Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power

L

eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies. Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics. It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large. The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution. Arizonans can certainly relate. Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021. “Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.” The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain. Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for

Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources. Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. The professionals at SunSolar Solutions can help with every step of the process and get a system up and running in time to secure the maximum tax savings. Another way to fight back is by getting engaged in the fight to expand federal support for clean power, starting with participation in events like the SEIA virtual rally. The online discussion highlighted public policies that could bolster solar investment in the face of ongoing challenges, including price increases, tangled supply chains, and trade disputes. Our government could do a lot to counteract these headwinds, but until the political climate changes, any national effort to stop the Earth’s climate from changing is merely hypothetical. Senator Luján said he believes there is a path forward for federal legislation and that it runs through state-level action. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan. We at SunSolar agree with Sen. Luján that regular citizens can help drive change through political action. But we would add that political commitment can start with, or be reinforced by, practical economic commitment. When a family secures its independence from fossil fuels by going solar, it sends one more signal to the market that clean energy is the investment of the future, and it sends a similar signal to neighbors, to the power utility, and to politicians. By putting a solar system on its own roof, a family establishes a practical, concrete commitment to clean energy that outlasts any kind of purely abstract political support. If you own a home, you can become part of Arizona’s—and the country’s—solution to the problems of swelling prices and dwindling reservoirs. Arizona Rodeo Debuts New Specialty License Plate

New Plate Honors the State’s Rodeo History, Just in Time for the Scottsdale Rodeo By Doug Pacey, ADOT Communications DAVE ALFORD HAS BEEN AROUND RODEO NEARLY HIS ENTIRE LIFE. Now 68-years-old, Alford, the general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale, was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Rodeo specialty license plate. “From fans to contestants, there are many people that will get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause,” he

says. “And rodeo people haul a lot of things. I’ve already heard from people who say they’re going to put the rodeo plate on their trailers.” The Arizona Rodeo specialty plate just debuted and costs $25 upon initial application and $17 from each plate goes to promote, educate, and preserve the history of rodeo in Arizona. And there’s a lot of rodeo history in Arizona. Alford points out that the two oldest rodeos in the world – Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo – are in Arizona, and rodeos in Scottsdale, Tucson and Yuma have occurred for nearly a combined 250 years. “There’s a lot of history of rodeo in Arizona and we wanted to put it on a license plate and share it,” he says. “From fans to contestants, there are many people that will get this plate and they’ll all be helping a good cause.” To view and order any specialty plate, visit

azmvdnow.gov. Most specialty plates cost $25 upon initial application, of which $17 goes to a designated charitable organization. Personalization can be added for an additional $25 per year. Specialty plates are authorized by the Arizona legislature and have been offered since 1989. Authorized plate designs complete a review by ADOT and law enforcement. In all, there are more than 80 license plate options for Arizona motorists. 69TH ANNUAL PARADA DEL SOL RODEO RIDES INTO TOWN The Parada del Sol is a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) sanctioned rodeo. As one of the oldest, officially sanctioned rodeos in the country, the Parada del Sol Rodeo event includes bull riding, wrestling, calf roping, and barrel racing, along with other family fun. The event takes place March 10-13 at WestWorld of Scottsdale, located at 16601 N. Pima Road. Visit rodeoscottsdale.com for event details.

Have a Side Hustle? Tax Season Just Got More Complicated Contributed by Arete Financial Solutions

A

ccording to a recent survey, 45% of Americans have a side hustle in addition to their full-time job. In Maricopa County the formation of businesses rose from 4.7% to 31.9% between 2019-2020. Whether out of necessity or passion, these side jobs will have important tax consequences come April 15. “1099 contractor income is self-employment income. It is extremely important to seek guidance from a tax professional when you have any kind of business,” says Enrolled Agent Mary L. Reha, co-founder of Arete Financial Solutions. “Working with a professional who knows and understands the tax laws in this constantly changing area can save you a lot of money.”

