Solar Panel Prices Rising Sharply in 2nd Quarter. Act NOW to Lock in Current Pricing!
By Erick O’Donnell
I
n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work. Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer. Technological innovation and scaledup production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow. And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according
to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year. Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. Depending on how soon your system is installed, you could even secure your 26 percent federal tax credit in time to use it early next year. A solar system offers even more financial benefits to your household. As a long-term money-saving asset, a PV array is likely to increase the value of your home, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Our projections show that the average solar customer can expect to save an estimated $50,000 to $100,000 over a 25-year period. Our customer testimonials show that Sunsolar Solutions is focused on maximizing savings by harnessing the greatest amount of solar energy possible (and, along with it, the greatest tax savings possible). Another major advantage to going solar early in 2022 is that the system will have time to generate the credits needed to knock down next summer’s electricity costs. In the winter and spring months, solar systems in the Valley create a big surplus of power, which is turned into cash credits on the homeowner’s utility account. Those credits are used in the summer months to offset hot-weather usage. If you choose to start your project soon, the system will be installed in time to produce those essential credits. Even in an era of economic volatility, time can be on your side—that is, if you’re willing to act and leave unnecessary risks behind. Sunsolar Solutions is ready to provide the tools you need to take your energy future into your hands. Scottsdale’s New General Plan: What Happens Now? By Kelly Corsette, Communications & Public Affairs Director for the City of Scottsdale SCOTTSDALE VOTERS RECENTLY APPROVED AN UPDATE TO THE CITY’S GENERAL PLAN. The updated plan - General Plan 2035 - replaces the 2001 Scottsdale General Plan that was approved by the voters in 2002. Scottsdale General Plan 2035 serves as the community’s new vision and guide for future physical, economic, and social development. “Many thanks to everyone who helped craft our vision to enhance our quality of life and support the economic vitality of Scottsdale,” says Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega. “Our approved General Plan 2035 will serve as our guide for the next ten years.”
Many priority efforts underway in the City of Scottsdale will be shaped by the vision, guidance, and goals set forth in the voter-approved General Plan, including: TRANSPORTATION Scottsdale is creating the Transportation Action Plan 2021—a roadmap for the community’s transportation future to improve how we get around (whether by foot, bus, bike, vehicle, motorcycle, scooter, horse, or something yet to emerge) over the next 10 years. This effort is guided by the General Plan’s Circulation and Bicycling elements (pp. 151-164).
The General Plan’s goals and policies are implemented by both the public and private sectors through actions like developing facilities and infrastructure, and creating specific policies and plans to guide future efforts.
SUSTAINABILITY The city is developing its first Sustainability Plan to further the community’s efforts to protect valuable resources for future generations. This work will be guided by multiple sections of General Plan 2035, including the Open Space, Environmental Planning, Conservation, Water Resources and Energy elements (pp. 73-107), and the Healthy Community (pp. 119-127) and Economic Vitality (pp. 205-209) elements.
The plan contains 24 elements—sections that address topic areas or aspects of the community. These include Character and Design, Land Use, Environmental Planning, Housing, Recreation, Public Services and Facilities, Safety, and Economic Vitality. Review or download Scottsdale General Plan 2035 at ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “general plan.”
HEAT MITIGATION As part of efforts to better understand and address issues related to high temperatures and identify cooler city strategies, Scottsdale is developing a Heat Mitigation Plan, guided by the Character and Design (pp. 29-42), Environmental Planning (pp. 85-92), and Conservation (pp. 93-98) elements.
DROUGHT MANAGEMENT With water level in Lake Mead continuing to decline, Scottsdale implemented Stage 1 of its Drought Management Plan in August. The city is also updating that plan to ensure it is as effective as possible, an effort guided by the General Plan’s Conservation and Water Resources elements (pp. 93-102) and Safety Element (pp. 141147). TOURISM The Tourism and Events department is updating Scottsdale’s five-year Tourism Strategic Plan, which sets forth goals and actions to strengthen this vital piece of the community’s identity and economy—work guided by the Economic Vitality and Tourism elements (pp. 211-215). HOUSING The City Council is discussing potential solutions to the city’s growing housing affordability issues, and these will be guided by the General Plan’s Land Use (pp. 43-61), Healthy Community (pp. 119-127), Housing (pp. 129132) and Conservation, Rehabilitation and Redevelopment (pp. 175-179) elements. As this work continues across the city, the City Council will align budget objectives and performance measures with the new plan, as well as prioritize the Implementation Element with efforts that the Mayor and City Council want to focus on in the next 12-24 months.

