CITY NEWS

CENSUS DAY IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!

THE U.S. CONSTITUTION MANDATES THAT A CENSUS IS CONDUCTED. It is one of the very few duties of the federal government that was spelled out by the Founding Fathers in 1787. Further legislation requires a census every 10 years.

The U.S. Constitution requires the U.S. Census Bureau not just attempt to offer information or a service to the population, but that the Census Bureau actually reach and count every person living in the United States and its territories — of all ages, residence statuses, and locations — whether or not they desire to participate, and regardless of whether they are difficult to find, reach, and count. The purpose of the 2020 Census is to conduct a census of population and housing and disseminate the results to the President, the states, and the American people. The goal of the 2020 Census is to count everyone once and in the right place.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? The city of Scottsdale’s budget comes from state-shared revenue based on population. Each person counted is worth $3,000 in public services. Essential city services, including police and fire protection as well as roads, parks, hospitals, and schools all depend on an accurate census count.

The Census Bureau will be introducing new technology in 2020 to make it easier than ever to respond to the census. For the first time, you will be able to respond online, by phone or by mail. • Online - People will receive a mailed postcard with a personal code to enter their information online. • Phone - Residents can also call to take the survey. •Mail - Paper surveys will be mailed if online submissions are not entered. Your information is secure and private. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share your answers by name with others, including welfare agencies, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Internal Revenue Service, courts, police and the military.

The numbers published by the Census Bureau are combined with thousands of answers from people in your neighborhood and across the country.

Only sworn Census Bureau employees can see your responses. In fact, the law provides severe penalties for any census employee that makes your answers known. HOW IS CENSUS DATA USED? • Census data determines the number of seats allocated to the states for the House of Representatives. This requirement is mandated in the U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 2 and the 14th Amendment, Section 2). • Census data is used for defining representative boundaries for congressional districts, state legislative districts, school districts, and voting precincts. • Census data is used to appropriate federal funds to local communities including Scottsdale, Arizona. • Census information is used to calculate unemployment, crime, and poverty rates as well as health and educational data. • Businesses of all sizes depend on census data to make decisions about where to locate, hire, and invest.

LET IT FLOW: CITY OF SCOTTSDALE APPROVES WINE CONSUMPTION AT CITY PARKS By Molly Cerreta Smith IT’S WINE TIME IN THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE! At its January 21 meeting at City Hall City, the City Council approved Ordinance No. 4437, which amends city code to allow wine consumption throughout facilities at the City of Scottsdale’s Parks and Recreation Department around the community.

of beer in Scottsdale parks with the purchase of a permit. Beer is permitted to be consumed in cans or kegs only, with glass bottles prohibited in all Scottsdale parks. Presently, beer is the only alcohol that Scottsdale permits within our parks system due to state liquor law restrictions that were in effect the last time the Scottsdale park rules changed.”

Reed Pryor, Parks and Recreation director and Nick Molinari, Parks and Recreation manager authored a report to the City Council that outlines the fact that beer consumption is currently allowed but (until now) wine consumption has been prohibited by state law.

Throughout 2018-19 fiscal year, officials report that the Scottsdale Parks and Recreation Department issued 707 beer permits, and City Parks officials reported that the Arizona Legislature changed state law allowing people to “consume wine from a broken package” in public recreation areas with the permission of the property owner.

The report reads: “The City of Scottsdale currently allows the consumption

27, 2019 as House Bill 2281 from the 2019 state legislative session. Prior to the passage of HB 2281, state law only allowed people to consume beer from a broken package in public recreation areas with the permission of the property owner.” Chapter 20, Article III of Scottsdale City Code was amended to allow permitted wine drinking beginning on the first of this month. Officials report the amendment also defines the cost of “beer and wine permits” as $15 according to the Community Services Fees and Charges adopted by City Council.

will not request or store personal identification information. Parks and Recreation officials also reported that the Scottsdale Police Department does not anticipate impact to public safety. So let’s raise a glass to Scottsdale… and let them drink wine!

