CITY HELP FOR SCOTTSDALE BUSINESSES THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS DOING ITS BEST TO HELP LOCAL BUSINESSES OF ALL SIZES DURING THESE UNPRECEDENTED TIMES. We’ve rounded up some recent initiatives that help Scottsdale businesses and the customers that they serve. SUPPORT SCOTTSDALE SITE OFFERS BUSINESS, RESIDENT RESOURCES The city of Scottsdale’s Tourism & Events and Economic Development departments, Experience Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered on a resource microsite to help businesses, employees, and residents navigate the COVID-19 outbreak. If you are a business owner or employee, make SupportScottsdale.com your first stop to access city, statewide and national programs to keep your doors open and Scottsdale’s workforce strong. The city is also collecting Instagram handles of businesses actively promoting offers or online shopping, as well as restaurants offering take-out, curbside or delivery, for the Shop Local and Meals To-Go pages of the site. If your business or restaurant fits these prerequisites, help support this initiative by using #supportscottsdale in your social media efforts.
SCOTTSDALE GOOD TO GO BUSINESS FINDER Scottsdale’s new interactive map puts local business information right at locals’ fingertips. The Scottsdale Good To Go Business Finder is a tool that allows users to locate open businesses. This new tool serves as a liaison between consumers and companies in terms of communicating their availability. Users can use their location to scroll through the map to see what restaurants, retail shops or hotels are open around them. “This is a great tool for both the business community and our residents to utilize now during the COVID-19 crisis when so much information is changing daily,” says Cristal Rodriguez Economic Development Marketing Manager. The Scottsdale Good To Go Business Finder was created by the City of Scottsdale’s Geographic Information Systems department. To use the tool or have your local business added to the map, visit choosescottsdale.com/media/ covid19/good-to-go. SCOTTSDALE SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE CENTER OFFERS GUIDANCE Scottsdale’s Economic Development Department has launched a new initiative aimed at assisting Scotts-
dale small businesses. The Scottsdale Small Business Assistance Center (SSBAC) will serve as the city of Scottsdale’s virtual one-stop shop for Scottsdale businesses looking for information on available business support programs and resources during the COVID-19 crisis. The SSBAC looks to assist Scottsdale businesses with questions regarding federal, and other government funding programs and connect them with critical resources. Businesses can rely on the center to provide the most up to date information on assistance programs, step-by-step guides, and useful webinars. Upon contacting the virtual center, individuals will receive an email from the SSBAC team with valuable re-
sources and a commitment that a team member will follow up directly within one business day. “Our Scottsdale businesses are working tirelessly navigating complex programs while at the same time trying to run their businesses and take care of their employees. The SSBAC is designed as a resource to get information and we look forward to helping our small businesses,” says Rob Millar, Economic Development Director. The Scottsdale Small Business Assistance Center can be reached by texting 480-312-3111, emailing business@ scottsdaleaz.gov, or by visiting ScottsdaleAz.gov and searching “Small Business Assistance Center.”
HONORHEALTH PROVIDES MEALS TO SCOTTSDALE ELDERLY THROUGH MOBILE MEAL PROGRAM COMMITTED TO THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THE COMMUNITIES, THE FOOD SERVICES TEAM AT HONORHEALTH SCOTTSDALE THOMPSON PEAK MEDICAL CENTER HAS PARTNERED WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TO HELP PROVIDE HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS MEALS TO HOMEBOUND ELDERLY NEIGHBORS. The initiative, called the Mobile
Meal Program, began back in 2015, as an attempt to develop interventions and improve nourishment for neighboring senior citizens. Studies show that providing a balanced intake of proper nutrition can support aging immune systems better, and can lead to quicker recovery times for those discharged from the hospitals, as well as reduce hospital admission rates. “As a registered dietitian, the objective of our meal service program is to work with our chef, Christine Leo, on an approved monthly menu for nutritional adequacy to ensure that seniors are receiving fresh, hot and nutritious meals,” says Melissa Schmidt, network director, clinical nutrition and food services at HonorHealth. “This not only makes eating convenient for people, but can help improve nutrition outcomes as well.”
