarkable and expressive, making it one of the best I’ve seen from an Illumination film. Kudos to the animators for their incredible work! Despite the stunning visuals, the movie feels forgettable. However, it remains watchable and will undoubtedly appeal to younger audiences.

“Renfield”

Dracula’s longtime assistant, Renfield, attempts to find happiness and his own independence in modern day New Orleans.

It’s unfortunate when a horror-comedy falls short because one aspect doesn’t quite measure up to the other, and “Renfield” seems to struggle with both. The sarcastic, self-aware humor prevalent in modern entertainment, such as “Rick and Morty” (which shares a writer with “Renfield”), comes off as particularly grating here, clashing with the intended horror atmosphere. Most characters in the film are unlikable and overly quippy, including the titular character and his boss (despite commendable efforts from Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage). The action sequences also disappoint, with choppy editing and minimal impact, even when blood splatters across the screen. This lackluster action does not blend well with the harsh, unappealing colors. While there are occasional successful gags or gore moments, they are rare and not enough to sustain the entire 99-minute runtime.

to genuinely capture the essence of an underground work, but “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” achieves just that. Much of this authenticity comes from its documentary-style approach, with visuals depicting a world bathed in perpetual twilight and actors who resemble real people plucked from the streets. The film’s intensity is palpable, not only during action sequences but also in quieter, small-scale moments where a single misstep could lead to catastrophe. In a time when highbudget action movies often feel uninspired and low-stakes, this film demonstrates the remarkable impact that can be achieved with limited resources. “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” is truly an exceptional cinematic experience.

For larger family gatherings, Creekside offers more spacious units with full kitchens. And if you’re worried about leaving your furry friends at home, fret not – the cabins are pet-friendly!

“This area was made famous by author Zane Grey who wrote about the mystical wild Tonto Country,” says Creekside Co-Owner Tami Stensland. “Christopher Creek is brimming with natural beauty and is truly a destination for people who want to hear the wind in the forest, the rushing water of the pristine creek tumbling over small falls or the bugle of a Rocky Mountain Elk.”

For couples seeking a memorable and affordable wedding venue, Creekside has the answer. The newly built wedding site offers stunning views of the Mogollon Rim and Tonto National Forest and can comfortably accommodate up to 150 people on the property itself, eliminating the need to secure off-site accommodations. With a wealth of activities nearby – including stream fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking –entertaining your wedding party has never been easier or more convenient. As an added bonus, Creekside Cabins is an Instagrammer’s paradise, with countless pictureperfect spots to capture your special moments. Whether it’s a family vacation or your dream wedding, you’ll leave with a treasure trove of beautiful memories and photographs to cherish forever.

So why wait? Head over to Creekside Cabins, Tavern and Tours in the village of Christopher Creek – just 22 miles east of Payson and 10 miles west of Woods Canyon Lake – and discover for yourself what makes it the best-kept secret in Payson.