In effect, Ordinance No. 4437 changes the fact that there is no formal application for a permit. Any language referring to an “application” is being changed to a “request” and that the city thescottsdalestandard.com

SCOTTSDALE AIRPORT: AN ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE By City of Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE AIRPORT, THE BUSIEST SINGLE RUNWAY GENERAL AVIATION AIRPORT IN THE NATION, CONTINUES TO BE A SIGNIFICANT ASSET FOR THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE AND THE ENTIRE REGION. This was confirmed recently by an economic analysis by Dr. Lee McPheters, research professor at Seidman Research Institute at the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU. The airport experienced a 20.7 percent increase in total benefits since 2014. Total benefits consist of direct benefits like output, employment and income related to aviation activity plus secondary benefits from spending recycled into the regional economy. Aviation activity at the airport and airpark created $688 million in total economic output (value of all goods and services) for 2019. Aviation activity also added $37 million to local and state tax revenues -- an economic benefit of $1.9 million daily. The analysis confirms Scottsdale Airport’s significant economic contributions and the role it plays in bolstering benefits across the regional economy. The analysis calculated the 2019 catalytic (spin-off) benefit of the airport to be $10 billion for the entire non-aviation portion of the Airpark, an increase of 22-percent over the 2014 figure of $8.2 billion (a 14.5 percent increase in 2019 dollars).

Scottsdale Airport has a strong influence on the Airpark, the second largest employment center in Arizona. Together, aviation activity in the airport/airpark supported 3,979 total jobs in the region with incomes to workers and proprietors of $241 million. “These figures speak volumes on the importance of general aviation to our local, regional and state economies,” said Gary P. Mascaro, aviation director at Scottsdale Airport. “The airport is an economic powerhouse and an asset for the city.”

The prominent economic benefits derived from Scottsdale Airport are employment, corporate jet customers and air visitors. EMPLOYMENT There are 1,706 aviation-related jobs at Scottsdale Airport with the inclusion of the Airpark.

According to Dr. McPheters, “This is more than any other general aviation airport in the state. Falcon Field has 1,486 jobs at the airport and in the most recent report, Deer Valley has 965 jobs on-site. Flagstaff Airport provides 498 jobs.” CORPORATE JETS Scottsdale Airport has 478 based aircraft and 176 of these (37 percent) are corporate jets; a higher percentage than at any other airport in the Phoenix area. “The Phoenix metro area has several excellent general aviation airports, but what sets Scottsdale apart as a driver for the economy is the number of corporate jets based there, more than the combined total at all other Valley airports,” said McPheters. AIR VISITORS Air visitors create high-powered economic benefits for the area -- especially during events like the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction and Waste Management Phoenix Open. The study showed that air visitors arriving into Scottsdale Airport spent $54 million in the region -- a 36 percent increase from 2014. “Another unique indicator for Scottsdale Airport is the proportion of air traffic due to visiting aircraft arriving from outside the area,” said McPheters. “At Scottsdale Airport that figure is about 60 percent, compared to 20 to 30 percent at less active general aviation airports.” For more and to view the entire study, visit Scottsdaleaz.gov/airport/airport-economic-benefit-study.

The Potential Tax Benefits of Company Stock in Your 401(k) Plan

f you own a 401(k) that includes stock from your company, chances are you’ll someday need to decide what to do with it. This decision often comes into play for people who are retiring or otherwise leaving their employer. Whatever the case may be for you, it’s important to understand your options when determining whether and how to move company stock out of your 401(k). It’s also worth exploring whether an easily overlooked provision in the U.S. tax code could help you manage your tax bill when the time comes.

Many people who leave their employer choose to roll over their entire 401(k) plan account – including all of their company stock – into an IRA. If this transaction is completed in a proper manner, it can be done so with no immediate tax ramifications. However, it’s important to understand that any future withdrawals from the rollover IRA will be taxed at ordinary income tax rates, which can range from 10 percent to 37 percent. And, those who take a taxable distribution prior to age 59-1/2 may face an additional penalty of 10 percent – something that should be taken into serious consideration prior to making such a move.

Capitalizing on net unrealized appreciation rules

401(k) holdings and take it out as an in-kind distribution. You will owe tax on the cost basis of the stock at your ordinary income tax rate. However, the appreciated value of the stock (the NUA) will remain untaxed until you liquidate shares of the stock. In that event, you will be taxed at the generally more favorable capital gains tax rate, currently no higher than 15 percent. Dividends will be taxable on an ongoing basis, but possibly at a more favorable “qualified dividends” rate. In certain circumstances, taking a lumpsum distribution of employer stock and invoking NUA provisions could result in a long-term tax-savings. Importantly, it’s best to wait until you reach age 59-1/2. Completing this transaction prior to that age may incur a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty.