2021 AZ TAX CREDIT DONATIONS CAN BE MADE UNTIL APRIL 15, 2022

According to Reha, those who started a side business last year need to carefully consider key items that are critical in properly and lawfully filing their 2021 taxes. PAPERWORK NEEDED: As a 1099 contractor, you need to bring documentation of your income, expenses, bank statements, P&L or revenue statements, balance sheets, vehicle mileage or actual expenses and receipts for any asset over $2,500 to your tax preparer. OVERLOOKED EXPENSES: Individuals accustomed to being a W2 employee often don’t realize the many things that can

be deducted as business owners. Your tax professional can help uncover expenses incurred that might qualify as business deductions. ESTIMATED TAXES: Self-employed individuals who expect to owe more than $1,000 in federal tax need to pay estimated taxes throughout the year to avoid underpayment penalties. A tax professional can ensure that you make the right estimated payments moving forward. RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS: W2 employees often have a 401K, but side hustle owners could also start a SEP IRA where they can contribute up to 25% of their solo business income to a retirement fund. LEGAL STRUCTURE: In addition to tax consequences, it’s equally important for anyone with a side business to have the proper legal structure to support it. “Although it is a ‘side hustle,’ it is important that people take the necessary steps to protect themselves from a legal standpoint,” says Ted Ashton, Esq., co-founder and director of the Arete Financial Solutions legal team. “Proper formation, insurance and accounting are all critical to the success and protection of you and your business.” With 70 million Americans involved with a side business, knowing how to prepare for tax day and beyond is imperative. Even though a side hustle might be more of a hobby than a real job for many, it is still a legitimate business in the eyes of the IRS and the law.

Super Bowl LVII Host Committee Launches Countdown to 2023 Game in the Valley By Jack Loder Photos by Amanda Valle

IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018. Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show. It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.” The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only

starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude.

and had an economic impact in excess of $700 million.

It’s an event that could greatly benefit the state’s economy. Gov. Doug Ducey offered a positive outlook not just on the prospect of hosting another successful Super Bowl, but on the state’s financial health as a whole.

While the macroeconomic boom grabs headlines, the benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is felt at even the smallest levels of local economies. The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events.

“Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona. This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.” Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars. The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. The 2015 game brought in 120,000 visitors

The Super Bowl isn’t just about the game but about the events surrounding it. Concerts and fan events will not only be in Glendale but in communities around the Valley. (Photo by Amanda Valle/Cronkite News)

myhyperlocalnews.com

“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”

“The Business Connect program supports minority-owned businesses, womenowned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.” The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape.

Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls. With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft. “When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.” It takes a village to host a Super Bowl, and if the track record of this committee is any indication of what’s to come, Super Bowl LVII will be a well-oiled machine. Jack Loder and Amanda Valle are a reporter and photographer with Cronkite News.

ccording to a 2020 study, the America Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found there are more than 3.3 million dogs in shelters across the United States. The Arizona Small Dog Rescue is raising funds to help these furry friends in need through its Putts for Mutts golf tournament on April 9 at Stonecreek Golf Course, located at 4435 E. Paradise Village Parkway South in Phoenix. Registration is now open and includes: 18 holes of golf, practice balls, a breakfast burrito, lunch, and prizes. Arizona Small Dog Rescue is a not-for-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Supported by a group of volunteers

dedicated to rescuing homeless, unwanted, abandoned, neglected and abused dogs, Arizona Small Dog Rescue is committed to helping canines in need and caring for them until they find their forever families. The organization focuses on providing a safe environment where the health and welfare of the dogs are the top priorities. To continue their exceptional care, Arizona Small Dog Rescue is raising funds and awareness by bringing back the Putts for Mutts golf tournament after a hiatus due to the pandemic. “Each year the cost of medical expenses increases and these expenses are no different for the animal

welfare industry,” says Denise Batistelli, Vice President of Arizona Small Dog Rescue. “In 2021, Arizona Small Dog Rescue rescued 1,459 dogs and exceeded $366,000 in medical expenses alone. With the rising cost of inflation, we are expecting this number to increase significantly. This golf tournament enables us to continue our mission of helping dogs receive the medical attention they deserve and place them into loving forever homes. We hope to see many of our community members joining us on April 9 and helping us make it a great day for the dogs.” To register for this event, call 602-791-9045 or email Putts4Mutts@azsmalldog.org. It’s time to get your pool ready for summer! Don’t wait! It’s time to drain and refill your pool to ensure it’s ready for a full summer season! You don’t have to navigate this alone!