To attend, register at hollandcenter.org. Each event is $10. Topics include: January 11, American Pride: Often known as the most prideful nation on earth, the U.S. is a true human melting pot. So much social complexity makes the U.S. the most racially and religiously integrated nation in modern times. This lecture will examine some of its most prideful features and discuss what drives the American ethos.
February 8, The History of Journalism in America: Journalism in 2022 has become enormously complex with numerous channels of communication, enormous competition, all bombarded onto an increasingly less learned populous. How did American journalism get where it is and where is it going? March 8, Wall Street: Investors established the first corporations to shield themselves from liabilities incurred by companies. This lecture will examine the broad concepts of investing, including the risks and rewards, from both the perspective of a casual investor and that of a trader “on the floor.” April 12, The History of Arizona: Like much of the rest of the West, Arizona’s history prior to statehood in 1912 featured mining, water, farming and a few high-risk ventures. But many of the people who built the last of the 48 contiguous U.S. states were quite

interesting and make for a very good story. May 10, Banking in America: In the early 1800s, credit was necessary to drive the industrial revolution, but there were few banking institutions. Today, America’s total banking assets exceed $24 trillion. How did we get where America is today and how does banking really work? Sherbert has a passion for history and the broad scope of events and people who make America unique among nations. The successful chief executive and business advisor’s career includes consumer and commercial manufacturing in the international market. Currently, Sherbert serves as the development leader of the Desert Foothills Leadership Academy and former board chair of The Holland Center. A professional illustrator and artist for nearly 30 years, Moore is the exclusive artist for The Mandalorian Collection for Thomas Kinkade Studios. He watches each episode multiple times. He views it to enjoy the show the first time and take notes, a second time to watch for the most iconic scenes or images from the episode, and again while he’s painting. Moore creates a 22-inch by 31-inch size painting for each episode of The Mandalorian. He’s currently painting his way through Season 2. Valley residents can see Moore’s work in person and purchase prints of his Mandalorian paintings at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO Friday, January 14 through Sunday, March 27 under the “festive white tents” at 26540 N. Scottsdale Road, on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax Roads, next to MacDonald’s Ranch. The Arizona Fine Art EXPO, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, features 124 patron-friendly artist studios in a 44,000 square-foot space. The event gives guests the rare chance to meet artists like Moore, see them in action, and learn about their journey, inspiration, and techniques. MONTE MOORE Born in Phoenix, Moore grew up on a 30,000-acre cattle ranch in Idaho. He spent summers working with his dad
on the ranch and acquired his love of art from his mom, who is a fine artist herself. His interests and artwork are wide ranging, from the highly realistic westerns he’s best known for by Arizona Fine Art EXPO patrons to pop culture paintings, graphic novels, custom automotive work, and sculpture. “Monte is one of the most wide-ranging and prolific artists at the Arizona Fine Art EXPO,” says Judi Combs, co-founder of the Arizona Fine Art EXPO. “He is a favorite of our patrons. You can’t help but fall in love with his stunning, lifelike work.” “A lot of artists paint a specific subject in a specific style,” says Moore. “But I would get bored. I’ve done everything from scratchboard to digital. I’m not satisfied with one look, style or subject.” ARIZONA FINE ART EXPO Throughout the 10-week event, patrons can enjoy watching artists sketch in pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; chisel, carve and shape stone; scratch and etch on porcelain and clay board; and saw and carve wood sculptures. Artists will also paint in all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; design and create jewelry; and assemble mosaics. Season passes to the event cost $12; season passes for seniors and military are $10; and children under 12 are free. Parking is free. Scottsdale Whistleblower Shares Importance of Health Care Advocacy for Veterans in New Book U.S. NAVY VETERAN AND SCOTTSDALE RESIDENT PAULA PEDENE BELIEVES ALL VETERANS DESERVE THE BEST HEALTH CARE AMERICA CAN OFFER. A fierce advocate for veterans, she took a huge risk on her 20-year public relations career to become a nationally known VA (veterans affairs) whistleblower.

go where you want to go...
Locally, Pedene was amongst the first to discover harmful health care policies at the Phoenix VA Hospital that were put in place by powerful leaders who intentionally delayed veterans’ care. To stop her from speaking the truth, those same leaders took away her job, influence, and voice by banishing her to the basement library and placing her under an illegal gag order, according to Pedene. Now, as a VA retiree, Pedene is using her experience as a Navy broadcast journalist, with service during the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm, and her public relations expertise, to keep pressure on congressional leaders to honor their commitments to veterans.

Her personal life drama unfolds in her new book, “A Sacred Duty,” which highlights a cascading series of heartbreaking emotions as she battles with a leadership team who are creating policies that will financially enrich their lives while putting veterans’ lives in danger. Ultimately, doctors, staff, and an investigative reporter worked behind the scenes with Paula’s silent encouragement to uncover the breadth of the astounding secret—a double set of appointment books created to mislead VA investigators about the delays in veterans’ care. “I took a leap of faith to save veterans but suffered emotionally and financially as I fought to protect myself and my family from the superpowers in Washington, D.C.,” Pedene says. “In the end, those unethical VA leaders ultimately faced harsh realities as some lost jobs, new laws were passed, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs was forced to resign.” Pedene won her whistleblower case and accepted a

She retired in 2020 after earning two additional top honors for her efforts. Her book, “A Sacred Duty,” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Target, and other bookstores.