Many factors can account for inadequate nutrition and the impact plays out in many ways. Seniors who 4 • May 2020 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
are undernourished or don’t eat enough can impact their daily health, and in cases where people are healing after a hospitalization, nourishment helps them heal faster.
The HonorHealth team preps and packages an average of 700 meals a week, which arrive hot for immediate consumption, or refrigerated for later. Community volunteers deliver the meals, making sure that residents have a hot and well-balanced meal each day. Since March, the program has cranked out an additional 100 meals a week and increased services to three area senior centers in the Scottsdale area due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We love that we’re able to provide this service to our community,” Schmidt says. “It’s so rewarding to know that some of our homebound Scottsdale neighbors are able to receive a nutritious meal from us nearly every day.” thescottsdalestandard.com

SCOTTSDALE ARTS LAUNCHES NEW VIRTUAL ARTS PROGRAMMING VIA ITS WEBSITE IN RESPONSE TO THE CLOSURES OF ITS FACILITIES DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, SCOTTSDALE ARTS HAS LAUNCHED A SERIES OF NEW VIRTUAL ARTS PROGRAMMING VIA ITS WEBSITE, SCOTTSDALEARTS.ORG, AND THE WEBSITES FOR ITS FOUR BRANCHES. Recognizing that many of its patrons and other arts lovers are now spending more time using web-based platforms to view paintings, listen to music, explore photography and experience stories, Scottsdale Arts and its team of curators, performing arts programmers, public art managers, and arts learning facilitators have developed a new arts-based blogging initiative called Scottsdale Arts Connections. “When, as humans, we are faced with crisis and catastrophe, we must turn inward and find resolve,” says Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts. “We have a choice to make: Do we panic and fend
only for ourselves, or do we find a deeper level of compassion, care more honestly for others and reflect on our fellow human beings? Most of us have lived lives relatively free from major crises, and I believe that this moment prompts us to think about how incredibly connected we all are around this globe — how extraordinarily similar our basic needs are.” Like Scottsdale Arts itself, Connections comprises four unique blogs for each of its four branches. The blogs introduce a variety of content that will include video conversations with artists, virtual exhibitions, artistic resource lists and more. Amplify is the blog for Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. It is designed to form connections with local performing artists and nationally touring performers who have appeared at the Center. It will also promote new endeavors like the Virtual Scottsdale Arts Festival, which launched on April 2 after the physical
festival in March was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) programs the Inspire blog, which cultivates a space that inspires dialogue about contemporary art through curated conversations. It will also offer artistic how-tos, in-depth looks at SMoCA’s collection and other virtual experiences. The Immerse blog from Scottsdale Public Art continues the organization’s mission to contribute to the community’s creative, cultural and economic vitality. Visitors will experience online exhibitions, digital journeys through the city of Scottsdale’s Public Art Collection and conversations with public artists and those who work behind the scenes at events like Canal Convergence. Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation uses its Spark blog to promote mental, physical and social well-being for all ages. Its blog offers online resources
for arts educators and examines new movements that have sprouted from the pandemic, like #ChalkYourWalk. It will also promote the launch of Scottsdale Arts’ first fully online exhibition, “Scottsdale Sister Cities Association: Young Artists and Authors Showcase.”
“The arts are critical in a time like this,” Wuestemann says. “It is through this higher form of expression that we rise above, develop a deeper connection to our community and communities around the globe, ask how we can do more for others and find both enlightenment and solace for ourselves. At Scottsdale Arts we are committed to bringing our community and our world closer together through Connections. We hope this program will inspire you, bring you comfort and perhaps make you smile a little in this difficult time.” The blogs for each branch of Scottsdale Arts will be collected as Scottsdale Arts Connections on the organization’s primary website at ScottsdaleArts.org/ connections.
