Build Back Better Is Dead, But Your Chance to Secure Energy Independence Is Not
By Erick O’Donnell
“A
ll politics are local,” as a time-tested American saying goes. When considering climate change, the most urgent political issue of our time, we might instinctively balk at this old sawhorse. What, after all, could be less local a concern than the challenges posed by global warming? Yet a closer look reveals that regular people always have the power to effect major change if they are determined to do so, especially if they have the support of their community. All eyes were on the new administration over the past year as it tried to marshal support for its Build Back Better package of public investments—and for good reason. Among other provisions, the bill would have significantly enhanced incentives for green-energy investments, encouraging businesses and individuals to make the kinds of changes needed for the country to fulfill its carbon-reduction commitments. The plan stalled just before this past Christmas in the face of resistance from two Democratic senators. In explaining his refusal to back the bill, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin paid lip service to political ideals, but his considerable vested interest in the dying coal industry is hard to ignore. Kyrsten Sinema, one of our very own senators, remained enigmatic and noncommittal to the end, a puzzling stance toward a rare opportunity to harness her state’s most abundant natural resource—the sun’s energy. But no matter what powerful politicians are doing (or, more to the point, not doing) on the national stage to counteract climate change, there is always something regular people can do. More than 200,000 homeowners in Arizona have already installed solar systems, which produce enough electrical output to power almost a million homes, according to the Solar Energy Industry Association, and Arizonans are only getting started. You can secure dependable, affordable energy for yourself and your family while contributing to clean-energy self-sufficiency for America. And the professionals at SunSolar Solutions, a locally owned full-service solar installer, want to help—even if politicians don’t. New energy initiatives would have been a boon to homeowners and to American green energy as a whole. But 26 percent of the cost of a solar system is still a big chunk of change for Uncle Sam to kick in, and it’s still available until the end of this year. It’s vital, however, that you act soon to take advantage of this temporary generosity because it’s only good for
systems that are placed in service before January 1, 2023. On that date, the credit drops to 22 percent. SunSolar Solutions focuses on maximizing value for customers by leveraging the tax incentive to the hilt. By installing the greatest possible number of panels on your roof, you maximize the amount of money that the U.S. government will be investing in the system and into your home. If the 100 percent design created a $10,000 subsidy, then the 150-percent design will produce a $15,000 subsidy. There is no limit to the size of the system and, therefore, the size of the tax credit. The result of a properly designed system is a lower monthly and annual cost for the household’s electricity. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Our projections show that the average solar customer can expect to save an estimated $50,000 to $100,000 over a 25-year period. Our customer testimonials show that SunSolar is focused on maximizing savings by harnessing the greatest amount of solar energy possible (and, along with it, the greatest tax savings possible). Another big advantage to making the switch to solar as soon as possible is that the system will have time to generate the power needed to knock down this summer’s electricity costs. High summer demand causes higher utility charges, putting pressure on a family’s budget, but if you choose to start your project soon, the system can be installed in time to produce those essential credits. If you act right away, your system could even generate a bit of a surplus over late spring and early summer, helping to further offset the cost of peak summer demand later. The most significant congressional action in a generation to bolster American green energy is dead, and that has serious implications for how quickly and effectively we as a nation can respond to climate challenge. But now is not a good time to throw up your hands and get cynical. It’s time to act. Remember: it’s not up to Joe Manchin whether America—or your household—secures the blessings of reliable, affordable, clean energy. It’s up to you. And SunSolar Solutions is here to help you make the transition. Contact SunSolar Solutions today at 623-562-9009 to have a design prepared for your home free of charge.

