For 38 years, the Mayor’s Ability Awards scholarships have served a profound purpose—to provide financial support to college or college-bound students who have demonstrated outstanding initiative in living with a disability and who have shown a genuine desire to continue their education at the college level. The scholarships are sponsored through a partnership with the Gila River Indian Community. This initiative underscores the importance of encouraging education and fostering inclusivity to students living with disabilities, recognizing their potential and empowering them to achieve their academic and professional goals. “Education is the key to unlocking endless possibilities,” says Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega. “The Mayor’s Ability Awards scholarships uplift individuals, so that through education, their intelligence is not overlooked because of outer disabilities.” Eligible Scottsdale students can submit their applications through March 1. To ensure a thorough and accurate completion of the scholarship application, students are advised to seek assistance from their local academic counselor or transitional counselor. Detailed scholarship information and eligibility requirements for parents and participants are available on the city’s website at scottsdaleaz.gov, search “Ability Awards.”

Waymo Accelerates Valley Transport with Autonomous Freeway Testing
WAYMO, THE AUTONOMOUS DRIVING TECHNOLOGY DIVISION OF ALPHABET INC., IS SET TO REDEFINE THE COMMUTE EXPERIENCE IN THE VALLEY THROUGH ITS LATEST INITIATIVE OF FREEWAY TESTING FOR ITS DRIVERLESS CARS.
This groundbreaking move, aimed at optimizing travel times and enhancing rider satisfaction, is a game-changer in urban mobility.
Waymo’s strategy of incorporating freeway routes is poised to substantially improve travel efficiency. The company highlights on their website: “Taking a freeway instead of a surface street in Phoenix can significantly improve a rider’s experience. For example, a trip from Sky Harbor Airport to the northern parts of Scottsdale can be 50% faster by taking AZ-101 compared to city streets.” The ability to utilize freeways will be especially important as they scale their operations to other cities. For this reason, they are laser focused on freeway ride hailing testing, according to their website.
myhyperlocalnews.com
The initial phase of freeway testing, involving Waymo’s employees, is set to roll out in the coming weeks. This phase is crucial for gathering feedback on routing and overall rider experience, which will be instrumental in refining the service for the public. Complementing the freeway testing, Waymo recently launched a curbside pickup and drop off service at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, currently available during night hours. This service acts as a stepping stone towards Waymo’s vision of providing 24/7 autonomous travel options.
Waymo’s progression into freeway testing is backed by a stringent safety framework, according to the company. “We continuously iterate and improve our technology and operations through a rigorous process that combines
structured testing, simulation, and public road operations,” their website states. This approach is fundamental to Waymo’s mission of ensuring safe and reliable autonomous vehicle operations. Waymo One, the company’s ridehailing service, currently spans more than 225 square miles in the Phoenix area, including key areas like Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe. Launched in 2018, Waymo One has been successfully providing over 10,000 trips to passengers every week. With more than 5.3 million miles driven in the Phoenix area, Waymo is uniquely positioned to lead the transition to autonomous freeway travel, significantly impacting urban transportation. Scottsdale Arts Celebrates Color with New Exhibition
SCOTTSDALE PUBLIC ART’S NEWEST EXHIBITION, “COLORLOVE,” RUNS THROUGH MARCH 30 AT SCOTTSDALE CIVIC CENTER LIBRARY AND CELEBRATES THE POWER OF THE WHOLE RAINBOW OF COLORS. Throughout history, humanity has examined, philosophized, questioned, and celebrated the full spectrum of color. Distinct colors can affect our moods in myriad ways: the peacefulness of blue, the intensity of orange, the wisdom of purple and the fresh promise of green. Wendy Raisanen, curator of collections and exhibitions for Scottsdale Public Art, hopes the exhibition will encourage viewers to think deeply about color. “I’ve always been interested in the psychology of color. Which colors make us feel energized or calm?” Raisanen askes. “We are all affected by color through artwork, our clothing, and our surroundings. I love saturated, intense colors; they just make my brain happy.” Artist and co-curator of “COLORLOVE” Lex Gjurasic is known as much for her love of color as for her artistic philosophy of “Radical Happiness,” which is, in her words, the “sacred act of choosing joy in the face of oppression and challenges.” “Colors and how they interact together has always been at the forefront of my creative process,” Gjurasic says. “While others may shy from the vibrational interplay of colors, I embrace that visual enthusiasm and lean into it. I can’t imagine a creative process without the patterns and interplay of color. For me, a world without color is a world void of emotion.” For Gjurasic, there is nothing more joyful than one’s own emotional response to color. An Arizona transplant, originally from the “dreary” myhyperlocalnews.com
John David Yanke’s painting “As Things Go” is featured in “COLORLOVE.”