Check your 401(k)

Take a closer look at the assets held in any of your 401(k) plans with both current and past employers. If company stock is included, you may want to consider which strategy – a rollover of the full amount or a lump-sum distribution of employer stock utilizing NUA – is more effective for you. Check with your plan administrator to find out more about the details of the stock position you own. Also consult with your financial and tax advisor to help determine the right approach for your circumstances.

HEALTH

ARE SEASONAL ALLERGIES WEARING YOU DOWN? By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician

T

he birds are chirping, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the pollen is circulating in the air. For some of us, this amazing time of year brings on watery eyes, sneezing, sniffles, coughing, wheezing and itching. These symptoms make it difficult to enjoy this beautiful weather. You don’t have to be miserable! There are some simple, natural ways to reduce your exposure and conquer Spring.

them. You can also eliminate dust mites by placing your pillows, comforters and blankets in the dyer on high heat for 10 minutes just once per week.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET/LIFESTYLE: Allergy symptoms all stem from underlying inflammation and overreaction in the body. Any additional factors that cause inflammation in the body can worsen symptoms. This can include foods, chemicals and stress. By reducing your toxic load, your body can better handle the allergies.

REDUCE YOUR IN-HOME ALLERGENS: I recommend purchasing a good quality air purifier. You want to make sure it is a HEPA air purifier and it is running 24/7 during the allergy season (I run mine year-round). We are exposed to many allergens when we sleep, so having it in the bedroom is beneficial. Make sure to change the filters and clean it regularly.

Choose foods that are nutrient dense such as green leafy vegetables and antioxidant rich fruits. Avoid dairy products, as they can add to inflammation, produce more mucus and aggravate current allergy symptoms. Reduce processed and high sugar foods. If you have food sensitivities, avoiding these during an allergy flare up can also be helpful.

If you have carpet in your home, vacuum at least twice per week to help decrease your exposure. If allergies are very severe and you have pets, you may want to consider an alternative flooring. conditions. Make sure your immune system is in tip top shape before the allergy season begins. Daily Vitamin C can boost immunity and can act as mild antihistamine. Local raw honey can be used daily to help prime the system for the upcoming allergy season. A simple nasal rinse with saline, such as a neti pot, can help decrease and prevent that stubborn stuffy nose. Regular exercise can promote the anti-inflammatory pathway and boost immunity.

LEGAL

CHANGES IN THE LAW MAY CHANGE YOUR

ESTATE PLAN FOR YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

A

new law governing beneficiaries of your retirement accounts could create a tax disaster or result in large distributions to beneficiaries (like minors, young adults and irresponsible heirs) who are ill-equipped to manage the funds. That law, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act) became effective January 1, 2020. This law may upset your estate plan because the Act requires most designated beneficiaries (other than spouses) to withdraw the entire balance of your retirement account within 10 years of inheriting the account. For anyone who has their trust as the beneficiary of their retirement account, it is imperative to have a trust review and evaluate the options for their beneficiaries. Under the old law, all beneficiaries of inherited

retirement accounts could stretch out distributions over their individual life expectancy, meaning your younger beneficiaries would take smaller distributions usually over a long time period, resulting in lower taxes. Under the SECURE Act, most beneficiaries (not including spouses) must withdraw the entire IRA over a period of 10 years. That shorter 10-year time frame for taking distributions will result in the acceleration of income tax due.

Just as important, if you haven’t had a review of your estate plan in a while, you should make an appointment with an attorney to go over it. I recommend a review at least every three years. I’m happy to help! Just call our office at 602-375-6752 or schedule an appointment via our website: LibbyBanks.com/schedule-estate-planning-meeting.

Your old trust needs a review and a possible change because a trust created while the old law was in place took into account the ability to stretch retirement account distributions out over a beneficiary’s lifetime. With that option eliminated, that same helpful trust could now result in much higher taxes, and large distributions to the ultimate beneficiaries, which may not be what you want. This change in law means that a proper analysis of your estate planning goals, and a review of your estate documents is needed to be sure you have properly planned for your beneficiaries.