City News Chihuly in the Desert Marks a Historic Partnership Between Iconic Artist and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West A NEW EXHIBITION OF MONUMENTAL WORKS BY DALE CHIHULY IS NOW ON VIEW AT ONE OF ARIZONA’S MOST ICONIC LANDMARKS AND THE STATE’S ONLY CULTURAL UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S FAMED HOME AND STUDIO, TALIESIN WEST, IN SCOTTSDALE. A historic partnership between the revered artist and renowned architect, Chihuly in the Desert combines American art, architecture, and the remarkable landscape of the Sonoran Desert to majestic effect. Chihuly in the Desert showcases six art installations at Taliesin West placed inside the building, on the lawns, in the water, and emerging from the desert itself. Each installation is a rich dialogue between Wright and Chihuly, pairing the work of the two masters in a way that has never been done before. Taliesin West is the great architect’s winter home and desert laboratory, an ideal backdrop for exploring the elements and principles of design, present in both Chihuly’s sculptures and Wright’s architecture. Dale Chihuly is known for revolutionizing glass with immersive, large-scale installations around the world. The interplay of Chihuly’s work with architecture has been core to his practice since studying interior design at University of Washington in the 1960s. This approach is a fascinating aspect of the artist’s work, with notable installations placed across cities, such as Venice during Chihuly Over Venice, in historic sites like the ancient Citadel in the Old City of Jerusalem for Chihuly in the

Light of Jerusalem 2000, and in response to architectural environments such as the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California. “It is a pleasure to return to the Sonoran Desert with a new exhibition. Developing and placing work in the distinct environments of Taliesin West and Desert Botanical Garden has been a unique opportunity for me and I hope everyone who visits will find something beautiful and unexpected in the experience,” says Dale Chihuly. Over seven decades, Wright explored, invented and redefined American architecture through innovative projects and experimental approaches. His aim was to design structures that truly connected with their surroundings and focused on synergy between the built and natural environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. Similarly, over the course of five decades, Chihuly has explored new and old glassmaking techniques, pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. He draws inspiration from the world around him, creating statements using color and form to capture the imagination and catapult beyond the conventional ideas of function and beauty. “Chihuly and Frank Lloyd Wright, two American originals taking inspiration from the country’s unique physical and cultural landscapes, are a perfect fit at Taliesin West,” says Stuart Graff, president and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “With our World Heritage buildings and mountainous desert backdrop,
the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation presents its first exhibition of this kind, revealing how art, architecture and nature come together to connect our visitors more deeply with the world around them. Guests have the rare opportunity to experience a visual conversation between Wright and Chihuly and to see them both in an entirely new way.” Now through June 19, Taliesin West will offer In The New Light: Wright & Chihuly ($49 per person with discounts for students, youth and members), a 90-minute guided tour where guests explore Wright’s desert home and laboratory and the six Chihuly artworks throughout the campus. Also available is Sunsets and Sips ($35), a new happy hour where guests are invited to linger with a drink at the Studio and under the Pergola. All tickets come with a complimentary drink (beer, wine or soda) and access to select spaces on property with staff present to answer questions. Beginning this month, Taliesin West will introduce Chihuly Nights ($35 per person with discounts for students, youth and members offered Friday – Sunday from 6:30 to 9 p.m.), a self-guided, 60-minute outdoor tour of five Chihuly artworks where guests explore the grounds of Taliesin West’s historic core at night and see the Chihuly artworks illuminated. Chihuly in the Desert is co-presented by Taliesin West and the Desert Botanical Garden with both venues featuring the artist’s extraordinary works. Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Dan Shufelt. I’VE LIVED IN SCOTTSDALE FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… It has all the amenities for daily life, great schools, and easy access to hiking trails, the airport, and downtown activities. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… My life changed last year when I stepped down from my role as CEO of Arizona Helping Hands and shifted my focus to other roles. A typical day now includes managing assets for an Arizona trust and interacting with many of the charity leaders who I’ve developed relationships with over the years. I keep active by hiking, running/walking, intermittently playing golf, and writing a blog about the importance of being involved in charitable activities (givingbackmovingforward.com). I clear my mind by sweating it out on my mat at hot yoga classes at Just Be Yoga. MY FAMILY IS… Cheryl, my wife of 43 years, and our two grown daughters and four grandchildren. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS... Physical activity. Getting outdoors in the Arizona sunshine, regardless of the temperature, keeps my motor running. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A math teacher. In college I had the worst teacher for two semesters of calculus who turned me off on math as an option. I shifted my major to accounting. It was a great decision as an accounting degree opened doors for me, working my way up through CPA firms and 14 • January 2022 • THE SCOTTSDALE STANDARD
establishing a solid, successful business career. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… Sweet Caroline. I’ve always been a Neil Diamond fan. THE PEOPLE WHO MOTIVATE ME THE MOST ARE… Nonprofit leaders. Having been in that role myself, I understand fully how hard it is to live a mission 24/7 and devote so much energy to a cause you believe in. People like Denise Resnik (SAARC and First Place Phoenix) and Barb Blalock (Treasures 4 Teachers) who have founded game-changing charitable organizations are such inspirational motivators. THE PERFECT DAY… As an early riser, I love to start the day with a cup of coffee and the newspaper, then working out, and end it relaxing with a crossword puzzle or a good television show to wind down. Outdoor time, hiking with my wife, playing basketball or tennis with my grandson, and walking around the block with our three grandkids from Munds Park are all moments to be treasured. MY FAVORITE LOCAL NONPROFIT IS… This is a
question I can’t answer. There are so many great organizations that my blog will have content for years. I’ve written about many of the charities I love, including Harvest Compassion Centers, Jacob’s Hope, NourishPHX, and more. I wish that everyone would take the time to learn about charitable causes and investigate how you can get involved and give back. THE MOST MEMORABLE GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… A 12-string Gibson guitar my parents gave me for my high school graduation. MY DREAM VACATION… Would be to return to Alaska. My wife and I took an “Uncruise Adventure” years ago and had an opportunity to kayak in Glacier National Park, get close to whales, and experience navigating the water much more intimately than on a big cruise ship. THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS… From my former boss, now my friend, business partner and mentor, Len Miller. Len made the statement that every businessperson has an obligation to get involved and give back to the community. I have learned, and now preach, the importance of utilizing the gifts we’re given of time, talent, and treasure to help others. myhyperlocalnews.com