Pacific Northwest, Gjurasic now finds personal solace in the intense psychedelic neon colors of the desert that she sees in her mind’s eye when she closes her eyes after staring directly at the sun. Gjurasic invites viewers into her vision of the world through the eyes of artists living and working in the arid desert. She presents two artworks in the exhibition: “Wet Grass 1” and “Enjoy Yourself, Take Only What You Need.” John David Yanke, another artist featured in “COLORLOVE,” is a painter and sculptor who exhibits his work locally and nationwide. His artwork “As Things Go” is informed by the intensely hued imagery of his sculptures that use manipulated bed springs, which also refer to compositions in music. “I remember my past through color because it triggers emotions I’ve lost, either intentionally or out of some imagined fright — fear coddling memory,” Yanke says. “My soul seems to digest and express those last sentences better through layered forms, shapes and colors.” After creative careers with HarleyDavidson Motorcycles, mural painting, and remodeling homes, Yanke now teaches upper-level drawing and painting and is an academic counselor. “COLORLOVE” will run from through March 30 at the Civic Center Public Gallery, inside Scottsdale Civic Center Library, 3948 N. Drinkwater Blvd. For more information, visit scottsdalepublicart.org/events.

According to the CDC, children and teens now spend an average of eight to nine hours in front of a screen daily, which can cause sensory overload and increase the risk of attention deficit disorders, anxiety, and depression. Too much screen time and limited experiences outdoors disproportionately affect children causing long-term developmental consequences. The local Grand Canyon Council Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA (Boy Scouts of America) programs encourage boys and girls to socialize, learn new skills, gain confidence, and participate in outdoor adventures such as hiking, camping, and canoeing. Scouting provides access to outdoor programs and activities designed with children and their families in mind who want to incorporate more outdoor exercise, have access to character development, all the while forming lasting bonds with their peers.
While Scouting is focused on teaching young people how to be prepared for life, it goes beyond helping the individual – parents and other family members may also benefit from Scouting by getting more quality time with their children. Scouting provides a safe environment to learn and make friends, not just for the kids, but for parents, too. As a parent, active involvement in your Scout’s troop helps foster a sense of community, helps build a network of support, and even helps enhance parenting skills. Community and the feeling of belonging are critical for everyone’s mental health, but especially today’s youth. Having a strong sense of social connection and spending time with people you love boosts self-esteem, promotes adaptability, and resilience, and is associated with improved overall quality of life. And spending time in nature has been proven to help focus, lower stress, boost your mood, and improve relationships. So, we encourage you to put down that phone, lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails! To learn more about getting involved in Scouting, visit scoutingaz.com. myhyperlocalnews.com

Creating Colorful Heart Art with Chromatography
T
his experiment introduces kids to the basics of chromatography, a technique used to separate mixtures. It's a fun and creative way to learn about the science of colors, capillary action, and how different substances interact with each other, all within a Valentine's Day theme.
MATERIALS NEEDED • Coffee filters or white paper towels • Washable markers in various colors (including red and pink) • A tall glass or jar filled halfway with water • Scissors • Pencil • A ruler (optional) • A shallow dish or plate • String or ribbon (for hanging, optional) • A notebook and pen for observations PROCEDURE
1. Preparing Your Paper • Use scissors to cut the coffee filters or paper towels into heart shapes. • With a pencil, draw a small line near the bottom edge of each heart.
2. Adding Color • Using the washable markers, draw a thick line along the pencil line. Use a combination of colors to see how they separate differently. 3. Chromatography Setup • Fill the glass or jar halfway with water. • Place the heart-shaped paper so that the very tip of the colored edge is touching the water. Be careful not to submerge the entire heart; only the very bottom should touch the water.