Mayo Clinic Purchases a 228-acre Land Parcel in North Phoenix to Develop a Biotechnology Corridor By Jim McVeigh, Mayo Clinic Public Affairs Photos Courtesy of Mayo Clinic MAYO CLINIC HAS ACQUIRED 228 ACRES OF LAND ADJACENT TO ITS CAMPUS IN NORTH PHOENIX, SECURING THE ABILITY TO EXPAND ITS PATIENT-CENTERED MODEL OF CARE AND PAVING THE WAY TO DEVELOP A TRANSFORMATIVE BIOTECHNOLOGY CORRIDOR. The L-shaped parcel wraps around the existing Mayo Clinic Hospital campus and the Arizona State University Health Futures Center. The parcel extends from 56th Street to 64th Street, south of State Route 101. It was purchased from the Arizona State Land Department at a public auction in December 2021. Developing this area of North Phoenix to support Mayo
Clinic’s strategic vision and the “Discovery Oasis” biotechnology corridor has been a long-standing goal of Mayo Clinic, the City of Phoenix, the State of Arizona, and Arizona State University. The concept furthers Mayo’s mission of addressing humanity’s most serious and complex medical challenges while fueling local and state economic growth. Biotechnology collaborators will be invited to colocate in what is expected to become a dynamic corridor for advancing novel medical and health care solutions. “Leading in the transformation of health care on behalf of patients everywhere is central to Mayo Clinic’s strategy. We believe the acquisition of this land is one of these opportunities, giving us a new canvas to co-create with innovators in science and biotechnology,” says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., CEO for Mayo Clinic. “Mayo Clinic will use a portion of the land for continued expansion of our Phoenix campus and our patient-centered model of care,” explains Richard Gray, M.D., CEO for Mayo Clinic in Arizona. “But we also have a new opportunity to vision a biotech corridor, anchored by Mayo Clinic, where we invite collaborators to join us in pushing past the existing boundaries in medicine and health care. Discovery Oasis will be fertile ground in the desert, where new ideas can move rapidly from science to patient care solutions to biomanufacturing and broad application.” Mayo Clinic’s purchase of the site for $139 million will benefit Arizona State Land Department beneficiaries,
including state K-12 education. This commitment to education will be extended by land use that enriches the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, and the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University Alliance for Health Care. Mayo Clinic in Arizona is in the process of adding 1.6 million square feet to the Phoenix hospital campus as part of the “Arizona. Bold. Forward.” project — one of the largest capital expansions in the history of Mayo Clinic. By the close of 2023, through the generous support of benefactor funding, nearly 100 new patient beds will be added, as well as outpatient, education, and research spaces. Plans call for adding 100 more patient beds by 2030.
Crews Complete All Major Work on Loop 101 Widening Project New lanes, improvements finished along 13 miles of Pima Freeway Photo Courtesy of Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) THE FINAL MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE LOOP 101 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IN THE NORTH VALLEY HAVE BEEN COMPLETED FOLLOWING THE LAST SCHEDULED FULL WEEKEND CLOSURE FOR LANE-MARKING WORK, ACCORDING TO THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (ADOT). ADOT’s $185 million project, which started in January 2019, has added a fourth regular (general purpose) lane in each direction along 13 miles of Loop 101. Drivers have already been experiencing improved traffic flow along the wider freeway for several months while crews focused attention on other necessary work such as
interchange enhancements, the addition of permanent, easier-to-see lane stripes, and the sealing of concrete deck joints. Other improvements added during the Loop 101 project include: • Wider bridges above cross streets, the Central Arizona Project canal and area washes. • A new Loop 101 overpass above the city of Scottsdale’s planned Miller Road extension. • New freeway lighting and signs. • Noise barriers in areas where they are warranted. • New landscaping in several areas. • On- and off-ramps at interchanges reconstructed to fit the profile of the wider freeway.
4 • February 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
As with other freeway construction projects, crews will oversee a required landscape establishment period and take care of any other minor work. Drivers are asked to continue to stay alert for workers or equipment in the area.
The Loop 101 Improvement Project has been funded as part of the Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region. Projects in the plan are funded in part by Proposition 400, a dedicated half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004. myhyperlocalnews.com

Scottsdale Resident Shares His Lifelong Passion: Collecting Nearly Two Million Stamps By Lin Sue Flood Photos Courtesy of Hospice of the Valley IT WAS 1939 AND MONROE WINGATE WAS JUST 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS FATHER RETURNED HOME FROM A BUSINESS TRIP WITH A LITTLE PACKAGE OF GERMAN STAMPS. Two of them depicted an eagle circling the world with a swastika. Hitler’s invasion of Europe was all over the news and the young boy knew he was holding a piece of history. Over the last 81 years, Monroe has cataloged 962,000 stamps using a software program that helps him keep track of what he has. But he is only halfway through his collection. “Honestly, I never met a stamp I didn’t like,” the 90-year-old says. “Some collectors specialize in butterfly stamps or something. But I love them all, and that’s my problem.” Stamp collecting may have begun as a hobby, but now
it’s his life’s work. “Every stamp tells a story,” he explains. “Commemorative ones celebrate statehood, for example. Others are pieces of art. They all have variations in watermarks and perforations. To me, every one of them is a miniature painting.” After respiratory illness reduced Monroe’s mobility several years ago, he gave up sailing and golf, according to his wife Peggy. “But he’s never, ever bored,” she says. “He can sit for hours studying stamps, storing them in albums or deciding which ones to bid on in auctions.” When Monroe’s Hospice of the Valley social worker, Thomas Corrigan, saw the extensive collection in the couple’s Scottsdale home, he felt compelled to introduce his patient to someone who would truly appreciate his passion for stamps. “I just knew he would enjoy sharing what he’s been working on for decades,” Thomas says. Which is how, one sunny morning, Monroe met Kevin Lesk, president of the Phoenix Philatelic Association, who was duly impressed. “This is wonderful — the sort of thing you rarely encounter! Monroe is the epitome of a true collector who’s in it for the enjoyment and collecting for the love of it.” The camaraderie was instant. Both men paged through heavy volumes holding hundreds of colorful stamps from faraway places. Some mark world events like the Olympic Games; others feature Hollywood legends or capture pieces of history like the trio of Graf Zeppelin stamps. That set was issued for letters that the airships carried to Europe in the 1930s.