To Sell or Not to Sell in 2022? By Joseph Callaway
C
ongratulations, your 2,000 square foot 85254 home went up in value by about 70% in 2021 alone. To put all this in perspective without the percentage mumbo jumbo – Your average 2,000
square feet home in the magic 85254 zip code was worth $462,360 four years ago at the beginning of 2018. It went up to $494,160 in January 2019 and it jumped to $569,600 only a year ago. Today your modest Scottsdale mailing address home would sell for a whopping $785,700. So, when do you cash in? Bear in mind that, unless you rent for a while you are suddenly a buyer at these new higher prices. Does it make sense to sell? Well, it certainly doesn’t make sense to let the higher prices keep you from buying. After all, you just got a lot from the sale of your home. If you are downsizing or moving to another state, you will probably be money ahead and if you are moving up now is better than later as prices will probably continue to rise.
you, check with your accountant to be sure about what you are doing. Bottom line: all the old platitudes still apply. Take care of your home and eventually it will take care of you. In the meantime, there is nothing better than home ownership. Those monthly mortgage payments are just like a savings account and, in time, you will have more money than you would ever expect to save up. Plus, you get to make it your own, pick your own paint colors, and dream the American dream. Joseph Callaway is co-owner of Those Callaways Team, an independent brokerage operating in 85254 for 25 years. For additional information, visit ThoseCallaways.com or call 480-596-5751.
One thing to think about is capital gains tax on your sale. The first $250,000 in gains ($500,000 for a married couple) is excluded from taxation. This makes it a good idea to move every few years as this exclusion applies repeatedly with each house you sell. If this appeals to
Scottsdale Continues Work to Address Short-term Rental Concerns By Brent Stockwell, Assistant City Manager of Scottsdale
T
he Scottsdale City Council recently voted unanimously in favor of two proposed updates to the city’s Vacation Rental ordinance and Nuisance Parties and Unlawful Gatherings. The updates to both ordinances, which takes effect January 7, will remove loopholes, increase fines, and improve the city’s enforcement abilities when handling short-term vacation rental complaints. A 2016 state law restricting cities and towns from regulating vacation and short-term rental properties removed a Scottsdale law that prohibited rentals of 30 days or fewer. Since that legislation took effect, residents have repeatedly asked the city to help mitigate the negative effects of these rental properties – now estimated to number more than 4,000 in Scottsdale. In 2020, the city formed a Short-Term Rental Working Group to further explore these issues and offer potential solutions, primarily focused on

improving monitoring and enforcement of rules that are allowed under state law. The working group made nine recommendations that the City Council adopted last summer. Among the recommendations were changes to state law that would strengthen local authority over shortterm rentals. These changes are outlined in a letter to state legislators from the Scottsdale Mayor and City Council. Besides amending state law and strengthening city ordinances, other working group recommendations that are moving forward include increasing enforcement, improving communication, and providing educational opportunities to both residents and short-term rental owners and hosts. SCOTTSDALE’S EFFORTS TO ALLEVIATE SHORT-TERM VACATION RENTAL COMPLAINTS BEGAN IN 2019 In fall 2019, the Scottsdale City Council amended an existing city code requiring owners of short-term or vacation rentals to provide emergency and complaint
contact information. The amendment also emphasizes that these rentals may not be used for non-residential purposes such as restaurants or event centers. Additionally, the City Council adopted a citywide Nuisance Parties and Unlawful Gatherings ordinance that makes it easier to hold property owners accountable for repeated unruly gatherings or parties. This ordinance applies to all private residences whether they are long- or short-term rentals, or owner occupied. While the two ordinances brought some relief, the working group recommended that these city ordinances be strengthened to better protect neighborhoods. PROPERTY OWNERS ARE REQUIRED TO REGISTER WITH THE STATE, COUNTY AND CITY Every vacation or short-term rental property in the state is required to have a Transaction Privilege Sales Tax license from the State of Arizona Department of Revenue. Additionally, all rental units in Scottsdale are required to register those units with the Maricopa County
Assessor per Arizona Revised Statute 33-1902. Owners of vacation and short-term rentals in Scottsdale are also required to provide the city with complaint/ emergency contact information for each property, in accordance with Scottsdale City Code Section 18-150. Additionally, any person designated as a vacation or short-term rental’s emergency contact must respond inperson to the property within one hour of the city’s notification in the event of an emergency. RESOURCES AND INFORMATION Scottsdale’s vacation and short-term rentals page provides resources and information for neighborhoods and property owners to help everyone understand the rules, comply with registration requirements, and get help when needed. Scottsdale also developed a useful online course as part of its Neighborhood College series for residents to understand how to address short-term rentals in their neighborhoods. Both can be accessed at ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