RESOURCES FOR ABUSE VICTIMS DURING COVID-19 Compiled by Michelle Talsma Everson WHILE MANY ARE STAYING WITHIN THEIR HOMES AND SHELTERING IN PLACE DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, FOR SOME, HOME IS THE LAST PLACE THEY WANT TO BE. “Abuse is about power and control. When survivors are forced to stay in the home or in close proximity to their abuser more frequently, an abuser can use any tool to exert control over their victim, including a national health concern such as COVID-19,” according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “In a time where companies may be encouraging that their employees work remotely, and the CDC is encouraging social distancing, an abuser may take advantage of an already stressful situation to gain more control.” And, it’s not just adult victims who suffer. “The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline is headquartered here in Arizona, but it’s the child abuse hotline thescottsdalestandard.com

CELEBRATIONS HONOR LOCAL TEACHERS, 2020 GRADUATES THIS SCHOOL YEAR WILL END UNLIKE ANY OTHER BEFORE IT. But that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be memorable. At a time that families are usually marking Teacher Appreciation Week and graduations, typical celebrations will be cancelled or postponed and the future of them remain unclear. To ensure that both educators and graduates have a memorable May, Expect More Arizona, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization, is rallying the state behind two special days: • Tuesday, May 5, 2020 – Arizona Teacher Appreciation Day • Wednesday, May 20, 2020 – Arizona Graduate Recognition Day “Our teachers are amazing in normal times, but this spring has brought unique challenges,” says Christine Thompson, president and CEO of Expect More Arizona. “The sacrifices of time and emotional burden have been great as they adapted to distance learning. We want every educator in the state to feel honored.” School closures have placed new burdens on educators as they transitioned from teaching in classrooms to teaching online or through paper packets. They’re
“Graduation ceremonies are an important milestone in a student’s life, whether it’s kindergarten or a Ph.D.,” Thompson adds. “They’re a rite of passage, particularly for students who are first generation graduates, those who overcame unique burdens and those who accomplished their academic goals. The efforts shouldn’t go unnoticed.”
house with encouraging messages for grads and notes of appreciation for teachers • Orchestrate a block driveway party to celebrate graduates • Share messages of congratulations/recognition on social media using the appropriate hashtags (#AZTeachersRock and #AZClassOf2020) • Families (or graduating classes) could coordinate a virtual graduation party; create school-themed virtual backgrounds that all students can use • Make homemade yard signs or banners
To help the community rally behind local teachers and graduates, Expect More Arizona has compiled creative ways to get involved.
“We want communities to get creative,” says Thompson. “We love our teachers and we honor our graduates and we want them to know that.”
Whether it’s sharing messages of congratulations/recognition on social media or orchestrating a neighborhood parade of cars, there’s something for everyone. Expect More Arizona has even included ideas on how teachers and graduates can identify themselves. Decorating homes or cars, homemade banners or caps and gowns are just a few suggested activities.

HEALTH
TELEHEALTH TIPS CONNECTED TO COVID-19 By Dr. Anne Docimo, Chief Medical Officer, UnitedHealthcare
A
s the number of COVID-19 cases continue to mount, many Arizonans may be considering where to go for care if they develop potential symptoms. One important – yet potentially overlooked – resource is telehealth, which may enable people to connect 24/7 with a health care provider via a digital device and avoid potential exposure risks associated with in-person trips to health care facilities. Telehealth may be especially helpful as an initial option for medical advice related to COVID-19 and to help evaluate other possible health issues, as well as to assist the 20% of the U.S. population that lives in rural areas. To help people more effectively take advantage of this technology during the evolving COVID-19 situation, here are three tips to consider: • Identify Available Resources: To find telehealth resources, check with your care provider group, health benefit plan or employer. Nearly nine out of 10 employers offer telehealth visits to their employees, as do many Medicare and Medicaid health plans (in some cases by telephone), and 76% of hospitals connect patients and care providers using video or other technology. In some cases, people can access telehealth visits without cost sharing. Since the outbreak emerged, some health plans are now encouraging patients to use telephone or live videoconferencing (if available) to connect people with local network medical providers, waiving all cost sharing for COVID-19 related visits. This is especially important for people with certain complex conditions, such as diabetes or Parkinson’s disease, as it may enable them to “see” their own physician for acute or follow-up care related to their condition and help avoid potential exposure to the coronavirus during an in-person visit. • Understand Likely Next Steps: During a telehealth visit, care providers can give general medical advice to evaluate possible COVID-19 symptoms (fever, dry cough or difficulty breathing). While diagnostic testing services are not available through a telehealth