“When people share their collections, their stamps educate us — about the past or current events or art or culture,” Kevin says. “It’s a hobby for anyone who is curious about the world. And collecting isn’t just for the rich… it’s available on any budget.” Enthusiasts and serious collectors alike will be attending the Aripex Stamp Show, Feb. 18-20 at the Mesa Convention Center. This year, 47 exhibitors will be displaying their collections. For details, visit aripex.org. Kevin will be there giving free appraisals to anyone who is wondering what their stamps may be worth. Monroe won’t be at the show this year, but he’s already looking forward to Kevin’s next visit. “I love being able to share my collection,” he says. “I wish more people did it.” Lin Sue Flood is the Community Engagement Director at Hospice of the Valley. THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE IS ASKING ALL RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES, AND VISITORS TO CONSERVE THEIR WATER USAGE BY AT LEAST FIVE PERCENT AS THE STATE IS NOW OFFICIALLY IN TIER ONE OF A COLORADO RIVER SUPPLY SHORTAGE.
go where you want to go...
The water shortage was declared by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation last fall, with the implementation taking effect January 1. As a result, Central Arizona Project’s water supply will be reduced by 30 percent in 2022 with most of the cuts coming from agriculture. While residents and businesses in Scottsdale will not see a shortage at their tap, everyone is asked to look at their water use and find better ways to conserve this precious resource. To help residents conserve, Scottsdale Water has a list of ways residents and businesses can save. Since 70 percent of residential water is used outside, residents are encouraged to take some simple steps today that can make a big impact throughout the year.
FIVE WAYS TO SAVE WATER • Adjust irrigation timers. Residents can sign up for a monthly reminder on adjusting their water by texting WHENTOWATER to 33222. • Sign up for WaterSmart. This new portal allows users to manage their water use and set up notifications. Go to ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “WaterSmart.” • Convert grass areas. Arizona-friendly landscape requires less than half the water that grass requires. Plus, residents may qualify to receive a rebate for the conversion. • Create a water budget. By using water calculators such as amwua.org/water-use-calculator, residents can determine how much they use and if their water usage is normal for their house/family size. • Request a free Outdoor Water Efficiency Check from an irrigation specialist. On average, Scottsdale Water experts can save a customer 4,000 gallons of water per month. “Water conservation programs have been in place in Scottsdale for decades and many Scottsdale residents and business know their value,” says Scottsdale Water Executive Director Brian Biesemeyer. “Now, we need to step up our game and take water conservation to the next level. With less water coming to us from the Colorado River in 2022, we need to learn to live with less and that starts every time we turn on the tap, flush the toilet, or start our irrigation systems.” Scottsdale was the first city in Arizona to declare Stage myhyperlocalnews.com

One of its Drought Management Plan (DMP). This declaration started what is forecasted to be a multi-year plan as river projections are forecasted to remain the same or decrease in the coming years. At Stage One of Scottsdale’s DMP, water users are asked to reduce their water use. At Stage Two, increased water use restrictions and mandatory water conservation may be imposed by the City to include imposing a water shortage surcharge on one or more of the customer sectors and potential additional mandatory water use restrictions on water customers. The City of Scottsdale is taking the lead in the community. With the activation of Scottsdale’s DMP, the City is finding ways to internally conserve water. In recent years Scottsdale Parks has significantly reduced turf and converted non-recreational grass areas to xeriscape; Facilities has converted faucets and toilets to low flow; and Scottsdale Water has audited different departments and facilities for water conservation efficiencies. As part of the DMP, Scottsdale’s Drought Management Team is looking for better ways to conserve across the city and educate the public on better water conservation efforts. Just as Scottsdale is asking residents to conserve, it too has pledged to save five percent above and beyond the measures already being implemented. By working together, Scottsdale residents can achieve maximum sustainability for a prosperous future.