4. Observing the Colors Separate • As the water travels up the paper, it will carry the ink from the markers with it. 6. Creating Art • Observe as the colors start to spread • Once the water has reached near the and separate. TURF MONSTERS Won’t Trip You Up on Landscaping
16 • February 2024 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
myhyperlocalnews.com
artificial By Shay Moser
T
he “turf monster” may be the first thing that comes to mind when a player gets tripped up on the field, but it’s also the name behind the Valley’s award-winning artificial turf installation and landscaping company. Turf Monsters, says owner Mike Freeland, “provides highquality landscaping using the best materials and installation at a competitive price.” Opened in 2017, Turf Monsters offers more than artificial grass. It also provides custom putting greens, full-service landscaping, landscape lighting, trees and plants, pavers and patios, pergolas, and firepits and grills. DON’T TRIP ON THE COST Freeland says that because the company buys all its products in bulk, it can pass the savings on to customers. “We’re still coming in competitively priced compared to some of our competitors who install low-quality products,” he says. Word-of-mouth recommendations are also a factor in Turf Monsters’ success. “Friends and family want to know if someone had a good experience,” says Freeland. “A lot of our business comes from customers’ neighbors and relatives.” More proof of Turf Monsters’ work is in the more than 350 five-star Google reviews about its quality work, dependability, and trusted team.
“
Turf Monsters also customizes putting greens for small yard corners to entire areas. “Our professional installers help create a putting space for customers’ needs and budget,” Freeland says. Arizonans who want to practice golf on the hottest summer days can even work with Turf Monsters to create an indoor putting green. Pet-friendly turf For customers with pets, Turf Monsters offers pet-friendly turf designed with materials that are non-toxic, soft to the touch, and heat-resistant. FROM LIGHTING TO COMPLETE LANDSCAPING Landscape specialists work with customers to design comfortable and attractive lighting that will add aesthetics, curb appeal, and safety to outdoor spaces.
Save 55k gallons of water per year or more with artificial grass!
“We get people’s yards done right the first time,” Freeland says. “You never have to worry about who is working on your yard, and we stick to our deadlines.” Turf Monsters is also an artificial turf wholesaler. “It’s not always easy to find the right synthetic turf to make your outdoor space vision come to life,” explains Freeland. Additionally, Freeland says Turf Monsters has a good relationship with its distributors, which helps get more products for the money and discounted prices. He says the strong relationship with distributors also leads to a more efficient, cost-effective, and productive supply chain. “We didn’t have any product shortages during the pandemic.” WANT TO KICK SOME GRASS? Freeland says Turf Monsters’ artificial turf options feature a mix of olive green and field green turf fibers for artificial turf, putting greens, and pet-friendly turf. “It looks as real as it feels,” he says. Artificial turf Installation specialists help customers design their yards to fit their lifestyles and activities. myhyperlocalnews.com
Putting green turf Freeland says only the highest-grade putting turf available is used in their installs. “The synthetic fiber turf we use is durable, low-maintenance, and scuff-resistant,” he says.
”
“Landscape lighting lets you use your outdoor space long after the sun goes down,” says Freeland.” Besides artificial turf installation and maintenance, Turf Monsters offers tree and plant installation, maintenance, and landscape edging and trimming. Turf Monsters also offers water-saving irrigation services and custom-built fire pits and grills.
“We know the Arizona landscape can be harsh for trees and plants, so we help create a custom landscape design that is attractive and will thrive in the desert,” says Freeland. “But when you are looking for a low-maintenance design, paver installation is the way to go.” He says pergolas are also easy to care for and extend the outdoor living space.
Much of Turf Monsters’ products, including TigerTurf, the highest-quality synthetic grass, are made in America. Its custom fire pits and grills are also built with 100% American-made products.

Posh Pup Palaces: 10th Annual Design for Dogs Event Aids Arizona’s Homeless Animals Photos courtesy of Arizona Animal Welfare League
T
he Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) teams up with local architects, interior designers, and home builders for the 10th annual Design for Dogs event on Friday, Feb. 23. This unique fundraiser will feature swanky, custom-built doghouses to support AAWL’s mission in rescuing and caring for homeless pets. This year’s event is a special one, bringing together 10 “All Star” teams that have participated in previous Design for Dogs events. They are set to design, build, and donate luxurious doghouses, which will be auctioned off during the event. The highlight of the evening will be the “Best in Show” competition, where these pet palaces will be judged for their creativity and functionality. The money raised through this event is crucial for AAWL, Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, which supports over 4,000 homeless pets annually. The proceeds will directly fund life-saving programs, including low-cost vaccine clinics, rural rescue efforts, and a community vet clinic. The event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., will offer more than just an
auction. Attendees can enjoy music, raffle prizes, and the chance to meet adorable, adoptable dogs from AAWL. Each ticket holder will receive a ticket redeemable for two drinks, provided by local vendors. Founded in 1971 by a group of animal lovers, including Amanda Blake of “Gunsmoke” fame, AAWL has evolved from a small-scale operation into a full-service animal welfare organization. Over the past 50 years, AAWL has been a leader in innovative behavior training, medical care, adoption, and community outreach programs, especially focusing on rescuing animals from rural shelters in Arizona. Held at the Facings of America Showroom, located at 16421 N. 90th St., in Scottsdale, tickets for this caninecentric architectural showcase are priced at $55 for general admission and can be purchased at designfordogs.org. Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… Camelot Therapeutic in Scottsdale. They have an amazing program for children and adults with disabilities.
