Official Investigation Crimps Panel Supplies for U.S. Solar Industry But savvy customers can still get a good deal. By Erick O’Donnell We reported just last October about the economic rain clouds looming over the American clean energy movement as inflation threatened rising costs for solar companies and their customers. Well, when it rains, it really does pour. Now a government investigation into alleged tariff circumvention by Chinese panel manufacturers is inflicting severe supply disruptions on American solar installers, threatening to curtail the nation’s clean energy transition. A survey of 200 American solar companies by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) found that 74 percent have had orders canceled in the wake of the investigation. “This is the biggest threat I’ve seen in my 15 years in the solar industry,” said John Smirnow, general counsel and chief marketing strategist for the SEIA. The inquiry was launched by the Department of Commerce in response to a complaint filed in February by Auxin Solar, which alleged that various panel exporters in Southeast Asian countries were owned by Chinese companies and were being used to bypass tariffs set up by the Trump administration. Val Berechet, co-founder and CEO of Arizona-based installer SunSolar Solutions, predicted that some companies will go out of business after being caught unprepared. A reliable source told Berechet that a “major manufacturer” had just canceled a 100-megawatt order of panels and raised prices 20 percent on its remaining stock. The price of a certain panel used by SunSolar has gone up 62 percent since last April. “It’s insane,” Berechet said. Not that he’s sweating it. SunSolar has spent the past few months carefully preparing to thrive in an environment marked by severe

disruption, leveraging long-established industry relationships to boost the company’s panel inventory and thereby build a buffer against supply shocks, Berechet said. The company is also taking care not to commit to projects for which the availability of materials is not certain, he said. “From our end, it’s all about being informed and being on top of it,” Berechet said. “It’s about having plans so we can deliver to customers.” “I do feel confident in our ability to get through this challenging time,” he added. Berechet foresees severe trouble for companies that are not as prepared as SunSolar. “People who are not prepared, not on top of this, will absolutely be blindsided,” he said. For homeowners thinking about going solar, the recent supply shock only increases the urgency of the decision. Panel prices have been steadily creeping up because of general supply-chain issues, and Berechet predicts significant and durable increases in ultimate project costs. For example, a rooftop-installation project making use of the panels that cost 62 percent more this year will ultimately cost the customer about 20 percent more than before. The rush by customers to take advantage of today’s lower prices will only jack up the pressure on stragglers to commit. “There’s a ton of demand and limited supply,” Berechet said. “And demand will only increase, given this.” Even in these times of economic and political volatility, time can be on your side—if you’re willing to take action. SunSolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Call us today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Arizona Restaurant Week Delights Diners with 10 Days of Culinary Exploration Popular Dining Event Is Back From May 20-29 By Molly Cerreta Smith Photos Courtesy of Timothy Fox Photography LET THE DINING BEGIN! The Arizona Restaurant Association’s most anticipated event of the season is almost here. The 2022 Spring Arizona Restaurant Week, 10 days of dining deliciousness, begins Friday, May 20 and runs through Sunday, May 29. During this event, diners can enjoy incredible deals and new creative menus at some of the hottest fine dining establishments in the state as well as at restaurants that remain among the Valley’s best hidden gems. Spring Arizona Restaurant Week (ARW) offers specific three-course menus at participating restaurants throughout the state. During this time, many chefs take the opportunity to create specialty dishes that aren’t generally on their menu, using seasonal and hard-to-find or on-trend ingredients to provide guests with a truly memorable dining experience. As the restaurant industry continues to navigate labor shortages, cost increases

and limited supplies, the Arizona Restaurant Association added an additional price point last year to help offset the rising industry costs. The three price points still present the state’s dining community with the most delicious way to explore Arizona’s culinary scene for a great deal while allowing restaurants greater range to provide diners with an even more elevated dining experience. The three price points on ARW menus are $33, $44 or $55 per person, and even per couple in some instances. Restaurants also may opt to feature wine pairings for each course at an additional cost. With the various price points and wine pairing options, there are many ways that diners can customize their ARW experiences to suit their preferences. “Arizona Restaurant Week serves as a time to showcase the state’s culinary breadth and highlight the talent of chefdriven establishments while giving diners an opportunity to try new menus for a great deal,” says Arizona Restaurant Association President and CEO Steve