Neighbors
Hello Neighbor! Photos by Taylor Hotter HI, MY NAME IS... Kristen Shroyer, cofounder of ONEHOPE Wine.
MY FAMILY IS… My incredibly supportive husband, Brad, and our two daughters, Jessica (9) and Allie (7). ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… My family. They are the light of my life. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… “The Greatest Showman.” I love everything about it – from the phenomenal music to its message of pursing your wildest dreams and being confident in your own skin. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A news anchor. At Chaparral High School, I anchored “The Firebird Word” with my best friend and we had so much fun.
I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE MY WHOLE LIFE AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The incredible weather, magical sunsets, and that it’s home to so many of my friends and family.
THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… “The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing, but I’d need a partner for the duet and for the famous lift!
A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I always start my day with an early morning Orangetheory workout. Then I hop right into work with Zoom meetings nearly all day, often into the night, with my incredible ONEHOPE Wine team. My evenings are a mix of homework help, carpooling to sports practices, trying to get dinner on the table, and hopefully having enough time to enjoy a TV show with my husband before bed. Of course, I also try to enjoy a glass of wine (or two!) before bed. 14 • February 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME THE MOST ARE… My daughters. They motivate me to be my best self every day. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… My daughter’s Girl Scout cookie pitch video. Last year, she went viral – from “People” magazine to “Good Morning America” – for her socially distanced Girl Scout cookie sales in the Valley. This year, she made a music video parody about all the cookies she has for sale to the tune of the “Fancy Like…” country song. THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… Just being outdoors and enjoying all that Scottsdale has to offer with my family! It would include a morning hike, afternoon by the pool, bike ride to our favorite local restaurant, and a glass of wine. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… It’s hard to choose just one. I serve on the board of the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Foundation, working with partners to support our local school district to ensure all students achieve educational excellence. As an SUSD alumna, with children in SUSD, and family members employed by SUSD, it’s a cause that’s near and dear to my heart. In addition, through ONEHOPE Foundation, which I co-founded, we’ve made $7.5 million in donations to Valley nonprofits over the past 14 years. We also launched a direct-toconsumer program where anyone can host a ONEHOPE wine tasting to help fundraise for a nonprofit of choice, and we have a wine club where you can have
our winemaker curate wines for you, or you can pick and choose yourself. MY LIFE IS… Crazy, chaotic, and stressful many days, but also exciting and so much fun. I wouldn’t change a thing. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… An engagement ring from my husband. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE… Anywhere on a warm and sunny beach, without a cell phone. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED... Work hard and be kind to others. My dad, who is also a Scottsdale native, always taught me that. He is the hardest working and kindest person I have ever known. myhyperlocalnews.com

Specifically, what attracted Neill to these individuals was their heart and their work ethic – a combination that his clients need. Veterans and service professionals offer reliability and quality from people who have a heart to serve. What’s more, Neill is offering these individuals a freedom they may not have experienced before. “I will give them business and help them build up their clientele,” Neill says. “It can be as big or as little as they like, and there are a lot of perks that come with it.” Those looking to join the True Method Independent Business Owner program don’t need pool care experience. True Method helps to train and set up each new team member, which ensures their success. Show Some Love to Your Family this Valentine’s Day
Kids’ Corner
“T
By Nadine Bubeck
here is only one happiness in life: to love and be loved.”
Valentine’s Day is a reminder that affection and unconditional love can make children emotionally happier and boost their confidence. Sure, it’s a time to celebrate the love you share with your significant other, but it’s also an opportunity to reinforce the importance of loving — and being loved — within the family. Here are seven ways to celebrate the holiday with kids. AFFIRMATION HEARTS Leave a heart on your child’s door each day of February until Valentine’s Day with something you love about them. Be specific in your compliments to make them feel extra special. Address their inner beauty: what makes them a good kid, sibling, son, daughter, student, etc. This is so easily done, nearly free and incredibly rewarding.
PLAN SOME QUALITY TIME Especially true for parents with multiple kids, individual time with each child can be hard to come by. Plan a date with each of your kids separately—truth be told, time is the greatest gift we could give someone. Honor their interests; for example, if one of your children loves art, take a parent-and-child painting class. If another child loves sports, allot time to picnic in the park and play catch. It doesn’t need to be over the top. REVERSE THE ROLES Let the kids play parents for the night. Allow them to cook you and your significant other dinner and dessert— you’ll be surprised how much they’ll enjoy role-playing waiter and waitress. Suggest they make you Valentine’s Day cards and decorate the dinner table with heart-infused drawings. Date night at home courtesy of the kids—score! If you don’t have a partner, let your kids oversee a night out for your family or you and your bestie. Love comes in all forms.