visit to help confirm a diagnosis for COVID-19 (if needed), care providers can help guide patients to a local care provider or public health authority for testing and follow-up care. Making these connections may help people take the appropriate steps in advance of an in-person test, which may help reduce the risk of your exposure and possible exposure to other patients and health care providers. For other illnesses (not COVID-19 related) that are treatable with medications, telehealth care providers can write prescriptions and discuss how to obtain them safely, such as using medication home delivery or drive-thru pickup at a local pharmacy. Due to the COVID-19 situation, it is important to note that people may anticipate potential wait times, as some care providers offering telehealth may be currently experiencing a surge in appointments. • Access Other Health Services: While elective health care procedures may be delayed to help enable care providers to focus on COVID-19 cases, telehealth may help people more effectively manage other health issues without the need to go out and risk potential exposure to the virus. Telehealth can help address myriad medical issues, including allergies, pinkeye, fevers, rashes and the regular flu. In addition, so much time at home can also contribute to behavioral health issues, so people should consider telehealth as a resource to connect with a qualified psychiatrist or psychologist. Importantly, people who experience a significant or serious medical issue should go to the emergency room. By considering these tips, people in Arizona may be able to more effectively use telehealth resources to help stay safe during these challenging times. thescottsdalestandard.com
HEALTH
IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
D
ue to our ever-changing health situation, now more than ever, we must protect and enhance our immune system. Our immune system can be hindered by preexisting illnesses, inflammation, stress, diet and nutrient deficiencies. There are simple ways to enhance your immunity to keep you and your family healthy during the entire year. SLEEP Sleep is extremely important for the immune system and it is often sacrificed when we are busy with everyday life. I encourage at least eight hours or more of sleep per night. I also suggest eliminating electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed. If you need to be on electronic devices, it is a good idea to invest in a pair of blue light blocking glasses to help block the stimulatory effects the light has on your brain. Find a healthy sleep routine for you and your family to ensure restful sleep. DIET/NUTRITION Food can be a major source of inflammation or anti-inflammation depending on what you eat. I recommend fueling your body with nutrient dense food such as colorful fruits and vegetables. These colorful foods are high in antioxidants to help the strengthen immunity and provide proper nutritional support. Balanced meals, plenty of water and minimal processed foods are all excellent ways to enhance the immune system. Sugar can directly inhibit immunity and increase inflammation, so I always recommend low sugar diets, especially when we are trying to protect the immune system. EXERCISE/STRESS Exercise can directly increase immunity by increasing circulation and stimulating immune cells. Regular, daily activity when you are not sick is essential for the immune system. Exercise can also help us relieve stress. Stress has a negative impact on the immune system and directly decreases our immune response. Although it can thescottsdalestandard.com
difficult to eliminate stressful events in our life, it is important to learn how to properly manage the stress to keep us healthy.
NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES Nutrient deficiencies are common and can play a big role on how our immune system responds to illnesses. Common deficiencies I typically see are Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Zinc and Vitamin C. It is important to discuss this with your physician or have certain nutrient levels checked. A healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables can help support nutrient deficiencies along with appropriate supplementation. GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM SUPPORT Our digestive system is directly correlated with our immune system. Constipation, diarrhea, gas and bloating can all decrease overall immunity. Finding the underlying causes of these symptoms is the first step to decreasing inflammation and supporting the immune system. A high-quality probiotic supplement can be helpful to restore and balance beneficial bacteria in the gastrointestinal system once the underlying cause of any disruption is identified and supported. Food sensitivities and/or food allergies can also increase inflammation in the gut and cause decreased immunity and should be avoided.