MY FAMILY INCLUDES… my boys and my parents. We all live here, so we are fortunate to get together often. It is absolutely the best. THE ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… my family. We are always here for each in good times and in bad. Especially my sister and best friend, Ellen. I couldn't do life without her. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY IS… "Something Borrowed" and "Sweet Home Alabama."
HI, MY NAME IS… Laurie AmesHusband. I’VE LIVED IN ARIZONA FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… of the climate and all the outdoor activities available. Of course, September may not be my favorite month when it is still very hot here and everywhere else in the country is cooling down. My family lives here and I love being close to them. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… working out, going to me and my husband's business to work, and then running errands. I travel quite a bit to ride my horses in Georgia, so that is a huge part of my life and day to day. Especially when I am getting ready for a horse show. The big Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is this month, and it is my favorite show.
WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO… work in journalism writing for a newspaper. I wrote for the newspaper in school, and it was fun and interesting.
THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… I have received many wonderful gifts. My children being one, but if we are talking material things, my horses would be it. I have had the privilege of owning some amazing horses and still do.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KAROKE NIGHT IS… “We are Family" with my family! THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… my family motivates me every day in some way, but I would say I am good at motivating myself. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… my new dogs, Millie and Poppy playing together.
MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… my dream vacation is anywhere I go with my husband, where we can forget about the everyday things in life and just spend time with each other. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED IS… I come from a family of hard, honest workers and I would say the best advice I have ever received is "treat others how you want to be treated." I try to remember that.
THE PERFECT DAY IS… I have a few perfect days. Spending time with my husband and my adult kids is a perfect day. My other perfect day is riding my horses and getting ready for a horse show. Horses are good for the soul and my family is very involved with Arabian horses. I have been showing off and on since I was 10. I have been doing it steadily as an adult since my kids were a little older. My niece will be showing at the Scottsdale show this month, so I am very excited about that.

Is Shoulder Pain Making You Retire Your Racket? injury, dealing him a double fault in his athletic pursuits.
By Non-Surgical Shoulder Pain Expert Dr. Matthew Hernandez, of Ethos Integrative Medicine
“D
o I have to quit tennis if I want to avoid surgery?” This was the first question Jerry lobbed at me as we sat in my office. His once-ace tennis game had been disrupted by a persistent rotator cuff
“I don’t know what else to do, doc. I’ve done e-stim, dry needling, physical therapy exercises — and I am still having pain. The orthopedic surgeon gave me a cortisone shot and told me I’d have to wait until the tear was bad enough for surgery — which also means I have to wait for the pain to get worse. And I can’t even play now.” THE ACES AND PAINS Jerry’s story is a common one in our office. He has done everything his insurance allows him to do, but he’s not making a “grand slam” recovery. The good news for Jerry is that there are options outside of insurance that allow him to get back to playing without shoulder pain. To better understand Jerry’s options, we need to look at why he isn’t better in the first place. The vast majority

of injuries are a result of repetitive, poor movement patterns, which cause wear and tear to the muscle and joint structures in the body. Jerry’s rotator cuff injury was a result of this poor movement pattern.
While the treatments he received focused on correcting the movement pattern, which is crucial, they missed the sweet spot in addressing the rotator cuff injury causing his pain. Sure, the cortisone injection provided temporary relief, but it also caused more damage to the tissue. EXPERIENCING A LITTLE DEUCE? Jerry found himself in what our team calls “The Gap” in orthopedic medicine — where conservative care is exhausted, surgery isn’t an immediate option, and waiting for the pain to get worse is the only choice. This is where regenerative medicine comes into play. With these treatments, Voted “Best of Scottsdale” and “Best of the Best” three years in a row in 2021, 2022 and 2023!
we were able to heal the rotator cuff and eliminate Jerry’s pain, allowing him to get back on the court and ace in tennis once again. Estate Planning for Incapacity By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
W
e think of estate planning as being about who will get your assets on your death. But it’s also about who will manage your assets and take care of you and your financial affairs if you become incapacitated. With proper planning, you decide that. Without proper planning, a court may get to make the choice. Incapacity means you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Incapacity can result from an accident, or arise from health issues, dementia, or plain old age. If you are alive but can’t take care of your financial matters, you need the right legal documents in place to be sure someone else can.