KIDS’ CORNER TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR CHILD INVOLVED IN MUSIC

M

usic is an important part of our lives. It enriches us emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually. Studies have shown that music improves cognitive development in children, as well as brain efficiency, learning speed, and overall brain health. Learning to play a musical instrument helps individuals understand mathematical concepts, develop better motor skills, teaches discipline, inspires creativity, and can help build confidence, self-esteem and social skills. There are so many different instruments and types of music that it’s difficult to know where to begin, so here are some suggestions for beginning your child’s musical journey. FIND THE RIGHT MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AND LESSONS FOR YOUR CHILD It’s important to find a music program and musical instrument that suits your child’s age and interests. Most public schools have music programs that begin teaching instruments around the fourth and fifth grade, but you can begin private lessons as young as five or six years old. Work with your kid to see what they are interested in before you get started with the time and expense of formal lessons. Here are a few important factors to keep in mind: • Age, Size, and Physical Limitations: Consider the age, size, and physical limitations of your child when you choose an instrument.

12 • March 2020 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

• Noise Level: Think about how your neighbors and family will feel about a drum set, guitar, or loud instrument, and whether you can reduce noise and set practice times to keep the peace. • Space: Make sure you have room in your home for a piano, harp, or drum set, if that is the direction you want to go – otherwise, think about smaller, more portable instruments. • Cost: Instruments can be very expensive, so consider buying used until your child’s interest increases and skill level improves. • Time: Make sure that music lessons can fit in your schedule. Don’t let lessons cause your kid’s schoolwork or other activities to suffer or add undue stress for you or your family. RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN PHOENIX There are some great resources in the Valley to help you learn more about getting your child involved in music, many of which are non-profit organizations. Here are a few of the many options to consider when you need help getting started. Musical Instrument Museum The Musical Instrument Museum, also known as the MIM, is a state-of-the-art facility that showcases instruments and music from every genre and almost every country in the world. The MIM displays more than 6,500 instruments, allowing visitors to see and hear music and instruments from around the globe. The museum also provides visitors a hands-on experience of playing different instruments,

and offer many camps and educational programs for kids and adults alike. Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Solid Rock is a non-profit organization started by local celebrity Alice Cooper. Their mission is to make a difference in the lives of teens by providing music, arts, and vocational programs in the field of entertainment. They challenge teens to discover their passion through music, dance, video and sound production, self-expression, and creativity. Sounds Academy Sounds Academy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach, mentor, and provide musical experiences and opportunities to underserved youth in the Phoenix area. This organization provides music education opportunities to a wide variety of children, while removing any barriers that children may have in receiving quality music education. Music Together Music Together offers early childhood music programs in the greater Phoenix area. This great organization helps families embrace the joys of family music-making and the powerful benefits of having music in their lives, by nurturing kids’ natural musicality in a playful, musically-rich learning environment. EDUCATION

DR. SCOTT MENZEL SELECTED AS SCOTTSDALE SUPERINTENDENT

T

he Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Governing Board voted unanimously to select Dr. Scott Menzel as the District’s next leader. Menzel comes from Ann Arbor, Michigan where he currently serves as Superintendent of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. Last month, the Board narrowed a list of 29 applications down to three: Dr. Kimberly Guerin, Dr. Shelley Redinger and Dr. Menzel. Recently, the Board and five advisory committees interviewed the three finalists. Each committee then provided the Board with its impressions of the candidates. “In our search for a new superintendent — one who will continue to move the district forward and prepare our students for success in the 21st century — we strived to create an inclusive process. We convened five committees with community members, students, educators, administrators and District staff to ensure their voices were heard,” said SUSD Governing Board President Allyson Beckham.

Ages 3-12 “After considering a competitive field of candidates, we found our district’s next leader. On behalf of

the Governing Board, I am excited to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Menzel. We look forward to welcoming him to our team and introducing him to the SUSD community.”

Beckham also thanked Dr. John Kriekard for his service to SUSD with a handshake. “We’re grateful to Dr. Kriekard for leading our district through a turbulent time and supporting an inclusive search process for his successor.” Menzel will take over from Kriekard, who has served as superintendent since May 2018. His contract with the District expires June 30. “I want to congratulate Dr. Menzel on his new post. I will do everything in my power to make the coming transition a smooth one. I look forward to seeing SUSD’s ongoing success under his leadership,” said Kriekard. The Governing Board has appointed Vice President Patty Beckman and Board Member Jann-Michael Greenburg to work with Dr. Menzel and District Legal Counsel Michelle Marshall to negotiate an employment contract.