Ask Your Pool Care Expert: Question: Can we drain pools during January, February or March? I heard that Scottsdale and Phoenix take the averages of water usage during these months which will increase my water bill for the year.

Answer:

The City of Phoenix and the City of Scottsdale have drain waiver forms that reduces the amount of water used when refilling a pool so it will not be added in to the average. Search Phoenix or Scottsdale sewage adjustment form online. Keep in mind, Scottsdale calculates their average total from December to February and Phoenix from January to March. *Submit your questions to info@truemethod.com and receive 3 months access to our Membership Program if your question is printed in our upcoming article.

Neighbors

Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Ashley Richards.

MY LIFE IS… So very wonderful. I am blessed with the most amazing family and to do what I love every single day.

and homework. I typically finish my day with work emails and a bubble bath. MY FAMILY IS… My everything! My husband, Brandon, who works in IT, and I have been married for 10 years. We have two adorable kids: Ellie, who is seven and loves gymnastics and Barbies, and our son, Eli, who is five and a huge fan of Star Wars and baseball. We also have our adorable pup that we rescued from the Humane Society, Kona.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… Anything personalized. I have a makeup bag with my name on it that is still one of my favorite gifts. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… A trip around the world with my family. I would love to introduce them to new cultures and landmarks across the globe.

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Bubble baths. I take one daily in the evening as it helps me relax and unwind from the day.

I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR 14 MONTHS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… I am a third generation Arizona native, but I have called Scottsdale home for the last 14 months after moving from Phoenix. We love our new home and community because of the incredible mountain views, wildlife, weather, and wonderful schools for our two children. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I like to call my days “organized chaos.” As a business owner, wife, and mom to two adorable kids, there is not a dull or slow moment in the day. My days include making lunches, taking the kids to school, a lot of meetings and Zoom calls with my team and wonderful clients, followed by pick up, sports, dinner myhyperlocalnews.com

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A CEO, and here I am achieving that goal! I own E Squared Marketing, a boutique digital marketing agency always willing to go the extra mile for our clients (esquaredmarketing.com). I remember going into my stepdad’s office and filing his paperwork, pretend answering his phone, and would pretend to fax papers to clients. Although the technology has changed over the years, those pretend tasks are still things I do today. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Nothing says karaoke like Bon Jovi, so any of his jams. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My sister, Mindy. She is my best friend and someone I look up to. She encourages me on the tough days and celebrates accomplishments with me. She is incredible and someone I admire so very much.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My kids. They are at the fun age of exploring and learning, and they say a lot of funny things all of the time.

THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it is all small stuff.” There is also a book on this quote, and it is true! Often our thoughts are stuck on something that may not be a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

THE PERFECT DAY… I would spend the perfect day outside in our amazing desert on a hike with my family while teaching all about nature, bugs and animals, followed by a home cooked meal. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Arizona Cancer Foundation for Children. Their mission is to provide social, emotional, and financial support directly to families managing the health and wellbeing of a loved one with pediatric cancer. The impact they are making on these families is incredible. Other favorites include ZimZam Global, Starry Night Foundation, and Family Promise. THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD • March 2022 • 13