COVER STORY
MARKET VOLATILITY By Renee A. Hanson, Private Wealth Advisor Affinity Wealth Advisory Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC
T
he exhilarating anticipation of ticking up the roller coaster is quickly followed by the screams of the downward spiral to its eventual stop. We know the ride, yet we will stay the course because we know the ride will end – not just because we are locked in our seats for the duration. Understanding the outcome helps us tolerate the ride, and even enjoy most of it. But if you add uncertainty, the ride has a different feeling. No matter how often you tell yourself the ride will end, the uncertainty creates emotions. As an investor you may read about the ups and downs of the stock market and it may feel like a roller coaster. History shows us that previous market corrections have ended. Yet even armed with the data, your emotions seem to contradict your good judgement. This internal conflict may cause you to flip day to day from staying the course and ignoring uncertainty or selling off to reduce the risk. If we look at historical charts of the markets, we can project ahead to presume the outcome of the current correction. These rational thoughts of historical data somehow still may not communicate calm to the heart and stomach. Big market moves may seem less tolerable and there is no locking bar to keep us in place. The choice is ever constant - stay the course or stop the uneasiness. Will data or emotions rule your decision? This is volatility. Volatility is a statistical measure of
standard deviation or dispersion of returns. What it means to you is the experience of the daily fluctuations of your holdings or your account balance. It creates emotions as we see what has happened and we project the uncertainty in our thoughts of what is yet to come. Did you know that the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) created a volatility index (VIX), which is a measurement of the markets expected future volatility? Does your financial advisor discuss volatility with you and prepare you for market corrections? To you, market volatility may be very strong emotions of the threat of losing something important to you. Money helps provide a lifestyle and sense of security, which is important to most of us. When you feel threatened by the risk of reduced purchasing power or the ability to protect those people or things important to you, the feeling is real. In the world of investments, volatility may challenge one’s ability to accept risk or tolerate the volatility. It is important to understand one’s own risk tolerance to identify how much to accept or how much risk to avoid. A common practice before developing an investment portfolio is to quantify your risk by completing a risk questionnaire or risk quiz to determine your personal risk tolerance. Your personal risk tolerance is the amount of volatility you are willing to accept. Market volatility as we have recently experienced may cause you to rethink what you are truly willing to accept in relation to risk. A word of caution – risk tolerance should not be tied to short-term experiences or emotions. Risk tolerance is a representation of your willingness to accept risk, or volatility. During periods

of volatility, some are inclined to second-guess their risk tolerance. Financial experts encourage investors to make long-term decisions not market cycle decisions. If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act. Time in the market has historically offered greater success than timing the markets. What you may not know is that risk is something you can control. How? By aligning your values, goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon to develop a riskmitigated portfolio that is reflective of these in order to reduce your exposure to volatility. Diversification – not having all your eggs in one basket - can help mitigate risk. What is diversification though? Is diversification having accounts at different institutions? Or is it having several managers? Or is diversification having different asset classes for asset allocation? At the highest-level, diversification begins with a mix of stocks and bonds. A moderate investor, let’s call them Ed and Joan, may decide that a 50/50 allocation suits their risk tolerance, provides adequate return to maintain their lifestyle, and helps them stay aligned to their values (family, security, health, spirituality, and autonomy). In theory, having one stock and one bond would meet the 50/50 allocation. But common sense says that’s not enough “eggs.” To diversify the bonds, Ed and Joan may purchase Treasuries, Corporates, Municipals, or Emerging Market debt, to name a few. To diversify stocks, they may purchase Large Capitalized companies (big companies), Mid Cap, Small thescottsdalestandard.com
COVER STORY
Cap, Foreign, or Emerging Markets for example. In addition, Ed and Joan may be interested in holding companies in different industries or sectors such as financials, utilities, healthcare, technology, healthcare, to name a few for further diversification.
“
Returning to the questions of appropriate diversification, it is not the number of institutions, because if
can help you diversify in a meaningful way. In addition, an adequate cash reserve can help you maintain the integrity of your well-diversified portfolio to ride through market corrections.
Cash reserves are meant to handle emergencies and, during your distribution phase of life, to provide comfort in knowing you won’t need to sell during downturns to meet your living needs. Being prepared for market corrections (there will be another one) can help you remember what is important to you and maintain your strategy for financial comfort during market volatility.