SPRING IS

Festival Season IN SCOTTSDALE

S

pring in Scottsdale in my favorite time of year. Can you argue? The weather is amazing, and there is so much to do. March begins what I like to call “festival season” — with a fantastic festival focused on food, wine, beer, art, food, fashion, food, music, food… okay, sensing a pattern here? Though Scottsdale certainly is no stranger to a fantastic food festival, each offers its own focus — and a whole lot more than just food! So get out and see what this festival season has to offer during March and April. SCOTTSDALE ARTS FESTIVAL MARCH 13 - 15 Celebrating its 50th year, The Scottsdale Art Festival is a three-day celebration of art, music, food and fun for the whole family. Held at Scottsdale Civic Center Park (3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. in Scottsdale) Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15, the line-up includes kid-friendly activities such as bandana screen printing, self-guided activities including the Camp DreamTree House, a Scavenger Trail as well as the 50th Anniversary Artists Exhibition, yoga, live music at two stages, games garden (for the “big kids” at heart!), silent disco party and more! Another awesome perk: Families attending can take advantage of a free service that allows parents to drop off potty-trained children ages 3+ for one-hour timeslots through Trusting Connections Nanny Agency. www.ScottsdaleArtsFestival.org SUPER SPRING FESTIVAL MARCH 21 This one is all about families! Only in its second year, the Super Spring Festival is in its infancy compared to some of our city’s longstanding events, but the fact that it’s geared towards kids and is held at the Arizona Boardwalk of the OdySea in the Desert Entertainment District with so many other family friendly attractions

CONSIDERING CBD FOR DOGS?

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The CBD Ed Show with Ed Chaney

M

any owners believe in providing the highest quality treatment options available for their pets; including the best vets, the most nutritious kibble, and the gentlest products for their sensitive little bodies. CBD as a natural alternative to pharmaceuticals has been shown to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and calm anxieties. HOW DOES CBD INTERACT WITH DOGS? Just like humans, dogs also have an Endocannabinoid System that helps regulate their body through receptors in the body. These receptors, called CB1 & CB2, are located throughout the central & peripheral nervous systems. They interact with CBD similarly to a key in a car ignition; turning on and off the car when needed. WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CBD FOR DOGS? Since CBD helps regulate your pups body, it also helps benefit their general health and wellness. Cannabidiol is actually an antioxidant, which helps prevent and kill off cancer and tumor cells. This may greatly benefit dogs that are experiencing any sort of cancer treatment by helping with pain relief, effects of radiation therapy, or helping control tumor growths.

Solution on page 25.

This natural cannabinoid also helps soothe stress and anxiety; perfect for chillin’ your pup out when you leave the house. One of the most common stressors with new puppies is separation anxiety.

Owners also love that CBD helps in relieving pain in their four legged friends by soothing inflammation. Whether it be hip dysplasia, injury, or just sore muscles from a rough day in the yard, your pup will love life again when they are pain free! CAN CBD HELP WITH CANCER IN DOGS? CBD has yet to have scientific research declaring these statements as absolutely true and backed up. Although, even with limited research, many veterinary oncologists are in a “grey area” when it comes to recommending CBD for their patients to help treat cancer. We suggest looking into integrative or holistic veterinarians if you are interested in treating your pet naturally alongside medical protocols. As stated by a local veterinarian, “Marijuana is illegal at the federal level so I cannot discuss it with you. Not unless I want to lose the ability to prescribe drugs.” The average dosing has been decided upon 1mg of CBD per 10lbs of a dog’s body weight. As long as the dose is kept in that range, most dogs do not have any negative side effects to this naturally occurring molecule. We suggest starting low, and going slow. Pay attention to how your dog reacts to the first doses, and seek professional help if any adverse effects occur. The next time you are out shopping for your four-legged friend, consider picking up some CBD oil to help their general well-being. CBD is a great daily regimen for those wanting to maintain optimal health in their pets.

You don’t act your age. Why feel like it?

THE JOYS OF BUYING A HOME

By Joseph Callaway, Those Callaways

W

hether you are moving up, downsizing, or relocating, making the decision to buy a home is an adventurous time filled with excitement and wonder. Where will it be? How big? Gated or nongated? One story or two? There are so many decisions to be made, and it can be so much fun - the joy of anticipation is hard to beat. The next joy is finding out you qualify for a mortgage. That perfect home for you can be found at every price point, but knowing where you fit and that you fit can be empowering. The words “you’re approved” can be music to your ears. Here is the biggest joy of the whole home hunting process – free help! That’s right, you are the star in this movie and if you are wise, you will enjoy the ride. This is how it works: each seller wants to sell their one property and you, the buyer, get to choose between thousands of homes on the market. The market’s solution to this dilemma? Commission! And the seller pays! Enter the Real Estate agent.