t’s a new year and many of us are looking for ways to lead healthier, happier lives in 2022 and beyond. Luckily, FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center, a full-service physical therapy practice, is here for locals in need of expert help kickstarting their health and wellness journey. “FYZICAL is well known for our quality one-on-one care we provide with a concierge feel to our private practice physical therapy group,” says Sandi Salazar, MSPT, Nike GPS, CAFS, physical therapist and owner of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center’s Phoenix location. “FYZICAL doesn’t just treat balance and vestibular disorders, although we are proud to be the Valley experts for these complex disorders. We are a full-service physical therapy practice treating everything from ankle sprains, sports injuries, back and neck pain, to the more complex vestibular disorders.” MAKING THE MOVE TO HIGH STREET As of early February (they estimate their official opening date will be February 1), FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center is moving to High Street. The new office will be located at 5415 E. High Street, Suite 107, in Phoenix. FYZICAL is still seeing patients though at their current location, 20950 N. Tatum Boulevard, Suite 390, in Phoenix, up until the move. “We couldn’t be more excited about the move,” Salazar shares. “We may be new to City North but have been serving the Desert Ridge and Scottsdale communities for the past five years at the Desert Ridge Medical Campus and rapidly growing by reputation and word of mouth since. Prior to joining FYZICAL, our niche private practice had been providing care for the community since 2006 with a dedication to the highest quality of care, where you don’t just feel like a number.”
therapy franchise and number 66 on ‘Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list.’” Whether it’s balance issues or another issue that a new client comes into FYZICAL for, Salazar wants locals to know that physical therapy doesn’t have to hurt— especially because of her practice’s unique approach to structural body work. FYZICAL also takes most insurances and private pay, and is adhering to the highest of COVID-19 safety standards. For all her new and current clients—and the community at large—Salazar and her team want everyone to be aware of their own balance issues and needs. FYZICAL not only treats balance issues, but several other health concerns as well, including: cervicogenic dizziness, neurological rehabilitation, myofascial release manual treatment, concussion management, sciatica, neck/ back pain and disorders, orthopedic and sports related injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, frozen shoulder, and plantar fasciitis, to name a few. “Among our various treatment interventions, we also utilize a unique, but highly effective form of myofascial release for structural body work, postural correction and pain relief,” Salazar adds. “This form of myofascial release is amazing for treatment of a variety of issues, from neck and back pain to heel pain. The best part about this approach is that it is virtually pain free, and you won’t leave feeling bruised.”
NOT IN PAIN? FYZICAL CAN HELP YOU IMPROVE YOUR SWING! Because of its outdoor location and the ability for players to physically distance themselves from one another, the already popular game of golf has experienced an upswing during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, a University of Arizona study found that golf contributes $3.9 NEW LOCATION, SAME QUALITY SERVICES billion to the state’s economy. With near perfect weather, Salazar says that she and her team joined the FYZICAL it’s the ideal time to hit the green. If you’re a golfer and franchise family in 2015. motion or a hidden balance issue could be sabotaging your game. Having a golf performance assessment could uncover any issues and help you take your game to the next level.” “Golfers tend to be a very motivated crew when it comes to doing whatever it takes to improve their game and keep them on the course,” she continues. “So, what if I told you a balance deficit you were not even aware of was killing your game? This hidden demon could be the missing link to the game of your dreams.” Let’s face it, most of us are not even aware that we have an issue with our balance or balance has the stigma of being an issue for “old people.” The reality, however, is that most of us are walking around with a deficit in our balance system. An underlying balance deficit is often the trigger for many joint aches and pains because the body is having to work harder to compensate for that deficit, Salazar explains. The body naturally compensates for that balance deficit by limiting or slowing down our motion, allowing it to feel more stable. Over time, we start to notice this motion loss most pronounced in our thoracic spine (mid-back) and hips, which are vital to the golf swing. “Improving balance will allow for faster trunk and hip rotation, which directly translate to greater power behind the swing and greater distance to the drive,” Salazar says. “Improving balance can also lead to longevity on the golf course and endurance during and after a round of golf.” LOVE YOUR LIFE WITH THE HELP OF FYZICAL “FYZICAL draws people from all over the Valley for the unique services we provide, with some coming from as far away as Maricopa. Whatever your need, FYZICAL is here to help get you back to loving your life,” Salazar says. “Let’s face it, life is more fun when you are able to do what you love, do it well, and do it without issue. Connect with us today and see how FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers can help you love your life.” Salazar adds that any new patient who mentions this story will receive a free golf performance assessment, a free balance assessment, or half off on a myofascial release treatment. Achievable New Year’s Resolutions for Families By Nadine Bubeck Photo by J. Anthony Martinez Photography
I
’m not the biggest fan of New Year’s resolutions as they often leave me feeling defeated. However, I do believe there’s value in setting high hopes for a fresh year. As we begin 2022, here are eight doable goals for families who seek making home life more harmonious. START A SPECIAL WEEKLY OR MONTHLY RITUAL My kids love board games and I often find myself putting off playing due to being distracted with work, cleaning, cooking, and more. However, starting a dedicated and consistent ritual would hold our entire family accountable for partaking in fun-filled activities. If weekly is too much pressure, determine a monthly family game night, movie night, craft night, or other type of night that fits your family best. Let each child offer their choice of activity and take turns implementing. PRIORITIZE EATING DINNER TOGETHER I know eating dinner as a family every night is often unattainable. With that being said, when families dine together, it helps them handle the stresses of daily life. It’s a nice time to debrief the day and talk things through as a unit. To get your kids chatting, play Two Highs, One Low—ask them to name two amazing things that happened that day and express one thing they found challenging.
PLAY HOOKY We get sick days, right? Why not take a “well day” and do something fun occasionally? When I was young, my mom would let me play hooky every so often—we’d do something sporadic, and it meant the world to me. Life moves fast and even kids need time to reboot, and sometimes a simple day off and quality time does the trick. TAKE THE TRIP Instill in your kids to value making memories over monetary things. The pandemic has reminded our family to take advantage of time and live life to the fullest, and so we’ve taken every opportunity to travel. People don’t take trips; trips take people and exposing your kids to exploration and adventure will only shape them into more cultured, wellrounded individuals. PAY IT FORWARD Make a list of various ways your family wants to help others this year, then determine a plan to make them happen. One idea is to ask your kids to choose some toys they’ve outgrown to donate to a shelter— it’s simple, but the lessons learned are so important. GET ACTIVE Exercise is the most cliché New Year’s resolution, so give it a fresh family-infused approach. For older kids, decide to train for a 5K together or do regular hikes in your area. Bike ride to lunch on the week-