If you find yourself always changing your risk to suit conditions, you are likely not investing toward your goals. You are allowing your emotions to act.
each institution is doing the same thing, there is no diversification. As you can see, this also explains why simply using different managers may not meet your diversification needs. If they are all managing to a similar style, they are all doing the same thing just in different locations. What does this mean to you? Having a clear understanding of what your money is meant to do for you
”
When thinking about risk acceptance consider what your goals are and what is important to you. Align those with your risk tolerance. As you look at managing your fears volatility, keep in mind that mindset can play an important role in your investment ride. Find a trusted financial advisor who can balance emotional responses to market conditions, current events, and personal life changes with knowledge of past market responses and ways to manage risks. This will
help keep you focused on your long-term goals with increased confidence of success. AVOIDING THE PAIN OF PROBATE
By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
P
robate is a court proceeding used to settle the estate of someone who has no will. However, a person that has a will may also end up in probate court. That’s because a will doesn’t transfer a person’s assets to his or her heirs automatically – it only asks the court to appoint your executor to handle your estate and tells your executor how to distribute your estate. Probate is time consuming and expensive for a personal representative or executor. It can be an agonizing and long, drawn out procedure. But it is avoidable – with the right estate planning tools, and specifically with the Revocable Living Trust. On your death, your heirs must settle your estate, and unless you have the right plan in place, that may mean going to court to file probate. Probate can be very burdensome for the person you have chosen to take care of your affairs (called the personal representative in Arizona, but similar to the executor, as it’s named in many states). So what should you do if you want to avoid court and make things easier on those who will wrap up your estate? The best way to avoid probate is to use a Revocable Living Trust for your estate planning. A trust isn’t just for the wealthy. Everyday people who want to simplify their affairs after death can do so with a trust. In addition to avoiding
thescottsdalestandard.com
court on your death, it can avoid court proceedings when you are alive and can no longer manage your affairs because of incapacity. In the trust, you name the person who will step in to manage your trust (your successor trustee), and when you are incapacitated, or at your death, your successor steps in to manage the trust. Another reason many want to avoid probate is that it’s a public proceeding. I didn’t realize just how public and how easy it was to get information until I asked my administrative assistant to check on a case. A few minute later he came in and said, “Since it was only $2, I went ahead and got a copy of the will. The clerk will email it to me later today.” Wow. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want people to be able to get information about my affairs that easily!
In many cases, not only is the will public, but a list of assets and the appraised amount must also be filed. If maintaining your privacy and that of your heirs is important to you, you want to avoid probate with a Revocable Living Trust.

irst, use a REALTOR® – Now, more than ever, your agent plays a vital role in your next home search. The best news is that your agent is paid by the eventual seller. You don’t pay a dime. GO DIGITAL Before you physically go out to see homes for sale, you can view homes that meet your criteria online. Your agent can do many things to facilitate your online search. Your agent can set you up on an automatic MLS feed so that you’re alerted to any homes meeting your criteria when they come on the market. When you narrow your search to a manageable number of homes, your agent can “preview” them for you. This previewing can include a video chat from the property with an opportunity to see features in real time. Many homes have videos or virtual tours that put you there digitally.
CROSSWORD SOLUTION FROM PAGE 2
All these options can narrow things down, but ultimately, you will want to tour the property in-person.

For physical showings, an agent can facilitate your seeing any home on the market and your agent can help protect you in these pandemic times. Your agent will do all the touching – the key, the doorknobs, light switches. In the case of an occupied home, your agent will deal with the sellers to arrange for their absence or orchestrate physical distancing. Handshakes are a thing of the past. Meet your agent at the property or, for multiple properties, follow in your own car. Be sure to discuss these procedures and precautions with your agent prior to your first home visit. Put together your own home viewing
kit. Include a bar of soap or bottle of liquid soap. You can always wash your hands at the kitchen sink as you view the home. Remember to bring your own towel or paper towels. Carry hand sanitizer for times when handwashing is inconvenient. Wear a mask and disposable gloves. This protects others as well as yourself. GO PAPERLESS While everything in real estate should be in writing, you don’t have to put pen to paper, type it up, or even print documents out. Digital records are easy to create, easy to store and easy to share.