n 2006, my wife JoAnn and I attended a conference in Boston. The event was billed as a “gathering of the nation’s top 100 real estate agents.” We were there because we had sold 4,000 homes, equaling over one billion dollars of residential real estate, in our first 10 years in the business. For three days we heard speaker after speaker extolling the virtues of the latest secrets of selling real estate, none of which made any mention of taking care of the client. Like most “secrets of success,” they were only a litany of self-serving manipulations designed to make transactions “happen” regardless of whether they served the parties or not. JoAnn and I came away empty and a little frustrated. We had sold these 4,000 homes simply by doing a good job for each of these clients, one house at a time. Our “secret,” if you wanted to call it that, was that our clients were so pleased that they brought us more clients. They brought their mothers, their siblings, their coworkers, their children and, on occasion, people they had just met and struck up a conversation with. We called it “putting our clients first” and, on that trip, we decided to write a book. We had our title, “Clients First,” and were terribly excited. This would be easy. Then, we had to face down a blank computer screen and find the words. We had to unlock the secret to the exceptional service that we seemed to deliver. We had to figure out what we did that made us unique. What had two otherwise ordinary people done to yield such extraordinary results? It took us six years and when Wiley & Sons, New York said they wanted to publish our book, the answer was incredibly simple. “Clients First” was embraced by not only the real estate industry but by many others as well. Our secret was captured in three keys: honesty, competence, and care. Nobody wants to be lied to; people do not appreciate shoddy work and who wants to do business with an enterprise that doesn’t care about their customers? It is

Writing A New York Times Bestseller

almost too easy but think about the times you’ve dealt with someone who didn’t tell the truth. They told you whatever was convenient, what they thought you wanted to hear, or they made up an explanation to serve their interest over yours. If only businesses would do the job right the first time. Who would need a customer service department if they eliminated the need to fix things in the first place? And how many times have you been told that “this company policy” or that your request is unreasonable when, to you, it seems perfectly fair? Our book became a “New York Times” bestseller in its second week in bookstores. We spoke more than 200 times to interested groups. That was 2012 and “Clients First” is still in print today. But the most important thing we did was to simplify our passion so that our readers could grasp the power of honesty, competence, and care. If you have a passion, if you have a book in you, maybe you can face that blank computer screen or that pristine legal pad and put your passion into words. Will you write a “New York Times” bestseller? We don’t know. We had a lot of support. But we know it is worth the journey because sharing your heart is the most fulfilling thing you can do. amelot Homes recently closed on the purchase of three parcels of land in Scottsdale with plans to break ground this year on three new luxury communities with a combined total of 29 homes – Aura, The Collection, and Legacy at DC Ranch.

“Camelot Homes is very excited for these exclusive new communities,” says Camelot Homes Managing Director Julie Hancock. “All three are private gated enclaves with inspired architecture designed by Woodley Architectural Group (Legacy and Aura) and Bob White of Forest Studio (The Collection). We are especially proud to have built one of the first communities in DC Ranch almost 20 years ago, and now we are building Legacy, which will be the last new community there. All three communities have limited opportunities to purchase and sales will begin this summer.” Camelot closed on 8.5 acres of land at the Southeast Corner of 128th Street and Shea Boulevard on October 26, 2021. This parcel will be the future home of Aura, a community of 12 homes ranging myhyperlocalnews.com

in size from 1,800 – 3,500 square feet. Located within the Shea Boulevard corridor, directly across the street from the new BASIS school, this location offers easy access to both the HonorHealth and Mayo Clinic campuses. The luxury homebuilder closed October 27, 2021, on 4.7 acres of land at the Northeast Corner of 74th Street and Valley View Road in Scottsdale. Here, The Collection will include eight 4,000 – 6,000 square foot homes located in the heart of Scottsdale. Camelot then closed out 2021 with the December 23 purchase of 3.1 acres west of Pima Road and North of Legacy (roughly south of the southeast corner of 92nd Street and Union Hills Drive) in Scottsdale. Nine 2,800 to 3,500 square foot homes are expected to be built on this last remaining residential parcel in the DC Ranch community. Camelot expects to break ground on all three communities by quarter four of 2022.