ends or simply play catch with your kids in the yard. Lay a strong foundation of making exercise fun. UNPLUG Decide to digitally detach during specific times, such as for dinner or certain times during the evening. Put the phone down and focus on being 100% present for yourself and your family. It’s amazing how rewarding it is to have a conversation with actual eye contact! In other words, connect by disconnecting. HONOR YOUR CHILD’S INDIVIDUALITY I have three young boys and they’re all very different. While one is creative and crafty, the other is all about sports, and my toddler just loves to play. Make sure to get time with each of your kids individually, honoring their interests even if they’re not necessarily yours. Spending that special quality time will only strengthen your bond and help boost your child’s self-esteem. Nadine Bubeck is a former news anchor turned all things mama. What To Consider When Choosing a Trustee for Your Revocable Trust By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks
W
ith the new year ahead of us, one of the things you might want to consider is putting in place an estate plan or updating the one you have. A great way to plan is with the Revocable Living Trust. When you establish your Trust, one of the most important decisions to make is who will be your successor Trustee.
MAKING SURE YOUR TRUSTEE UNDERSTANDS THE JOB When selecting your Successor Trustee, it’s important that they understand what they will be called upon to do. Also, be sure you have asked them if they are willing to serve. This is very important! You don’t want a situation where the people you counted on to serve are saying they won’t. UNDERSTANDING THE VARIOUS ROLES OF YOUR TRUSTEE Serving as Trustee During Your Incapacity There are several times a Successor Trustee may be called to serve, including if you become incapacitated. Make sure your Successor Trustee realizes that they may begin to serve while you are still alive but unable to manage your own finances. They should know they may be managing your finances to take care of you and anyone dependent upon you. The job of Trustee during incapacity could be a short stint or a long haul. Be sure your Trustee is up for the task either way.
Serving as Trustee to Administer Your Trust After Death Your Successor Trustee will also wrap up your financial affairs at your death. This could be a simple job, or very complicated, depending on what you own. While you don’t have to disclose all your finances to your Successor Trustee, be sure they understand the extent of what they may have to address when they begin to serve at your death. If it’s on the complicated side, talk about what they may be signing up to do. Will they be selling a house here and in another state? Do you own a business or rental properties? Do you have many different accounts and brokerage accounts or Bitcoin? Serving as Trustee for Your Beneficiaries Your Successor Trustee may also be managing a trust created on your death for one or more beneficiaries, including minors who cannot handle their own money. Talk to your Trustee about what you wish for your beneficiaries and how you want distributions handled. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR FREE CONSULTATION Selecting a trustee and talking with them about your plan is important. If you need an estate plan or want a review of your current plan, I’m happy to help. We are happy to meet via Zoom, FaceTime, or phone for our free initial consultation. Give my office a call at 602-375-6752 or inquire through our website at libbybanks. com/schedule-estate-planning-meeting.