SCHEDULE A FAMILY DATE NIGHT Whether it’s movie night, game night, or craft night, celebrate Valentine’s Day by doing something special in the comfort of home. Order pizza, make popcorn, and wear PJs, and simply enjoy being in one another’s company. For dessert, decorate heart-shaped cookies.
different kinds of love. There are so many kid-friendly books on the topic, too!
DELIVER VALENTINES Chances are your kids will be making Valentines for all their classmates, but you can take this a step further by making Valentines for friends and family. In fact, you can also show the community some love by delivering cookies to your local fire station or police department. Practicing appreciation is a good lesson of love to teach your kids.
CONSIDER THE SIMPLE THINGS Sure, there are so many cliches when it comes to V-Day, but sometimes the most important Valentine’s Day message isn’t in the form of something monetary. As parents, all we want is to make sure our kids feel safe, secure, and loved, but how can we do that aside from telling them we love them? Simple ideas include showing physical affection, reading together, and showing enthusiasm in what they’re talking about, what they’re doing, etc. Let them dream, listen to their dreams, and encourage them to work toward pursuing them. Show your family some love this Valentine’s Day and every day.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE Kids learn most from their parents and caregivers, so for them to learn love, they must be shown love. If you’re in a romantic relationship, show them photos and talk about it. If you’re not, point to friendships and other relationships and talk about the

Putting a do-it-yourself plan in place or using a non-expert: Sometimes we need to call in experts. We don’t know what we don’t know. We wouldn’t perform our own surgery, and it’s wise to hire a lawyer for your estate plan as well. An attorney who focuses on estate planning knows the ins and outs of the law and can suggest provisions for your plan that you don’t even know about. If you don’t use an attorney and make a serious mistake, it may be too late when your family finds out.
HAVING A PROPER PLAN MEANS YOU AVOID SOME OF THESE BIG MISTAKES:
Keeping your “older-than-the-hills” estate plan: Good for you if you did a Will when your children were born, but if they now have their own children, it is time to update your plan. If your assets have grown, you may want to consider a trust, and rethink how you are leaving your assets to your heirs. Laws changed in Arizona in 2008, and estate taxes have changed over the years and continue to change. It is important to keep your plan current.
Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by 60 percent of Arizonans. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The state of Arizona has one for you, but it may not be what you want. Put your own plan
If you are ready to show your love with an estate plan, you can call my office for a complimentary initial consultation or review of your existing plan at 602-3756752, visit my website at libbybanks.com, or e-mail me at Libby@libbybanks.com.
A proper estate plan makes it much easier on your loved ones if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a proper estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family will have an expensive and timeconsuming ordeal ahead of them, and worse, they may end up fighting.

Possible Health Insurance Benefits with a Naturopathic Physician By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
B
oard certified and licensed naturopathic physicians in the state of Arizona are not typically contracted with insurance companies and therefore do not accept insurance for office visits. The good news is that many patients can utilize some of their insurance benefits. I always recommend that patients contact their insurance company prior to visits to inquire about possible coverage. OUT OF NETWORK CLAIMS Some insurance companies may consider naturopathic physicians as out-of-network providers. Insurance companies may be able to reimburse you for partial or all your visits with proper documentation. At the time of your visit, you will be provided with the necessary forms, which include Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and diagnostic codes (ICD-10). You can submit these forms along with your receipt to your insurance for possible reimbursement. This may be a mail-in form or an online form with uploaded documentation and receipts. The reimbursement amount will depend on your specific plan. HSA/FSA Some insurance plans offer a Health Spending Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA). These accounts can be used to pay for naturopathic visits at the time of service and may also be used for nutritional supplement purchases and specialty labs. Any extra documentation can be provided and approval will be dependent on your specific plan. LABORATORY SERVICES AND IMAGING If you have private insurance and your plan covers routine lab work and/ or imaging, naturopathic physicians can order particular laboratory testing and imaging through your insurance. Sonora Quest and LabCorp are usually
myhyperlocalnews.com
the preferred labs for most insurance companies here in Arizona. If you do not carry private insurance or do not have lab work or imaging coverage, there are cash pay options available depending on your specific needs. Specialty labs such as Food Sensitivity IgG testing, Comprehensive Stool Analysis and others are not covered by insurance and are either paid at the time of purchase or directly to the specific specialty laboratory. MEDICARE/MEDICAID AND AHCCCS Naturopathic physicians are not eligible to be providers with Medicare/Medicaid as well as state insurance (AHCCCS). Due to this, there are no options for possible reimbursement of visit costs. Unfortunately, there is no laboratory or imaging coverage if ordered by a naturopathic physician. In this situation, labs can be ordered at cash pay facilities for reasonable pricing. To inquire more regarding possible insurance reimbursement options with a naturopathic physician, contact your insurance company or call my office at 480-448-8888. Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.