PVSCHOOLS CELEBRATES NINE NATIONAL BOARD-CERTIFIED TEACHERS Did you know that National Board Certification is the highest certificate an educator can achieve? It’s true! PVSchools is proud to say that five of their teachers have just reached this distinction, and another four teachers have renewed their credentials. They are now among an elite group of educators who have earned this prestigious honor. Joining the three percent of the teaching population who earned National Board Certification are Pamela Fulk, Sunrise Middle School; Miriam Schantz-Marion, Eagle Ridge Elementary School; Kelly Romm, Grayhawk Elementary School; John Trenton, Pinnacle High School; and Reagen Winters, Boulder Creek Elementary School. Since the NBCT credentials need to be renewed every few years, PVSchools had several teachers complete the National Board’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process. The educators who have completed the process are Rachel Cohen, Larkspur Elementary School; Heather Fleming, Quail Run Elementary School; Teresa Smith, Pinnacle High School; and LeAnna Wolkis Goldstein, Fireside Elementary School.

PVSCHOOLS WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER Recently, Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson appointed Michael Laney to the PVSchools Governing Board. Laney will serve on the Governing Board for the remainder of 2022. His appointment fills a vacancy that occurred after the resignation of a Governing Board member. An involved local community member, Laney co-owns an online retail business and was a top sales agent at GoDaddy for several years. He and his wife have four children, two of them have graduated from PVSchools, and two that are still attending schools in the district. He shares that he joined the board as a way to give back to his local public schools.

TAKE THE TRIP FAMILY TRAVEL HACKS JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING BREAK By Nadine Bubeck, TakeTheTripFamily.com

W

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee. Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road. USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide. The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring. GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied

ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free. CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. For example, the first hour we listen to different genres of music, then they watch a DVD, the next hour is quiet time, coloring time, etc. I also love conversation starter cards for families. Check out Table Topics; they give families ideas/topics to discuss. DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past. PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love

writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills. BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle. I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids. GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips. REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free. OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but

I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!). PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on. It’s important to instill in your kids a love for travel, exploration, and adventure— memories over monetary for the win. Safe travels! Nadine Bubeck is a former news anchor turned all things mama. How do we do this with our estate planning? It can be complicated or simple, depending on you, your pet and what you want. A pet trust is one way to take care of a pet. The wealthy and famous often do this. The widow of the Star Trek creator left $4 million for their dogs and $1 million for their caretaker. Oprah Winfrey is rumored to have established a pet trust for her beloved dogs, setting aside $30 million for them. Pet trusts are real and ordinary people (and their pets) can benefit from the Arizona law allowing trusts to be set up for pets. A pet trust can be especially helpful if you have a pet that can live a long time, like a tortoise. A friend of mine has a tortoise named Pepe who could live for 100 years. A cockatoo can live as long as 60 years. When your pets could easily outlive you, you should plan for them to be adopted by the right people and provide the money for their care. Your pet may also be very expensive to

keep. One example is the horse, which requires more time and money than most dogs or cats. A pet trust can be a great way to assure both that the money you leave is really used for the care of your pet, and to provide for the succession of caregivers. The pet trust allows you to provide money for the animal as well as detailed requirements for their care – what veterinarian to use, what food they should eat, and even requirements for grooming, walks or car rides. The pet trust can be created as a separate trust or created within your own revocable living trust. It can also be simpler, with a straightforward designation of a caregiver and a cash gift to go with each pet for their care. We often also include directions to the trustee to find a suitable new home if the original caregiver is not available. However you wish to provide for your pets, it is important to put the instructions into a binding plan. Having a plan in place for your assets, your pets and for your own care if you are incapacitated will give you immense peace of mind. If you are interested in putting an estate plan in place, I offer a complimentary first consultation. Give me a call at 602375-6752 or check out my website at libbybanks.com.

Important News for Active Naturopathic Support Adults Who’ve Struggled Their Mobility for Seasonal Allergies If stifftoness,Keep pain, and limited mobility are keeping you from By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician

he best time of year in Arizona is here—spring! The weather is amazing with trees and flowers blooming and pollen circulating through the air. For some of us though, this change of weather brings on the sneezes, sniffles, coughing, itching and wheezing. These symptoms make it difficult to enjoy the season. But you don’t have to be miserable. There are some simple, natural ways to reduce your exposure and conquer spring.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE Allergy symptoms originate from underlying inflammation and an overreaction in the body. Any additional factors that cause inflammation in the body may worsen symptoms. This can include foods, chemicals, and stress. By reducing your toxic load, your body can better handle the allergens.