The Latest Medical Advice for Influenza, And How It Differs From COVID-19 By Manisha Shah, D.O.
M
ost people dread getting sick. The winter season, notoriously known for viruses such as influenza, causes various ailments. The severity increases among extremes of ages, pregnant women, and persons of all ages with chronic medical conditions. If an individual does contract influenza, early detection and treatment can decrease the duration of infection. Ultimately, the best approach to remaining illness-free occurs with vaccination. Traditionally, influenza viruses (most commonly influenza A and influenza B) transmit through large-particle respiratory droplets from one person to another. Inconspicuous transmission occurs when a person coughs or sneezes. Thus, public spaces serve as a breeding ground for viral contamination. Preventative measures are vital to avoid communal spread. Individuals with an infection display symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and body aches. Young children may present with nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Influenza and COVID-19 infections cause similar symptoms, however, COVID-19 infections continue throughout the year. Viral testing differentiates the two. Early detection with testing allows for maximum treatment benefits and quicker resolution of symptoms. Health care providers usually diagnose the flu using a nasal swab in combination with a throat swab. Depending on the test, results are available within minutes to several hours. Symptomatic patients should test as close to the onset of infection to maximize detection of the virus. Symptoms resolve within three to seven days (for a course without complications), although cough and fatigue may persist for more than two weeks.
myhyperlocalnews.com
The CDC recommends the influenza vaccine, known as the flu shot, for all people age six months and older. The influenza vaccine provides the most effective prevention against illness and its complications. The level of protection the vaccination provides depends on age and health of the recipient, the type of vaccine, the type of circulating influenza viruses in the community, and the similarity between circulating viruses and those in the vaccine. Eligible children under eight years of age without a previous influenza vaccination history should receive two doses of the vaccine four weeks apart. Vaccination does not guarantee protection from influenza, however, it decreases the risk significantly. If symptoms arise, viral testing should still occur because vaccination status does not preclude an individual from treatment. Treatment options exist for people testing positive for influenza. Besides supportive measures such as fluid hydration, acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications for fever and body aches, antiviral medications can curb the course of an infection. The antiviral medication a health care provider chooses will depend on the age of the patient and their medical history. These medications may reduce the duration of symptoms, the risk of hospitalization, complications such as ear infections or pneumonia, and death rates in high-risk populations. In addition, antiviral medications have an added benefit of preventing an infection if a close contact tested positive for influenza. Procedures for infection control include respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, face masks, and hand hygiene. Following these initial strategies, along with the influenza vaccine, can reduce the ramifications of the flu. Important News for Active Adults Who’ve Tried Unsuccessfully to Fix Their Knee Pain If you have knee pain and are looking for ways to stay active without resorting to surgery or pain killers, this free event is for you! Just in time for Arizona’s best time of year, hikers, pickleball players, runners, and general outdoor enthusiasts will love this intimate and interactive knee pain event catered to adults who’ve struggled to stay active after developing knee pain but are hesitant to go under the knife. Dr. Tom Padilla, author of “A Runner’s Guide to Avoiding Common Running Injuries” and owner of Scottsdale’s top-rated physical therapist clinic, is hosting a free community event on fixing knee pain at his clinic located at 8350 E Evans Rd Ste C2 in Scottsdale at 5:30 on January 19. Event attendees will learn: • The top 3 causes of knee pain • Tips to start the healing process now • Why surgery and inactivity might not solve the problem • A special knee pain report Those who’ve struggled with knee pain have often tried solutions like stretching, massage, foam rolling, icing, and even ignoring it. Many sufferers have been told by their doctors that refraining from their favorite activities and undergoing surgery are the only options, so once-active adults stop doing the activities that they love. Maybe the exercises and tips Dr. Padilla shares at this hands-on workshop won’t work for you like they have for Dr. Padilla’s hundreds of other clients, but spending an hour of your time on a Wednesday night learning about your options has to be better than putting off living your life another day, week, month… year? And it’s definitely better than settling for surgery or pain killers. The Wednesday-night event will be held at the 5-star clinic at 5:30 on Wednesday, January 19. Laura came to see Dr. Tom Padilla with knee pain, and left with a new, pain-free perspective. “Dr. Tom asked about my medical history and any falls that I’d had. He takes my whole life into consideration instead of just the injury. I love DPT because it has given me a new look on how resilient our bodies are… This experience has been so different. It’s been very functional, and it makes sense to me. It’s helped me like nothing else has,” says Laura. “We’re hosting this event because too many people with knee pain have been told they
have to give up the things they love or have surgery to get back to their lives, and it’s just not true. This workshop is for active adults who want a real, lasting solution that doesn’t require surgery, inactivity, or medicated pain management. Our past attendees who came in saying they’d tried everything have been able to start doing the things they love again without pain, without surgery, and without medication. That’s our mission at my clinic. Those people are the reason we do what we do,” says Dr. Padilla. Due to the interactive nature of the evening, Dr. Padilla caps the event at 10 people in order to give each attendee the attention they need. The intimate event is often filled quickly. Along with a fun and informative night, each attendee gets a free copy of Dr. Padilla’s book “A Runner’s Guide to Avoiding Common Running Injuries” and a “Golden Ticket” that grants them a free one-on-one Discovery Visit with one of their doctors. If your New Year’s resolution was to start living the life you love again, spend an hour on Wednesday night taking the first step to making it happen. To claim your spot and free session with a doctor before they’re gone, call (480) 482-0651 and reserve your seat. Can’t make it? Get a free Knee Pain Report with 5 quick and easy tips you can do today to alleviate knee pain! Email Dr. Tom to request a free copy at info@thedoctorsofpt.com.