What Your Doctor Forgot To Tell You About Your Back Pain By Leading USA Back Pain Expert, Dr. Tom Padilla
D
o you have to continually do things like stretch or get massages to loosen up your back and avoid pain? Is your doctor telling you that your solution options consist of rest, surgery, and pain killers? Living with a stiff back is one of the #1 frustrations for people with any sort of back pain. The first time it happens, you might just ignore it. As it gets more consistent, you might think “I guess I’m getting older now.” However, back stiffness isn’t age related. Living with a stiff back affects people of all ages. In fact, a significant number of people in their 20s and 30s deal with this just like their 60-plus-year-old counterparts. The question then becomes, if it’s not an age thing, what is it? If you’re active and conventional advice like resting and “taking it easy” isn’t working for you, you don’t have to choose between surgery and giving up the activities that you love. We see this scenario all the time in our clinic. In fact, over 80% of the cases that come through our doors have a component of chronic back pain. Just recently, Jessica came to us with back pain that had been giving her problems since having her second child... which was 10 years ago. She’d tried yoga, stretching, strength training, massage, chiropractic, and even physical therapy. Each of these things helped a little bit, but the pain always seemed to come back. Until she followed our advice. There’s no such thing as having a “bad back.” Eighty percent of back pain is reversible. No matter how long you’ve suffered, you can still get your life back. No surgery. No pills. The 5 Most Common “Fixes”... That Don’t Work Long Term • Getting a New Mattress: One of our clients tried over six different mattresses before seeing us. (Spoiler: They didn’t help.) • Stretching: It helps for a little bit, but the pain will keep coming back because it doesn’t address the root cause of the pain. • Hot-packs or hot showers: These feel good in the moment and help get blood-flow to the muscles, but again, this is only a temporary fix. • Painkillers or Anti-Inflammatories: As you probably know, the pharmaceutical industry is getting slammed with lawsuits for pushing opioids they knew were addictive. Taking pills may provide temporary relief, but at the expense of your other organs. (Worse than stretching and heat, this isn’t even a temporary fix, it’s just masking the underlying issue.) • Doing Nothing: This is pretty common. People start and stop treatment plans because they get frustrated when nothing seems to work long term, leading them to think they just have a “bad back.” What Most Doctors Forget To Tell You The #1 thing that most doctors forget to tell their patients is that hydration may be playing a role in your back stiffness. Muscles need oxygen to relax. For oxygen to get carried to the tissues, you need blood that flows easily. When you’re dehydrated, your blood doesn’t flow as easily through your body. Without enough oxygen, your muscles continue to stiffen, reducing the blood-flow even further. It’s a vicious cycle. Staying hydrated won’t completely reverse your back stiffness on its own, but it’s one component of stiffness. But if you’ve never been told that… what else are you missing? What To Avoid Here are 3 things that can make your back pain worse.
Lollygagging: Believe it or not, your pace matters. When you’re browsing at the mall, you sway back and forth a little bit because you’re not really using your muscles. Have you noticed that the longer you casually browse, the more your back starts to hurt until you need to take a break? Crossing Your Legs: This is a biggie. When you cross your legs, it can put pressure on your spine, causing it to rotate or bend to the side. This puts more pressure on joints that are already arthritic. Ignoring It: Believe it or not, if this strategy hasn’t worked for you up until now, you’re not getting closer to a breakthrough. Trust me, there’s no prize for persistence in this category. How to Fix Back Pain for the Long Term Back pain isn’t caused by a “bad back,” and it’s not fixed by stretching or surgery or pain pills. Back pain is caused by fatigued, overworked muscles that have to work overtime because your brain has stopped using the smaller stabilizing muscles to do their jobs. The problem is in the communication between your brain and your body. This is the reason so many of the “solutions” we try only provide temporary relief–they’re not targeting the root cause. And without getting to the source of the problem, back pain will continue to return because the cause was never addressed. So how do you fix back pain? You retrain the brain. Exercises that remind your brain which muscles to use and in what order get to the source of your back pain to keep it from returning (or getting worse). Tips and Exercises to Crush Back Pain for Good Our special back pain report is full of more tips and exercises to ease your pain fast and change the way your brain works for the long term so you can get back to picking up your kids, playing your sports, or just tying your shoes. Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal
IN THEATERS
The director does a good job showing us their lives, day by day as they continue to destroy themselves and each other, convinced some salvation still awaits them. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and tragic all at once—the best kind of film.