Chucri. “With dine-in and take-out options and a variety of dining choices including high-end and independently owned best-kept secrets, we encourage diners to use Arizona Restaurant Week as an opportunity to support the industry while enjoying an incredible meal.” The Arizona Restaurant Association (ARA) has been presenting Arizona Restaurant Week for more than 15 years. As an advocate for the hospitality industry, the ARA works diligently to support the industry and present opportunities to help promote the restaurants around the state that contribute vibrantly to the state’s economy as well as its diverse dining scene. Since COVID-19 and the subsequent labor, food and supply shortages, rising prices and massive inflation, the restaurant industry has faced multiple challenges over the past few years. The ARA has responded quickly to each challenge, modifying Arizona Restaurant Week to provide take-out options at the height of restaurant dine-

in closures and evolving the program again with additional price points to help restaurants continue to provide an incredible dining experience while recognizing the vast price hikes they are facing. That’s why it’s more important than ever for the local dining community and the culinary curious to get out and support Arizona’s restaurants. And ARW provides an ideal opportunity to get a true taste of each restaurant at a significant discount. “Throughout the pandemic, the state’s culinary community continued to show support in any way they could, even in modified ways,” says Chucri. “Our industry could not continue without the support of our loyal diners; we are so grateful for everyone that dines out and joins us during Arizona Restaurant Week.” A complete list of Spring Arizona Restaurant Week participants and their menus is available on at arizonarestaurantweek.com.

The community-based brand prides itself on serving 100% all-natural foods and giving back at least 1% of sales to the local community. To support local businesses, Birdcall has collaborated with State Forty Eight on co-branded shirts that will be available for purchase in-store for $15, where $1 from each t-shirt sold benefits the State Forty Eight Foundation. The restaurant has also formed a relationship with Chaparral High School to show support for the Firebirds and its students by sponsoring several school events, including prom and senior sunset. To bring a taste of the Valley to the restaurant, Birdcall has also partnered with Phoenix-based Noble Bakery to locally source fresh buns for each sandwich, as well as breweries like SanTan Brewing Co and Greenwood Brewing. Birdcall plans to open ten restaurants in the next three years in the Phoenix metro area. A second Arizona Birdcall restaurant is slated to open in San Tan Village in the fall of 2022, with a third location slated to open in Phoenix in late 2022. City News Help Scottsdale’s Most Vulnerable Residents Beat the Heat This Summer By Ethan Kispert

EVERY SUMMER, THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE BRINGS RELIEF TO LOW INCOME, HOMEBOUND AND ISOLATED SENIORS THROUGH ITS BEAT THE HEAT PROGRAM. Like in years past, the city is reaching out to local community members to help it continue to support some of Scottsdale’s most vulnerable residents. “We just want to make sure that they’re healthy and that they have enough items for the summertime,” says Anya Wright, a human services representative at the Via Linda Senior Center. To help, locals can donate a range of items. Accepted Items: • Reusable water bottles • Drinks (bottled water, Ensure/Boost regular and sugarfree, Gatorade, Propel) • Nutritional supplements • Healthy store-bought snacks that are individually wrapped (pretzels, raisins, crackers, trail mix, protein bars) • Toilet paper • Tissue • Paper towels • Shampoo • Conditioner • Bodywash • Toothbrushes • Toothpaste

• Soap • Hand sanitizer • Small fans • Chapstick • Deodorant • Lotion • Sunscreen • Book of forever stamps • $35 Fry’s gift cards

Any senior who enrolls in the program will be visited by the city’s human services staff that will provide them with a care package. Each package will consist of a reusable bag, drinks, snacks, toiletries, note pads, pens, a book of stamps, and a $35 Fry’s gift card. Staff with the city of Scottsdale will coordinate getting the donations to whoever needs them and assisting them with other needs that may arise. “Your donation will truly make a difference that has a lasting impact,” says Jennifer Murphy, a human services supervisor with the city of Scottsdale. “Items donated are delivered by caring staff that complete a brief assessment to determine any additional needs. The smiles of appreciation from our senior participants are priceless.” Anyone who wishes to come and drop a donation off can go to the Via Linda Senior Center, located at 10440 E. Via