Movie Reviews and Upcoming Release Dates By A.D. Beal
IN THEATERS House Of Gucci The story of how Patrizia Reggiani fell in and out of love with—and then murdered—her husband and heir to the Gucci company, Maurizio. Ridley Scott can add comedy to his list of genres he can nail. House Of Gucci is a satire about the rich and how insecure they are, and how easily any taste of greed can corrupt. This is complemented by clever filmmaking choices and the cast. The performances range from chewing as much scenery as possible (Lady Gaga and Jared Leto) and playing it totally straight (Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons), and the contrast works well. It’s also nice to see how Scott gives this film the expensive look it needs, filled with overindulgence. A funny film, even if it feels bloated, but one could argue that fits for the film. BENEDETTA A nun begins a forbidden affair while

receiving visions from who she believes is Jesus. It’s hard to explain something like Benedetta without putting people off. It’s well done, with Paul Verhoeven making the most of the explicit subtext and visuals to support it. The actors convince you of their madness, hypocrisy, and desire, and Verhoeven loves to make you hate them in all their explicit glory. But it’s subject matter is one that will turn off and offend, or even just simply disgust. It’s a movie that one must approach cautiously—it’s not unrated for nothing.
ON NETFLIX The Power of The Dog A man begins a game of psychological war with his brother’s new wife. Silence can be killer, and Jane Campion, in her first movie in 12 years, uses it perfectly. Each third of the film focuses on a different character and how they affect everyone, and slowly but surely, their personalities change and deteriorate. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are the standouts here, both
strangely swapping personalities over the course of the film. The dark tone contrasts well with the lovely but still barren western frontier presented. Jonny Greenwood continues to impress with his tense score. Quite an accomplishment.
almost ruins what could have been a new holiday classic. It’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it to not stick the landing.

Silent Night A family gathers for what may be their final Christmas dinner. Silent Night, for most of its runtime, is great. The dark humor mixed with sincere family drama is a great showcase for firsttime director Camille Griffin. How the various cast members show their emotions, whether subdued or outward, makes these characters real. Griffin’s script also does a great job at hinting at the main plot without telling us for the first twenty minutes. But the film unfortunately falls apart in its last ten minutes, rushing through its conclusion, our characters collapsing suddenly, and a final moment that is incredibly sudden and unearned plays out. Combatting Inflation Threats in Retirement Renee A. Hanson, CFP®, ChFC®, CEP®, CDFA™, CFS®, BFA®, APMA®
T
oday it’s common for Americans to spend two, three or even four decades in retirement. This means people have ample time to relax and achieve a bucket list of dreams. However, the flip side is that retirees need to ensure they have enough savings to last through their lifetime. One complicating factor is that inflation is a fact of life, and it can result in meaningfully higher expenses over time. As you’ve likely seen in recent headlines, inflation rates are the highest they’ve been in many years. Living costs have risen 5% over the past 12 months ending in June, based on the Consumer Price Index 1 – significantly higher than the 1-2% annual increases we’ve gotten used to seeing over the past decade. Inflation creates challenges for all consumers, but it can be particularly difficult for those who are retired and living on a limited income. Higher inflation can throw off the assumptions for regular expenses reflected in your retirement plan. It’s unknown whether this uptick in living costs will persist, but you should prepare for the impacts of inflation regardless. Here are a few things to know and do:
Keep it in perspective Today’s inflation rate of 5% is high by recent standards, but nowhere near a record. We may be a long way from seeing an extended period of high inflation like we had in the 1970s and 1980s, where inflation in the United States peaked at 13.5%. Since 1982, inflation has only been higher than 5% in one calendar year (1991) until now.2 While another decade-long inflation threat is unlikely, living costs in the near-term may continue to rise at a fast pace.
gas? Are there other discretionary expenses you can forego, at least for now? Addressing these questions today could prevent you from spending down your assets too quickly. Adjust your investments Is your portfolio properly positioned to keep pace with inflation? It may make sense to keep a portion of your assets invested in stocks. Over the past 30 years, the Standard & Poor’s 500, a benchmark of U.S. large cap stock market performance, gained, on average, more than 10% annually3, well above the 2.3% average annual inflation rate over that same period.4 Earning higher returns on money you may need 10 to 20 years in the future should help it grow sufficiently to meet inflated income needs at that time, but a large portion of your portfolio should still be invested more conservatively to protect it from market volatility. Look at other options to improve your position If you are experiencing financial strains as living costs rise, you may want to consider other options, such as a part-time job or consulting. Even in retirement, it is important to be flexible to react to changing circumstances that may affect even your best-laid plans. Be sure to check with your financial advisor to discuss your most attractive options to manage today’s inflation risks. 1 Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Consumer Price Index Summary,” July 13, 2021. 2 Source: Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, “Consumer Price Index, 1913-,” 3 Based on total return data from Standard & Poor’s. 4 Based on the Consumer Price Index, Bureau of Labor Statistics, June 1991 through June 2021.
