NEWS FROM CITY OF SCOTTSDALE, SCOTTSDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT REPORTING CRIMES ONLINE Did you know you can file some police reports online? With the new ScottsdaleEZ system, filing a police report online is easy and convenient.

Medical emergencies, in-progress crimes and crimes where the suspect is still present will still be reported to 9-1-1.

Crimes that can be reported online include thefts valued under $1,000, all bicycle thefts, shoplifts, criminal damage under $2,000 and lost property under $2,500. If your report qualifies to be reported online, gather all the information you have... the more the better! Be sure to include serial numbers, detailed descriptions, photos, suspect information and any other information you think may be relevant. This easy process will walk you step-by-step through answering the necessary questions to get your report filed.

Once you submit your information, you will receive an email with your report number. Receiving your report number can take up to 72 hours, as reports are only reviewed Monday through Thursday during normal business hours.

To file a report online, go to eservices.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/ crimereport. To report all other crimes that do not fall into one of these categories, please call 480-312-5000.

NEW CAMEREYES PROGRAM The Scottsdale Police Department has announced the CamerEyes registry. Citizens and businesses may voluntarily register their security camera systems in the registry. This is a confidential database that will allow police employees to quickly know where there may be cameras in an area when trying to apprehend a criminal. The police department will not have direct access to the cameras and owners are not obligated to provide video footage. The program is voluntary, and registration only takes a few minutes to complete. Citizens can withdraw from the program at any time. Citizens can register at ScottsdaleAZ.gov/police/securitycamera-registration.

BECOMING A PART OF THE SCOTTSDALE POLICE DEPARTMENT - OVER 50 VARIOUS CIVILIAN POSITIONS When you read “Scottsdale Police Department” just now, you probably visualized men and women in uniform, didn’t you? You’d be surprised how many people don’t think about the hundreds of civilians it takes to support and run a law enforcement agency. Too many people

walk past our job booth just because they’re not interested in being a police officer. “That’s okay,” we say as we pull out our massive binder of positions. “How about any of these?

The City of Scottsdale recently enacted some changes to the city ordinance to address the issues related to this, particularly in parking these devices.

Riders are expected to keep the sidewalks open to pedestrians and to park the bicycles and scooters in racks or in designated parking areas. A maximum of five devices per company are allowed within 200 feet of each other. They should not be parked on private property unless they have permission from the property owner.

If you find a bicycle or electric scooter that is improperly parked, there are several ways to report the issue. The fastest and most effect way to report devices that are parked improperly is through the city’s website at scottsdaleaz.gov/EZ, type “bike” or “scooter” into the search box and follow the prompts to make a report. The application will forward your report to staff or to the private bike- and scooter-sharing companies.

The Scottsdale Police Department will only respond to illegally parked ride-sharing bicycles or electric scooters if they are parked in an extremely hazardous location, such as blocking a roadway.

The ride-share companies are required to remove the illegally parked devices immediately after they are notified.

2019 STUDY RANKS SCOTTSDALE THE BEST CITY FOR JOBS IN U.S. THE CITY OF SCOTTSDALE HAS BEEN NAMED BY WALLETHUB AS THE BEST CITY IN THE U.S. TO FIND A JOB. The 2019 study cites 30 key indicators in ranking cities across the country where job seekers will have the greatest success in securing employment. “Earning a top ranking out of 182 other outstanding communities demonstrates the strong commitment the City of Scottsdale continues to make in growing a diverse and robust business community” says Acting Economic Development Director Rob Millar.

HIGH-END HOME DESIGN IS GOING TO THE DOGS! More than a dozen Valley home builders, engineers, interior designers and architects are hard at work putting together “haute” dog houses for the fifth annual Design for Dogs competition on Feb. 22 at the Facings of America Showroom in Scottsdale.

“Dogs make a house a home, and that’s something we really value at Facings of America,” said Richard van Gilse, owner of the Scottsdale-based showroom. “We love being able to give back and put the spotlight on an organization as wonderful as AAWL.” Phoenix-based Creo Architects has participated in the competition since it began in 2015. Last year’s submission would have been right at home in Hobbiton and the prior years was a dog nook nestled into the modern curves of a coffee table.

These swanky pet palaces will vie for the honor of “Best in Show,” decided by a panel of judges, and “People’s Choice,” selected by event attendees and online voters. ne of the many wonderful things about living in Arizona is that your kids can participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports all year round. There are many great options for getting your kids involved in local sports programs here in the Valley of the Sun. And not only are sports a great way for your kids to have fun, get exercise and stay active, they also teach kids important life lesson like sportsmanship, teamwork and respect.