Linda. The drop-off center will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and items will be accepted through May 27. Shining the light of love on both the good and the bad of that process, Severson shares her soul quest and how she learned to navigate her own enoughness. With honesty, tenderness, and vulnerability, she taps into a powerful shared reality, illuminating the experiences so many women go through as they, too, struggle to define success and self-love. “Unapologetically Enough” is a raw, relatable story of what happens when one

woman stops questioning everything about herself and her life and starts questioning what her life could be like if she accepted herself as enough. Wildland Fire Fuel Mitigation Continues in North Scottsdale Information and Photo Courtesy of the Scottsdale Fire Department AS THE WILDFIRE SEASON APPROACHES, THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS CONTINUING FIRE/FUEL MITIGATION PROJECTS IN AND AROUND THE NORTH SCOTTSDALE AREA. The city continues to work in cooperation with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, Arizona State Land Department, and the U.S.D.A. Tonto National Forest. Scottsdale Preserve and Scottsdale Fire Department staff are also coordinating with adjacent communities, Maricopa County, adjacent cities, and other Scottsdale City departments in these efforts, including Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Sanitation, and Field Services. The purpose of this work is to reduce fire/fuels in strategically targeted areas to reduce the threat of wildfires starting, and to provide defensible spaces that can slow the spread of a fire. Attention is being focused along roadway edges in and around the Preserve, School Trust Lands, and key alignments within the Preserve that function as fuel breaks to stop or slow the forward movement of potential wildfires. Summer Water Safety STAY COOL AND SAFE WITH THESE HELPFUL TIPS

By Jill Frier

S

ummer is fast approaching and, unfortunately for the Valley of the Sun, so is accidental drowning season. City resources, state agencies, and first responders come out in droves this time of year cautioning parents to “Watch Your Kids Around Water.” Sadly, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age four in Arizona. While most children drown in their own pools, other water sources can also be dangerous, including lakes, canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs, and ponds. Anyone who cares for children should be aware of the potential dangers and possible tragedies of drowning. Here are some safety tips to help you keep your kids safe around water as the weather warms up and pools become more attractive to children everywhere. PREVENTING DROWNING In addition to teaching kids how to swim, the best way to prevent drowning is to watch kids when they are in or around water – without distractions. Put the cell phone or the iPad down and be sure to always keep children within reach of an adult. Never leave a child alone around a

water source. It only takes two inches of water and a few seconds to drown. OTHER WAYS TO PREVENT DROWNING: • Use an approved barrier to separate the pool from the house. • Keep large objects that kids can climb on, like tables, chairs, large toys, or ladders away from pool fences. • Teach your children to always ask for permission to go near the water so they develop quality water safety habits at an early age. • Don’t allow kids to play in the pool area and don’t store toys near the pool. • Don’t allow anyone to swim alone – always swim with a buddy. • Drink plenty of water, even if you aren’t thirsty, and avoid alcohol to prevent dehydration. • Keep life-saving devices like hooks, poles, or flotation devices near the pool and readily available. • Always have a designated child watcher whenever kids are near a pool or water source and take the kids with you when you leave the area. • If a child is missing, check the water first because every second counts to prevent drowning.

• Make sure everyone in your family, children and adults, learn to swim. • Don’t forget the non-pool areas, too. Be sure to empty all tubs, buckets, containers, and kiddie pools immediately after you use them. Store containers upside down so they don’t collect water and keep toilet lids shut and doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed.

Plan ahead and prepare yourself to know what to do in an emergency, because learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a life.

HELPING SOMEONE IN DANGER Do you know what to do in an emergency? Accidents are unexpected, which is why it is always a good idea to learn CPR and basic water rescue skills. You never know when you may need to step in and save someone’s life, whether a child or an adult. THE MAIN STEPS TO REMEMBER IF YOU FIND SOMEONE IN TROUBLE IN A WATER EMERGENCY ARE: 1. Yell for help and pull the person out of the water. 2. Call 9-1-1 immediately and stay on the line with the operator for instructions. 3. Begin CPR, if you know it. 4. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 9-1-1 operator until help arrives.

LEARNING TO SWIM One of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe around water is to teach them to swim. Swimming lessons not only teach kids how to swim when they are in the water, they also teach kids to respect the potential dangers of the water and the rules for being safe around a pool. Get your kids familiar with water, comfortable with the rules for a swimming pool, and respectful of the dangers that come with drowning. There are many options for swimming lessons and a range of prices, times, and locations. You can sign them up for private or group swimming lessons at one of the many swim schools in town or go to a city pool or nonprofit community center. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy our almost year-round sunshine by the swimming pool, lake, or pond. Water is a great way to cool off and have fun but take steps to be safe and prevent accidents or drowning while you splash around.

At LIFE Early Learning Center, our curriculum is designed to equip our students to thrive in today’s world, while simultaneously preparing them to be the Leaders of Tomorrow.

WYMAN PLUMBING & MECHANICAL

By Michelle Talsma Everson

G

rowing up, Tamra Wyman worked for her parents’ small business—and she loved it. When she began her first official job outside of her family’s business, it was working at a plumbing supply store. “Little did I know I’d marry a plumber and own a plumbing company,” she says with a laugh. In 2016, she and her husband Doug Wyman opened Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical (WPM) and since then their locally-owned, small family business has continued to grow—providing quality service and plumbing and repair expertise to homes and businesses across the Valley and Scottsdale.