REALTORS® are wonderful. They give you their time, expertise, experience and market knowledge. They know every area and everybody. They will probably watch your kids and wash your dishes, and they do it all for free. Your Real Estate agent is so helpful, you’ll want to get one as early in the process as possible. In your homebuying process, a REALTOR® can save you time and guard you from mistakes. Your agent gets you answers and helps you ask the right questions. Your agent is the one who makes this home search a joy. Many people, and you may be one of them, prefer to do their own searching on the internet, and this is fine. However, you can suffer from 18 • March 2020 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD

information overload or worse yet, disinformation frustration, when you find out that the perfect house you just discovered is actually sold. This is not joy. So how to you find the right agent for you? Open houses are a good resource. Ask your friends - they often share your values. Use a relative but be careful that they will tell it to you straight. Friendship can be a candid killer. Friends hesitate to say some things you need to hear. Just have this conversation up front and tell them to treat you like a client, not a buddy. Be sure to use an agent who is experienced. A newbie can be enthusiastic but you’re looking for joy and that comes with time on the job. The final joy of buying a home is when you get the keys. This is a special day and those keys open the door to your next adventure. That’s it - have fun, get qualified, choose an agent who will bring you joy, and get those keys! JEWELRY

DIAMONDS AS PORTABLE WEALTH FOR BEAUTY, PLEASURE AND INVESTMENT By Indra Jhaveri and Carlo Calescibetta, G.G.

T

hey say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but what is it that makes them so attractive? Most people find the glitter, flash and rainbow dispersion of colors fascinating, while a diamond’s rarity and value have their own allure. With the advent of the internet, the consumer has access to an unprecedented level of information about diamonds, diamond qualities, prices and availability. But what’s true and what isn’t? Let’s set the record straight. The appearance of a diamond results from its unique chemical composition and it’s journey through the high pressure, high temperature environment in which it grows. These beautiful crystals of carbon, when mined and given the high quality cutting and shaping they deserve, capture, refract and reflect light in a way that borders on the hypnotic. The value of diamonds tends to increase steadily. Using diamonds for investment purposes is not a new concept. Stocks and bonds, gold, silver and real estate all have in common the possibility that their

value will increase over time. This possibility makes them reasonable investments. When purchased through a reliable broker at below wholesale costs, the probability of value enhancement is high.

The G.I.A. diamond grading system has helped standardize objective grading standards and nomenclature worldwide. The G.I.A. diamond grading certificate is the go-to standard in the industry. Diamonds can be laser inscribed with the certificate number to assure authenticity. This gives purchasers confidence in the accepted quality of a diamond, as well as establishing a provenance. The Kimberley process has helped ensure that diamonds are sourced responsibly from “non-conflict” sources. With the advent of the internet, customers also have nearly limitless access to information about diamonds, diamond cutting, quality and availability as well as information about marketability and re-selling potential. New scanning software can even allow an individual a three-dimensional and/or 360-degree view of many of the stones listed online. Still, nothing compares to holding a stone, observing for one’s self the flash and scintillation of a well-cut stone. A trusted and reliable broker can source stones and guide an investor to a diamond that will bring the maximum return on investment. With proper sourcing, quality investment diamonds can be procured directly from the source at a minimal margin to insure the maximum return on any investment stone. Whether in small sizes or large, this combination of beauty and rarity makes for a unique

thescottsdalestandard.com

investment potential; an investment whose value grows over time while being a wearable display of wealth and beauty. There are standards of beauty and quality that are perceived as “ideals” for investment purposes. In general, larger, cleaner stones in the D, E, F color range were once considered the ‘Rolls Royce’ of investment commodities; but now, any diamond when procured at the right price with (G.I.A.) certification has the potential to grow in value. The American market tends to run in the SI2 - VS1 clarity range and from G - J colors but even darker colors that do not yet reach the “fancy color” designation have value and appeal. One of the major improvements in the past couple of decades is the quality of cutting. Formerly, the retention of weight was the main focus of cutting, resulting in many stones that were too deep or too shallow and which allowed light to leak out causing

stones to appear dark inside. With a well-cut stone, light that enters through the top of the stone (the crown), bounces around inside and then back out through the crown. This results in the rainbow colors we see (dispersion) while the light reflected from the facets causes the flash and glitter. To the discerning eye, the difference between a well-cut and a poorly cut stone can be seen from across the room.