T

SEASONAL ALLERGIES

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM If you suffer from allergies, you may be more prone to illnesses such as sinus infections and other respiratory conditions. Make sure your immune system is in tip-top shape before the allergy season begins. Daily vitamin C can boost immunity and can act as mild antihistamine. Local raw honey can be used daily to help prime the system for the upcoming allergy season. A simple nasal irrigation with saline, such as a netipot, can help decrease and prevent that stubborn stuffy nose. REDUCE YOUR IN-HOME ALLERGENS We are exposed to many allergens in our home. I recommend purchasing a good quality HEPA air purifier and running it 24/7 during allergy season (I run mine year-round). Allergen exposure is especially high when we are sleeping, so having it in the bedroom is beneficial. Just make sure to change and clean the filters regularly. If you have carpet in your home, vacuum at least twice per week to help decrease your exposure. If allergies are severe and you have pets, you may want to consider an alternative flooring. Don’t forget to clean your windowsills, blinds, and ceiling fans. They love to collect dust and we often forget about them. You can also eliminate dust mites by placing your pillows, comforters and blankets in the myhyperlocalnews.com

Choose foods that are nutrient dense such as green leafy vegetables and antioxidant rich fruits. Avoid dairy products, as they can add to inflammation, produce more mucus, and aggravate current allergy symptoms. Reduce processed and high sugar foods and drink ample water. If you have food sensitivities, avoiding these during an allergy flare-up can be helpful.

Work on stress management. Stress negatively effects the immune system, which results in increased inflammation and a decreased ability for the body to handle allergen exposure. Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and cultivate healthy relationships in your life. SEE YOUR NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN A naturopathic physician can offer an individualized approach for you and your specific allergy symptoms. This is achieved by treating any underlying illnesses, supporting your foundational health, and decreasing inflammation. This support along with modifying your diet, reducing your exposure, and boosting your immune system can allow you to start enjoying this gorgeous time of year. Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.

enjoying the beautiful Arizona weather and you don’t want to resort to surgery or pain killers, this free event is for you!

G

olfers, hikers, pickleball players, runners, and general activity enthusiasts who are frustrated and struggling to stay active after developing stiffness, pain, or limited range of motion are learning techniques that get their bodies moving optimally again without pain or limitation. If you’ve struggled to stay on top of your game, you’ve probably tried stretching, massage, foam rolling, icing, or even ignoring your aches and pushing through the discomfort. Or worse, you’ve cut back on your hobbies and sports, maybe even taking them off your schedule altogether. You’re not alone. Many sufferers have been told by their doctors that refraining from their favorite activities and undergoing surgery are the only options, so once-active adults stop doing the activities that they love. This is not the way it has to be. For 18 months, Michael R. had knee pain that had forced him to stop golfing, hiking, and biking. “My options seemed to be drugs and or surgery and quite frankly neither was appealing to me,” Michael said. After finding Dr. Tom Padilla, owner of Scottsdale’s top-rated physical therapy clinic, and hearing about their focus on identifying and treating the root cause of pain and their dedication to helping people avoid surgery, he scheduled an evaluation. The rest is history. “Today my pain level has reduced by 99%. Golfing is back along with longer walks, hiking and indoor biking.” To help more physical activity lovers like Michael get back to living the lives they love, Dr. Padilla, clinic owner and author of “A Runner’s Guide to Avoiding Common Running Injuries,” is hosting a free community event. The event will teach active adults how to improve mobility and eliminate pain without painkillers or surgery. The interactive event will be hosted at Dr. Padilla’s clinic located at 8350 E Evans Rd Ste C2 in Scottsdale at 5:30p on March 23. Co-hosting the event with Dr. Padilla will be golf specialist, Dr. Jacob Walton, a Titleist Performance Institute Level 1 and Medical 2 certified physical therapist.