“I worked for my parents’ online retail business and missed running a business,” Tamra shares. “Then, with Doug being a plumber for over 20 years, we realized that we had the opportunity to start our own business. At Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical, I manage the office and business logistics, and because of his expertise, Doug is the service manager. When we opened our business, we had to think big and give it 100%. We hit the ground running hard and with confidence, because for us, there’s no other way to do it.” SCOTTSDALE’S GO-TO PLUMBING AND APPLIANCE REPAIR EXPERTS Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical’s plumbers and appliance repair team proudly serve residential and commercial clients. They are a state-licensed, bonded, and insured plumbing service and appliance repair company. “From our office team to the service technicians, we all live in the same community and have the ambition to serve our fellow neighbors with excellence,” according to WPM. “As a local tight-knit team, our plumbers and appliance repairmen provide honest, reliable services that stand head-and-shoulders above the rest.” Tamra shares that some of the things that sets Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical apart is their high-quality customer service and being able to quote potential customers over the phone. “When we moved here from Colorado, I noticed that many plumbing and appliance repair shops wouldn’t do quotes over the phone and charged customers to come out,” she says. “But for customers’ convenience, we can quote the majority of jobs over the phone.” She also notes that customer service is a top priority, and she encourages her staff to, “Leave a job site cleaner then they found it.” PHOTO BY TAWN SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY

Tamra and Doug both share that Wyman Plumbing technicians are detailed, courteous and knowledgeable. “We are equipped with all the tools needed to get your task done efficiently, quickly and neatly,” according to WPM. “Our experienced team will show up in service vehicles that are fully equipped with the latest technology in plumbing or appliance repair…We are confident you will not find better qualified, down-to-earth plumbers in all of Arizona.” myhyperlocalnews.com

“All of our service technicians wear booties and, of course, clean up after themselves,” Tamra says. “It’s all about leaving local customers with that wow factor.” She adds that the company replies quickly to customers’ needs, including plumbing emergencies. Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical’s available services include: the installation and repair of water heaters, water softeners, reverse osmosis, garbage disposals, gas lines, and faucet, toilet, and pressure reducing valves (PRV). Other services include fixing drain issues, drain cleans, toilet problems, water main repairs, broken pipes, septic/sewer lines, leak detection, re-pipes, plumbing camera inspection, rooter services, and more commercial or residential plumbing offerings. JUST ADDED: APPLIANCE REPAIR SERVICES New to their line-up is their appliance repair services department. Tamra explains that offering these services came as a natural extension of their alreadyestablished plumbing and repair services. “We’d get calls asking us to install washers, dryers, dishwashers, you name it,” she says. “So, knowing there’s the demand, we now have appliance installation experts on staff who take these calls. It’s often best to have us do them anyway, because they hook up to your plumbing system, and we have expertise in both appliance repair and plumbing.”

This service includes commercial appliances for everything from laundromats to restaurants. Another popular service is gas conversion for appliances. Additionally, WPM works on a lot of brand names other companies won’t, such as Sub-Zero, Wolf, Küppersbusch, and Miele. COMMUNITY MATTERS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING LOCAL In addition to offering quality service at fair prices to their neighbors, Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical is also invested in the community. “We very much love giving back to our customers and those who have supported us,” Tamra shares. “Some of our customers’ causes that we have donated to include North Valley Christian Academy, a variety of teams and clubs at local high schools, and area nonprofits. One of our plumbing technicians is very passionate about IMCA Hobby Stock Racing and we recently sponsored his team, Cheetah Racing.” Added to running a business together, Doug and Tamra are busy parents with four children, ranging in ages from 5 to 19. Their eldest, Eric, works for the family business as a plumbing technician. As the owner of a local, family-run business, Doug emphasizes that supporting local businesses strengthens the community and economy.