THE OLD W E S T HIGHWAY I

f you’re heading east towards New Mexico and want to venture off the beaten path and avoid the extreme traffic on I-10, consider taking a trip down the Old West Highway. This historic route between Apache Junction, AZ, and Lordsburg, NM, runs through the Superstition Wilderness on US Highway 60, over the Salt River Canyon between Superior and MiamiGlobe, and through the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. It continues east through tiny Arizona towns like Bylas and Safford, moving east on Highway 70 to the tiny town of Duncan, ending in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The road winds through mountains, farmland, and history on a mostly twolane road through the eastern part of the state. Here are a few of the places on the Old West Highway that we recommend visiting near the Phoenix area. APACHE TRAIL One of the most spectacular, and heart-pounding, side trips you can take from the Old West Highway is the Apache Trail. Arizona State Route 88 is a mostly unpaved, steep and winding road connecting Apache Junction to Roosevelt Lake in the Tonto National Forest. The Apache Trail, named after the Apache Indians who once used this as a regular trade route, passes through

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier

desert, mountains, lakes, and forests in the Superstition Wilderness, on the way to places like Lost Dutchman State Park, Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, the Roosevelt Dam and the Tonto National Monument. Use caution because the Apache Trail winds steeply through 40 miles of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes, and the narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flats all the way to Roosevelt Dam. Be prepared for steep cliff drops and few safety barriers. The trail is not for the faint of heart, nor is it recommended for large RVs or trailers, but the scenery along this road is breathtaking. LOST DUTCHMAN STATE PARK Lost Dutchman State Park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains, about 40 miles east of Phoenix. The park is named after a legendary lost gold mine in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, and is known for breathtaking scenery, trails, and wildlife. It’s also famous for having a fantastic wildflower bloom in the spring and one of the most challenging hikes in the Superstition Mountains, the renown Siphon Draw Trail that takes hikers to the top of the rock wall surface of the Flatiron.

TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT Nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain to see ancient cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved, but fairly steep path up the mountain. Check in at the Visitor Center and be sure to begin your hike before 4:00 p.m. to make sure you make it back down the trail before dark. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a three to four-hour guided tour, so plan ahead to book your tour in advance. SUPERIOR Superior had its origins as a mining town, drawing prospectors and mining companies to the area. Fortunately, one of those settlers was Colonel Boyce Thompson, who founded one of our favorite places to visit in the area, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Established in the 1920s, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. The Arboretum is on

Highway 60, just outside of Superior, and a beautiful spot for a day trip or a place to stop when you travel down the Old West Highway on the way to Globe. GLOBE Globe is a great town to visit to get a taste of the historic Old West Highway and Arizona’s Territorial history. Whether you want to visit ancient Indian ruins, see the historic downtown, shop for antiques, or enjoy the works of local artists, Globe has a little bit of everything. Our favorite stop in Globe is the ruins of Besh-BaGowah, a 200-room prehistoric Salado masonry pueblo overlooking Pinal Creek. The site is located in a small city park and includes a museum and gift shop with excavated items like prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts. As Arizonans, we live in a state that is full of natural wonders and beautiful scenery all year round. Many of these fantastic places are in or near the Phoenix area, so take time to visit different parts of the Sonoran Desert near you and enjoy the Arizona wilderness up close. Be sure to visit Ladybugsblog.com for more ideas and information about places to visit and explore everywhere in our great state. thescottsdalestandard.com

MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS BAD BOYS FOR LIFE

Mike and Marcus have to deal with the fallout of an enemy that Mike put away long ago. Bad Boys for Life proves that long-dormant franchises have no excuses in not only producing something new that is great, but also taking it to the next level. It’s got the fun, over-the-top action you know and love while bringing a more neon and Asian cinema inspired style to it. Surprisingly, it also tells a more mature and caring story about family (and not in an ironic way like the Fast and Furious movies). It’s refreshing to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence truly give their all here, while also bringing us new and well-developed characters. It may not be the gleeful anarchy of Michael Bay’s previous films, but I am thankful that it exists.