Whether you want them to participate in team sports or as an individual, here are a few things to keep in mind when you are selecting a sport for your child.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPORT FOR YOUR CHILD Expose your child to a variety of sports activities, but help them choose a sport that is well suited to their age, interests and abilities. Don’t force your child to participate in a sport that doesn’t really interest them or that isn’t a good fit for their skillset – it’s a waste of both time and money, plus it can have a negative affect on your child’s attitude towards sports. Be sure to pick something that fits your budget and your schedule, to reduce your family’s stress level and make it

an enjoyable experience for everyone.

And don’t forget to include the cost of equipment, clothing and gear in your budget when you choose a sport!

Make sure they get to practice on time, stay to watch, attend games, volunteer to help with the team or individual events if you can and always cheer them on. Make sure that both you and your child understand the basic rules

of the sport and be a good role model for your child by not overreacting when the competition doesn’t go your way. Show them that it’s okay to be competitive and disappointed when you don’t win, but that sports are meant to be fun, even if you don’t always beat the opposing team or competitors.

MAINTAIN A BALANCE WITH SCHOOL, SPORTS AND FAMILY It’s important to keep your child from becoming overwhelmed with sports or competition. Participate in activities that work with your schedule and allow you to balance athletics with school, family and non-athletic hobbies. If your child feels stressed out, hates going to practices and games, or just participates to make you happy, it’s probably a good idea to call it quits.

RESOURCES FOR SPORTS IN THE VALLEY How do you find a sport that works well for your kid and their unique interests and skills? There are many resources to help you find sports programs here in Phoenix. THE TOXICITY OUT OF YOUTH SPORTS

F

or many kids, organized sports aren’t much fun anymore.

Overbearing parents, over-the-top coaches and overzealous competition are frequent images associated with youth-athletic leagues today. Though playing ball often used to embody the enjoyment of being a kid, the experience for many youngsters is too serious and stressful – and ultimately not worth it.

One study revealed 70 percent of U.S. children drop out of organized sports by age 13, with pressure and burnout among the main reasons cited.

“The politics, as well as the overemphasis adults put on kids to see a college scholarship as the ultimate goal, is ruining a kid’s ability to get the most out of sports,” says Maya Castro, author of The Bubble: Everything I Learned as a Target of the Political, and Often Corrupt, World of Youth Sports (www. thebubbleweb.com).

“This over-emphasis has created an environment amongst the parents and coaches that is similar to a mafia.

We badly need changes in this toxic, political and corrupt environment. And it must start with the parents.”

ENJOY THE MOMENT Too many parents and their young athletes are fretting the future. “Too often it’s all about winning and getting the scholarship,” Castro says, “but my parents told me there was a time when kids actually enjoyed playing for the sake of playing, and parents won just by getting to watch them play. We need to get back to that. Without it, memories are wasted.”

Castro, who says her own experience as a young soccer player was tainted by misguided and misbehaving adults, offers ideas on how adults can improve the youth-sports culture:

BE ENCOURAGING “Celebrate the effort, not just the result,” Castro says. “This goes for youth coaches as well as parents. When kids do some good things, don’t let the mistakes cloud your post-game comments. Be honest in discussing room for improvement, but not at the expense of making them feel like they have to play perfectly to get praise.”

STRIVE TO BE A MENTOR Castro says parents and coaches have a great opportunity to use sports as a teaching tool for life. “The learning aspect of the game needs to be the focal point of youth sports,” Castro says.

“Sports should be an extension of family values and behaviors. Good parents and coaches tie in the ups and downs of competition with the challenges in navigating adult life.”

MAKE EDUCATION FIRST Castro and many observers of youth sports say parents have lost perspective by thinking their kid is on the fast track to a scholarship or a pro career.

Statistics show few advance that far.

“In the meantime, kids are exhausted from travel leagues and tournaments,” she says, “and the way their future through sports is emphasized, education becomes a distant second.”

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier It’s always surprising to hear how many Phoenicians have never spent time in Tucson. Just a short distance south of the Phoenix metropolitan area is a charming gem of southwestern sights to see.

Tucson is home to the University of Arizona, but ASU fans shouldn’t let that stop them from enjoying the many fascinating places to see in Pima County. The hotels and resorts are plentiful, but our advice is do your research and look at the map to plan your trip. Tucson is much more than what you can see while driving down the highway, and the limited view from I-10 just doesn’t do it justice.