“We urge residents to stay local with the small business owners and the licensed contractors who spent the time acquiring experience and expanding knowledge in their trade,” he says. “The state of Arizona requires licensed contractors to meet experience and examination requirements. Each licensed contractor is also required by the state of Arizona to maintain a bond and insurance coverage to protect homeowners from unnecessary liability.” Looking to the future, Tamra and Doug share that they plan to work hard on continued success and growth. “We will continue to grow new divisions based on customer demand, like we did with the appliance repair services,” Tamra says. “Now that we repair appliances too in addition to plumbing and mechanical, we are truly your one-stop shop. We’d like to thank the community for their support, and we will continue to grow and give back as we do. There’s nothing more important than supporting our local community and being able to make it a better place.” To learn more about Wyman Plumbing & Mechanical, visit wyman-services.com or call 623-551-6688. MAY APPLIANCE REPAIR DEALS This month, in celebration of launching their appliance repair department, WPM is offering an Annual Reverse Osmosis Filter Change Package for $150. This includes changing of standard R.O. system filters, re-pressurizing of R.O. tank, R.O. membrane test, overall R.O. system check, standard tank water heater flush, a water pressure check on the house, toilet leak detection tests, and water softener check with water hardness test.

And, for those looking to install a new water heater, WPM is offering a Navien Tankless Water Heater with Installation for $4,295 (normally $4,795). This includes all parts, materials and labor for standard installation and removal/disposal of old unit. Features include: a built-in recirculation pump for hot water on demand, endless hot water with ComfortFlow technology, eco-friendly pre-mixed burners reducing emissions, incredible efficiency with secondary heat exchanger, and tremendous durability with stainless steel construction. myhyperlocalnews.com

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Brian Yampolsky.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “Thunder Road,” or by anything Bruce Springsteen.

I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 30 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… This is where my family lives – my wife, kids, Bentley (my 3-year-old English bulldog), mom and sister. Wherever my family is and whatever they’re doing is where I want to be. After growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, the weather here is also huge plus.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My grandmother. She passed away nine years ago. She showed me what unconditional love, support, a positive outlook, and kindness look like.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… Working out or going on a two-to-three-mile walk, a cup of MUD water (my alternative to coffee), a brief but consistent review of my goals for the week, and leading the finest team of mortgage pros at Orion Mortgage Corp. There is never a dull moment in the mortgage business, which is one of the reasons why I have loved it for 30 years. MY FAMILY IS… My wife Stephanie (we have been married for 30 years in October), daughter Jordan (who lives in New York), Jeremy (who works on my team at the office), Jack (graduating from Desert Mountain High School this year), and Bentley – the best pup in the world! ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… My family. Everything is better when I have my family around to share life with. Pizza and beer are close seconds. 20 • May 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My kids make me laugh every day. They are all performers, get along and love each other, and bring out the bonkers in all of us. THE PERFECT DAY… I get up at 5:30 a.m., take a threemile walk with Steph and Bentley to AJ’s for an iced tea, and enjoy the sunshine for about an hour while letting people give love to Bentley. Then, I’d grab lunch at Chula Seafood (best in town), maybe a movie, and then dinner with my family. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… The Giving Group AZ is a local nonprofit I started in 2017. What makes it special is the membership of 100 amazing people. They all donate $100 per quarter and then four members are randomly selected to nominate their favorite nonprofit to be in the running for the big donation. After the four nonprofits present their pitch,

the group votes on which local nonprofit will receive our $10,000 donation. It’s been a fantastic experience over the last five years— we love learning about so many local nonprofits and the great work they do in our community. We want to grow the group to 150 members this year so that we can give more money to more local nonprofits. Those interested in joining us can find out more at tggaz.org. MY LIFE IS… Short. I try to remember this when I am getting stressed about the little things. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… In 2018, my wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary with a trip to Italy. We had such a blast! Fantastic food, walking every day, we met some great friends from other parts of the world, and the pasta was amazing. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Going back to Italy, visiting other cities, hopefully while I could catch Springsteen in concert there. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... There is a solution to every problem. Even if you don’t know the solution right now, it’s out there, so go find it. myhyperlocalnews.com

NATIONAL SKIN CANCER AND MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH Information Courtesy of Justin Moser, M.D. Did you know that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined? You might think it’s unlikely to affect you until you’re older, but one specific type of skin cancer – melanoma – is one of the most common cancers you’ll find even among young adults. Melanoma also accounts for a large majority of skin cancer deaths due to its aggressive nature.

Especially in the hot and sunny climate we enjoy here in Arizona, skin cancer and melanoma deserve our attention. The best thing you can do for your skin is wear a good SPF sunscreen (30 or greater) that protects your skin against UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). Put it on every couple of hours that you’re outside – even if it’s cloudy.

become damaged or die. Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected.

With proper care and monitoring, you can prevent skin cancer or catch it early, which lessens the chance you’ll be dealing with an advanced stage of cancer. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on your skin for anything suspicious, and why getting regular skin checks from a dermatologist is so critical.

Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. Risk factors commonly associated in older adults, such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use and obesity are now being seen in younger stroke patients, according to Lisa Ziomek, Stroke Care Coordinator at Abrazo Central Campus.