BIRDS OF PREY

Harley Quinn teams up with a group of antiheroes to fight a crime lord in Gotham City. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is another great piece in DC’s current series of directordriven films. The sun-soaked, dirty Gotham shown here is a nice departure from the dark and dank city we typically see. This film offered an amusing tone and story with a surprising pull at the heartstrings. We have an absolutely fantastic cast here, where Margot Robbie continues to showcase that she was the perfect choice for Quinn. The newly introduced characters were also all expertly cast and showcase distinct personalities that add to the group dynamic. I especially love Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as a pretentious but still scary art-loving villain rounds out the troop perfectly.

THE GENTLEMEN

An Oklahoma-born businessman must fight against gangsters for control of his weed empire. When the film has Colin Farrell and a breakdancing gang on screen, it’s the rare moment that The Gentlemen gains some real audience enthusiasm. Beyond that, Guy Ritchie’s “back to form” film feels less like a homecoming and more like a depressing high school reunion. You’ve seen these characters, set ups and jokes a million times before. Ritchie doesn’t seem to do anything new with the formula. The usage of technology comes up multiple times in the film, but it doesn’t add any value or play a role in our characters’ arcs. The actors do fine with what they’re given, but again, beyond Farrell, they do nothing to elevate the material. Unfortunately, it does the worst thing a movie can do...be boring.

THE RHYTHM SECTION

A woman goes on a mission to find those responsible for the death of her family. Reed Morano has proven to be a major addition to action directors, as Rhythm Section gives her the shot to pull off some good set pieces. In particular, her car chase scene is a lovely balance between raw and exciting. The problems that I see with this flick are the messy and morally confused screenplay, wonky editing and a miscast Blake Lively. Dark storytelling can be great, but there needs to be energy behind it. Showing misery for an hour and 40 minutes doesn’t just make something dark and edgy, it makes it depressing.

YOUR GUIDE TO LOCAL DINING TOMASO’S ITALIAN KITCHEN: A CULINARY LEGEND CONTINUES By Molly Cerreta Smith

I

’ve been eating and writing my way through the valley as a profession for more than 20 years. And one of my very first foodie assignments when I was fresh out of college was to interview Tomaso Maggiore. I arrived at Tomaso’s at lunchtime as scheduled and I was led to a large table of probably 15 people, Tomaso among them, already dining and drinking, laughing and talking — almost entirely in Italian. Tomaso pulled a chair out for me right next to him and made me feel as comfortable as a newbie writer could in a situation like that. The lunch went on for hours; the memory remains. So when I learned about Tomaso’s newest concept in my neck of the woods, I was delighted. Now a little history about this local culinary legend…

A true Sicilian at heart, Tomaso Maggiore discovered his love for food during his upbringing in Italy. He developed his first concept, Tomaso’s, in 1977 and has successfully managed and cultivated restaurant concepts for four decades while consistently creating new ways to expand the Italian-inspired culinary empire through his passion and craft for cooking. He joined forces with his son, Joey Maggiore, to launch The

Maggiore Group, which also operates Hash Kitchen, The Sicilian Butcher and The Sicilian Baker. In 2019, he opened Tomaso’s Italian Kitchen for a moderncasual experience with everyday Italian food, fresh pasta made daily, shareable boards, and entrees that are made here that taste like they were made in Italy.

Tomaso’s Italian Kitchen is a “come as you are,” approachable and family-friendly restaurant with a bright Dolce & Gabbana and Versace-esque design to complement its from-scratch menu. The menu offers simple, casual dishes inspired by the way Tomaso eats every day at home for happy hour and dinner. Tomaso’s Italian Kitchen offers approachable regional Italian cuisine incorporating the best of Tomaso’s dishes over the last 42 years. Influenced by Tomaso’s favorite Italian dishes from throughout his home country of Italy, the modern Italian restaurant features a menu full of fresh flavors and ingredients with a large focus on hand-cut and handmade stuffed pasta made daily including the restaurant’s new signature pasta boards which are perfect for family-style dining. The made-from-scratch pasta is complemented by fresh seafood and Tomaso’s essential Italian dishes such as cioppino and veal loin medallions. Tomaso’s

Italian Kitchen’s wine program has over 60 wine varieties including wine imported from the Maggiore’s family vineyard in Sicily. Tomaso’s Italian Kitchen offers happy hour all day, every day at the bar with special pricing on a variety of small plates, $6 wines, $5 beers and $7 bottled craft cocktails as well as a “board and bottle” deal for just $19. For ‘Wine Down Wednesdays,’ diners can enjoy hand-selected wines with a specialty paired menu with live music on the patio for just $25. For more, visit www.tomasositaliankitchen.com.