The revocable living trust is the best way to plan for incapacity. When you set up a revocable living trust, you transfer assets from your name to the name of your trust. While you are alive and well, you control your trust and assets as the trustee. You name a successor trustee to take over upon incapacity and on your death. That person steps into your shoes to take care of your financial affairs, without court intervention or constant reporting, court appearances, oversight, and scrutiny. All of your business stays private. If you recover your capacity to manage your affairs, you resume your role as trustee of your trust. The revocable living trust is a better way to address incapacity than a durable power of attorney – although both are necessary to a proper plan.
THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST: • Is readily accepted by financial institutions. • Holds a successor trustee to a high fiduciary standard. • Allows your successor trustee to begin quickly and efficiently managing your assets to care for you and your finances. With a revocable living trust in place, you can have peace of mind that you will be taken care of, and your finances will not fall into disarray if you are incapacitated. Another consideration is who will make health care decisions if you are unable to make them because of incapacity. You need three additional documents to assure you will be taken care of by those you want to be the decision makers. Those documents, called advance medical directives, include a healthcare power of attorney (sometimes also called a health care proxy), a living will, and a HIPAA authorization. These important documents work together to allow your chosen person to direct your health care if you become incapacitated. Be sure you are keeping these documents up to date. It’s a good idea to review your estate plan periodically and make sure it still meets your needs. We are happy to help you get an estate plan in place or review your existing plan. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By Tony Beal

words. Mann's skill as a filmmaker remains undiminished during his hiatus.
“Mayhem” In Thailand, an ex-gang member finds himself forced to return to that world after a family member is kidnapped.
“The Zone of Interest” The Höss family works towards their ideal life in the presence of Auschwitz. Jonathan Glazer's new movie presents a unique form of horror: watching a family lead a seemingly normal life overshadowed by an unspeakable evil. The commandant and his wife treat their situation as just another mundane job relocation, and from their detached perspective, it indeed appears so. The film masterfully restrains itself from showing the atrocities of the camp directly; we only hear fleeting moments of horror or catch glimpses of trains bringing more prisoners, all playing out in the background, accentuating the chilling indifference. Interestingly, the film's muted colors paradoxically highlight the beauty that the family seeks, yet this beauty is irrevocably tainted by the sinister reality that envelops them, regardless of their apparent apathy. Sandra Hüller’s portrayal of Hedwig, the wife, is particularly
Michael Mann returns with a film that echoes his previous work, yet it reframes his signature style through a sporting lens rather than the action films for which he is known (Collateral" and "Heat"). The tension and fear surrounding Ferrari and his company are subtly conveyed, yet they erupt boisterously in parts, from early arguments to the climactic final race. Its destructive nature feels inevitable, and you find yourself anxious about being caught in the crossfire. The racing scenes, in particular, are harrowing, matching the intensity of any gunfight in his other films. Adam Driver's performance is remarkable, especially in an early scene where he speaks to his late son. However, it is Penelope Cruz who astonishes with her portrayal of quiet heartbreak, delivered with minimal 24 • February 2024 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
remarkable. She embodies a detestable character, amplifying the already grim situation with her actions. By the film's end, you find yourself desperately wanting it to conclude, yet you remain captivated, unable to look away. “The Beekeeper” A man, who worked for a covert government organization, goes on a revenge mission following the death of someone close to him. "The Beekeeper" delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie, and this isn't necessarily a negative point. The action is genuinely enjoyable, with the stunt team executing some impressive work in the fight scenes. The film commendably embraces a level of silliness in its plot and cheesiness, reminiscent of old-school action movies like “Commando.” As for character development, it varies, with characters ranging from amusing to irritating. The film has a specific purpose, and it fulfills this role effectively. However, how much you appreciate it will largely depend on your personal taste.
It’s easy to label something as “brutal” these days, but Xavier Gens' latest action film, “Mayhem,” truly deserves the description. Over its 100-minute runtime, the film makes us almost tangibly feel the hurt and pain in its fight scenes. Every gunshot and bone break causes you to squirm, sparing no one from the visceral impact. Beyond the relentless action, the film incorporates a compelling noir element. It's not just an endless sequence of action scenes; it's the desperation felt by our lead character that adds depth. This sense of unrelenting panic never fades, enhancing the film's pacing. Once again, overseas action cinema continues to impress.

