Mayo Clinic Purchases a 228-acre Land Parcel in North Phoenix to Develop a Biotechnology Corridor

By Jim McVeigh, Mayo Clinic Public Affairs Photos Courtesy of Mayo Clinic

MAYO CLINIC HAS ACQUIRED 228 ACRES OF LAND ADJACENT TO ITS CAMPUS IN NORTH PHOENIX, SECURING THE ABILITY TO EXPAND ITS PATIENT-CENTERED MODEL OF CARE AND PAVING THE WAY TO DEVELOP A TRANSFORMATIVE BIOTECHNOLOGY CORRIDOR.

The L-shaped parcel wraps around the existing Mayo Clinic Hospital campus and the Arizona State University Health Futures Center. The parcel extends from 56th Street to 64th Street, south of State Route 101. It was purchased from the Arizona State Land Department at a public auction in December 2021.

Developing this area of North Phoenix to support Mayo Clinic’s strategic vision and the “Discovery Oasis” biotechnology corridor has been a long-standing goal of Mayo Clinic, the City of Phoenix, the State of Arizona, and Arizona State University. The concept furthers Mayo’s mission of addressing humanity’s most serious and complex medical challenges while fueling local and state economic growth. Biotechnology collaborators will be invited to colocate in what is expected to become a dynamic corridor for advancing novel medical and health care solutions.

“Leading in the transformation of health care on behalf of patients everywhere is central to Mayo Clinic’s strategy. We believe the acquisition of this land is one of these opportunities, giving us a new canvas to co-create with innovators in science and biotechnology,” says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., CEO for Mayo Clinic.

“Mayo Clinic will use a portion of the land for continued expansion of our Phoenix campus and our patient-centered model of care,” explains Richard Gray, M.D., CEO for Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “But we also have a new opportunity to vision a biotech corridor, anchored by Mayo Clinic, where we invite collaborators to join us in pushing past the existing boundaries in medicine and health care. Discovery Oasis will be fertile ground in the desert, where new ideas can move rapidly from science to patient care solutions to biomanufacturing and broad application.”

Mayo Clinic’s purchase of the site for $139 million will benefit Arizona State Land Department beneficiaries, including state K-12 education. This commitment to education will be extended by land use that enriches the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, and the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care.

Mayo Clinic in Arizona is in the process of adding 1.6 million square feet to the Phoenix hospital campus as part of the “Arizona. Bold. Forward.” project — one of the largest capital expansions in the history of Mayo Clinic. By the close of 2023, through the generous support of benefactor funding, nearly 100 new patient beds will be added, as well as outpatient, education, and research spaces. Plans call for adding 100 more patient beds by 2030.

Crews Complete All Major Work on Loop 101 Widening Project

THE FINAL MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE LOOP 101 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE LAST SCHEDULED FULL WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR LANE-MARKING WORK, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT).

ADOT’s $185 million project, which started in January 2019, has added a fourth regular (general purpose) lane in each direction along 13 miles of Loop 101. Drivers have already been experiencing improved traffic flow along the wider freeway for several months while crews focused attention on other necessary work such as interchange enhancements, the addition of permanent, easier-to-see lane stripes, and the sealing of concrete deck joints.

Other improvements added during the Loop 101 project include:

• Wider bridges above cross streets, the

Central Arizona Project canal and area washes. • A new Loop 101 overpass above the city of Scottsdale’s planned Miller Road extension. • New freeway lighting and signs. • Noise barriers in areas where they are warranted. • New landscaping in several areas. • On- and off-ramps at interchanges reconstructed to fit the profile of the wider freeway. As with other freeway construction projects, crews will oversee a required landscape establishment period and take care of any other minor work. Drivers are asked to continue to stay alert for workers or equipment in the area. The Loop 101 Improvement Project has been funded as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.

Scottsdale Resident Shares His Lifelong Passion: Collecting Nearly Two Million Stamps

By Lin Sue Flood Photos Courtesy of Hospice of the Valley

IT WAS 1939 AND MONROE WINGATE WAS JUST 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS FATHER RETURNED HOME FROM A BUSINESS TRIP WITH A LITTLE PACKAGE OF GER-

MAN STAMPS. Two of them depicted an eagle circling the world with a swastika. Hitler’s invasion of Europe was all over the news and the young boy knew he was holding a piece of history.

Over the last 81 years, Monroe has cataloged 962,000 stamps using a software program that helps him keep track of what he has. But he is only halfway through his collection. “Honestly, I never met a stamp I didn’t like,” the 90-year-old says. “Some collectors specialize in butterfly stamps or something. But I love them all, and that’s my problem.”

Stamp collecting may have begun as a hobby, but now it’s his life’s work. “Every stamp tells a story,” he explains. “Commemorative ones celebrate statehood, for example. Others are pieces of art. They all have variations in watermarks and perforations. To me, every one of them is a miniature painting.”