Event attendees can look forward to learning: • Tricks for improving your sport performance (such as increasing driver distance for golfers), • Tips to start the healing process and get back to your favorite activities faster, • Why surgery and inactivity might not solve the problem, • What your long-term solution options are outside of surgery and painkillers (they do exist!). Maybe the exercises and tips Dr. Padilla shares at this hands-on workshop won’t work for you like they

have for his 1,000+ other active clients, but spending an hour of your time on a Wednesday night to learn what options you have has to be better than putting off living the life you love for another day, week, month… or even year. And it’s definitely better than settling for surgery or painkillers–solutions that are often avoidable and less effective. The Wednesday-night event will be held at the 5-star clinic at 5:30p on Wednesday, March 23. “We’re hosting this event because too many people have been told they have to give up the things they love or have surgery to get back to their lives, and it’s just not true. This workshop is for active adults who want a real, lasting solution that doesn’t require surgery, inactivity, or medicated pain management. Our past attendees who came in saying they’d tried everything have been able to start doing the things they love again without pain, without surgery, and without medication. That’s our mission at my clinic. Those people are the reason we do what we do,” says Dr. Padilla. Due to the interactive nature of the evening, Dr. Padilla caps the event at 10 people in order to give each attendee the attention they need. The intimate event is already filling up. Along with a fun and informative night, each attendee will take home a free copy of Dr. Padilla’s book “A Runner’s Guide to Avoiding Common Running Injuries” and a “Golden Ticket” that grants them a free one-on-one Discovery Visit with one of their doctors. If your New Year’s resolution was to start living the life you love again, spend an hour on Wednesday night taking the first step to making it happen. To claim your spot and free session with a doctor before they’re gone, call 480-482-0651 and reserve your seat. Can’t make it? Get a free copy of their Special Golfing Report with seven quick and easy tips to alleviate pain common in golfers and get back on the course! “Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.” “Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic myhyperlocalnews.com

film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.

“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”

has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.

progresses. A full half of the film is spent before the murder happens, which can make or break the film for some, but I believe it utilizes it well to establish our characters and make you suspicious of them. The lovely views of the Nile contrast the dark atmosphere well too. It takes a second to get going, but Kenneth Branagh’s second Poirot mystery is an improvement.

“Death On The Nile” Hercule Poirot finds himself in a new mystery while on holiday in Egypt. There’s an aura of tragedy all over “Death On The Nile,” paralleled with its themes of doomed love. There are multiple couples in the film, almost all of whom (save for our main one unfortunately) have undeniable chemistry, making you fear for their safety as the mystery THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD • March 2022 • 25

Filling A Retirement Savings Gap Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA™, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®

A

re you on track to achieve your retirement savings goals? It’s important to establish a target savings amount and regularly make retirement plan contributions. It’s also vital to regularly check your progress so you know if you are on the right track. Should you determine that you are falling behind on your savings goals, it’s time to try to rectify the situation. Any or all of the following solutions can help you overcome a retirement savings gap: #1 – BOOST YOUR SAVINGS The first option to make up for a retirement shortfall is to boost your savings. For example, if you set aside $200 more per month in your retirement accounts, that could add up to more than $63,000 in 15 years (assuming a 7% average annual return before fees and taxes). Find that money by reducing current living costs, particularly discretionary expenses. You may want to refinance your mortgage to reduce house payments or transfer balances on high interest credit cards to lower your monthly payouts. Be sure to take full advantage of an employer’s matching contribution to a workplace retirement plan if you have access to one.