Why You Still Have Sciatica Pain (And How To Get Rid Of It For Good)
-By Leading USA Sciatica Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
I
s doing everyday things from standing up straight to finding comfortable sleeping positions and even just walking difficult because of sciatica pain? You may find it hard to focus on enjoying those around you because you’re distracted by your pain. You may have already tried chiropractic, massage, stretching, and exercise, but the difficulty is knowing which things will help and which won’t. This can be frustrating because it seems unpredictable. Some sciatica is caused by muscular weakness and restriction, while others can be caused by stiff joints. Ultimately, certain exercises may help some sciatica, but make other types worse. To best help you, I’ve compiled a list of tips that will help anyone with sciatica regardless of the type to reduce daily pain. Most people with sciatica just want to know if there’s a solution that actually lasts. Solutions that used to work, don’t work any longer. Eventually you find yourself in a rabbit hole, searching high and low for solutions that hopefully help you avoid surgery. One of my patients, Marian, had tried everything above on top of back surgery, unspecialized physical therapy, pain management, spinal injections, spinal electrostimulation, acupuncture, and dietary analysis. Marian told me, “When you go through this, you learn how many things you can no longer do if you can’t stand or walk.” You Don’t Have to Choose Between Surgery and Giving Up the Activities that You Love. Sciatica is so common because many of the solutions out there just take one area into consideration. The muscles, the joints, nerves, strength, weakness, etcetera. The simple truth is that sciatica is a complex condition with many contributing factors. The core issue, which has been proven time and again in the best research, is that the body has developed compensation patterns in order to protect itself. These patterns are hardwired into the brain, and will continue to persist unless they are fixed. This pattern is what CAUSES the tight muscles, and the stiff joints. These tight muscles and stiff joints eventually pinch the nerve, causing sciatica. Therefore, correcting the pattern is the true root cause. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills.

Leap Day
FEBRUARY 29, 2024 myhyperlocalnews.com
6 Reasons Why Your Sciatica May Be Lasting Longer than it Should: 1. You tried looking up exercises to do on your own for your sciatica. But with many “causes,” it’s difficult to figure out which exercises are right for you. This is why some exercises can seem to make it better, but some make it much worse. 2. You tried a few relaxing massages and it felt good for a few days but then it came back. 3. You tried chiropractic care and it eased a bit, but the nagging sensation is still there. 4. You tried waiting for it to go away on its own. That didn’t work… 5. You went to the doctor’s office, and they gave you pain meds or nerve medication to numb the pain. They told you to come back in 6 weeks if it didn’t work. 6. You went to a physical therapist who put you on the same exercises everyone else with sciatica gets…then they left you with an assistant who only half watched your technique. Why What You’ve Tried Hasn’t Worked If any of these things have happened to you, unfortunately it’s common. The issue with a lot of these methods is that they focus on addressing the symptoms, not the root cause of your sciatica.
What to Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your sciatica pain worse. Stretching: If you’ve been stretching to fix your sciatica and it hasn’t worked yet, it likely won’t. More often than not, sciatica has come up because of tight muscles. Stretching is for short muscles. Tight muscles are tight because they’re compensating for a weak muscle nearby. Stretching will relieve them for a little bit, but it will come back unless the weakness is resolved. Crossing Your Legs: Avoid crossing your legs at all costs. This can cause stretching in the back of your hip which compresses the sciatic nerve. It also causes twisting in your hips and pelvis which can put stress on the nerves in your back. Resting: Certain activities right now might make your sciatica worse, but that doesn’t mean you should restrict all of your movements. If certain things are painful, like walking, lifting, sitting, it’s important to find the root cause so you can start moving properly and stay active. How to Fix Sciatica for the Long Term So many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief because they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, sciatica pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. Marian learned this the hard way, and unfortunately a lot of people do. After addressing the root cause, Marian says, “I’m back to walking 3-4 miles a day; I can lift and hold my grandbabies; I can go to parties without having to sit in a corner; I can go shopping again.” The only thing she’d change? Finding a specialist to help her address the root cause sooner. “I could have avoided a lot of doctors’ appointments and needless and expensive treatments, not to mention losing a couple of years to my other attempts.”
How to Get Rid of Sciatica Pain for Good