Here are our favorite spots to visit while in Tucson.

ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM It’s a zoo. It’s a botanical garden. It’s a museum. It’s all of the above! The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is located in mountainous desert on the west side of Tucson, but still right down the road from both Old Tucson Studios and Saguaro National Park West. The museum provides visitors with gorgeous views of Sonoran Desert flora and fauna in a botanical garden type of setting. A stroll down the paved and unpaved trails takes you near enclosures that are home to various creatures native to the Sonoran Desert, from hummingbirds and butterflies, to javelinas, hawks, bears and mountain lions.

One of our favorite exhibits is the geological display, located in a mineshaft trail that takes you underground to see the wonders of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert under the surface. This state-of-the-art facility is a must-see if you are in Tucson – and worth planning a trip just to go there on the weekend.

OLD TUCSON STUDIOS Ever wonder where they made your favorite Western? It was probably right here in Old Tucson Studios. Located on the west side of Tucson, just down the road from the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, more than 400 movies have been produced at Old Tucson over the years - and they’re still going strong. With live entertainment, rides, tours and plenty to see, this is a great place to visit when you head to Tucson.

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK – EAST AND WEST Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in Arizona are found in Saguaro National Park West and East. The West part of the National Park is home to a fantastic display of petroglyphs, mountains and Saguaros. The East part of the park provides an entirely different view of the pristine Sonoran Desert, mountain ecosystems and desert wildlife. Everything the Sonoran Desert has to offer is available in two completely different parks, focused on the same purpose – preserving the mighty Sonoran Desert and the Saguaros that give the National Park its name.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK Do you love fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas? Then you’ll love visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park.

It’s opening in 1999 makes it a somewhat recent addition to the Arizona State Park system. Located southeast of Tucson, near Saguaro National Park East, Kartchner Caverns State Park provides facilities for camping, hiking and of course touring the caverns. Be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly!

PIMA AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM If you love aircrafts, space and the

history of flight, then the Pima Air and Space Museum should be on your must-see bucket list. This museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation and space museums in the world, featuring over 350 historical aircrafts from a Wright Flyer to a 787 Dreamliner. The museum, which opened in 1976, is located on 80 acres in the southeast part of Tucson, near Davis–Monthan Air Force Base.

The Pima Air and Space Museum houses six indoor exhibit hangars, three of which are dedicated specifically to World War II. Walking tours and museum ground Tram Tours are offered daily. The museum is also the exclusive operator for bus tours of the “Aircraft Boneyard,” a 2,600-acre U.S. military and government aircraft storage facility also located in Tucson.

If you love aircrafts, be sure to plan a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum. But give yourself plenty of time to explore – the museum is huge and there are hours worth of airplanes and historical displays to see!

rain. Located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains on the northeast edge of Tucson, Sabino Canyon offers visitors a chance to see one of the premier natural areas in southern Arizona. Sabino Creek flows almost year around and the Sabino Canyon tram offers narrated, educational 45-minute tours every day. The tram route begins and ends at the Visitor’s Center, with stops at points along the road to drop off and pick up hikers at the various trailheads. This is a wonderful spot to get a flavor for the beautiful Tucson wilderness.

magine a sign over the door of every classroom. The colorful sign says, Urgently Needed: Young Leaders.

Would your child be prepared to answer this call? Unfortunately, too many of us have fallen into the trap that leaders are the select and chosen few and that followers are the vast majority. Yet, leadership is not an all-or-nothing ability, something you either have or don’t have.

The truth is that all young people have some capacity for leadership.

Leadership skills are instilled, not inherited. One of the best things we can do for young people is help them develop to be leaders.

Leadership training starts at home.

As your child’s first teacher, your

goal should be to set the right example. Do what it takes to excite, motivate, and inspire your child to lead at home, on the playground, and in the hallways at school. Appeal to the young leader’s sense of adventure and make the invisible sign above the classroom door visible.

A leader in every desk is not about dividing students into leaders and non-leaders. Rather it’s about trying to develop the capabilities in each and every student to stand up to the many challenges of leadership. It is about teaching that leadership is a human endeavor, that leadership is about such issues as integrity, character, and helping others.

PREPARE CHILDREN FOR A LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP It’s up to us as parents, teachers, coaches, and youth group advisors to instill these four fundamentals into their lives. Here are a few ways you

can teach and coach your child to become a leader: 1. Build Confidence to Build Competence.

Confidence comes from success. Be alert to opportunities. The only way your children can succeed is through accepting opportunities to lead.