It’s recommended that you begin annual skin screenings in your 20s or 30s, but if you’re in the sun a lot or have a family history of skin cancer, you should talk to your doctor about being screened sooner. The good news is that proper screenings catch skin cancers earlier. The earlier skin cancers are treated, the higher the chance of a cure. Even with melanoma, if it’s detected early, the five-year survival rate is 99%.

More than 87 percent of strokes in the U.S. are ischemic strokes, caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital that can provide the right treatment in time.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers a simple test to act FAST if you think someone may be having a stroke: • Face – Ask the person to smile, does one side of the face droop? • Arms – Can the person raise both arms? Does one arm drift downward? • Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange? • Time – If you see any of these signs, call 911 right away. Also, note the time when the symptoms first appear, this helps health care providers determine the type of treatment needed. myhyperlocalnews.com

s doing everyday things from tying your shoes to finding a comfortable sleeping position difficult because of back pain? You may find it hard to enjoy those around you because you’re in pain. You may have already tried “everything,” but the difficulty is finding the things that will help and actually last. It seems like even things that help are only temporary fixes. Maybe you’ve started to think you just have a “bad back.” Back pain isn’t caused by a “bad back.” And it’s not fixed by stretching or surgery or painkillers. Back pain is caused by fatigued, overworked muscles that have to work overtime because your brain has stopped using your smaller stabilizing muscles to do their jobs. The problem is in the communication between your brain and your body. This is the reason so many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief–they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, back pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. So how do you fix back pain? You retrain the brain. Exercises that remind your brain which muscles to use and in what order keep the pain from returning (and getting worse). If you’re active and conventional advice like resting and “taking it easy” isn’t working for you, you don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. You’ve likely already tried many different things. Usually the list includes massage, stretching, chiropractic, and different exercises. One of my patients, Shelley, had tried everything above and was getting ready to see a surgeon because none of it lasted. Shelley told me, “Regular household tasks like mopping, vacuuming, putting sheets on the bed, etc., became things that would randomly set off my back and put me in bed for several days.” Eighty percent of back pain is reversible. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the brain has developed new ways of moving your body to protect itself after injury. After a while, these new patterns become hardwired into the brain. No matter what you do to relax the muscles, the pain will continue unless you fix the patterns your brain is using. This pattern is what CAUSES back pain. These muscles get called on to do everything, from stabilizing the skeleton to moving the body, when your body is designed to spread the burden of these tasks across a variety of muscles. When the smaller muscles aren’t doing their jobs, the brain recruits the big muscles to take on the task and they quickly become tired and overworked. The 7 Most Common “Fixes”... That Don’t Work Long Term 1. Stretching: It helps for a little bit, but the pain will keep coming back because it doesn’t address the root cause of the pain. 2. Hot-packs or hot showers: These feel good in the moment and help get blood-flow to the muscles, but are only temporary fixes. 3. Massage: It felt good for a few days but then it came back. 4. Chiropractic care: It eased the pain a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 5. Painkillers: You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds and told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. Physical Therapy: You went to a physical therapist

myhyperlocalnews.com

who put you on the same exercises everyone else with back pain gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Activities To Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your back pain worse. Lollygagging: Believe it or not, your pace matters. When you’re browsing at the mall, you sway back and forth a little bit because you’re not really using your muscles. Have you noticed that the longer you casually browse, the more your back starts to hurt until you need to take a break? Crossing Your Legs: This is a biggie. When you cross your legs, it puts pressure on your spine, rotating or bending it to the side. Ignoring It: If this strategy hasn’t worked for you up until now, you’re not getting closer to a breakthrough. Trust me, there’s no prize for persistence in this category. How to Fix Back Pain for the Long Term These days, Shelley is playing basketball with her boys again, exercising, and living her daily life without pain. After 20 years of chronic back pain, she was able to get back to the life she loved by correcting misalignment we found in her hips and re-teaching her muscles how to work (correctly) and strengthening them. After hearing the game plan to get her back to her life, she said, “It sounded so simple and made so much sense.” She said, “It was such a relief to learn that I didn’t have a lifelong condition that I just had to live with or attempt to fix with surgery as I had been told before!” Shelley said she “was skeptical of physical therapy because of what I’d heard from others’ experiences, but I was ready to try anything. From my first visit, I felt hopeful for the first time in years that I could be active again and get over my chronic back trouble.” Tips and Exercises to Crush Back Pain for Good Our special back pain report is full of tips and exercises to ease your pain and change the way your brain works for the long term so you can get back to picking up your kids, playing your sports, or just tying your shoes. A Community for Healing