chase scenes and kills, but the writing only provides laughable connections to the original film and the usual “Scream” archetypes, giving their actors little to work with (though Jack Quaid and Jenna Ortega stand out well). By the end, it leaves you feeling, if not empty, unfulfilled, and sad watching all that talent wasted.
better made for the stage than film. It’s a noble attempt at a retelling, but it feels flat.
COMING SOON
ON APPLE TV+ “Nightmare Alley” A con man’s rise and fall, told in two acts from the circus to the highest part of society as he schemes his way with his fake psychic powers. Guillermo del Toro has always made films that can best be described as dark fairy tales, with their heightened sense of reality and unique designs and visuals. With his new film, he changes it up, slamming the film into harsh, wet reality, with only his heightened production design remaining. Nightmare Alley is a cold, bleak movie with little hope or light to be found as we watch our characters kill, cheat, and abandon each other for their gain. The actors perfectly reach their different levels of habitability, watching them slowly get further into the underbelly of the world they live in. Slow is a good word to describe this movie, one that wants you to experience every second of its ugly reality. It’s a watch that requires you to be patient, but if you stick with it, it rewards you well. “Red Rocket” A down-and-out actor’s journey to success as he moves back to his hometown. The events in “Red Rocket” are like a very humorous accident, one you can’t look away from as it gets worse and worse. Simon Rex’s performance as Mikey Saber is one of the best “scumbag” lead characters I’ve seen in recent years, a character that completely lacks selfawareness and is filled with delusions of grandeur. The supporting cast is filled with other colorful characters played by all sorts of discoveries by Sean Baker. myhyperlocalnews.com
February 4 • “Moonfall” “Scream” Twenty-five years after the original murders, a new killer arrives, forcing the original survivors to unite with a new generation to stop them. I’m likely biased in this case as, outside of the fourth film, I’ve never really cared for “Scream” and only saw this new film due to the involvement of the filmmakers behind 2019’s excellent horror-comedy “Ready Or Not.” With this new installment, you get a meta take on legacy sequels and their family relations in typical “Scream” fashion (even despite the new directors and writers). As per usual with these movies (beyond the surprisingly clever fourth film from 2011), it’s obnoxious, to say the least and doesn’t have anything of intrigue to bring up. The directors do bring some good set pieces with the
• “Jackass Forever” “The Tragedy of Macbeth” A retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic play. As an exercise in visuals, Joel Coen’s solo debut as a director works. The minimalist production design is a sight to behold and, mixed with the black and white photography, it reminds one of classic German expressionism. Beyond that, if you’ve seen a prior version of Macbeth you’ve basically seen this one, as there’s little that this version offers to differ from prior versions. The most is the bigger stars than other film adaptations, and unfortunately, the main two leads, Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, are miscast and don’t fit the devious nature of the characters. The other actors fare better, but the filmmaking and performances feel

Should You Consider Your Home a Retirement Asset? Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA™, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®
I
f you own a home, chances are your net worth has shot up in the last year. According to a new report, skyrocketing home prices caused by a pandemicfueled real estate frenzy have led to a scenario where homeowners in the U.S. are sitting on a record $22.7 trillion worth of home equity.1 Seeing the estimated value of your home increase on real estate sites can be exciting, especially if you’re counting on that money to one day help fund your lifestyle in retirement. But it’s important to remember that real estate is a more complicated asset than cash. Keep these factors in mind as you consider how the value of your home may be used to bankroll your retirement. 1.

have expected. It’s important to keep a pulse on the housing market in your area to help determine what you may be able to get for your home. Determining a home’s value can be difficult. Compared with a stock, bond or mutual fund that can readily be priced in the market and bought or sold daily, a home is a different kind of investment. The value can’t be precisely determined, and it is not considered to be as much of a liquid asset. If you’re serious about selling your home, it may be worthwhile to hire a professional appraiser to give you a realistic sense of how much you can expect to a buyer to pay you for it.