After respiratory illness reduced Monroe’s mobility several years ago, he gave up sailing and golf, according to his wife Peggy. “But he’s never, ever bored,” she says. “He can sit for hours studying stamps, storing them in albums or deciding which ones to bid on in auctions.”

When Monroe’s Hospice of the Valley social worker, Thomas Corrigan, saw the extensive collection in the couple’s Scottsdale home, he felt compelled to introduce his patient to someone who would truly appreciate his passion for stamps.

“I just knew he would enjoy sharing what he’s been working on for decades,” Thomas says. Which is how, one sunny morning, Monroe met Kevin Lesk, president of the Phoenix Philatelic Association, who was duly impressed. “This is wonderful — the sort of thing you rarely encounter! Monroe is the epitome of a true collector who’s in it for the enjoyment and collecting for the love of it.”

The camaraderie was instant. Both men paged through heavy volumes holding hundreds of colorful stamps from faraway places. Some mark world events like the Olympic Games; others feature Hollywood legends or capture pieces of history like the trio of Graf Zeppelin stamps. That set was issued for letters that the airships carried to Europe in the 1930s. “When people share their collections, their stamps educate us — about the past or current events or art or culture,” Kevin says. “It’s a hobby for anyone who is curious about the world. And collecting isn’t just for the rich… it’s available on any budget.”

Enthusiasts and serious collectors alike will be attending the Aripex Stamp Show, Feb. 18-20 at the Mesa Convention Center. This year, 47 exhibitors will be displaying their collections. For details, visit aripex.org. Kevin will be there giving free appraisals to anyone who is wondering what their stamps may be worth.

Monroe won’t be at the show this year, but he’s already looking forward to Kevin’s next visit. “I love being able to share my collection,” he says. “I wish more people did it.”

Every Drop Counts: Scottsdale Asks Residents to Conserve Water

By Valerie Schneider, public information officer for the City of Scottsdale Graphic Courtesy of the City of Scottsdale

THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS ASKING ALL RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES, AND VISITORS TO CONSERVE THEIR WATER USAGE BY AT LEAST FIVE PERCENT AS THE STATE IS NOW OFFICIALLY IN TIER ONE OF A COLORADO RIVER SUPPLY SHORTAGE.

The water shortage was declared by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation last fall, with the implementation taking effect January 1. As a result, Central Arizona Project’s water supply will be reduced by 30 percent in 2022 with most of the cuts coming from agriculture.

While residents and businesses in Scottsdale will not see a shortage at their tap, everyone is asked to look at their water use and find better ways to conserve this precious resource.

To help residents conserve, Scottsdale Water has a list of ways residents and businesses can save. Since 70 percent of residential water is used outside, residents are encouraged to take some simple steps today that can make a big impact throughout the year.

FIVE WAYS TO SAVE WATER

• Adjust irrigation timers. Residents can sign up for a monthly reminder on adjusting their water by texting

WHENTOWATER to 33222. • Sign up for WaterSmart. This new portal allows users to manage their water use and set up notifications. Go to

ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “WaterSmart.” • Convert grass areas. Arizona-friendly landscape requires less than half the water that grass requires. Plus, residents may qualify to receive a rebate for the conversion. • Create a water budget. By using water calculators such as amwua.org/water-use-calculator, residents can determine how much they use and if their water usage is normal for their house/family size. • Request a free Outdoor Water Efficiency Check from an irrigation specialist. On average, Scottsdale Water experts can save a customer 4,000 gallons of water per month.

“Water conservation programs have been in place in Scottsdale for decades and many Scottsdale residents and business know their value,” says Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer. “Now, we need to step up our game and take water conservation to the next level. With less water coming to us from the Colorado River in 2022, we need to learn to live with less and that starts every time we turn on the tap, flush the toilet, or start our irrigation systems.”

Scottsdale was the first city in Arizona to declare Stage One of its Drought Management Plan (DMP). This declaration started what is forecasted to be a multi-year plan as river projections are forecasted to remain the same or decrease in the coming years.

At Stage One of Scottsdale’s DMP, water users are asked to reduce their water use. At Stage Two, increased water use restrictions and mandatory water conservation may be imposed by the City to include imposing a water shortage surcharge on one or more of the customer sectors and potential additional mandatory water use restrictions on water customers.

The City of Scottsdale is taking the lead in the community. With the activation of Scottsdale’s DMP, the City is finding ways to internally conserve water. In recent years Scottsdale Parks has significantly reduced turf and converted non-recreational grass areas to xeriscape; Facilities has converted faucets and toilets to low flow; and Scottsdale Water has audited different departments and facilities for water conservation efficiencies.

As part of the DMP, Scottsdale’s Drought Management Team is looking for better ways to conserve across the city and educate the public on better water conservation efforts. Just as Scottsdale is asking residents to conserve, it too has pledged to save five percent above and beyond the measures already being implemented. By working together, Scottsdale residents can achieve maximum sustainability for a prosperous future.