EricsHouse Helps Those Touched by Suicide and Substance-related Losses By Jeremiah Sosa Photo Courtesy of EricsHouse

L

osing a child can be an unbearable pain for any parent to go through. For Marianne Gouveia, losing her son Eric James to suicide six years ago was no different. Amid her grief, Gouveia tried to look for a support system outside of her counselor that could help her get through the loss, however, she wasn’t able to find one. That is why in 2017 she decided to create EricsHouse, a local nonprofit organization that offers in-person and virtual services for people who have lost someone to alcohol, drugs, suicide, or any other form of self-harm. “For me it was necessary to find a way to turn my loss into good for others,” Gouveia says. “So now, instead of looking at my loss as a terrible, horrible thing—which of course it was and still is—I found a way to grow from my struggle. I found a way to help others and to integrate my loss into my life in a healthy way.” “Losing someone in this traumatic way comes with stigma, shame, and a different type of grief—it doesn’t just go away over time,” explains Patty Kincaid, ACC, Board Vice-Chairman at EricsHouse. “Our nonprofit

offers grief support groups and one-on-one grief companioning along with holistic services that help heal the whole person.” The EricsHouse team are all loss survivors themselves and can support clients without the judgement that often comes with these losses. Grief Companions receive over 150 hours of grief education taught by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, one of the world’s foremost grief experts. Kincaid shares that grieving parents are invited to join the Emmaus In-Person Retreat happening May 27-29. This workshop is for anyone who has lost a child, regardless of the reason or the length of time. Registration is required via the EricsHouse website. EricsHouse has multiple facets of their organization that allow not only locals to get involved, but those around the country as well. They offer virtual women and men’s support groups, as well as integrative grief care, which includes grief companioning, spiritual direction, health coaching, and reiki. With the numerous forms of healing that they offer, EricsHouse has received praise from many people that they’ve helped over the years.

“We get all kinds of wonderful feedback, and the reason for that is because we have an integrative model,” Gouveia says. “It’s not just counseling. We do breath work, energy work, and we teach grief education so people understand what it is what they’re feeling. We really give them a vocabulary to understand what they’re feeling so that they have a language when they are deep in their grief.” To learn more about EricsHouse, their multiple services, and volunteer or donation opportunities, visit ericshouse.org.

Arizona Gives Day 2022 A Success Thanks to Community Generosity

W

hile complete numbers weren’t available as of press time, preliminary estimates indicate that Arizona Gives Day 2022 is on pace for another highly successful 24-hour fundraising campaign.

During this year’s 24-hour online fundraiser, which took place April 5-6, 27,741 individuals donated $4.22 million to 955 Arizona nonprofits through the Arizona Gives website (AZGives.org). Also, 868 volunteers

from rising inflation and higher costs for everything. We know our Arizona nonprofits are also experiencing rising costs to provide key services to fellow Arizonans.”

“We are constantly overwhelmed by the deep generosity of Arizonans throughout the state in both financial terms and through their selfless willingness to volunteer their time for nonprofit programs, services and outreach,” says Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits CEO Kristen Merrifield. The Alliance manages Arizona Gives Day in collaboration with Arizona Grantmakers Forum. FirstBank, one of the nation’s largest privately held banks with a focus on “banking for good,” is the presenting sponsor. “We are deeply grateful that donors in Arizona recognized the call to action to assist all the very deserving nonprofits in very uncertain times and considering the additional challenges that people face

Since the first Arizona Gives Day in 2013, more than $34 million (and counting) has been raised for Arizona nonprofits. “Each year Arizona Gives Day brings this community together to support hundreds of deserving causes, and once again it delivered,” says Joel Johnson, FirstBank East Valley market president. “All of the nonprofits that received donations will be able to continue their respective missions thanks to everyone that donated. But an organization’s job isn’t done in one day, neither is ours. Let’s continue to bolster local nonprofits, whether that be financially or with time, and we’ll ensure Arizona remains an amazing place to live.” myhyperlocalnews.com

On the Road Again! Are you Ready for Vacation? By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

M

any of us are finally getting an opportunity to travel again, and we are more than ready! However, are you truly ready for that trip? One item you may have forgotten is to check on whether your estate plan is in order before you hit the road. Here are some thoughts on preparing your estate plan before your trip. • Get a Will, Trust and Power of Attorney in place. Have you ever gotten on a plane and thought, “I should have done my Will! What if something happens?” My clients feel great peace of mind after completing their plan. Your vacation can serve as the impetus to put a plan in place. • Update your existing estate plan. A big mistake I see in estate planning is the “set it and forget it” syndrome. All of us need to update our estate plan from time to time because change is inevitable. Are your children older now? Are your listed trustees and executors still a good choice? Check your plan to assure that you and your loved ones will be protected. • Name guardians for minor children. If you have minor children, it’s crucial to have documents appointing guardians, especially if you are traveling without them. Don’t leave this to chance, or worse, to the court to decide. Putting your choice in a legal document assures that the people you want to raise your children will do so if needed.