Use Texting. Like a running conversation, texting is time stamped and can include photos. Use Email. More than a conversation, email can include attachments, photos, and documents. Use Video. You can video conference with your lender, your agent, your title company, or everyone at once via video conferencing software. FaceTime or Skype is great for oneon-one, face-to-face communication. Use DocuSign. All the forms necessary to complete a real estate transaction reside in DocuSign. It is easy, convenient, and transferrable via email. You can buy or sell your next home right on your phone or laptop. Your REALTOR® can walk you through these new technologies. Who knows, maybe your next home purchase will happen without even leaving your favorite chair. HOW TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF CORONAVIRUS IN YOUR VEHICLE By NuVinAir
W
hile the world seems to be spinning out of control around us, it is time we take back ownership of those things that are within our power to control. Since so many of us are now working from and spending more time at home, we can make sure our environment is as healthy as we can make it, especially in our vehicles.
Experts have now determined that coronavirus can remain active on plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours, and we certainly know that our vehicles are made up of plenty of those surfaces. The good news is that the virus can be effectively inactivated if the surfaces are properly cleaned. VEHICLE HOTSPOTS Kelly Blue Book suggests that car owners, dealerships, rental car companies and ride share entities use hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes to wipe down the interior of a vehicle and any other area that could be considered a high-touch area such as steering wheels, door handles, control buttons, seat belts, mirrors and radios. However, even if used correctly and frequently, these wipes are normally unable to reach far enough into porous surfaces such as upholstery and nooks and crannies to

address the contaminants embedded in those materials and areas. The contaminants embedded in hard-to-reach areas can contribute to the residual less-than-clean smell of the vehicle. PRODUCTS TO USE AND AVOID Alcohol solutions that contain at least 70 percent alcohol are effective against coronavirus, according to the CDC. Whatever you do, don’t use bleach or hydrogen peroxide on the inside of your car, as they will likely damage your car’s upholstery. Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners on car touch screens, as they can damage their anti-glare coating.
ASK YOUR DEALERSHIP OR LOCAL AUTO SERVICE-RELATED BUSINESS Check with your local dealership, auto detailer, service center or car wash to see if they are offering any type of healthy vehicle program or proprietary product line that is designed to clean both the air and surfaces inside your vehicle. Even during stay-at-home orders, they may be offering mobile detailing or cleaning services to meet your needs. You can trust that your local auto business has strongly vetted any product that it offers, which can give you confidence in a healthier commute for you and your family.

ELECTION YEAR, CORONAVIRUS, STOCK MARKET TURBULENCE… OH MY!
J
ust in case you have had your head in the sand for the last month (which may be the safest place, actually!), let’s review the trifecta of issues that are currently making 2020 a one-of-a-kind year.
We all knew 2020 was slated to be a contentious election year. No matter where you are on the political spectrum if you remember what 2016 was like, making a conscious decision to not talk politics on Facebook or at family gettogethers for the rest of the year might be a good relationship-saving move. The wild card that we didn’t see coming was the Coronavirus. The new virus, which was detected in China at the end of 2019, has spread across the globe. Health officials and governments started out talking to the public about “containment,” but the conversation has moved to “mitigation,” as the world grapples with quarantines and vaccines. As the Coronavirus spreads, from country to country, its effects have also spread through the stock market. Oil and travel stocks have been hit hard as travel has been restricted and more and more people are staying home. Concerts, sporting events, weddings, vacations and business travel have all ground to a halt. Meanwhile, we all have recently experienced the major turn that the stock market has made.
Solution on page 14.
So, what is a retiree or pre-retiree to do during turbulent times? We all know that when it comes to elections, pandemics and a topsy-turvy stock market, that these events WILL happen. There is no question “if” these events
20 years of helping people plan for Retirement... and still going strong.
will happen. Warren Buffet, known for his pity comments that bring us back to the basics when the market sours: Predicting rain doesn’t count, building the ark does.