Keeping these factors in mind, it’s important to maintain a proper perspective about the value of your home in the context of your overall financial picture. Be careful not to overestimate a home’s contribution to your retirement security based on its current valuation, because those numbers can change. Even as your home is appreciating in value, remain diligent about saving for retirement in other ways, such as through a workplace savings plan or an IRA.
You need somewhere to live. Whether it is in your current house or somewhere else, you need a roof over your head, and that usually comes with a sizeable cost. Experience an Oasis of Tranquility at Royal Palms Resort and Spa THE PERFECT LOCAL ESCAPE FOR RELAXATION, ROMANCE, AND RICH ARIZONA HISTORY
R
oyal Palms Resort and Spa is one of the most sought-after resort experiences in the Valley, combining the graciousness and sophistication of a Mediterranean villa with the intimacy and privacy of a secluded luxury retreat. The resort was originally built in 1929 as El Vernadero, a wellness retreat for Cunard Steamship executive and financier Delos Cooke and his wife. The Cookes modeled their home and architecture after their beloved European adventures and used much of their income to purchase and plant rare flora, including 900 palms, many imported from Egypt. The original mansion still sits at the center of the resort today. Following Cooke’s 1931 death, the estate changed hands several times until visionary Al Stovall purchased the property in the 1940s. Stovall and his partners guided the estate’s transition from private home to inn, adding 15 casitas and converting the main house into several additional guest rooms, a reception area, and dining space. In 1948, the Royal Palms Inn officially opened to guests, and the first reservations were recorded. Local businessman Fred Unger purchased the property in 1995 and was responsible for the hotel’s 1996-1997 restoration, which brought to life the property today known as Royal Palms Resort and Spa. Royal Palms Resort boasts 119 beautifully appointed guest rooms, casitas, and luxury villas each designed to emulate a classic Spanish estate. Warm desert hues and rich woods are complemented by natural sunlight billowing through the windows with each room offering views of the perfectly manicured resort grounds. Deluxe rooms and suites boast breathtaking views of the iconic Camelback Mountain while the resort’s villas feature stone floors, fireplaces, and private patios for an added touch of serenity and luxury. A not-to-be-missed experience at Royal Palms Resort is the signature Alvadora Spa, an eight-room spa and wellness oasis that integrates the indoors and outdoors in a warm, welcoming environment. Alvadora Spa boasts an impressive treatment menu offering organic therapies and massages to help guests achieve the ultimate state of relaxation and restoration for both body and soul. Inspired by the property’s longstanding orange groves, citrusinspired signature treatments include the Citrus Ritual, which begins with a full body exfoliation with water gently cascading from above followed by relaxation in the spa’s garden tub and private patio area, concluding with a customized massage. The Orange Blossom Body Buff offers a full body

exfoliation with the spa’s signature scent of Neroli to soften and renew the skin and is completed with an orange blossom oil application. Offering views of Camelback Mountain and the resort’s mother-of-pearl swimming pool, Royal Palms Resort’s two-story fitness center features state-of-the-art exercise equipment, including a Peloton bike to help guests stay active. For those looking to indulge in fitness and wellness experiences from the comfort of their own room, the resort’s Wellness on Demand program offers an evolving menu of classes like Barre, HIIT and yoga classes. The resort is also conveniently located to nearby running and biking trails. Perfect for sipping and savoring, Royal Palms Resort boasts multiple culinary concepts. T. Cook’s serves as the resort’s signature restaurant, offering the highest quality Mediterranean-inspired cuisine prepared by award-winning Executive Chef Lee Hillson. Commemorating its 25th anniversary this year, T. Cook’s celebrates hand-selected seasonal produce and locally sourced ingredients with notes of regional influence from Northern Italy, Greece, and Spain. Additional food and beverage experiences include Mix Up, an elevated cocktail lounge serving garden-to-glass libations, and Via Cappello, a private dining experience named for a romantic residence in Verona, Italy. This Valentine’s Day, those looking for a romantic getaway can experience the resort’s Royal Romance package and Via Cappello dining experience. The package includes a special welcome amenity, daily breakfast for two, dinner credit to T. Cook’s a rose petal turndown, and late checkout, which can be booked online. The Via Cappello dining experience is customized for couples to savor up to five chefinspired courses from T. Cook’s on a private patio or intimate garden setting complemented by rose petals and candles with special upgrades available. The experience can be booked by emailing Jeffrey Skalski at Jeffrey.Skalski@royalpalmshotel.com. This content is sponsored by Royal Palms Resort and Spa.