• Review your insurance. Check the amount of your life insurance coverage and see if it still meets your family’s needs. Consider getting long-term care insurance to help pay for the costs of long-term care (and preserve your assets for your family). • Review titles and beneficiary designations. If you have a revocable living trust and have not changed titles to property and accounts to place them in the name of the trust, now is the time to do so. If you don’t, your family will have to file a probate court proceeding. It’s also a good time to check beneficiary designations on your insurance and retirement plans. • Organize your accounts and documents. Make sure that if something happens, your documents can be easily found. Then make a list of all your assets and where they can be found, including usernames and passwords. Print a hard copy in case your computer is stolen or crashes, put it in a safe, secure place and let someone you trust know where to find it. Be sure to include on your master list any passwords that might be needed to access your computer and files. Last, but not least: have a great time! You are likely going to come back safe and sound, but there is great peace of mind when your plan is in place before you take a trip. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

ON NETFLIX

“Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood” A man recalls his childhood in 1969, which seems to be more fantastical than others. Richard Linklater uses his rotoscope animation style again, appropriate as it gives the film a feeling of a memory or a polaroid come to life. That’s the best way to sum up this movie— one long memory recount of a childhood that seems too insane to be true. It’s sort of an aimless movie, with its big selling point merely taking up less than a quarter of the film and its focus could be seen as boring or stretched out into a feature length. But there’s still enough charm from the actors to bring out the sincerity in it and of memories of a nostalgic time. And when it gets into the fantastical, it still fits and is entertaining. A nice, short ride.

IN THEATERS “Ambulance” Two brothers find themselves being chased across Los Angeles after stealing an ambulance with two hostages. A film myhyperlocalnews.com

full of pure adrenaline, “Ambulance” is Michael Bay’s strongest work in a decade. This is an empathetic piece, one that explores what happens to people forced by desperation into a terrible situation, eloquently shown in performances by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzláez. Even so, the film doesn’t forget to be the thrill ride it promised, where Bay’s kinetic and fast editing is complemented by a more unhinged performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s two hours of continuous chaos, with some of the most impressive action of Bay’s career where we feel the isolation of the ambulance while also getting the impression that the entire city is after these two. In an age where action films underdeliver on their most important aspects, this film is a real triumph.

In a movie where every character must play different versions of themselves, each actor delivers on the promise, particularly Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, who go back and forth between hilarious and heartbreaking in their performances. This is a movie where you can watch fantastic fight sequences with impeccable choreography followed by some immature humor that brings the laughs, followed by one of the most crushing sequences in a film this year that happens to be between two rocks. And somehow, it all comes together and makes for what may be the best picture of the year. It’s not often we see something like this, and everyone should experience it.

biggest sin though is that, despite its claim as a horror film, there’s no tense nature to be found and it can’t even hide behind the “slow-burn” handle. Goran Stolevski’s directing is impressive and he shows some genuine promise for future films, but as a writer, it is what causes the whole film to collapse.

MAY RELEASES MAY 6 • “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” MAY 13 • “Firestarter” (In theaters and Peacock) • “Pleasure” (Limited) MAY 20 • “Downton Abbey: A New Era” • “Men” (Limited) • “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” (Disney+) MAY 27 • “Top Gun: Maverick” • “The Bob’s Burgers Movie”

“Everything Everywhere All At Once” A woman discovers that a multiverse with several versions of her exists and she is its last hope at survival. It’s rare to see a movie that pushes every limit that film can have, and yet, here it is. This film is a symphony of colors, chaos, and love for people who are broken and keep going.

“You Won’t Be Alone” A witch travels between various bodies to see the human experience. Sometimes, you come across a film that you want to admire but can’t. “You Won’t Be Alone” starts out well, with one of the most quietly nerve-wracking scenes of the year. But after that, we experience a very dull film; one that comes off as aimless. For a film that’s all about the experience of being human, none of the bodies our lead inhabits deliver a threedimensional feeling and even the usually great Noomi Rapace seems bored.