Nudge them outside their comfort zone; empower them to get up and take action. Challenge your child and support them when they struggle.

2. Create an environment where your child can flourish.

Help your children construct a longterm perspective. Help them develop a game plan for turning their vision into reality. Teach them that success and accomplishment are not measured by how they compare to someone else, but how much they improve from where they started.

3. Establish healthy relationships.

Show them how to build positive relationships. Encourage your children to, as best possible, work through their conflicts on their own first.

Teach them how to maturely deal with disagreements. Embolden them to say, “Let’s work together.”

4. Remember that kids will be kids.

Leadership is hard work. All young leaders will constantly ask themselves, “So why should I be a leader?” They need to be taught, nurtured, and guided along their journey. Take the time to understand how your child is progressing as they strive to lead. All kids will engage in inner struggles over selfdoubt, frustration, and uncertainty.

They will be challenged and tested and need you to come alongside and pick them up as they experience setbacks.

As your child begins their leadership journey, remind them that there is no magical path to succeed as a leader.

Rather, it is a way of life.

The Deacons’ studio was one of the first yoga facilities in

BIKRAM HOT YOGA - This is very therapeutic, and it works the mind, body and spirit. This is their hottest class at 105 degrees with 45 percent humidity. The purpose of the heat is to warm your body allowing your muscles to more easily stretch, and the sweat created during hot yoga also helps your body to detoxify. This class is 90 minutes.

RESTORATIVE BASIC YOGA Because this is a basic yoga class, the pace is a bit slower than the Bikram, with plenty of hip opening postures and recovery time. It is excellent for individuals who are working with an injury, new to yoga, pregnant women, or for people who are looking for a more relaxed practice. Also, this class isn’t as hot; it’s only about 99 degrees with a 40 percent humidity.

EXPRESS YOGA CLASS - This is an abbreviated version (60 minutes) of the Bikram Yoga Class, and it’s offered on early mornings and weekends. Perfect for students with moderate yoga experience or for those looking to lose weight and improve cardiovascular conditioning.

POWER YOGA - This class is a mix of Vinyasa flow and Bikram yoga.

Done in a heated room to music, this is a great introduction to intermediate yoga postures.

HOT PILATES - This class is awesome for strengthening all of the body’s core muscles. Considered a more strength based workout, this class works the fine twitch muscles in the body. Fillmore describes this one as Classic Mat Pilates class and is ideal for all levels of ability.

HIIT - This stands for High Intensity Interval Training. The music is up and the energy is high - be prepared to sweat and have fun in our 45 minute Hot HIIT classes! Fillmore says it’s super fun Tabata-style training, which means you exercise for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest, then 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds of rest; you do this for 45 minutes.

HOT BARRE - This is a ballet inspired class that’s a mix of Pilates and Yoga.

MINI KIDS CLUB – We have created a fun, relaxing, and thoughtful space in our front studio room to take care of your children. This is your alternative to finding child care while you get in your workout and relaxation time. Mini Kids Club is for children ages 1-5 and is offered Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. (reservation required).

A typical day at Mini Kids Club includes: Music & Dance with Rhythm Scarves, Circle Time with Books & Songs, Mini Yoga Class & Meditation, and Craft Time.

KIDS YOGA – Offered on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., this class is designed for children ages 5-12. (Parents must be staying to take class during that time as well). This class will start with a meditation, followed by 20-30 minutes of yoga practice, a popcorn snack break, and then mindful crafts & activities.

The Man began to transform right before my eyes. You would have thought I had called his children ugly.

He explained to me, in no uncertain terms, that dollars per square foot was totally without merit and that those who quoted them were equally worthless.

He went on to explain the appraisal method to me right then and there. He showed me how he found three similar nearby sales (comparables or “comps”) and then he compared all four homes side by side, making adjustments up or down for features. It is a truly wonderful method, but it takes a lot of time.

Doing a full appraisal on every property one considers would be tedious, which brings us back to dollars per square foot.

As a tool, dollars per square foot can get you close to a correct property value as long as you remember dollars per square foot is a tool, not a rule. As an example, let us look at the La Paz subdivision right in the heart of 85254.

La Paz homes were built from 1979 to 1985 and range in size from 1,428 square feet to 2,890 square feet. If you look at the last six months of 2018, you will find that 17 homes sold at an average price of $215 per square foot.