#3 – MOVE YOUR RETIREMENT DATE You can choose to take more time to meet your retirement savings goal. That might mean working longer than you initially expected and continuing to set money aside to close the savings gap. If you planned to retire in your 60s or earlier, you should have some room to maneuver. Assuming you are in good health, adding a year or two of work may be feasible. #4 – ADJUST YOUR RETIREMENT EXPECTATIONS If you are too close to retirement to make a significant dent in your retirement savings gap, you may need to adjust lifestyle expectations when you are done working. Take a closer look at your retirement income needs and determine where you can cut back on discretionary expenses in the years to come. Look for help Even if retirement is a long way off, you want to stay on top of your progress and make sure you are taking all of the steps you can to make your goals a reality. Talk to a financial advisor to help you assess where you stand and what you can do to avoid or erase a savings gap. Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFATM, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®,

Getaway

CORAZÓN CABO RESORT & SPA

A LUXURIOUS RETREAT IN THE HEART OF CABO By Ava Hiniker Photos Courtesy of Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa

L

ocated in stunning Cabo San Lucas, Mexico beside the coveted shores of Medano Beach, Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa is home to endless breathtaking experiences all amplified by the beautiful tropical scenery enveloping the coastline and walking distance to shops, attractions, and the marina. Just added to the Noble House Hotels & Resorts’ elite collection of resorts, Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa recently underwent a $100 million transformation and features a new-build tower with 204 rooms and suites, the highest and most lavish rooftop bar in Cabo, two infinity edge pools, and multiple dining options. Standing nine stories high, Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa is topped off by Rooftop 360, which proudly holds the title of the highest rooftop bar in Cabo. The roomy and ritzy deck boasts unmatched views of the Sea of Cortez and enchanting city skyline, flanked by an infinity pool overlooking the sea. The bar evokes local charm with custom patterned cement tiles made in Todos Santos embellishing its facade, while string lights and chandeliers dangle from the signature, leaf-patterned pergola ceiling made of Palo-de-Arco, a material typically used in Baja. Rooftop 360 is the perfect spot to sit back, wine and dine, while you enjoy the best view anywhere in Cabo San Lucas. Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa offers 187 hotel rooms and 17 luxury suites, ranging in size from 358 to 945 square feet. There are multiple room options to choose from, 30 • March 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

including multi-room suites for families and groups, as well as romantic suites with hot tubs. Even within the lovingly decorated rooms, you’re never far from the remarkable outdoor view as the resort features floorto-ceiling glass sliding doors that let in the picturesque sight of the clear waters, shimmering sunset, and sleek city skyline. All the common areas in the resort draw influence from the rich history and cultural elements of Mexico. Every wall and surface utilize a light, airy color palette and one-of-a-kind artwork to create a soothing and immersive atmosphere for all who enter. In addition, an exclusive haven of relaxation and fun, the Corazón Beach Club offers a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that manages to be both playful and relaxed, indulgent, and chill all at once. The beach club features daybeds, lounge chairs, a live DJ, and a full-service bar and kitchen, with first-rate daily food and drink specials. After exploring all the wondrous sights that Corazón has to offer, visitors are welcome to participate in countless fun and inviting activities present throughout the resort. The full-service spa, Sparitual, provides the perfect opportunity to cool off and rejuvenate through a wide array of deep tissue massages, cleansing facials, and revitalizing body treatments. Spa-goers also have access to refreshing steam rooms, saunas, and pressure showers as well as a fully operational beauty salon for all manicure and pedicure needs. With this newfound energy, guests can then dive into either of the two infinity pools located on the resort grounds. These pools are fantastic in both size and experience as they stretch across the base of the resort without having any obvious partitions separating the swimmers with the marvelous landscape. Partners

and parties alike can make laps around the infinity pools while being treated to a magnificent view of the towering mountains and swaying palm trees littering the side of the beach. All this amazing beach-side unwinding is also sure to drum up an appetite. Not to worry, as Corazón Cabo has a plethora of options sure to satisfy your every taste, including access to ten restaurants and bars ranging in style from casual and trendy to sophisticated. Whether you’re looking to eat impeccably grilled seafood by the shore, visit the alluring microbrewery Baja Brewing, or swing by the mojito bar, the opportunities to try new dishes and refreshing drinks are plentiful.

With days filled with perpetual tranquility, exquisite meals, and the impressive flora and fauna of Medano beach, Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa promises a unique, authentic experience perfect for all looking for their own slice of paradise.