So, if you are pricing a home in La Paz do you just multiply the $215 per square foot by the size of the home and out pops a price? Hardly. This average dollars per square foot only tells us a general neighborhood value. A neighborhood in Paradise Valley may aver-

age $400 per square foot and homes in the town of Maricopa average $149 per square foot.

When we look more closely at the 17 homes that sold in La Paz, we see a home that sold for only $170 per square foot and we see a home that sold for $267 per square foot. That’s quite a difference. You see, not all homes are equally cared for or equally updated.

When dollars per square foot is applied as a rule, one is attempting to equalize, and all homes are not equal. Some homes face South and some homes face West. Some homes are on busy streets or corners or cul-de-sacs. Some homes are bigger than others but on the same size lot. That is why large homes average less per square foot while small homes average more.

Dollars per square foot can be a great tool as long as you realize that it is a starting point, or tool that you can use, and if you use it wisely, you can get pretty close to a correct value on a home. Just don’t say that to an appraiser.

n the event of a fire or other damage to your property, would you be able to remember all of the items you lost? Having an up-to-date home inventory can help you get back on your feet faster after a disaster.

• You can also use a handheld camera or the camera on your cell phone to take photos or video to document your possessions.

Building a home inventory can seem like a daunting task, but doesn’t need to.

GETTING STARTED • Make it a goal to create an inventory for one space in your house each week, such as the kitchen or entertainment center, and soon you’ll have a complete list. Document your valuables with general descriptions, cost, and when and where they were purchased. Record serial numbers, if applicable. They are usually found on the back or bottom of major appliances and electronic equipment. Then, move on to the next space you need to document.

• Make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage for big-ticket items, such as jewelry, art and collectibles.

They may have increased in value and may require an endorsement in addition to your standard homeowners or renters insurance policy. Save receipts and appraisal documents with your inventory.

• Don’t forget items that may be tucked away in a garage, attic or storage shed.

USE TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE THE PROCESS EASIER • There are many free apps that can help

KEEP YOUR HOME INVENTORY UP-TO-DATE AND IN A SAFE PLACE • Your home inventory is only useful if it is accurate and accessible when you need it. Make a habit of adding any significant new purchases and receipts to your list.

• If you have a paper inventory, keep a copy somewhere outside of your home, such as in a safe deposit box or with a trusted family member or friend. Make a digital backup of your paper list by taking a picture of it, or scanning and uploading it to a cloud storage service.

• If your list is digital, keep a copy of it on an external drive or cloud storage service. Photos and video you take with your phone may automatically be saved to cloud storage. Check your mobile phone settings to be sure.

• If using an app, make sure the information you enter is backed up and that you know how to access it when you need it.

Once your inventory is created, add up the replacement costs for all of your items, and discuss your situation with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage.

FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH: MIKID

M

IKID’s history stemmed from one individual’s overwhelming concern for the lack of services provided for children in the mental health field and the many serious issues that were not being properly addressed. Sue Gilbertson began her quest in 1984 when her son, Eric, was diagnosed with mental illness. In trying to get assistance for her son, Ms. Gilbertson found herself amidst a conventional medical community that was simply not equipped to handle the problems her son was facing. She was confronted with a community that was indifferent and uncooperative to her needs.

Ms. Gilbertson later came to realize that her struggles were not isolated incidents. She met other families facing similar situations in requesting help for their children who had behavioral health challenges.

Sue took on the responsibility of uniting these families and worked together with them to build a better mental health system for the children of Arizona.

Through the efforts of Ms. Gilbertson, families were first brought together in a support group on March 11, 1987. This led to the formation of MIKID.

Today, MIKID employs 125+ professionally trained staff offering an array of services to families of children with emotional and behavioral challenges. Last year MIKID served families in 76 Arizona cities and towns, reaching 2700 children, youth and families through the various programs and services available.

MIKID provides education, resources, and support to hundreds of Arizona families annually.

MIKID’s mission is to improve the behavioral health and wellness of children and youth through a family-centered approach. This is done through licensed clinical outpatient clinics in Kingman, Phoenix, Casa Grande, Tucson, Nogales, and Yuma, and in the homes and communities of families statewide.

Services can include: respite for the families while children and youth participate in structured activities in the community; living skills training to build life and positive coping skills for children and youth; transition-age youth services that prepare youth ages 13-25 for adulthood; Family Support services for parents and caregivers to aid them in navigating the mental health, child welfare, special education, and/ or juvenile justice systems; Peer Support and leadership groups for teens; Parent Support Now (PSN) which supports families that have children in the custody of the Department of Child Safety (DCS); and Prevention training for schools and community groups utilizing evidence-based curriculum, including Signs of Suicide (SOS), Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), and safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone).

MIKID’s direct services are available for free to families that have, or are eligible for, AHCCCS/ Medicaid. With grant funding and donations, MIKID is able to serve families that do not qualify for AHCCCS. Grants and donations also allow MIKID to provide the Prevention training free to schools and community groups across the state.

With community support, MIKID will be able to continue to offer these services for free to families

that are in need of support for their children struggling with mental illness and behavioral health challenges, and to communities that want to be educated in ways to prevent suicide and support children and youth with mental health needs.

I

t is recommended to clean diamond and most gem jewelry at least once a week with a soap solution or equivalent. Windex spray/ammonia/ dish soap can be used, however check certain gems i.e. soft stones such as turquoise, for potential reaction.

Making a ritual/habit of cleaning in such manner can keep the jewelry brighter and sparkling.

Once every three months jewelry should be professionally cleaned by a jeweler; ultrasonic and steam, preferably one you can witness (i.e. done where you can observe if you want to). This is typically in the fine print of your warranty and finance contract. Many people buy and pay extra for a warranty without realizing that the warranty legally becomes null and void if not followed through.

Check your warranty contract for care and cleaning to understand and avoid heartaches later.

Ring Sizing: Each individuals fingers are different. Depending on health situations, some individuals could have knuckle considerations due to various medical conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, breaks, etc. Cold and heat can shrink or swell fingers, as well as some heavy work. This is a normal physical reaction. Women are more prone to swelling. It is recommended to have your rings sized so that it is somewhat snug to fit over knuckle. In cases of arthritic knuckles where variation from knuckle to digit varies, there are different solutions that can be applied depending on individual conditions (financial as well as medical conditions).

Ring Guards: These are metallic and attached to both sides of the shank with proper width to match the ring shank. This is the lowest cost solution since it is metallic and not made of gold. Also, one can move it up or down with a flat, small object so that the ring guard is snug against the finger.

Sizing Dots: These are normally applied to two sides of the shank after the ring has been sized properly to avoid the “sliding” of the ring. When the proper size of gold dots are applied (as shown in attached photo), rings can stay put as desired most of the time.

Adjustable Shank: For more severe arthritic cases, this might be the solution. As shown in attached diagram, the shank of the ring is cut off and replaced with this adjustable shank that normally allows two to three ring size variation between the knuckle and the finger below.

VICE

The story of Dick Cheney and his rise through politics, leading to his run as Vice President under George W. Bush.

Writer and director Adam McKay’s anger seethes throughout this movie, and the fury affects the style, editing and tone here. It goes back and forth between comedy and horror in how they show the things that Cheney and co. were able to get away with, and it’s a rare case where conflicting tones work. It’s insane just how meta the film is, continuously breaking the fourth wall with a narrating Jesse Plemons (who has his own story in the film), several interesting editing choices, and a false ending. Christian Bale perfectly recreates Cheney in voice, actions and personality, and is joined by a fantastic cast (especially Amy Adams). The documentary style (with wonderful shots

by Greig Fraser) adds to the realism and cements the uncomfortable feeling you are left with.

THE MULE

A ninety-year-old man takes up a driving job after falling into financial strain, only to discover its connections to a major drug cartel.

For someone who’s been directing for nearly 50 years, there’s a very amateur feel to Clint Eastwood’s new film. Maybe it’s due to his tendency to shoot very few takes, but none of the actors ever seem really ‘into’ the film, aside from Eastwood himself (who happens to play the main character). The situation at hand never resonates because the characters don’t seem to really care, so why should we? The film also seems to have an iden-

tity crisis when it comes to tone, because sometimes it really wants you to take the story seriously while also treating many moments as a comedy. Speaking of which, the humor is filled with outdated “kids these days…” and “the internet is terrible” jokes, along with some out of nowhere racist humor. Aside from that, it’s boringly shot and edited, making for an overall bland film. It’s bizarre that a film with this much talent can turn out the way it did.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

A young woman and her family must do anything possible to save her lover from prison time after being accused of a horrific crime.

Barry Jenkins’ follow up to Moonlight is the kind of film that you can tell someone put more than their all into it. The film goes deep into the lives of Tish and Fonny (played expertly by KiKi Layne and Stephan James), showing their full uncensored lives, warts and all. But the genius of Jenkins is how he presents it - simple, normal and not overly staged.

A different filmmaker would try to make some scenes feel more fast-paced and hectic, but here, they are intimate and lovely.
